RITUAL, pt. 1

RITUAL - THE NEW ALBUM

The new Edge of Forever album Native Soul is coming soon on Frontiers Music Srl .

Edge of Forever - Ritual

The new musical path made of heavier guitars, epic choruses, and the finest and richest arrangements has brought the band to a much bigger crowd, expanding their spectrum from a mere Hard Rock band. The motivational lyrics, infused with positive mental attitude and stoicism, all under the Native American spiritual culture, are now a trademark of the band, and with RITUAL , when you thought you couldn't dig deeper into these subjects, the band explores and even goes straight to the core matter that afflicted a minority: the residential schools tragedy. RITUAL tells the story of the last two indigenous people speaking a language soon to be forgotten. The twins, a boy and a girl, were sent to two different residential schools and were told that there was no one else left from their Nation and they needed to forget everything they might remember from it, either language or culture. Secretly, they continued practicing their idiom, hoping to escape and find their twin somewhere in the world. The boy ends up escaping school and starts a lifelong journey which leads him to meeting his sister on his bed of death. The album tells a story of pride, strength, pain, but also ultimate joy and fulfillment in being who you truly and deeply are.

Edge Of Forever Interview

edge of forever tour

Ritual is the third album from the Italian band Edge Of Forever since they reunited about five years ago, and their sixth overall. Vocalist Alessandro Del Vecchio (Jorn, Archon Angel, Silent Force) fills us in on their new record.

Chad Bowar: How did the songwriting process for Ritual compare to previous albums? Alessandro Del Vecchio: For the first time since we actually reunited, this album has the whole band contributing to the songwriting. I’m still the major songwriter but in lots of the songs, especially in the “Ritual” suite, the whole band has contributed even in the vocal melodies department which is where I’ve always been kinda leading the game. But I have to say that this has brought a newer and fresher approach which I really like and I guess the result is proof of the strength we have when we all work in synergy.

What will be your strongest memory of the recording of the album? I really enjoyed the whole recording process and as a band we’re always super chill and have fun when we’re together. As a collaborative though, nothing beats the songwriting process. This is where we always have the strongest moments because it is where we actually build the foundations of the album itself. I love when we gather ideas and go back and forth and challenge ourselves on which solution would work better.

What was the biggest challenge in recording it? I won’t lie, the vocal recordings. This is definitely the most naturally fitting album I’ve ever recorded as a singer, but the amount of choirs and backing vocals really makes every song a mountain to climb. Since I’m the only singer in the band I have to jump on every harmony line and I normally quadruple every take and for songs like “Baptized In Fire” or “Taunting Souls” the hours spent to record all these parts become monstrous! Obviously, besides the price to pay, I honestly think there’s never been a record that I sang better than Ritual . My voice has really found a home here.

What’s the lyrical concept? The album tells the story of two Haida twins, a boy and a girl, that have been taken away from their nation and brought to a residential school. Here they are divided so that they are not in touch with their culture and they can become civilized and fit the “white” world. The girl understands that she has to fake her becoming a civilized person while hiding her culture. The boy becomes a rebel and is able to escape from being burnt alive. His life then becomes a quest to find his sister whom he finds on his last days only to discover she has a daughter and a son and that they speak their native idiom. In the end nothing is lost and he can die peacefully knowing that the oppression of the residential school approach hasn’t been stronger than their Native roots.

How has your sound evolved from Seminole ? In my opinion, Seminole has a great melodic feel and features some of our best songs, while Ritual sounds more like the way we play live. We’re a much heavier sounding band than the regular melodic rock bands out there, so we simply went with what sounds natural and fits us the best when we’re on stage. Ritual reflects our live sound: heavy, raw, furious, but still melodic and with a great attention to epic choruses and anthemic melodies. Seminole , since it was written and recorded in the studio during the pandemic, couldn’t reflect that side of us.

Both Native Soul and Seminole were more my vision of the band because we almost never played live, just two shows, so we really couldn’t know what was our real nature with this lineup. As soon as Seminole came out we’ve been on tour with FM, Skid Row and played headlining shows and festivals, and after almost 30 shows we have discovered we’re not the typical AOR band, but we’re definitely a hard rock band. I really think we’re closer to early Rainbow than Survivor. And I have to specify that I absolutely love AOR, but Edge Of Forever is a different beast and we fit into a wider spectrum of what melodic rock can be.

How was the video shoot for “Where Are You”? Physically it was complicated and tiring. In the last two years I’ve been diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease which has put my health to risk and, even if it might not show, I see I’m not 100 percent healthy, something that I embrace and accept. Probably this situation has given more strength to my performance and depth into the way we want to communicate our message of resilience and perseverance.

How important are videos in the promotion process these days? I don’t know for the other bands, but for Edge Of Forever they are essential. It is the fastest way for us to translate our music and message to image. “Ritual Pt.1” has the story element while “Where Are You'” is more about the band performing in a great location. If you go back to all our videos from 2019 on, you can clearly see we always have a vision behind what we present to our fans and we always want to raise the bar and show the growth and evolution of who we are and what we want to bring to the world.

How much attention do you pay to reviews? Not as much as in the past. I’ve learned that once you release an album, your truth is what really matters. I know we always give our 100 percent and beyond for each album and our job is to make sure we deliver something special. Obviously if you read a review that understands and supports your work it’s all good, but a bad review can be something that puts your work into a different perspective and might make you grow on details you didn’t consider in the first place. I have to say that in the past I’ve grown a lot thanks to some reviewers that I knew I could trust.

What has been your most memorable Edge Of Forever live show? Zurbaran Rock Festival in Burgos this last summer. There were thousands of people and the energy we all had was incredible. Mike Tramp played after us and he simply said that was the best show of his life, and I have to say, it will be hard to forget an audience like that, singing your songs and supporting you that way. We posted a few videos but the one of the people singing along in a call and response with me was really incredible.

What are your upcoming show/tour plans? Because of my health we had to hold back for a few months. We’re playing at Orland Fest in Norway on October 28th and we’re planning a late winter and spring tour and we cannot wait to play these songs live!

With everybody in multiple bands, is it difficult to coordinate recording and touring? Recording is easy as we have our own studios so in the worst case we record our parts according to our schedules, but touring is always a puzzle even if we’re really prioritizing Edge Of Forever over most of our stuff because we want this band to really make it.

What are some of your non-musical interests and hobbies? I love nature and hiking and when my health is ok, I’m a marathoner, so unless I’m not forced in the house, anything that can bring me to the trail of in the wild nature is perfect for me.

What’s currently in your heavy musical rotation? The prog band U.K. Eddie Jobson is a hero and their trio lineup with Terry Bozzio and John Wetton is definitely my dream band.

Anything else you’d like to mention or promote? First of all I cannot thank you enough for the support to our band and our new album. We’ll be releasing the album on Frontiers Records on October 13th and on the same day the video for “Freeing My Will” will be out. It will show the heavier side of our sound and definitely change the game for us since it’s a double bass power hard rock song with a long instrumental section that really shows the virtuoso side of our playing. I hope to see you all on the road and we cannot wait to have this album out!

Jessi Colter Returns With First Single in Six Years, ‘Standing on the Edge of Forever’

  • By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

The First Lady of Outlaw Country has returned.

In an exclusive premiere with  Rolling Stone on Wednesday, Jessi Colter debuted her first new single in six years, “Standing on the Edge of Forever.” The song opens her new album , Edge of Forever , the next chapter of her storied career , out Oct. 27 on Appalachia Record Co.

The 10-track collection is the long-awaited follow up to 2017’s Lenny Kaye-produced The Psalms . “It was really sheer enjoyment for me to be able to do, because I really hadn’t planned anything much further,” said Colter in a statement. “ Edge of Forever is a love project.”

The LP promises to be a culmination of the legendary singer’s work and was produced by Nashville singer-songwriter Margo Price and mixed by Colter’s son Shooter Jennings .

When remembering Colter singing “Standing on the Edge of Forever” and “Angel in the Fire” from the upcoming project, Price said she was “blown away.” She added, “It was such refined writing, the work of someone who had been continuously, quietly honing her craft. I knew she had to make another album and told her I would love to be a part of that experience.”

“Standing on the Edge of Forever” brings back Colter’s keen sense for soul-shaking, psychedelic rock and sets the tone for the album as she sings of seeking new horizons. “It’s now or never,” Colter declares on the track. “I’m walking in the sunshine/Birds overhead they sing to me of things to be.”

Edge of Forever – Seminole (Album Review)

edge of forever tour

At the end of 2019 B.C. (Before Covid) we had the pleasure of sampling the landmark 1000 th album release from Frontiers Music , namely “ Native Soul ” from Italian melodic rockers Edge of Forever . As a whole, we were impressed . Frontman and keyboard/production wizard Alessandro Del Vecchio is perhaps the busiest and most versatile weapon in the Frontiers arsenal, working on the writing, performance, and production of countless other albums for other artists. With that in mind, you had best believe Alessandro does not pull any punches when it comes to his own flagship band. “ Native Soul ” was such a strong album, we seriously wondered if he was saving all his very best creative juices for that one album, near and dear to his heart as it was.

Today, in the brave new year of 2022, Ale and the boys are bringing us the fifth album under the band’s banner. Perhaps a reflection of Alessandro ’s affinity for the state of Florida, tied with the band’s theme of tribal life and history, the new album is entitled “Seminole,” after the Floridian tribe of the same name. For the previous album, “ Native Soul, ” the band had a lineup reorganization, and that strong lineup remains in place today. Also joining us are Aldo Lonobile on guitars, Nik Mazzucconi on bass, and Marco di Salvia on the drums. While all members possess impressive resumes, Aldo ’s guitar work with acts like Archon Angel and Secret Sphere have always been especially impressive to us.

Where the previous album opened with a very impressive layered vocal acapella arrangement, this album takes another approach and get straight to slamming with “Get Up On Your Feet Again.” The thundering drums and the riffing guitars pave the way for Alessandro ’s very accessible rock vocals. The frequent vibrato pinch harmonics from Aldo certainly don’t hurt, nor do his palm-muted arpeggio fills. In case we have not made it clear, Alessandro is a production wizard, and it is one of the first things to really stand out on the album. From the crisp full drums to the tangible woofing of the guitar cabinet resonance, this record has a very “in the studio with the band” feel, except actually better, since the masterful mic placement and mixing really makes this recording sound even better than the real thing. You hear the things you want to hear, and none of the things you don’t.

The second song, “ The Other Side of Pain ,” starts out with a tempo and keyboard atmosphere like something from Yngwie’s “Fire and Ice” album, with the addition of some mean “He-Man Woman Hater” style Nuno riffage we would never hear from the Swedish master of bottomless fury. Like the first track, this one has some great guitar leads, with the addition of keyboard parts to make Jens Johannson and Derek Sherinian blush. The third track makes the smart strategic decision to insert a more acoustically-oriented ballad opening to bring down the energy a little before getting heavy again, albeit at a more adagio tempo. The chorus structure is more relaxed, and yet retains full power and really lets Alessandro stretch the old vocal cords. The following track, “ Shift the Paradigm ” (no relation to the Liquid Tension Experiment) has a fresh, positive upbeat major key approach a little like what ended up being the final album from Airrace, or maybe a little like “ Dreams ” from Van Halen’ s “ 5150.” It is another well-placed track, in that it adds another axis to the usually linear nature of album design. Often albums try to alternate between fast and heavy, or slow and thoughtful, but the positive energy of “ Shift the Paradigm ” actually does what it recommends, and adds a new axis, where songs can also be evaluated based on upbeat positive major key energy versus darker, more brooding minor key metal. Speaking of which, the track is followed with “ Another Salvation ,” a slower, darker, more deliberate and gritty track. Although the lyrics seem to lean to the direction of inspiration and motivation, the song retains a feeling of one’s darkest hour.

“Seminole” Album Artwork

“ Breath of Life ” opens with Alessandro’ s piano and vocals, before electric instrumentation joins to make it a power ballad in the traditional Journey/Foreigner vein. The song wraps up with a guitar solo from Aldo which checks all the boxes for a good balladic lead, slow, thoughtful intro, building into a masterful display of technique and energy without becoming excessive. “ Wrong Dimension ” introduces elements of more traditional Eastern folk instrumentation (koto, shamisen, sitar?) to provide atmosphere for some of Alessandro ’s grand synth chords, before powerful guitars arrive to deliver riffs which fall someplace in between the dark magic of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow , and the phrygian notes metal guitarists like to jam while wearing pharaoh attire. Musically, aside from being heavy in only the best ways, the song does many interesting things, exploring tonal elements alluding to things like Gates of Babylon and the Sails of Charon. The final “regular” track, “ Our Battle Rages On, ” is an uptempo rocker based in alternating open note riffing and massive-sounding chords, woven with lead guitar melodies supporting the vocals from below.

The album closes out with a four-part titular odyssey, “ Seminole ” parts I through IV. Part I, “ In the Land of the Seminole ,” brings back the layered vocal harmonies we remember so well from the previous record. Set with clear, bell-like steel string acoustic guitars, and a tasteful hint of synth keyboards, the brief first track sets the stage well for the rest of the suite. The second part, “ Mistake Reality ,” is a melodic rock/metal track more in keeping with the vibes and thematic feel of the album. The track does sort of melt down in the last minute, and the band steps back a bit so Aldo can really let it rip, which is a nice treat for guitar fans. This sets the stage for the third part, “ Rewrite the Story ,” a tight and riff-laden battle with the plot elements of the suite, making references to battles, paradigms, and the rest of the character development found in the album’s story. The fourth and final part, “ The End’s Starting to Begin ,” leaves the listener with a soft, slow, steady drum beat which could very nearly be mistaken for human heartbeat. Perhaps intentionally. However, it is more approximation of traditional native American drum rhythm, which then supports Alessandro ’s vocal layers revisiting the “ Land of the Seminole ” verse from the first part. The lovely vocals continue for another couple minutes before yielding to a fading mouth whistling, which even makes a cute inference to Ennio Morricon e’s “Good/Bad/Ugly” theme.

Speaking of Sergio Leone, here’s the good and the less good, since there is no ugly to be had. The good is that this album sounds great. While a pure audiophile may reasonably consider the album to be a bit ultra-maximized, without as much dynamic headroom as some classic mixes, the reality is that contemporary album mixing is big and bold, and this album does it while remaining ear-pleasing. Alessandro Del Vecchio is one of the leading maestros of mix and production, and this album reflects that. In terms of musical chops and songwriting, everything is solid. Great playing from everyone involved, solid vocal performance, and there is not a bad song on the album. If we want to really nit-pick, and give you the less-than-good, we would say the album does not quite have the same fire in the belly we perceived in “ Native Soul .” Additionally, while we understand Ale was telling a story with this album, and trying to deliver a theme relevant to his experiences relative to the “Zeitgeist” of our times, the rise-up/triumph/overcome themes seem to have a virtual monopoly on the albums feel and lyrics. The record might have more feeling of rising and falling action if some songs are about moments of doubt or defeat, juxtaposed with songs of ecstasy and victory, rather than a collection of songs about “ I will triumph against all odd s.” Which is a great theme, of course, but it should not feel like the only theme. However, these are tiny critiques in the face of what is a very listenable melodic rock album. The album hits store shelves today, so check out our video clips here, and if you like what you hear, the rest of the album will not disappoint.

San Diego's Xander Schauffele reshapes legacy with major step at PGA Championship

I t's something to see when a monkey the size of a skyscraper-scaling Kong is shaken from straining shoulders. The exact moment when relief, joy, satisfaction and validation arrive at an intersection clogged with emotions shows how hard it all has been.

How elusive. How meaningful.

When San Diego treasure Xander Schauffele watched a putt take an extended tour of the cup's edge on No. 18 Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club to win the PGA Championship , very, very good became great.

Sewing up a major after capturing gold at the 2020 Olympics and winning seven other times on the PGA Tour is a separator between those in the conversation and those who create the conversation.

You've walked through a door. You've redirected and reshaped your legacy. You're changed, forever.

First major. San Diego exhaled. So did Schauffele.

"I kept telling myself, I need to earn this, I need to prove this to myself, and this is my time," Schauffele said after winning Sunday.

To be 30 with a CVS-sized receipt of successes and still have so much expected would cause most to wilt. You stack greatness upon greatness with Tour wins and Olympic glory, only to hear the conversation shift to the lack of even more greatness.

In a we-want-more society, golf wanted more out of Schauffele. It's had become the ultimate compliment and vote of confidence, but also biting and singularly unfair.

Lassoing a major is an arduous and unforgiving slog. Start with 156 players, all but one of the top 100 in the world, chasing the same thing that only one can achieve.

Stretch it across four days and 72 holes, where a single misfire or instant of drifting focus can seal fates.

Then pile the stress and expectations of being the next big thing who hasn't quite turned that corner, a 14-time runner-up with two of those in majors, and the heat grows.

Second in the 2018 British Open. Second in the 2019 Masters. Third in the 2019 U.S. Open. Third in the 2021 Masters.

So close. Right there. Running down a major, though, is not for wobbling will or weak knees.

"I just kept telling myself that, just weather the storm," Schauffele said Sunday.

Weather it? He was a deckhand in an ice storm with building-sized swells in the Bering Sea. His 21-under par became the new scoring gold standard in the history of the majors.

When Viktor Hovland charged, Schauffele hit the gas. When Collin Morikawa neared, he fought to maintain footing. When Schauffele bogeyed 10 Sunday, he followed with a pair of birdies to stem the momentary bleeding.

With his ball in the sand on 17, he pulled par from the flames. With his feet in the sand on 18, he dodged disaster for a trophy-cinching birdie.

This day continued to demand more, as majors routinely do. Schauffele had to truly and fully earn it. There would be no path to cruise to the finish. Skillfully and strategically attack. Measure risk, but do not become paralyzed by it.

It's all such maddening, thin-margin calculus.

Bryson DeChambeau, for one, ensured Schauffele could walk away from Valhalla knowing the moment had been seized. No charity. No fluke. Nothing but talent and grit.

When DeChambeau birdied 18 to go to 20-under, Schauffele was navigating his treacherous route down 17.

"I was able to capture that moment there, getting up-and-down on 17 was really big, and then that chip there on 18 was big for me, as well," he said. "I just kept telling myself I need to earn this, earn this and be in the moment, and I was able to do that."

First major. Major scoring record. Guaranteed spot with the U.S. at the Paris Olympics. Now, No. 2 in the world.

It all came together so deliciously, and finally, amid the bluegrass and bourbon for the former Scripps Ranch High School and San Diego State player. Being the answer to the trivia question about the best player not to win a major has gone the way of the dodo.

The sign more could be perched on a picturesque horizon came in the words Schauffele used at the finish.

"All of us are climbing this massive mountain," Schauffele explained. "At the top of the mountain is Scottie Scheffler. I won this today, but I'm still not that close to Scottie Scheffler in the big scheme of things.

"I got one good hook up there in the mountain up on that cliff, and I'm still climbing. I might have a beer up there on that side of the hill there and enjoy this, but it's not that hard to chase when someone is so far ahead of you."

That intersection of emotions has been cleared for fresh and flowing mental traffic, meaning Schauffele has stiff-armed away a nagging distraction for good.

It's on to the next.

A corner turned. A major corner.

"All those close calls for me, even last week (finishing second to Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship), that sort of feeling, it gets to you at some point," Schauffele said. "It just makes this even sweeter."

So long, Kong.
