So You Want To Visit A Sustainable Farm

You are one in a million, a person wanting so much to understand food production that you’re willing to take time out to visit a local farm.

That is exciting, and we are honored to be able to show you our side of the story… the story of a really-pasture-raised, grass-centric, rotational-grazing Crazy Farm, right here in East Texas.

⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓    Keep Scrolling to Buy Tickets to This Season’s Tours!     ⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓

We are a truly family-run farm, and pretty much all the time, all hands are on deck! But we feel it’s important to carve out some time each spring and fall to invite you, the consumer, to come and learn about a better way to eat.

chicken farm tours near me

What to Expect During Our Farm Tour

Our tours are fun, but a bit physically challenging! Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or boots, and be prepared to cover a good amount of East Texas pasture terrain while observing our methods for raising grass-fed-and-finished beef, rotationally-pastured meat chickens, really-pasture-raised hens, pastured pork, and if you’re especially lucky, you might get to meet our Thanksgiving turkeys and some baby calves and chicks!

Our tours are engaging and educational, and though you won’t get to touch any livestock, (Sorry! They’re not pets!) we do have some farm critters that love a good ear-scratching, such as our friendly farm dogs, Shadow and Long John, and our farm cats, Tiger, Sassy, Attila, and Boudica.

Depending on the particulars of the day you visit, you may get to experience a cow move, observe a poultry shelter move, gobble at the turkeys, toss some veggies to the pigs, and check out the forage crops we’ve planted for the season. This is a real working farm, so you never know exactly what a tour day will hold , but we get wonderful feedback from visitors to our tours, and we know you’ll enjoy it and learn a lot.

A Special Tour-goer Discount

After the tour ends, you are welcome to visit our new farm store. As a thanks for taking the time to come and learn more about your food source, farm tour attendees get 5% off their orders (regular-price in-store items only, and excludes bulk/case purchases, volume deals, and online orders). Bring a cooler along, or occasionally we have leftover shipping boxes you can have to transport your cold goodies home.

Arrival on Tour Day

Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to get settled in. When you arrive, park according to attendant’s instructions, then visit our check-in table to … check in! Ha! There, kiddos will receive their scavenger hunt materials and farm sticker for the classic and 2.0 tours, and we’ll check you off the attendance list so we can make sure everyone has arrived prior to setting out to pasture.

What to Bring / Amenities

We request that you plan to bring your own bottled water, but we will provide additional water for those who run out. We do have a restroom in our farm store. We suggest “going” before the tour begins, as we will be quite far from the facilities once we depart.

We strongly suggest dressing for the weather—our weather can go from quite cold to very hot in just an hour, and our hill here in East Texas tends to run a little cooler than surrounding areas–great for summertime tours! Wear a hat, breathable sleeves, and closed-toe shoes. We strongly suggest tall-sided boots to help deter fire ants, thorns, and mud.

You are welcome to bring a camera, but please try to point it away from any project messes you may see! Remember—we’re a real, working farm, and we always have more to do than time to do it! Feel free to tag us on Facebook or Instagram @Shady Grove Ranch.

Hazards and Our Expectations

Pretend you’re a farmer for a day, checking out the beauty of your workplace, but taking care while you do it! Please be mindful of pasture holes, electric fence, thornbushes, fire ants, large equipment, construction zones, and farm critters. We have several varieties of wildflower that have wicked but invisible thorns, so best practice is to ask before you pick! We want your first experience with us to be a wonderful and fun one!

We humbly but firmly ask that you inform your children of the expected behavior on a real farm. There are real dangers on a working farm, and it is important that we all be respectful of those as well as other people around us. Children (and adults) should not touch or enter without first being invited or instructed. Do not feed, pet, chase, grab, or shout at the livestock. Do not throw anything at any time. No smoking on the property is permitted at all. Please put your trash in the proper receptacle.

Advice for Bringing Children

Our terrain may be too difficult for most sidewalk strollers, but a large-wheeled jogging stroller or off-road wagon would be suitable to pull toddler-age children. For very young children, a backpack-style carrier can be a good option. For older children, remind them that God gave them two strong young legs to explore a beautiful farm with. Enjoy getting some exercise! We will also provide a farm scavenger hunt game for children to complete during their visit.

Weaker Walkers

We do not have vehicular transport during tours at this time. If you have issues walking long distances outdoors or up and down hills, our tours may not be a good fit at this time, but you are welcome to visit our farm store and enjoy some time on our large Texas-style porch where some rocking chairs are located. We have some comfortable chairs indoors in the A/C as well.

Purchase Your Tour Tickets Here

We now host ticket sales on our regular online store page. Use the big green button to hop over and view the current tour schedule and purchase your tickets!

Think about the importance of a food-laden table. Around that table, you build bonds with your family. You meet new friends. You make business decisions and shake hands. When you gather around a table, the food in front of you can either nourish these meaningful moments, or diminish them.

We believe in nourishment.

That’s why we grow fruits and vegetables the natural way. Nurtured in toxin-free beds, and harvested by hands that care, our produce is 100% pure and natural.

Our Chickens

If you’ve ever heard the saying, “Happy chickens are healthy chickens,” you heard the truth! When chickens are raised humanely, free to engage in instinctive behaviors, they’re physically healthier, genuinely happier, and better able to lay healthy eggs.

Since the beginning, we’ve maintained a steadfast commitment to raising our chickens the humane way. Visit the farm, and you’ll see happy chickens roaming, pecking, perching, and flapping, just as they were born to do. Their diet, including seeds and insects found in the soil, keeps them healthy – making the eggs that you later enjoy full of 100% wholesome goodness.

Find the farm stand at the very end of Henley Street in Moscow, ID

2023 Update : Farm Stand will be open for the season by March 18th, updates to follow! We will open for a few weekend before that so keep an eye out on Instagram and Facebook for those dates. You can visit our Moscow farm stand 7 days a week at 225 E Henley St . Open 9am-dusk each of those days. Fresh from the farm veggies, Brush Creek Creamery cheese, Love’s Kombucha in a can, and free-range chicken eegs. The farm stand is self-serve and payment is on the honor system. Venmo (@DeepRootsFarm make certain it’s paid to Greg Freistadt), cash and check are accepted. We are very excited to offer this to our community, please help us by not touching what you don’t need and paying for items you take. Thanks!

You might also find us at the Moscow Farmers Market in May and early June for plant starts and veggies. After plant start season you will find all of your fresh, locally grown and Certified Naturally Grown vegetables at our farm stand.

Deep Roots Farm in Moscow, ID grows vegetables and small fruits using techniques that promote biodiversity on their farm. We practice an intensive planting rotation to create diversity for plant health while increasing production on a small land base. We provide open and untouched space for beneficial insects and wild animals. We grow a wide variety of crops that are well suited to the climate utilizing locally grown and saved seeds when possible. Deep Roots Farm sells directly to their loyal customers at local farmers markets , and at their farmstand. We also love working with local chefs. You can find Deep Roots Farm produce at Maialina , FoodOlogy and Nectar for much of the year. We use only natural methods and do not use any synthetic chemicals for raising healthy food in small spaces all in Moscow city limits. As perennial students of nature and design combined with knowledge and experience of others, we continue to change and adapt the farm and its systems for environmental, human and economic sustainability.

LEARN how to farm on a small scale while making a profit by bringing one of the farmers to speak to your group. Find more information here .

Lots of tomatoes, strawberries and sunflowers at the farmstand this weekend! Come brighten up your table and your plate with good flavors and colors!

Greg Freistadt

Growing up in Montana Greg always had an appreciation for the natural world. Although focused on outdoor recreation, he developed a green thumb by helping his parents garden and landscape. Greg's love for travel has taken him around the world where in Southeast Asia he gained an appreciation for fresh, local foods and small farming. While pursuing a BS in natural resources from the University of Idaho ('10), he developed a passion for sustainable agriculture. As an intern at the WSU Organic Farm and working at a few other local farms he gained the knowledge to start his own farm and consulting business.

Please understand that during our busy season we may not respond to your emails or phone calls right away.

Pasturebird

Where to Visit a Pasture Raised Chicken Farm Near Me

At Pasturebird , we’re all about transparency in agriculture. Food labels can be terribly misleading, and while at one point pasture raised chicken was your best bet for ensuring you were getting a product that was not only healthier for you but also the animals, we’ve recently become disheartened to learn that there are some companies calling their chicken “pasture raised” when really their chickens aren’t much better off than conventionally farmed chickens. These companies use factory farming practices, open a few doors in their barn, and call their chicken pasture raised. Companies like this have the power to give the whole industry a bad rap, and we’re not ok with that.

So how do you know which companies to trust? Look for farms that invite you to examine their agricultural practices - not just online or in print, where clever photos can make anything look the way they want, but farms that actually let you visit and see for yourself the way the animals live. You can tell a lot about a company’s ethics by how transparent they are - those that refuse transparency or cloak their business operations in clever marketing tactics rather than actual transparency are often not to be trusted. That’s why we offer farm tours at Pasturebird, and cultivate a robust social media presence where we post real time videos that allow you to see the way our birds live and eat. While it may not always be practical to invite civilians onto a working farm, social media allows us to provide a window into our world even when we don’t have a scheduled farm tour that you can visit in person.

It used to be that agriculture and local farms were a vibrant and important part of most communities. With the advent of large scale industrial agriculture in the second half of the twentieth century, farming became further removed from everyday life, and most people remained completely unaware of how the food they purchased was grown or produced. This lack of accountability can result in unethical companies focusing more on the profit margin than the quality of their products and the welfare of their animals. Thankfully, in recent years there has been a shift to more people wanting to learn and educate themselves about their food choices, and this has resulted in a movement of consumers who are interested in learning about where their food comes from, and holding the companies they buy from to a higher ethical standard.

Transparency Benefits Both the Farmers and their Consumers

While the shift to people wanting to learn more about their food sources is a positive one, it can be difficult for farmers to communicate with consumers without first providing them with an education in agriculture. According to the research paper “Opening the Doors to Agriculture: The Effect of Transparent Communication on Attitude”:

The limited agricultural experience and knowledge of today’s consumer coupled with their concerns regarding industrialized agricultural practices has complicated the conversation between producers and consumers.

Transparency as a system of checks and balances exists in many industries, but is particularly important in the agricultural industry, because it’s not an exaggeration to say that there is no industry more important than that which provides the food that we eat. Transparency benefits farmers by allowing them to educate and more effectively communicate with their consumers, and it benefits the consumers by allowing them to learn more about their food sources and make sure that they are supporting companies that align with their own ethics.

How to Visit a Pasture Raised Chicken Farm

Depending on your location, you may be lucky enough to be able to visit the farms that grow or raise your food. We offer regular farm tours at Pasturebird, and if you support us or other ethical agricultural companies, social media can provide a great tool for communicating with farms and figuring out how you might plan a visit, if that’s something that they offer.

We’ve spoken before about our partnership with Land to Market , a company that offers an outcome based regenerative certification (meaning that it holds companies accountable to the claims they make about regenerating the Earth through their agriculture or production practices). Land to Market can be an excellent resource for finding other ethical farms and businesses, and if you find one local to you, it never hurts to reach out to them directly to see if they offer farm tours or other methods of transparency such as regular social media videos or “behind the scenes” looks at their methods.

Localharvest.org is another great resource for finding local farms, and it allows you to enter your city to show you the farms nearest to you. Once you narrow this down, you can reach out to the farms directly, or visit their individual websites to learn about how they maintain transparency and whether they allow farm visits.

What to Remember When Visiting a Pasture Raised Chicken Farm

As laudable as transparency in agriculture is, and as much as we love to offer farm tours to our consumers and encourage other farms to do the same, it’s important to remember that first and foremost, we are a working farm! It’s important to respect the land, respect the animals, and respect the equipment when visiting a working farm. This mutual respect is what allows us to continue to offer physical transparency in the form of inviting consumers to our farm.

Second, wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dusty. We run a pretty clean operation, but it is a farm, and we’d hate a fear of getting a little dirt on your clothes to take away from the experience of visiting us and seeing firsthand what Pasturebird is all about.

Last but not least, as much as we love dogs, please leave yours at home. Our animals are used to our own highly trained livestock guard dogs, but other dogs can easily spook our cattle. You can book your next tour with us HERE and see for yourself what Pasturebird is all about.

Our History

Hidwell Family Farm was started by Ann Ogilvie back in 1988 off a dirt road called Hidwell Place off of Blaney Franks Road. She had farm camps for kids of all ages to come and learn about farm life. She partnered with schools and 4H programs to host field trips and day camps on the farm to do farm tours and teach children & their families about animals. She had ducks, chickens, sheep, goats, horses, barn cats, and more. She sectioned off pieces of her property as she got older and 3 of her children built houses and raised their families on the farm and helped run it. She eventually stopped hosting the farm tours and camps so she could spend more time with her family. Now, two generations later, her grandkids want to carry on the farm experience she created through farm tours and activities.

Peace Farm Store

Peace Farm is nestled on a southern mountain slope in an area known as  the Palouse  in North Idaho. The farm is well established with an orchard and organic garden, richly composted from the farm animals who have lived here throughout the years. Living here has been a dream. As I’ve cleared the land and built out my chicken coops, pastures and gardens over the years, my goals of sharing all this with others has come into clearer focus.

Along with my goals to share what I’ve learned and what I produce, I also want to be kind and gentle to the land and the animals that inhabit the forests that surround me. Last year I planted about 100 Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Tamarack, and wild apple trees. I built a larger and more secure chicken pen to keep the chickens safe from predators and began harvesting seeds of all kinds and seedlings to share. I became NPIP (National Poultry Improvement Program) certified to sell hatching eggs and chicks, and found new ways to preserve my garden produce to become more self-sustainable.

My greatest joy comes from meeting those who visit Peace Farm and watching the amazing nature that surrounds me. I hope you come back to visit often as I share my trials and triumphs, creativity and, yes, even my failures (which have been numerous)!

Horses have always been a passion of mine, so in 2007 I wrote a book about the Appaloosa breed, then subsequently wrote a book of true stories on how horses saved the lives of several people. These stories are told in the voice of the storytellers and are such a testament to the therapeutic abilities of horses. Read about my books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cheryl-Dudley/e/B001JP7LNO/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WE WILL BE CLOSED THIS YEAR

My wife and I were in a vehicle accident earlier this year.   The good news is we survived.

chicken farm tours near me

15 car pileup, everybody survived.

18 wheeler came across, and onto the center divide.

My wife and I were on our way to Salt Lake City, to deliver some apartment items to one our sons.   We didn't make it.  first impact from first 18 wheeler, took off the driver side of our truck, and my left elbow.

the second 18 wheeler struck us from behind, and sent us a quarter mile down the freeway.

The accident made us miss our butcher date for the pigs.

But the butcher had a few openings.  So some of the pigs are available now.   Please click on the pig button and reserve your half or whole pig.  Thanks for your support.    We don''t have any chicks for sale right now, maybe next year.

Update... we are recovering. Thank you for all the prayers

15 cars involved, hard to believe we survived.
