The best cruises to Alaska from Seattle for every type of traveler

Gene Sloan

What are the best Alaska cruises out of Seattle ? It depends on what kind of traveler you are.

If you're a parent traveling with teens and tweens, you'll probably want to pick a voyage on one of the big, family activity-filled cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line that sail out of Seattle each summer.

If you're looking to get away from families with young children — maybe you're a retiree looking to travel with people your own age — you'd want to check out the itineraries operated by cruise lines that cater more to couples without kids, most notably Holland America and Princess Cruises.

Other cruises might be best for solo travelers or travelers on a tight budget.

Here we list our top picks for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for six different types of travelers.

Best for families: Ovation of the Seas

cruise for alaska from seattle

It isn't easy picking the best Alaska cruise out of Seattle for families. There are four world-class family-focused cruise ships in the market, each of which is a contender for the best for families title: Royal Caribbean 's Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas, and Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.

All four ships are loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz family attractions, from bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators on the Royal Caribbean vessels to go-kart tracks and laser tag courses on the Norwegian ships.

Unlike the Royal Caribbean ships, the Norwegian ships also have epic waterslides on their top decks, which in theory, might put them over the top in any listing of the best cruise ships for families based in Seattle.

However, keep in mind that Alaska can be chilly, even at the height of summer, and rainy, too. For that reason, we discount the value of some of the family-friendly attractions on the Norwegian ships, which are open to the elements, and consider the Royal Caribbean ships the best of the bunch for Alaska cruises from Seattle.

Both of the Royal Caribbean ships sailing to Alaska from Seattle are loaded with attractions that are protected from the elements, including those bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators. In fact, both Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas were specifically built to operate in areas of inclement weather.

Of the two ships, which are nearly identical and part of the relatively new Quantum class of vessels, we give the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas the nod for best Alaska family cruise ship sailing from Seattle only because it's a couple of years newer. Newer is almost always better in the cruise world.

Related: The 6 types of Royal Caribbean ships, explained

A cavernous indoor activity area on each of the two Quantum-class ships called the SeaPlex is home to the aforementioned bumper cars, as well as such family-friendly activities as roller skating, basketball and even trapeze lessons. The two-level complex also has upstairs nooks for playing Xbox, ping pong and foosball. It's like one big play zone for families that will keep your kids busy for hours.

Each of the ships also offers one of the most unusual attractions you'll find at sea: A glass-enclosed capsule mounted on a mechanical arm that will take you and your family soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. It's called the North Star ride.

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows, plus lots of eateries and bars.

Of particular note, given Alaska's weather, is that one of the two main pool areas on each of these Quantum-class ships is enclosed.

Best for budget travelers: Eurodam

cruise for alaska from seattle

Our pick for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for budget travelers may come as a surprise to many cruise aficionados. That's because it's not the Alaska voyages from Seattle offered by the North American cruise line best known for budget sailings — Carnival Cruise Line .

Carnival does offer cruises to Alaska from Seattle regularly with two ships: Carnival Spirit and Carnival Luminosa. However, while Carnival is the low-cost leader in many cruise destinations, that's not always the case in the market for Alaska cruises from Seattle. Often, the lowest starting prices you'll find on cruises to Alaska from Seattle, on both an absolute and per-day basis, are the cruises offered by Holland America .

For the coming year, for instance, as of this guide's posting, there were lots of Holland America sailings to Alaska from Seattle available for under $750 per person for seven nights — some as low as $429 per person for seven nights.

There were very few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights.

We suspect the lower starting prices for Holland America ships as compared to Carnival ships on Alaska sailings out of Seattle is because Alaska cruises from Seattle are round-trip voyages. Many Holland America fans who cruise to Alaska choose a one-way voyage to or from the state that lets them add extra days for touring in Alaska at the start or end of the voyage. Such one-way voyages only are available out of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Holland America — the longtime leader in Alaska cruises, along with its sister company Princess Cruises — is particularly known for "cruisetours" to Alaska that combine a one-way cruise to or from the state with multiple days touring Alaska by motorcoach and train.

Holland America bases two ships in Seattle for cruises to Alaska: the 2,104-passenger Eurodam and 1,964-passenger Westerdam. Starting prices for both are relatively similar, but we give the nod for the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for budget travelers to Eurodam as it's a somewhat newer vessel.

Best for luxury lovers: Norwegian Encore

cruise for alaska from seattle

No luxury-focused cruise ships sail to Alaska out of Seattle. Still, you can get a variation on a luxury cruise experience on a voyage to Alaska from Seattle on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Norwegian Encore.

Yes, the 3,998-passenger Norwegian Encore is a cruise ship that generally caters to the masses, not the luxury crowd. However, it has its own "ship-within-a-ship" luxury zone that offers a much more swanky experience for those willing to pay.

At the top front of the vessel, this private enclave, called The Haven, is home to dozens of upscale suites; a sprawling, two-deck-high pool area; a private lounge and bar; and a private restaurant. Only the deep-pocketed swells who can afford one of the suites get exclusive access to these areas.

The pool area, a true stunner, comes with comfortable padded loungers, a pool and whirlpools. Its retractable glass roof is perfect for cruises to Alaska when the weather is iffy. Guests can enjoy the deck, rain or shine.

If living large is your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this — other than with a cruise on a similar Norwegian vessel that also cruises to Alaska from Seattle. Norwegian Bliss, also based in Washington during the summer, is part of the same Norwegian Breakaway-Plus class of vessels and has a similar Haven enclave.

Related: How to turn a mass-market cruise into a luxury experience

Why did we pick Norwegian Encore over Norwegian Bliss as the ship offering the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for luxury lovers? Built a year after Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore offers one big improvement for the upscale crowd as compared to Norwegian Bliss.

On Norwegian Encore, there's a much bigger version of the exclusive, extra-charge Vibe Beach Club sunning area that's on Norwegian Bliss. Home to a full-service bar, cabanas and two hot tubs, the version of the Vibe Beach Club on Norwegian Encore sprawls across both sides of the ship (instead of just one side on Norwegian Bliss) and extends upward to a partial deck above. It's just $99 or more per day to get in.

It's yet one more stylish and upscale area for cruisers looking for an upgraded experience to retreat.

Note that there is one other option for upscale Alaska cruises out of Seattle: A voyage on Oceania Cruises ' 684-passenger Regatta. While Oceania isn't considered a luxury line on the level of Silversea Cruises or Seabourn Cruise Line , it has an elegant feel. That said, given the ship's age (it dates to 1998) and limited venues, we're still in the camp that favors a Haven stay on a Norwegian ship.

Best for solo travelers: Norwegian Bliss

cruise for alaska from seattle

Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss are also our top picks for ships operating the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for solo travelers. Between these two, it's a tossup, though we put Norwegian Bliss in the headline above since, well, we already gave Norwegian Encore a turn in the limelight with the best-for-luxury category.

Notably, both Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore boast large private zones for solo travelers — something you won't find on any other cruise ship sailing out of Seattle. It's a hallmark of Norwegian's newest and biggest ships.

On each of the ships, the "studio" zones, as Norwegian calls them, are made up of 82 special solo cabins and a private Studio Lounge where solos can gather for happy hours and other events. Only the studio zone on Norwegian's 2010-built Norwegian Epic is bigger.

Passengers staying in solo cabins get exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (using their keycards), meaning a maximum of 82 people will share the space.

A special zone for solo travelers is a rare concept in the cruise world, where almost all rooms for vacationers are designed for two people and sold with per-person fares that are based on two people occupying the room.

The solo cabins in the studio zones are small (measuring 100 square feet) but are superbly designed to maximize storage space (something I learned firsthand staying in one on Norwegian Epic).

Related: The best cruise lines for solo travelers

Solo passengers on Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss will also find a sometimes rollicking bar scene, with plenty of counter-style seating in bars that are a great place to meet other solo travelers and friendly guests. We recommend the Sugarcane Mojito Bar on Norwegian Bliss. There, the bartender will muddle your mojitos with raspberry, guava, passion fruit or even jalapeno pepper to spice things up when you're sitting with your new solo friends.

One warning if you're considering booking one of the solo cabins: They've become so popular that they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Best for multigenerational travel: Discovery Princess

cruise for alaska from seattle

Looking for the best Alaska cruise from Seattle if you're bringing three generations of your family along for the ride? We can think of nothing better than a voyage on one of the two Princess Cruises ships that sail out of the city, the 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess and 3,560-passenger Royal Princess.

Both ships are almost identical, but we give Discovery Princess the edge only because it's newer than Royal Princess. The two vessels were built in 2022 and 2013, respectively.

Princess has long been heralded as one of the best cruise lines for multigenerational travel, in part because its ships offer a little something for travelers of all ages.

Unlike the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships mentioned above, the two Princess ships sailing from Seattle don't have top decks heavily skewed to family fun. Instead, their top decks offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without much hustle and bustle.

That makes these ships more appealing to an older demographic that doesn't necessarily want to be on a vessel that's loaded to the gills with children's fun zones and the younger family travelers drawn to that. Notably, the average age of Princess passengers is around 57, and you'll usually see many couples on board in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Still, unlike some lines that cater to an older crowd, Princess doesn't ignore the children's market. Both Discovery Princess and Royal Princess offer an extensive children's program that gets high marks from parents, with dedicated Discovery Channel-themed Camp Discovery areas where counselors supervise free activities daily for children ages 3 to 17.

When sailing to Alaska, these ships also offer other kid-friendly events, such as Puppies on Princess, when dog mushers and their newest sled dogs come on board for meet-and-greets (and photos!). In partnership with the Discovery Channel and Glacier Bay National Park, the line also adds such kid-friendly fun during Alaska sailings as a Junior Ranger Program, totem pole decorating and a "Deadliest Catch-"themed crab sorting challenge.

In addition, an onboard Klondike Festival brings added family entertainment, including gold nugget arts and crafts projects, a naturalist exhibition, harmonica music classes and North to Alaska dance performances.

In short, Princess provides an Alaska product specifically designed to appeal to a wide age range. It's the line you take if you want an affordable ship that'll appeal to your 70-year-old parents as much as your 12-year-old kid.

Best for retirees: Westerdam

cruise for alaska from seattle

The best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for retirees, in our view, are the sailings offered by Holland America on both the 1,964-passenger Westerdam and 2,104-passenger Eurodam. We give Westerdam the slight edge for reasons we will explain below.

While Holland America draws some families with younger children, the passengers on its ships skew heavily toward middle-aged and older travelers, including many retirees. If you're nearing or already have hit retirement age and prefer to travel mostly with people who are at a similar stage in life as you, you'll feel right at home on a Holland America ship.

The top decks of Holland America vessels, notably, lack many of the kid-focused attractions found on the top decks of more family-focused ships operated by the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. That often keeps families with younger kids from booking the ships.

What you will find on the top decks of both Eurodam and Westerdam are more serene sunning areas with pools and whirlpools. Depending on your travel style, that might be all you need.

Related: The best cruises for seniors who love to travel

Both Eurodam and Westerdam mostly sail seven-night trips to Alaska out of Seattle. However, for 2024, Westerdam has added an epic new 28-night Alaska itinerary out of Seattle that will include calls in remote areas that most cruise ships never visit. The new itinerary is one reason we give Westerdam the edge among ships when rating the best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for seniors.

It's the sort of itinerary that specifically appeals to retirees with the time (and money) to book such a long trip.

Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd. To the extent that families with younger kids book Holland America ships, they are more likely to book one of its larger vessels.

In addition to Eurodam and Rotterdam, two other good choices for retirees considering Alaska cruises out of Seattle are the two Princess ships that sail on such itineraries: Royal Princess and Discovery Princess. Like the Holland America ships, they aren't loaded with kid-focused attractions that draw families.

Bottom line

Nearly a dozen major cruise ships operate Alaska cruises out of Seattle during the summer months, giving cruisers plenty of choice.

What is the best Alaska cruise from Seattle for you? That'll depend on your personal interests and travel style because there are cruises from Seattle that appeal to everyone, including family travelers, budget travelers and retirees.

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

Whether you're in it for the sightseeing, wildlife spotting or relaxing among glaciers, there's an Alaska cruise for you

Lauren Dana

Alaska is among the most popular summer vacation destinations since it’s (pretty much) the only time of year the state offers warm, sunny weather and hours of extra daylight (on my summer 2022 trip here, I remember looking at my iPhone and being surprised that the sun still hadn’t set by 9pm!). In my opinion, cruising is, by far, the best way to experience the massive state and all the beauty it has to offer since you won’t need to drive or hop on a handful of flights; plus, you’ll only need to unpack once! (The views, of course, are just the icing on the proverbial cake.)

As you scroll through our top picks for the best Alaska cruises, it’s worth noting that most options include scenic cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage, a 500-mile-long coastal route world-renowned for its wildlife, glaciers and postcard-worthy scenery. (I’ll never forget the awe I felt when watching a whale breach from the 11th deck of my cruise ship or the glacier-studded views I ogled from the comfort of my private balcony.)

Below, I’ve broken down the best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler, including budget-conscious cruisers, adventure-seekers and luxury lovers alike.

Best Alaska cruises

Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

1.  Holland America Line’s Alaskan Explorer

Best overall experience.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates: May through September 2024

I was fortunate enough to cruise Alaska with Holland America back in August 2022 aboard the line’s uber-popular, aptly named Alaskan Explorer itinerary. Cruising roundtrip from Seattle, the seven-day journey features scenic cruising through Stephens Passage before arriving in Juneau, where my sister and I embarked on my favorite shore excursion of the trip: A dog sledding adventure! The following day, we cruised through Glacier Bay before arriving at Icy Strait Point for a few hours, which we spent whale-watching—to this day, it is one of my most cherished travel memories. Afterward, we headed to Sitka, where we went rafting and spotted wildlife like puffins and adorable sea otters before wrapping up the adventure in the final two ports of call, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

The onboard offerings were equally impressive, with nightly live music and some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten (Holland America is the first cruise line to serve 100 percent fresh and certified sustainable Alaska seafood on board). Just this year, the line unveiled its Glacier Guarantee : Guests are guaranteed to visit a glacier during their sailing; otherwise, they’re entitled to a Future Cruise Credit equal to 15 percent of their cruise fare.

Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

2.  Celebrity Cruises’ Alaska Dawes Glacier

Best upscale option.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip)

Sailing dates: May through August 2024

Celebrity Cruises offers an upscale onboard experience with plenty of chic hangout spaces, stylish restaurants and contemporary staterooms. For the first time, the spectacular 2019-era Celebrity Edge—known for its 29 restaurants bars and lounges plus innovative spaces like the Magic Carpet , which the line has deemed “the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 stories above sea level”—will homeport in Seattle. She’ll cruise to Alaska via the seven-night Alaska Dawes Glacier itinerary, including scenic sailing through Endicott Arms and the Inside Passage. As you can likely tell by its name, guests aboard this itinerary will cruise alongside the striking Dawes Glacier, which stands over 600 feet tall and can be further inspected via a thrilling shore excursion. Ports of call include Juneau, Skagway and Victoria (British Columbia).

Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

3.  Crystal’s Vancouver to Vancouver

Best luxury cruise.

Cruises from: Vancouver (roundtrip) Sailing dates: July 2024

For a truly memorable Alaska sailing, splurge on Crystal’s seven-night Vancouver to Vancouver itinerary—and thank me later. As you can guess by its name, the 740-passenger Crystal Serenity will sail roundtrip from Vancouver, cruising through Canada’s glacier-studded Seymour Narrows before calling on Sitka and Skagway, respectively. Afterward, you’ll enjoy scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm fjord before one last port stop in Ketchikan. While in port, cruisers can embark on bucket-list-worthy excursions such as wildlife spotting tours, kayaking adventures and fishing. The on-board programming is equally impressive: All passengers, regardless of their room category, enjoy private butler service; Wi-Fi; a selection of wines, champagne, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages like water, soft drinks and specialty coffees; free gratuities; and one complimentary reservation to each of the two specialty dining restaurants, including the first and only Nobu at sea (yes, that Nobu).

Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

4.  Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic’s Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

Best for wildlife spotting.

Cruises from: Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer a handful of one-of-a-kind Alaska sailings specially suited for true adventure-seekers. The Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness itinerary, which sails from Juneau to Sitka and vice-versa (depending on your desired sail date), invites cruisers to experience Alaska’s natural landscapes and wildlife up close and personal with guidance and unique insight from an onboard expedition team . Along the way, partake in adventures like hiking through forests, cruising around icebergs via Zodiac, or searching for puffins and mountain goats in Glacier Bay National Park. Little ones can also partake in the fun: Children and teens can learn more about Alaska’s landscapes and wildlife with the National Geographic Global Explorers family program. Cruisers will sail on one of two 100-person vessels, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, both offer a shallow draft that, per the website, allows the ships’ captains to “navigate the inner reaches and provide more intimate experiences.”

Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

5.  Alaskan Dream Cruises’ 2024 Ice of the Inside Passage

Best small-ship option.

Cruises from: Sitka to Ketchikan

Sailing dates: May through August 2024 This brand-new itinerary from Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dreams Cruises is ideal for cruisers craving an authentic small-ship experience. The eight-day voyage departs from Sitka aboard the 49-passenger Baranof Dream. From there, you'll enjoy scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. It’s also worth noting that, because of the ship’s small size, guests can gain an up-close view of seven different glaciers, including Margerie, Grand Pacific, Mendenhall, Sawyer, South Sawyer and Dawes glaciers, plus a high-speed jet-boat excursion to LeConte Glacier.

After cruising Glacier Bay National Park, it’s off to Juneau, followed by more scenic sailing through the Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm fjords (the latter can be explored via kayak or skiff expedition). This itinerary is also unique since it includes a Kasaan stop where guests can immerse themselves in Alaska's native culture by visiting the Haida community. The final port of call, Ketchikan, is known as “The Salmon Capital of the World.”

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

6.  Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Flavors of Alaska

Cruises from: Vancouver to Seward

Sailing dates: June 2024

Cruise the Last Frontier in style with Regent Seven Seas aboard the Seven Seas Explorer, which offers all-suite accommodations equipped with private balconies for soaking in the glacial views. While there are several Alaska itineraries to choose from, Flavors of Alaska , which sails from Vancouver to Seward, is among our favorites since it includes (pretty much) all of Alaska’s most popular ports of call, including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, with Hubbard Glacier scenic cruising. As such, it’s an excellent choice for first-time visitors to Alaska. It’s also worth noting that this particular voyage offers up to 50 free excursions, including rainforest and glacier hikes, whale-watching adventures, kayaking and fishing. While this luxury cruise line isn’t cheap, it offers excellent value with numerous amenities already included in the price, such as specialty dining, transfers between the airport and ship, an open bar package, roundtrip air on domestic flights, gratuities and two-for-one fares.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

7.  Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Best for families.

Cruises from: Seattle (roundtrip) Sailing dates:  May through September 2024

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for its casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere—for example, there are no set dining times—and breadth of activities and amenities. As such, it’s safe to say this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages. This summer, gather the family for an epic Alaska sailing aboard the aptly named Norwegian Bliss, which offers thrilling activities like go-kart racing and laser tag. The itinerary is equally impressive as the vessel itself: After setting sail from Seattle, it’s off to scenic Sitka. The following day, you’ll explore Juneau before scenic cruising through Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. Passengers will then visit Icy Strait Point (home to the state’s largest native Tlingit village, as well as awe-inspiring wildlife, including orcas and humpback whales, which, if you’re lucky, can be spotted straight from the ship). The final Alaskan port of call, Ketchikan, is renowned for its colorful Creek Street, a former red light district turned tourist attraction, where you can also spot salmon swimming upstream (and even the occasional otter or two). Before heading back to Seattle, you’ll visit Victoria, British Columbia, which just so happens to be one of my favorite ports of call thanks to its charming shops and restaurants coupled with its bustling food scene (fun fact: It’s home to the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada).

Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

8.  Viking Cruises’ Alaska & The Inside Passage

Best adults-only.

Sailing dates: May through September 2024

Viking is renowned for its adults-only, all-inclusive cruises (think free spa access; Wi-Fi; one shore excursion per port; wine and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner; all-balcony accommodations). Cruisers aboard the line’s 11-day Alaska & The Inside Passage itinerary—where nobody is below the age of 18—enjoy visits to popular ports of call like Juneau, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Skagway and Ketchikan, along with a stop in Valdez, a small fishing town known for its glaciers, waterfalls and scenic hiking trails, before disembarking in Seward, aka the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. The line is also known for its immersive shore excursions, including a visit to Saxman Native Village and animal encounters at the Alaska Sealife Center.

Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

9.  Royal Caribbean’s Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

Best budget option.

Cruises from: Seward to Vancouver

Royal Caribbean is known for its laid-back ambiance and bucket-list sailings aboard its mega-ship fleet, which offer something for everyone, be it water slides, skydiving simulators or escape rooms. With fares ranging from $299 to $625 depending on the date, the seven-night Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier aboard Radiance of the Seas—which offers completely complimentary activities like a rock climbing wall and Broadway-caliber entertainment, not to mention 11 dining options and several bars and lounges—is a great way to experience The Last Frontier without breaking the bank. After embarking in Seward, passengers will enjoy scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier, followed by port stops in Juneau, Skagway, Haines (famous for its majestic wildlife, including bears and eagles), Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. Before disembarking in Vancouver, travelers are in for one final treat: Scenic cruising through the Inside Passage.

Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

10.  Princess Cruises’ Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park)

Best for foodies.

Culinary connoisseurs can sail to Alaska aboard Discovery Princess, which is among the newest Princess ships to cruise Alaska this season, and the Seven-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park) is one for the books since it calls on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria (British Columbia), along with scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Also, as part of the line’s “North to Alaska” programming, passengers can partake in unique culinary experiences, including Cook My Catch at the new specialty seafood restaurant, The Cach by Rudi. This unique offering allows cruisers to consume their very own fresh catch caught on a fishing excursion. Foodies can also partake in an onboard salmon cooking demonstration led by expert chefs, along with a four-course seafood feast at the Crab Shack, a lunch pop-up found in the World Fresh Marketplace.

The Best Time To Go On An Alaskan Cruise, Depending On What You Want Most From The Trip

Person welcomes cruise ship to Alaska

Wondering when to book your Alaskan cruise? A trip to the northernmost state is delightful at any time of year, but deciding on what you most want out of the vacation can help determine when the best time to book your sailing will be. To start, the seasonal nature of cruises will help you out: The bulk of cruises to Alaska operate from May to September from the West Coast ports of Seattle and Vancouver. So while there are fantastic Alaskan cruises to choose , maybe don't count on ringing in the New Year on one.

As a travel writer, one of my most treasured trips is the Inner Passage cruise to Alaska I took with my kids on the Discovery Princess. Much of what we enjoyed onboard, including the ritzy dining experiences, getting bundled up to watch outdoor movies under a vast canopy of stars, and snapping roughly one billion pictures from our balcony, would be part of the experience no matter when we traveled. On the other hand, some of the most delightful aspects of the trip, like the temperate weather, the drama of calving glaciers and resulting baby icebergs, and the spawning salmon we watched launch themselves upstream, were down to the fact that we traveled as July turned to August.

Wildlife Spotting

One of the top draws of an Alaskan cruise is the opportunity for wildlife spotting, which hits its stride in the late spring and continues through the summer, before the animals tuck in to hibernate or head south for the winter. Bears, caribou, and eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes in the wildlands of Alaska, with seals, porpoises, and several species of whales splashing offshore. While orcas spend the year in Alaska, grey and humpback whales winter in warmer climates, returning north in the spring (late April/early May, according to the Travel Alaska site.)

During our summer adventure, we spotted countless bald and golden eagles swooping through the sky and perched on tree branches and telephone poles. On a whale watching expedition, we were treated to views of the giant creatures breeching the surface and diving back into the depths while sea lions sunned themselves on the shore. Near the Mendenhall Glacier, we even spotted a bear. Wildlife safaris, nature walks, and whale-watching tours are often options for excursions. Make sure to book well in advance if creature-spotting is high on the list for your trip.

Battling fewer crowds

Traveling when school is in session in the spring and fall is your best bet for avoiding crowds, particularly if you are sailing with a family-focused cruise line. Many people don't have a lot of flexibility on when they can travel, so if you do, take advantage! Cruise companies work hard to have ships sail at full capacity for every sailing, so the amount of people onboard might not be noticeably different no matter when you go. When you go ashore, however, the sparse shoulder season crowds will be a bonus. Fewer ships sail on fewer itineraries outside of peak season, so you won't have as many people to contend with. People dream of being alone in the wilds of Alaska . Part of the allure is the wide-open, untamed space ... seeing it without several hundred other people, give or take, seems like a good idea.

Of course, there are drawbacks to traveling to Alaska in the shoulder season. Tripadvisor user Maple_Marshmallows calls the end of April "the worst time to visit," citing spring break. It's also important to remember that some of the seasonal attractions and businesses might not be open if you travel too early or late during the cruise season.

Basking in warmer weather

Alaska is warmest in July. However, if you are booking your trip with visions of endless hours of sun-baked fun poolside, you may need to do some revision to your fantasy. Particularly along the popular Inside Passage cruise route, Alaska has a temperate climate that doesn't feel very different from the Pacific Northwest. In the region of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, and Ketchikan, July averages a high of 64 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 48, with 17 rainy days, according to Alaska.org . August is similar, only a few degrees cooler.

If you are doing an inland excursion or tour into places like Denali National Park, Anchorage, Seward, or Fairbanks, know that things aren't radically different, though it is slightly warmer. This region, known as the Interior or Southcentral area, averages July temperature highs of 65 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of 51.

A wardrobe that would feel comfortable for Oregon weather won't be very out of place for a summer sailing in Alaska. That said, in the height of summer, you may get some unexpectedly warm days, so make sure you leave a bit of room in your suitcase for shorts and a tank top!

Getting dazzled by the Northern Lights

The aurora borealis are more active and easier to spot during long winter nights. Travel Alaska pegs the season as August 21-April 21, so if you want a better chance to see the sweeping light show during the summer, booking your trip for as late in the sailing season as possible is your best bet.

The dancing greens and blues (and purple and red if you are really lucky) are caused by solar wind interacting with the Earth's magnetic field. Space.com explains: "As Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles ... the dramatic process transforms into a cinematic atmospheric phenomenon that dazzles and fascinates scientists and skywatchers alike."

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights . The bad news is that in the rainforest atmosphere of the Inside Passage, where most cruises go, it tends to be cloudy and rainy during the months when the aurora is most active. That doesn't mean they are impossible to spot, but if you have an itinerary that takes you farther north, or are part of a land tour that takes you farther inland, your chances of catching a glimpse of the dazzling phenomenon increase substantially.

Keeping more money in your wallet

A trip to Alaska isn't a cheap prospect. Most visitors to the state come for the experience rather than to save money on a bargain vacation. That said, you can save quite a bit by choosing your trip dates wisely. According to Cruise Critic , the lowest average prices are in September and October, followed by prices in May. It goes to reason that the end of season months are cheaper: The weather is starting to turn, kids are back in school, and demand is less. You might be surprised that April is more expensive than May, despite the fact May is arguably a better month to travel to Alaska. Cruise Critic gives the reason for this seemingly illogical quirk — not surprisingly, it's economics. April is a transitory month in the cruise industry, with ships repositioning from their winter ports in the south to their summer ports. Not as many cruise lines run Alaska cruises in April as they do in May, meaning there are fewer cabins available, which keeps prices higher than you might expect.

Celebrity Cruises’ first-ever Edge series Alaska itineraries set sail

Post date: May 22 2024

Date: May 22 2024

By: Travelweek

MIAMI — For the first time ever, Celebrity Edge, the ship that introduced the revolutionary outward-facing design, is calling Alaska home for the summer.

Celebrity Edge recently embarked on its maiden sailing roundtrip from Seattle on a seven-night Dawes Glacier itinerary with stops in Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

cruise for alaska from seattle

Through its unique outward facing design, Celebrity Edge offers guests an unmatched immersive experience as they take in the Alaskan glaciers.

“There’s no better way to see the pristine Alaskan wilderness than onboard Celebrity Edge, which was specifically designed to create a closer connection between guests and destinations,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises. “Our elevated vacation options are redefining travel, especially in this region.”

From May through September 2024, guests can indulge in Alaska’s unforgettable views from the comfort of an Edge Series ship. The iconic Magic Carpet – the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform, at sea – sits on the edge of the ship, creating a new way to dine, drink and connect with the destination, or watch for whales and eagles as you wake up in one of the Infinite Veranda staterooms as the boundaries between inside and outside are erased.

Celebrity Edge will sail roundtrip from Seattle and one-way between Vancouver to Seattle on six-and seven-night journeys. Itineraries include visits to the region’s top spots, with experiences in Ketchikan also known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World,’ the Endicott Arm to spot the local wildlife including brown bears, bald eagles, sea ducks, deer, moose and wolves, Alaska’s capital Juneau and Skagway before heading to Victoria through the Inside Passage and then returning to Seattle.

Some of the features guests of Celebrity Edge can indulge in include …

  • Transformational accommodations, from modern two-story Edge Villas with plunge pools to staterooms with Infinite Verandas. Blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living, the Infinite Veranda takes you right to the water’s edge, giving guests open air access to the sea with the touch of a button.
  • The Retreat, exclusive to all suite guests, with its private restaurant, and exclusive lounge and sundeck. In addition, a dedicated team of butlers, attendants, and concierges on-hand 24/7, ensures everything is taken care of while on vacation.
  • A culinary repertoire of 29 distinct restaurants, bars, and lounges connecting guests to the destinations they will visit like never before. Globally inspired menus crafted by a Michelin-star chef bring the flavours of the world straight to the plate.
  • Unique spaces unlike anything else at sea, including The Magic Carpet and Eden, offering three levels of sensory experiences wrapped in glass. Both offer a mix of culinary and entertainment options with panoramic views
  • Multi-use, transformative spaces to gather, such as The Grand Plaza offering a majestic, open, three-storey venue inspired by the piazzas of Italy and housing incredible specialty restaurants, the popular Martini Bar, Cafe al Bacio, and the new Grand Plaza Cafe.

Celebrity’s ships, Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Solstice, will offer 57 sailings and an array of six-to seven-night itineraries from May to September 2024.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Celebrity Cruises, as part of Royal Caribbean Group, engages port communities across Alaska through its Sea the Future commitment to sustain the planet, energize communities and accelerate innovation while delivering the best vacations responsibly.

Key initiatives include …

  • Grand Opening – Ketchikan Salmon Walk: In partnership with the Tongass Historical Museum, the Ketchikan Salmon Walk recently opened this summer, offering vacationers a unique opportunity to delve into the tale of the salmon migration and life cycle in Ketchikan Creek. The nearly two-mile walk is equipped with upgraded lighting and pavement, as well as engaging placards with art by renowned artists like Ray Troll, Nathan Jackson and Marvin Oliver.
  • A taste of Alaska through local sourcing: Committed to fostering relationships with Alaska businesses, guests are offered access to a variety of Alaska-owned products, retailers, excursions, and experiences. Established partnerships with Skagway Spirits, Seafood Producers Cooperative and Alaska Specialty Seafood, sourcing fresh seafood and other local items across its brands. These local partnerships highlight the group’s dedication to connecting with local cultures and supporting economic vibrancy while creating an authentic Alaska experience for guests.
  • Renewed Commitment – Sitka Sound Science Center: The Sitka Sound Science Center’s Scientists in the Schools (SIS) program enables local scientists to partner with students in K-12 classrooms to explore science and ecosystems. This initiative aims to foster a passion and appreciation for science and nature among Sitka’s youth while creating a meaningful educational experience. The program incorporates classroom visits from scientists into the curriculum at each grade level in Sitka schools, creating a pipeline of scientific experiences during the entire academic career of Sitka’s K-12 students. The program benefited 960 students from nine schools last year with the support of the cruise company.
  • ‘Locals Onboard’ – Voyij.com Partnership: Over the past three cruising seasons, the partnership with Skagway-based Voyij.com has driven more than $1 million in sales to local businesses in Alaska. The two teamed up in 2021 to help connect ship guests to the online marketplace where Alaska businesses, retailers and artists sell their crafts. More than 250 small businesses and artists across more than 45 communities from all regions of the state are listed on Voyij.com.

A Light Packers Guide to Alaska – (What I Brought – and 17 “Essentials” I Didn’t Bring) + Printable Checklist

If you are considering an Alaska cruise you may be wondering what you need to pack.

Unpredictable weather can make packing for an Alaskan cruise a little harder than some other destinations – but I have successfully managed it and will list everything that I packed (and didn’t pack) in this article.

My first cruise was to Alaska way back in 2005, and I took a second cruise to Alaska in 2024. Both cruises were with Norwegian Cruise Line .

cruise for alaska from seattle

My first Alaska cruise gave me a lifelong love of cruising. Above is a photo of me during my first-ever Alaskan Cruise. I was eleven, and we took this cruise in August 2005.

We will talk about the clothing I packed for my 2024 Alaskan cruise in this article.

Alaskan Cruise – Packing List: Clothes

For a 7-night Alaska cruise, I would recommend packing the following quantity of each item:

#1 Pack More Underwear Than You Think You’ll Need!

I’d always recommend packing at least 7 sets of underwear/socks for a 7 night cruise and would suggest that you pack more than this. I took 12 sets.

You might go swimming mid-way through the day and want to change or you might go on an excursion and get wet feet.

It’s always better to pack more underwear than you think you’ll need! If you do run out though, you can use the travel wash that we mentioned earlier.

Underwear is very easy to wash using a travel wash and can be hung in the bathroom to dry.

Dr. Beckmann Travel Wash, 100 ml

#2 Simple T-Shirts and Tops Are Key!

7 T-shirts or tops of some kind should be more than enough. That said, you will probably want to get changed for dinner and may want to include some more formal shirts or blouses.

If you are planning on doing any exercise classes onboard you may also need a couple of workout-appropriate tops.

cruise for alaska from seattle

#3 Bring Evening Wear if You’d Like to Change

Depending on the cruise line you may have formal nights.

Norwegian aren’t a formal cruise, and don’t have “formal nights.” They have “Dress up or not” nights with a “suggested” dress code.

If you do want to “dress up” on Norwegian men can just wear a shirt and trousers and women wear either a dress or a top/trousers combination.

I usually pack 5 dresses for a 7-night cruise but remember shoes/cardigans/shrugs can be re-worn!

It isn’t against the rules to wear the same thing for multiple formal nights either, you’ll likely only be wearing it for a few hours and if you don’t spill anything down your front you are good to go!

Find out more about dress codes when cruising with Norwegian here:

Norwegian Cruise Line Don’t Have Formal Nights – Here’s What They Have Instead

#4 You’ll Need Pants/Trousers/Jeans as The Weather is Unpredictable

The weather in Alaska can be unpredictable.

I was very lucky when I first cruised in Alaska as a child, we went in August and we had sunshine most days.

That said, even if it’s sunny in the morning it can be pouring with rain in the afternoon so it’s important you have enough trousers/jeans to wear every day if needs be.

For a 7-night cruise, I would pack around 3 pairs of pants/trousers/jeans.

cruise for alaska from seattle

#5 Do NOT Cruise to Alaska Without Multiple Sweaters/Jumpers/Hoodies

This is possibly the most important thing that you will pack for an Alaska cruise – and I would recommend that you pack more layers than you usually would.

For a 7-night cruise, I would recommend packing 3 hoodies/jumpers/cardigans/pullovers of some kind.

When I went to Alaska as a child, my Mum left her jumper in the car and didn’t have anything warm to wear! Luckily my Gran had a jumper with her that she had just knitted for my American uncle – so Mum had to wear that! Learn from my Mum’s mistake…

Alaska Cruise 2005

The southern and coastal regions of Alaska can also be cloudy with some rain showers throughout the year, with average summer temperatures ranging from 40°F to 60°F (4° – 15°C).  Alaska Tours

It is important to note that evening temperatures in Alaska can be cool in the summer. It is wise to bring cardigans, jumpers, or sweaters if you are out and about in the evenings.

cruise for alaska from seattle

I’d always recommend bringing a small jumper/coat with you in your bag in case it does get cold/rainy.

When I went to Alaska in May 2024 the temperature was around 15°C/60°F – so a little chilly, and I often found myself putting on my “Pac a Mac ” as an extra layer to keep warm.

#6 Bring Comfortable Shoes (and Maybe Formal Shoes Too)

For an Alaskan cruise, I would recommend that you first pack a pair of shoes which you are comfortable walking in – such as sneakers/trainers or walking shoes.

You will probably be walking quite a lot around the different ports, it’s important that you have a good grip and feel comfortable walking in the shoes.

I’d also recommend that you bring some waterproof walking shoes or boots. When it rains, it can rain a LOT, and having wet feet is not ideal.

I’ve been on cruises before where it has taken multiple days for my shoes to dry after a rainstorm.

For ladies, I would recommend that you pack a couple of pairs of heels/flats/sandals to wear onboard in the evenings. Gentlemen could just pack a smart pair of shoes to go with trousers.

It’s usually relatively warm inside the cruise ship and you don’t have to worry about your feet getting wet!

Don’t be afraid to re-wear the same shoes, by sticking to neutral tones you can avoid having to change your shoes to go with each outfit.

On this trip I took a pair of white trainers to wear on the ship, waterproof walking boots for excursions and a pair of sandals for evening wear – so three pairs in all.

#7 Consider Bringing Nightwear

This one is up to you but I’d recommend packing some nice pyjamas.

Some cruise cabins do include bathrobes, but stepping out onto your balcony in your pyjamas is nice!

#8 The Most Important Thing to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise is a Coat

I would recommend that you pack at least one rain mac/coat.

The best thing to do is usually to wear this on embarkation day as then it doesn’t take up too much room in your suitcase.

As far as coat sizing goes bring a larger coat than you would usually wear because you’ll probably be layering up and wearing this over a sweater.

Don’t be fooled – if you are embarking in Seattle or Vancouver and the weather looks good, don’t assume it will be like that for the entire cruise.

The weather changes quickly and it can be sunny in one place and pouring with rain in another.

When I went to Alaska I only took my small “Pac a Mac” to save space. This is a light waterproof raincoat that fits into a small pouch or bag.

Alaskan Cruise – Packing List: Essentials

Your passport is the most important item you’ll pack.

If you are from America or Australia there are certain cruises that you can take without a passport.

All guests coming from overseas will need a valid passport. Six months of validity is required on your passport after you return home.

If you are planning an Alaska cruise, you might be wondering if you need a passport if you are an American citizen .

You need to check the paperwork you will need prior to booking your cruise – no refunds are provided for failure to provide proper documentation.

As a general rule, if you are a United States citizen, you do not need a passport on a “closed-loop” sailing. You will need a birth certificate and a Government-issued photo I.D. at the very least.

Find out everything you need to know about passports and “closed loop” cruises here:

Do You Need A Passport To Cruise? (Everything You Need To Know)

The advice of a good Travel Agent is invaluable when it comes to knowing what paperwork/visas are required for your cruise.

Find out why I would recommend using a trusted Travel Agent here:

cruise for alaska from seattle

Bring Your Cruise Ticket to Make Everything Easier

Prior to your cruise, you will either:

  • Be emailed a cruise ticket (most common).
  • A ticket will be sent to you in the mail (less common).

If you are able to print out the cruise ticket it makes the process of checking in for the cruise much easier.

At check-in all that you need is this cruise ticket and your passport. A credit card also usually makes things easier, but you don’t need that to embark on your cruise.

In theory, the cruise line could find your booking from your passport but it’s much easier if you print the ticket yourself.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance Details

You will need travel insurance for an Alaskan cruise, even if you are American. If you did become unwell or injure yourself treatment onboard is still  incredibly expensive  and getting you back to land to seek further treatment can cost a lot.

If you are from outside of the USA this is even more important.

As well as covering medical costs, travel insurance can also cover you for things like lost luggage, and even missed ports (if your travel insurance includes this feature. )

Find my complete guide to travel insurance below – why you need it and how to get it here:

If you are not yet convinced that you need travel insurance to cruise, check out this post which tells the story of a man who died when he had a stroke on a Carnival cruise. He was unable to get back to the U.S. as he didn’t have travel insurance and died.

5 Cruise Nightmares Caused by Not Having The Correct Travel Insurance (Real-Life Examples)

Bring Any Prescriptions You May Need (Plus Extras!)

When cruising it’s always important that you bring any prescription medicines you may need and also bring your prescriptions with you if possible.

This way if you run out of your medicine when on board for any reason you may be able to get a refill and it provides a useful record of which medicines you take.

It’s important that when you check in for your cruise you bring medicines in your hand luggage rather than your checked-in bag. You will be separated from your checked-in bag for a while and there is always the possibility that it could be lost.

Cruise ships do have pharmacies on board but the medications they supply are limited. To learn more about the onboard medical facilities, check out the post below:

Cruise Ships Don’t Have Full Pharmacies on Board – Here’s What They Have

Print Your Luggage Tags if Possible

Many cruise lines will send you luggage tags. Some send the actual tags and others you are required to download and print at home.

This isn’t usually mandatory and if you don’t do it you can get the tags at the port – but it makes things much easier if you have already done it at home.

The last thing you want is to have to stand in another line for tags when you get to the port!

I used PVC luggage tags like the ones shown below. You just slip the paper tags inside, and they will remain safe through wind and rain – the paper tags won’t disintegrate!

Swatom Cruise Luggage Tags PVC Holders -Waterproof-Clear Luggage Tag-Zip Seal-Etag Bag with Steel Loops 8 P (7.3x3.5'')

You NEED to Pack Travel Adapters For Your Cruise

I always make sure I have travel adapter when I cruise, you might not know what power outlets you will find in your cabin.

Generally speaking, cruise ships have a combination of UK and US plug sockets so bring an adapter for both. You can usually buy adapters onboard in the gift shop but these are incredibly expensive.

I use the travel adapter below, it is all I ever need.

HAOZI Universal Travel Adapter, All-in-one International Power Adapter with 2.4A Dual USB, European Wall Charger for UK, EU, AU, Asia Covers 150+Countries (Blue)

Bring Your Phone/Camera to Take Photos

I think this one goes without saying, but make sure you pack your phone if you have one.

I use mine primarily as a camera and carry it with me everywhere.

If you have a separate camera or action camera bring this too – but don’t forget to bring all the chargers that you’ll need!

I’d also suggest bringing a battery pack if your phone is likely to keep running out of battery.

There isn’t much more annoying than wanting to take a photo of something and realizing your battery has run out.

Emma Cruises phone

You’ll Need a Credit/Debit Card and Cash

It’s usually easiest to attach a credit or debit card to your onboard account and to pay for your onboard expenses this way.

On many cruise lines, you are also able to ‘load’ cash onto your onboard account or pay in cash at the end. I also suggest bringing some cash for things like taxis and tipping.

It can be difficult to know just how much cash to bring on a cruise, I usually bring very little, to find out what I do recommend, check out this post:

How Much Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise? Budgeting Guide

cruise for alaska from seattle

Save Money on Laundry by Bringing Travel Wash

If you think that you may need to wash some items of clothing but don’t want to pay for the onboard laundry, one option is to bring a small bottle of travel wash and wash some clothes in the sink.

I’ve done this on a number of occasions and it does work well for certain things.

Some cruise lines do have self-service laundries and if the cruise line you’re cruising with has these this is usually a way to wash your clothes easily and cheaply. That said, don’t spend too much of your cruise doing laundry!

As I have the highest loyalty status with Norwegian Cruise Line , I get a free bag of laundry as one of the perks. I make sure I always use it, and take some clothes back home clean.

Find out more about the laundry service on Norwegian ships here:

Norwegian Cruise Line Laundry – Price List, Services, and Packages

Embarkation Day Bag

When you embark you will check in your luggage and it’ll arrive later in your cabin.

For a few hours on embarkation day, you will be without access to your luggage so it is important that you keep any essentials that you need in your embarkation day bag.

This is My Embarkation Day T-Shirt - UNISEX T-Shirt – Emma Cruises

I usually keep everything I need in my Mia  Tui  handbag. I have been using my Mia Tui bags since 2017, and would never travel without one.

A few things to keep in your embarkation day bag are:

  • Any Medicines You May Need
  • Your Passport
  • Your Car/House Keys
  • Cameras/Phones
  • Cruise Tickets and Documentation

I bought my first Mia Tui bag in 2017 and I've not used another brand since. They come with me on every cruise and are FANTASTIC. They are beautiful, almost indestructible and have so many pockets and useful parts.

Alaska Cruise – Packing List: Extras You Might Want To Consider

A small umbrella.

Having a little umbrella in your bag can save the day when on an Alaskan cruise. I chose not to take one on my cruise though, as I was trying to save space.

I wouldn’t recommend bringing a full-sized umbrella as having to carry this around can be quite annoying – but a small fold-up one that can fit in your backpack or handbag is definitely a good idea.

If you are cruising with a luxury cruise line like Viking they will have umbrellas available for you to use.

To learn more about cruising with Viking, including how to make the most of the included drinks, check out this post:

Viking Ocean Cruises: What’s included (12 things)

viking cruises umbrella

Hat and Gloves

It can get incredibly cold and having a simple hat and gloves may be a good idea, depending on when you are travelling. That said, I didn’t take a hat or gloves and I didn’t need them.

You probably won’t need these in the peak of summer (July-August) as it’s more likely to be rainy than cold but if you are travelling at any other time of year you might want to pack some.

You May Need Suncream/Sunscreen

Many people think of Icebergs and Glaciers when they think about Alaska so they’re surprised to find the temperatures in summer can be warmer than they expected.

In fact temperatures can rise to above 80 degrees, so make certain you bring along plenty of suncream.

Use a high-SPF sunscreen and always remember to reapply.

You would be able to buy this on the ship if you forgot it, but toiletries sold on the ship are usually very expensive.

A Small Fold Up Coat

On my Alaska cruise, I took a very small fold-up waterproof coat that folds into a bag. (Known in Britain as a Pac a Mac)

Foldaway coats like this are great because they don’t make you too warm. Sometimes wearing a big coat can feel too hot even if it is raining – particularly if you are walking around a lot.

“Tech” Items I pack

  • Insta360 and charger – great for taking drone-like shots from above
  • InstaGo (a hands-free action camera)
  • DJ Pocket Osmo 2 Camera
  • My Microphone, battery and card reader

cruise for alaska from seattle

“Essentials” That I Didn’t Pack

Obviously, what is considered essential for one person, may not be for another. Below is a list of items that other travellers consider “essential” – but I didn’t bother to pack on this occasion.

  • Hiking poles are supposed to help you spread the weight of your load when walking – I have never used them, well apart from a charity walk I did where I walked 57km in a day, I don’t do that on cruises though!
  • I travelled in April/ early May and I thought I was unlikely to need one – I was right.
  • For the same reason as above, I didn’t pack a hat, I felt I was unlikely to need them.
  • We had excursions booked on port days on this trip – which is very unusual for me. I had no time to read books.
  • I had a drinks package on this cruise, so didn’t need them.
  • There was lots going on onboard, I never needed to amuse myself.
  • When I travelled it was too early in the season for Mosquitos. If I was travelling in June or July I might consider packing some.
  • As I was trying to save space, I didn’t pack any binoculars. If I returned to Alaska, I might take them as we did see Orcas when sailing.
  • For the same reason, I didn’t pack a hat and gloves – I felt it was unlikely to be cold enough to need them (it wasn’t.)
  • I don’t sew at home – so I am not going to sew when I am on holiday!
  • Some people take laundry bags to keep their dirty clothes separate. I always use packing cubes when I travel, so I use one of those to put my dirty clothes in or I put dirty clothes straight into my suitcase.
  • Although it is often handy to have a small, lightweight umbrella in your rucksack as weather can be unpredictable, I didn’t take one on this occasion.
  • This is one thing I have never thought to pack – some people take one so that they can highlight things on the daily schedule they wish to see.
  • I always take a normal pen in my bag, but never a highlighter.
  • Some people take magnetic hooks to stick to the magnetic cabin walls so they can hang extra things up.
  • I never do this, I prefer to travel light wherever possible and don’t know what I’d hang up.
  • Many people (particularly on Disney cruises) like to decorate their doors with an array of decorative magnets. I never feel the need to do that although I enjoy looking at them.
  • Although I have a set of luggage scales at home, I never pack them. My suitcase is never heavy enough that excess luggage charges are going to be a problem.
  • Cruise ships have coat hangers in every wardrobe – why people need to take extra is beyond me. Clearly, they don’t pack as light as me…

Find details of the Mia Packing cubes I recommend below. They are great for saving space in your suitcase, they make unpacking simple – and I use them for putting dirty laundry in as the week goes on.

Protect your clothes from stains, wrinkles, and damage while traveling. Our packing cubes also help you avoid overweight charges and airport stress by rearranging weights between bags or taking one cube with you as a carry-on item.

Celebrity Edge to spend first summer in Alaska in 2024

Celebrity Cruises

By Laura Hyde | 20 May 2024

For the first time ever, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge is to spend the 2024 summer season offering itineraries in Alaska. The ship is currently sailing a seven-night roundtrip voyage from Seattle, USA, with stops in the Alaskan ports of Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

The ship will sail further roundtrip itineraries from Seattle and one-way, six- or seven-night voyages between Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle from May to September. Itineraries will include visits to Ketchikan, known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’; the Endicott Arm where guests can see local wildlife including brown bears, bald eagles, and wolves; Alaska’s capital city Juneau, which sits between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts, and Gastineau Channel; and Skagway, where visitors can learn about the port’s gold rush history. On its return to Seattle, the ship will sail to Victoria, Canada, through the Inside Passage.

“There's no better way to see the pristine Alaskan wilderness than onboard Celebrity Edge, which was specifically designed to create a closer connection between guests and destinations,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “Our elevated vacation options are redefining travel, especially in this region.”

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Edge’s outward-facing design will provide guests with views of Alaska’s glaciers

Celebrity Cruises, as part of Royal Caribbean Group, engages port communities across Alaska through its Sea the Future commitment, including several partnerships with local retailers to offer guests access to Alaska-owned products and experiences. Royal Caribbean Group has also supported the creation of the Ketchikan Salmon Walk, which allows visitors to learn about the life cycle of salmon in Ketchikan Creek, as well as the Sitka Sound Science Center’s Scientists in the Schools (SIS) programme.

Looking for a new quilting project that's not only beautiful but steeped in history and meaning? Look no further than the Double T block, a popular block found in quilts from the mid to late 1800s. Not only is this block visually striking, but it also holds special significance as a symbol of the Temperance Movement, championed mostly by women, and meant to call attention to the abolishment of the use of alcohol.

And the best part? This quilt pattern is easy to piece, making it perfect for quilters of all skill levels. Simply use a variety of light, medium, and dark fabrics for a scrappy look, or experiment with different placements of lights and darks to give each block a unique and varied appearance. Alternatively, you could use the same fabric for each block to create a contemporary and striking style.

Measuring 55"x69.5", this quilt is perfect for a variety of uses, from a cozy throw for your home to a meaningful gift for a loved one. And with its simple but elegant design, this quilt is sure to become a cherished heirloom for generations to come.

Finished Size: 55" x 69.5"

Enjoy two glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary — including Glacier Bay National Park, and Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.

Inside Passage Roundtrip Seattle

Sail the Inside Passage, a series of channels and waterways formed by the march of glaciers, on your 7-day roundtrip Alaska cruise from Seattle. With an abundance of landmarks and wildlife, take in the sights and sounds of the Inside Passage from the comfort of your ship or on a thrilling excursion ashore. Explore fjords, glaciers and Gold Rush-era towns on weekend voyages out of Seattle.

Inside Passage Roundtrip San Francisco

Begin by sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Pacific Coast. As you voyage into the Inside Passage, enjoy one of the best ways to explore the fjords, small towns and natural landmarks with your favorite people.

Inside Passage Roundtrip Vancouver

Alaska cruises that inspire

Feed your hunger for adventure on a roundtrip Alaska cruise from Vancouver, B.C. Wind your way through fjords, by bright-green forests and through quaint Gold Rush-era towns on your way to the wonders of Glacier Bay National Park. Then experience age-old traditions with the locals.

Voyage of the Glaciers Grand Adventure

14-day Alaska cruises

Sail 500 miles deeper into the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound on our back-to-back Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise. Spend 14 days roundtrip from Vancouver, B.C., stopping in historic port cities like Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. With its roaring glaciers, rugged mountains and deep fjords, Glacier Bay National Park feels like a dream. With 3.3 million acres to explore, cruise to this world-renowned landmark — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and let the landscapes inspire your next adventure. Princess Cruises is an authorized concessioner of Glacier Bay National Park.

Alaska Cruise Ports of Call

  • College Fjord
  • Endicott Arm
  • Glacier Bay National Park
  • Hubbard Glacier
  • Icy Strait Point
  • Victoria, B.C.

The Harriman Expedition discovered College Fjord in 1899 and named the towering glaciers after the great East Coast universities of the United States, like the Harvard Glacier. With the largest collection of tidewater glaciers in the world, your scenic Alaska cruise through the fjord will make a lasting memory.

Endicott Arm is a jewel in Alaska’s crown. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. Icebergs and harbor seals decorate the water below while Dawes Glacier soars into the sky above. Revel in the beauty of Mother Nature’s masterpiece and listen closely as the scenery whispers secrets of times long ago during your cruise to Alaska.

When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Listen to Margerie Glacier’s signature crack and boom rumble across the waves. Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park.

Located between the Chilkat River and the Lynn Canal, Haines is the home of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where as many as 4,000 bald eagles gather each fall to feast on spawning salmon along the river. As many as 80 have been seen perched in a single tree and more than a hundred may be captured within the frame of a single photograph.

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers. Zipline over the wilderness, watch a tribal dance or kayak in coastal waters to see the wildlife up close during your Alaska cruise vacation.

Juneau is unlike any other city in the United States. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise.

Known for its timber, Ketchikan hosts the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where athletes throw, race and chop their way to victory. Explore one of the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at the Totem Pole Heritage Center, or stroll along Creek Street. As the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan’s waters make for incredible fishing. Cast your rod into a sea of opportunity on a cruise to Alaska.

On an Alaska cruise, take your pick of attractions in the port of Sitka. See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center. Encounter wildlife in their natural habitat at the Fortress of the Bear. Or experience the culture of Russian Alaska on a visit to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and relive Native history at the Sheldon Jackson Museum.

Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training.

Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland", Valdez is known for its breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It is also well-known for its role in the transportation of crude oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which ends in Valdez. Explore the charming waterfront area and take in the flavors of Valdez through culinary experiences at restaurants such as the Valdez Brewery and the Fat Mermaid.

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure.

Wrangell is a charming and scenic harbor known for its local fishing industry. It is not as bustling as larger ports in Alaska and maintains its historic charm and offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Explore its historic downtown and learn about the local culture and Native heritage while in Wrangell.

Alaska Cruise Experience

We have a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with our guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks.

Alaska Glaciers

One of the biggest reasons people visit

Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

Alaska Wildlife

Untamed, just like Alaska

Alaska is home to a rich array of wildlife, from the famous Big Five animals that live in Denali National Park — grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou — to bald eagles and humpback whales that migrate through the Inside Passage. On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights.

Alaska Mountains & National Parks

National treasures

With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Alaska excursions

Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience.

Alaska Cruise Onboard Experience

Our award-winning North to Alaska program brings local personalities, culture and cuisine on board and ashore to immerse you in all things Alaska during your cruise to the Great Land.

Alaska Seafood

Fresh and bountiful, like Alaska itself

Alaska's seafood is famous, and we bring the best to you with locally inspired dishes from the state’s best eateries. With Cook My Catch excursions, catch your own salmon or halibut with the help of a local expert, and in the evening our talented chefs will prepare your haul for your dinner — a Princess exclusive. From ship to shore, the best is at your fingertips on our Alaska cruises.

Meet Local Alaskans

Real Alaska from local Alaskans

Alaskans are inviting people who love to share what makes their state unique. Watch lumberjacks in action, learn from Glacier Bay National Park rangers and craft with a Native totem pole carver. Or listen to harrowing Tales from the Deadliest Catch fishermen and climbers who have summited Denali during your Alaska cruise.

Unique Alaska Cruise Experiences

Great experiences from the great land

Travel back in time and pan for gold like a prospector during the Gold Rush or see the Northern Lights in the planetarium. At the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, explore our treehouse and enjoy unmatched views of Denali. Or savor tree-inspired bites at our very own Sappy Hour. Dive deeper into what makes the Great Land special on your cruise to Alaska.
