Food History of Jalandhar, Punjab, India

Sarson da saag (also sarson ka saag or mustard greens) is a popular Punjabi vegetarian dish consisting of leaves of the mustard plant, spinach, green chilli, fenugreek, ginger and salt. The dish is slowly simmered in its own juices over low heat until it develops the typical, buttery creaminess. In Punjab, it is topped with fried onions and fresh homemade butter. In Uttar Pradesh, however, the dish is topped with yogurt and tomatoes to slightly reduce its bitter and peppery taste. Due to the pungency of mustard leaves, broccoli, radish and turnip are sometimes added to enhance the flavors. Originally, sarson da saag was a staple of rural, hardworking people of Punjab. It is also often fed to children by their mothers due to its nutritious qualities. Attractive and vibrant, mustard greens provide an ideal accompaniment to makkai ki roti , a type of Indian corn-flour flatbread with a uniquely sturdy texture.

Kulcha is an Indian flatbread made with wheat flour, and it is commonly served as an accompaniment to chickpea curry. The bread is cooked in a tandoor or on a griddle, and it is usually brushed with ghee and served while still hot. Chewy and soft, it is also easily cooked on a traditional tawa , making it accessible both to the common people and royalty, a fact that led to its popularity in North India. In the royal kitchens, kulchas were typically stuffed with vegetables and meat. Guy Fieri's Biggest Fan Just Visited His 1000th 'Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives' Restaurant

How many have you been to?

guy fieri fan

You might consider yourself a fan of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives . But are you a "Goes to 1,000 Diners, Drive-In and Dives"-level fan?

Chances are, you've been nowhere near the amount of restaurants that superfan Bill Grella has visited since the show first premiered in 2007. As of this past Saturday, he just reached a new milestone: His 1,000th visit to a diner, drive-in, and/or dive.

To give you a sense of scale, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives has chronicled over 1,498 restaurants (and counting), meaning Grella has visited a whopping 2/3rds of the restaurants featured on the show. Based in the D.C. area, Grella says he's traveled all the way from Maine to Florida—even flying to Honolulu, Hawaii, to dine at the Rainbow Drive-In—with many places in between.

"The thing I love about my journey is the food, of course," Grella says. "But [what's] almost as fun for me is the experience and making friends with other Triple D fans and the restaurant staff."

bill grella

For his 1,000th visit, Grella visited Bub and Pop's , a D.C.-based sandwich shop that serves loaded Philadelphia-style hoagies; Fieri shot an episode there back in 2015. To celebrate the achievement, Grella was joined by family and friends he's made through his journey, including John and Colleen Bistor, who have each have been to 718 restaurants featured on the show.

When asked what meals have been the most memorable, Grella says there are a few stand-outs: the lobster ravioli at Rino's Place in Boston; the lobster pie at The Maine Diner in Wells, Maine; and the brisket at The Pecan Lodge in Dallas. But Grella is hesitant to pick a favorite. "I never say a place is my favorite because the places are so diverse," he says. "Some places I enjoy more for the atmosphere," he adds, saying that Lauer Krauts in Brighton, Colorado, and Chaps Pit Beef in Baltimore have impressed him both for their great food as well as their delightful staff.

If you, too, want to start chipping away at the nearly 1,500 spots Fieri has visited on Triple D, take some ordering advice from Grella. "Some people will only try what Guy had, but I don't. I have fallen in love with small plates since the portions are smaller and in many cases [are] the best items on the menu," and adds that experiencing the place is just as important as enjoying the food.

Improper food storage and handwashing among 8 health violations at 2 metro Phoenix restaurants

Portrait of Kunle Falayi

Maricopa County health inspectors cited two Valley restaurants for 8 health violations during the week of Aug. 30. The violations ranged from improper food holding temperatures to handwashing practices.

A priority violation is a major violation that directly contributes to an increased risk of foodborne illness or injury. If listed in inspection reports, remedies implemented during the inspection are noted.

During the week of Aug. 23, inspectors visited about 800 restaurants along with other food-serving facilities in hospitals, senior homes and schools. More than 370 restaurants received an "A" rating. See a sampling of the many restaurants inspectors graded "A" at the end of this article.

Deep Ellum restaurants see sales suffer amid infrastructure overhaul

The businesses are working to stay afloat, with one restaurant reporting a sales slip as high as 75%..

Infrastructure upgrades are having an adverse effect on the businesses along Commerce...

Restaurants in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood near downtown, specifically those on Commerce Street, say they have been affected by the ongoing public works being done by the city of Dallas and Oncor.

The work being done on Commerce Street has left restaurants without direct access to their facilities and left customers with the notion that the businesses are closed. It’s also left places like Cane Rosso and The Free Man Cajun Cafe & Lounge struggling for weeks to attract customers.

The extensive work, also taking place on Canton Street shown here, is part of a bond program...

The street is partially closed on the east sidewalk of Commerce Street between South Good Latimer Expressway and Henry Street, which gives the impression that the places are not open or operational.

“Our business has definitely gone down around 70% or 75% for two months,” said Hollie Contreras, director of Events and Catering of Cane Rosso, in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “It’s dramatic, very dramatic, and we’re not the only ones suffering. I think everybody here is.”

Cane Rosso specializes in Neapolitan-style pizzas. Much of its business is takeaway, which has also been affected because delivery drivers can’t park.

“It’s a nightmare. Our regular business has dropped completely low,” said Contreras. “It’s disheartening, and I know we always need improvements in our streets, but to take this much of an impact on the entire neighborhood, I think that’s what’s very upsetting.”

Get the scoop on the latest openings, closings, and where and what to eat and drink.

The work on Commerce Street is by the city of Dallas and Dallas-based utility company Oncor. It is part of the 2017 Bond Program , a city improvement project that was voted on and approved on Nov. 7, 2017, and contains 1,400 projects.

According to a City of Dallas spokesperson, the public works project is a complete street reconstruction that includes improvements to the drainage system, water mains and pedestrian improvements. Oncor is working on a project to relocate its electrical service duct bank.

Oncor’s project underway on Commerce Street is estimated to be completed in four weeks, according to the spokesperson.

The work began in this area, but the entire approved project will encompass Commerce Street from Good Latimer Expressway to Exposition Avenue.

Another affected business is The Free Man Cajun Cafe & Lounge, a restaurant at the corner of Commerce Street and Henry Street. The Free Man has been doubly struck as both streets have been closed.

“During the day is when it affects us the most, because at night we open the doors and let the music play, so people know we’re open,” Owner John Myers told The News. “Our business is down 25%.”

Only two weeks ago, Myers says, a Porta Potty was posted 10 feet from his front door, which kept his customers away, plus access to his parking lot is blocked.

The Free Man is also dealing a doubly harsh blow to the business.

“It’s terrible because, for some reason, they have cut us off in every direction, even on the sides. To get to us, you have to walk through a construction zone blocked off by two separate lines of police tape,” said Myers. “It’s a death knell.”

Businesses don’t know if there will be any support programs to help them cope with the losses.

The city spokesperson said the city and its contractor are coordinating with the Deep Ellum Foundation and local stakeholders to minimize the effects of construction.
