Christ the Redeemer | Virtual Tour | Rio de Janeiro

Christ the Redeemer

If you want to take a virtual tour of Rio De Janeiro’s iconic statue of look at the city below, wait no more. Because the views are truly amazing.

It is the world’s largest art deco statue constructed in 1992 and is visible from all over Rio. Check out Google Arts and Culture for some great photos.

Look out across the city and see Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. Sugarloaf Mountain looks very small indeed if watching from the height of the statue.

Wondering what the statue looks like at different times of day in 360 degrees? Check out Air Piano . Make sure you turn the sound on, because there is some sentimental but lovely music in background! It really adds to the atmosphere.

Polish-French sculptor created the statute Paul Landowski and the face fashioned by Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida. The engineers behind this gigantic work are Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with a Frenchman Albert Caquot.

The Story of Christ the Redeemer in Rio

Walk around this magnificent work and see the city beneath you with Google Street View technology.

It was not until after the First World War that the Roman Catholic archdiocese in Rio and a group of locals began to think about the Brazilian community’s lack of religious faith, and it was hoped that by putting a huge statue of Jesus on top of a mountain in Rio, it would revolt against what they perceived in the nation as a increasing godlessness. They asked for the monument to be built on the summit of Mount Corcovado so that it would be accessible to Christianity from anywhere and anywhere in Rio, and thereby reflect a way of “reclaiming Rio” (which at the time was Brazil’s capital city).

Christ the Redeemer Statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Please note, that this is the first episode of our 360 movie about Rio de Janeiro. Stay tuned!

Each great city has its own landmark. Eiffel Tower in Paris, The Statue of Liberty in New York, Opera house in Vienna, and majestic Kremlin towers, famous Moscow landmark. But today we want to tell you about the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) in Rio de Janeiro.

On a 700-meter high Corcovado mountain stands a giant figure of Christ, his arms are stretched out towards the city, as if blessing the land. Each year, nearly 2 million tourists and residents climb to the top of the mountain to take a photo besides the monument "for good luck."

Christ the Redeemer Statue, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Back in 1859 a Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss was struck by the majestic beauty of the mountain of Corcovado while visiting Brazil. It was he who proposed to build a monument to Christ on top of the mountain. But at that time his aspirations were hard to accomplish: first the Brazilian Court had no money, and then the monarchy was replaced by the republican government. And since the church was legally separated from the state, the idea of building a monument was forgotten.

The mountain was too striking to be empty, and in the XXth century Catholic organizations of Rio de Janeiro raised the issue again. Signatures were collected, funds were raised and, as a result, this ambitious project was able to get more than 2 million reals ($250,000), a huge amount of money for that time.

Administration of Rio de Janeiro announced a competition for the best design, which attracted a lot of contenders. The winner was Heitor da Silva Costa. He proposed that the posture of Jesus Christ with the arms stretched to the sides would symbolize a cross, and a massive pedestal would symbolize the globe. Thus, the sculpture serves to give people one thought — "Everything is in God's hands."

The final design of the monument was done by artist Carlos Oswald. By proposing a number of corrections, he rejected the idea of a globe. And then, finally, everything was ready for the monument to be built.

The construction lasted for about nine years. For several reasons, first and foremost technological ones, the creation of a giant statue in Brazil at that time was impossible, so all parts, including the frame, were manufactured in France.

Disassembled parts were delivered to Brazil, and then transported by rail to the top of Mount Corcovado. The opening of the monument took place in October 12, 1931. This date is considered to be the "birthday" of the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro and is annually celebrated with a lot of festivities.

The statue was repaired twice — in 1980 and 1990, and in 2010 it underwent some cosmetic restoration: it was vandalized with strange inscriptions, such as "when the cat's away, the mice will play" (the meaning of this act remains unclear to this day).

In 1932 and 2000 the system of nighttime illumination was upgraded. In 2007, this famous Rio de Janeiro landmark was chosen as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.

The statue can be reached by electric train or by mountain road. While being driving to the statue, you can't stay away from the window even for a second because Brazilian nature is so picturesque. Observation desks offer astonishing views of Rio de Janeiro: the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, "Sugar Loaf" mountain, the Tijuca National Park, the Atlantic Ocean and the Guanabara Bay with a town at the base of the bay. Not to sound vain, please take a look at this breathtaking sight with the help of our new 360° video.

Thanks to AYRTON360 for his help in Rio de Janeiro and for the photopanorama from the top of the statue.

How to Visit Christ the Redeemer

  • Post author: Monique Martins
  • Post last modified: February 15, 2024

One of the Seven New Wonders of the Modern World, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is a must-see attraction to those who visit Rio de Janeiro.

Standing with his arms open from the 710-meter-high tall (2,329 feet) Corcovado Mountain, and surrounded by the vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, the iconic monument is the best known Brazilian image in the world.

To make sure you get the most out of your visit, we have prepared a complete guide on how to visit Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, including all essential information and insider tips.

How to visit Christ the Redeemer

Things to do in Rio de Janeiro: Christ the Redeemer

Corcovado Mountain is located inside the Tijuca’s National Park, a rainforest within the city boundaries considered one of the world’s largest urban forests.

Every year more than 1 million people visit the famous landmark, that is also the first open-air sanctuary of the world, marveling at the most beautiful view overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Basically, there are 3 main ways to visit the attraction:

Corcovado Train

How to Visit Christ the Redeemer: Corcovado Train

Corcovado train is a centenarian eco-friendly electric train that takes you to the monument in a 20-minute journey through the Atlantic Forest (part of Tijuca’s National Park). It is the most popular and, in our opinion, the best way to get to the top.

Inaugurated in 1884 by Emperor D. Pedro II, the Corcovado railroad is the oldest tourist train route in the country.

The Corcovado train station is in the Cosme Velho neighborhood. The best way to get there is by bus (from Copacabana: line 583) or Uber/taxi.

Tickets include a round trip and the entrance to visit the monument. You can purchase at the box office or on the attraction website here . We highly recommend buying your ticket in advance to avoid queues, especially during the high season.

Carioca Tip:

The best place to sit on the way up is on the right side of the train (and on the left side downhill). Prepare the camera, and be alert to observe the hidden view in the woods and the animals of the Tijuca forest, such as birds and little monkeys.

* Trem do Corcovado:  Rua Cosme Velho, 513 Cosme Velho – Rio de Janeiro – RJ.

Website: https://www.tremdocorcovado.rio/, paineiras - corcovado official van.

Paineiras van official website

Another way to visit the monument is to go by van, the official transport of Tijuca National Park.

You can choose one of the following boarding points: embark at Praça do Lido in Copacabana, at Praça do Largo do Machado, or directly at the paineiras visitor center.

The visitor center is a stop worth visiting. They have a permanent exhibition about the history of the forest and Christ the Redeemer, as well as a souvenir store, a coffee shop and a nice restaurant with an outdoor deck designed six meters high from the woods.

All vans have air conditioning and the green seal because it has low emission of pollutants. They ascend through the Tijuca forest to the monument, stopping at the Paineiras visitor center.

Tickets also include a round trip and entrance to the monument. The value changes according to your departure location (Copacabana and Largo do Machado are the same price). You can buy it on the official website  here or at the box offices at the boarding points.

* Corcovado Paineiras : Estrada das Paineiras, S/N – Rio de Janeiro.

Christ-the-redeemer-hike-riobycariocas

Although we love hiking and the idea of visiting Christ the Redeemer by doing it is a very appealing option, we must warn you: this particular hike is neither easy nor safe.

The hike to the monument entrance begins at Parque Lage in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood. It is a challenging 4-hour hike and requires a higher level of fitness. While it starts out easy, it gets really steep, and at some points, you have to pull yourself up to the top using chains and ropes.

Secondly, we are afraid to say it is not a safe option. Unfortunately, there have been some reports of robberies on the path, so even the Cariocas are not doing it anymore, which makes it even more desert.

But if you really want to have this experience while in Rio, we highly recommend hiring a knowledgeable local tour guide to do this hike. Contact us , and we will select one of our licensed tour guides to guide you safely.

General tips for visiting Christ the Redeemer

 • Avoid peak times. Even though the monument is always crowded (after all, it is the number 1 attraction in Rio de Janeiro), we suggest you go early in the morning (before 9 am) or late afternoon (after 3:30 pm). Generally, there are few crowds, less heat, and better visibility at these times.

• Buy your tickets in advance. Regardless of the chosen option to visit the Christ, this is a golden rule: don’t wait until the last minute to buy your ticket. Even if you are visiting in the low season, you will likely find long queues there.

• Take a bottle of water with you and wear sunscreen . As you know, the temperature in Rio de Janeiro is always hot, and the humidity of the forest can bring a bit of discomfort.

• Don’t miss the chapel located under the base of the statu e. It is a small Catholic chapel dedicated to the Patroness of Brazil – Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Our Lady of Aparecida). Even if you are not religious, it’s a lovely small chapel that is usually missed by visitors.

• Be careful with pickpockets, especially during high season . Although there’s always police surveillance and a municipal guard helping visitors at the top, be aware of the crowds, especially at the train station’s entrance.

Visit to the Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer

christ the redeemer virtual tour

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is a large cathedral whose historical, cultural and spiritual importance is very high. This is at the same time a monument to the fallen in the Patriotic War of 1812, and thanks to the people of God for the defense of Russia. Today, the church is run by the Russian Orthodox Church, the cathedrals of bishops and other important events are held here.

The history

The first attempts to build the Cathedral of Christ the Savior were made during the reign of Emperor Alexander I c. honor of the victory of Russia over the army of Napoleon. Nicholas I, who succeeded Alexander I on the throne, in 1832 invited another architect, Konstantin Ton, to study and apply the traditions of ancient Russian architecture to work in the temple.

They decided to erect the temple on the site of the former Alekseevsky Convent, from where it could be seen from anywhere in Moscow, in addition, the proximity to the Kremlin would emphasize the deep connection of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior with Russian history and culture. The temple was built for almost 40 years: from 1839 to 1883.

The decision of the Soviet government in 1931 was the destruction of the temple and the expansion of the nearby territory for the needs of the state. Instead of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, it was planned to erect the Palace of the Soviets, a utopian project of the tallest building in the world with a rotating monument to V.I. Lenin on the roof. However, it was not so easy to demolish the Cathedral of Christ the Savior: only two explosions could finally destroy it.

With the extraction of groundwater, the builders completed the foundation of the Palace of the Soviets and began the construction of the framework, but the shortage of construction materials during the Great Patriotic War adjusted the plans. The base of the building was used for the construction of the “Moscow” pool throughout the year, which has become one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in the world. Despite the mixed reaction of the public, the group was unique in terms of engineering design and lasted from 1960 to 1994, and closed only due to economic difficulties in the country.

The idea of rebuilding the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in its historical place arose in the 1980s. The restorers were involved in the project, but the final version of the external decoration of the temple belongs to Zurab Tsereteli, who completed bronze medallions for kokoshniks .

Construction and decoration were symbolically completed in 2000, the beginning of the new millennium. Today the temple is the largest in Russia, it has capacity for 10,000 people.

Service hours at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow

christ the redeemer virtual tour

Divine services have been scheduled at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which can be found on the official website. In the summer, with the peak of the influx of tourists, daily services are transferred to the temple of the “Sovereign” icon of the Mother of God, and on weekends are held in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. However, before visiting the service in this temple, it is better to clarify the current situation on the site.

Temple museum

The temple houses the Patriarchal Museum of Church Art, where you can see unique objects of Orthodox culture. Among the evidence dedicated to the foundation, destruction and restoration of the temple, there are miraculously preserved exhibits: a construction mortgage plate in 1839 and elements of commemorative plaques. Admission to the museum is free, but the tour is carried out comprehensively throughout the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and only as part of the tourist groups.

On the lower level of the temple is the site “Center of the Arts. Moscow”, where exhibitions, conferences and concerts are held.

Church Council Hall

This is one of the most famous and important rooms for such events. It opened in 2008 and is part of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The lounge can accommodate up to 1250 visitors. It is decorated with frescoes and mosaic panels, the ceiling is a starry sky, and in the center there is a composition that shows the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, an important event described in the New Testament.

On both sides there are mosaics that represent two Grad: “City of Heaven” and “City of Earth.” The decoration of the four round columns are portraits of famous people of the Russian Earth: saints, statesmen, soldiers of the Lord. In addition to the luxurious interior decoration, the lounge is distinguished by comfortable armchairs and excellent technical support. An unusual device in which the auditorium is not separated from the lobby creates special acoustics and pleasant freshness.

christ the redeemer virtual tour

Even in prerevolutionary times, the observation platform in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was one of the highest in Moscow. Many famous historical photographs of the city were taken from here. With the new restored observation temple, which rises to a height of 40 meters and represents 4 platforms between the bell towers of the temple, united, you can see all the important buildings of the Soviet and modern period.

This shows how Moscow grew and changed, how picturesque are the Patriarchal and Bolshoi Kamenny bridges, the Kremlin embankment and the Moscow river.

Visiting the observation deck is often combined with a guided tour of the temple. Upload is accompanied by a guide, you can join any of the groups on a schedule. The inspection lasts 30 minutes, the cost is 400 rubles. Note that you must climb on foot. Do not worry about safety, the observation deck is fenced with a balustrade with a wrought iron grill.

Opening hours

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior receives visitors from 10 am to 5 pm every day, except Mondays. On this day, its doors are open from 1pm to 5pm.

How to get to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

One of the main orthodox attractions of the capital is near the Moscow Kremlin (a walk takes about 10 minutes), and its inspection can be a continuation of a walk through the historic center. The temple rises on the banks of the Moskva River, and the Patriarchal Bridge that leads to its other side will be an excellent place for a photo shoot.

Transportation to the temple: metro, buses and taxis.

Metro to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

If you follow the subway, you must go on the red line to Kropotkinskaya station. The subway exit is directly next to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the road to the place lasts less than five minutes. Just past the Kropotkinskaya station are Borovinskaya and the Library that bear Lenin’s name. “The trip from them will take an average of 15 minutes.
