The 9 Best Day Trips from Phuket, Thailand

day trips from phuket old town

When in Phuket, make the most of Southern Thailand's natural features. White-sand beaches, placid mangrove coasts, old-growth rainforest, and superb underwater landscapes can all be found close to the island.

Located in the neighboring provinces of Phang Nga, Surat Thani, and Krabi, this list of Phuket day trips includes some hyper-popular places like Phang Nga Bay and Koh Phi Phi, as well as off-the-beaten-path stops such as Cheow.

Phang Nga Bay: Striking Limestone Islands

John Seaton Callahan/Getty Images

Ao Phang Nga National Park’s 100-plus limestone islands look almost alien in origin, with gravity-defying spires and steep, jungle-carpeted peaks rising from the sea.

Many day trips to Phang Nga Bay include a photo op at Koh Tapu, famous for its cameo role in a James Bond movie ; kayaking through Koh Panak and Koh Hong’s sea caves; and a lunch stopover at the Muslim fishing village of Koh Panyee.

Getting there: Tours of Phang Nga bay usually originate from Bang Rong Pier .

Travel tip: Leave in the early morning or mid-afternoon to avoid the tourist crush. Most trips to Phang Nga take place over a few hours in the middle of the day.

Khao Sok National Park: Jungle Adventures

Kichigin/Getty Images

The rebels that camped out in Khao Sok’s jungles in the 70s and 80s unwittingly saved it from deforestation. The jungle today is unspoiled and spectacular—with waterfalls, caves, and rare animals that might occasionally cross your path!

Make the most out of the National Park’s 280-plus square miles by kayaking down the Sok River through almost impenetrable rainforest; walking down jungle trails to Khao Sok’s scenic waterfalls; or braving Nam Talu Cave’s 2,700-foot-long passage.

Book your park adventure at the Visitor Center near Khao Sok’s main entrance, or through the official site .

Getting there: Ride the bus to Surat Thani from Phuket’s Bus Terminal 2 ; get off at the park entrance near Khlong Sok Village. It’s a four-hour drive—the earlier you leave, the better. (Private tours leave before dawn.)

Travel tip: Khao Sok receives the most rainfall in all of Thailand, so plan your trip around the area’s dry season from December to April .

Koh Phi Phi: Beaches & “The Beach”

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

While Koh Phi Phi is one of Thailand’s most famous beach destinations, the crowds heading there have taken a bit of the shine off. Still, its close access to Phuket and gorgeous white-sand beaches remain a potent draw for Phuket visitors.

Six islands make up Koh Phi Phi, including Koh Phi Phi Don, home of Monkey Beach’s macaques and Laem Thong’s dazzling white sands. As the main port for the islands, the village of Tonsai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don will be your first stop; the town is replete with budget resorts and restaurants.

Getting there: Ferries from Phuket’s Rassada Pier depart three times daily (four in high season) to make the two-hour trip to Tonsai Bay.

Travel tip: Ko Phi Phi Le, whose Maya Bay served as a backdrop for Leonardo DiCaprio’s star turn on The Beach, closed in 2018 due to overtourism; it is tentatively rescheduled to reopen in June 2021.

Khao Lak: Laid-Back Culture and Nature

Jan-Otto/Getty Images

The town of Khao Lak is better known as a jump-off point to Similan and Ko Surin, but its natural attractions and cultural cachet make it worth a detour.

Start with the beaches—La On Village and nearby Nang Thong Beach are two of the most popular. Further inland, explore Khao Lak's national parks (Khao Lak Lam Ru and Thai Muang) along with their waterfalls and other natural wonders.

Closer to town, you’ll find the Bang Niang Night Market (open between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday), and the International Tsunami Museum commemorating the 2004 tsunami that killed more than 4,000 in Khao Lak alone.

Getting there: Take the bus to Takua Pa from Phuket Bus Terminal 2; disembark when the bus passes through Khao Lak. Buses leave every hour for the 1.5-hour-long trip.

Travel tip: Visit during the Turtle Festival in the first week of March, when volunteers release turtle hatchlings at Thai Muang National Park Beach.

Koh Similan: Diving & Snorkeling Destination

sonatali/Getty Images

The promise of excellent snorkeling and scuba diving is what draws adventure seekers to Mu Koh Similan National Park, which covers more than 87 square miles and is made up of 11 islands: most notably Koh Similan (Island Number 8), site of the scenic Sail Rock and white-sand beach; Koh Payu (Island No. 6), the Park’s best snorkeling spot; and lunch at Koh Miang (Island No. 4), with a chance to explore the island’s thick jungle cover.

Around the islands, a diverse collection of aquatic life can be seen by divers. Whale sharks are a common sight; their visits reach an absolute peak between January and March.

Getting there: Ride a bus from Phuket to Khao Lak (1.5 hours), where boats cover the distance from the pier to Koh Similan in a little over an hour. The park is only open during peak season, from October 16 to May 15.

Travel tip: Tourist entry to Koh Similan is highly regulated. Visitors need to purchase a Marine Park ticket before entering; package tour companies can take care of this for you, factoring the ticket price into the total package.

Railay Peninsula: Rock Climbing Hotspot

Westend61/Getty Images

Rock climbers have made a mecca out of the limestone cliff faces of Railay Peninsula in Krabi Province. Some 700 bolted routes wind up Railay's cliffs and caves; local climbing shops provide ropes, chalk bags, and other essential gear in addition to conducting classes for beginners.

Diamond Cave Wall and the Pinnacle are two favorite spots for novice climbers, while more experienced climbers can try the challenging cliffs (and deepwater solo experience) at Tonsai. After your climb, relax at Phra Nang Beach or explore the sea by kayak.

Getting there: Take the Ao Nang Princess Ferry from Rassada Pier in Phuket to Railay. The trip takes a little over two hours, with a stopover at Ao Nang. Longtail boats can take you from the Railay pier to your preferred beach.

Travel tip: Peak climbing season occurs in the dry season from November to April.

Cheow Lan Lake: Artificial Lake in a Rainforest

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

This artificial lake is technically part of Khao Sok Park, but it deserves its own position as a day trip from Phuket. Created in 1987 to power a hydroelectric plant, Cheow Lan Lake is a 63-square-mile reservoir fringed by old-growth rainforest and studded with curious limestone formations.

A scenic lake tour of Cheow Lan crosses from one end of the lake to the other in two hours. Early-morning boat safaris glide along the shores to catch views of forest wildlife, including longtail macaques and great hornbills.

Getting there: Package tours can be arranged for early-morning departures from your Phuket hotel; the 110-mile trip will take three to four hours each way. The Ratchaprapha Dam marina hosts boats for lake trips and their booking offices.

Travel tip: Don't visit in the rainy season from May to November, as wildlife stops visiting the lake edge and chilly rains will completely dampen the boating experience.

Takua Pa: Old Town and a "Little Amazon"

Samuel Nielsen / EyeEm / Getty Images

The sleepy town of Takua Pa has a surprising history behind it. Like Phuket Town, Takua Pa grew rich off of the tin trade. The distinctive mansions (resembling those of both Phuket Town and Penang in Malaysia ) can be seen on Thanon Si Takua Pa and adjoining streets.

This town is famous for its khanom pia (Chinese cake), made at Tuangrat Taosor from a generations-old recipe. For a nature-based experience, ride a boat down Takua Pa’s “Little Amazon," a riverside mangrove forest thick with overgrowth and the occasional monkey and snake traipsing through the canopy!

Getting there: Take the bus to Takua Pa from Phuket Bus Terminal 2; these leave every hour, and take two hours to cover the distance.

Travel tip: Time your visit to coincide with Old Takua Pa Sunday Market and its collection of Thai street food . This market takes place every Sunday evening between November and May.

Koh Surin: Best Diving in the Andamans

acro_phuket/Getty Images

Divers visiting Mu Koh Surin National Park can expect to see a rich proliferation of undersea life within the park’s 50-odd square miles. Any visit might bring you face-to-face with whitetip reef sharks, leatherback turtles, moray eels, and the occasional whale shark (the latter most commonly congregating at Richelieu Rock).

Above the water’s surface, visitors can swim at one of the park’s beaches; embark on a hiking tour into the interior; or visit a Moken “sea gypsy” village. The Visitor Center rents out snorkels, approves hikes, and provides camping facilities in the park.

Getting there: Private speedboat tours from Phuket are the best arrangements you can make. You can also go to Khao Lak on your own and arrange for a return boat trip from there.

Travel tip: Visit during peak diving season between December and April, when the water temperature and wind are at their best. Visit after February for your best chances of spotting large pelagic species in the waters.

What to do in Phuket?

What are the best things to do in Phuket is one of the most important questions people ask us when planning a trip. We explored the island for 30 years to bring you the best of Phuket, sorted in what we saw and what people liked the most. There is an incredibly vast range of attractions, activities and tours, from fabulous beaches and natural wonders to glittering temples and human-made attractions for you to explore and experience.

Phang Nga Bay is an absolute must-do, with jaw-dropping limestone cliffs and flooded caves. Phi Phi islands are everyone’s second favourite thing to do in Phuket, even though they can be a little crowded. The 45-meter-high Big Buddha of Phuket is also on everyone’s list, and this attraction is not difficult to reach. Walking with the elephants to help them escape a life of hard labour is the next big thing in Phuket and is growing fast in popularity.

4 Important things to know when planning tours in Phuket

1 . We recommend planning just a few tours and day trips before travelling, then once here you can adjust your plan according to your mood or the weather. However, if you plan to visit Phuket during the peak season (end of December and January) you should try to book the tours that relate to islands, cruises and Phang Nga Bay (especially the famous John Gray SeaCanoe )

2. You can book those day trips once here; they are usually cheaper and can be booked directly from your hotel, in the street or one of the many travel agencies. We added information on each attraction.

3. Tours always include transportation from and to your hotel, so that is not a worry!

4. Some tours may look more expensive than others, but those usually offer a better experience: less crowded, better service and overall: a better experience.

What to Do in Phuket with Kids and family activities in Phuket

Our full list of things to do

With so much to choose from, it may be challenging to fit all the things to do in Phuket into one holiday. So to make your travel planning a lot easier, we listed here a long list of must-do in Phuket sorted by popularity. Some are on the island, and some are around the island but easily accessible in one day.

1. Explore the Beaches of Phuket

The beaches of Phuket

This seems to be so obvious thing to do in Phuket since this is the main reason why most travellers travel such long distances, but did you know that we counted more than 46 beaches? You probably know the famous ones, mostly located on the southwest coast: Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala and Nai Harn. They are famous because they are truly beautiful, but they can also be too busy if you come to find peace and isolation.

Don’t limit yourself to one beach and explore Phuket: drive around and discover the north and east coast beaches as some are superb and still peaceful: Nai Yang, Naithon, and Mai Khao Beaches. Read more about Phuket beaches .

2. Explore Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay by Sea Canoe

The incredible scenery of Phang Nga has always been at the top of our list of places to visit. There are many ways to explore it. You can take a lazy sunset cruise on a Chinese Junk or explore Phang Nga by canoe through caves and enclosed lagoons. If you can afford it, a full day on a customised private cruise around Phang Nga is the most relaxing and enjoyable experience. Day trips to Phang Nga usually include a stop at the famous James Bond Island and Koh Panyi, the village built entirely on stilts. Similar to the famous Halong Bay in Vietnam, these landscapes will leave unforgettable memories. Read more about Phang Nga Bay

Excursion à la journée dans la baie de Phang Nga

How to get there : Phang Nga can be booked even one day before, once in Phuket, at your hotel or street booth. However, everyone agrees that the best way to do it is with John Gray Seacanoe , which should be booked in advance online, especially during the high season (December to May) When to get there : Thanks to its sheltered geography, Phang Nga is accessible and beautiful all year round, even during the rainy season. The sea is never rough, so you won’t have to worry about seasickness.

3. Climb to Big Buddha of Phuket

Big Buddha Phuket

Number 3 on our list of best things to do in Phuket has always been the Big Buddha, an iconic 45-meter tall white marble statue sitting at the top of Nakkerd hill in the south of the island. The construction of this statue, entirely from donations, started in 2002. You can contribute too by sponsoring one small white marble tile and signing your name on it.

It’s a great thing to do; your name will be there forever. Remember that Big Buddha is more than just a landmark; it is a religious place. You should respect it by dressing appropriately: if you wear shorts or skirts above the knee , you will need to wear a sarong provided by security at the entrance. It would be best if you also tried to keep your voice down, which unfortunately is not very well understood by tourists.

The Big Buddha of Phuket

The road to get up there is steep but well-paved, and the panoramic view from the top is worth the climb. To the north, you can see the whole of Chalong Bay to Phang Nga; in the south, you will see Kata Beach. On the way down, stop at one of the many little panoramic bars to get a bird’s view of Karon Beach. Read more about Phuket Big Buddha

How to get there : you can easily reach the Big Buddha with your motorbike or car. Tuk-tuks will happily take you there and wait for you. Keep in mind that most tours include a visit to the Big Buddha. When to get there : all year round Price : Entrance is free but donations are appreciated

4. Take a Trip to Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi is a beautiful archipelago made of fantastic beaches and immense cliffs over two bays you can admire from a famous viewpoint. Phi Phi is also renowned among young crowds for those legendary beach parties lasting all night long, reminding a bit of the Full Moon Parties on Koh Phangan. But this fame comes with a price, and Phi Phi may have become too popular.

The crowds, greed and developments have severely affected the island, so don’t imagine yourself walking alone on the deserted Maya Beach like they do in the movie The Beach, unless you book a hotel in the north of the island. Read more about Phi Phi Islands

longtail boats on Long Beach in Phi Phi Island

How to get there : Book it in advance if you plan to stay overnight. You can book a ferry or speedboat once in Phuket if you only want to go for the day, but day trips usually allow you such a short time on Phi Phi you won’t have much time for exploration. The price starts as cheap as 375 baht for a ferry ticket + hotel transfer.

When to go there : Phi Phi island is open all year round, but of course, it’s more beautiful with a blue sky during the high season (December to May). During the low season, the ride can be bumpy, so take some pills if you are prone to seasickness.

5. Maya Bay

Maya Bay in Phi Phi Islands

We can’t talk about Phi Phi Islands without talking about Maya Bay. We listed it separately because it can be a day trip on its own. Maya Bay has reopened after being closed for a while but access is restricted. Read more about Maya Bay

6. Party on Bangla Road

Bangla Road

Bangla Road might not be to everyone’s taste, but judging by the enormous crowd walking up and down Patong walking street every night, Bangla is on many people’s must-see list. Unlike what most people believe, Soi Bangla is not a Sin City for Single Men. It’s a colourful and vibrant street full of life, restaurants, shops, bars and dancing girls.

If you want to know more, enter these famous Go-Go bars and see what a go-go bar is. You will often see couples tourists having a drink; Patong is a lot more easygoing than Bangkok or Pattaya. Read more about Bangla Road

Bangla Road in Patong Beach

When to go there : Bangla is lively all year round. Nothing happens during the day, and the street closes to traffic around 7 pm. However, the party atmosphere only kicks in after 9 or 10 pm.

7. Explore Phuket Old Town

Phuket Town

It’s hard to resist those old Sino-Portuguese streets with beautiful shophouses and magnificent mansions. Phuket’s old town is perfect for a half-day, with many small cafes, bakeries, and eateries along the way. You can reach there by tuk-tuk or even with the local blue bus that stops at the city market, then walk to Thalang Road, the most popular of the old streets of Phuket Town.

Visit the local markets near the bus station and explore the little streets here and there to discover some incredible abandoned mansions. Don’t miss the Phuket Walking Street on Sunday, a chance to try a lot of local food you cannot find easily! Read more about Phuket Old Town

Soi Romanee in Phuket Town

How to get there : Tuk-Tuk or Grab taxis are the standard options. Then the cheapest way apart from driving there yourself is to ride the local blue bus .

8. Visit Chalong Temple

Wat Chalong Phuket

Chalong Temple (locally called Wat Chalong), built at the beginning of the 19th century, is the largest and the most visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. The most iconic building on the temple grounds is a 60-meter-tall stupa sheltering a fragment of bone from Buddha. Inside the building, beautiful paintings and illustrations on the walls and ceilings narrate the life of Lord Buddha, and each floor is full of donated golden statues.

You can also climb stairs to reach a terrace and enjoy a panoramic view. Just like in any temple in Thailand, remember to dress appropriately: no shorts or skirts above the knee , and no sleeveless shirts. Remember to remove shoes and caps when entering the temple buildings. Read more about Wat Chalong

Wat Chalong Phuket

How to get there : easy to reach by car or motorbike. Most tours will include Wat Chalong, usually combined with a visit to the Big Buddha. When to get there : the temple is open from 7 am to 5 pm, but you can walk around the property anytime. Price : free entrance, but donations are appreciated

9. Explore the many Night Markets!

phuket lard yai street market

Phuket has a lot of night markets, but on any day of the week, the line between a night market and a night bazaar is relatively thin. Some markets only open during the weekend, and some during the weekdays. The Sunday Walking Street Market on the old Thalang Road of Phuket Town is the most creative. 10. Relax or Party in a Beach Club

catch beach club 21

There is a growing list of superb beach clubs all around Phuket. Most are open all day for customers to enjoy food and drinks on comfortable sofas or beach beds, and some turn into party clubs at night. As you may expect, the prices are often on the high side in the most popular clubs such as Catch Beach Club or Carpe Diem on Bang Tao Beach, and Cafe Del Mar on Kamala Beach, but our list includes a lot of little hidden beach clubs at fair prices. Read more about Beach Clubs

Carpe Diem Beach Club on Bang Tao Beach, Phuket, Thailand

11. Spa and Massages

Best Spas in Phuket

Thailand is a massage and well-being destination famous around the world. Almost every hotel has a spa, and massages are available everywhere, even on the beach! The prices start around 300 baht for a simple Thai massage to extravagant half-day packages in luxury resorts. Everyone should try, especially to recover from jet lag, help with a sunburn, make use of a rainy day or treat themselves to a relaxing experience.

Keep in mind that a spa is one of the most popular things to do in Phuket when it rains, so book with your spa or hotel in the morning to beat the queue!

12. James Bond Island

james bond island rock 1

James Bond Island is one of those bucket list items many people want to tick off their list of Things to Do in Phuket. There are many positive and negative opinions about James Bond Island, and most are justified. Before that old 1974 James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun with Roger Moore and Christopher Lee (remember Count Dracula? or Saruman in Lord of the Rings?), no one talked about this island. The movie wasn’t even good (45% on Rotten Tomatoes). Read more about James Bond Island

How to get there : Check with your hotel or a local agent. This tour can usually be booked the day before. When to get there : all year round

13. Koh Panyi

Koh Panyi

Koh Panyi is a surprisingly small fishermen’s village built entirely on stilts in the middle of Phang Nga Bay . What used to be a remote place is now more of a tourist attraction, but it is still a real village with a sizeable Muslim community, a mosque and a school. You can explore the narrow ‘streets’ and see the water through the crevices of the floor, do some local shopping and enjoy a tasty seafood lunch.

Take a longtail boat early to reach there before tourists arrive, and you get a completely different feel for the place. Continue to James Bond Island if you feel like seeing the shooting set of this old movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. Read more about Koh Panyi

Koh Panyi Village (Koh Panyee)

How to get there : almost every tour agent offers this tour with James Bond Island. You could also drive to one of the many Phang Nga piers and ride a longtail boat.

When to get there : There are no waves all year round, as Phang Nga is a bay.

14. Enjoy Sunset Drinks and Dinner

Phuket Best Sunset Bars

When weather permits, Phuket sunsets can be pretty impressive, especially during the low season, because clouds reflect the red hues in remarkable ways. You will be able to enjoy sunsets from most of the beaches on the West Coast, but the best way is to share the moment with a cold drink in hand! Here is a list of sunset spots we love in Phuket.

Akoya rooftop bar on Ao Yon Beach in Phuket Island

15. Plane Spotting on Mai Khao Beach

Plane landing over the beach at Phuket Airport

Plane Spotting has become a viral phenomenon since the day it became forbidden. The more it’s forbidden, the more people go there, and this once-deserted beach has become a permanent Instagram playground. And why not? Seeing these enormous flying machines approaching from far away and getting closer to you in a roar is jaw-dropping. As they are about to land, they fly so low above the turquoise water; that you could almost touch their wheels! Read more about plane spotting in Phuket

How to get there : most people use their cars or bikes to get to Maikhao beach. It seems that some local agencies offer a ride there. Read how to go there by yourself.

When to go there : Please remember that planes land over the beach only during the high season (November to May) when the wind blows east to west! During the low season, planes will land from the other side, over the main road. This is just an indication; that wind can change according to the weather.

Can you go? : Technically, it is not allowed to be under the plane’s path, but no one seems to care.

16. Andamanda Phuket Water Park

Andamanda Phuket Water Park

Andamanda Phuket is an immense new water park near Phuket Town, passed Kathu when coming from Patong Beach. This massive park covers a staggering 100,000 sq.m. and 25 attractions, including many impressive waterslides, a 10,000 sq.m. swimming area with artificial waves and the longest lazy river in southeast Asia.

Location : Kathu

17. Go on an Instagram Photo Spree!

The island is an Instagrammer’s paradise! Between the many natural wonders, the beaches and islands, the beautiful Sino-Portuguese architecture of Old Phuket Town and the Instagram-dedicated photo playgrounds, Instagrammers will find endless opportunities to shine. 18. Try Real Local Food!

Mor Mu Dong Restaurant

Trying local Thai food in Phuket is a must-do for any traveller visiting the island. Phuket is known for its delicious and authentic Thai cuisine, with a variety of dishes that are unique to the region and south Thailand. Trying local Thai food is also a chance to experience the local food culture by visiting night markets, street food vendors and local restaurants, but you need to know where to find these small restaurants!

With my inner foodie fully satisfied, Phuket old town is also worth visiting if only to admire the colourful buildings or stop by a quirky cafe , latte in hand to watch the people pass by. The area has a friendly vibe which we loved and the locals were more than welcoming and happy for us to be there and share in their culture.

That said, there are also Western influences mixed in such as modern, trendy cafes and boho shops owned by foreigners. However, there was a good mix and everything appeared to work symbiotically.

Phuket offers similar classes, where you can learn to cook traditional Thai dishes, including curries, soups, and stir-fries. The classes are usually led by experienced chefs and are suitable for all skill levels.

✅ Not only will you learn new recipes, but you’ll also gain insight into the local food culture: Phuket Thai Cooking Class

11. Explore a Film Setting from the popular “The Beach”

A really popular thing to do in Phuket town is to visit the On On Hotel, located on Phang Nga Road in the historic district. If you’re a fan of the movie “The Beach”, you’ll be thrilled to know it’s one of the filming locations!

The hotel is where one of the movie’s most memorable scenes was filmed, despite being portrayed as a hotel in Bangkok. The actual location is the charming and affordable hotel in Phuket Old Town.

✅ Good to know: The hotel underwent renovations in 2013, but it still maintains its original character while offering budget-friendly accommodations for guests.

12. Visit The Weekend Night Market

This place is great! If you’re looking for a lively and vibrant weekend experience in Phuket, you should check out the weekend market just outside of Phuket town. The market is a sprawling collection of stalls selling everything from clothing and accessories to souvenirs and street food.

And even though it’s a little out of Phuket old town it’s still within walking distance, it took us around 35 minutes to get there along the main street which is paved.

The food stalls were our favourite. There’s so much choice that we ended up trying loads of unique dishes including a lot of naughty deep-fired goodies. This is where we tried the obligatory fried bugs including crickets and grubs…

We also went full steam on the deep-fried sandwiches, potato spiral sticks, crunchy chicken, Asian pizza and local beer… this sounds so bad! But, it was delicious.

The atmosphere is bustling and festive , with live music and cultural performances adding to the excitement. It’s a great place to soak up the local culture, mingle with locals and try some delicious Thai street food.

📍 Where and Where? It takes place e very Saturday and Sunday from late afternoon until late at night . Don’t forget to bring your bargaining skills, as haggling is expected and can make for a fun shopping experience!

13. Go Shopping in Phuket Town

You’ll be pleased to hear that Phuket Old Town has plenty to offer in the way of shopping. One of the most popular shopping destinations is the Jungceylan Shopping Centre , which features a range of international and local brands, as well as souvenir shops.

But, I would say head for a more traditional shopping experience. You can wander around the charming old streets of the city and discover independent stores selling crafts, spices, and antiquities. It makes for a much better experience!

Shopping in Phuket town is a fun thing to do!

However, whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of street markets or the luxury of upmarket boutiques, you’ll find something to suit your taste when it comes to shopping in Phuket Town

Private Tour or Join a Tour Group?

The big difference between the two is always cost; on a private tour, you get transport to yourselves and the undivided attention of your guide and driver. For a family group, you may find your pricing works out very similar to having a private tour mini-bus as joining a group.

On the contrary, it becomes a lot more expensive when you’re talking about heading out to any of the islands on a catamaran, for example. Generally speaking, when you book these tours, lots of small mini buses are sent all over Phuket to fetch passengers, and then you all congregate at a pier to join a larger group on the boat.

If you book a private catamaran just for your family, expect this to be substantially more costly than joining a group.

Visiting off-peak, you never know! You may still be the only ones on board if passenger numbers are low that day, so it will feel like a private tour, without the price tag!

Best Phuket Day Trip Destinations – On Phuket Island

If you don’t fancy popping on a boat, all of these day tours are easy to reach by road (traffic dependent!) from your accommodation in Phuket.

1. Phuket Old Town Tour

Phuket Old Town is located in the heart of Phuket City and is known for its colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings. You can take a walking tour of the town and visit the many cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops.

Taking a walking tour is highly recommended as you’ll gather a lot more about the historical significance of the buildings with a local guide. You can choose the length of your tour and whether you only want to learn about the history or indulge in some local delicacies that the area is famous for.

In our experience, these are not great to join with young kids; we’d recommend a private tour or self touring the Old Town if you are with littles, for the sake of their enjoyment and others in the group.

We have a more detailed guide to the sites of Phuket Old Town here .

Recommended tours:

2. Wat Chalong

Wat Chalong is a famous Buddhist temple located in the southern part of Phuket. The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists.

A visit will take around one hour, which is often incorporated with other stops in the southern part of the island, including a visit to Big Buddha .

Recommended tours that include a stop at Wat Chalong:

3. Sirinat National Park

Sirinat National Park (formerly Nai Yang National Park) is a small protected area located on the northwest coast of Phuket. The park is home to several beautiful beaches, including Mai Khao Beach, one of Thailand’s longest beaches .

As it is a national park, the entrance fee is 200 THB per adult and 100 THB for kids.

4. Bang Pae Waterfall

Bang Pae Waterfall is a small but beautiful waterfall located in the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary in the northeast of Phuket. You can take a short hike to the waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pool. There’s also the smaller Ton Sai Waterfall within the protected area.

Find more about Phuket’s best waterfalls here.

The Khao Prae Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Khao Pra Theaw Non-Hunting Area) has also become well known for its Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (Open by appointment only; hours and how to book are unclear since COVID, try reaching out at [email protected] ).

5. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a great day trip for animal lovers. It is a retirement home for elephants rescued from the tourism industry. You can spend the day with the elephants and learn about their behaviour and conservation efforts.

Other Recommendations :

NB – we have included links to available tours here that we belive are connected with ethical sanctuaries, but we encourage you to do your own research into which elephant sancturaies in Phuket are upholding the highest ethical standards ; sadly, despite labelling, not all sanctuaries are upholding the highest standards – this includes NO BATHING with elephants.

6. Khao Lak

Khao Lak is a quiet town located north of Phuket, across the Sarasin Bridge. The town is known for its beautiful beaches and nearby waterfalls. You can take a day trip to Khao Lak to relax on the beach and visit the national park.

7. Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are a popular destination for day trips from Phuket. The islands are known for their stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and limestone cliffs. You can take a speedboat or ferry to explore the islands and enjoy activities like snorkelling, diving, and kayaking.

Our complete guide to visiting Phi Phi Islands is coming soon!

Note that the speed boat to Phi Phi may be much quicker than a ferry but be mindful of just how painful a speed boat journey can be! Definitely not recommended if you’re pregnant or suffer from back problems; take your time on a slower boat for more comfortable journey.

8. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is a beautiful bay with limestone cliffs and caves. You can take a boat tour to explore the bay and visit the famous James Bond Island and the floating village of Koh Panyee. 9. Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are a group of islands located in the Andaman Sea. The islands are known for their beautiful beaches and coral reefs, making them a great spot for snorkelling and diving – some of the best in the world!

Note the Similan Islands sit quite some distance away from Phuket, and access is by speedboat; as before with the Phi Phi tours, be aware this is not recommended if you are pregnant or you suffer from back problems. You will set off quite early in the morning to make the most of daylight hours and see as many of the small bays and beaches as possible.

Note that the Similan Islands are closed to tourism during the low season to allow for rehabilitation.

One Day in Phuket Old Town Itinerary for a Perfect Day in Phuket Old City, Southern Thailand

This post may contain paid links. If you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn a commission.

Our one day in Phuket Old Town itinerary provides a plan for a perfect day in the capital of the Southern Thai island, kicking off with a quintessential Old Town breakfast – or two – and taking you through snacks and lunch, punctuated by market walks and museum visits, and ending with a must-do dinner.

Most travellers to the island of Phuket in Southern Thailand are there for the beach and water-based activities. Too few see it as the food destination that we do, spending most of their time on the beach and at resort restaurants and bars. And who can blame them? Phuket is home to some of Thailand’s best beach resorts.

If visitors to Phuket do make it into the island’s capital, they tend to do little more than linger at the weekend market in the late afternoon and then stay on for dinner. We reckon Phuket Old Town with its wonderful Sino-Portuguese architecture, distinct Peranakan culture, and delicious Phuket-style Thai cuisine warrants a full day of your time and this is how we think you should spend it.

Here’s our one day in Phuket Old Town itinerary to guide you to the must-do experiences in the island capital. A warning: many of them involve food!

One Day in Phuket Old Town Itinerary for a Perfect Day in Phuket’s Capital

Where to stay in phuket old town.

If you’re only allowing one day in Phuket Old Town, we suggest scheduling it at the beginning of your Phuket trip and staying a night in Phuket Town so you don’t waste a second. When you need to retreat from the heat or require a short siesta, it means you won’t have far to go for a quick nap or cool-down.

Check into one of the charming boutique hotels in Phuket Town in heritage buildings, such as The Memory at On On or Casa Blanca . Built in 1929, The Memory at On On is one of Phuket’s oldest hotels. It starred as the seedy backpackers in the movie The Beach before extensive renovations in 2013.

Book one of the lovely mid-range rooms with balcony, although note that most of the charm lies in the public spaces, which are furnished with vintage pieces, such as antique wireless radios, and the light-filled courtyards and tranquil nooks.

Casa Blanca is a comfortable boutique hotel with a feminine sensibility – pastel colours, pretty furnishings, fresh flowers – and a well-travelled, English-speaking Thai owner who is a passionate baker and foodie and generous with dining tips. Both are centrally located and handy to markets, shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars.

And when you are ready for some sun and sand, see the Phuket beach resorts we recommend.

Breakfast In Phuket Old Town

With only one day in Phuket Old Town, breakfast must be one of the quintessential Phuket Town breakfasts, khanom jeen or dim sum (siao boi). Whatever you decide on, you’ll have to wake early to join the locals for breakfast, which starts around 6am and is done by 8am or 9am.

For khanom jeen – freshly made, lightly fermented rice noodles served with curries, aromatic fresh herbs, and raw and steamed vegetables – make a beeline to Pa Mai Kanom Jeen on Satun Road (if it’s closed, try Mae Ting Kanom Jeen up the street toward Thungkar Road).

If there’s a lady behind the table laden with pots of rich curries (along with plates of fried chicken, grilled fish and hor mok, a steamed fish curry), let her know what curry you fancy and she’ll ladle it onto a dish of noodles. Otherwise, snag a table and a waitress will take your order.

For dim sum, try century-old Juan Hiang (18 Phoonpon Rd), where owner Yaowamal Woaranopakul offers some 50 different types of siao boi, including an array of seafood and pork dumplings, fluffy steamed buns, deep fried snacks, fried tofu, vegetables, and Portuguese egg tarts.

Grab a table then wait for staff to drop by with small plates of dim sum. Accept what you think looks good, politely decline what doesn’t, and wave when you’re ready for more.

Coffee In Phuket Old Town

Kickstart your one day in Phuket Old Town with coffee at Kopitiam by Wilai. Phuket Old Town has much in common with the ports of Penang, Malacca and Singapore due to the historic maritime trading routes. One aspect of everyday culture they share is the ‘kopitiam’, a type of old-school Chinese coffee shop originally established by Hokkien immigrants. ‘Kopi’ is Malay for coffee and ‘tiam’ is Hokkien for ‘shop’.

Many of Phuket’s Thai-Chinese locals are of Hokkien heritage, which explains the red Chinese signs and the Chinese temples peppered around town. Furnished with antiques and bric-a-brac, with old black and white photos on the walls, Kopitiam by Wilai is popular with Thai tourists as much as foreigners, for its old-world atmosphere and traditional Thai coffee, made with robusta beans, and served with sweet, creamy condensed milk. Opt for the iced coffee if it’s a steamy day.

A Morning In Phuket Old Town

With only one day in Phuket Old Town you’ll only have time for a few sights. Start exploring the streets and then when the heat gets too much for you retreat indoors. For us, mornings in a Thai town mean market time.

In the centre of Phuket Town, Central Market (Ranong Road) is the main market in a big modern building, however, cross the road and head down Soi Phisai Sapphakit and you’ll find a small but busy market with stalls selling fresh farm produce, much of which comes from around the island, along with perfumed herbs, aromatic spices, pungent chilli relishes, fermented fish pastes, and dry and smoked fish.

Vehicles come and go, delivering and collecting goods, so there’s always something happening. If the food has made you peckish, make your way to lunch…

Lunch In Phuket Old Town

Elsewhere on the island, Thai food means food from central Thailand or the north-eastern Isaan region, which is different to Phuket cuisine , which has been influenced by historical connections to China and Malaysia, resulting in Peranakan or Baba Nyonya cuisine.

So with only one day in Phuket Old Town we recommend tasting Phuket-style street food at Lock Tien Food Court (corner Dibuk and Yaowarat Roads), a 1950s-era hawker centre. The ten or so stalls have been operated for about five decades by the same families dishing up their Phuket specialties.

Start with the Phuket-style popiah, char siu pork, grated turnips, bean sprouts, and peanuts rolled up in wheat-flour wraps roll and doused in a sweet and sour tamarind sauce, which hailed from China’s Fujian province but are also found in Singapore and Malaysia.

Then order the “ancient noodles” listed on the laminated menu: mee hoon pah chang, fried noodles with pork bone soup, and mee nam Hokkien, Hokkien-style prawn noodles.

If you had more than one day in Phuket Old Town, we’d also be recommending this Phuket Old Town 15-taster food tour for a comprehensive introduction to Phuket’s culinary history and culture.

Afternoon In Phuket Old Town

If it’s too hot for you, it might be time for that siesta back at the hotel. However, as you only have one day in Phuket Old Town, if you can cope with the heat walk off lunch and work up an appetite for your next meal on a wander around Phuket Old Town, dropping into a temple or a museum or three when you’re in need of some air-conditioning.

Scattered across Phuket Old Town are ornate incense-filled Chinese temples and grand Sino-Portuguese mansions built from the wealth of Phuket’s tin-mining boom and long history of trade. Many of them are now dilapidated with peeling paint, others transformed into fascinating museums.

Make your priorities the Thai Hua Museum , the new Phuket Peranakan Museum and Phuket Baba Museum, all of which reveal different aspects of Phuket’s intriguing history.

Early Evening In Phuket Old Town

With only one day in Phuket Old Town, if you’re here on a Thursday or Friday, you must make a beeline for the casual, cool little Indy Market (beside Limelight Avenue, Dibuk Road; 4-10pm), where young Thai designers, artists and makers sell handmade crafts, art, jewellery and accessories, along with vintage clothes and kitschy-cool gifts and souvenirs.

You can also get a tattoo, mani-pedi or your portrait sketched. Stalls serve up street food snacks, from burgers and barbecue chicken to som tam and ‘Thai tacos’ (khanom buang). There’s live music and small bars selling coconut water, sugar cane juice, cold beers, and cocktails.

Sundowners In Phuket Old Town

Unpretentious Quip Sky Bar (Quip B&B, 5th Floor, near corner of Phuket and Rasada Roads; 4pm-midnight) is the spot to head for sundowners if you only have only one day in Phuket Old Town.

It was the Old Town’s first rooftop bar and it remains popular with artsy young local Thais as much as travellers of all types and it’s easy to see why once you’re reclined on cushions sipping something cold as you watch the sun set over the Old City rooftops.

Dinner In Phuket Old Town

With only one day in Phuket Old Town, dinner must be at  Raya (48 Dibuk Rd) in a grand yet faded century-old Sino-Portuguese mansion house with stained walls with peeling paint and worn antique floor tiles.

Arguably serving up Phuket’s finest local food, Raya is still ran by the elderly daughter of the original owners, who checks every plate as it leaves the kitchen – if she’s not working the woks herself of course.

Order the nam prik goong seab (spicy prawn chilli dip), pad bai liang (stir fried bai laing leaves), moo hong (stewed pork belly), and the fiery gang poo bai chaplu (crab meat curry with betel leaves).

If you can’t get into Raya, head to One Chun restaurant (48/1 Thepkasattri Road, near the corner of Dibuk Road), which is popular with Thai tourists and also does a great gaeng poo, although it doesn’t have the lethal heat of Raya’s, restaurant’s gaeng poo, which Central Thais sometimes struggle to eat.

Spread across a couple of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, it’s delightfully decorated with retro pieces, including old suitcases and record players, antique clocks, and even a vintage film projector. If downstairs looks full, there are often tables free in the courtyard garden.

The very first thing on your one-day itinerary of Phuket Old Town is to pay a visit to the sacred Shrine of the Serene Light. This temple is located on Phang Nga Road in the old town of Phuket. Also known as Sang Tham Shrine, the sacred Chinese temple is one of the must-visit places in Phuket Old Town.

Colorful entrance gate of Shrine of the Serene Light

Even though the temple is not located on the main street, a well-decorated vibrant alleyway with a traditional Chinese gate with colorful street art leads you to this hidden temple. Founded in 1891 by the descendants of the Tan Luan Jae family, the Shrine of the Serene Light used to be the finest secret site of Phuket Town at one point in time.

2. VISIT THE FAMOUS ON ON HOTEL

When you are on the famous Phang Nga road of Phuket Old Town, you cannot miss the iconic landmark of the street, which is the famous ON ON HOTEL. The ON ON Hotel is the first hotel in Phuket town. The hotel was in the spotlight when the famous Hollywood movie, “The Beach” , featuring the famous Hollywood celebrity, Leonardo DiCaprio, was shot here.

But very few know that the hotel is located in the old town of Phuket on Phang Nga Road and not in Bangkok as shown in the movie. The budget hotel got a complete facelift in the year, 2013. The architecture of On On hotel is in the Sino-Portuguese style. The hotel has become a point of interest for the tourists, and no one leaves without taking a few pictures with the iconic hotel.

3. DON’T MISS THE CLOCK TOWER BUILDING ON PHANG NGA ROAD

Intersection of Phang Nga Road in Phuket Old Town

Take a few steps ahead and you reach the unmissable and the most stunning clock tower building. Painted in a striking yellowy-mango shade, the historic building is one of the most photogenic ancient architectures. Located at the intersection of Phang Nga Road, the very distinctive features of the clock tower are the early 1990s four-storey clock tower and a traditional police-cap roof. It used to be a police station and has now been converted into a museum.

4. VISIT PERANAKANNITAT MUSEUM

 Phuket Museum

Just at the intersection of Phang Nga Road, the Phuket Museum is located. It is a must-visit place for history lovers. The tiny two-storey historical building lets you travel to old times through pictures, artifacts, and audiovisual presentation. Also known as Baba Museum, the museum is a good stop to know the history of Phuket.

5. GET AWED BY THE SINO-PORTUGUESE STYLE MANSIONS AND BUILDINGS

If you are a photographer, the Old Phuket Town is nothing less than a playground for you. It does not matter where your eyes travel, you will be stunned by the picture-perfect Sino-Portuguese style mansions and buildings. Whether you are on Phang Nga Road, Thalang Road, Krabi Road, or Dibuk road, your eyes will pop up each time you capture the colorful traditional architecture in Sino-Portuguese style.

I felt as if I was lost in a wonderland. The intricate details, vivid colors, tiny perforated wooden windows, and the typical archways immediately catch your eye. A mixture of Chinese and European styles has influenced the architectural style of these ancient buildings which were built more than one hundred years ago. They are mostly single or two-storied buildings with a wider area inside.

6. VISIT BANN 92 CAFÉ

Bann 92 café in Phuket Old Town

This is one of the beautiful cafes on Thalang road. The classic Bann 92 café is one of the Instagram-able spots which takes you back to a bygone time. The vintage furniture, exotic artifacts, traditional kitchen, and picture-worthy corners make it worth a visit.

Bann 92 café in Phuket Old Town

This is a coffee shop on Thalang Road, but I had the traditional lunch prepared by the Baba community. The best part of the lunch was that it was served in steel tiffin boxes which reminded me of my school days. Set-up for the delicious lunch was in their backyard garden where I was entertained by a differently-abled talented musician who was playing Koto, a Japanese string musical instrument.

This is the most happening road in old Phuket town which has the striking Sino-Portuguese style buildings, amazing cafes, must-visit restaurants, and heritage buildings turned into shops.

7. LOCAL SHOPPING IN THE OLD TOWN OF PHUKET

Shopping in Phuket Old Town

You cannot miss shopping in the old town of Phuket. Whether you want souvenirs, beach bags, summer clothing, exquisite artifacts, or anything for that matter, the Thalang road is the ideal spot for that. This road is one of the most bustling roads among other landmarks in the old town of Phuket.

Colorful hats in Thalang Road

More than anything, it has the most striking Sino-Portuguese-style buildings, tiny cafes, popular restaurants, and heritage buildings. You will find everything here. Thalang road remains one of the busiest streets in the old town of Phuket.

8. CAPTURE THE STREET ARTS

Beautiful Street art in Phuket Old Town

You can’t miss the outstanding street wall arts in Old Phuket Town. One of the most prominent ones is the Alex Face mural graffiti on Soi Romanee Road. The ‘Red Turtle Cake’ mural by Alex Face is probably the most striking one.

Famous Turtle Street art by Alex Face in Phuket Old Town

The artwork often features a childlike character wearing an animal costume and an extra eye. Her name is Mardi. The artist believes that the third eye on Mardi represents a world that can only be seen with an extra eye.

On Phang Nga Road, you will come across an array of colorful Chinese street arts, especially on both sides of the alleyway to the shrine of the Serene Light. One of my favorites is the hand puppet performances to entertain the deities.

Also, the giant lobster and street art with a girl sitting on a ‘Sia Nah’ or Tiffin Carrier are unmissable on Phang Nga Road. I loved the fact that how the entire Phuket Old Town is revamped. It allows tourists to get a feel of an old world in the most pulsating way.

9. TRY STREET FOOD

Streetfood in Phuket Old Town

In your one-day Phuket Old Town itinerary, you must include relishing the best street food. There are lots of cool cafes and heritage buildings that are turned into restaurants where you get the best of Thai cuisine. But the fun of having food on the street is beyond comparison.

While doing the walking tour in Phuket Old Town, look for street food vendors who sell mouth-watering fresh Thai food to suit your palate. If you are a non-vegetarian, you get plenty of food options on the streets.

10. DON’T MISS THE WALKING STREET NIGHT MARKET ON THALANG ROAD

day trips from phuket old town

Last but not the least, after exploring the streets of Phuket Old Town, relishing the best Thai food, experiencing museums, and capturing the street arts, it is time to visit the most famous walking street on Thalang road. Visit this night street market and feel the excitement of seeing a completely different side of Thalang road.

Street artist in Phuket Old Town

The entire street looks like a shopping carnival. Whether you want to have a variety of street food, shopping for home décor, exotic souvenirs, or want to enjoy some great music, you will find everything here. This market is open only on Sunda y. Don’t miss some of the best local handicraft and gift stalls on the buzzing street.

Street Shopping Phuket Old Town

The best part of the walking street is that you can bargain and buy. Mostly local artisans and entrepreneurs come here to sell their products.

day trips from phuket old town

What amazed me at the walking street night market is that even though it becomes crowded, it is not chaotic. Everything is quite organized. You will also find local artists drawing on the street or painting. The lively environment of the walking street needs to be experienced in Phuket. This is highly recommended.

I totally agree with your idea of doing research in renovating your home. Now here’s what I can suggest, DIY became so popular nowadays, lots of influencers and content creator spread information about DIY. Home renovations can be so costly, but with proper research and following how others done it, it should not be that difficult. decor

I must admit that we spent most of our visit to Phuket close to the water. With a great visit one time to the tasty night market. It looks like Old Town Phuket is a spot we will have to plan to enjoy on a return visit. I love all the colour everywhere. As photographers, the town will definitely be a playground for us! Especially with that great variety of street art.

Sherianne

I would definitely want to walk around Phuket old town when in the area. During the day to see the architecture, it is so colorful, and at night for the walking street night market, it looks amazing!

Wonderful photos! The infrastructural designs in Phuket Old Town are particularly striking, thanks to the vibrant color combinations and distinct forms. When I visit Phuket, I will undoubtedly pay a visit to the Shrine of the Serene Light. Any viewpoint you take here is picture-perfect, in my opinion! I’m also a fan of the thought-provoking street art!

Puloma Bhattacharya

Old town Phuket is one of the popular tourist destinations with so much to capture in the heart of the city. The shrine of the serene light, Sino-Portuguese style homes lining the streets, the authentic Bann 92 café, vibrant street art, shopping stalls, to the delicious Thai food, everything wraps up the true essence of Thailand.

Jackie

You are absolutely right about tourism focusing on the beautiful beaches in Phuket. I had not idea there was such a vibrant old town to be enjoyed here. day trips from phuket old town

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, old phuket town: a travel guide to the hidden gem of phuket.

I had been to Phuket many times in the past, but like most tourists, I’ve always been focused on the beach and white sand life. It wasn’t until my latest trip to Phuket , that I finally had the chance to stop by and stay in Old Phuket Town .

But to tell you the truth, I actually almost didn’t make it to Old Phuket Town again on this trip. Old Phuket Town wasn’t even on my original Phuket itinerary . It was only when my hotel in Karon Beach canceled my reservation very last minute that I finally looked into shifting my travel plan to Old Phuket Town, at the recommendation of my friend Yi Wei. I liked what I read online, so I booked a hotel at Old Phuket Town, and the rest, as they say, was history.

How many days should I stay in Old Phuket Town?

Old Phuket Town isn’t a large area. You can see most things the town has to offer in 2 days . If you’re quick and short on time, even one day is also manageable!

How to get around Old Phuket Town

Again, Old Phuket Town is not a big area and can be explored easily on foot. We pretty much walked around everywhere during our stay here. The only thing that might deter you from walking is the weather in Phuket, which could get pretty hot. But I find that by around 4 pm, the sun isn’t as strong anymore and it’s fine to walk outside.

What to do at Old Phuket Town

Having spent two days here, I can’t tell you how glad I was to have listened to my friend’s recommendation! Old Phuket Town exceeded my expectations in many ways. I feel like we truly stumbled into an underrated gem of Thailand.

When we think of Phuket, the immediate picture that came to mind is blue water and white sand beach. I definitely didn’t expect to learn so much history, culture and see the colorful shophouses in Phuket! There were moments where I forgot I was actually in Phuket instead of Penang .

So please, allow me to tell you why I loved my stay at Old Phuket Town so much in this post!

1. Stay at “The Memory at On On” hotel

Phuket gained its popularity most notably after the movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed here. Although the most popular shoot location is undoubtedly Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island (now closed to the public thanks to over-touristing which has killed the corals in the bay), there is actually one shoot location in Old Phuket Town!

Remember the scene when Leo came into a dingy backpack hostel at the beginning of the movie, which was supposed to be on Khao San road in Bangkok? Well, the truth is, that hostel is actually in Phuket Town and it’s no other than On On Hotel .

The Memory at On On Hotel

But fret not – if the rugged backpacking lifestyle isn’t for you, On On Hotel has gone through a change of ownership and major renovation in 2012.

Renamed to The Memory at On On Hotel , it’s no longer the dingy backpacker hostel it once was. It is now a boutique hotel that preserves most of its history and charming Sino-Portuguese architecture. Although it has been around since 1929, the new On On Hotel provides a very comfortable stay at a reasonable price.

The Memory at On On Hotel

Oh, and the location of this hotel is really good. It’s on the historical block of Old Phuket Town and pretty much walking distance to all the attractions!

Book your stay at The Memory at On On Hotel here ! Rooms start at 1,400 Baht (US$44) a night. I stayed in the standard room, the last room available when I was there, but totally would have splurged on deluxe if it was available!

PS: The room Leo stayed in was rumored to be Room 204, which has been preserved to the likeness of the scene of the movie and can be booked for a special stay. We stayed in Room 202 during our stay, right next door to the room! 😀

Alternative Hotel: If On On Hotel is not available, Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel is also a great option. It occupies the Sino-Portuguese style house and is more updated than On On Hotel.

2. Learn About the History of Phuket

Before Phuket became known for its beach and oceanside resorts, Phuket thrived in the 17th century for its wealth in tin, which attracted interest from European and Chinese traders. The Chinese, particularly from Fujian province, immigrated to Phuket to work in tin mining.

Some of these Fujian immigrants stayed in Thailand and married local Thais, which leads to the distinct Thai-Chinese culture that we can see in Old Phuket Town today. This Thai-Chinese mix of heritage is known as “Baba” – similar to Peranakans in Malaysia and Singapore. They even have Tau Sar Piah here!

Shrine of The Serene Light in Old Town Phuket

As someone who was born and raised in Indonesia in a Chinese-descent family, although our heritage is not as highly celebrated in Indonesia, I felt a sense of familiarity and nostalgia in this town. The wooden furniture, shop houses, clothes, and even little things like the kitchen kettle reminded me of my late grandparents and their house which I frequently visited during my childhood.

The Memory at On On Hotel

You can learn more about the island’s history by visiting these sites in Old Phuket Town:

  • Thai Hua Museum – Costs 200 Baht to enter. A decent size museum with some explanation on the Baba heritage and Phuket during the tin mining days.
  • Chinpracha House – Costs 150 Baht to enter. A very nicely preserved Sino-Portuguese house with wooden furniture imported from China reminds me a lot of my grandparents’ house. You can explore the first floor.
  • Phuket Baba & Peranakanittat Museum – Free admission, but a very small museum.
  • Shrine of The Serene Light – Free admission

3. Find the Beautiful Shop Houses and Murals in Old Town Phuket

Old Phuket town is a small area you can walk around in about an hour, but definitely take it slow and you might just find all the details and hidden gems. I recommend walking down Thalang Road, Phangnga Road, and Soi Romanee for a beautiful photo walk opportunity. It matches up to the vibe you can find in Singapore and Penang .

Soi Romanee in Old Phuket Town

4. Eat Tasty Thai Food

What’s a trip to Thailand without eating their amazing food? In Old Phuket Town, aside from the usual Thai dishes, you can also find dishes that exhibit Chinese influences from the Thai Baba heritage.

Tu Kab Khao in Old Phuket Town

Where to eat in Old Phuket Town

Here are my favorite restaurants in Old Phuket Town:

  • China Inn – The name is misleading, because this is actually a restaurant, not a hotel! You must try the Braised Pork with Chinese Spices. Their Masaman Curry was also amazing!
  • Tu Kab Khao Restaurant – This restaurant received Plate Michelin, which rewards a restaurant that simply serves good food. And I agree with them! One of my fav dishes here is THE most simple dish – the wide rice noodle cooked with eggs and chicken, and deep-fried fish with turmeric. Reminds me of my mom’s home cooking!
  • One Chun – A simple, cozy, and very authentic Thai restaurant. Famous for their crab dishes, especially the crab yellow curry with rice noodles. Comes with a lot of fresh crab meat for 370 Baht.
  • Four Praya Chicken Rice Street Food – This unassuming street food stall pops up on the corner of Yaowarat Road and Phang Nga Road every afternoon around 4-5 pm and runs late at night past 9 pm. For 60 Baht, you can choose to get pork roast rice, chicken rice, crispy pork rice, or a mix of all three. It’s similar to the roast meat and Hainanese chicken rice dish you can get in Singapore, but the broth is spiced with a unique Thai touch – a hint of lemongrass flavor!

5. Go Cafe Hopping

There is definitely a thriving cafe scene in Old Phuket Town. You can find them in all of the major streets, and they are never full (for some reason) so you’ll always find a table.

Best part? Each cafe is equipped with 5G wi-fi, so you can totally chill with your laptop without feeling guilty should you want to. I definitely did a lot of this (and wrote parts of this post in said cafes) when the weather is too hot to be walking around outside.

Bookhemian in Old Phuket Town

My favorite cafes in Old Phuket Town are:

  • Bookhemian – Super cute trendy cafe, focused on art and photography books. There is a lot of space out in the back too.
  • Chino Cafe – Small cafe, but decent food and very nice staff
  • Gallery Cafe – They serve a good selection of international breakfast here. You know, the ones with avocadoes and eggs and such. Great space to park yourself for a while too.
  • Old Phuket Coffee Station – A quaint-looking coffee shop at the corner of Thalang Road. You won’t miss it with their display of vintage radios on the wall.

6. Shop Vintage and Local Artist Creations

While walking around the Old Phuket Town area, you won’t be short of options for shopping. There are plenty of second-hand books, traditional ceramics shops, Batik shops, and locally-made jewelry, just to name a few.

Old Phuket Town Ceramics Shop

Aside from the shops on the main street, I recommend stopping by the following places:

  • Chim Jae Walking Street
  • Phuket Weekend Market

7. Relax with a Thai Massage

A stop at Kim’s Massage is a must while in Old Phuket Town, especially after a tiring day of exploring. Their usual 1 hour Thai Massage runs for 300 Baht, but there are 1.5 to 2-hour options, as well as spa packages like body scrub and facial. I got the Foot & Face package which runs for 2 hours and consists of a honey cucumber facial (great for sunburn they say) followed by a foot, hand, and shoulder massage. It was glorious.

Another thing I loved is the decor of the place. The black and white with hints of gold just look so trendy and the addition of a naturally-lit green garden in the middle of the space is very calming.

I went back pretty much every day that I stayed here.

8. Nightlife at Old Phuket Town

Once the sun sets at Old Phuket Town, it is undoubtedly way quieter than the bays on the west side of the island. You won’t find pumping dance music, but you can find some chill cocktail bars and live bands in a few places, mostly frequented by locals.

So what do you think…? Will you be making a stop at Old Phuket Town when you’re on the island? Let me know in the comment below!

No time to spare? If you can’t stay overnight in Old Phuket Time, but still have a free half day, you can go on this Phuket Town Heritage Walk Tour . If you are checking out more of Phuket, check out my Things to do in Phuket blog post!

Hi Melissa,

May I if there are buses or van-for-hire from Phuket Old Town to the Phuket Airport ? And may I know of the “timings” please?

Thanks a million.

  • November 5, 2023

I just returned from a week split between Patong & Phuket Town.

The Phuket Town -> Airport public bus depot is about 400-500m east of the Old Town – http://www.airportbusphuket.com/timetable.php – will cost 100 B.

Another option, highly recommended to avoid over-priced arranged taxis off the street crowd is to install the bolt app onto your phone, and use it.

  • March 12, 2023

I was there today and stumbled into the On On Hotel just because it looked interesting from the outside. I knew nothing about the movie ha ha, although I did watch it years ago. I don’t remember any details. I enjoyed the town enough to want to make another day trip over from Patong this week, if I can dare driving a motorbike again over the big hill.

  • October 18, 2022

Thanks for your tips, Melissa! Your info is super clear and helpful. It helped me plan my next steps in Phuket. Meow to you.

  • June 1, 2019

Thanks for writing this interesting article. How many days would your recommend I stay in Old Phuket Town? I’ll be going through Phuket and make my way to Ko Yao Yai for a yoga retreat and alocated 11 days for this trip. I may spend about 4 or 5 days for yoga but want to explore. Can you make some recommendations?

Hey Judy, 2 days in Old Town should be enough to do the bare minimum!

  • April 29, 2019

If you like Penang and Phuket, and Peranakan Heritage; you would probably love Melaka / Malacca too! A hint of Dutch heritage to be found even.

  • April 30, 2019

Hey Robert! Yeah I have been to Malacca, although it was only for a short day trip. I need to go back for sure!

  • April 20, 2019

Thank you for this wonderful article. It has changed my view about Phuket… Will definitely visit next time and follow your suggested itineraries.

Keep writing about your travels.

Phuket Old Town Walking Tour

See & Do

Phuket's old town area is easy to explore on foot, and it's small enough that you can't really go too far off course. It's the kind of place you can easily wander around in and not worry too much about getting lost.

Start at the fountain traffic circle. If you come to the Old Town area from one of the other beaches by bus, then this is the easiest place to start, since the buses will let you off in front of the new fresh market just west of the fountain.

From the fountain, head north up Yaowarat Road. If you walk up the west side of the road, with the buildings on your left, a short way up from the traffic circle you will see a narrow drive pierced through the old shophouses. If you walk up the passage - make sure a car isn't coming down it first - you'll be somewhat surprised to see a somewhat run-down old mansion , sitting in a fair sized lawn with a formal drive, all surrounded by the high walls of shophouses.

Continue up Yaowarat Road to the next four-way intersection and turn right onto Thalang Road. This street is lined with well preserved shophouses, many houses traditional businesses such as printers or even auto repair. Very few have been converted to capture the tourist trade. Halfway up the street you will come to Romanee Lane on your left. This narrow alley is lined with well maintained shophouses, some of which have been turned into antique shops and pubs.

At the end of Romanee Lane, turn right onto Dibuk Street. There isn't much to see at first, but just past the gas station are more buildings, the first of which was being restored by the Thai Hua foundation as another museum.

Continuing on Dibuk past Yaowarat, the street is lined with more beautifully kept buildings. There are several restaurants and cafés along Dibuk Road, if you're feeling peckish. Dibuk Road ends at Satun Road. Turn left onto Satun and walk down to Krabi Road. The old Governor's Mansion is on the corner on your right as you reach Krabi Road. The Pithak Chinpracha house is right next to the Governor's Mansion on Krabi Road.

If you go up Krabi Road to view the mansions, return back down the street towards Yaowarat Road. There are some more nice buildings along the street, and the Thai Hua Museum is on your left. After visiting the museum, it should be easy to find your way back to Yaowarat Road and the fountain where you started.

The Ultimate 5 Day Phuket Itinerary: Beaches, Culture & Nature

Planning a trip to Phuket, Thailand? In this post, you can find a detailed 5 Day Phuket Itinerary as written by a Thailand Travel Expert.

If you’re looking to spend time in paradise, then you need look no further than Phuket, Thailand’s largest island!

Known for its idyllic beaches, proximity to remote islands, and jaw-dropping nature, it can be difficult knowing what to add to a five day Phuket itinerary.

If you’re planning a five-day getaway to Phuket but you’re not sure where to start with your planning, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide, you can discover the ultimate 5 day itinerary for Phuket that will not only make your trip unforgettable, but will allow you to experience the very best of the island and come away feeling like you really know Phuket.

From exploring the vibrant streets of Old Phuket Town to rejuvenating with a Thai massage, there’s something for everyone on this itinerary.

So grab your sunscreen and your flip flops, it’s time to jet away to Phuket!

How many days in Phuket is enough?

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and as such, there is a lot to see and do here. The amount of time you spend here largely depends on how much beach time you wish to enjoy.

If you like beaches, but you’re planning on spending a month in Thailand and making the most of your 30 day visa, then 5 days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Phuket.

5 days allow you to get a feel for the island, experience its highlights and main attractions, as well as set aside some all-important beach time.

However, those who love a beach, can spend a full week in Phuket and not get bored.

Where to Stay in Phuket

Where you stay in Phuket is really important as it can vastly affect the vibe of your trip. Patong Beach is a famous area for nightlife, and while it has a lot to see and do, if you’re a couple or a family, you may find it too loud and overwhelming.

Kata Beach is a quiet area of Phuket that’s ideal for couples and families, since there are many resorts and restaurants, plus it’s well connected to other parts of the island with public transport.

Old Town Phuket is where you’ll find the most affordable accommodation, and is a good choice for backpackers not interested in partying – though it’s far from the beach.

Here are some of my favorite accommodation options for Phuket:

Budget – Patong Poshtel . If you love the combination of hostel prices and the modernity of a hotel, then combine them both with a Poshtel. You can find either comfortable and private capsule-style dorms or you could get a private room. It’s within walking distance of the nightlife but far enough away that you can sleep.

Mid Range – Melody Hotel, Kata Beach . The Melody is a comfortable, clean, and modern hotel in Kata Beach that’s within walking distance of the beach and the restaurant area, but nestled in a quiet street that doesn’t get the traffic noise. It has a really great pool!

Note for readers: I stayed here personally and loved it!

Luxury – Mandarava Resort and Spa, Karon Beach . This resort is tucked away in Karon Beach, which is between Kata and Patong Beach. It’s a stone’s throw from the beach and has five swimming pools with pool bars, a fitness center, and luxurious spa services.

Getting Around Phuket

It’s also worth noting that Phuket is very easy to get around since you can rent a scooter and drive anywhere in less than an hour (usually less than 30 minutes).

You can also use Grab in Phuket , which is the Asian version of Uber. Another ride-share app that’s popular is Bolt, which is slightly cheaper but has fewer cars and bikes.

There are public buses but they are so slow that I don’t recommend them. They may be cheap but you will be wasting your entire day on the bus.

The Ultimate 5 Day Phuket Itinerary

Phuket itinerary day 1 : beach day.

The main reason people travel to Phuket is either for beaches or nightlife, so let’s start this itinerary right by beginning with the most famous activities.

Phuket is home to many beautiful beaches, but which one you visit will largely depend on what you want to do.

If you are looking to partake in watersports such as jet skiing, parasailing, or paddleboarding, then Patong Beach is a great place to visit. The number of activities you can do there aside from lazing on the beach makes it ideal for families who have kids to entertain.

For a quiet day on the beach, head to Kata Beach or Karon Beach, which both offer pristine white sand that meets with glistening turquoise waters.

You can also find some hidden gems, such as Layan Beach, which is almost never busy, and Freedom Beach, which is tucked away in a secluded cove.

After spending a day on the beach, head to the Patong Beach area to explore the vibrant nightlife scene of Bangla Road, with its lively bars and clubs.

Phuket Itinerary Day 2: Island Hopping

The second day of this 5 day Phuket itinerary will be spent doing another iconic activity on the island – island hopping.

Phuket is well positioned near popular islands in Phang Nga Bay, such as James Bond Island, as well as the famous Phi Phi Islands, home to Maya Bay, the most beautiful beach in Thailand, and the setting for the Leonardo di Caprio movie, The Beach.

You can find tour operators all over the towns in Phuket selling island hopping tours. The two most popular tours either take you to James Bond Island and Panyee Village, a Muslim village built on stilts or explore the crystal clear waters and a natural oasis of the Phi Phi Islands.

The Island Hopping trip that you choose depends on your style – if you love beautiful nature and relaxing, then head to Phi Phi Islands. For a more culturally rich experience, visit James Bond Island.

Both island hopping trips are full day activities, so you might want to relax in the evening or watch the Phuket Simon Cabaret for an immersive cultural experience.

Here are some of my personal favorite tours:

1. Maya, Phi Phi, and Bamboo Island with Buffet Lunch – Experience the beauty of the Phi Phi Islands on a speedboat cruise from Phuket. Discover Maya Bay, view the Viking Cave, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch, and snorkel on the heart-shaped Bamboo Island.

2. James Bond Island Luxury Sunset Cruise – Experience James Bond Island on a luxury cruise equipped with a full bar, day beds, a DJ, and a dance floor. Enjoy a beautiful sunset ocean panorama while having dinner on board.

3. Simon Cabaret Show Admission Ticket with Transfer – Experience the extravaganza entertainment center of the south at the Simon Cabaret Show! Enjoy the most famous Cabaret, making the show the most exciting place to be in the Andaman Gulf.

Phuket Itinerary Day 3: Temples and Viewpoints

On the third day, take a break from the beaches and turquoise waters to get to know Phuket’s cultural side.

Head up to the iconic Big Buddha, located on Nakkerd Hill, which offers breathtaking panoramic views over the south side of the island.

After that, head over to the Wat Chalong temple complex and marvel at the golden meditation hall with gold-coated columns and ornate gold Buddha statues. The temple sits below the jungle-clad hills and offers a peaceful retreat from the loud noises you find around Patong Beach.

Another peaceful retreat on Phuket is Promthep Cape, which is located on the south side of the island. The best time to visit here is sunset when the sun descends over the Andaman Sea.

In the evening, head to Rawai Beach to enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the local restaurants there. The Sawasdee Rawai Seafood Restaurant buys its seafood from the seafood market next door, so you won’t find anywhere that serves a fresher seafood meal in Phuket!

Phuket Itinerary Day 4: The Mysteries and Hidden Gems of Old Phuket Town

A trip to Phuket would not be complete without visiting the Old Town at least once. Old Town Phuket is famous for its vibrant and colorful streets, dotted with charming Sino-Portuguese architecture.

Learn about the history and culture of Phuket at the Thai Hua Museum, and then explore the unique boutique stores, art galleries, and cafes.

It only takes around half a day to see the highlights of Old Town Phuket, so in the afternoon, you can head to another beach for relaxation and swimming.

If you’re not worn out from wandering around the Old Town, how about treating yourself to a Thai massage in the evening?

Thai massage is not like any ordinary massage and isn’t the luxury experience in Phuket you might be imagining. It’s a combination of sports yoga and massage, where the masseuse uses their arms, elbows, knees, and the heel of their foot to put pressure on their joints and muscles.

Although it sounds painful and uncomfortable, it’s actually very rejuvenating and has been known to help with blood circulation.

You will find Thai massage parlors all over the island, but for an authentic experience, head to So Thai Spa Phuket Ashlee in Patong Beach.

Phuket Itinerary Day 5: Nature and Adventure

On the last day of this 5 day itinerary of Phuket, take some time to explore some of Phuket’s natural landscapes.

Head north to Sirinat National Park, home to Mai Khao Beach which has nesting turtles. In the north of the park is Sai Kaew Beach, which has a beautiful mangrove forest.

If you’d prefer to seek out a hidden gem, consider spending a couple of hours splashing in the refreshing waters of Kathu Waterfall.

For those who prefer something more adventurous, consider an ATV tour through the jungles of Phuket , which is a thrilling way to experience the wild and rugged landscapes of the island.

Since it’s the last day, spend the evening immersing yourself in The Siam Niramit Phuket show, which is a performance all about Thailand’s culture through history, telling stories of religion and special Thai festivals, and features dancing and martial arts.

Alternatively, if you’re visiting on either a Monday, Thursday, or Saturday, see if you can catch a Fight Night at the Patong Boxing Stadium .

Thai Boxing, known as Muay Thai, is another centuries-old tradition in Thailand and features athletes not only from Thailand but all over the world, competing in traditional fashion.

Muay Thai is a combat sport and is not for everyone. It’s not recommended if you are not a fan of martial arts or boxing.

SUGGESTED TOURS:

1. Paradise ATV Jungle Adventure to the Big Buddha – Ride an ATV along a rugged jungle route to the Big Buddha temple on top of the Nakkerd Hills on this adventure in Phuket. Get picked up from your hotel and head to the 45-meter-tall white marble statue.

2. Siam Niramit Phuket Ticket with Optional Dinner & Transfer – Marvel at the award-winning Siam Niramit show in Phuket, highlighting Thailand’s cultural heritage. See over 100 performers in stunning costumes. Choose to enjoy a buffet dinner and an optional transfer service.

Best Tips for Visiting Phuket

Now you’ve got a plan for your 5 day itinerary for Phuket, be sure to familiarize yourself with the following words of advice…

  • Stay hydrated. No matter what time of year you visit, Phuket is known to be hot, so always carry water with you. Make sure to only drink bottled water and avoid tap water. In most cases, ice is typically made with clean water, so it’s safe to enjoy it in refreshing drinks.
  • Wear bug spray. Phuket is known for its mosquitoes, so make sure to pack mosquito repellent to protect yourself from getting bitten.
  • Carry cash. While credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops, they are not common when paying in restaurants and also for paying for tours. ATMs are readily available in popular areas but note there is a $5 USD withdrawal fee, so it’s recommended you take out a large sum so you don’t have to lose to this withdrawal fee each time. Alternatively, if you’re from the USA, get a Charles Swabb credit card which will reimburse the withdrawal fee.
  • Learn basic Thai Phrases. The locals love it when you use the local language. To say hello, use “Sawadee Kha” (hello for a girl) or “Sawadee Krap” (hello for a boy). To say thank you, say “Khop Khun-Kha” for a girl and “Khop Khun Krap” for a boy.
  • Respect the local customs. Thailand is a country with rich cultural traditions so when visiting temples, please dress modestly and cover your knees and shoulders.
  • Carry your driving license. If you rent a scooter, be sure to carry your driving license as there are lots of police checkpoints on the island.
  • Don’t be scared to try street food. When looking for places to eat, you can never go wrong with a night market which you will smell before you see. Street food is part of the way of life in Thailand and it’s clean and tasty. Just make sure whatever you eat is piping hot and it should be safe to eat.

Final Thoughts: 5 Days in Phuket Itinerary

Phuket is one of those destinations in Thailand that offers so much. Whether you’re looking for relaxation on a beautiful beach, you want to immerse yourself in the traditions and cultural roots of Thailand, or you want something thrilling and adventurous to do – you can find all this and more in Phuket.

This 5 day itinerary of Phuket has been designed to incorporate all of these things. It’s a well-rounded, immersive itinerary that will allow you to capture the essence of Phuket and get a good understanding of what it has to offer.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

102-year-old WWII vet from New York dies while traveling to D-Day ceremony in France

Robert Persichitti salutes

A 102-year-old World War II Navy veteran from New York died while traveling to France to take part in a ceremony to honor the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion that turned the tide of the war toward Allied victory.

Robert Persichitti was traveling to Normandy by ship with a veterans group, headed to the site of the historic June 6, 1944, war milestone.

On the ship, he suffered a medical episode and was airlifted to a hospital in Germany, where he died, Richard Stewart, the president of veteran organization Honor Flight Rochester, told NBC News on Thursday.

Stewart said he received the call informing him of Persichitti’s death on Friday — news no one expected as “he was active, sharp as a tack, right up [to the end].”

“His health was age appropriately very good up to 102. He had some heart problems, but he checked with his doctor, who said, ‘Absolutely go on the trip,’” Stewart said. “He passed away peacefully, he was around people.”

“The doctor found some Frank Sinatra music, which was his favorite,” Stewart added.

Persichitti, of Fairport, New York, was described as a “humble” man who “had a great life.”

His vibrant, centurylong journey began with his childhood in the Allegheny Mountains outside of Pittsburgh. He lived through the Great Depression, joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and when World War II broke out he enlisted in the Navy, spending a year in New York City attending radio school and learning Morse code.

He spent 15 months at sea assigned to the command ship USS Eldorado in the Pacific as a junior radio operator through the end of the war, serving in Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Guam, Stewart said.

He witnessed the historic moment Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945 — which was captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal and became one of the most iconic images of the war, Stars and Stripes reported.

He returned to Mount Suribachi in 2019 as part of a veterans program with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, telling a Stars and Stripes reporter at the time, “When I got on the island today, I just broke down.”

Persichitti was named to the New York state Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020.

After the war, he settled in Rochester, New York, where he spent 40 years as a shop teacher with the Rochester City School District, teaching carpentry and other technical skills to students, and where he joined Honor Flight Rochester, which takes veterans to visit D.C. memorials.

In 2015, he published the autobiography “Building an American Life.”

He also regularly visited students in Pittsford, New York, near Rochester, to speak about World War II. In April, the Pittsford Central School District shared photos of students celebrating Persichitti’s 102nd birthday.

Persichitti was an active part of Honor Flight Rochester, and most recently attended events in April and May, shaking the hands of hundreds of veterans.

“When Bob said he was going to be someplace to do an event to help spread the word with Honor Flight, he was there, he’d be in his orange shirt. He was a great volunteer for us,” Stewart said. “I think we all had every intention that if he got back from his Normandy trip on Father’s Day, he would have been there in June, shaking hands.”

Stewart noted that Persichitti’s wife had preceded him in death and he had no children.
