Lviv is one of our favourite cities to travel as a couple. It is a perfect weekender from most cities in Europe being only a short flight from the UK.

There are heaps of adventurous and exciting things to explore in Lviv. It is a bit of a quirky city with lots of interesting bars and restaurants to enjoy .

If you are into trying new foods, don’t forget to try Borshch, a traditional dish from the Ukraine which will only cost you a few bucks to try.

Borshch is a stir-fry of beetroot and tomatoes added to a hearty vegetable soup. You won’t have to look far to try it, this dish is located in almost every restaurant in Lviv.

Aside from delicious food, Lviv has so much more to offer. The cobbled stoned streets of Lviv are filled with interesting places and sites to explore (many of which are free) including Lviv Art Palace, the Pharmacy Museum, the Market Square and High Castle.

There are also many amazing churches in the city including St. George’s Cathedral and Dominican Church.

Now, you can walk around cobbled streets, the historic cityscape as it would have looked had the city not have been destroyed.

We were completely mesmerised by the  efforts of the many historians, architects, workers, and volunteers who took part in the redevelopment of the city.

• Museum of the History of Polish Jews
• Copernicus Science Centre. 

If you visit Warsaw in Summer you can enjoy a free Chopin concert on a Sunday in the amazing Lazienki Park.

Surprisingly, this city is also famous for its nightlife. If you are a couple that likes hitting the clubs, excite yourself by visiting the vibrant Vistula boulevards and upscale clubs.

There are also amazing, famous restaurants in Warsaw to enjoy like Restauracja Różana, Restauracja Różana, and Specjały Regionalne at a fraction of UK restaurant prices.

One of the great things about Prague is it is a very walkable city. Last time we were in Prague, we spent an afternoon exploring all the hidden gems by foot. For this reason, it is an incredible affordable destination.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can also take the tram to the top of the hill in Mala Strana , our absolute favourite district in Prague.

At the top of the Prague castle, you can enjoy an absolutely amazing view of the old town of Prague. The Prague castle is the perfect spot for a romantic walk in Prague at dusk.

Prague is also one of the most affordable places to dine in Europe. In Prague, a meal of our favourite Prague duck (amazingly good if you are a meat eater) and a beer for 2 will set you back no more than 30 USD which is insane value for the quality and quantity of food you receive.

Take a stroll across the Charles Bridge to the John Lennon Wall behind a small church’s courtyard where you will see tributes to John Lennon as well as local artists singing “All you Need is Love”

The entrance fee is only a few dollars. It’s a great alternative to the expensive Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon in Page. Zebra Canyon and Red Canyon (also known as Peek-a-Boo Canyon) are free slot canyons in the Kanab area. For the second one, you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. But there’s a tip if you only have 2WD. You park your car and walk part of the way (2.5 miles) to the slot canyon.

If you’re in the Kanab area, you can also enter the Geofencing Lottery and try to win a permit to one of the most popular trails in the Southwest to the famous Wave formation.

Fort Lauderdale is located about 45 minutes away by car from Miami, and while a taxi or Uber will cost anywhere between $45-100 depending on demand, there is a cheaper option to travel between the two cities. The Brightline train connects several South Florida cities and the route between Fort Lauderdale and Miami starts at just $15 one way. 

Summertime is the most affordable time to travel to Miami, so hotel prices are at their lowest this time of year, especially if you can visit mid-week. Staying in the downtown area, Brickell, or Little Havana will offer the best rates for hotels. (The food and nightlife options and prices are much lower here than in Miami Beach as well)

Wynwood is an eclectic and artistic neighborhood near downtown Miami that is most famous for its street art display known as the Wynwood Walls . While the official art installation does charge an entrance fee of $10, exploring the neighborhood as a whole, which features a ton of amazing street art on every building, is free. 

If you’d like to transport yourself to Europe for a day, be sure to visit the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens . Of course one of the best free things to do while visiting Zion is to go hiking . Make sure to check out the Narrows as well as Angel’s Landing while visiting. They are both rather intense hikes though, so if you’re looking for something a little more chill hike the Canyon Overlook Trail which will lead you to an incredible view out over the park.

Castlebay is the largest village and it has a picturesque castle in the middle of the bay. This is also where the ferry arrives and departs. 

The cheapest way to get to Barra is to fly to Glasgow and get the ferry from Oban .

On the island B&Bs such as Tigh na Mara in Castlebay and Sealladh na Mara close to the airport cost £90 to £115 per night. The most affordable and popular places to stay on the island are self-catering cottages which work out much cheaper than staying in a B&B or hotel. Emilia Romagna, Italy

Every corner of Italy has something to offer from a culinary perspective. But only the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna can lay claim to 44 DOP food products including Parmigiano Reggiano, tortellini, and ragù bolognese. Begin your eatathon in the region’s capital, Bologna. With only one Michelin-starred restaurant in the entire city (yes, really), couples will have to do their own research, strolling the city’s grand porticos in search of the best osteria and trattorias. As a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures, Singapore is one of the world’s great food cities—and a real feast for travelers hungry for food  and  culture. And sure, there are temples of fine dining galore (we’re looking at you,  Odette ), but some of the city’s best bites come from unassuming local vendors at the city’s legendary hawker centers. At the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, sample everything from fragrant laksa soup and Chinese steamed buns to piping-hot clay pot rice. For date night, make reservations at the renowned  Atlas Bar , a vaulted space with Art Deco flair and the world’s largest gin collection. Even the city’s Jewel Changi Airport is a culinary wonderland with 100+ eateries, allowing couples to make the most of their every meal in the food-obsessed city. 

South Africa’s Wine Country  

From stunning Cape Dutch-style architecture and world-class restaurants to luxurious wine country hotels, South Africa’s wine country is truly suited to all tastes. It’s no secret that the French capital is a cultural powerhouse. But it’s not always easy to escape the crowds and enjoy the cultural treasures for yourself—or is it? According to the uber-stylish Parisian hoteliers Anouk and Louis Solanet of  Orso hotel group, there are plenty of lesser-known gems even in popular neighborhoods like Montmartre (you just need to know where to look). One of the couple’s favorite spots is the Musée de la vie Romantique , a literary museum situated at the base of Montmartre and set within the former house of Dutch painter Ary Scheffer. “We love to sit in silence in the hidden garden, which smells of roses and lilacs,” says Anouk. Afterwards, they recommend grabbing a drink at  Hotel Rochechouart ’s rooftop, which offers dead-on views of the Sacré Coeur. On the Left Bank, the couple loves strolling through the Jardin du Luxembourg and on to Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, one of the streets that inspired Woody Allen’s  Midnight in Paris,  and finally to the Giacometti Foundation—“A jewel of Parisian museum,” says Louis—which is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. 

Lausanne, Switzerland

Switzerland’s fourth-largest city is straight out of a fairytale, with a medieval Old Town and vertiginous streets that rise above the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva. It’s also one of the country’s most underrated arts hubs, thanks to the recent opening of  Platforme 10 , a striking new art district home to three of the city’s major art museums. For couples who prefer to see art en plein air, go on a cultural scavenger hunt to locate 82 works scattered throughout the hillside city (don’t miss Clelia Bettua’s sculptural weather vane at the Port of Ouchy). To cap off a perfect day, catch a show at the newly modernized Théâre de Vidy before retiring at the  Hôtel Royal Savoy Lausanne , a grand castle-like property that wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson flick. The hotel has a sublime spa, a rooftop terrace overlooking the lake, and an unbeatable location near all the top cultural spots. 

Buenos Aires

Is there a city sexier than Buenos Aires? There’s something sultry about Argentina’s capital, from its dimly-lit tango bars and balmy weather to its heady mix of South American and European influences. After catching a tango performance at the city’s best-known milonga, La Catedral , continue your cultural immersion at the Teatro Colon —one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses—where Igor Stravinsky has performed, Rudolph Nureyev has danced, and Maria Callas has sung. From there, it’s a short walk to  El Ateneo Grand Splendid , a bookstore occupying a former theater and featuring century-old ceiling frescos. But to really feel the spirit of the city, couples should spend an afternoon in the colorful La Boca neighborhood, where there are vibrant murals, live music, and views of the Riachuelo River.

Venice, Italy  

“Venice is pure magic,” says Amina Dearmon of Perspectives Travel. “I love being able to wander the streets, stop at an osteria for an Aperol Spritz, and watch the sunset from the Accademia Bridge.” Like so many Italian cities, Venice is like an open-air museum, brimming with art and culture at every turn. Its narrow streets and atmospheric squares are packed with heavy-hitting institutions, too, like the  Peggy Guggenheim Collection , the  Doge’s Palace , and the  Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro . First-time visitors shouldn’t miss a side trip to Murano, the second-largest island in the Venetian lagoon, to learn about its long tradition of glassmaking at the  Venice Glass Museum . 

The former imperial capital of Japan is home to more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In any other city, the sheer volume of culture would be head-spinning. But in Kyoto, it’s a pleasure to stroll around the peaceful temple gardens, traditional teahouses, and ancient storefronts, feeling transported to an earlier time. Top landmarks include the famous orange torii gates at the Fushimi Inari shrine, the celebrated Kiyomizu Temple, and the impressive Nijo Castle. They usually make an appearance from autumn to mid-April, while from late April to mid-August, the sun is still visible late at night thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the " midnight sun ."

Feeling adventurous? Venture even farther north to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard's January and February months have "polar nights," when night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this kind of trip together, be warned: Looking up at the stars in your own backyard might not be quite as impressive anymore.

Porto, Portugal
