A birds-eye view over a quiet city street during the daytime. The treetops vary from green to orange to red.

The evolution of Durham from a faded tobacco town to a diverse cultural and culinary destination has been years in the making. But the ongoing development of this central North Carolina city seems to have reached a new stage. The resurgent downtown area — long a transitional neighborhood with pockets of progress — is now brimming with new restaurants, boutiques, bars and breweries. And while construction continues apace amid the historic brick warehouses , tobacco factories and textile mills — for good and ill — visitors today have reason to venture farther afield, to emerging hotspots in East Durham and the Old Five Points neighborhood. This season, only the brilliant fall foliage can compete with all the terrific food, drink and local color there is to discover across Dur’m, as residents affectionately call the dynamic Bull City.

Not unlike the famed university in its midst, Durham is one of North Carolina’s most well-rounded destinations. You’ll find blooming gardens, craft breweries, eclectic restaurants and loads of entertainment for all ages and budgets. The biggest challenge is simply deciding where to begin.

Duke University is an integral part of the Durham experience. You’ll need to plan ahead to visit its extraordinary lemur center, though the campus offers plenty of more spontaneous activities, including taking in its admission-free gardens. Of course, there’s much more to explore beyond Duke, from seeing a performance in the vintage Carolina Theatre to taking a harrowing but highly recommended journey into the past at Historic Stagville.

Learn about the people who lived in bondage at Historic Stagville

Historic Stagville flips the script on typical plantation tours, and focuses on the lives of the enslaved men, women and children who toiled on this vast property north of Durham. Back in 1864, the Bennehan and Cameron plantations stretched over 30,000 acres, with some 1000 people in bondage working in mills, on farms and inside workshops.

You can learn about the many hardships they endured on a visit to one of Durham’s most important historic sites. Admission is free, though it’s worth paying the small nominal fee for a guided tour.

Watch ring-tailed lemurs at the Duke Lemur Center

If you don’t have the chance to visit Madagascar this year, book a visit to the Duke Lemur Center instead. Here you can see the world’s largest collection of these wide-eyed primates outside of their African island home. Over 200 lemurs and bush babies, representing over a dozen different species, reside in this wooded 85-acre sanctuary.

The center offers both self-guided tours and small-group specialized tours - such as the ‘walking with lemurs’ tour where you visit right at meal time. Book well in advance as all tours tend to sell out. If you’re looking for unique things to do in Durham, the Duke Lemur Center should be at the top of your list.

A small stream flows over rocks in the middle of the forested Eno River State Park in Durham, NC

Hike through the forests of Eno River State Park

Leafy nature escapes are just a car ride away from downtown Durham. Eno River State Park, with its 28 miles of trails has a good mix of easy and challenging hikes. One of Durham’s best is the Cox Mountain Trail, a 3.8-mile loop that crosses a suspension bridge, takes you up to a hilltop and then back down along the trickling, forest-lined Eno River. It’s about a 15-minute drive northwest of Durham.

Stroll Durham’s liveliest district on 9th Street

Not unlike New York’s East Village , Durham’s 9th Street is packed with eye-catching restaurants, indie stores and inviting cafes well placed for taking in the passing street scene. You can munch on artisanal donuts while sipping a mocha latte at Monuts , nurse a house-made craft beer at Flying Bull or browse for vintage vinyl at Hunky Dory Record Store . The street’s easy-to-walk-to location makes it a great option when looking for things to do near Duke University.

Spend a fun-filled (and secretly educational) day at the Museum of Life and Science

One of the best attractions for kids in Durham is the sprawling Museum of Life & Science , located three miles north of downtown. Be forewarned: you could spend hours exploring the interactive exhibits scattered across 84 acres.

Highlights include the butterfly house, sound garden, insectarium, outdoor play areas, a budding builder’s lab and a barnyard full of farm animals. Don’t miss a ride on the open-sided narrow-gauge railroad or a romp through woods that are dotted with life-sized dinosaurs.

Watch the actors take the stage at the Carolina Theatre

Though Duke hogs all the attention, Durham has much more up its sleeve than just its (admittedly renowned) university. You’ll find some great things to do in downtown, especially when it comes to entertainment. The 1000-seat Carolina Theatre is a restored 1920s beauty that stages wide-ranging fare.

You might catch a whimsical dance performance, a raucous gospel choir or a comedy show, though there’s also independent film screenings and the odd big-name band that takes the stage.

Spend date night at Vin Rouge

Durham doesn’t lack options when it comes to planning an intimate dinner. Amid French country ambiance, Vin Rouge earns high marks for its beautifully turned out French bistro classics (onion soup, escargots, duck confit). Top-notch seafood is also a hit - particularly the bouillabaisse, which is an aphrodisiac according to some chefs in Marseille (where the dish originated).

The excellent wine list adds to the appeal. You can also come for a decadent Sunday brunch - a great choice for couples looking for fun things to do in Durham.

Craft cocktails are available at Durham's popular Kingfisher bar

Sip some of Durham’s finest craft cocktails at Kingfisher

A vibrant bar scene offers ample variety when seeking out fun things to do at night in Durham. Named one of the city’s best bars after opening in 2019, Kingfisher serves up imaginatively crafted cocktails made from locally sourced spirits and seasonal ingredients.

The handsomely designed downstairs space features works by resident artists and makes an inviting backdrop to lingering over libations like the Shire Folk (vodka, nasturtium leaf, boissiere dry vermouth and lime).

Catch a baseball game or see a performance at the American Tobacco Campus

The former home of the world’s largest tobacco company is now the epicenter of a vibrant entertainment district . Historic red brick buildings form the backdrop to locally owned shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. At DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center) you can catch musicals, comedy shows and concerts.

Also on campus is the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home to the city’s minor league baseball team (famously depicted in the 1988 Kevin Costner film Bull Durham). It’s great fun to see a game during the season, which runs from mid-April to early September.

Smell the flowers in bloom at Sarah P Duke Gardens

There are loads of free things to do in Durham, from picnicking in the park to seeing special exhibitions around town. One of the best places for cost-free adventure is the Sarah P Duke Gardens , a botanical wonderland of forested paths, lily-covered ponds and over 2500 plant species. Walking paths meander through the various sections, with myriad photo opportunities.

Sip craft beers by the fire at Ponysaurus Brewing

Even when the temperatures plummet, Durham has appealing things to do in the winter. In the beer garden of Ponysaurus Brewing you can stay warm and toasty by the fire pits while sampling one of their signature ales or barrel-aged sours. The local craft brewer also has hot non-alcoholic apple cider and even smores, not to mention the excellent thin-crust pizzas that are available year-round.

Go on a scavenger hunt at the 21c Museum Hotel

One of Durham’s best boutique hotels is also a showcase for innovative artwork. Across two stories of gallery space, the 21c Museum Hotel hosts changing exhibitions and site-specific installations - and there’s never an admission charge. Afterward, take a peek inside the former bank vault (now a lounge) or enjoy a contemporary take on regional flavors at the stylish Counting House restaurant. For a bit of adventure, you can partake in one of the hotel’s DIY scavenger hunts.

The 21c is set in the 17-story art deco Hill Building, which is something of a mini Empire State Building. In fact, it was designed by the same NYC architecture firm in the 1930s.

There are only two places to go in the world where you can find the endangered lemur.

The first is its endemic homeland of Madagascar, and the second would be Durham, North Carolina, strange as that might seem.

In 1966, two researchers took the opportunity to work together to expand their studies.

John Buettner-Janusch of Yale University had in his possession a group of about 60 lemurs which he used to study biochemical genetics.

He handed the lemurs over to Peter Klopfer, a Duke University biologist who placed the lemurs in Duke Forest.

Fifty years later, the lemurs thrived in the protected habitat, proliferating to hundreds of individuals across 14 different species.

The 100-acre Duke Lemur Center sees over 35,000 visitors each year and has helped protect the endangered animals from extinction.

Today, the Duke Lemur Center is one of the most interesting things to do in Durham and offers different tour packages that take you through the forest and even behind the scenes.

One tour option lets you get up close and personal with the animals, as well as the intricate process of the research that happens behind the curtains.

Eno River State Park

While the urban center of Durham is expanding, the city maintains nearly 30 miles of trails and natural scenic areas at Eno River State Park . It is the go-to outdoor recreation area of Durham and a peaceful green space during lunchtime and on the weekends. The Eno River is a regular spot for locals and visitors looking for recreation options like hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, and fishing.

The river flows by forests, bluffs, and a historic mill. There is a diverse number of wildflowers along the river, and if this is of particular interest to you, it is worth the effort to find Willie Duke's Bluff on the lower Eno River.

The 60-foot-high bluff is surrounded by many wildflowers, and it is one of the most picturesque spots along the river. If you find the time to include a little more outdoor adventure, try going for a hike at Cox Mountain .

Meditating sifaka lemur at the Duke Lemur Center

The Duke Lemur Center has the largest collection of lemurs outside of Madagascar. You can get an up-close look at the lemurs and the research facility. Find out how the center combines conservation efforts and scientific research to help protect this threatened animal.

More than 39 species of lemurs have been at the center since it opened in 1966. A unique area of the Duke Lemur Center is the Division of Fossil Primates, which is a research collection of primate fossils that includes 13 million-year-old fossils of New World monkeys, found in Colombia, and other primate fossils that are more than 50 million years old.

There are regular tours available, but if you plan ahead, you can make a reservation for the habitat experience, which gives you the most intimate and interactive opportunity, but space is limited and it fills up quickly.

Keep in mind that tours are season-dependent, so most public tours are available from May through September and more limited options the rest of the year, so look at the center's website and calendar for updates.

Stagville State Historic Site

The Stagville State Historic Site is one of three historic sites in the county. It is a former plantation that was the largest in the state. It sits on the land of the plantations of the Bennehan-Cameron family, who owned more than 900 slaves. The site houses important history about slaves and even has slaveholding records available for visitors to research.

The plantation is preserved, with several buildings to see, including the Bennehan House, Holman House at Horton Grove, and the Great Barn.

A must-see at the site is the preserved slave quarters. There are four located on the grounds, which provide a compelling glimpse into the life of a slave on one of North Carolina's largest plantations. Tours take place throughout the day and last about an hour.

The Carolina Theatre

An important part of the arts community in Durham is the restored Carolina Theatre . The non-profit performance center is the vintage backdrop for concerts and film festivals throughout the year. The interior décor and exterior façade pay homage to the theater's roots as a 1920s movie house.

The theater featured the world premiere of the movie Bull Durham , which featured the city's beloved baseball team, the Durham Bulls. The theater hosts special performance events but also a collection of daily films, which you can see in the historic movie house.

For families visiting Durham, if your stay includes a Saturday, a perfect time to visit the Carolina Theatre is for the Family Saturday Series. Each week, the theatre showcases programs ranging from live music to storytelling suitable for all ages for just $5 a ticket.

Duke Homestead State Historic Site

Step inside the Duke family home on the Duke Homestead State Historic Site . Walk through the homestead and see the buildings on the Duke family farm, tobacco barns, and the original factory.

The Duke family was one of the wealthiest families in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Learn more about the family whose name is attached to Duke University and Duke Energy. There is a museum about the evolution of the tobacco industry, and guided tours are available.

There are events and festivals held at the homestead throughout the year, which are an enjoyable way to visit the site.

Durham Farmers' Market

If your visit to Durham includes a Saturday, you should plan a weekend morning stop at the Durham Farmers' Market . Local vendors fill the stalls at the Pavilion at Durham Central Park with fresh and locally grown produce, flowers, bakery items, honey, crafts, and artisan foods.

The market started in 1999 and became a favorite and permanent staple of the Durham culture. As part of the commitment to buy local, farmers and other vendors who sell items must be established within 70 miles of Durham.

The best time to visit the Durham Farmers' Market is Saturday morning, when they are open from 8am to noon, April through November. There are Wednesday afternoon markets that run weekly through September.

Address: 501 Foster Street, Durham, North Carolina

Durham Street Murals

A fun way to explore Durham is by taking a self-guided tour around local streets to find and admire the 26 elaborate and artsy murals on local buildings. There are more than 40,000 square feet of murals in the University Hill district.

The area is redeveloped into mixed-use spaces for business, housing, social spots, restaurants, and retail, so there is plenty to experience along the way. You can find a Mural Durham map online or pick up a mural finder guide in the Discover Durham Visitor Information Center in the heart of downtown, so you can check them off along the way.

The Durham lodging scene is diverse. To fully embrace the local flavor, stay at a bed-and-breakfast in one of the historic inns like the Morehead Manor Bed & Breakfast , a large elegant manor with private, spacious rooms located a mile from downtown.

Three boutique hotels downtown are within a block of each other, with amenities that are open to the public and guests like the art museum at 21C Museum Hotel Durham , the rooftop view of the city at The Durham Hotel, and the pool and social deck at the retro Unscripted Durham hotel.

15 Best Things to Do in Durham (NC)

It’s estimated that over nine million people visit Durham, North Carolina each year.  It’s earned national accolades as one of the best places to work, live, and play, so it’s no wonder that tourists want to see it for themselves.

Whether you go for the lively night life, award winning performing arts, action-packed sports, fantastic outdoor adventure, eco-agriculture, tons of shopping, or historical and educational sight-seeing, Durham delivers.

The city is bursting at the seams with unique and fun things to do. And while you’re there, don’t forget Chapel Hill – just ten miles from Durham, it’s another unique (and rival) town with tons to offer.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Durham :

1. Duke University

Duke University

Originally Trinity College until 1924, Duke University is one of the United States top colleges.  Endowed by the cigarette fortune of the Duke family, the university is known for rigorous academic programs and top ranked sports.

The main campus is Georgian style and the west campus has neo-Gothic architecture – both of which are stunning to walk through.

Do a self-guided tour or jump on an admissions tour to learn the history and legacy of this impressive institution.

2. Duke University Lemur Center

Lemur Center

Everyone’s favourite stop in Durham is the Lemur Center.  Just two miles from main campus, this is the largest collection of the endangered primates outside of Madagascar, their native country.

The centre is focused on research, scholarship, and conservation and they run guided tours on most days that are often booked well in advance.

Their mission is to promote a deep appreciation of our planet’s amazing biodiversity and the inherent power behind new scientific discoveries. It’s almost impossible not to fall in love with these wide-eyed fuzzy creatures.

3. Stagville

Stagville Plantation

Historic Stagville was once one of the largest plantations in the pre-American Civil War South.  With 30,000 acres and 900 slaves, it is the site of an important piece of history.

You’ll be able to explore 18th and 19th century homes, the old slave quarters, and a one-of-a-kind barn.

In addition to tours, Stagville also has regular educational and cultural events on site – like lectures on the personal lives, struggles, and celebrations of the enslaved.

Stagville is dedicated to studying and preserving African-American culture.

4. Bennett Place

Bennett Place House

In April 1865, at Bennett Place, the largest troop surrender of Confederate soldiers occurred, effectively ending the American Civil War.

Confederate general Joseph E. Johnson met there with his rival, General William T. Sherman and surrendered all the southern armies in Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas.

Today you can explore the museum gallery and historic structures, watch special re-enactments, and visit a theatre which shows a short film called ‘Dawn of Peace.’

You can also visit the Everett-Thissen Research Library which has over 1,000 books on the Civil War era.

5. Nasher Museum of Art

Nasher Museum of Art

Part of the Duke University system, The Nasher is home to an incredible collection of international and contemporary pieces.

The building itself is a futuristic cube that complements the more than 10,000 works of art inside.

The four permanent collections include pre-Columbian Art of the Americas, Medieval Art, Classical Antiquities, and modern contemporary with a concentration on the African diaspora.

This is one of the best university collections in the country.

6. West Point on the Eno River

West Point on the Eno River

This park along the Eno River covers over 400 acres and has three historic buildings.  It’s the perfect combination of history and natural scenery.

There are five miles of nature trails that follow the river and some surrounding bluffs.  There’s also an amphitheatre, fishing areas, rapids that are great for paddling, and picnic facilities.

The highlight of the park is West Point Mill.  Once one of 32 mills along the river, it has been rebuilt on the site of what was the largest mill.  At its height, it was the centre and heartbeat of a 300 family community. It’s a working mill once again and you can buy products there at the shop.

Take a tour of the restored mill owners home as well as the old tobacco pack house – which is now home to the Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography.

7. Agra-tourism

Blue Whistler Farm

Southern Living recently named Durham the ‘Tastiest Town in the South.’ A distinction that is well deserved as all the local foodies will tell you.  Surrounding this nationally celebrated food scene, Agra tourism has developed so that visitors can get a peek behind the scenes.

There are a number of local farms you can visit and a number of tour packages you can buy to visit several all in one day.

Blue Whistler Farm is one working farm of note, as is Funny Girl Farm with its year round farm stand.

Considered by many to be the epi-centre of North Carolina’s farm to table movement, Durham has great places to discover like Watts Grocery, Fullsteam Brewery, Durham Farmer’s Market, and the South Durham Market.

8. The Durham Bulls

Durham Bulls

Made famous by the 1988 movie Bull Durham, the nationally acclaimed Triple-A baseball team is a must see for any sports fans.  The 10,000 seat stadium itself has a 32-foot-tall wall behind left field and a towering bull on top.

To connect the modern day with the historic era, the architecture of the stadium matches the original Durham Bull’s stadium as well as the historic tobacco warehouses in the neighbourhood.

Have the ultimate American experience with a beer, a hotdog, and the Durham Bulls.

9. Brightleaf Square

Brightleaf Square

Durham has done a fantastic job of renovating its historic past in order to make it a functional part of modern day city life.  The best example of this is the Brightleaf Square District. It’s anchored by two renovated tobacco warehouses which have been turned into fabulous restaurants, shops, and bars.

Over the years the area has branched out along Main Street as the popularity and reputation of Brightleaf has grown.

The warehouses were built in the early 20th century in order to store and age tobacco being grown in the area. It’s now a part of the National Register of Historic Places and some of the best that Durham has to offer can be found here.

10. Eno River State Park

Eno River State Park

Just ten miles from downtown, the Eno River State Park provides the perfect balance of nature to downtowns busy bustle.

The river flows for 33 miles through the city and ends in Falls Lake.  Along the way it passes lovely bluffs, a historic mill, and pine forest and with five access points into the park, it’s an easy escape.

Enjoy fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and overnight camping. With over 30 miles of trails this is the place locals come to unwind and sink into what’s beautiful about Durham.

11. The American Tobacco Trail

The American Tobacco Trail

The American Tobacco Trail is a Rails-to-Trails project that runs for almost 23 miles through the Research Triangle in Eastern North Carolina.

Built out of the abandoned railroad tracks that were originally built for the American Tobacco Company in the 1970’s.

You can bike, hike, walk, horseback ride, and run and it’s incredibly popular with locals.  The trail begins in the south near New Hill and ends near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

12. Duke University Chapel

Duke University Chapel

Located on the university’s West Campus, Duke University Chapel is a truly magnificent piece of history and architecture.  Built in the 1930’s, this neo-Gothic building has a striking 210-foot tower with 77 colourful, glass windows depicting various scenes from the bible.

It also has pointed arches, stone piers, flying buttresses, and ribbed vaults.  History has it that during the two years of construction, students routinely gathered at the stone mason’s huts to watch as the chapel was being built.

It now has an interdenominational congregation known for its inspiring music and worship.

13. Falls Lake State Recreation Area

Falls Lake

Falls Lake is a 12,000-acre reservoir with more than 300 campsites, five swimming beaches, boat ramps, and great paddling.

Near the Beaverdam access point there are wonderful mountain bike trails.

There are also extensive hiking trails, including the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail that winds through the area and is considered its centrepiece.

14. Local Eats

Bull City Burger and Brewery

Durham’s reputation is that of a ‘foodie’ city.  This is a town full of one-of-a-kind dining experiences.  Everything from soul food, southern cooking, and international cuisine can be found on the best of the best lists. Fresh, local, and family owned are the buzz words.

Each year each of Durham’s media outlets host voter polls to determine the new must visit restaurants.  Some recent non-chain winners include Guglhupf Bakery, Bull City Burger and Brewery, Foster’s Market, Mateo Bar de Tapas and Vin Rouge, and Elmo’s Diner.

If you’re interested in local breweries check out Sam’s Bottle Shop and the best late night meal is said to be at the Parts & Labor Motorco.

15. The Golden Belt

The Golden Belt

If you’re looking for what’s innovative in Durham, you don’t have to look further than The Golden Belt.  A refurbished and repurposed textile mill that originally made the pouches for Bull Durham tobacco, it is now a LEED Gold certified complex that is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Golden Belt has galleries, artist studios, event spaces, apartment homes, offices, live music, dance and theatre performances, restaurants, and much more.

The space is also interactive.  Guests are able to tour the artist studios, speak with the artists themselves and fully explore this exciting hub of creativity.

Yoga classes are available, as well as a salon, and a tattoo shop. Every third Friday of the month all 30 studios are open at the same time for tours.

NCGOP convention headlined by potential Trump VP picks

Tom George Image

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- It was a busy weekend in North Carolina politics as our state takes center stage in the race for the White House.

The NC Republican Party convention in Greensboro wasn't just getting ready for the national convention in Milwaukee which is set to re-nominate Former President Donald Trump for president; it was also a chance in a key battleground state for two potential Trump running mates to take the stage.

The star of the night was someone many are just meeting for the first time, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.

Burgum has been floated as a potential Trump Vice President pick and says he has a lot in common with the former president - they're both businessmen and Burgum was even in court to support Trump this week.

"I never in my career saw a CEO in any industry work as hard as Trump works every single day and when he's working that hard he's working that hard for you and for our country, that's why he's doing it," Burgum told the crowd.

But for Trump supporters, lunch headliner Vivek Ramaswamy needed no introduction.

Some in the crowd began chanting "VP, VP," making it clear they wanted to see Ramaswamy as Trump's number two.

Ramaswamy also took the stage with Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who said he believes they're both a part of a more diverse GOP.

"This is just not just the party of old rich white guys, this is the party of true inclusion and true freedom and we always have been," Robinson said.

But at a time in North Carolina when DEI programs have come under debate, Robinson made it clear he opposes those initiatives.

"We need to get back to teaching civics and history not that 1619 false garbage," Robinson said.

He said he would appoint state school board members who feel the same.

"When I take office in January guess what I get to do? I get to flip that board not upside down but right side up," he said.

Robinson also vowed to tackle the economy and is drawing a contrast with Democratic opponent Josh Stein in a tight race

"Josh Stein is part of a losing team," he said. "I'm part of a winning team."

With Trump and Robinson leading the ticket, the NCGOP is hoping to keep the state red after Trump narrowly carried North Carolina in 2020.

They are getting help from some North Carolina connections at high levels - former state party chair Michael Whatley is now the RNC Chair and believes our state is crucial to the GOP's path to the White House.

He said Trump's choice of running mate would also be important as Trump tries to persuade battleground state voters. Whatley said Trump would be closely watching Burgum and Ramaswamy's speeches to see how they perform on the campaign trail.

"I think it'll be terribly important. I think it's got to be somebody that the president feels comfortable that he can work with on a daily basis and somebody that can be the next president of the United States. I know he is looking at this process and he'll make his decision when it's time," Whatley said.

He also signaled a change in strategy showing more support for early voting, something that Democrats historically have taken advantage of in larger numbers. Whatley believes Republicans need to play at the same level, and will be urging supporters to "bank their votes" before Election Day this fall.
