Traveling to Sayulita in late June- Family of three (all adults):

1) Do we buy-in to the multiple advertisements for various tours (the ATV/bridge adventure, island sailings, charter fishing, etc, etc), or just wait until we arrive? We’ve found in the past that buying-in pre-trip being somewhat cost-scammy, with many of the tour operators accepting walk-ups for a fraction of the pre-trip but-in cost.

2) How close are the round pyramids, and are they easy to get to?

3) After reading multiple posts, what’s the final verdict on the ocean water (for surfing, playing, etc), and tap for brushing teeth/bathing, etc?

4) Recommendation for airport transport?

5) If you had only three days, what would you definitely NOT miss?

Thanks, everyone!

To answer your questions in order:

1) For June (or anytime if visiting for more than a day) I would recommend waiting until you're in town to book activities.

3) You will get several opinions on this. You will be there in the low season so the town won't be busy and the waste treatment plant will not be working at its maximum. The rainy season won't have started so the river will be dry. Also, near Don Pedro's restaurant on the beach there is a creek that flows to the ocean during the rainy season. That can carry untreated waste - not much - but it isn't making it anywhere near the ocean and also isn't as polluted as it would be in high season. The last water quality test was done in the height of the high season and, while the results exceeded acceptable levels in the US, they are well within the acceptable level in Mexico and many other reputable countries around the world. NEVER use tap water for brushing your teeth though you can use it for showering, washing dishes (air dry them) etc. If you're cooking at home or making light meals, use bottled purified water which your rental property should provide. Add a couple of drops of Microdyn which should also be provided but can be found in any corner store.

4) Depending on where you're staying and how. much luggage the three of you will be carrying, you could potentially take the bus and then get a taxi from very near the bus station to your rental. If you do that, you will cross the highway via the pedestrian overpass and taxis are right at the foot of the ramp. There are also taxis there and you can talk them down to a reasonable fare (sorry I don't know what that is right now). If you want to have a private taxi waiting for you, with cold beer and cold water available in the car , I highly recommend Jose Ramos Transportation. https://www.sayulitalife.com/ramos-taxi The cost seems high but it's the same as other private companies in town, give or take, and they are an established and respected business.

5) This is a hard one and depends entirely on what your interests are. It will be hot and humid so plan accordingly. There's some great deep sea fishing, enjoyable sunset jungle horseback rides (both activities available through Rancho Manuel) https://ranchomanuel.com/en/home/ plus many other activities. Please do not go on an ATV tour. It's disruptive to the town and, more importantly, to the jungle life.

eaglerider pacific coast tour

Hi there! Harry is our destination expert whom you can always depend on for the most up-to-date and reliable information regarding anything Sayulita :) along with what he's mentioned above, I'd like to add on:

In regards to number three, I was in Sayulita last month immediately following Semana Santa (a week of pure tourism chaos for this small town). My friends and I swam in the ocean at the main beach multiple times, as well as Playa los Muertos and Carricitos. We also showered regularly. None of us, nor did anyone else in my party contract any sort of gastrointestinal illness. It is NOT recommended to drink the tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Any good rental will provide you with a large container of filtered water for consumption. Also, don't make your ice with tap water.

At the end of the day, you will unfortunately not be getting a final verdict. I can only vouch from my personal experience as someone who swam frequently in the ocean recently, which I don't think many of the other chirpers on here can say they've done... just saying.

For number five, I'm going to give you some restaurants and bars that you should not miss - because Sayulita is an eating and drinking paradise.

For three breakfasts at three different restaurants, check out El Espresso (located across from the plaza; HIGHLY recommend ordering chilaquiles rollo con pollo, huevos rancheros, and the pork machaca burrito - if anyone if your party likes sweet things for breakfast, my stepdad loves the frappuccinos), Mary's (little pink building across from La Rustica; they also make some amazing tacos for dinner), and La Rustica (slightly more upscale brunch spot).

It's going to be rather hot and uncomfortable in June, but if you're feeling lunch, Naty's Cocina is great. I recommend the chicken chipotle tacos and the pork y nopales tacos. Super cheap, also.

Two no-miss dinners... Don Pedro's is by far the most consistent restaurant in all of Sayulita. They're located on the beach and *slightly* fancy (emphasis on slightly). Never received bad service or had a bad meal here. Everything on that menu is fantastic. And you cannot leave Sayulita without sampling a few al pastor tacos. I recommend Tacos Tal Ivan, specifically the location closer to the bridge (not the one by the plaza), and eating them right there at the stand.

If you guys like desserts, check out Wa Kika for some delicious fruit paletas (located next to La Rustica) and Mimi the cake lady for a slice of tres leches or flan. Her table is set up across from Mi Tiendita by the plaza. There are usually two cake tables over there, but hers has a banner that says "Mimi's postres" so make sure you buy your stuff from that one. There's also THE churro guy who will park his truck just over the bridge on the north side if you like fresh churros. He's there inconsistently, but those churros are truly the superior ones in town.

For bars and just cool places to hangout in general, La Isla on the north end is nice. My parents pretty much just camped out there our entire trip one year. I've heard it can get rather noisy at night though, so afternoon-early evening is a good time to get a drink here. Wild Iris is by far my favorite bar in town - it's across from Hotel Sayulinda (big orange building downtown). Marcelo makes the best margaritas. La Mariscal is, I feel, a very underrated bar in town. They're across from Attico Hookah Bar and make amazing mojitos. I like to sit there with my drink and enjoy the music at Attico from a comfortable distance.

Zouave also has great drinks. Slightly pricier, but some amazing mezcal margaritas. They're the bar for La Petit Hafa hotel, the big red building near Yambak.

I think that's more than enough recommendations for three days, hehe. You're gonna have an awesome trip! Please report back once you return if you can!

Arrive Vancouver

Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Vancouver. Upon arrival, transfer independently to the Georgian Court Hotel, Vancouver, where you spend the first night getting to know this incredible Canadian city.

Today, you will have additional time to explore Vancouver at your leisure. This unique city offers something for everyone. From its striking mountains to the bustle of the city’s art and music scene, this British Columbia seaport does not disappoint. Later, join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a welcome reception, where you can enjoy a glass of wine, meet new friends, and discuss the exciting journey ahead.

Vancouver & Victoria

This morning, enjoy a visit to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park – home to Vancouver’s first visitor attraction, the original suspension bridge built in 1889.  Today, the park also includes Cliffwalk, a cantilevered walking clinging to the granite cliff and Treetops Adventure, seven suspension bridges through the evergreens taking you up to 100ft above the forest floor. After your visit, head out on an orientation tour of Vancouver, including Gastown, Canada Place and Stanley Park, home to a collection of First Nations totem poles. You’ll have free time to have lunch on your own, with many great eateries to choose from. This afternoon board a ferry and sail through the beautiful Gulf Islands to Vancouver Island, an idyllic place known for its fishing and art communities. You’ll end your day here in British Columbia’s stunning capital city, Victoria.

Butchart Gardens

Start your day wandering through world-renowned Butchart Gardens, a beautiful natural historical site of Canada featuring beautiful floral displays. After Butchart Gardens, enjoy an orientation tour covering Mount Tolmie, the Inner Harbour and its Parliament Buildings, Canada’s oldest Chinatown and view the last remnants of Fort Victoria. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure – perhaps you’ll want to book an optional Whale Watching Excursion. The three-hour expedition boards in the waters of Victoria and while it can’t be guaranteed in advance which of the abundant marine wildlife you’ll see on your journey, chances are you’ll also spot magnificent bald eagles, porpoises or seals.

Victoria to Sun Peaks

This morning, ferry across the Strait of Georgia and continue your scenic journey through British Columbia. Travel along Coquihalla highway and climb the summit of Coquihalla Pass and cross Thompson Plateau, passing along forests of Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, Douglas firs and ponderosa pines. Enjoy a stop in Hope before continuing to Sun Peaks where you’ll end a day of unbelievably scenic travel with dinner.

Jasper National Park

After breakfast, your journey takes you along the legendary Yellowhead Highway towards Jasper National Park, part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route, a stop will be made at the Mount Robson Visitor Centre in Mount Robson Provincial Park, the second oldest park in British Columbia’s park system and truly one of the world’s crown jewels. Enjoy the best views of Mount Robson, which at 12,972 ft (3,954 meters) is the most prominent mountain in North America’s Rocky Mountain range and the highest point in the Canadian Rockies. Arrive in the wonderland of Jasper National Park with its soothing mineral hot springs, rugged glaciers, colourful meadows, and majestic mountains. After a brief orientation tour through town, you’ll have the option to explore on your own or book an optional Float Trip.

Jasper and the Columbia Icefield

Start the day with an informative walk on the trails of Maligne Canyon, one of the most beautiful gorges in the Canadian Rockies. Then, embark on a narrated cruise across the serene waters of iconic Maligne Lake (seasonal), one of the jewels of the Canadian Rockies (please note that this activity is seasonal and subject to closure as the lake may be frozen). Stop at Spirit Island, one of the most photographed sites in the Canadian Rockies. Travel along the majestic Icefields Parkway and arrive at the Columbia Icefield for your stay at the Glacier View Lodge, the first and only glacier-view resort in Canada. Venture out onto the amazing Glacier Skywalk where you will be treated to an after-hours visit onto the cliff-edged glass-floored walkway.

After enjoying a gourmet dinner with wine, you can step out onto the Viewing Deck, sip a drink in the library or relax inside the Moraine Lounge.

Icefields, Glaciers and Lakes to Banff National Park

Following a hearty breakfast, your local expert will escort you to a special before-hours glacier tour. Venture out onto Athabasca Glacier in an Ice Explorer. Then, join your guide for a stroll atop the ice and discover the beauty and immensity of the glacier. Learn about the history and geology of the region and enjoy a warm beverage out on the glacier itself. After this morning’s icy adventure, continue south to Lake Louise and admire its blue waters and Victoria Glacier. You’ll have the opportunity to feel truly immersed in nature as you spend a portion of your afternoon here. Journey on to the resort town of Banff, your home for the next two nights. This evening, dine in town and unwind in your stunning natural surroundings.

Banff National Park

Today is yours to spend exploring the rugged charms of the park. Choose from several optional experiences, including a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight over the magnificent Canadian Rockies, or a ride onboard the Banff Gondola, a scenic cableway that can take you to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. If you’d rather spend the day on your own, join your Travel Director on a Banff Orientation Tour covering Bow Falls, Surprise Corner and a few other local sights.

Glacier National Park

From craggy plains to mountainous landscapes, after a stop in Calgary, today you’ll cross the U.S. border into Montana to Glacier National Park. Revel in your first encounter with the park, a region encompassing over 1 million acres — including parts of two mountain ranges, over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centrepiece of what has been referred to as the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem,” a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles. Settle in for the evening and look forward to tomorrow’s day of exploration.

Going to the Sun and Glacier National Park

Board a private Red Jammer bus to cruise along the Going-To-The-Sun Road in style. The Going-to-the-Sun Road is the only road that traverses through Glacier National Park and the first to have been registered in all the following categories: National Historic Place, National Historic Landmark, and Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. During your narrated trip you’ll witness stunning views from Logan Pass and the marvels of the park’s wild interior. Disembark at Lake McDonald, the largest lake in Glacier National Park. Over an insightful Legends of Glacier MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, join performing and recording artist and enrolled citizen of the Blackfeet Nation in Western Montana Jack Gladstone. Jack will illuminate the chronological history of Glacier National Park through an interweaving of story and song. Tonight, rest up in a classic Swiss-chalet-style lodge with spectacular mountain views.

Lake Coeur d'Alene and Spokane

Today you’ll continue to the beautiful shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, one of America’s most beautiful lakes, and arrive in Spokane to stay at The Historic Davenport, Autograph Collection hotel. This is Washington State’s grandest hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has welcomed several famous faces including Amelia Earhart and Clark Gable. End the night with dinner at a local restaurant.

Wonderful Wines

Wine connoisseurs rejoice. Today, you’ll head through the wide, endless horizons of the wine-producing area of Washington State. Enjoy a Highlight Lunch focusing on fresh, local and artisanal ingredients. Then it’s on to Seattle for an evening of leisure at your hotel.

This morning head out on a Seattle Orientation tour where you’ll see Puget Sound, Pioneer Square and Pike Place Market, where you should watch out for flying fish! The afternoon brings you an Insight Choice. Either head to the Space Needle, with its jaw-dropping panoramic views of the unique skyline or the Chihuly Gardens and Glass exhibit, where the work of world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly is housed. In the evening, join your Travel Director and fellow guests for a Celebration Dinner with wine at Ivar’s Salmon House. Here you’ll find the Northwest’s best dining, as you take in the views of Seattle’s waterfront.

Journey Home

Your journey concludes today, not before one final hearty breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Seattle before independently making your way to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

Northern Oregon Coast Road Trip

Day 1: newport .

We recommend starting your Oregon Coast road trip in Newport . One of the most charming towns on the Oregon Coast, this spot is full of serene beauty and lots of opportunities for family fun.

Keep in mind that Newport is one of the busiest towns along the coast for tourism, so you may run into crowds here or there. But the value of the attractions far outweigh any congestion.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium (2820 SE Ferry Slip Rd, Newport, OR 97365) is one of the main attractions in Newport. One of the largest aquariums in that part of the country, it has some impressive exhibits and over 200 different species of sea animals. It’s a great place to explore in you have an animal lover in the family and is also a fun place to escape to on a rainy day.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Beauty area is home to some of the most striking Pacific Ocean views in this part of the Oregon Coast. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is famous for being the tallest lighthouse along the coastline, so that’s reason enough to pay a visit!

Nye Beach

Nye Beach is one of the best places to visit if you’re looking to spend some time on the beach in Newport. The sandy beach here is great for sand combing and kite flying. And the quaint surrounding neighborhood has no shortage of yummy restaurants and charming shops to explore.

Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area

Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area is one of the most renowned natural wonders along the Oregon Coast. The famous punchbowl-shaped rock formation shouldn’t be passed on, especially by any marine life and nature lovers.

Depending on the time of day you visit (low tide vs. high tide), you can witness some amazing sights. Travelers who are interested in hiking down into the inside of the bowl should visit during low tide. While high tide makes for a dramatic water show, with waves crashing into the walls of the bowl.

This is a wonderful place to see the many different species of wildlife that the Newport area is known for. From Sea Lions to whales, you never know what you might spot!

Where to Eat in Newport

Mo’s Seafood and Chowder is one of the most popular restaurants in Newport, and for good reason. The clam chowder served here is the stuff of legend passed down from generation to generation. Be sure to grab a bowl while visiting Newport.

The Original Mo’s Address: 622 SW Bay Blvd., Newport, OR 97365

Day 2: Pacific City

Moving on from Newport, a little over an hour north on Oregon Coast Highway, will lead you to Pacific City . This spot is an outdoor person’s dream come true. Rich with stunning landscapes that far surpass the breathtaking ocean views, this locale also features some world-class hiking trails and dunes.

Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area

For travelers seeking reprieve from city life, a quick trip outside Pacific City to Cape Kiwanda may be just what the doctor ordered. This sandstone landscape is home to one of the best hikes in this area. The steep ascent up the great dune can be challenging, but the view is well worth the effort.

The vantage point from the top of Cape Kiwanda offers a stellar perspective of Nestucca Bay. It’s also an amazing place for kids to witness science in the real world. The impact of erosion is on full display here as visitors can see the sandstone weathered and depleted over time by the power of the incoming, crashing waves.

Bob Straub State Park

Bob Straub State Park is another wonderful place to explore and enjoy nature while visiting Pacific City. Known for its dune trails, this park is also a great spot to comb the beach for shelling or look out for fascinating tide pools.

A fun fact about Bob Straub State Park, it’s actually a designated horse park, so don’t be surprised to see some land roaming animals around as well!

Green Acres Beach

Green Acres Beach is an amazing place to visit if you’re looking to spend a memorable day on a beach along the Oregon Coast. It’s one of the most popular spots in this area for horseback riding tours. Riding along the shoreline while enjoying the sunshine or a misty sunset makes for a moment to carry with you for years to come.

Where to Eat Near Pacific City

Pelican Brewing is the best place to eat in town, especially if you plan on spending any time at Cape Kiwanda, as it’s only a 2-minute drive away!

Favorites at this pub-style eatery include regional go-to’s like clam chowder and fish and chips. Being a brewery, the beer is also top-notch here. Food and beverages aside, it’s the patio dining that really seals the deal at this place. As long as the weather holds out, you can comfortably enjoy a tasty meal outdoors with the beach landscape right in front of you.

Address: 33180 Cape Kiwanda Dr, Pacific City, OR 97135

Where to Stay in Pacific City

Surf & Sand Inn is a comfortable and convenient place to stay while spending time in Pacific City. The cabin-style motel features spacious rooms equipped with the makings of home. Cozy beds along with a lovely full kitchen, including a refrigerator, stovetop and microwave. Add in the flat-screen TV, and you’re all set!

There aren’t a lot of extra amenities outside the comforts of the room, but the property does have an excellent location. Parking is included in the room’s rate, and you can walk to Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Pacific City Beach, or Bob Straub State Park, all within 15 minutes!

Check Surf & Sand Inn reviews on TripAdvisor and find the best deals on Hotels.com or Booking.com

Day 3: Cannon Beach

Another hour and a half north outside of Pacific City will bring travelers to Cannon Beach , the quintessential Oregon Coast beach town. It’s one of the best places on the coast to explore on foot.

There are lots of shops to explore near Hemlock Street, where you can find some fun souvenirs. Walking through town is a fun way to soak up the seaside town atmosphere.

Haystack Rock

No one should visit Cannon Beach without stopping by the famous Haystack Rock. One of the most raved-about landmarks along the Oregon Coast, the rock stands a whopping 235 feet. It’s staggering and majestic to experience in person.

Plus, it’s a sea life wonderland to explore during low tide. There are lots of tide pools around the bottom of Haystack Rock where excited travelers of all ages can behold all sorts of marine life species up close.

Where to Eat in Cannon Beach

Osprey Cafe is a local and tourist favorite eatery just down the road in Seaside. Known especially for its delicious breakfast, this restaurant serves tasty American food with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. To top it all off, they serve up the food with a smile and warm service.

If you do stop by, be sure to try the French Toast or Eggs Benedict to get your day started. And consider sampling the espresso bar if you need an extra jolt to set you off on the right foot!

Address: 2281 Beach Dr #5117, Seaside, OR 97138

Where to Stay in Cannon Beach

There are some amazing  Cannon Beach hotels , but the Inn at Cannon Beach is one of the best. It’s a great location close to the beach, but the property also boasts a gorgeous garden you could get lost in.

Hypoallergenic bedding and free cribs for families traveling with little ones make this one of the most family-friendly hotels in Cannon Beach. Not to mention the complimentary breakfast and beach towels, the Inn at Cannon Beach is a gem on the Oregon Coast.
