Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling.

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones. 

Heavenly Father, I lift up my family to You today as we travel. I pray for You to watch over us and keep us from harm. Guide us and guard us during our trip and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. My favorite travel moments happen when I connect what I see with the good news in  Scripture  verses. Scripture references often increase my own understanding of various locations, especially in a foreign country. Bible verses and prayers for safe travel put our hearts and minds at ease.

Here are some of my favorite travel Bible verses organized by category for easy reference. Remember, the Lord keeps you close at all times.

1. God’s Protection

You are never without God’s strong right hand and faithful presence. Such a beautiful truth strengthens a man’s heart and a woman’s steps to be brave!

1) Luke 4:10  – “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully.” 2) Proverbs 3:23-24  – “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” 3) Psalm 121:7-8  – “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” 4) Psalm 91:2, 4   – “This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. 2. Covenant of Peace

If you are traveling to a new place that is unfamiliar to you, your peace of mind may take a hit. You may not even speak the local language. The Apostle Paul certainly understood those challenges.

5) Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)  – “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” 7) Romans 12:18  – “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” 8) Ephesians 2:14  – “For He himself is our peace.” 9) Philippians 4:7  – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” 10) Colossians 3:15  – “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” 11) 2 Thessalonians 3:16  – “Now may the Lord of  peace  himself give you  peace  at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”

3. Good Success

How we define a travel “success” varies. I deem a trip successful when three criteria are met: 

• I saw new destinations in God’s creation;
• I met new people; and
• I learned many new things that gave me a greater appreciation of God and His hand over my life.

Regardless of how you define a successful trip, here are a few words to the faith and faithful to keep close.

12) Psalm 23:3  – “He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” 13) Proverbs 16:9  – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” 14) Proverbs 3:3-5  – “Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.   So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.”

The Psalms in  God’s holy Word  contain extraordinary words of faith to guide believers. I keep Psalm 139 close at hand as I travel. When God is your comfort zone, the whole earth is your oyster. And that is no little thing!

15) Psalm 139:3-10 (NLT)  – “You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.   You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.   You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!   I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!   If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.   If I ride the wings of the dawn, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,   even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” 16) Psalm 139:3-10 (ESV)  – “You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.   Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.   You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.   Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?   If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in the depths of the earth, you are there!   If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,   even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

Praying daily keeps the  Word of God  and God’s love vibrant as you enjoy God’s creation where you travel. His Holy Spirit inside of you is the voice of the Lord directing you the right way.

17) Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity and joy to travel in this season of my life. You have kept me and my loved ones safe, and I am grateful. Allow me to cherish the life of every living thing on my journey and return me home safely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 18) Lord, I am traveling where You have opened the door. Erase any second thoughts and let me trust in You. I am safe with you. I do not travel alone for your hand is upon me. Your protection is divine. In front and behind You encircle my life. While it may feel silly asking this elementary question, even Jesus' disciples had to ask how to pray:

“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples” ( Luke 11:1 ).

A person's ability to pray is the most important skill they can have. In prayer, we learn how to communicate with God, understand him, connect with him, and reveal ourselves to him.

But we can also use prayer to help protect ourselves in all situations. We want to keep ourselves and those we love safe in every aspect of our lives. 

When traveling to new and exciting places, it’s important to pray for protection. Life can be really scary, especially when we’re in an unfamiliar place. 

We all have an instinctual desire to protect the things in our lives that we cherish most, and fortunately for us, we have extra protection to guarantee that they remain safe. 

Although we may not realize it, our Lord is always watching over us. God stays with us, even when we're on the road.

Tales of Jesus’ travels

The life Jesus lived in his time was full of great travel, and he was well aware of the importance of prayer. The Gospels claim that Jesus visited numerous sites across modern-day Israel, Palestine, Egypt, and Lebanon.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem but spent most of his childhood in Nazareth, in northern Israel. Archaeological research indicates that in the first century A.D., Nazareth was a Jewish settlement, and its inhabitants resisted Roman culture.

In several Gospel stories, Jesus appears beside or near the Sea of Galilee (also called Yam Kinneret in Hebrew). The story of Jesus walking on water took place near the Sea of Galilee, and some of Jesus' followers worked as fishermen there.

The Bible also says that Jesus spent some time in Capernaum, a town located near the Sea of Galilee. 

The Gospels claim that Christ’s miracles there included healing the paralyzed servant of a centurion (a Roman military officer). During his time in Capernaum, Jesus taught in the synagogue as well.

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem was another place Jesus visited during His lifetime. The Temple Mount was the location of the Second Temple, which was the holiest spot for Jewish devotees during Jesus' time.

A daily prayer for safe travels. Whether you travel for work or school, or are heading out on a vacation, pray for God’s protection for your travels.

Lord, you watch over my coming and going, you guard me at home and when I’m away. As I travel from home, keep watch over me. Protect me and keep me safe. Surround me with your love and comfort. I also, ask that you would protect my car Heavenly Father. That I would have no issues with my vehicle while driving and you would give me wisdom when and where I should stop to rest and get gas.

Prayer for a Safe Flight

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, – Psalm 17:8 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I ask that you would be with me as I go on this flight. I pray that you would protect me and everyone on the airplane. I ask for a peaceful flight with no weather issues or turbulence. 

Lord give me peace throughout the duration of the flight and help to put my trust in You. Hide me beneath your wing where no enemy can find me. (Psalm 17:8)

Prayer for Straightening Your Path During Travel

Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight, And the rough places smooth – Isaiah 40:4

Lord, you know all the obstacles, dangers, detours, and delays along the path I will take to my destination. 

I ask that you straighten my path so that I may have a smooth journey. Raise every valley, make every mountain low, straighten all crooked places, and make the rough places smooth (Isaiah 40:4).

Redirect me if I need to use another route, and remove any obstacles before I get there. Keep me from trouble! Go ahead of me and clear the way so that I will arrive in good time. 

Prayer for Blessing for Safe Travel

Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways – Psalm 128:1 NKJV

Lord, as you watch over me during my time of travel, I ask that you would bless this trip. That every where I go, every person I interact would be a blessing to me and I would be blessing to them.  I thank you for your help during my journey.  

Prayers for Protect of Sickness While Traveling

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. – psalm 91:5-7 NKJV

Lord, as I set out to travel I ask for your protection over my body. Protect me from any form of sickness that would try to attack me and cause me harm. I pray that you would strengthen my immune system and help me avoid any food that could hurt me. 

I ask for your blood to cover me, Jesus that no type of infection, virus, or physical accident would come near me. That your hedge of protection would be round about me. Thank you Lord, that I don’t have to fear and that nothing shall come near me. (Psalm 91:7)

Bonus Travel Prayer: Prayer for Safe Travel for a Loved One (Prayer for Traveling Mercies)

*This prayer can be used for a family member or friend. 

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, – 1 Timothy 2:1 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I lift up (insert name) today. I ask for them to have a safe trip and that you would protect them as they travel. Set your angels to go before them and with them as they go. Let no harm come near them and give them the grace they need.

Lord, I also ask that they would seek you while they travel and that they would experience your presence during this time. Draw them close to you and give them peace.

Praying as you travel will give you the assurance of the Lord’s protection. Regardless of your mode of transport…airplane, boat, car, etc…  prayer is very important as you travel. 

You don’t know what dangers that could be ahead that you need God’s help to overcome. God always protects us even from dangers we don’t know about. He is a good God!

I encourage you to pray the Word of God because it is powerful in the spirit realm. Trust that God will always be with you along the way, because He is. He has a purpose for your life, and wants you to fulfill and complete the assignment He has set for you on earth. 

And remember when you arrive safely, thank Him for watching over you every step of the way.  He desevers the praise!

Safety is the most important aspect that comes first when we think about travel, our help comes from God. At valiant Safaris we have learnt to pray for our every traveler so that every trip can go on successfully and safely.

4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Use the prayers below for your physical journeys, but also for the spiritual journeys of yourself and others.

Preparation for the Journey

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

The Destination

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.

Prayers for safe travel are used for all sorts of reasons. Whether a short day trip or just a daily commute. If a loved one is setting off on a journey, it’s only natural you want them to travel safely and arrive at their destination.

The Bible verse from Proverbs 3:21-23 speaks to this desire, asking God to store up sound wisdom for the upright and be a shield to those who walk in integrity.

This verse reminds us that we can have confidence in God’s care for those we love. He is always with them, even when we can’t be. We can rest assured that He will keep them safe and bring them back to us in His perfect time.

Sanctifying Rest: Planning a Holy Vacation

Summertime and vacations are nearly synonymous. Many families plan trips around common interests, location or themes. When our family plans a vacation, we found that centering it around our faith has had a wonderful impact on us all. Growing up Catholic meant we had the freedom to explore historical sites and shrines in various locations around the world. We had an opportunity to incorporate the values and virtues that were lived out at home, but in a new environment. This was, in a way, the chance to evangelize.

My Early Experiences of Travel When I was younger, most years we would take a family vacation with my grandparents who always modeled fun and faith-filled spiritual vacations. We would drive to closer locales near southern Louisiana or hop a flight to an exciting destination. Time together with them was seeing love and sacrifice lived out. These trips, whether far or near, sparked a conviction to explore but also to remain connected with my faith. My grandparents devoutly prayed the rosary daily on their knees bedside, even while traveling and no matter where we journeyed, we never missed Sunday Mass. Most often, our travels incorporated prayer before family meals, embracing all the sacraments, cooking together, and family outings in new places to discover our German Catholic roots. As I grew up, travel changed somewhat as my grandparents aged, although faith remained at the center of our family activities.

After my grandfather passed, before and after marriage and children, I continued to plan trips and explore. There was a period of my life as a young adult, where I welcomed travel with my grandmother, aunt, and mom. Over the course of several summers, we would embark on mini-pilgrimages in the US oftentimes to see a religious site and would build our vacation around that. We traveled to locales like New York, California, Florida, Georgia and New Mexico plus a few other stops in between. We explored mission churches and art galleries, local cuisine and gardens, and attended Mass in the most amazing places. My grandmother kept a journal every day recalling feast days and family travel. My mom and I often revisit these journals and recall how faith has moved through each generation of our family. I have so many fond memories that shaped me along the way. These vacations left lasting impressions on me not only physically, welcoming rest and renewal, but having the most impact on me spiritually.

Planning a Family Vacation Now as a parent, I always anticipate the planning of family trips with excitement. I desire to share travel with my family and embrace all the experiences that are to come. It is something I look forward to with great joy! Planning a holy vacation offers so many opportunities to form our children while enjoying time together–and for that I am so grateful to God! In a society that glorifies busyness, it’s important to recognize that rest is sanctifying. Setting healthy family parameters and expectations while on vacation is ideal. Balancing planned events, while making space for downtime, prayer and keeping Sunday holy are extremely important for a successful vacation.

When you go on vacation, what are your top priorities? Whether you are ‘planning in advance’ type of family, or embracing some spontaneity, it’s important to keep God at the center of the time spent together. Planning a mini pilgrimage will allow you to use vacation time to grow in your faith, serve others and evangelize through the witness of your family. It is a great opportunity to connect your children with Sacred Scripture and the history of our Church, which brings our faith to life and ultimately our family closer. In the end, the goal is to build the foundation for a strong relationship with Jesus–one that will sustain the family through all the ups and downs in life. A steady, rock-solid foundation starts with the family putting faith in action into practice. As children grow into adults, they witness and desire to pass this tradition along as the center of their future family too. And hopefully desire to incorporate a little travel, too.

Let God speak to you through each and every new experience you encounter, especially through your travels. With the end of the school year, summer family plans are in full swing. Planning a holy vacation and encouraging family time are much needed–all in an effort to build the Church, the body of Christ. My hope is that using these few strategic ideas will inspire you as you plan.

Prepare and Pray : God wants to be a part of your life

• Make time for prayer as you plan
• Bring your intentions with you
• Set a virtue or scripture verse for your trip
• Do some research before you go
• Check out your destinations holy sites-find local mission churches, relics or shrines
• Plan exploring around local Mass schedules and churches
• Attend Mass and celebrate Holy Days while traveling
• Let the saints lead you and learn about saints you might be near

Travel and Embrace the Journey : Explore and Journal

• Bring along prayer cards and a notebook for journaling
• Explore nature on a beach, lake, hike or bike trail
• Exercise as a family; walk, bike, or swim
• Plan a picnic
• Venture beyond the usual tourist attractions
• Don’t be afraid to say grace in public
• Listen to a Catholic podcast while traveling

Find Opportunities to Serve

• Connect with local Catholic organizations who have a mission to serve
• Meet up with a local family in the area you are visiting, build community
• Consider planning an intentional Catholic mission trip
• Visit cemeteries and pray for the dead

Immerse Yourself In Local Culture

• Collect keepsakes and make special stops to shop at local religious stores
• Explore the sights and sounds of the area, including a stop by a local church parish
• Plan to dine at locally suggested restaurants and enjoy the food of the region
• Enjoy a family cooking, baking or art class
• Research local customs and traditions
• Learn a new language
• Enjoy a museum or local art gallery

Trust that God will help you plan a fruitful trip

• This time together and this trip is a gift from God
• Set a prayer routine- begin and end each day in family prayer
• Be grateful and trust
• Be open to new adventures
• May God be with you along your journey, wherever that might be

From thrifty N.H. residents to Connecticut’s big spenders, here’s how much New Englanders spend on vacation

Welcome back to Survey Says, a carefully curated collection of travel surveys that have piqued our interest. Translation: We found some fun tidbits and slapped them together. This week, we dive into the world of travel budgets.

How much do you spend on travel every year?

The answer, at least according to one recent study, depends on where you reside. The study by a Canadian online casino asked 3,000 U.S. residents about their vacation preferences and how much they spend while on holiday. In New England, vacation budgets ranged from about $1,900 to $2,600, with one glaring exception.

The study’s most surprising finding was that New Hampshire residents spend the least on vacations compared with other states. Granite State residents are the thriftiest, with an annual vacation budget of just $450. They also take fewer vacations, with workers in New Hampshire and Maine only taking one vacation per year, compared to the average of two weeks for New England residents.

Here’s the breakdown of what New Englanders spend for vacation.

• Connecticut: $2,583, two vacations a year.
• Maine: $1,860, one vacation a year.
• Massachusetts: $2,234, two vacations a year.
• New Hampshire: $450, one vacation a year.
• Rhode Island: $2,271, two vacations a year.
• Vermont: $2,000, two vacations a year.

It’s not only budgets that differ from state to state. The study also found that preferred activities depend on the state of residence. There is plenty of overlap (hello, beaches) and some key differences.

Which activities do New Englanders enjoy on vacation?

Connecticut

The big spenders from Connecticut favor beach and poolside vacations. Adventure holidays are the second choice, with cruises coming in third. Family members are the preferred travel companions.

The top vacation choice for Maine residents is an adventure getaway. Cultural getaways and lake vacations tie for the second favorite, followed by amusement park vacations in third place. Somehow, beach vacations did not make the list of top vacations. Perhaps Mainers flee the beaches because too many Massachusetts residents are on the sand.

Massachusetts

It’s no surprise that Massachusetts denizens favor beach and poolside vacations. Cultural vacations rank second, with adventure travel and city trips tying for third. Family members are Bay Staters’ preferred travel companions.

New Hampshire

The thrifty folks of New Hampshire favor beach and poolside vacations. Road trips are the second most popular option, with city breaks coming in third. New Hampshire residents prefer traveling with family members.

Rhode Island

While most New Englanders crave getting into nature, the top vacation option for Rhode Islanders is city breaks. Cultural holidays are the second favorite, followed by beach and poolside relaxation in third place. The preferred travel companion of Ocean State residents is a partner or spouse.

Vermonters’ top choice is ski vacations. Beach and poolside relaxation is the second favorite, with adventure vacations in third place. Although they may like to ski, Vermont residents don’t want to hit the slopes with family members. They prefer taking vacations with friends.

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Best, worst times to travel for Memorial Day weekend

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Here's a breakdown of the best and worst times to travel by car depending on which day you are traveling:

Thursday, May 23

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, May 24

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 25

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 26

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday, May 27

• Best travel time: After 7 p.m.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

For perspective: According to the State of Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, there were 171,957 visitors to Hawaii Island in July 2023 and 170,504 visitors in July 2022. These vacationers are dishing out a ton of cash. In July 2023, total visitor spending hovered at $263 million.

Because Hawaii is such a popular destination, a trip there can get pretty pricey. According to a new post on Collections of Waikiki — though the cost varies, depending on how many people you’re traveling with — a one-week trip to Hawaii will set you back about $4,000. In an era where most people can’t afford a $1,000 emergency , that’s a budget-breaking amount to shell out on a vacation.

So, how can you save on a summer trip to Hawaii? Here are seven ways.

Visit a Cheaper Island — Like Oahu — Instead of Maui

The state of Hawaii is made up of 137 islands, islets and shoals, with some locales being more expensive for tourists than others. According to The Hawaii Vacation Guide, Maui is the most expensive island to visit, with a trip there costing $5,321. Check out Oahu instead — it’s the cheapest island, with a total cost to visit of $3,319.

Use Google Flights or Skyscanner and Be Flexible With Dates

Once you’ve decided on a destination, it’s time to find the best deals on flights. Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to search for the cheapest tickets available. Being flexible with your dates is highly recommended.

“Being flexible on travel dates allows you to play around with the cheapest days or weeks to fly,” said Kelly Tolliday , a travel advisor at Fora Travel . “Google Flights even has a feature where you can search for the cheapest tickets for a 2-week trip to Hawaii in the next 6 months, giving you the ultimate money savings on flights.”

Check Out Groupon and ResortPass

You can potentially save a ton on your summer vacation to Hawaii by using a service like Groupon or ResortPass.

By using these discount marketplaces you can enjoy “attractions, excursions or experiences at high end resorts, without paying the full sticker price,” Tolliday said. “ResortPass allows you to stay at a rental home or cheaper hotel while still gaining access to luxury resort amenities around the island.”

Visit Food Trucks or Food Markets

The steep price of dining out in Hawaii can make a big dent in your vacation budget. Go out on the town in a different way — by checking out food trucks or food markets.

“Food trucks are massively popular across Hawaii, and you can find insanely delicious meals for much cheaper than you would in a restaurant,” Tolliday said.

Go Grocery Shopping

You may be wanting to leave the hustle and bustle of your working life back home while on vacation, but don’t shelve grocery shopping if you’re looking to save money.

“While grocery shopping can be expensive in Hawaii, you can still save some bucks by cooking a few meals at home, if you are in a home rental or have a kitchen to use,” Tolliday said. “Breakfast is usually an easy, cheap option to cook and enjoy a slow morning at home.”

Volunteer for Discounts

Here’s a pretty unusual way to save on your vacation to Hawaii this summer: Volunteer for an activity such as, say, pulling weeds on the grounds of your hotel. Some hotels are looking for people to give back to the land in exchange for a discount or possibly even a free night’s stay.

Exploring? Rent a Car

Though renting a car in Hawaii is not exactly cheap, it can save you money on transit in some scenarios.

“In my opinion, the cost of a rental car is typically less than the cost of accommodation in more touristy, walkable areas,” Tolliday said. “I also love the option to be able to explore more remote areas of whichever island I’m staying on and not rely on expensive Ubers or taxis to get around.”
