Chris Stapleton’s visits El Paso for his All-American Road Show tour

Ethan Thomas , Photographer

May 12, 2023

The anticipation and eagerness ran high as the crowd was ready to see Grammy Award-winning country artist, Chris Stapleton, take the stage in his first stop, El Paso. Marking the opening of his All-American Roadshow Tour, announced in early 2023.

UTEP’s Don Haskins Center was greeted by the artist, surrounded by fog and warm red and orange lights, which intersected on the crowd Some were so excited that they pressed up against the stage’s barricades waiting for the show. Stapleton was joined on stage by his wife, Morgane, who often performs alongside her husband.

Stapleton plucked at the string of his Fender Jazzmaster, one of his many signature guitars, playing the opening riff to “ Nobody to Blame,” his first single from his 2015 debut album. The crowd roared, their cheers echoing as Stapleton’s band joined in.

Stapleton transitioned masterfully to “ Parachute ,” followed by “ Second One to Know ,” which are more songs from the artist’s debut album. This setlist was a treat for those who have been fans of the singer since his earlier music.

cropped pic

After opening with songs from the album that won Stapleton his first two Grammys, the crowd heard “ Starting Over,” the title track from the artist’s most recent album. This album was released in late-2020 and garnered almost 200 million streams on Spotify.

Stapleton then played his songs “ Millionaire” and “Hard Livin’” from his 2017 album, “ From A Room Vol. 2,” which was released the same year as his album “ From A Room Vol. 1.” The name of both albums is a pun for the recording studio Stapleton produced them in, RCA Studio A.

The historic RCA Studio A, on Nashville’s “Music Row,” is run by the producer and bandmate to Stapleton, Dave Cobb.

The country artist transitioned the audience back to his most recent album by playing his newly released cover version of “ Worry B Gone,” highlighting wanting to “puff” away the bad times. The band then played, “What Are You Listening To?” , released as a single in 2013.

Stapleton then shifted gears back to his debut album, with its title track “ Traveller,” followed by another off the same album, bringing down the tempo with “Whiskey and You.”

Following this trend, the country artist then played two more songs from his most recent album, “ Arkansas ,” to hype the crowd back up, followed by “ You Should Probably Leave,” sitting second on the artist’s top-played tracks, according to Spotify .

Keeping the crowd fired up, Stapleton belted “ Midnight Train to Memphis,” and “Might as Well Get Stoned,” from both the “Vol. 1” and “Traveller” albums respectively. Stapleton followed with a ballad, “Cold” from the country artist’s most recent album, undoubtedly leaving the crowd with chills.

Stapleton then took a detour from his own work, to cover Lynard Skynard’s “Freebird,” a song known for a challenging and extended guitar break in the middle. However, the artist played it skillfully and Stapleton continued with, “The Devil Named Music,” from his album “Traveller.”

After the cover, Stapleton graced the crowd with a guitar-heavy rendition of his song “I Was Wrong,” from his “Vol. 1” album. After a song about unrequited love, the artist masterfully followed with “Joy of My Life” from his most recent album.

The country artist led into “ Fire Away,” a song from his debut album, which gained fame for its music video that brought attention to mental health, and is touted for helping change the perception of those experiencing mental health crises.

Stapleton then took a beat to introduce his bandmates and recognize their hard work in helping to put on a lively show. Getting back into the music, he played what is arguably known as the song that put the country star on the radar of country-western listeners, “ Tennessee Whiskey,” from his debut album. Tennessee Whiskey is his most played song, through various music streaming platforms.

To end the night and to keep the concert-goers satisfied, Stapleton played “ Outlaw State of Mind,” another from his debut album.

Stapleton’s All-American Roadshow Show Tour hosts a revolving cast of opening acts. Scheduled to appear is Charlie Crockett, Allen Stone, Margo Price, Marty Stuart, Marcus King and The War & Treaty.

Stapleton looks towards the crowd and shares a smile with his fans.

Chris Stapleton kicked off his 2023 “All American Tour” March 16 and shortly made his way to El Paso to perform his fourth show off the tour, April 26. The El Paso show is said to have sold out in minutes with ticket resale prices reaching as high as $300. Stapleton performed what could be described as a magical night for fans at the Don Haskins Center in front of a full arena. He had special guests and opening acts with him that night who were Margo Price and Nikki Lane. Stapleton had the El Paso crowd singing along from the first song he opened with, “Nobody to Blame,” until his most popular closing song “Tennessee Whiskey.” Fans sang their hearts out as they did not want the night to end. Stapleton closed out his show with an encore of “Outlaw State of Mind.”

Stapleton is a widely known country artist who was born in Lexington, Ky. He moved to Nashville, Tenn. as he pursued his music career. In 2013 he signed to Mercury Nashville and released his first solo single “What Are You Listening To?” in October 2013. However, he did not reach stardom overnight. In 2016, his album “Traveller,” which was released in 2015, earned Stapleton his flowers. He won Grammy Award-Winning debut album and picked up accolades for the Best Country Album all while the title track also received a trophy for Best Country Solo Performance. Stapleton’s most popular song is “Tennessee Whiskey,” along with other popular hits such as “Broken Halos,” “You Should Probably Leave,” “Whiskey and You” and “Starting Over.” Christ Stapleton has a total of four studio albums with his latest being released in 2020 titled “Starting Over.”

Morgan Wallen leads the 2024 Country Music Association award noms, Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ snubbed

chris stapleton tour el paso tx

AP Music Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — He had some help: Morgan Wallen tops the 2024 Country Music Association Awards nominations with seven.

For a third year in a row, Wallen is up for both the top prize — entertainer of the year — and the male vocalist categories.

Rounding out the entertainer of the year categories are Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson.

Post Malone’s massive radio hit, “I Had Some Help,” which features Wallen, is the main reason why the country singer leads the pack this year. It is up for single, song, musical event and music video of the year. His last nomination is a second one in the musical event category, for his collaboration with Eric Church, “Man Made a Bar.”

Single of the year is awarded to the artist, producer and mix engineers; song of the year is given to the songwriters.

Ahead of the nominations announcement, some fans speculated that Beyoncé, whose landmark country-and-then-some reclamation “Cowboy Carter” was released during the eligibility window, could receive a nomination at the 2024 CMAs. She did not.

Earlier this year, the album hit No. 1 on the Billboard country albums chart, making her the first Black woman to top the chart since its 1964 inception.

The album was five years in the making, a direct result of what Beyoncé has called “an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” most likely a reference to a 2016 CMAs performance that resulted in racist backlash.

The CMA Awards are nominated and voted on by members of the Country Music Association, which includes music executives, artists, publicists, songwriters and other industry professionals.

Wallen is followed by both Cody Johnson, who is also nominated in the male vocalist category for the third year in a row, and 7-time male vocalist of the year winner, Stapleton.

Stapleton and Johnson have five nominations each.

But Stapleton could take home seven trophies, should he sweep his categories.

Stapleton is both an artist and producer on “White Horse,” up for single of the year, and “Higher,” up for album of the year.

At the CMAs, production credits are not counted as separate nominations, although they are factored into trophy counts.

First-time nominee Post Malone and Wilson, last year’s entertainer of the year winner, are tied with four nominations. All of Malone’s nominations are for “I Had Some Help.”

Louis Bell, Charlie Handsome and Hoskins are tied with three nominations for their work as producers and co-writers on “I Had Some Help.”

Jelly Roll, Combs, Kacey Musgraves and Megan Moroney also boast three nods each. The latter three could take home four trophies: Combs is both artist and producer on “Fathers & Sons,” up for album of the year. The same is true for Musgraves’ album “Deeper Well.”

And Moroney is both artist and director of her nominated music video, “I’m Not Pretty.”

The CMA Awards will air on Nov. 20 on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern. It can be streamed the next day on Hulu.
