May 2015, we have 2 new elevators installed. We went to great length to ensure the spec was written to include 2 Cat 5 cables to the traveling car, one for IP phone and one for IP video camera. Today the elevator installers say there is no such cable in existence, that the wire gauge is too small and would be too brittle. They say the bending over time would result in failure. I have a had time believing that in 2015, that new elevators aren't equipped with IP cameras and the necessary Cat 6 wiring to run them. They also installed an analog phone, and I'm ok with that for now, but really need the IP camera. A quick google search reveals the elevator guy might be right in that the cable doesn't exist, however we have it written into the spec, so they may be breaking new ground and making one for us.

Line of sight WiFi frequency radio? Obviously not able to provide Power Over Ethernet though.

Senior Member

You might be able to use a set of the Ethernet-over-powerline or Ethernet-over-telephone repeaters to get your signal up a spare communications pair in the cable. And some of those devices could have PoE, I'm not doing that research half-way into the first cup of coffee. I have heard of permitted installations where a separate cable is attached to the main traveler for communications. If you can find CAT5 with the proper insulation, that might be an option. I'd also be having a conversation with the vendor about "It's in the spec, why are you telling us now? Did you not read the spec?" Might not change anything but you might feel better about it.

Look at the DRAKA line of cable. They have traveling data cables. Get it through Anixter. http://prysmiangroup.com/en/business_markets/markets/elevator/downloads/datasheets/DE-wire.pdf

What I Discovered Testing Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet Performance in My New Place

What's the difference between Wi-Fi and Ethernet? I didn't know, so I aimed to find out.

cat 6 travelling cable

My fiancé plugged an Ethernet cable into his PlayStation 5 and was shocked at the results.

Before joining CNET, all I cared about was my Wi-Fi. But when I joined the broadband team, I realized I'd thrown the term Wi-Fi around, but didn't really understand it. What is it, and is it better than those ugly cables known as Ethernet?

The answer is subjective, depending on your specific internet needs. But it's important information when choosing your home internet setup or the best broadband provider for your household.

So, after covering broadband for CNET for over nine months, I decided to test them both at home to see the real differences and to determine which is better, faster, cheaper and safer.

Locating local internet providers

CNET Moving Tips logo

The answers may surprise you.

Read more: Wi-Fi Need for Speed: Simple Steps to Boost Your Internet Connection

My home internet experiment

Wi-Fi is a mode of connecting your devices to the local network. Whether cooking in the kitchen or sitting on the couch, you can hop online without worrying about plugging into your modem or router . But Ethernet is the opposite. It's a wired connection that many view as inconvenient.

Using Speedtest by Ookla, CNET's pick for the best speed test , I compared my internet speed over Wi-Fi and Ethernet to see which was faster. You might be surprised at the difference. I certainly was.

Over Wi-Fi, I was receiving download speeds of around 126 megabits per second. With Ethernet, my download speed jumped to 395Mbps, which is only 5Mbps away from what I'm paying for monthly.

I never noticed much lag when streaming with Wi-Fi, but using an Ethernet cable made a noticeable difference. Movies, shows and live television loaded much faster on Hulu, HBO Max and Netflix . To maximize response time, I decided to plug my Ethernet cable into my PlayStation 5 indefinitely.

Then I wondered, why was Ethernet faster than my Wi-Fi connection?

gettyimages-1241445203

This is what it looks like when you connect a device to a router using Wi-Fi.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity, meaning it's a completely wireless network connection. After setting up a router, you can wirelessly connect your computer , mobile device and television to the internet.

Although the connection may be stronger the closer you are to the router, you should be able to access the internet wherever you are in your house. You can also purchase a Wi-Fi extender to broadcast signals to every room, resulting in fewer dead zones.

gettyimages-1441510034

Ethernet cables connected to a router.

What is Ethernet?

Before Wi-Fi existed, Ethernet was the primary way to link devices together. Ethernet offers a wired connection through cables that plug directly into your router.

Of course, a wired connection means you have to be near your equipment if you want to go online. You can wire your house with Ethernet cables, which is similar to cable wiring, but that can be a costly procedure.

Comparing Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Wi-Fi and Ethernet both have their advantages and disadvantages depending on your personal needs. Here's what you need to know.

  • Convenience
  • Affordability
  • Limited range
  • Security risks
  • Reliability
  • Faster speeds
  • Secure connections
  • Limited mobility
  • Limited number of connected devices

Which is cheaper?

It might seem like the cost of Wi-Fi and Ethernet would be similar -- since you're paying for the service, not the mode of internet connection -- but Wi-Fi is actually significantly cheaper than Ethernet. Plus, Wi-Fi can handle a lot more devices than regular Ethernet cables can. To make it worthwhile, you would have to install a switch box or Ethernet jacks around your house to connect multiple devices to the internet.

Which is faster?

One of Ethernet's biggest advantages is speed. Since your device is connected directly to the router -- compared to wirelessly through Wi-Fi -- you can expect faster bandwidth , which is how much data you can transmit through an internet connection.

Ethernet also boasts more consistent speeds since wired signals don't fluctuate as easily as wireless ones do. You also won't have to worry about latency issues, or a lag in connection, that sometimes occur with local network congestion.

Which is safer?

One of Ethernet's advantages over Wi-Fi: the connection is safer and more secure. Data transmitted through Wi-Fi can be more easily intercepted by hackers, but if they want to hack you over Ethernet, they need to physically connect to the router.

Which is better overall?

Using an Ethernet connection all the time is just not practical. Using Wi-Fi, you can access the internet from anywhere in your house without plugging into a router. Ethernet limits your mobility, which is unrealistic if you have several people connecting multiple devices.

However, testing my internet speeds with an Ethernet cable helped me pinpoint the root cause of my slow connection. Based on the drastic difference between the Wi-Fi and Ethernet speed tests, I determined that my Wi-Fi connection was to blame for the slow service, not my ISP throttling my speed.

I haven't taken any steps yet to boost my Wi-Fi signals, but I might move my router to a more central area of my apartment or get an extender to help my speeds stay consistent. My colleague Ry Crist dives into more ways to speed up your Wi-Fi , and you can bet I'll be leaning into his advice.

What's the bottom line?

Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet have their benefits when it comes to home broadband. Wi-Fi offers mobility and convenience, meaning you can access the internet anywhere in your home, while Ethernet provides faster and more secure connectivity.

Most of us will be better off with Wi-Fi because our homes and apartments are filled with smart devices. But Ethernet is a great tool to increase responsiveness, especially for gamers who want less lag with online gaming.

Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet FAQs

Can i use both wi-fi and ethernet.

Many households use Ethernet cables for certain devices, like gaming consoles or televisions, that are planted in one spot and need fast connectivity. Wi-Fi is the better option for mobile devices -- that way, you can take your phone or tablet anywhere without having to plug it in.

What are the different types of Ethernet cables?

Ethernet cables can be coaxial, a twisted pair or fiber optic. Seven different Ethernet cables are available on the market: CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7, CAT7A and CAT8. Each differs in purpose, cost and the distance they cover, so do your research before purchasing one for your home.

How do I set up an Ethernet connection?

Setting up an Ethernet connection is a pretty straightforward process. Most cables require you to plug one end into the router and the other into your device. You can access the internet once you change your adapter settings to the Ethernet connection.

How-To Geek

Trust me, you want a travel cable organizer, especially when it's on sale.

Never forget your chargers again.

Why worry about forgetting your chargers next time you take a trip, when you can just have them all ready to go?

Anyone who has known me for more than a few days knows that I'm a forgetful person. My brain very much works on the concept of "out of sight, out of mind", and that goes into overdrive when trying to prepare for a trip. I could have sworn that I packed enough USB-C cables , or that phone charger , or the tiny Ethernet cable for directly connecting to hotel Wi-Fi , but more often than not, I'll forget something and either need to shell out for something overpriced at the airport or go without.

That's why a compact travel cable organizer is an essential travel accessory . Not only does it keep everything in one place so you can double-check what you have packed already, but if you buy extra cables, you can have everything pre-packed and never need to worry about it at all! Who really wants to worry about their cable and accessory situation when getting ready for a vacation, anyway?

Maybe you haven't picked a cable organizer yet because, like me, it slipped your mind, or you didn't know about them until now. Or maybe you were waiting for a sale. Regardless, there's no reason to wait any longer—BAGSMART has its very compact, very helpful Electronic Organizer Travel Case on sale right now for only $12.99. This is 41% off the already affordable price of $21.99, and even if you don't think you'll use it, this is a great price to pick up this organizer, just in case.

With this organizer, you'll have a variety of pockets and bands to store a huge variety of electronics and cables, and three slots to even store SD cards.

You really can't go wrong with this accessory, so why wait? Pick it up before you forget!

BAGSMART Electronic Organizer Bag

It's a nightmare keeping track of wires in the best of times, it's even worse when the phone is dying and the charger cable is nowhere to be found! This organizer bag is an inexpensive solution that will keep all the important wires in one place.

X-Men '97: What Are Cable's Mutant Powers?

The X-Men have one of the most eclectic mixes of superpowers in comic book history. Mutation gives some lucky participants godlike control over the elements while turning others into devil-like monsters. Creativity animates most of the cast, but there are a few old standbys that remain integral. Psychic mutants often maintain central roles in the franchise, with characters like Charles Xavier and Jean Grey holding immense control. Cable doesn't look like most X-Men psychics, but his mutant powers will seem familiar.

Most fans probably met Cable in the 90s cartoon that inspired X-Men '97 or in Deadpool 2 . The earlier cartoon has abnormal inconsistencies in how they portray the character. His presence as a time traveler only emerged in the second season. Josh Brolin's take on Cable was accurate to his personality, but it changed or left out large aspects of his abilities to let him fit better into the action. Neither picture is 100% correct, but Cable is a complicated character.

X-Men '97 Actor Believes His Character Could Have Resolved Avengers: Infinity War

One X-Men '97 actor speculates his character's potential to prevent Thanos's devastation in Avengers: Infinity War.

What is Cable capable of?

Nathan Summers is the son of Scott "Cyclops" Summers and Madelyne Pryor, the first clone of Jean Grey. Evil geneticist Mr. Sinister carefully engineered their romantic union to take advantage of the superior mutant that they would birth. Sinister cloned Jean, creating Madelyne Pryor without informing her of her origin story. This led to Nathan's birth, fulfilling the prophecy that Sinister imagined. Nathan Summers inherited his mother's powers, giving him access to Jean Grey's psychic gifts. He's a gifted telepath and one of the world's mightiest telekinetics. He develops his psychic powers shortly after his birth, forming psychic bonds long before he learns to walk or talk. Nathan could create a telekinetic bubble around himself in his infancy. He would grow into an astonishingly skilled psychic , possibly surpassing any other existing mutant.

Cable's powers appear radically different in various depictions. Characters routinely speak of him with soaring language. Rachel Summers, Cable's powerfully telepathic sister, considers him the most capable psychic who has ever lived. She seems to believe that he could extinguish a star with a thought and listen into internal monologues from across the globe. Cable can reach out to others across dimensional boundaries, create realistic illusions, control the minds of others, and traverse the astral plane at will. He's even more gifted at telekinesis. Cable can seemingly lift hundreds of tons with his mind. He can also accurately manipulate objects with surgical specificity. He can create impenetrable force fields and project concussive blasts. Cable can fly, alter his size, teleport, travel through time, alter matter, and disintegrate almost anything with his natural mutant superpowers . Cable would be one of the mightiest mutants who ever lived under normal circumstances. However, his powers are typically depleted by unusual circumstances.

Why doesn't Cable use his powers?

Shortly after his birth, Apocalypse infected Nathan Summers with his Techno-Organic Virus. This would have overwritten Nathan's personality and turned him into a ravenous cyborg monster. Scott and Nathan's stepmother, Jean Grey, had to send Nathan into the distant future where a time traveler promised them a cure. The virus manifested itself as cybernetic enhancements, taking over Nathan's left side. The Techno-Organic Virus keeps Nathan's powers at bay for the majority of his life. The liquid metal in his veins doesn't suppress his telekinetic powers. Instead, Nathan learned to use his psychic powers to keep the virus from fully consuming him. This occupies his mind, preventing him from using his mutant powers in most other situations. This arrangement has fallen in and out of favor in the comics. Other characters have cured his infection at times, letting him demonstrate his might as a psychic. Most of the time, however, Cable uses advanced technology to make up for his missing powers . He has devices that allow him to read minds, create force fields, and project concussive blasts. Over his many years at war, he also became a gifted soldier, tactician, and leader. Even without access to his powers, Cable is a force to be reckoned with.

Cable takes after his mother by inheriting her telepathic and telekinetic powers. While many fans rarely see him use those gifts explicitly, he's actually always engaging those gifts to ensure his continued survival. A lot of Marvel properties see Cable gain the full use of his powers, or split his abilities with technology, or lose his powers entirely to focus on physical combat skills. Cable's psychic powers could make him the strongest of his kind, but he needs that strength to keep him alive. Marvel didn't want another Charles Xavier, so they gave him a metal arm and let him focus on big guns.

Hiking around Engelberg, Switzerland's 'valley of cable-cars'

In Switzerland’s Engelberg Valley, farmers’ cableways give access to Alpine trails and farmsteads that would otherwise remain out of reach.

Two hikers atop a mountain in Switzerland. Both are wearing backpacks, and greenery sprouts from the mountain.

As the dusky ‘alpenglow’ blushes the peaks above, Ronnie the cat curls tighter into my lap and we share a contented sigh. Beyond the trickling sound of the trough in the gardens of Berghof Brändlen, the mountain farmstead I’m spending the night at, I can hear the soothing tinkle of cowbells. Suddenly, between timber barns housing hay and scythes, two rows of lights twinkle to life on the ground. They flank a path that slopes down the mountainside to a cable-car, the sole means of transport to the village of Wolfenschiessen, some 2,952ft below. Brändlen is one of 26 mountain farms without road access around Engelberg. The valley is set in Switzerland’s German-speaking heart, between the cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden, where much of the landscape is covered by forest, mountains or glaciers. This inaccessibility qualifies places like Brändlen to operate farmers’ cableways, known as Buiräbähnli, which transport people, supplies, equipment and the occasional cow up and down sheer slopes.

A far shot view of a Walenpfad, one of switzerlands most scenic high-altitude routes. A lake can be seen in the foreground, whilst in the far background a mountain can be seen out-of-focus.

The density of Buiräbähnli in Engelberg is unparalleled, lending it the moniker of ‘valley of the cable-cars’. And despite their number having more than halved in 15 years — as roads replace them and new generations choose not to invest in maintaining them — these lifts remain a lifeline for many. The farmsteads at their top, in the folds of pastures or atop lofty ridges, are rarely glimpsed by Swiss residents, let alone non-natives. But a 29-mile circular route, the Buiräbähnli Safari, enables walkers to hike to nine such lodges. It’s part of this trail I’m exploring as I set off from the historic town of Engelberg to Brändlen. For the first seven or so miles, the path follows the Walenpfad, one of Switzerland’s most scenic high-altitude routes. It meanders through wildflower pastures, zigzags up grassy peaks and hugs precipitous cliffs, the narrow stone path washed away at times by small waterfalls. Dotting the route are eight gondolas, some dating to the early 1960s and designated as cultural assets. “Caring for the lifts is part of life,” says Ueli Schmitter, a third-generation farmer with a shrug. He works with local Buiräbähnli owners to ensure the lifts pass annual inspections and a complete safety assessment each five years. “I whisper sweet nothings to mine each night.”

I meet him and his wife Isabelle at Chrüzhütte, where they serve brotkas   (home-baked bread and cheese) and Älplermagronen   (macaroni cheese). As I plunge a sprig of mountain mint into an elderflower cordial, chickens peck at my feet and Isabelle hums, kneading dough for the next loaf to be baked in her centuries-old oven.

Walks of life

Leaving the Schmitters and the well-trodden Walenpfad behind, I find myself entirely alone on the narrow path to my first Buiräbähnli. While each cableway functions on an on-demand basis, some are self-operated while others involve dialling up the farmer. The two-stage, vintage Sinsgäubahn falls into the latter category.

I find a steel box nailed onto the timber wall of the top station. Inside is a Bakelite-style telephone, which I use to call the owner, farmer Josef Durrer. After a brief conversation down the crackling line, he sends up a lift. It’s reminiscent of an American truck, with an enclosed gondola daubed in sun-bleached green paint and an open flatbed fashioned from timber slats.

A close view of a cable car docked in a village in Switzerland. In the distance, mountains can be seen with the suggestion of snow.

I clamber in and float slowly down the valley. The cable-car inches into the mid station, a small timber hut near a geranium-bestrewn farmhouse, and I see Josef. “How was the ride?” he asks with a smile on his sun-worn face. Josef’s raised cows on these pastures his entire life; these days, he rarely even rides the lower section of his gondola. “No one can remember the last time I went to the valley. It’s too much for me down there. I just ask the hiking guides to bring me what I need when they pass through.” Currently, he tells me, he spends his days on wildheuen , the time-honoured Alpine tradition of harvesting late-summer, wildflower-rich grass to dry into nutritious hay for livestock.

When the telephone jangles with another request, I hop into the second stage to continue my descent to the hamlet of Oberrickenbach. Even its quiet roads make for a jarring contrast after the tranquillity of the hiking trail, and I’m happy to soon board my next gondola, complete with hand-embroidered cushions and a sticker reading: ‘Don’t honk, driver dreaming of Swiss cows’.

My hike resumes with knee-breaking hairpin bends, following hard-to-spot trail markers. I lose the path a couple of times, and once I’m set straight by a young female farmer using a leaf blower — a modern approach to wildheuen . I spend two hours climbing through dense forest, the air pungent with mushrooms. By the time I reach Brändlen, eight hours after setting off, it’s dusk and I’ve covered — with the help of the cable-cars — 6,680ft of ascent and 6,050ft of descent.

“You must be Gabriella,” calls Rita Schmitter, guardian of Brändlen and daughter of Ueli and Isabelle, while painting the shutters in an outbuilding. “Grab a seat in the garden, I’m nearly done.” Soon, she brings me a beer and home-cooked rösti, served with a homegrown salad topped with mountain clover. She mentions I’m her second English-speaking guest of the year, and I tell her about my day. She raises her eyebrows at my anti-clockwise direction of travel; the trail’s official direction goes the opposite way. “I prefer hiking that way, towards Engelberg,” she says. “It means I can always see Titlis.” I had, indeed, found myself pausing regularly to look back upon the snow-topped, 3,239m mountain, which towers above the town. It seems the beauty of the valley isn’t lost on those accustomed to seeing it every day.
