7 Things You Need To Know Before Visiting The U.S. Virgin Islands

do you need passport to visit us virgin islands

  • Destinations
  • Mexico and Caribbean
  • Virgin Islands (U.S.)

I finally had the chance to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands. Why it took so long? I have no excuse. Although the U.S. Virgin Islands are a U.S. territory, there are a few things that surprised me that I never knew before visiting. When you visit, and you should, here are a few handy things to know before you arrive so you can enjoy your stay.

1. For U.S. Citizens, Passports Are Optional, But Highly Recommended

Being a U.S. territory means that U.S. citizens do not need a passport in order to travel to the islands. But I highly recommend you get a passport because it makes things so much easier. However, if you do not have one or do not want to get one, you can use your driver’s license as long as it is Real ID compliant.

You can read all about the TSA ID rules here .

2. Flights To The Islands Can Be Expensive

Here’s how to save.

Flights to the U.S. Virgin Islands are the most common way to get there, and the prices vary a lot. In order to get a good deal on a flight, you really need to look at all your options. The main airports in the United States that fly to Saint Thomas, Cyril E. King (STT) airport are American, Spirit, and Frontier Airlines through

In addition, you can get flights on Delta, Jet Blue, American, and United through

Flights to Saint Croix are a little more limited. Airlines American and Delta as well as airports in the United States servicing Saint Croix are

You can also easily reach the Virgin Islands from Puerto Rico, which is only about 115 miles away. There are flights as well as ferries. The Virgin Islands are also easily reached from other Caribbean countries.

Pro Tip: In order to find a good deal on a flight from the U.S., consider booking a flight to one of the main airports servicing the islands then getting round-trip tickets to your final USVI destination from there. A little planning can save you a lot.

Private safari taxi and our driver

3. Skip The Rental Car

Hire a private driver or try public transportation instead.

Once you arrive at the airport, you will need to take a taxi to your hotel. I did not see any hotel shuttles picking anyone up. You can rent a vehicle, but I would not advise it. First, vehicles drive on the left side of the road in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the vehicles have left-side driver’s seats. Second, the roads on Saint Thomas and Saint John are very narrow and the roads are very steep, both islands are not flat but very hilly with winding roads.

The roads on Saint Croix are more generous and wider, but it is still best to hire a car and driver. It just isn’t worth the trouble and hassle of navigating narrow roads in an unfamiliar setting when you can sit back and enjoy the views. You will pay for each passenger and each bag. The rates are set by the government, and although there are options based on the type of transport you take, the drivers really don’t have any leeway as to fares.

There are shared taxis, private taxis, usually an SUV or van, and VITRAN public transports (dollar ride buses) where the fares are cheaper, but unless you have the time to wait at a stop and want to go to a stop on the route, riding probably isn’t worth your time.

There are also options called safaris. These are open-sided covered pickups with bench seating, and you will see them all over the islands. They are used for private hires and tours of the islands that can get you to all the best tourist sites.

Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas

4. The U.S. Virgin Islands Has Over 50 Islands, Islets, And Cays

Here’s how to pick your island.

The total area of the U.S. Virgin Islands is about 130 square miles. The temperature averages between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and humidity varies with the seasons. The main islands are Saint Thomas, with the capital, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Croix, Saint John, and Water Island. Each has its own kind of vibe and although they’re close together, they’re very distinct.

Saint Thomas

Saint Thomas has the largest airport on the island, and the majority of flights arrive here. Saint Thomas is also a major port of call for cruise ships. During my visit, I witnessed two to three cruise ships per day arriving. In fact, Porthole Cruise and Travel named the USVI the readers’ choice award winner for 2022 Best Caribbean Cruise Destination.

August, September, and October are the slowest times of the year for cruise ships given that it’s hurricane season. The rest of the time, the island of Saint Thomas is busy with tourists visiting all the sites and taking safari tours around the island.

Saint Thomas has a lot of things to do, from shopping in high-end stores for jewelry to great dining experiences, fantastic mountain-top lookouts where you can see the islands, and many venues where you can just hang out, relax, and have a drink.

Paradise Point And Skyride

One such place is Paradise Point . There are three ways to get to the top: Walk (I don’t recommend it!), take a car (this is easiest), or book a ride on the Skyride. The Skyride sits next to the Pirate Museum near the cruise port in Charlotte Amalie. The ride costs under $30 for adults, is less for children 6 to 12, and kids under 6 ride free.

You will get a breathtaking view of Saint Thomas as you take the leisurely 7-minute ride to the top of Paradise Point. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by some of the best views on the island, a great bar and restaurant where the signature drink is the Baileys Bushwacker, souvenir shops, and the Skywalk. Paradise Point also has live music in the evenings.

Water Island

Water Island sits right off the shore of Saint Thomas and was in private hands until 1996 when it was transferred to the government. At a little over 490 acres, it is mostly an exclusive residential area but also has some great beaches and old military fortifications and is a great place for kayaking, hiking, cycling, or renting a golf cart for a tour.

Getting There: The best way to get there is a 10-minute ferry ride that costs about $15 round trip per person. Spending the day on Water Island might just make you want to sell your house and contemplate moving.

With the most beautiful views in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saint John is worth the visit. It is only 4 miles west of Tortola, one of the British Virgin Islands, and at times your cell phone might switch carriers. Saint John is 9 miles long and 3 miles wide and only 28 square miles in size with two-thirds of the island being a U.S. National Park.

Beaches And Virgin Islands National Park

With almost 40 beaches on the small island (it’s less than 20 square miles), visitors can find one that will suit their style. From small hideaway beaches to sprawling white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters, Saint John is a beach lover’s paradise.

In 1952, philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller was sailing the Caribbean and came upon Saint John. With no electricity, no roads, and no dock, he thought that Saint John was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Without ever setting foot on the island, he decided to purchase 5,000 acres of the 12,500-acre island and turned it over to the Federal government to create a national park .

One unique thing about the park is that it is completely open. There is no fee to enter the park and there is a lot of private land within it.

Cruz Bay And Mongoose Junction

Arriving at Cruz Bay in Saint John, you will see a small town with shops, restaurants, and bars all surrounded by high-end villas where some of the rich and famous vacation.

One great place to visit is Mongoose Junction, named after the many wild mongooses on the island. Mongoose Junction is a shopping center with breweries, tap rooms, gift shops, restaurants, and much more.

Getting There: To get to Saint John from Saint Thomas, take a taxi to the Red Hook area and take the ferry, which costs around $6 and takes about 20 minutes.

Saint Croix

Saint Croix is about 45 miles from Saint Thomas and is the largest of the islands, measuring about 22 miles long and 6 miles wide. It’s best known for its historic and cultural vibe.

Fort Christiansted on St Croix

Frederiksted And Christiansted

The two main towns on Saint Croix are Frederiksted and Christiansted, and both still show heavy influence from Danish times. Frederiksted, known as Freedom Town by the locals, is home to a deep water port and is a cruise line port of call.

The town is home to Fort Frederiksted , an 18th-century Danish fort and U.S. National Park Site and historic landmark. There are several old historic buildings to explore that showcase the early history of Saint Croix as well as great shopping, boutique and high-end hotels, and superb restaurants.

Christiansted is home to Fort Christiansvaern , part of a National Park Site that covers 7+ acres of historic buildings. The fort commands a majestic presence overlooking the bay and was used by the Danish to control the island.

Christiansted has better shopping while Frederiksted has a lot of different accommodations to choose from. The two towns have different vibes with Frederiksted being artsier and Christiansted being better for shopping and nightlife. While you are there, visit Salt River Bay and Altona Lagoon at night to see their spectacular bioluminescence waters.

Pro Tip: While you are on Saint Croix, get away from the main tourist area and meet the locals. They are welcoming and there is a lot to do, including

  • a delicious rotisserie chicken lunch at La Reine Chicken Shack , during which you might rub elbows with anyone from government ministers to laborers
  • a rum distillery tour
  • hitting up the local farmers market

Getting There: To get to Saint Croix from Saint Thomas, take a 45-minute puddle jumper flight or seaplane. You can also take the 2.5-hour ferry ride; just know the waters might be a little choppy.

5. Food And Drink: What To Expect

The U.S. Virgin Islands is a true melting pot of both people and food. People from all over the Caribbean have moved to the islands over the years and many people from the U.S. mainland have decided to make the move to the tropical paradise, too. With all the diversity, you have a wide selection of restaurants, both upscale and small local spots to choose from.

All of the islands have excellent restaurants, but don’t limit yourself to high-end establishments. While on the islands, check out some of the local spots to eat. On Saint John, I had a great time mingling with the locals at a place called Heading East Bar and Grill , a small place with outdoor seating and a bar where they served up some fantastic goat curry.

Pro Tip: As far as the drinking goes, the water is safe to drink and tap water or mineral water can be had almost everywhere.

Caribbean rum in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Rum In The USVI

The drink of choice in the U.S. Virgin Islands is, of course, rum. Rum has a long history in the Caribbean and the islands are home to Cruzan and Captain Morgan rums with several other bottlers and craft distilleries opening up.

One of the best ways to sample some excellent Caribbean rum is to head over to the Bajo el Sol Gallery, Art Bar & Rum Room on Saint John. The Art Bar is a combination gift shop, art studio, and rum room. All of the items are produced by USVI locals with everything from books from local authors, to jewelry, pottery, paintings, and more.

For me, the star of the show was the rum. They have over 200 high-end rums from all over the Caribbean and can tailor a sampling flight that will have you thinking a lot differently about rum. While you are there, make sure you try the fungi (pronounced foon-gee ), a polenta-like dumpling prepared from salted cornmeal mixed with shortening and water, and the Jonny cakes, deep-fried flour-based bread often stuffed with savory meats or cheese.

There are also some great beer options with Saint John Brewers on the island of Saint John as well as a tap room on Saint Thomas and a few others.

Pro Tip: While out and about in the local eating and drinking areas, you might come across someone offering you a drink called MamaWanna, also called Mama Juana in the Dominican Republic. It is a bright-red sweet, syrupy liqueur made from rum, red wine, honey, and medicinal fruits, herbs and spices. All I can say is be careful; they will sneak up on you.

6. Getting Home From The USVI

You don’t get to skip immigration, customs, or taxes just because the islands are a territory.

Okay, here is a weird thing about the USVI: When returning to the U.S. from the islands, you must go through U.S. Immigration and Customs. Even though the USVI is a U.S. territory, it is outside what is called the “Customs Territory.”

While you do not need a U.S. passport in order to travel to or from the USVI, even as a U.S. citizen, you are restricted in what you can bring back to the mainland. I smoke cigars and travel with an abundant stash. I was told I could have brought in as many as I want but could only take back 100 cigars. I don’t travel with that many, so it didn’t matter.

You are also allowed up to five cartons of cigarettes, four liters of alcohol, and $1,600 worth of duty-free goods such as clothing, jewelry, perfumes, cosmetics, et cetera. Anything more and you need to declare or face penalties.

One benefit of shopping in the USVI is that there are no sales taxes collected. The price you see on goods is the price you pay.

Pro Tip: Almost everywhere that sells alcohol has boxes that will hold up to four bottles, and the salespeople are more than happy to box it up and get it ready to pick in your checked baggage. Just ask them.

7. A Bit Of Island History

The u.s. virgin islands used to belong to denmark.

The islands were acquired between 1672 and 1773 by the Danish West India Company, becoming the Danish West Indies. During that time, they were used primarily for sugar cane growing and processing. In the mid-1800s, a slave revolt against the Danish caused the plantation system to collapse and the Danish started looking to sell the islands.

During WWI, the German government was looking to get a foothold in the region. As a preventative measure, the United States purchased the islands in 1917 for $25 million and established them as a territory. Today, all citizens of the U.S. Virgin Islands are U.S. Citizens.

Pirate Painting in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Real-Life Pirates Called The Islands Home

Between the late 1600s and early 1700s, the area now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands was a pirate haven. Ships sailing under British privateer license used the Saint Thomas Charlotte Amalie Harbor as a shelter and lookout when not raiding Spanish ships. Many notorious pirates, including Captain Kidd, Jean Hamlin, Stede Bonnet, Tempest Rogers, Bartholomew Sharp, Black Sam Bellamy, and others called the area home at one time or another.

Blackbeard’s Castle, now closed due to hurricane damage, was built in 1679 by the Danes and named Skystborg Tower. Built as a watchtower to overlook Fort Christian, it later gained the name Blackbeard’s Castle after the notorious Captain Edward Teach was rumored to use the area as a safe haven. There is a fantastic little museum and shop in Charlotte Amalie called the Pirates Treasure Museum that tells the tales of pirates and found treasures. You can even purchase actual treasure from the shop. It is well worth your time if you are interested in pirate lore.

So, what is the best island to visit in the USVI? All of them! Don’t limit yourself to just one island; check them all out and have the time of your life.

Do You Need a Passport for the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Planning a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands? Find out if U.S. citizens need a passport, required documents for entry, COVID-19 updates, and more.

Tobi Miles

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a hot spot for tourists all over the world. Known for its panoramic beauty and white sand beaches, it’s no wonder that over two million people visit per year. While most people are clear on their travel itinerary, they aren’t exactly sure on whether or not they need a passport.

For U.S. Citizens, a passport is NOT required to travel to the Virgin Islands. However, you will still need to present a government-issued I.D. and proof of US citizenship upon arrival. Valid forms of ID include a U.S. passport, driver’s license, or birth certificate. Non-citizens are required to present a valid passport and documents with their immigration status.

We will go over all of the necessary documentation for U.S. citizens, including minors, the Covid-19 restrictions and other required documentation for entry. That way, you’re best prepared for your trip, and can avoid any unwanted snags.

Do You Need A Passport to Travel to the Virgin Islands?

You do not need a passport to travel to the Virgin Islands as they are territory of the United States.  Citizens of the United States who come directly from a U.S. territory are not leaving the country. Therefore, they do not need to present a passport.

If you aren’t sure whether you’re in US territory, here are some other US territories:

  • American Samoa
  • Virgin Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • Swains Island
  • Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

On the other hand, if the tourist also visited non-US territories, they must show a passport.

Although U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport when departing from U.S. territories and traveling to the mainland, having proof of citizenship will assist CBP in expediting your customs processing.

All passengers, including U.S. citizens, flying between the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda must present a passport.   This is unless the flight is coming directly from any of the U.S. territories.

Other acceptable documentation includes the Merchant Mariner Document (presented by U.S. citizen merchant mariners traveling on official business) or the NEXUS Card. Children will need to bring their passports.

While a passport or other equivalent document is not required for land or sea entry, U.S. and Canadian citizens are strongly encouraged to bring proof of identification and citizenship. Travelers aged 19 and up should also bring a government-issued photo I.D.

Non-citizens visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands should adhere to the CDC's website guidelines. Passengers must exhibit a negative Covid-19 test result before actually boarding their plane, whether fully vaccinated or not.

To enter the United States, non-citizens must present a passport and follow  CDC protocols . This also applies to outlying territories such as the United States Virgin Islands. We go over the Covid-19-related restrictions and documentation in greater detail below.

  • Full vaccinated:  If you are flying from an international destination and are fully vaccinated, you should take a covid test within three days of your arrival.
  • Not fully vaccinated:  And if you're not fully vaccinated, folks have 24 hours to notify the USVI Travel Screening Portal.
  • Proof of vaccine or negative test:  Before you board, you must show proof of vaccination or a negative test result to your airline.
  • Travel by boat:  Anyone traveling by ferry or boat should take their test within five days of arrival and adhere to the same procedures.
  • Travelers aged 2 to 17 : Excluded from the CDC's vaccine requirements.

The United States Virgin Islands is an excellent place to vacation for many Americans, due to its rich history, thriving island culture, and a bustling tourist economy.

There are numerous cruises and resorts, and the lack of passport requirements makes the tropical paradise much more enticing to snowbirds and families.

But while you would not need a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, there are some complicated steps you must take to fly there and have a good time.

Documents You Need to Travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands (for U.S. Citizens)

All you need is the same documentation you would bring to the airport, such as a state photo I.D., driving license, or other government-issued I.D.

According to the  U.S. Department of Homeland Security , you should also get a hard copy of your birth certificate as well. This will come in handy as proof of citizenship if you decide not to bring your passport, or if you don’t have one.

Documents Required For Non-Citizens

To travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands from another country, you must have a valid I.D. as well as a valid passport.

If you are entering from the United States or Puerto Rico, no health certificates are required; citizens trying to enter from other nations should follow the laws as those for the mainland United States.

Documents Required For Non-Citizens

Do I Need a Real ID to Travel to the Virgin Islands?

Can I Drive in the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Americans with a valid U.S. driving license can drive in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and car rental services are available on all three main islands.

Visitors who choose to drive on the left must remember that using a phone while driving is illegal. Although American driver's licenses are accepted, all non-US tourists must obtain a short-term USVI driving permit upon entrance.

Can I Drive in the U.S. Virgin Islands

The USVI DMV website does not mention an international driver's license is required to rent a car. Car rental companies have all these short-term permits; some are more careless about enforcing them than others.

Driving regulations in the USVI are usually the same as in the U.S., except that the driving is done on the left side. It is worth noting that having a phone conversation while driving is illegal unless you are using a hands-free device.

Is Travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands Considered Domestic?

The American Virgin Islands – also known as the United States Virgin Islands – is a U.S. territory, like Puerto Rico.

Citizens of the Virgin Islands also are residents of the United States, and a trip to the Virgin Islands is regarded as a domestic trip for U.S. residents.

When visiting one of the United States insular properties, such as the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or Guam, you must clear Customs and Border Security.

Information from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Website

Q: Do U.S. citizens to/from U.S. territories need to present a passport to enter the United States?

A: No. These territories are a part of the United States. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the U.S. and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. If the traveler also visited non-U.S. territories, he/she is required to present a passport.

Although U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport when departing U.S. territories and traveling to the mainland, having evidence of citizenship (e.g., U.S. passport, birth certificate, Trusted Traveler Program card) or lawful permanent residence (e.g., green card) available will help CBP expedite your customs processing.

Additionally, although not required to present a passport, travelers departing the U.S. territories for the U.S. mainland are subject to customs and agriculture restrictions. Travelers are entitled to a $1,600 duty-free exemption, as long as they remained in the U.S. territories for 48 hours or longer. After the $1,600 duty-free exemption, travelers will be required to pay a flat rate of 1.5% on the next $1,000 worth of goods purchased.

CBP officers may also conduct baggage checks or ask additional questions as part of standard inspections of outbound passengers, to prevent any non-native species of plants, pests or plant diseases, which may be present in one of the islands from being introduced to the mainland. For example, a pre-departure examination is performed on all passengers and cargo moving from Hawaii to the mainland U.S. The purpose of this examination is to prevent movement of fruit flies and fruit fly host material. These rules also apply to Caribbean islands, including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. For more information on what agricultural goods can be brought from U.S. territories and Hawaii, please visit the USDA website.

( Important Change in International Land and Sea Travel Document Procedures )

While a passport or other comparable document is not required for entry by land or sea, U.S. and Canadian citizens are highly encouraged to carry proof of identity and citizenship. U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service - Customs

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service maintains an office in St. Croix and is happy to assist visitors by answering any immigration questions. Their telephone number: (340) 778-6559. At the airport, their number is (340) 778-1419. You can also call U.S. Customs at (340) 773-1490 if you have any questions. When you leave St. Croix by air, give yourself at least an hour and a half at the airport to go through customs and immigration checkpoints. At the airline counter you will be required to show photo identification for security purposes and check your bags.

Before passing through Customs you have the opportunity to shop in the airport's gift shop and/or get a bite to eat at the small local restaurant located in the lobby. This is your last chance to try some local food before you return home!

After visiting the airport lobby, proceed to Customs. Present your passport or other valid ID, to a Customs Inspector. You then collect your bags from the luggage carousel and pass through Immigration where you present your identification and airline tickets. Be prepared to have all your bags checked thoroughly, inside and out.

Once past Customs and the airport screening area there are new gates with comfortable chairs and a small snack bar which serves light snacks, soft drinks, beer and limited cocktails as well as a gift shop.

Citizens of any country other than the U.S.

Should follow U.S. travel regulations and requirements for entry into the USA.

Do you need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands? (+Island Overview)

Aerial view of the US Virgin Islands

Watching the snow fly outside your Wisconsin window in January causes one to wonder “do you need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands?” It seems logical that I would need a passport since I needed one when I visited Jamaica, but the US Virgin Islands have “US” in their name so maybe not. I decided to find out.

Do you need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands?  US Citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are a US territory so the same travel rules that apply to travel on the US mainland also apply to the islands.

Do you need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands?

Since the US Virgin Islands are a US territory, US citizens do not need a passport to visit.

Traveling to these islands is nearly identical to traveling anywhere else within the US. Whether you’re flying from a US city to another US city or US territory, you just need valid identification to board the airplane.

I don’t need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands, so what documents do I need?

US Citizens need a valid photo identification to travel to the US Virgin Islands. The most common form is a state-issued driver’s license or state-issued ID.

According to the TSA , below are valid forms of government-issued identification:

  • Driver’s licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
  • Passport Card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • DHS-designated enhanced driver’s license
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

Be sure that your ID is valid, meaning it’s not expired or doesn’t expire while traveling

What if I’m not a US Citizen?

If you’re not a US Citizen you DO need a valid passport, issued by your country of origin, to visit the islands.

Getting to the US Virgin Islands

You can either fly, take a cruise or a ferry to the US Virgin Islands.

Fly to the US Virgin Islands

There are 2 main airports on the islands: Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in Christiansted on the island of St. Croix and Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas.

Both airports accept international flights, flights from mainland US and service to other islands (island hopping).

Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix

Cruise to the US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands are a very popular port of call for cruise ships. The following islands currently have ports of call that cruise lines regularly visit:

Take a Ferry to and between the US Virgin Islands

You can travel from one US Virgin Island to another via ferry. The following passenger ferry routes are available:

  • St. Thomas to St. John
  • St. Croix to St. Thomas
  • St. Thomas to Water Island

You can also travel between the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. For this travel, you need a valid passport.

  • St. Thomas to Tortola
  • St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda
  • St. Thomas/St. John to Jost Van Dyke
  • St. Thomas/St. John to Anegada

What else should I be aware of when traveling to the US Virgin Islands?

Once you’re on the US Virgin Islands, you may decide to travel to another Caribbean Island. If traveling to another US territory like Puerto Rico or to the Florida Keys, you are golden – no passport is needed.

However, if you plan to visit one of the non-US islands, you will need a passport to gain entry to that island.  This is true regardless of how you travel to the non-US islands including by ferry,  cruise ship or small charter airplane.

For example, if you travel from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, you don’t need a passport. If you travel from St. Thomas to Jamaica, you do need a passport.

What is a US territory and how’s it different than a US state?

There are 14 US territories but only two located in the Caribbean – the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The US Virgin Islands are “unincorporated organized territory” which means the US constitution is only partially applied and the territory has been granted jurisdiction by the US Congress to govern its own affairs.

Anyone born in the US territories is a US citizen (with the exception of American Samoa).

Interesting fact: the citizens of the US Virgin Islands are not eligible to vote in the US presidential elections.

Why should you travel to the US Virgin Island?

  • Escape the northern climate
  • Partake in fun activities
  • Because it’s easy!

1. Escape the Northern Climate

The warm, tropical climate is enough to get me to the islands!  On average, temperatures range between 70-88 throughout the year with the hottest months being July & August and coolest month January.

Of course, you’ll want to plan your trip carefully especially if you want to avoid the rainy and/or hurricane seasons.

Rainiest month: November

The US Virgin Islands share the same official hurricane season as most islands in the Caribbean – June 1 – November 30

2. Partake in fun Activities

Being surrounded by the Caribbean sea, the islands are perfect for water activities including sailing, parasailing, windsurfing, kayaking, swimming, and a lot more.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are especially spectacular. You can expect to see octopus, seahorses, sea turtles, frogfish, and batfish. The islands boast over 60 dive sites to explore coral reefs, mangroves and even the remains of several sunken navy barges.

If water isn’t your thing, hike the national park trails or take a jeep off-road, zip-line or horseback ride.

If you’re like me, you appreciate the simpler more relaxing activities such as just beaching it or taking a catamaran cruise.

4. easy Travel

Since the US Virgin Islands are part of the US, travel is easy breezy! You don’t need a passport, which saves time and money if you don’t have one, and you can skip customs and all the other international hassle that goes with it.

Where else can I go in the Caribbean without a passport?

You can also visit Puerto Rico (another US territory in the Caribbean) without a passport

And of course, don’t forget the Florida Keys. I love the Florida Keys. It’s US mainland’s little Caribbean treasure. Super close, easy travel, and every bit Caribbean.

Although technically, I’m told the keys are not in the Caribbean, but I think they are. I can’t tell the difference. There are gorgeous beaches, fabulous weather and laid back island life so …. yay, they’re in the Caribbean!

Do You Need a Passport To Go to the Virgin Islands?

do you need passport to visit us virgin islands

Thanks to the fact that the U.S. Virgin Islands is a United States territory. So, preparing for any type of trip will not necessarily be as time-consuming as it would be with other destinations. As long as you’re a US citizen, you don’t need a passport to travel by air or sea to the United States Virgin Islands.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Do You Need a Passport To Go To the Virgin Islands?

As previously stated, United States citizens are not required to bring a passport when traveling to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, you will still need to bring photo identification, such as an official state driver’s license to fly. You will not be legally required to present your passport when entering the islands and will not be stopped by United States Customs officials at any point.

Non U.S. Citizens

If you are not a legal United States citizen and plan on flying to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you must provide a passport during your travels. You will need to provide this information at two distinct points – once when you enter the U.S. Virgin Islands and once when you return to the United States. Even if you already live in the United States, you must show your passport during your trip.

Benefits of Having a Passport

Even if you’re a US citizen, it might still be a good idea to bring along your passport . For example, your passport will always be accepted as identification on your trip. This can make it easier when you board your return flight home.

How to Obtain a Passport?

A passport requires you to apply at a passport facility nearest to your home. Many United States post offices will both accept and process your passport application.

You will need to bring the appropriate payment for fees, a color photo that matches all of the requirements (it must be a current headshot taken within the last six months and must be two inches by two inches in size), and other documents.

You will also have to provide a certain document that will serve as your “ Proof of Citizenship .” This will help to make sure that your passport is processed accurately.

If your trip is just around the corner and you don’t have time to wait three to six weeks for standard passport processing times, you may also choose to use a passport expedite service to help things move along much faster.

The documents and paperwork required to apply for a US Virgin Islands passport may seem overwhelming, but most applicants should find the process easy. As long as individuals arrive at their appointment with all documents in order and filled out correctly, they can expect to receive their passports within ten to thirteen weeks.

Where are the Virgin Islands?

The Virgin Islands are a grouping of Caribbean islands between Puerto Rico and Anguilla, on the eastern, Atlantic Ocean side of the Caribbean Sea.

A brief geography lesson: the Caribbean is split into two “island chains” or archipelagos: the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles.

As the names suggest, the Greater Antilles are larger islands and the Lesser Antilles are smaller islands.

The Virgin Islands are right at that spot where the Greater Antilles transition into the Lesser Antilles.

Geologically, the Virgin Islands belong with the Lesser Antilles .

How did the Virgin Islands become a US territory?

The US Virgin Islands are today three main islands, St Thomas, St John, and St Croix, and several small surrounding islands.

Their story is typical of the Caribbean.

The islands were originally inhabited by native Caribbean tribes . St John has ancient petroglyphs that date back to these peoples.

Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the islands in 1793, putting the islands on Europe’s map.

Columbus’ Landing Site is part of the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve on St Croix.

European empires fought over and traded the islands until they eventually landed in Danish hands in the late 1600’s.

Sugar cane plantations tended by hundreds of African slaves powered the economy for nearly two centuries.

Slavery was abolished in the mid-1800’s , followed shortly by devastation from several natural disasters, and the economy collapsed.

Denmark was never able to resuscitate the islands’ economy.

The United States became interested in purchasing the islands in the mid-late 1800’s. Treaties were negotiated but never approved.

Finally, in 1917 at the beginning of World War I, the US convinced Denmark to sell the islands.

The official name of the US territory became the Virgin Islands of the United States.

What language is spoken in the US Virgin Islands?

American English is the official language of the US Virgin Islands and is widely spoken.

Locals can also speak Haitian Creole and usually a bit of Spanish , if the occasion calls for it.

What nationality are people born in the US Virgin Islands?

As a territory of the United States, people born in the US Virgin Islands are considered United States citizens .

However, since the USVI are a territory and not a state, only certain portions of the US Constitution apply.

What’s the capital of the US Virgin Islands?

The capital city of the US Virgin Islands is Charlotte Amalie , located on the island of St Thomas.

Do I need a passport to visit the USVI?

United States citizens do not require a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands. A government issued photo ID is sufficient, such as your US driver’s license.

All other nationalities will require a passport.

However, if you plan to take a day trip over to the neighboring British Virgin Islands during your stay, Americans will need a passport to enter.

What currency does the US Virgin Islands use?

The US Dollar is standard in the USVI, and most places will not accept anything else.

ATMs are few and far between if you’re out walking about, but most resorts usually have a few on their premises.

What time zone is the US Virgin Islands in? Do they follow Daylight Savings Time?

All three US Virgin Islands are on Atlantic Standard Time (AST) . That corresponds to UTC/GMT-4.

They are an hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time used on the mainland United States’ east coast.

Daylight Savings Time is not observed in the USVI.

Do they take credit cards in the USVI?

Credit cards are accepted at the bigger resorts and restaurants , but some will charge a fee to take the credit card.

Many smaller vendors or local establishments accept cash only.

One workaround for this is to book tours/excursions online ahead of time. It’s still best to have some cash on hand.

Pro Tip : Taxis from the airport take cash only.

Safety and Cultural Norms

Are the US Virgin Islands Safe to Visit?

Yes, the US Virgin Islands are safe for tourists.

Common sense safety practices should be observed as you would at any other vacation destination, but we’ve never felt unsafe when galivanting around the islands.

Of course, there is always some amount of crime, no matter where you go in the world.

The most common incidents that impact tourists are breaking into cars to steal valuables or pickpockets in crowded settings like shopping areas or bars.

Watch your drinks at bars and resorts, and never walk alone at night. All common sense safety precautions.

Is it safe to drink the water in the USVI?

Yes, the tap water at resorts and hotels is safe for consumption. You can always ask the front desk, but if there’s an issue, they will let you know.

Fresh water can be scarce so most rental villas/homes collect rainwater into cisterns. Some have rigorous filtration systems; others don’t.

Your host may ask you to take shorter showers and drink bottled water instead to conserve the freshwater.

If you’re renting a home, be sure to ask.

Is it safe to take a taxi in the USVI?

Yes, taxis are generally safe to use in the USVI. Taxis are usually shared taxis in the Virgin Islands.

The St Thomas airport uses large, red, multi-passenger vans. St John taxis are exclusively safari-style trucks.

You likely will not be the only passenger in the vehicle, and it will likely make multiple stops before reaching your destination.

Agree to a fare with the driver before getting in the taxi.

Taxi stands are often available at popular beaches, in cities, and near ferries.

Alternatively, flag down a taxi you see coming by stepping to the road’s edge and holding your arm in the air.

Don’t step into the road, though; sometimes they’re full and will not stop.

Is it safe to drive in USVI? How are the roads?

Driving in the US Virgin Islands is mostly safe.

That’s not exactly reassuring, I know, but it’s better than saying “Driving in the US Virgin Islands is safe*.”

Let me explain the reasoning behind that asterisk/mediocre endorsement of driving in the USVI.

Driving in the USVI’s is very similar to driving in the US, and far better than the free-for-all traffic typical of Southeast Asia.

Pro Tip : Drive on the LEFT in the US Virgin Islands.

However, the quality of roads in the US Virgin Islands is just ok.

Each island has paved main streets in cities, residential areas, and to popular destinations.

St Croix even has a stretch of freeway to speed up travel between its two major cities.

These roads are usually in decent condition, with some potholes here and there.

The majority of roads outside of town, and sometimes even in town, are narrow, steep, and unmarked.

The mountainous terrain makes steep roads unavoidable, but the narrow width, often with no guardrail, is a bit unsettling the first few turns.

Pavement markings like shoulder lines and centerlines don’t exist outside of the cities.

You’ll find yourself sucking it in when you pass your first delivery truck on one of these roads, but you will get used to it.

Locals often get impatient and will pass slower drivers; never mind if it’s in a curve or not.

Some curves have mirrors to help see driveways or oncoming traffic, but those are less and less frequent as you get away from the cities.

Further out of town, paved roads disappear altogether.

The bigger tourist spots have paved roads, but some hikes and lesser-known hidden gems require a 4WD vehicle, or even an ATV .

Do we recommend driving in the USVI? Yes. Just take it slow and be careful.

Do Islanders expect a polite greeting?

Yes. It’s polite to begin any conversation with good morning, good afternoon, or good evening.

Even just walking up to a register at the store, this makes a world of difference.

Acknowledge the human being behind the counter with a smile and polite word. Small shop owners especially appreciate it!

Never fear, haters of small talk! Most locals will reciprocate with a good morning, etc. and leave you alone to browse.

This local custom may seem like just plain politeness to some of us, but it’s important enough to the Virgin Islanders that they put this reminder on every island’s tourist information map .

Be a polite citizen of the world. It’ll only take 2 seconds.

Is there a cultural dress code in the USVI?

Informally, yes. We hesitate to call it a dress code, which sounds strict.

There is no law against it that we’re aware of, but you will never see a local wearing just their swimsuit in town or at a restaurant .

This goes for men and women.

Throw on a dress or shirt and shorts before browsing the local shops or sitting down for lunch or dinner , even at a beachside restaurant.

Ladies, those see-through coverups that look so cute don’t count. Put on something opaque.

I haven’t seen anyone denied service because of this cultural faux pas, but I have seen a seating host or two mention it kindly.

You don’t have to agree with it, but please be respectful of local customs. Remember, you’re a visitor.

And it’s again important enough that this tidbit also shows up on island tourist maps and free publications.

A green cay sits in the aqua blue Caribbean waters off of St Croix's north shore

How many days do I need in the US Virgin Islands?

This depends if you’re trying to see all three in one trip, or taking it one island at a time. It comes down to what you want to get out of your trip.

Do you just want to step foot on each island, lay on a beach, and maybe see a museum or go for a hike, if you have time in between drinks?

Then sure, you can see all three islands in 4-5 days.

St Thomas and St John are only 30 minutes apart by ferry and could be “done” over a long weekend.

St Croix is further south and requires a short flight to reach the other two islands.

Keep that in mind if planning travel to all three islands in one trip; you’ll have to pay for a puddle jumper flight.

We recommend, and prefer, the slower approach: take a week per island.

This likely requires more than one trip, since most Americans don’t get more than 2 weeks of vacation per year, but it’s worth it.

Rushing around and between islands is not relaxing.

Staying in one place reduces time lost in transit between destinations and increases time spent sightseeing.

Which US Virgin Island is the best to visit?

All three of the US Virgin Islands can provide an amazing beach vacation with sunny days spent next to beautiful blue waters.

The real question here is what atmosphere are you looking for on your vacation?

Which island you choose can depend on several quantitative factors, like flight availability and cost, lodging preference, and shopping preference, to name a few.

But the biggest deciding factor between the three main islands is atmosphere, or vibe.

That intangible, qualitative measure can be the difference between having the time of your life or never wanting to return.

A lot of people ask is St Thomas or St Croix better, or is St John better than St Thomas. Those questions are useless unless you know what you want from vacation.

St Thomas is home to the capital city of Charlotte Amalie and has the most resorts and nightlife, very much a party vibe here or for those that live and breathe all-inclusives.

St John is the smallest island and two-thirds national park, with few resorts and no airport but spectacular beaches and a laid-back vibe.

St Croix is the middle child, further south than the other two but also the largest of the three, with its own airport and a mix of history, rum, and cruise ports.

What’s the weather like in the Virgin Islands?

These islands are still a few latitudes above the equator and west of the Prime Meridian, firmly located in the northern and western hemispheres in the tropical zone.

Their latitude is close enough to the equator to ensure year-round warm temperatures while unbearable summer temperatures are tempered by ocean breezes.

Temperatures don’t change much unless there’s a storm.

Average summer temperatures are 89°F (32°C) highs and 80°F (27°C) lows. Average winter temperatures are 83°F (28°C) highs and 74°F (23°C) lows.

Not much difference!

The US Virgin Islands are subject to hurricane season , which is officially June through November every year, with the most active period for storms being in August/September.

It’s purely luck of the draw how easy or bad of a hurricane season they’ll experience.

Some years they get nothing while in 2017 they were hit by two back-to-back category 5 hurricanes (the worst level).

We have been in the USVI’s when a tropical storm passed through and can testify to the islanders’ sense of community and safety.

All the locals you meet will ask if you have food and water set aside in your room, just in case.

If your vacation falls within hurricane season, most importantly in late summer/early fall, we recommend travel insurance in case a hurricane forces you to reschedule.

What’s the best time of year to visit the US Virgin Islands?

Late spring to early summer is an ideal time to visit the US Virgin Islands.

Temperatures are warm, it’s the driest time of year, and hurricane season doesn’t start until June.

Peak season is winter and typically more expensive.

Late summer/early fall is the middle of hurricane season; still an enjoyable island experience but get travel insurance in case a hurricane changes your plans.

Transportation

Blue water of St John, USVI with a white wake trail behind a single speed boat

Do the USVI have public transportation, like buses or trains? Is it reliable?

Public transportation is available but often unreliable. There are no trains , but each city has a bus system.

The buses are often not on schedule , so leave early or have a good back up plan if you need to catch a ferry or flight.

Conversely, the ferries are always on time with the exception of inclement weather when it would be unsafe to run.

Many locals use the ferries as well to commute to and from work.

Are the US Virgin Islands walkable?

Not really. There are no dedicated pedestrian paths, no sidewalks outside of the centers of town, and not even shoulders along the roadway.

In cities like Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas, Cruz Bay on St John, or Christiansted and Frederiksted on St Croix, it’s reasonable to get from a city hotel/resort to a restaurant on foot.

But if your resort is on the outskirts of town or further afield, you need a shuttle, taxi, or rental car to get around.

Do the US Virgin Islands have Uber or Lyft?

No. There are no Uber or Lyft programs currently operating in the US Virgin Islands.

The closest you’ll find to a rideshare program are the shared taxis.

Which side of the road do they drive on in the US Virgin Islands?

All three US Virgin Islands drive on the left side of the road.

If you come across a roundabout, that means they work clockwise instead of counterclockwise.

Many American tourists don’t expect this, since the USVI are now an American territory, but it makes sense.

Like much of the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands still retain traces of British Empire influence.

What baffles British tourists is the cars.

While the US Virgin Islands drive on the left, the cars are all American imports with drivers on the left side of the car .

That’s backwards for UK drivers, who are used to driving on the left but having the driver on the right side of the car!

So, everyone has something to get used to when visiting and driving in the US Virgin Islands! 😆

Do you need a car in the USVI?

If you want to see the hidden gems, the beaches further away from the tourist centers, or any of the hikes or historical sites, you need a car.

We recommend getting a rental car to properly explore the USVI.

Driving may be awkward or scary at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of driving on the left.

The narrow and steep roads are just like driving in the mountains back home. Take your time, and you’ll be fine.

Don’t let impatient locals rush you. Let them go around.

It’s possible to visit the USVI without a car , but only if you’re content staying at your resort except for tours that pick up directly from your resort.

Do you need an international driver’s license to drive in the USVI?

American drivers’ licenses are accepted , but all non-US tourists will need to get a temporary USVI driving permit upon arrival.

There is no mention on the USVI DMV website that an international driver’s license is required to rent a car.

The rental car companies have these temporary permits, but some are more lax than others about officially enforcing it.

Driving rules in the USVI are generally the same as in the United States, of course, with the exception that driving is flipped to the left side.

Note that talking on the phone while driving is illegal unless using a hands-free device.

Can I take my rental car from St Thomas to St John?

Yes, but this usually only makes sense if you’re staying on St Thomas but want to day trip to St John.

Getting to St John from St Thomas is simple.

Catch the vehicle ferry from Red Hook, St Thomas to Enighed Pond, St John, just south of Cruz Bay.

Roundtrip vehicle ferry tickets cost about $50, and they stay on schedule.

If you’re staying on St John, rent a car on St John instead of from the St Thomas airport, and save yourself the hassle and logistics.

Miscellaneous Facts

Do you have to go through customs when returning to the us from the us virgin islands.

Yes. You are allowed a $1,600 duty-free exemption if you were away for more than 48 hours.

Pro Tip : Airlines on St Croix allow up to 6 bottles of alcohol to fly home for FREE as its own piece of checked luggage. Both Cruzan and Captain Morgan have rum distilleries on St Croix, and many people stock up on hard-to-find flavors while visiting.

Do you tip in the US Virgin Islands?

Yes, tipping culture in the USVI is the same as the United States. Generally, tip 15-20% in restaurants and taxis.

Resort employees may or may not accept tips, depending on resort policy.

Can I use my cell phone in the USVI?

Sure. Whether or not you get hit with a roaming fee depends on your carrier.

Signal is typically fine in the cities and spotty or non-existent the further away you get.

Also, beware of using your cell on the north side of St John and your phone accidentally connects to a cell tower on nearby Tortola instead.

Tortola is part of the British Virgin Islands and will certainly incur a roaming fee!

What’s the drinking age in the US Virgin Islands?

The legal drinking age in the USVI is 18 years old.

Now you’re prepared for your first trip visiting the US Virgin Islands!

Do You Need a Passport To Go to the US Virgin Islands?

posted by James Brockbank on November 26, 2021 // last updated on May 6, 2022

The U.S. Virgin Islands is an outlying Territory of the United States. American citizens, therefore, do not need a passport to vacation or travel there. The United States purchased the territory in January 1917 but didn’t take possession until March 31, 1917.

Like going from New York to California, U.S. citizens do not need to show their identification at every state border. This also applies to the U.S. Virgin Islands and other outlying territories like Puerto Rico or Guam.

However, you will need some essential documents if you are a U.S. citizen flying on an airplane from any of the 50 states to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Unlike trains or buses, airlines, the TSA, and Homeland Security require identification when traveling domestically.

The U.S. Virgin Islands may not require a passport, but you will need to show some sort of photo I.D. when you board your flight. You will also need a photo I.D. to return to the U.S. mainland. On top of this, the Covid-19 pandemic has also added a layer of complication .

We will cover all the necessary documentation for United States citizens, including minors, the Covid-19 related restrictions and paperwork, and a bit of history to acquaint you with the U.S. Virgin Islands better.

Documentation for Non-Citizens

Documentation Required For US Citizens

As you’ve already seen, the U.S. Virgin Islands do not require U.S. citizens to hold a passport to vacation or travel the tropical paradise. However, you have to take some basic documents and steps to fly domestically in the United States.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a lot like U.S. states in the sense that you can use the U.S. dollar and travel there with a simple photo I.D. However, we should be clear about what documentation is required for flights.

You will need some specific documentation to book and board the flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands. We will talk about these additional steps required due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.

Booking a flight within the United States and the U.S. territories requires an adult with a debit card, credit card, or bank account associated with online services like PayPal. Photo identification is not required to book the flight itself but is required in subsequent steps.

During the security and boarding process, you will need your boarding pass. This can either be digital or printed at a kiosk, or some airlines allow teens to travel unaccompanied. The procedures vary between airlines, but the youngest unaccompanied traveler is 12 or older.

Non-citizens traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands need to follow the CDC guidelines outlined on their website. Whether you are fully vaccinated or not at all, passengers must show a negative Covid-19 test result before boarding their plane.

Non-Citizens are required to show a passport and follow CDC protocols to enter the United States. This also applies to the outlying territories like the U.S. Virgin Islands. Below we talk in more detail about the Covid-19-related restrictions and documentation.

do you need passport to visit us virgin islands

During the pandemic, islands like Puerto Rico, Guam, and The U.S. Virgin Islands adopted strict travel policies. It has loosened in 2021, but some protocols need to be followed.

Those entering the U.S. Virgin Islands from the United States or U.S. territories age 5 or older and all international travelers age 2 or older must use the USVI Travel Screening Portal and get cleared for travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Those coming from the U.S. must submit a negative Covid-19 test result within 5 days of travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. International travelers must submit the same, but test requirements depend on vaccination status, citizenship, mode of travel, and age.

If traveling from an international destination by air and fully vaccinated, you must take the test within 3 days of travel. If you are not fully vaccinated, you have 24 hours to submit the negative result to the USVI Travel Screening Portal. You must provide proof of vaccination to your airline or the negative test before you board.

Traveling by ferry or boat must take their test within 5 days of travel and follow the same protocols. Travelers between the ages of 2-17 are exempt from the CDC vaccine requirements.

The U.S. Virgin Islands has a vibrant culture, first inhabited by the Ciboney and Arawak tribes as early as 1000 BCE. Christopher Columbus was the first European to see the islands and the Spanish later settled the islands. This fighting and European diseases wiped out much of the native populations .

The English and French set up shop on St. Croix almost a century later, and afterward, a complex dispute between the nations and the Netherlands erupted. The Danish-Norweigan kingdom also took interest and settled on St. Thomas and St. John in the late seventeenth century.

Ideal for sugar plantations, the islands became slave economies during the 18th and 19th centuries, but also a sizable Jewish community began to settle on the islands. The Virgin Islands were also the center of slave rebellions, and after a labor riot in 1878, the plantations were no longer profitable.

It wasn’t until the height of WWI that the Danes decided to sell the islands to the U.S. for $25 million. The acquisition took a while, but the fear of the German Navy and the disintegration of monarchy in Europe helped establish the newly named U.S. Virgin Islands. The treaty was signed, and the official ratification was January 17, 1917

With a rich history , vibrant island culture, and a healthy tourist economy, the U.S. Virgin Islands is an ideal vacation destination for many Americans. Cruises and resorts abound, and with no passport requirements, it makes the tropical paradise even more appealing to snowbirds and families.

Though you do not need a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, there are some intricate steps you must take to fly there and enjoy your experience. It is always smart to prepare, but it is even better to understand not only the history and culture but the steps that keep the citizens of this tropical paradise safe.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are famed as "America’s Paradise," and you will feel transported to a state of bliss from the moment you land at Cyril E. King International Airport and sip on a Painkiller at the Arrivals gate. While you may not need a passport, there are still other travel elements to consider when planning your visit to the U.S.V.I. —such as how to navigate between each island, when to book your flight, and how best to maximize your vacation budget while there. From logistical information about planning your trip to inter-island transit recommendations—and, of course, where to eat and drink—read on for your ultimate guide to traveling in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is between the months of mid-April and July—after the prices have dropped after the peak tourist season in the winter, and before the rains begin to fall more regularly in mid-summer with the arrival of the wet season. For more information on the islands’ weather, read our full-length article on hurricanes in the U.S. Virgin Islands .
  • Language: English. French Creole and Spanish are also commonly spoken on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix.
  • Currency: U.S. Dollar
  • Getting Around: There are no ride-share apps like Uber or Lyft available on the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, or St. John, but taxis abound on the island (especially in the tourist areas). There is also public transportation via buses and ferries between the islands provided by the VITRAN . Rental cars are also available on all three islands (and many companies are located at the Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas).
  • Travel Tip: The public bus service has limited scheduling later at night, however, and is known to be slightly unreliable in the evenings; so, travelers should plan to get around by taxi in the evening. Hotels can also arrange for drop-offs and pick-ups for guests dining out on the town.

Things to Do

The Virgin Islands are famous for sailing , thanks to both the archipelago’s ideal conditions (the ever-reliable trade winds), as well as the island chain’s mountainous tropical beauty (best observed aboard the bow of a boat, cocktail in hand). While we advocate a sunset sail, you could also opt for a day trip to one of the smaller islets in the U.S.V.I. or venture out to Water Island. Considered the fourth major island in the U.S.V.I., Water Island doesn’t offer much in tourism, as of yet—though it is a worthwhile option for a day trip from St. Thomas. Read below for more ideas on how best to spend your days in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Snorkeling, just like island-hopping above, is a must-do when visiting the U.S.V.I. We suggest swimming in the crystal-clear, tranquil waters off the coast of Waterlemon Cay , Buck Island Reef National Monument , or Jack’s and Isaac’s Bay beaches . But, luckily for travelers everywhere, there’s no bad place to go snorkeling off the coast of St. John, St. Thomas, or St. Croix—encountering rough conditions or murky visibility is quite rare. (Decidedly less rare? Seahorses, starfish, and sea turtles.)
  • Spend a day exploring Virgin Islands National Park , a natural preserve that accounts for over 60 percent of the landmass on the island of St. John. The breathtakingly unspoiled National Park is among the very best in the West Indies—alongside Arikok National Park in Aruba, of course. Visit the gorgeous beaches of Trunk Bay and Cruz Bay.
  • Explore the mountainous terrain with hikes leading travelers up to spectacular views of the surrounding islands (as well as the B.V.I.s and Puerto Rico, too, on a clear day). Some of our favorites include Ram Head Trail, the two-mile Bordeaux Mountain Trail , and Reef Bay Walking Trail in Virgin Islands National Park.

What to Eat and Drink

The U.S. Virgin Islands is quickly attaining world-renown as a foodie destination—thanks, in no small part, to the culinary revolution taking place on the island of St. Croix. For a delectable taste of the local flavors, visit the legendary kitchens of favored St. Croix establishments, such as Savant , balter , Zion Modern Kitchen , and Rumrunners . Though each restaurant cultivates its own distinct palette and ambiance, they all reflect modern-day Crucian cuisine's innovation and excellence.

Head to Pie Whole Pizza in St. Thomas for some excellent pizza (the restaurant received a 2018 TripSavvy Editors’ Choice Award for best pizza restaurant) and even more excellent beer. From Trappist ales to Imperial Stouts, this place is a beer lover's paradise. But, if you’re more of a wine-lover than a beer-drinker, fear not: The eclectic wine menu at The Terrace in St. John is more than enough reason to extend your late-night dinner even later into the evening to enjoy some after-dinner refreshments. (The Terrace’s acclaimed wine menu has been recognized with a Wine Spectator Award). Plus, the restaurant’s romantic atmosphere overlooking Cruz Bay is more than enough reason to stay awhile. (Or at least another round). And, speaking of another round, the diversity of options on the extensive wine menu at Bella Blu in Frenchtown is more than deserving of a second look (or a third). Cheers!

Where to Stay

The first decision to make when deciding where to stay in the U.S. Virgin Islands is to choose which island is the right fit for your vacation desires. The U.S.V.I. is composed of three main islands, each of which is known for its unique allure: St. Croix (the culinary scene), St. John (pristine nature), and St. Thomas (exciting nightlife). In St. Croix, we recommend checking in at the Pink Fancy Hotel in Christiansted. The legendary Caribbean inn boasts a unique charm and is in the perfect location for travelers to check out St. Croix’s famous restaurants and cafes. If you’re opting for a vacation in St. Thomas—and looking for luxury and relaxation—then look no further than the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas (and book yourself a spa day). Finally, for total immersion in nature and the accompanying tropical bliss, rent one of the many spectacular villas available for weekenders in St. John.

Getting There

Though there are two international airports located in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) in St. Thomas offers the most options for international flights. It is also one of the busiest hubs in the Eastern Caribbean. Located just east of the island’s capital, Charlotte Amalie, STT offers direct flights for U.S. travelers arriving from eight cities in the U.S.: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dulles, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Newark, and New York. Additionally, there is another international airport in St. Croix, the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, a smaller operation that offers direct flights to Atlanta, Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and New York, for U.S. travelers.

  • Cyril E. King International Airport: The largest international airport in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) is located on the southwest coast of St. Thomas and offers direct flights from the U.S. via American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, and United.
  • Henry E Rohlsen Airport: Located on the island of St. Croix, six miles southwest of Christiansted, the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (HERA) offers direct flights from the U.S. via domestic carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, and Spirit.

Explore our full-length guide on planning your arrival in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as further information on island-hopping by boat and by plane within the archipelago once you’ve arrived.

U.S. Virgin Islands Culture and History

The U.S. Virgin Islands celebrates its unique culture and history with a plethora of festivals and events held annually on the islands of St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. Of all these festivities, however, none compare to the spectacle and exuberance of Carnival. Though Carnival was celebrated as early as 1912, it became an annual event in 1952. Expect dancing, amazing food, and spectacular costumes. Carnival begins in St. Thomas in April, St. John in late June, and St. Croix from December through January. There is a myriad of festivals and activities on St. Croix in conjunction with the holiday season: The Crucian Christmas Festival kicks off on the first Saturday in December and features parties until the first Saturday of the New Year. Events include the annual St. Croix Boat Parade , as well as New Year’s Eve fireworks. The biggest Christmas event in St. Thomas is the Miracle on Main Street , which features carolers, local crafts and artwork, and steel pan Christmas cheer.

Explore our articles on the history of Carnival in the Caribbean, as well as a comprehensive list of Carnival celebration dates by island.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Visit in the off-season. Despite what residents of northern climes might think, the summertime in the U.S. Virgin Islands actually isn’t too swelteringly hot—thanks to trade winds, the islands enjoy temperatures in the 70s to 80s throughout the year. Additionally, fall in the U.S. Virgin Islands offers remarkable deals on airfare and luxuriously crowd-free beaches and restaurants.
  • Whenever you travel to the Caribbean, you should consult our monthly event calendar , as well as our scheduling guide to Carnival on each island to see if your visit overlaps with any of the festivities. These annual street parades and live music are available to all guests and locals, free of charge.
  • Check to see if the service fee is included in your hotel or restaurant bill; otherwise, similar to the U.S., a 15 to 20 percent tip is customary.
  • Consider booking an all-inclusive resort to minimize the cost of food and drink during your Virgin Islands vacation for larger groups—and consult our guide on exploring the U.S. Virgin Islands on a budget.

Just a quick ferry ride from St. Thomas sits St. John – an island that's mostly comprised of the lush Virgin Islands National Park. Explore the isle's secluded beaches, take a snorkeling lesson in one of the area's crystal clear bays or take one of the famous hikes around the island.

Guests seeking luxury should check out the Westin St. John Resort & Villas for a special treat, while everyday travelers can rent a vacation condo or stay at a luxury hotel like the Caneel Bay Resort, which sits on the southern part of the island.

If you're a US citizen, you can travel to US territories and Freely Associated States with just your passport. This includes the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. However, some of these destinations, like American Samoa, also require a government-issued ID or a certified US birth certificate. Keep in mind that each country has different entry requirements, so it's important to check the specific requirements for your destination before travelling.

If you're a US citizen, you can travel to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) without needing a passport. This is because the CNMI is a US territory. However, if you're a non-US citizen, you will need to have permission to work legally in the US and in the CNMI.

The CNMI is an archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean, just northeast of Guam. It has been a self-governing commonwealth in political union with the US since November 4, 1986. The CNMI consists of 14 islands, including Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.

US citizens can travel to the CNMI with just a photo ID and a birth certificate. However, it's important to choose a flight path that doesn't have layovers in countries where passports are required, such as Japan. Instead, travellers should fly through Honolulu and Guam.

The CNMI offers tropical landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and white sand beaches. It's a great spot for Americans seeking a tropical vacation without needing a passport.

As of June 2024, a US passport allows visa-free travel to 189 countries and territories, ranking it as the seventh most powerful in the world in terms of travel freedom. However, there are exceptions to the need for a passport for US citizens travelling to certain US territories and Freely Associated States.

US citizens do not need a passport to travel between the US and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. However, a passport or certified US birth certificate is required to enter American Samoa.

US citizens do need a passport to travel to the following Freely Associated States:

The Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is made up of over 600 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, just northeast of Guam and Papua New Guinea. The islands are known for their lush greenery, white sand beaches, and marine life. As a Freely Associated State, US citizens need a passport to enter. However, if connecting through Honolulu, a government-issued ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, are sufficient.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands

Like the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands is a collection of atolls and islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is known for its beaches, coral reefs, and marine life. As a Freely Associated State, US citizens require a passport to enter.

The Republic of Palau

The Republic of Palau is an island country in the western Pacific Ocean, consisting of over 500 islands. It is known for its beaches, rock islands, and diverse marine life. As a Freely Associated State, US citizens need a passport to enter.

If you're a US citizen, you can travel to American Samoa without a passport—you just need a Real ID and an onward or return ticket. This is because American Samoa has been a US territory since 1900. However, you will need a valid US passport or certified US birth certificate to enter the island.

American Samoa is made up of five islands in the South Pacific, located roughly 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. The islands are rimmed by white sand beaches and reefs teeming with marine life. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy nature, with lush greenery and a blend of Polynesian and American influences. Fewer than 23,000 visitors travel to American Samoa each year, so it's an excellent choice for those seeking a more secluded getaway.

In addition to your passport or birth certificate, there are a few other entry requirements to keep in mind. You must have a ticket for onward passage out of American Samoa or proof of employment in American Samoa. These requirements apply to both US citizens and aliens. Once you're in American Samoa, you can stay for up to 30 days, and with the approval of the Attorney General of American Samoa, you can extend your stay by another 30 days.

It's worth noting that road conditions and road safety are poor throughout the territory, and vehicle safety regulations are not regularly enforced. If you plan to drive in American Samoa, be sure to observe the speed limits and avoid driving at night outside of the main cities.

Exploring Northern Ireland: Can You Travel with an Irish Visa?

If you're a US citizen, you can take advantage of the convenience of a closed-loop cruise—no passport is required! A closed-loop cruise is one that departs and ends in the same US port. These cruises must meet certain criteria to qualify as closed-loop cruises. Every voyage on a ship that is not US-flagged, departing from and returning to a US port, must visit at least one foreign port of call according to maritime law. To qualify as a closed-loop cruise, the places included in the itinerary must be contiguous territories of the US, including Mexico, Canada, and several islands in the Caribbean.

Now, let's focus on the British Virgin Islands (BVI):

The British Virgin Islands are a group of islands located just west of the US Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles. They are known for their shimmering beaches, mountainsides covered in oleander and hibiscus, and quaint towns tucked along coves. The largest island, Tortola, is an early home to Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, and it maintains its salty pirate legacy and rum-making traditions. BVI has a rich blend of Caribbean, West Indian, and British-inspired flavours, with delicacies like fresh Anegada lobster, conch fritters, and Johnnycakes (cornmeal flatbread).

There are many things to do in the British Virgin Islands. You can snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, take a walk on the white sandy beaches, read your favourite book on a deserted island, or hike to the top of the volcanic mountain, Mt. Sage. You can also explore the tucked-away alcoves of Virgin Gorda, go shopping in the duty-free mecca of St. Thomas, or relish the rugged scenery and intriguing folklore of Jost Van Dyke, the smallest island in the BVI.

If you're looking for a small ship cruise to the British Virgin Islands, Adventure Life offers an 8-day cruise called "A Colorful Caribbean Time-Out" that sails from San Juan to explore the historic charm of Old San Juan. You can wander the streets lined with colourful facades and salsa-filled cafes, and discover UNESCO-listed sites. This cruise costs $7,500.

Another option is the 15-day "Enjoy Caribbean Rhythms at the Turn of the Year" cruise, also offered by Adventure Life. This cruise sails from Philipsburg to explore the best of the Caribbean, including the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Antigua, and Barbuda. This cruise costs $11,595.

Paying for Travel: The Interview Dilemma

U.S. citizens must carry a valid U.S. passport when travelling to Canada. Canadian permanent residents can travel with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport.

As of April 26, 2022, lawful permanent residents of the United States must show the following documents for all methods of travel to Canada:

  • A valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent acceptable travel document)
  • A valid green card (or equivalent proof of status in the United States)

If you are driving to Canada, you will need to present your passport and proof of your vehicle's registration.

U.S. citizens must present a valid U.S. passport book or card, and an entry permit issued by Instituto Nacional de Migración when travelling to Mexico.

U.S. citizens living in Mexico can apply for a passport at the U.S. embassy or nearest consulate.

U.S. citizens must also obtain a temporary vehicle import permit if driving beyond the Mexican border zone. This can be done online, at the Mexican border, or at certain Mexican consulates in the United States.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel to and from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory. However, a passport or certified U.S. birth certificate is required to enter American Samoa.

Do you need a passport to go to Puerto Rico? What to know before your trip

D o you need a passport to go to Puerto Rico? Planning a trip to Puerto Rico often raises questions about travel documentation. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, Puerto Rico enjoys a unique status that affects the travel requirements needed to enter the area. So, do you need a passport for Puerto Rico? Let’s dive into the details to provide clarity on this matter.

Do you need a passport to go to Puerto Rico? The bottom line

No, you do not need a passport to go to Puerto Rico as a United States citizen. Puerto Rico is part of a group of U.S. territories that does not require travelers to present a passport at the border. However, if you are not a United States citizen, different entry requirements may apply, and it is always a good idea to double-check the details of your specific situation.

Can I travel to Puerto Rico with just my driver’s license?

The short answer is yes. U.S. citizens can travel to Puerto Rico using only a government-issued photo ID , such as a driver’s license or state ID card. However, starting on May 7, 2025, if you do not have a passport, you will need a REAL ID to fly domestically in the United States , which includes the territory of Puerto Rico. Without the ID, you can still use a passport.

What documents do I need to go to Puerto Rico?

As long as you are a U.S. citizen, a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, suffices for travel to Puerto Rico. However, make sure you double-check your ID’s expiration date before your trip to ensure that it remains valid throughout your stay in Puerto Rico.

What islands can you go to with just a passport?

While Puerto Rico may not require a passport, other destinations in the Caribbean do. So, if you plan on traveling to multiple different destinations, make sure you research entry requirements for other islands in the region.

Many Caribbean nations and territories, such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport upon entry. However, other U.S. territories like American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not require travelers to hold a valid passport.

Is Puerto Rico a domestic flight?

Yes, flying to Puerto Rico from the mainland United States is considered a domestic flight. Since Puerto Rico is a part of the United States, flights are treated similarly to domestic flights within the contiguous U.S. This means that you will undergo security screening but won’t encounter customs and immigration procedures when arriving in Puerto Rico.

Book your trip to Puerto Rico today

Traveling to Puerto Rico is quite straightforward when it comes to documentation. A valid government-issued ID is all you need to explore this exciting Caribbean destination. However, it is never a bad idea to bring along a backup form of identification , and a passport is a perfect choice!
