Savannah, Georgia, has no shortage of fanciful things to do. The hotel is steps from Niagara Falls Culinary Institute , where couples can indulge their inner chefs together, with Oban Inn and special-occasion Revolving Dining Room at Skylon Tower popular for meals. The Maid of the Mist boat tour, visiting both American Falls and jaw-dropping Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, is a top attraction.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

old buildings and blue cobblestones in the streets of old san juan, puerto rico

The rich-in-history island has been slammed with natural disasters and—with tourism making up 10 percent of Puerto Rico’s GDP—is in need of tourism dollars as they continue rebuilding. As a result, San Juan could be an unexpected but wonderful couples’ escape. (Bonus: No passport necessary.) Check into the dreamy 18th-century boutique hotel The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan, with rates from $155 per night. Once settled, visit the 16th-century fort Viejo San Juan or 16th-century Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Take a peek at La Fortaleza, the walled compound where the governor lives, and don’t forget to visit San Juan Bautista cathedral, Puerto Rico’s oldest cathedral (and second oldest in the Americas.) Try Cafe El Punto for Puerto Rican and Creole food beloved by locals. While there, make sure to support local businesses, and consider volunteering with or donating to a group such as Para la Naturaleza .

Paso Robles, California

exploring the field of light at sensorio

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles in California’s Central Coast, the charming wine village of Paso Robles is home to some of America’s best wines—not to mention a fun retreat for couples. Stay at luxurious The Piccolo Hotel , a boutique with rooms from $226, and make time for Paso’s best wineries, including Turley , Opolo , Adelaida , and Calcareous . For a sober retreat, take in the waters at Franklin Hot Springs and check out the Field of Light art installation by artist Bruce Munro, with 15 acres of colorful LED lights.

Whether you're just planning a quick getaway close to home or are looking for mythical places that are worth jetting around the world for, consider this list your go-to guide for the best couples vacations to take in 2024-2025.

Umbria, Italy

Umbria, Italy

The secret is out about Umbria, Italy's green heart. Right in the center of the country, only a couple of hours from Rome, it looks a lot like Tuscany but without the crowds. Expect rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves, Medieval hill towns, and country retreats. Oh and did we mention the food? In particular, Umbria is known for black truffles and artisanal charcuterie. The top towns to visit include Orvieto, Perugia, and Assisi, but it's a good idea to rent a car so you can explore the countryside too.

Where to Stay: Castello di Reschio is a luxury boutique hotel in an 11th century castle owned by a count who also happens to be an architect and designed the exceedingly chic property himself. Vocabolo Moscatelli is a design-centric hotel in a 12th-century monastery in a small town near Perugia.

Vienna, Austria

Forget Paris—Vienna is one of the most beautiful European capitals and if you and your spouse love history and culture, you'll have more than enough to do no matter the season. The Austrian capital consistently ranks as the world's most liveable city and some of the things that make it so liveable (good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure) make it a great place to visit too. Between the imperial palaces, myriad art museums, classical concerts, and cozy coffeehouses, it's the perfect destination for a European city break.

Where to Stay: A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Hotel Sacher Vienna is the city's historic grand dame and home to the original Sacher-torte. For a more modern take on Viennese hospitality, the buzzy new Rosewood Vienna is your best bet.

The Maldives

This island nation ranks among the best honeymoon destinations and one of the best destinations for an anniversary trip . It's no wonder—the beach resorts set on private islands are made for romantic getaways. Whether you and your spouse want to simply relax on the beaches or pursue more active pursuits like snorkeling, jet skiing, or practicing sunrise yoga, you'll find plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge together.

Where to Stay: Sister resorts JOALI Maldives and JOALI Being focus on artful stays and wellness, respectively.

An African safari is a classic couples trip and one of the best safari destinations is the Serengeti in Tanzania. January through March is calving season for the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti, which will then start moving toward Kenya in a phenomenon known as the Great Migration. But no matter when you visit the Serengeti, you're sure to see plenty of wildlife and unforgettable experiences like a hot air balloon ride over the savannah. For a bit of a beach escape at the end of your safari, add on a few days in Zanzibar.

Where to Stay: Serengeti Bushtops Camp and Roving Bushtops are small boutique camps set within the Serengeti National Park. Meanwhile, Singita Sabora Tented Camp and Singita Sasakwa Lodge are located nearby in the Grumeti Game Reserve, a private concession dedicated to conservation.

Vermont

For outdoorsy couples who love to spend time in nature and want a bit of a digital detox, Vermont is a great choice. Known as the Green Mountain State, it has plenty of beautiful places to go hiking or skiing in the winter, quaint New England towns, and opportunities to enjoy lake life. Every season brings its own charms, but the fall foliage in Vermont is especially beautiful. And while you might associate all-inclusive resorts with the Caribbean, one of the country's best all-inclusive hotels is located in Barnard, Vermont.

Where to Stay: Twin Farms in Barnard is an all-inclusive Relais & Châteaux resort where you can explore the trails, picnic by the pond, and go fishing or foraging. The Woodstock Inn & Resort in the quaint town of Woodstock oozes historic New England charm.

Porto, Portugal

Portugal's second largest city has much of the same charm as Lisbon, but is a bit less crowded. In this hilly city, you'll enjoy spotting azulejos (the traditional tiles that cover Portuguese buildings), sampling Portuguese cuisine, strolling along the banks of the Douro River, and touring historic port cellars like Graham's Lodge, where the British royal family's port wine is aged. It's also a good jumping off point to visit the scenic Douro Valley wine region.

Where to Stay: To be in the center of everything, Maison Albar Hotels - Le Monumental Palace is a great choice. This member of the Leading Hotels of the World has fantastic service, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a wonderful spa. Vila Foz Hotel & Spa , a member of Design Hotels, is housed in a historic mansion overlooking the Atlantic.

Miami, Florida

For the fun-loving couple that wants to go somewhere with nice beaches, trendy restaurants, flamboyant hotels, buzzing nightlife, and a dash of art and design, it's hard to beat Miami. From the sleek Design District and hip Wynwood to flashy South Beach, there's something for everyone. You can take in art at the Perez Museum, dine at a celebrity chef's restaurant, relax on the beach, and go salsa dancing in Little Havana all in a day.

Where to Stay: In a city where each hotel is more over-the-top than the last, the Faena Miami Beach takes the cake. For a more subdued stay, check into the Asian-inspired Setai Miami Beach , the Betsy , or Acqualina Resort & Residences for Mediterranean vibes.

Phuket, Thailand

For a tropical romantic getaway with a dash of culture and deliciously spicy cuisine, you can't go wrong with a trip to Phuket, the largest island in Thailand. Expect beautiful beaches, quaint Sino-Portuguese architecture in the main town, fantastic food, and legendary nightlife. On a trip to Phuket, you can go kayaking and snorkeling, try a traditional Thai massage, take a cooking class, and even visit an elephant sanctuary. Many couples combine Phuket with a few days in Bangkok and perhaps a mountain destination like Chiang Mai.

Where to Stay: Located on a secluded cove on the northern side of the island, Trisara is ideal for couples whose priorities are relaxing rather than nightlife. Anantara Layan Phuket Resort is also highly rated.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa's capital is a vibrant waterfront city that makes a great honeymoon or anniversary trip for couples who crave beautiful scenery and a variety of experiences. The city has a thriving art scene, bustling waterfront full of shops and restaurants, as well as plenty of chances to bask in nature, whether you want to hike Table Mountain or spot penguins on Boulders Beach. It's also easy to do a day trip or overnight to the Cape Winelands or add on a safari in Kruger National Park.

Where to Stay: Ellerman House is an intimate Relais & Châteaux hotel with a formidable art collection, fantastic views of the coast, and a couple of standalone villas in addition to rooms in the main building. The Silo Hotel , meanwhile, is a tour de force of African design above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art on the V&A Waterfront.

José Ignacio, Uruguay

Sometimes compared to Montauk, José Ignacio is Uruguay's coolest beach town, which draws people from neighboring Argentina as well as in-the-know travelers from the U.S. and Europe. And since it's in the southern hemisphere, it's the perfect warm weather escape during North American winters. Over the past few years, it's become a destination for art world insiders (a James Turrell Skyspace was inaugurated in 2021). It's also a good base for day trips to places like Punta del Este and Garzón, where you can visit the award-winning Bodega Garzón winery and dine at one of celebrity chef Francis Mallmann's restaurants.

Where to Stay: Family-owned Vik Retreats has not one but three art-focused hotels in and around José Ignacio ( Bahia Vik , Playa Vik , and Estancia Vik ). Posada Ayana is home to the aforementioned Turrell Skyspace.

Basque Country, Spain

For an alternative to Barcelona and Madrid, consider a trip to Basque Country in northern Spain. The area has a very large concentration of Michelin stars, making it a must for foodies. The most charming city in the region is San Sebastián, which is known for its beautiful beach and quaint city center full of narrow lanes packed with tapas bars (known as pintxos bars here). Bilbao is also worth visiting for its historic city center and the Guggenheim Bilbao, a feat of modern architecture with wonderful exhibitions.

Where to Stay: Maria Cristina, a Luxury Collection Hotel has been an elegant beacon of hospitality since 1912. Gran Hotel Domine in Bilbao has a sleek, modern design and a convenient location across the street from the Guggenheim Bilbao.

Agra, India

Agra, India

A journey to India to see the Taj Mahal is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—and what better destination for a couples trip than to visit the monument Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built as a memorial for his beloved wife? It's worth an early wake-up call to go right when the monument opens at sunrise. There's an incredibly strong spiritual aura of peace and tranquility in the morning, before the crowds descend. And aside from the Taj Mahal, it's worth visiting historic sites like Agra Fort.

Where to Stay: Oberoi Amarvilas is the height of luxury, with white glove service, a massive pool, and views of the Taj Mahal. Guests of ITC Mughal, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Agra rave about the spa and manicured gardens.

For jet-setting couples who love the sea and the city, this Caribbean island with a French flair is the best of both worlds. On a romantic getaway here, you and your significant other can spend your days relaxing on beautiful beaches before spending evenings indulging in delicious food and nightlife in Gustavia, the island's capital. Pack your most stylish swimwear and get ready for a swanky island getaway. Or don't pack anything at all—there are plenty of chic boutiques where you can engage in some retail therapy.

Where to Stay: Le Sereno is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World with private villas and a pool overlooking the beach. Opened in the 1950s, Eden Rock , now a member of the Oetker Collection, has welcomed famous guests like Greta Garbo, Peggy Guggenheim, and Lee Radziwill.

Istanbul, Turkey

This bustling, cosmopolitan city where Europe meets Asia is one of the world's most mythical places. Once the seat of the Roman empire, the Byzantine empire, and the Ottoman empire, Istanbul is packed with incredible historic sites like Topkapi Palace and the Hagia Sophia, as well as bustling markets like the Grand Bazaar and modern art museums. If you and your spouse enjoy exploring big, busy cities, then Istanbul might just be the place for you.

Where to Stay: Çirağan Kempinski Palace is a legendary grand dame in an Ottoman palace overlooking the Bosphorus where you and your spouse can bond during a Turkish hammam treatment. The Peninsula Istanbul is the city's buzzy new luxury hotel in the Galataport district.

Savannah, Georgia

Take a big dose of history, a pinch of southern hospitality, and excellent cuisine, stir them up and you've got the recipe for a great couples trip in Savannah. Established in 1733, this charming city has cobblestone streets lined with stately homes, parks full of live oaks and Spanish moss, great shops, and a fantastic restaurant and bar scene. According to some, the city is also very haunted and there are plenty of ghost tours led by guides who will point out haunted houses and tell dark tales of murder and mayhem.

Where to Stay: The Perry Lane Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel has a fun rooftop bar and a bit of a retro design. The Alida Savannah , a member of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, is housed in a converted warehouse on the riverfront and has a mid-century modern-inspired design.

Loire Valley, France

Loire Valley, France

Sure, Paris may be more popular for couples, but if you want to see another side of France, consider a romantic getaway to the Loire Valley. About an hour from Paris by train, the area is known for its many Renaissance castles and small villages that look like something out of a fairytale. Some of the best castles to visit are the Château de Chambord, the Château de Chenonceau, and the Château du Clos Lucé, where Leonardo Da Vinci lived. Wine lovers should plan to visit the wineries in Sancerre, which produce crisp white wines beloved around the world.

Where to Stay: Aside from visiting castles, you can stay in one. The Hôtel Château du Grand-Lucé was built in 1760 and has been restored to its original glory with precious antiques and manicured gardens. Les Hauts de Loire was built as a 19th-century hunting lodge and is now a Relais & Châteaux hotel known for its Michelin-starred restaurant and cooking school.

Marfa, Texas

Art-loving couples should plan to make a pilgrimage to Marfa, a little town near the Mexican border with an outsized art scene. Ever since Donald Judd moved here in the 1970s and created the Chinati Foundation on an old army base, the town has attracted an artsy crowd. Many little galleries have popped up around town and it might be the only place in the U.S. where hipsters rub elbows with cowboys at dive bars like the Lost Horse Saloon. It's also close to Big Bend National Park, so it would be easy to combine art-spotting in Marfa with a hiking trip.

Where to Stay: Hotel Saint George is the town's most design-forward place to stay. For couples who don't mind roughing it a bit, El Cosmico is a collection of airstream trailers, yurts, tents and teepees that draws a bohemian crowd.

Kyoto, Japan

Japanese traditions live on in Kyoto, where couples can visit Shinto shrines like the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha with its bright orange gates, partake in tea ceremonies, and explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Go in the spring for cherry blossom season or in the fall to admire the changing colors of the leaves. No matter when you go, you'll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious sushi, ramen, and other Japanese specialties and admire beautiful ceramics and other objects in the shops.

Where to Stay: Guests praise the wonderful staff, luxurious onsen, and delicious food at Hotel the Mitsui, a Luxury Collection Hotel . Ace Hotel Kyoto has a hip vibe and free bikes that guests can use to get around town.

Napa Valley and Sonoma County, California

Napa Valley

Not just an easy escape for San Franciscans, northern California wine country draws travelers from all over the U.S. and beyond. Savoring gastronomic delights at Michelin-starred restaurants, wine tastings, hot air balloon rides, and scenic bike rides are just some of the activities couples can enjoy in this bucolic region. The laid-back vibes make it easy for couples to unwind and reconnect.

Where to Stay: Guest reviews of Montage, Healdsburg say that the property "transcends expectations," with special mention of the professional staff and delicious cuisine. Foodies celebrating a special occasion should book a stay at Single Thread Farms , which is known for its Michelin three-star restaurant and personalized service.

Paros, Greece

For a Greek Island escape without the crowds, consider one of the smaller Cycladic islands such as Paros. Comprising a handful of whitewashed villages, sandy beaches, and hidden coves, Paros is coming onto the radar of savvy travelers. The main town of Naoussa has a lively port, cute boutiques, and plenty of bars and restaurants where you can sample traditional and creative Greek cuisine.

Where to Stay: Parilio , a member of Design Hotels, is a popular choice for honeymoons and minimoons. Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort has a great location right on the beach but within walking distance of Naoussa.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu, Peru

Adventurous couples ready to embark on a bucket list trip should set their sights on Machu Picchu in Peru. Start your trip with a few days in Cusco so you can get acclimated to the altitude before taking the luxurious Hiram Bingham train by Belmond up to the Incan citadel. Active travelers can also opt to hike the Inca Trail Route, which takes four days, or just hike the last section, which takes a day.

Where to Stay: Guests rave that Sanctuary Lodge, a Belmond Hotel is "above and beyond" and "well worth the price." Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a popular choice in Aguas Calientes, where you can catch the train that takes you to Machu Picchu.

Marrakech, Morocco

Morocco's most dynamic city is a feast for the senses. From the bustling markets like Jemaa El Fna to peaceful gardens and riads, there's so much to do. Cultured couples should make sure to visit the Musée Yves Saint Laurent and the Jardin Majorelle, haggle in the souks, and sip Moroccan mint tea or coffee at Bacha, a beautiful colonial-inspired café inside the Musée des Confluences. You can even do a sidecar tour of the medina with Marrakech Insiders.

Where to Stay: The Royal Mansour and La Mamounia are both members of the Leading Hotels of the World, so you can expect top notch service at both. The former was created by King Mohammed VI as a celebration of Moroccan artisanship, while the latter recently celebrated its centenary.

Sydney, Australia

If you and your sweetie are itching for a far-flung trip, consider a couples getaway to the land down under. Sydney is a popular choice, as it's got a winning combination of urban vibes and beautiful beaches. Aside from the famed opera house on the harbor, you'll find great museums and sites in the CBD, hip restaurants and bars in cool neighborhoods like Surry Hills, and sandy beaches like Bondi Beach, with its famous saltwater pool.

Where to Stay: The Old Clare Hotel is a hip boutique hotel with an industrial-chic design in a pair of heritage buildings in Chippendale. Prefer to stay by the beach? QT Bondi puts you right in the heart of Bondi Beach.

Luang Prabang, Laos

Ready to get off the beaten path? This under-the-radar Southeast Asian city may not have bucket list sites like Angkor Wat, but it's a beautiful, relaxing, and very affordable destination. A former French colony, it has a fascinating mix of French and Buddhist architecture and culture. You can do a sunset cruise on the Mekong, shop at the night market, visit Buddhist temples, and head out of town to swim in Kuang Si Falls.

Where to Stay: At the Avani+ Luang Prabang you'll get a luxurious experience without paying five-star hotel prices. Rosewood Luang Prabang is a romantic resort with a gorgeous design and excellent service.

Egypt

Ancient history and adventure collide in Egypt. Most tours of the country start in Cairo, with a visit to the Pyramids of Giza. In 2024, the Grand Egyptian Museum is finally slated to open, making it a great time to go. Then, of course, you should visit Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, where you can descend into incredibly preserved ancient tombs painted with figures and hieroglyphics. Cruise down the Nile and end in Aswan, visiting incredible temples along the way.

Where to Stay: Marriott Mena House in Cairo has views of the Pyramids, which can be seen from the manicured grounds. The Marsam Hotel in Luxor is popular among visiting archeologists. In Aswan, check into the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract , where Agatha Christie penned Death on the Nile .

Sparsely populated and mostly overlooked by PNW tourists, Lopez Island is an affordable alternative to more popular islands in the San Juan archipelago. Visiting Lopez Island during summer is perfect for couples looking for an affordable, laid-back escape.

One of the best things about Lopez Island is its under-commercialization. Rather than a tourist strip and chain restaurants, you’ll find local eateries and far more parks than tourist shops . In fact, most of this 15 mi long and 8-mile-wide island is forest or farmland. A few locally owned guesthouses and one hotel offer lodging for travelers who prefer to forgo the island’s incredible campgrounds.

Some of the free things to do on Lopez include flying a kite in the vast openness of Spencer Spit State Park , tidepool exploring at Shark Reef Sanctuary , or hiking to Iceberg Point . During your visit, be sure to ask locals about recent whale sightings. Lopez Island is one of the best ways to whale watch without the ethical and environmental problems of guided whale-watching tours. With local guidance- it’s possible to spot whales, bald eagles, and other sea life from the island’s rocky cliffs!

For extreme budget travelers, cozy up for a romantic night camping in one of the affordable public campgrounds and swap out your vehicle for a bike . Lopez Island’s mostly flat terrain and bike-friendly trails make it easily biked. You can rent a bike at Lopez Island Bicycle Works or bring your own.

By Lucy and Dan from Thoroughly Travel

Nestled in the center of the east coast of the Island of Hawaii, Hilo is a charming town with a laid-back vibe. Boasting volcanic beaches, lush rainforests, and secluded waterfalls , Hilo is one of the best budget-friendly destinations in Hawaii.

Thanks to its tropical climate and slow-paced way of life, Hilo is a cheaper alternative to the west coast of Big Island, which is littered with luxury resorts.

Most of the best things to do in Hilo are free, including relaxing at the many beach parks, seeing turtles, and visiting the iconic Rainbow Falls , while Akaka State Falls Park is only $5.

Featuring independent galleries and local restaurants, the town itself has plenty to see too. Liliuokalani Park and Gardens is a popular spot for relaxing in the summer sunshine, while couples can spend some quality time together at one of Hilo’s numerous boutique spas.

Kayaking in Boise, Idaho

By Faith from 3 Tickets Please

For the outdoor-loving couple, Boise is a wonderful cheap summer vacation spot. And with so many of the best things to do involving the beautiful and free outdoors, the city is also great on the budget.

Boise is best known for its access to outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and rafting . During the summer, couples can take advantage of the city’s proximity to the Boise River, which offers numerous great spots for rafting, kayaking, and tubing .

Boise also has a vibrant arts and culture scene . Boise is home to the Idaho Shakespeare Festival , where you are encouraged to pack a picnic with a bottle of wine and great eats to enjoy a night of theater under the stars.

The city also has a great music scene and some of it is free. On Wednesday nights, downtown is the place to be with the free concert series, Alive After Five.

Throughout the summer, the Idaho Botanical Gardens have a music festival. While you can certainly buy a ticket, couples on a budget can do what the locals do and hike into the foothills surrounding the venue and hear the music in nature’s best venue.

Most people visiting Boise want to be in the action of downtown Boise, which makes sense. But if you are on a budget, downtown is not a good fit. Instead, stay at Hotel 28 near Boise Airport .

Boise’s airport is minutes away from downtown. You can rent a car , but even better use Boise’s 3 Vista bus that transports you from your airport hotel to downtown in less than 10 minutes. You’ll save lots of money but won’t miss out on the experiences that make Boise amazing.

Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe

By Gabriel from Chef Travel Guide

Lake Tahoe is the perfect budget summer destination for couples who love the outdoors. The best part of a visit to this picturesque alpine lake is all the free activities that allow you to connect with nature.

Whether you want to explore the top attractions like Emerald Bay or trek up to Eagle Lake , the most you will have to pay for is parking.

You can hike from Vilkingsholm along the shore of Lake Tahoe on the Rubicon Trail , where you will discover hidden coves and a small secret beach.

Or, if you are up for a good challenge, you can hike up to Maggie’s peak , where you can relax and take in panoramic views of the entire Tahoe Basin.

If you feel like relaxing in nature, you can opt to head to any of the stunning beaches around the lake to catch some rays or have a picnic.

Another fun budget activity is to rent a paddleboard at Sand Harbor , where you can cruise around on the glassy water and take in the view of the surrounding mountains and the natural underwater rock garden.

There are countless affordable accommodations surrounding the lake, but a popular option is Basecamp South which features an onsite brewery with communal fire pits.

Another way to save a few dollars is to book a romantic vacation rental cabin , where you can cook a special meal or relax in a private hot tub on the deck.

You will be hard-pressed to find a better destination surrounded by nature for a budget getaway than Lake Tahoe.

Clearwater, Florida

Clearwater Beach, Clearwater, FL, USA

By Candice from Exploring the Gulf

Travel can be such a romantic and enjoyable experience to share with your significant other. But with the costs associated, it can also be a source of contention. It’s time to leave all your financial concerns behind and take a budget-friendly summer couple’s getaway to Clearwater.

Clearwater Beach is home to some of the most beautiful stretches of white sandy beach and crystal clear water . You’d be hard-pressed to find a more relaxing and enchanting setting to spend time with the one you love. And best of all, a day at the beach doesn’t carry much of a price tag.

Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach is also a fun and thrifty spot to unwind and soak up the Florida summer sun. You can walk the pier or take in the arts, crafts, and other festivities that go down at the pier every night at sunset. All without spending a dollar.

Clearwater motels offer some of the most affordable accommodations you’ll come across in this part of Florida. If you’re looking to save money on where you stay, consider veering away from flashy hotels and resorts.

Belleair Beach Resort Motel is a great example. A room at this property is significantly less expensive than one at a high-affluent Clearwater hotel, but you not only save at Belleair, you also get to enjoy the Motel’s private beach. It’s a win-win.

Don’t give up on the urge to travel just because it might seem financially out of reach. Clearwater is an inexpensive summer vacation spot that couples from all walks of life will enjoy!

Kanab, Utah

Kanab, The Wave

By Agnes from The Van Escape

Located on the Utah-Arizona border, the city of Kanab is the perfect base from which to explore the Southwest. The town is less famous than Springdale or Moab. It’s also less crowded, so prices are more affordable, and couples who love hiking and outdoor activities can have a perfect and budget-friendly vacation here.

There are many great things to do in Kanab that are free or only cost a few dollars. Great hiking trails, slot canyons, fantastic rock formations, and the desert won’t bore any adventurous couple.

A perfect example is the opportunity to hike one of the longest slot canyons in the world – Buckskin Gulch . You can hike there for a day or backpack for several days. The entrance fee is only a few dollars. It’s a great alternative to the expensive Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon in Page. And the experience is even better because you’re hiking a few miles and a full day by yourself, not just an hour with a tour.

Zebra Canyon and Red Canyon (also known as Peek-a-Boo Canyon) are free slot canyons in the Kanab area. For the second one, you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. But there’s a tip if you only have 2WD. You park your car and walk part of the way (2.5 miles) to the slot canyon.

If you’re in the Kanab area, you can also enter the Geofencing Lottery and try to win a permit to one of the most popular trails in the Southwest to the famous Wave formation.

But if you fail, don’t worry. You can take a romantic trip to Coral Pink Sand Dunes . The park is stunning and perfect for a walk on the dunes. It’s also a great place to take photos together. Packing a blanket and snacks in your backpack and having a romantic picnic in the deser t is a fantastic experience for couples.

Kanab is also an excellent base for day trips to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park , and the rarely visited but stunningly beautiful North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park .

Pack plenty of water, electrolytes, and sun protection for each trip or hike, as this is a desert area.

Affordable hotels in Kanab are Travelodge by Wyndham Kanab , Days Inn & Suites , and Sun -N- Sand Motel . If you book a hotel in advance, you can also find a higher standard accommodation at an affordable price.

Miami, Florida

Miami Beach

By Jackie from Bon Voyage Jackie

Most people don’t know this, but summer is actually the off-season for Miami travel. That makes it the perfect time of year for a budget-friendly Miami trip. While Miami does have a reputation for being an expensive vacation destination, it is surprisingly easy to plan a budget-friendly Miami trip.  2-3 days is the perfect amount of time to plan a quick getaway on a budget.

Flights to Miami are generally affordable from most major US airports. However, also take a look at prices to fly into nearby Fort Lauderdale airport as well. Fort Lauderdale is located about 45 minutes away by car from Miami, and while a taxi or Uber will cost anywhere between $45-100 depending on demand, there is a cheaper option to travel between the two cities. The Brightline train connects several South Florida cities and the route between Fort Lauderdale and Miami starts at just $15 one way.

Summertime is the most affordable time to travel to Miami, so hotel prices are at their lowest this time of year, especially if you can visit mid-week. Staying in the downtown area, Brickell, or Little Havana will offer the best rates for hotels. (The food and nightlife options and prices are much lower here than in Miami Beach as well)

Life House Little Havana is a retro-inspired, travel-lover’s dream. The hotel is housed in a restored 1920s building with decor inspired by tropical destinations around the globe. Relax in their lush courtyard or enjoy a craft cocktail from the rooftop bar.

Visiting the beach is always free. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Miami Beach Botanical Garden as well. Admission to the garden is completely free and you’ll be able to immerse yourself in nature and view beautiful tropical plants and flowers.

Parking can be expensive and hard to come by in Miami beach, so even if you have your own vehicle, taking a taxi or Uber to the beach if you’re staying downtown is wise. Depending on demand, rideshare fares from the downtown area to Miami beach typically range from $12-25.

Wynwood is an eclectic and artistic neighborhood near downtown Miami that is most famous for its street art display known as the Wynwood Walls . While the official art installation does charge an entrance fee of $10, exploring the neighborhood as a whole, which features a ton of amazing street art on every building, is free.

If you’d like to transport yourself to Europe for a day, be sure to visit the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens . The mansion was built in the style of a European villa and was the former home of businessman James Deering. The architecture and grounds are absolutely stunning. Admission to the museum is $25 for adults.

Every Thursday at 9 pm, the Little Havana bar and lounge Ball & Chain offers free salsa dance lessons . Be sure to stick around after to practice your skills, enjoy the live music, and a mojito or two.

Zion National Park, Utah

Zion National Park, UT, USA

By Jessica from Unearth The Voyage

Zion National Park is one of the most affordable places to visit in the US because most of everything you do there is free! It is also driving distance from Las Vegas, which has some really affordable flight options from all over the US.

Of course one of the best free things to do while visiting Zion is to go hiking . Make sure to check out the Narrows as well as Angel’s Landing while visiting. They are both rather intense hikes though, so if you’re looking for something a little more chill hike the Canyon Overlook Trail which will lead you to an incredible view out over the park.

Another great thing to do while visiting Zion is to go on a ranger-led walk where you can learn all about the park from a ranger.

Of course, if you’re visiting on a budget you are going to want to stay somewhere nice but affordable. If you’re planning to also visit Bryce Canyon, there are a ton of great and affordable options of places to stay between Zion and Bryce .

One of the best places is at Canyons Lodge- A Canyons Collection Property which offers gorgeous large rooms, an incredible view, and lots of cute places to hang out around the property as well as a pool. Overall, Zion is a super affordable destination and you’re bound to have a great time!

Pawhuska, Oklahoma

Pawhuska, Oklahoma

By Stephanie from Oklahoma Wonders

Pawhuska is a charming town in northeastern Oklahoma that’s been given a glamorous makeover in the past few years. Once a typical American small town, Pawhuska is now home to restaurants owned by Ree Drummond, the Food Network star known as the Pioneer Woman.

You’ll also find Hollywood film location s here since Pawhuska was used by Martin Scorsese to film the Leonardo Dicaprio movie Killers of the Flower Moon . You can even shop in the same stores that the Real Housewives of New Jersey shopped in during their Pawhuska vacation.

So while Pawhuska might seem like a slice of Americana on its own, it comes with a bit of a twist!

Even better than the fact that you can experience so many different sides of pop culture while you’re here is that so many of these things to do here are completely free. You can walk around and see the filming locations on your own without spending a penny, you can visit the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve to see the conservation efforts of the American Bison for free, and you can even tour the Pioneer Woman’s Lodge where she films her tv show for free.

Restaurants in town range from down-home and inexpensive to glitzy but well-priced. Ree owns the Pioneer Woman’s Mercantile and P-Town Pizza. While the food is first-class, the prices are still set so locals can enjoy them on a regular basis.

While in town you can stay at the Hotel Whiting or even camp at nearby Osage Hills State Park.

Lima, Peru

By Alex from Career Gappers

Destinations in South America might not be at the top of your list when considering cheap summer vacations for couples. But Lima, the culture-rich capital of Peru , is possible to visit from the USA without spending a fortune.

Flying from Miami to Lima takes less than six hours, and it is possible to buy return flights for under $300 in the summer months. Cheap direct flights are also available from many other US cities. And once you arrive, Lima is a very cheap place for food, accommodation, and experiences , which more than balances out the extra it might cost to travel there.

Summer in the USA coincides with winter in Peru, but this is actually a great time to visit Lima. The climate is still very warm from June through to August, and this is also Peru’s dry season , so you are not likely to get much rain.

Lima is a huge city that is steeped in centuries of history, having once been the capital of the entire Spanish Empire in South America. Its historic center is characterized by colorful old colonial buildings , romantic plazas, and majestic churches .

Your budget trip to Lima could include a stroll around these streets, perhaps on one of the various local free walking tours , and then at night, you could see the illuminated water fountain show at El Circuito Mágico del Agua , which costs just 4 Peruvian soles (about 1 US dollar).

Money goes a long way for accommodation in Lima. For less than 100 US dollars a night, you can stay somewhere beautiful like Hotel Antigua in Miraflores, a vibrant, safe neighborhood that makes the perfect base for exploring the city.

With so many different areas of the city to explore, it is best to plan at least 2 days in Lima . For an extended trip, you could spend 3/4 days in the city and then head onwards to the desert oasis village of Huacachina , or take a trip to the ancient hilltop ruins of Rúpac , an alternative to Machu Picchu that is much closer to the capital.

Mexico City, Mexico

Vegan Tacos

By Jase from Roaming Vegans

While many people are drawn to Mexico’s coastlines, Mexico City is a more budget-friendly option that is more aligned with those who want to experience the ‘real’ Mexico.

One of the highlights of Mexico, or CDMX as it’s often called, is its food – particularly its vegan scene which is one of the best in the world. You can find incredibly cheap, all-vegan Mexican street food stands, fresh churros, fancy pink tacos, and an unmissable fishless seafood street taco stall. As mentioned, CDMX prices are a fraction of what you’ll pay at the resorts in Cancun, so you can truly eat your heart out.

When you’re not indulging in Mexico City’s finest foods, you can explore its rich cultural history, street art, and its huge relaxing parks like Chapultepec Park , which is one of the largest city parks in the world. At Chapultepec, which is free to enter, you can enjoy a romantic picnic, rent a boat on the lake, or explore the many museums and monuments located within the park (for a small fee).

While staying in Mexico City , the suburbs of Roma and Condesa are the most popular, but also the most expensive. If you want to be in these areas, you can save a little extra money by choosing to stay in Roma Sur rather than Roma Norte, with Norte tending to be the most expensive suburb in CDMX. Roma Sur is a little grungier than the upscale Norte, but just as safe and more authentic.

Isle of Barra, Scotland

Isle of Barra, Scotland

By Kristin from Scotland Explored

The Isle of Barra is in the Outer Hebrides, a group of islands north of mainland Scotland. Barra is a small island but it boasts a wide variety of outdoor activities . It is the perfect summer destination for couples looking for an inexpensive romantic vacation. And best of all, most of the things to do on the island are free.

Barra has amazing beaches which look like they could be in the Caribbean. There is nothing better than walking along the pretty beaches and most of the time you will have them all to yourself. One exception is Traigh Mhor which also doubles as the landing strip for the island’s airport. At low tide planes from Glasgow land on the beach and this is the only time it might feel like there are lots of other tourists on the island.

For fantastic views over Castlebay and Vatersay, hike up to the statue of The Lady of the Sea at Heaval . It takes about one hour to get to the statue from where you can either go back down or continue on to the mountains behind.

Castlebay is the largest village and it has a picturesque castle in the middle of the bay. This is also where the ferry arrives and departs.

The cheapest way to get to Barra is to fly to Glasgow and get the ferry from Oban .

On the island B&Bs such as Tigh na Mara in Castlebay and Sealladh na Mara close to the airport cost £90 to £115 per night. The most affordable and popular places to stay on the island are self-catering cottages which work out much cheaper than staying in a B&B or hotel. Sealladh na Mara also has a self-catering cottage and another good option is Crofters Cottage by Eoligarry.

Istanbul mosque at sunset

By Sasha from Mog and Dog Travels

Stretching across the continents of Europe and Asia, with a buzzing culinary scene, pulsating nightlife, rich history, and magnificent skyline , Istanbul in Turkey is a city that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Despite being the country’s largest city and receiving millions of tourists each year, Istanbul is an ideal destination for couples looking for a budget-friendly summer vacation.

Istanbul was once the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires and has many historical landmarks , some of which are free to enter. These include the stunning Hagia Sophia mosque , once the largest cathedral in the world;  the Blue Mosque , famous for its 20,000 handpainted tiles and the Suleymaniye mosque which has amazing views across the waters of the Golden Horn.

Other attractions such as the gorgeous Topkapi Palace Museum , formerly the residence of the Ottoman sultans, and the Galata Tower , which boasts a 360° view of Istanbul, require a ticket. If you’re in Istanbul for several days and plan on visiting these sites or want to explore any of the other amazing museums in the city, it’s worth buying a 5-day Istanbul Museum pass which gives you free or discounted entry into many ticketed tourist sites.

Istanbul is also an incredibly picturesque and romantic city. Take a leisurely stroll around the historic neighborhood of Balat , famous for its quaint cobbled streets, charming cafes, and brightly colored Ottoman mansions. In the late afternoon, make your way to the Galata Bridge to watch a magnificent sunset over the waters of the Bosphorus.

A fantastic public transport system makes traveling around Istanbul cheap and convenient. It’s a much better option than taking the city’s overpriced taxis.

There is a wide range of places to stay in Istanbul and plenty of budget-friendly hotels . Dreamers V&V Hotel located in the bohemian area of Cihangir is close to cafes, supermarkets, and restaurants and offers comfortable rooms with complimentary breakfast.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

By Jessica from Uprooted Traveler

La Fortuna is the perfect place for a cheap romantic summer vacation, complete with hot springs tucked away in the jungle, turquoise waterfalls, and endless adventures to have together.

While there are tons of things to do in La Fortuna , this city, located at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, is primarily known for its hot springs. While many of the hot springs here are quite pricey, you can definitely find some that are on the more affordable side, including the very romantic Ecotermales Hot Springs .

Alternatively, you can even find a totally free, natural hot spring, tucked into the rainforest, outside of the grounds of the luxurious (and very expensive) Tabacon Hot Springs Resort and Spa. Just get here early if you want the place to yourself!

Costa Rica is known for its vast biodiversity and one of the best ways to experience its wildlife is to go on a hike in one of its ecological parks . For example, you can visit Arenal National Park for less than $20 a person and spend all day exploring the trails, keeping your eyes peeled for capuchins, howler monkeys, and sloths. If nothing else, you’ll have jaw-dropping views of the Arenal Volcano during your adventures!

The Arenal Volcano Inn perfectly melds affordable lodging (under $100 a night!) with luxurious touches- like, for example, every room offers a view of the nearby volcano and in-room whirlpools. Relax in the inn’s hot tub, nestled inside the jungle, and watch the sunrise together before your day’s adventures.

Northern Spain

Fuenta De Picos, Spain

By Colleen from Then We Walked

Northern Spain is an amazing destination for budget-conscious travelers. With stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and endless beaches , northern Spain is an absolute peach!  And it’s still possible to bag a bargain on flights to Madrid or Bilboa.

If you love the outdoors the breathtaking Picos de Europa are for you; renting a car from 21€ a day gives you the freedom to explore this hiker’s paradise.  Stay in the mountain town of Potes , where a traditional casa rural like Casa Cayo , costs 90€ for bed and breakfast and a 3-course Menu Del Dia from as little as 20€ (including bread and wine).

Wine connoisseurs should head to La Rioja . Santo Domingo de la Calzada was founded in the 10th century, has a medieval center, an impressive cathedral, and Rioja wine! Treat yourself to a night in the luxurious Parador for 115€  (become an Amigo and get free wine too).

If you like hiking, you should consider hiking part of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela , either planning a day hike or a multi-day adventure, depending on how much time you have.

If you prefer cities, explore some of Spain’s most iconic!  There’s beautiful Bilbao , home of the Guggenheim, Pamplona with Hemmingway’s beloved Café Iruna.  For foodies, San Sebastian and Logrono are must-visit cities.

Spanish train and bus networks offer great value, with Madrid to Bilbao at just 37€ and San Sebastian by train at only 39€.

Accommodation options are plentiful so don’t hesitate if your budget is tight; even pricey San Sebastian offers highly rated places like Old Town Homestay for under 100€. And if you’re visiting a city, make sure you book a Guru-Guide walking tour; free but they ask for a donation.

Take a road trip and visit them all , adding Burgos to your itinerary with its impressive gothic cathedral and UNESCO Museum of Human Evolution (and nearby Atapuerca, thought to be 900,000 years old.)

And if all of this isn’t enough, you still have the absolutely stunning coast to discover!

Cartagena, Colombia

Colonial Street in Cartagena, Colombia

By Adam from Cartagena Explorer

Cartagena, Colombia makes for a terrific budget-friendly summer destination for couples. Colombia’s Caribbean jewel has year-round warm weather , perfect for the nearby beaches . However, what really sets it apart is the historic, and incredibly romantic, colonial city. What can be more romantic than strolling narrow streets surrounded by colorful former mansions with flower-covered balconies?

Couples will also want to take a stroll along the historic walls and enjoy the views of the Caribbean. While there are terrific drinks to go with the view of the sunset at Hotel Movich’s rooftop bar or Café del Mar , located atop a corner of the wall, vendors also sell cheaper drinks along the wall , and enjoying the sunset here is one of the most romantic things to do in Cartagena. The former cannon openings make for the perfect, private feeling view!

Besides enjoying the charm of the historic district, there are lots of other things to do in Cartagena. The neighboring Getsemaní district has its own neat historic charm mixed with eclectic hipster vibes. This is also where lots of the best street art in the city is located. There are also many moderately priced cafes, bars, and restaurants here. At night, the Plaza de la Trinidad becomes a popular hang-out spot for locals and tourists alike.

Most travelers, but especially couples, will prefer staying in the historic district. Places like Casa India Catalina , Hotel Don Pedro de Heredia , Hotel Boutique Casa Isabel , and Hotel Casa Tere , offer nice budget-friendly accommodations.

One thing budget-minded travelers might want to splurge on is for a day trip or even an overnight stay out in the nearby Rosario Islands . These gorgeous coral islands, surrounded by crystal clear waters, offer much better beaches and fewer crowds than the beaches in Cartagena proper.

IslaBela , which has one of the best beach areas, has reasonably priced bungalows and day passes and would be perfect to include as part of a budget-friendly couple’s trip to Cartagena!

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal

By Claire of Europe in Winter

Step on a TAP Airline flight from multiple cities across the USA and disembark in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal ’s buzzing capital.

Lisbon’s always been a popular city, but in recent years it’s become even more well-loved for its charming (but hilly!) streets, fascinating history, and rich gastronomy. Plus, it’s wonderfully sunny throughout the warmer season!

The city’s wonderful to just walk around; explore downtown and the hilly areas on a free walking tour (you’re expected to tip) with SANDEMANS New Europe Tours . You’ll learn about its dynamic history and see some local spots that you wouldn’t find otherwise!

Board a train and head to Sintra , a fairytale palace and UNESCO site that dates back to the 15th century. Or, head down the coast to Belem Castle , which is where 16th-century Portuguese explorers disembarked from.

Don’t forget to try some Portuguese food – Damas is an excellent restaurant that serves Portuguese tapas and has an extensive menu.

The city can be quite warm in the summertime, so once you’ve enjoyed its culture, head out to Cascais , which is one of Lisbon’s beachy suburbs. Here, you can relax on the beach, enjoying the coastal breeze, or even take a surfing lesson .

The waves are biggest in Lisbon in the winter – when they attract professional surfers from around the world – but the summer months are ideal for beginners or improvers.

For accommodation, MOXY Hotel Lisbon offers chic, well-appointed accommodation right in the city center. You’ll also find more basic and cheap accommodation options, such as the well-rated Mana Guest House offering rooms under $50 a night.

27 Best Vacation Spots for Every Type of Couple

By Siobhan Reid

The best vacation spots for couples are steeped in timeless romance. Whether it’s a cruise down the Nile or a saunter through sultry Buenos Aires, some places have simply mastered the art of seduction.

Still, no vacation is one size fits all, and while some couples want to escape to the golden sands of the Caribbean, other people’s idea of romance might look like a getaway to South Africa’s wine country, or seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland.

So, how to  plan a romantic getaway tailor-made for two? “My favorite piece of advice is to leave room for spontaneity,” says luxury travel advisor Amina Dearmon, the founder and owner of  Perspectives Travel . “Our lives are already so over-scheduled, it’s important to have the freedom to do absolutely nothing and enjoy each other’s company, no matter which destination you choose.”

For  domestic trips , she loves the wellness-focused resorts in Arizona like  Canyon Ranch Tucson  and the soon-to-reopen  Mii Amo . As for international destinations, she recommends the Caribbean islands of Anguilla, Dominica, and St. Lucia, as well as Venice, Italy. And if you’re going to splurge, Dearmon suggests balling out on your  accommodations (“It’s your home away from home”) and opting for extras like VIP meet and greets at the airport (“It’s a service that makes up a small percentage of your total trip cost, but it can make the biggest difference in your travel day.”).

To get a jumpstart on your planning, here are the 27 best vacation spots for couples, whether you crave a blissed-out spa getaway, a culinary vacation, or an adventure-packed itinerary.

Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel, Anguilla

For beach bliss, cookbook author and “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons recommends a romantic getaway to  Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel on Anguilla. “Cap Juluca’s beach is as pristine as it gets, with its long strip of powder-white sand, crystal clear water, and views of St. Maarten in the distance,” she says. “Plus, you never have to fight for a beach chair or show up super early, since there’s plenty of room and the staff always has an umbrella set up before you’ve even arrived.” When Simmons and her husband weren’t lounging on golden sands, they went paddleboarding, hit the tennis court, enjoyed massages at the spa, and even went on a snorkeling excursion. The highlight was all the quality time the pair spent together: “I loved how private and remote Cap Juluca felt,” says Simmons. “At times it felt like we were on our very own island.”

La Co(o)orniche, Pyla-Sur-Mer

What could be more romantic than waking up to views of Europe’s biggest sand dune? At this Philippe Starck-designed  hotel in the seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer, couples enjoy panoramic views of Arcachon Bay and the mesmerizing Dune du Pilat from their beachy-chic guestrooms. Most visitors flock to the area to climb the magnificent dune, which rises 374 feet above sea level, but we won’t blame you for lazing on the sandy beach, breathing in the head-clearing scent of the pine forest.

Fernando De Noronha, Brazil

Brazil is spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a place more blessed with natural beauty than Fernando de Noronho, a volcanic archipelago about 220 miles off the northeast coast of Brazil. Perhaps the dreamiest spot to spend the day with your significant other is Baia do Sancho, on the archipelago’s main island. The protected cove is the picture of earthly paradise, with forest-covered cliffs and azure waters home to colorful fish, dolphins, and sea turtles.

Con Dao Archipelago, Vietnam

Looking for beachside seclusion? Skip Vietnam’s over-trammeled Phu Quoc and head to the isolated Con Dao archipelago instead. The remote islands are perfect for privacy-seekers: 83 percent of the archipelago is protected by the Con Dao National Park.  The most luxurious place to lay your head is the  Six Senses Con Dao , an eco-resort backed by the Lo Voi Mountains and located on a mile-long private beach. It’s worth peeling yourself away from your seaside villa for a guided hike along the coast to Dam Tre Bay, arguably the archipelago’s most photogenic beach, with forested hills and dramatic granite cliffs.

Tofino, Canada

For couples seeking rugged natural beauty and mist-shrouded coastal landscapes, it’s hard to top Tofino on Vancouver Island. The windswept town has no shortage of beaches primed for romance: Stroll hand in hand along the 10-mile Long Beach, enjoy a picnic with views of Clayoquot Sound at Tonquin Beach, or take a couple’s surf lesson at Cox Bay Beach. And while there are plenty of  beautiful Airbnbs available to rent, the oceanfront  Wickaninnish Inn —one of Canada’s most legendary hotels—epitomizes bucket-list romance.

  Anse Source d’Argent Seychelles

There’s a reason Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned in the Seychelles. The Indian Ocean archipelago offers island romance par excellence, with luxurious resorts, off-the-grid adventures, and, of course, stunning beaches, the most famous being the Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue. It really doesn’t get more photogenic than this iconic stretch of sand, known for its shallow waters, imposing granite boulders, and swaying coconut palms. For a less-crowded—but no less picturesque option—hike three hours to Anse Marron, a remote beach on the southern tip of La Digue.

There are few destination spas as singular as this 62-suite  hotel , built into an 800-year-old lava field on the southwest side of Iceland’s famous lagoon. It’s an otherworldly place to spend a few days, kicking back in the Scandi-chic guestrooms, soaking in the thermal hot springs, and indulging in a seven-course chef’s tasting menu at the lagoon-level restaurant. You and your partner will feel weightless as you float in the mineral-rich waters, looking out at the surreal moss-fringed landscape. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights may even dance across the sky.

One&Only Mandarina, Mexico

Author and interior designer  Athena Calderone fell head over heels for  One&Only Mandarina , a destination resort on Riviera Nayarit’s wild Pacific Coast. “The spa was an absolute dream—the entire experience was luxurious and elegant,” she says, referencing an all-natural Tata Harper facial that left her glowing. She also loved the treehouse accommodations and the resort’s intimate dining options, like the open-air Alma restaurant helmed by French-Mexican chef Olivier Deboise. “The property is the perfect respite for couples,” she says.

Six Senses Fort Barwara, Rajasthan

Give your loved one the royal treatment at this 14 th -century fort turned 48-suite  hotel . Commanding a hilltop perch above Barwara Lake, the thoughtfully restored complex channels the glamor of a bygone era. Splurge on the Raja Man Singh Pool Suite, which features a pool and garden enclosed within a turret and views of the Chauth ka Barwara Mandir Temple and the Aravali hills. There are daily wellness activities like sunrise yoga and traditional  puja  ceremonies at sunset. But for the ultimate indulgence, retreat to the 30,000-square-foot spa for stress-relieving shirodhara treatments and cutting-edge biohacking therapies.

Troutbeck, New York

At this sophisticated  country manor in New York’s Hudson Valley, it’s all about communing with nature while enjoying luxe amenities (deep-soaking tubs, fireplaces, and Frette linens). Robust wellness programming rounds out the itinerary, with activities like pilates classes in a high-ceilinged barn, private tennis lessons at the food of Oblong Mountain, and cycling adventures along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. It’s the perfect weekend getaway for active couples—but the 38-room hotel is just as suited for relaxation. Stroll through the formal gardens, sign up for acupuncture treatments or massage, and if the weather’s nice, hang out by the swimming pool under the shade of sycamore trees.

Capella Ubud, Bali

This riverside  jungle camp in Bali’s lush Keliki Valley is a favorite destination among  honeymooners , but trust us, it’s far too special to only visit once in your lifetime. The setting is truly sublime, with 23 tented rooms spread over a terraced hillside flanked by paddy fields and dense rainforest. At the Auriga Spa , treatments draw on ancient Balinese and Hindu healing traditions and are accompanied by the sounds of the rainforest. More adventurous couples can go trekking through the Keliki rice paddies or sign up for a G.I Jungle outdoor training session.

Glacier treks and hair-raising hikes in Patagonia, Argentina

End-of-the-world landscapes and out-of-this-world adventures are all part of the experience in Argentinian Patagonia. Thrill-chasers should strap on their ice shoes and trek along the majestic Perito Moreno Glacier, a vast shield of ice whose surface is slightly larger than Buenos Aires, while wildlife lovers can glimpse giant Humpback whales, penguins, and sea lions in Ushuaia, South America’s southernmost city. For the ultimate bonding experience, attempt the 13-mile Laguna de Los Trek hike in El Chalten, which will bring you to the foot of the mighty Mount Fitz Roy.

Wildlife sightings and outdoor adventures in Arenal Volcano National Park Costa Rica

The beauty of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano National Park is that you can do as much—or as little—as you want and still have a great time. This is especially true of couples who choose to bed down at the adults-only  Nayara Springs , a collection of luxurious private villas with plunge pools, gardens, outdoor showers, and show-stopping views of the Arenal Volcano. Off-property adventures include white-water rafting expeditions down the Sarapiqui River, visits to the 195-foot waterfall in the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, and a photo tour of the lava fields.

A luxury train ‘safari’ through Namibia

The best way to explore the vast, sun-baked desert of Namibia? By train, of course! On a nine-night safari journey with the ultra-glamorous  Rovos Rail , you and your partner will traverse some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes, including the Succulent Karoo desert, the red dunes of the Sossusvlei dry lake, and the Walvis Bay tidal lagoon. You’ll make plenty of stops along the way, so you can fully appreciate the wide-open views and snap photos of the wildlife. To travel in style, splurge on the wood-paneled Royal Suite sleeper coach.

Dude ranch adventures in Utah

Studies show that couples who actively try new things together are less likely to fall into a rut. Well, we don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better relationship-building exercise than learning the “art of cowboying” at Utah’s  Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection . Set on a 3,500-acre private working ranch a half-hour from Salt Lake City, the hotel offers a range of equine adventures suited for amateurs and experienced riders alike—instruction in English riding, rides through the flower-covered meadows of the Wasatch Mountains, and even a breathwork session in the stable.

A road trip along Australia’s Great Ocean Road

The open road offers complete spontaneity and freedom of choice—the perfect option for couples who like to leave extra room for scenic detours. For the ultimate road trip itinerary, set your sights on Australia’s Great Ocean Road, a 150-mile stretch that winds around the country’s scenic southern coast. Says Stuart Rigg, owner of  Southern Crossings Australia : “The Great Ocean Road offers captivating landscapes, charming seaside towns, fabulous food and wine experiences, and great opportunities to get outdoors with the one you love.” While he notes that the route is best known for its iconic limestone rock formations like the iconic 12 Apostles, he notes that there are plenty of other photo ops and attractions along the way. Among them: towering Californian Redwoods in Otway National Park, the Kennett River Koala Walk, and the highly-award Wickens restaurant at the Royal Mail Hotel.

A cruise down the Nile River

Egypt’s Nile River is so mythical, even Cole Porter crooned about it in his love songs. To cruise it in style, opt for a six-day itinerary with  Nour el Nil on a traditional flat-bottomed  dahabiya  sailboat. As you journey from Esna to Aswan, you and your sweetheart will float past reed-covered banks, the dunes of the Sahara, and ancient monuments like the Gebel El Silsila Temple that other large ships can’t reach.

Napa Valley, California

Wine tastings, hot-air balloon rides, pilgrimage-worthy dining, chic boutique hotels. No place does romance quite like Napa Valley. And while you could easily spend weeks discovering the region’s wineries and restaurants, there are a few spots that couples shouldn’t miss. At Sullivan Rutherford Estate, enjoy a private Cab Sauv tasting and tour of the sculpted gardens before settling in for a nine-course tasting menu at Thomas Keller’s lauded  French Laundry. Or swing by Gott’s Roadside to pick up a milkshake and old-fashioned burger before catching the sunset at Skyline Wilderness Park. The recently reborn  Poetry Inn is probably the region’s most swoon-worthy stay, with just five rooms boasting vineyard views, sweeping private terraces, and soaking tubs.

The Lake District, England

The English Lake District has long attracted outdoor enthusiasts who come to scale the U.K.’s highest peaks But in recent decades, the verdant region in northwest England has emerged as a gastronomic hotspot. It all started in 2002 when British chef Simon Rogan—one of the pioneers of the farm-to-table movement—opened his now-famous  L’Enclume in the quaint village of Cartmel. The three-starred Michelin restaurant is known for putting inventive spins on classic dishes using organic produce from Rogan’s 12-acre farm. Since then, plenty of other high-end restaurants have set up shop, like the acclaimed British-Asian  Blackbull  in Sedbergh and the  Old Stamp House in Ambleside. Now the region has become somewhat of a food pilgrimage, popular among couples craving haute cuisine and gastronomic-centered hotels like  Linthwaite House and  Our Rooms by L’Enclume .

Emilia Romagna, Italy

Every corner of Italy has something to offer from a culinary perspective. But only the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna can lay claim to 44 DOP food products including Parmigiano Reggiano, tortellini, and ragù bolognese. Begin your eatathon in the region’s capital, Bologna. With only one Michelin-starred restaurant in the entire city (yes, really), couples will have to do their own research, strolling the city’s grand porticos in search of the best osteria and trattorias. From Bologna, the options are limitless: visit family-run vinegar producers in Modena; try Culatello, the most prestigious of all cured meats, in Parma; and develop a taste for Lambrusco in Reggio Emilia. And for a no-expenses-spared date night out, there’s only one place to know about: Massimo Bottura’s renowned  Osteria Francescana in Modena.

As a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures, Singapore is one of the world’s great food cities—and a real feast for travelers hungry for food  and  culture. And sure, there are temples of fine dining galore (we’re looking at you,  Odette ), but some of the city’s best bites come from unassuming local vendors at the city’s legendary hawker centers. At the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, sample everything from fragrant laksa soup and Chinese steamed buns to piping-hot clay pot rice. For date night, make reservations at the renowned  Atlas Bar , a vaulted space with Art Deco flair and the world’s largest gin collection. Even the city’s Jewel Changi Airport is a culinary wonderland with 100+ eateries, allowing couples to make the most of their every meal in the food-obsessed city.

South Africa’s Wine Country

From stunning Cape Dutch-style architecture and world-class restaurants to luxurious wine country hotels, South Africa’s wine country is truly suited to all tastes. After checking in at  Delaire Graff Estates , a boutique hotel and winery near Stellenbosch, toast to your romantic getaway with a bottle of méthode cap classique (South Africa’s version of Champagne). You’ll want to set aside a few days to go wine tasting in Stellenbosch and the neighboring regions Franschhoek, Paarl, and Constantia, where the grape to seek out is Pinotage, South Africa’s flagship variety. For a vacation memory that’ll age like fine wine, splurge on the tasting menu at  Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia .

Aman Kyoto Japan Hotel

For art and culture around every corner

It’s no secret that the French capital is a cultural powerhouse. But it’s not always easy to escape the crowds and enjoy the cultural treasures for yourself—or is it? According to the uber-stylish Parisian hoteliers Anouk and Louis Solanet of  Orso hotel group, there are plenty of lesser-known gems even in popular neighborhoods like Montmartre (you just need to know where to look). One of the couple’s favorite spots is the Musée de la vie Romantique , a literary museum situated at the base of Montmartre and set within the former house of Dutch painter Ary Scheffer. “We love to sit in silence in the hidden garden, which smells of roses and lilacs,” says Anouk. Afterwards, they recommend grabbing a drink at  Hotel Rochechouart ’s rooftop, which offers dead-on views of the Sacré Coeur. On the Left Bank, the couple loves strolling through the Jardin du Luxembourg and on to Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, one of the streets that inspired Woody Allen’s  Midnight in Paris,  and finally to the Giacometti Foundation—“A jewel of Parisian museum,” says Louis—which is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

Lausanne, Switzerland

Switzerland’s fourth-largest city is straight out of a fairytale, with a medieval Old Town and vertiginous streets that rise above the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva. It’s also one of the country’s most underrated arts hubs, thanks to the recent opening of  Platforme 10 , a striking new art district home to three of the city’s major art museums. For couples who prefer to see art en plein air, go on a cultural scavenger hunt to locate 82 works scattered throughout the hillside city (don’t miss Clelia Bettua’s sculptural weather vane at the Port of Ouchy). To cap off a perfect day, catch a show at the newly modernized Théâre de Vidy before retiring at the  Hôtel Royal Savoy Lausanne , a grand castle-like property that wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson flick. The hotel has a sublime spa, a rooftop terrace overlooking the lake, and an unbeatable location near all the top cultural spots.

Buenos Aires

Is there a city sexier than Buenos Aires? There’s something sultry about Argentina’s capital, from its dimly-lit tango bars and balmy weather to its heady mix of South American and European influences. After catching a tango performance at the city’s best-known milonga, La Catedral , continue your cultural immersion at the Teatro Colon —one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses—where Igor Stravinsky has performed, Rudolph Nureyev has danced, and Maria Callas has sung. From there, it’s a short walk to  El Ateneo Grand Splendid , a bookstore occupying a former theater and featuring century-old ceiling frescos. But to really feel the spirit of the city, couples should spend an afternoon in the colorful La Boca neighborhood, where there are vibrant murals, live music, and views of the Riachuelo River.

Venice, Italy

“Venice is pure magic,” says Amina Dearmon of Perspectives Travel. “I love being able to wander the streets, stop at an osteria for an Aperol Spritz, and watch the sunset from the Accademia Bridge.” Like so many Italian cities, Venice is like an open-air museum, brimming with art and culture at every turn. Its narrow streets and atmospheric squares are packed with heavy-hitting institutions, too, like the  Peggy Guggenheim Collection , the  Doge’s Palace , and the  Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro . First-time visitors shouldn’t miss a side trip to Murano, the second-largest island in the Venetian lagoon, to learn about its long tradition of glassmaking at the  Venice Glass Museum .

The former imperial capital of Japan is home to more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In any other city, the sheer volume of culture would be head-spinning. But in Kyoto, it’s a pleasure to stroll around the peaceful temple gardens, traditional teahouses, and ancient storefronts, feeling transported to an earlier time. Top landmarks include the famous orange torii gates at the Fushimi Inari shrine, the celebrated Kiyomizu Temple, and the impressive Nijo Castle. If the budget allows, spend the night at the new  Aman Kyoto , a sanctuary-like retreat set on 80 acres of hilly woodland in the north of the city, a stone’s throw from the golden Kinkaku-ji Temple.

25 Best Vacation Spots for Couples

Planning a romantic getaway? Here are the best couples' vacation spots around the world to visit with your special someone.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

cheap travel destinations for couples

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy — and enjoying uninterrupted one-on-one time as you visit new places together. A trip with your significant other, whether domestic or international, almost always guarantees you'll learn something new about one another — perhaps your girlfriend gets a rush from cliff diving, or your boyfriend can make friends with anyone despite only being able to say one phrase in the local language.

When you're deciding where you want to go, consider which components of a romantic getaway matter most to you. Are you up for sightseeing and doing outdoorsy activities together or do you lean more toward enjoying quiet moments in intimate settings with a view?

For instance, couples looking for a chance to fully unwind might opt for a beach vacation or spa weekend in a beautiful destination, while those searching for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure may want to book an African safari. Foodie couples might want to eat their way through Paris's fine restaurants, while more active travelers may prefer to hit the slopes or go snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

Whatever your travel style, here are 25 of the best vacation spots for couples.

Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

If your version of romance is hiking through monkey forests and rolling rice paddies — or dancing to DJ sets and light shows until the wee hours of the morning — head to Bali, a beautiful Indonesian isle known for its vibrant nightlife scene. Stroll hand-in-hand on white-sanded shores in the southern part of the island or by the volcanic black sand beaches of its northern and eastern coasts. In addition to historic temples and shrines, Bali is also home to heaps of high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes worth checking out during your trip.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber / Travel + Leisure

Visiting Santorini is like traveling to a cloud-like oasis that envelops you in an ethereal fantasy. In other words, there's no surprise as to why it's a popular choice among newlyweds looking for a picture-perfect honeymoon destination . The romance of the island pretty much sells itself; wandering the hilly, weathered streets, you'll be surrounded by bright white walls and blue roofs, while in the evenings, you'll have front-row seats to incredible sunsets. Once the sun is down, the island really lights up, with its houses, churches, and restaurants glowing like stars.

Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Ashour Rehana / Getty Images

Aside from traveling to Tanzania to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, many make the trip to see the country's incredible wildlife conservation sites and national parks. Going on a safari allows you and your significant other to share some unique firsts: the first time you see a lion, the first time you drive across the African plains, dotted with baobab trees, or the first time you meet someone from the local Indigenous community, to name a few.

You'll want to visit Ngorongoro Crater , the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. Its bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area's mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, its large lion population, and the sheer diversity of habitats and animals you'll find here.

Tulum, Mexico

NurPhoto / Getty Images

Two core pillars of many romantic vacations are relaxing in intimate settings and enjoying exciting experiences, and Tulum has plenty of chances for you to do both. Rotate between lounging out on tropical beaches, snorkeling at nearby Xel-Ha Park , swimming in a natural sinkhole (or cenote), and touring ancient Mayan ruins, many of which are still intact. After a perfect day in Tulum , packed with leisure, adventure, or both, the cherry on top will be grabbing a drink at Gitano and relishing in its funky jungle atmosphere.

Whistler, Canada

A great way to bond as a couple is by getting active, and skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is great for both veteran and beginner skiers alike. Take on the mountains, offering numerous trails of varying intensity, enjoy an overhead view of the snow-capped trees from sprawling gondolas, break for lunch at the mid-mountain lodge, and top off your day with an après ski special at one of the slope-side bars. If one day of skiing leaves you with wobbly legs and your fill of downhill action, there's a lot more going on at the base of the peaks. Whistler Village is a lively, pedestrian-only hub of bars, shops, and restaurants. The little winter wonderland is as charming as the inside of a snow globe, and what's better for a romantic getaway than that?

Cappadocia, Turkey

UIG / Getty Images

For a fairytale vacation, there's nothing more fitting than a landscape dotted with "fairy chimneys," the tall, thin cones topping the many rock sites of Cappadocia. Cave churches, underground cities, and homes carved into the rocks work to create a whimsical aura usually reserved for the fictional realm. Floating high above the rocky terrain in a brightly-designed hot air balloon , you'll feel like characters wandering the pages of a Dr. Seuss book (or like astronauts discovering a civilization on the moon). Either way, the otherworldly experience will have you recapturing your sense of childlike wonder and awe together.

Paris, France

Most clichés became clichés for a reason, and so is the case with Paris' romantic reputation. Looking at pictures of couples in the City of Light, you can practically see the cartoon hearts in their eyes as they embrace in front of the Eiffel Tower. Paris and romance go together like Valentine's Day and chocolate, anniversary dinners and candlelit bistros, marriage proposals and world-famous landmarks… all of which Paris is not-so-coincidentally known for having.

Hakone, Japan

Zhang Yun / Getty Images

While not as romanticized for cherry-blossomed strolls as its neighbor, Kyoto, Hakone is a worthy day trip from Tokyo, offering an intimate escape from city travel in the most relaxing way possible: hot springs resorts . Aside from relaxing in onsen (hot springs) at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn), you can take advantage of the natural sites, like Lake Ashi and the volcano Mount Fuji , or tour the fire-engine red Hakone Shrine and open-air sculpture museum . The many transportation options , ranging from boats and cable cars to rolling train routes through the mountains, also seem like mini adventures, making yours all the more memorable.

Northern Norway

AFP / Getty Images

If you've ever considered stargazing a romantic experience, northern Norway really ups the ante with its naturally occuring cosmic activity. The region covers about one-third of the country and is considered one of the best places to see the northern lights in Norway . They usually make an appearance from autumn to mid-April, while from late April to mid-August, the sun is still visible late at night thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the " midnight sun ."

Feeling adventurous? Venture even farther north to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard's January and February months have "polar nights," when night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this kind of trip together, be warned: Looking up at the stars in your own backyard might not be quite as impressive anymore.

Porto, Portugal

Paula Galindo Valle / Travel + Leisure

Porto is a waterfront merchant city that seemingly transports visitors to an earlier time with its cobblestoned streets, baroque churches, and prevalence of port factories and family-owned businesses. Nearby in the Duoro Valley , you can visit vineyards where wine has been produced for more than 2,000 years, sample it, and participate in harvesting practices such as stomping on the grapes. It's the perfect part of Portugal to spend a day or two , if not longer. In a city infused with the culture of wine making and drinking, you and your significant other can get tipsy on the energy alone.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Known for its natural and architectural beauty, Italy's Amalfi Coast is a prime choice for a romantic Mediterranean getaway. Travelers can bask in the natural scenery, hike through dreamy seaside villages with picturesque views, and visit famous sites such as the Grotta dello Smeraldo (the " Emerald Grotto "), as well as medieval churches, gardens, and museums. When you need some quiet time for just the two of you, there are a number of secluded hotels offering oceanfront views and luxurious amenities.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Filippo Bacci / Getty Images

In Argentina's bustling capital, you and your significant other will never run out of activities to try, with lots of live entertainment and a multitude of restaurants and bars. For a day-to-night date, La Boca is a vibrant neighborhood known for Tango dancing and El Caminito, a pedestrian walkway lined with houses and shops painted in bright primary colors — strolling through this vibrant neighborhood is one of our favorite things to do in Buenos Aires .

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, these 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, will have you sailing into uncharted relationship territory with unbelievable sites to discover together. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most popular white-sand beaches in the country — despite it being a tourist hotspot, you've got 4.3 miles to play with, making it easy to stretch out and find your own space.

In addition to enjoying blissful beach days, you can embark on some truly unforgettable and romantic excursions while visiting the islands, such as flying over Heart Reef in a helicopter, staying aboard a boat for a few days, or snorkeling at the legendary Great Barrier Reef.

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

Design Pics / Helene Cyr / Getty Images

While Turks and Caicos is certainly not a new destination for romantic vacations, most visitors flock to Providenciales, the first major stopping point on the tropical archipelago.

Far less popular (and far more secluded) are the pristine beaches of South Caicos , just a short, scenic connecting flight away. If you're looking for something truly special — perhaps to celebrate an anniversary or another special occasion — Sailrock Resort is a luxury property nestled within natural brush along white-sand shores that lead into crystal-clear water. You'll experience the type of picturesque serenity you thought was only accessible to movie stars, yet there the two of you will be, sipping colorful cocktails together on a hammock at the beach's edge, with nothing but the open, beautiful horizon spanning ahead of you.

No matter how active you decide to be, Barbados is one of the best vacation spots for couples. The island's west coast is home to several high-end resorts with various offerings to make your Caribbean escape extra memorable. Arrange some classic island excursions, such as snorkeling, private boat trips with companies such as Seaduced , or visits to local attractions like the spectacular Hunte's Gardens and Rihanna's childhood home.

For a dose of local cuisine and culture, spend an upbeat Friday night at Oistins fish fry or sample some of the island's best rums on a tour of the Mount Gay rum distillery . You could also kick back and make relaxation your number-one priority by simply enjoying the beautiful beaches and temperate water. For a dinner you won't soon forget, head to The Cliff , which overlooks the water in a sultry, fire-adorned setting.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

For the ultimate romantic vacation, charter a boat and sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. If you start your journey in Dubrovnik and end up in Split, you'll get a comprehensive look at the country, from nautical exploration to sightseeing in both small seaport towns and big cities. With a stopover in a new place every night, the transit is part of the fun, rather than merely a means to get from point A to point B.

Travelers mainly book Turkish gulets (or small yachts) with separate quarters for the crew. Companies like Gulet Yacht Adriatic Holiday offer packages that include the services of a captain, chef, and one or two crew members to help curate not just your route, but everything else you do while you're on the water or shore. While the busy season is typically from June through early September, trips also set out in October and make a great option if you want a bit more quiet and privacy on the Adriatic Sea.

Cotswolds, England

Gavin Guan / Getty Images

Step into a romantic period piece on a vacation in the Cotswolds , located in the picturesque English countryside. The rolling hills and fields are dotted with the most quaint towns you'll ever find — popular stops include Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Castle Combe. Grab a pint in a storied pub or tea in a cute cafe after spending the day exploring town after adorable town.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jay Yuan / Getty Images

What could be more romantic than snuggling up by the fire after a day out in the snow? In Jackson Hole , you can enjoy winter sports in a stunning setting just a short distance from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . Plus, you can book a stay at a luxurious property like Amangani or the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole for a truly romantic trip — or the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort if you're both skiing or snowboarding enthusiasts.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is often a favorite city among Travel + Leisure readers , and once you visit, it's easy to see why. Dine at delicious restaurants, take a sunset cruise in the harbor (where you may even spot a dolphin or two), and visit one of the nearby beaches. For romantic accommodations, we recommend staying outside the city on Kiawah Island, a little under an hour's drive away, where you'll find The Sanctuary , a beachfront luxury hotel.

Tucson, Scottsdale, and Sedona, Arizona

Looking for a mindful way to connect with your partner? Consider booking a trip to a wellness resort with a spa and classes to deepen your relationship. Miraval Arizona , located in Tucson, has an all-inclusive experience that throws in fitness classes, health and wellness lectures, and spa treatments, among other amenities. The Civana Wellness Resort & Spa near Scottsdale offers a serene escape amid the Sonoran Desert, while Sedona, with its red rocks and mysterious vortexes, is another popular destination among wellness travelers.

Kauai, Hawaii

Mark Wilson / Getty Images

Find paradise together on a trip to Kauai , Hawaii's Garden Isle. You'll find the best of both worlds, with a beautiful mix of lush jungle landscapes and beautiful beaches. Spend your days alternating between lounging or strolling hand-and-hand along the shores and exploring its natural wonders by foot, boat, or helicopter. Popular romantic resort options include Timbers Kauai in Lihue and Koʻa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach.

Napa Valley, California

Akshat Mehta / EyeEm / Getty Images

A romantic jaunt to California's wine country might be the perfect getaway for couples looking for delicious vino, beautiful views, and world-class dining. Spend a few days touring vineyards together and tasting different varietals while gazing out at the rolling, vine-covered hills. You can also opt for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train for more scenic views. Retire to one of the many beautiful luxury resorts in the area, such as the Auberge du Soleil , Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , or Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection .

Sea Island, Georgia

This Georgia barrier island resort offers secluded, five-star luxury across several styles of accommodations, including The Cloister, located in the heart of the resort, as well as private cottages. In addition to the beach, guests can golf, lounge by the pools, enjoy spa treatments, and participate in other activities like tennis and horseback riding.

New York City

For some couples, taking on a major metropolis is just as romantic as spending a week by the beach. And when it comes to big city destinations in the United States, it's hard to beat New York City . Every night is date night on vacation, so go to dinner and take in a Broadway show, enjoy extended evening hours at some of the world's best museums, visit acclaimed restaurants and cocktail bars, and stroll through Central Park to soak in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

Palm Springs, California

Escape to the desert with a trip to Palm Springs, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lined with palm trees. Plan your visit in the spring, fall, or winter to avoid the intense summer heat, and admire mid-century modern architecture as you hit the links or head to the spa. The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is a luxe pick for a pool with a view, while the Parker Palm Springs is another trendy choice.

Antalya, Turkey

Emerald waters, white sands and luxury resorts dot the Turkish hotspot

Best for: All-inclusive resorts

Antalya,  Turkey’s glamorous tourism capital, sits on the southwestern Mediterranean coast, a gateway to the  Turkish Riviera . Bordered by the natural beauty of the forest-clad Taurus Mountains, authentic hammams, al fresco restaurants and luxe all-inclusive resorts flank the miles of golden sand beaches, a romantic backdrop for a loved-up break. Scenic views over Tahtali Mountain from the Tunektepe Cable Cars – with panoramic summit restaurant – are ideal for a date night, or head into Kaleici, the romantic stone-walled old quarter, for echoes of Antalya’s Roman port past and Hadrian’s Gate landmark.

Affordable Antalya cuts costs with an extensive public transport system, hearty cheap eats from fragrant street food stands and the best attractions come for free: sprawling beaches and azure waters that beg for you to dip your toe in – it’s no surprise  UK tourists  are flocking here.

Where to stay

Adults-only  Diamond Elite Hotel & Spa  wellness hotel sits near the historic town of Side, just 250m from Halk Beach. Lisbon, Portugal

Romantic restaurants and pastel de nata cafes line Lisbon’s pastel streets

Best for: Charming culture

Portugal’s capital, Lisbon , is sure to satisfy the couple lusting for a historic (and hilly) city break with viewpoints made for picnics, pastel de nata  tart in hand. Think peaceful sunset cruises along the lively Tagus River waterfront, the gentle dance of  fado  (Portuguese folk music), the whimsical charm of Jardín Botánico de Ajuda and a tangle of poetic pastel streets with  azulejos  decorative tiles in Alfama, the old Moorish quarter.

The charismatic city is one of Western Europe’s cheapest capitals, exuding romance in neighbours filled with street art, budget-friendly Baroque landmarks and hundreds of restaurants that form a candlelit scene of world-class wine and fresh seafood – you’re even able to bag an espresso for 50p.

Hotel Borges Chiado  is located near Bairro Alto’s buzzing fado clubs, is walking distance from a wealth of Lisbon’s delights, and embodies Portuguese charm. One of Lisbon’s oldest hotels, Borges Chiado’s fusion of traditional and modern styles reflects in elegantly styled rooms, some with private balconies overlooking Chiado Square, and the grandeur of the lobby.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, ksamil, albania.

Just a boat ride from Corfu, Ksamil sits on the sparkling Ionian Sea

Best for: Beach holidays

The crowning jewel of the southern  Albanian Riviera , Ksamil in the warm Mediterranean sun is the image of a  Caribbean resort without the steep price tag of big-name beach destinations, including its  Greek  neighbours. Growing in popularity with international tourists, the bargain summer spot is fringed with authentic accommodation behind a waterfront of beach tavernas on the sparkling Ionian Sea.

Three idyllic wild isles float 150m from shore, a swimmable distance great for snorkellers and kayakers to explore, and it’s a short drive to the Unesco-listed Greek and Roman ruins of Butrint National Park. Refreshing cold dips in the famous Blue Eye freshwater spring in Muzine, and boat trip mussle tours with fresh tastings are a highlight of holidays to the  Albanian  lovebird’s paradise near  Corfu .

The  Hotel Two Mermaid Ksamil  is an enchanting Albanian stay with terraced sea view rooms in shades of sapphire blue and white. There’s a traditional on-site restaurant serving homemade continental breakfasts and a bar complete with a happy hour just a short stroll away from the ample swimming and snorkelling opportunities on golden Lori Beach.

Booking.com  offers seven nights in a Hotel Two Mermaid garden view double from £149pp including breakfast. Return  Easyjet  flights from £67.28pp depart Luton for Corfu 15 April 2024. A one-hour  ferry  from Corfu to Saranda, a short drive from Ksamil, costs €15 – €25 each way.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow, the cultural heart of Poland, is a maze of vibrant market squares

Best for: Cheap eats

Steeped in history,  Krakow , the former royal capital, is a Unesco landmark hotspot, from Wawel Royal Castle to the Wieliczka Salt Mines. The student city in southern Poland is super affordable, too. Cost-savvy couples will find the romantic Planty Park that wraps around the old town ideal for a summer stroll, but a Krakow city break sparkles in winter under the twinkling Christmas market lights.

Whatever the season, nights spent listening to operatic classics, in vibrant jazz clubs or taking carriage rides around Rynek Glówny, Krakow’s medieval market square, are memorable. Eating  zapiekanki  and drinking vodka at the abundance of local merchants and riding the easy PKP train service keeps costs down, and Polish pints come cheap. Visit Kładka Ojca Bernatka Bridge to cement your love with a scribble on a padlock.

Metropolo By Golden Tulip  is only 20 minutes from Krakow’s city centre via tram, and features comfortable and convenient Art Deco-esque rooms with a blend of Chinese and modern European styles, and this fusion extends to its Yulan restaurant. If you indulge a little too much in the traditional Chinese cuisine, you can always to work it off by getting your sweat on in the hotel’s sauna and gym.

Thomas Cook  provides a three-night city break to Metropolo By Golden Tulip from £150.55pp. Return flights depart Luton 29 November 2023.

Costa Adeje, Tenerife

Find plush boutiques and seafront eats on the shimmering Adeje coast

Best for: Sophisticated sands

The Canary Islands floats off Morocco’s coast, with Costa Adeje, a tourist-orientated upscale resort, inhabiting southwestern Tenerife. Costa Adeje basks in consistent temperatures and sunshine hours, with year-round warm seas and Blue Flag beaches, including the volcanic sands of Playa Fañabe scattered with loungers and watersports galore – it’s not hard to see why the rows of inexpensive luxury hotels are so attractive to visitors.

Designer labels, the impressive greens of championship course Golf Costa Adeje and days spent at Siam Park, Europe’s largest water park, allow couples to float tropical lazy rivers hand in hand. The lively promenade with al fresco restaurants and glitzy yacht-filled marina, Puerto Colon, is the ideal departure point for dolphin- and whale-watching boat trips in the Atlantic, and there’s an emphasis on tapas sharing plates at pocket-friendly tables for two.

Hilltop aparthotel  Panoramica Heights  in Torviscas is blessed with sprawling views of the Atlantic and the Costa Adeje waterfront without all the noise. Guests will stay in stylish self-catering apartments fitted with well-equipped kitchenettes and a balcony for a cosy date night in – there’s even a rooftop pool, sun terrace and snack bar with views that live up to the hotel’s namesake.

Tui  offers a four-night self-catering stay at Panoramic Heights from £311.22pp. Return flights depart Gatwick 27 November 2023.

Lille, France

It’s fine art, patisseries and quaint B&Bs for lovers in Lille

Best for: Cosy city breaks

The cultural “capital of Flanders” in the northern  Hauts-de-France  region has a cheerful character that’s just right for a weekend city break that comes at a comfortable cost, much cheaper in comparison to  Parisian  prices. Visitors can score a bargain at buzzing flea markets and save cash by leisurely walking the romantic Parc de la Citadelle canals on foot – the steps are easily rewarded with a spa day at one of several sanctuaries that dot the city.

The underrated city blends a feast of  French  and Flemish influences in its architecture and at the hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving  carbonade flamande,  a beer-stewed beef, in the Grand Place square. Beyond the cultural thrills, the enchantingly traditional Vieux-Lille old town, a maze of stone houses and 17th-century brick, wows with its cobbled streets laden with converted weavers’ cottages, coffee and waffle stops. All thise, and just under two hours from London on the Eurostar.

Walking distance from Lille Europe train station,  Hotel Carlton  offers a spell-binding stay in the heart of Lille with views of the Opera and the Old Stock Exchange. Room interiors enjoy elegant decor with an emphasis on comfort evident in the plush bathrobes, complimentary care products and “Carlton Lille” chocolates. Buffet breakfasts serve up fresh fruit and local produce overlooking Place du Théâtre and the bespoke cocktail bar is an intimate spot for a personalised tasting.

Booking.com  provides three nights of bed and breakfast accommodation at Hotel Carlton from £240.50pp. Take the  Eurostar  direct from London St Pancras to Lille Europe, a 10-minute walk from the city centre; returns from £98pp on 19 May 2024.
