This year, the outstanding service and amenities at Nemacolin resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, springboarded the property from the No. 4 to the No. 2 spot. One World's Best Awards voter recounted how the team at the resort pulled out all the stops for a wedding anniversary, saying "the evening exceeded every expectation." That same respondent said that "Nemacolin is our home away from home."

Another repeat winner in the mid-Atlantic was the elegant Inn at Perry Cabin , set along the Miles River. T+L readers described the hotel as "romantic" and "one of a kind," with one praising it for being both family-friendly and a perfect couple's retreat. "I love the luxury feel but also that we can bring our family. In 2019, we went for our 'mini moon' for a week, and it was amazing," said another Inn at Perry Cabin fan.

The WBA newcomer this year is River House at Odette's (No 3.) in New Hope, Pennsylvania, which opened in 2020 amid the pandemic. Named after French American actress Odette Myrtil, the hotel has already won over travelers with its opulent interiors and atmospheric, Old World-chic piano lounge.

Sumner Tunnel restoration: Getting to and from Logan Airport

Where is the sumner tunnel.

The Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South, situated between East Boston and the North End, takes drivers from Logan Airport to I-93/ Boston and points north.

How is my travel affected?

Sumner Tunnel closures affect travelers coming from Logan Airport/East Boston to Boston and points north.

If traveling to Logan Airport/ East Boston, continue using the Callahan Tunnel or the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Add additional travel time to both trips in case of congestion. If you are traveling from the airport, expect delays.

Traveling to Logan Airport and East Boston:

Roadways leading to Logan Airport and East Boston are open and available for travel during the Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South closures. Drivers should follow their normal route:

• From points North: Take I-93 South to Route 1A North/Callahan Tunnel or take US-1 South
• From Maine/ Portsmouth, NH/ Newburyport, MA: Take I-95 to Route 1 south, and then take Route 60 to Route 16
• From points South: Take I-93 North to Route 1A North/ Callahan Tunnel, or take I-90 East/Ted Williams Tunnel
• From points West: Take I-90 East and use the Ted Williams Tunnel

Travelers traveling towards East Boston should anticipate heavier traffic volumes during closures.

Traveling from Logan Airport and East Boston:

• To points North, including Maine/ Portsmouth, NH/ Newburyport, MA: Take MA-1A North to US-1 North
• To points South: Take I-90 West/Ted Williams Tunnel to I-93 South
• To points West: Take I-90 West/Ted Williams Tunnel

Logan Airport travel tips

To reduce traffic congestion during tunnel closures, MassDOT encourages those traveling to or from Logan Airport to leave their cars at home and explore Massport's list of transportation options to and from Logan, which include: the Blue Line or Silver Line , the Logan Express , the Logan Water Taxi , or the Hingham/Hull Ferry .

Vehicles leaving Logan Airport should be aware of ongoing traffic impacts during the Sumner Tunnel closures. Periodically, Massport will close the ramp connecting the airport to the Ted Williams Tunnel and re-direct traffic to minimize the backup on the mainline of I-90. Additionally, vehicles traveling on Route 1A/I-90 westbound towards Ted Williams Tunnel may see one less through lane on I-90 westbound. During some peak traffic periods, one lane is converted to a merge lane to help vehicles leaving Logan Airport to freely join the I-90 mainline. While these changes do not eliminate congestion, they are implemented in an effort to balance traffic volumes during closures of the Sumner Tunnel and provide safer driving conditions inside the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Detour options

In coordination with local agencies and emergency services, the following detours were determined as the most efficient options to divert traffic away from the Sumner Tunnel while it is closed. When possible, it is highly encouraged to utilize public transit options.

Drivers from East Boston seeking to reach the Downtown Boston area will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and onto I-93.

Drivers leaving Logan Airport seeking to reach the Downtown Boston area will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and onto I-93.

Drivers leaving Logan Airport seeking to reach I-93 North should:

• follow signs for Route 1A North to Bell Circle Rotary.
• follow signs to Route 16 to Route 1 south.
• Proceed over Route 1/Tobin Bridge and follow signs to Rutherford Avenue.
• Continue through Sullivan Square and onto I-93 North.

Drivers traveling along Route 1 south towards Downtown Boston are encouraged to divert to Route 1A in Revere at the Bell Circle Rotary. Once on Route 1A, drivers will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and onto I-93.

East Boston Traffic Diversion

When the Route 145 (Bennington Street) exit is closed, follow the local East Boston detour. Message boards and signs near the entrance of the Ted Williams Tunnel will guide residents through the route.

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Russian: Хра́м Христа́ Спаси́теля) is the tallest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world. It is situated in Moscow, on the bank of the Moskva River, a few blocks west of the Kremlin.

When the last of Napoleon's soldiers left Moscow, Tsar Alexander I signed a manifesto, December 25, 1812, declaring his intention to build a Cathedral in honor of Christ the Savior "to signify Our gratitude to Divine Providence for saving Russia from the doom that overshadowed Her" and as a memorial to the sacrifices of the Russian people.

It took some time for actual work on the projected cathedral to get started. The first finished architectural project was endorsed by Alexander I in 1817. It was a flamboyant Neoclassical design full of Freemasonic symbolism. Construction work was begun on the Sparrow Hills, the highest point in Moscow, but the site proved insecure.

In the meantime Alexander I was succeeded by his brother Nicholas. Profoundly Orthodox and patriotic, the new Tsar disliked the Neoclassicism and Freemasonry of the project selected by his brother. He commissioned his favourite architect Konstantin Thon to create a new design, taking as his model Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Thon's Neo-Byzantine design was approved in 1832, and a new site, closer to the Moscow Kremlin, was chosen by the Tsar in 1837. A convent and church on the site had to be relocated, so that the cornerstone was not laid until 1839.

The Cathedral had taken many years to build and did not emerge from its scaffolding until 1860. Some of the best Russian painters (Ivan Kramskoi, Vasily Surikov, Vasily Vereshchagin) continued to embellish the interior for another twenty years. The Cathedral was consecrated on the very day Alexander III was crowned, May 26, 1883. A year earlier, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture debuted there.

The inner sanctum of the church (naos) was ringed by a two-floor gallery, its walls inlaid with rare sorts of marble, granite, and other precious stones. The ground floor of the gallery was a memorial dedicated to the Russian victory over Napoleon. The walls displayed more than 1,000 square meters of Carrara bianca marble plaques listing major commanders, regiments, and battles of the Patriotic War of 1812 (with the lists of awards and casualties appended). The second floor of the gallery was occupied by church choirs.  

After the Revolution and, more specifically, the death of Lenin, the prominent site of the cathedral was chosen by the Soviets as the site for a monument to socialism known as the Palace of Soviets. This monument was to rise in modernistic, buttressed tiers to support a gigantic statue of Lenin perched atop a dome with his arm raised in blessing.

On December 5, 1931, by order of Stalin's minister Kaganovich, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was dynamited and reduced to rubble. It took more than one blast to destroy the church and more than a year to clear the debris from the site. The original marble high reliefs were preserved and are now on display at the Donskoy Monastery. For a long time, they were the only reminder of the largest Orthodox church ever built.

The construction of the Palace of Soviets was interrupted due to a lack of funds, problems with flooding from the nearby Moskva River, and the outbreak of war. The flooded foundation hole remained on the site until, under Nikita Khrushchev, it was transformed into a huge public swimming pool, the largest the world has ever seen.

With the end of the Soviet rule, the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in February 1990. A temporary cornerstone was laid by the end of the year. The restorer Aleksey Denisov was called upon to design a replica of extraordinary accuracy.

A construction fund was initiated in 1992 and funds began to be poured from ordinary citizens in the autumn of 1994. When construction was well under way, Denisov was replaced by Zurab Tsereteli who introduced several controversial innovations. For instance, the original marble high reliefs along the walls gave way to the modern bronze ones, which have few if any parallels in Russian church architecture. The lower church was consecrated to the Savior's Transfiguration in 1996, and the completed Cathedral of Christ the Savior was consecrated on the Transfiguration day, August 19, 2000.

A pedestrian bridge across the river from Balchug was constructed between 21 June 2003 and 3 September 2004. On the slope of the hill to the right from the cathedral are the monumental statues of Alexander II and Nicholas II. The cathedral square is graced by several chapels, designed in the same style as the cathedral itself.

Below the new church is a large hall for church assemblies, where the last Russian Tsar, and his family were glorified as saints in 2000. On May 17, 2007, the Act of Canonical Communion between the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia was signed there. The full restoration of communion with the Moscow Patriarchate was celebrated by a Divine Liturgy at which the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Alexius II and the First Hierarch of ROCOR, Metropolitan Laurus, concelebrated the Divine Liturgy for the first time in history.
