Day 3 - Juolly and Red Skin Islands (Water sports day baby!)

Today we explore some spectacular islands towards the south of Port Blair. These islands are part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Reserve and hence the underwater life here is very well conserved and is sure to make your jaw drop.

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Wandoor Beach Starting point of entry to the Juolly and Red Skin Islands.

🕕 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm - Juolly Beach Island First, have some yummy lunch from the shacks. Take a leisure walk to the forests and sunbathe on the sands. Underwater view here is terrific. GO crazy snorkeling, scuba diving all you want!

🕕 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm - Red skin Island Juolly’s twin! Drown in its sheer beauty. Yet another brilliant island with a terrific underwater view. Snorkel, scuba dive - do it all!

Day 4 - Day Trip to Baratang Island

🕕 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Drive back to Port Blair and enjoy dinner/nightlife at Pink Fly lounge.

Day 5 - Havelock Islands (Elephant Beach, Kalapathar Beach & Nightlife)

🕕 6:00 am - 9:00 am - Check-in to your hotel Take a ferry from Phoenix Bay jetty. There are 3 slots to pick from - 6:00 am, 11:30 am and 2:00 pm. The ride would take about 3 hours. Freshen up, have breakfast and head out!

🕕 3:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Vijayanagar Beach Shallow waters and one can practically walk into the sea. Water is so clear that you can see the surface below. This place offers spectacular photo ops - a boat hooked to a bench, a tire hung to a tree! This beach has some of the best restaurants of Havelock Islands located close by - Fat Martin, Venom Bar are some good options to explore.

Day 7 - Neil Islands

Make sure to book your ferry ticket from Havelock to Neil islands at least 2 days in advance. Private ferry tickets can be booked online (make sure you book these prior to booking your hotel). Govt. ferry tickets are cheaper and have to be booked at least 2 days in advance from the ticket station. Ferry rides are limited and the demand is huge! High chances that you may not find a ticket if you try to book on the same day that you plan to travel.

🕕 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Check-in to your hotel

🕕 11:30 am - 1:30 pm - Laxmanpur Beach No. 1 and 2 Its natural bridge formation called the ‘Howrah Bridge’ is a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy the plethora of water sport options available here. Have lunch at either Ripon Seafood or Dugong Restaurant.

Step 1 - identify when are you planning a visit to andaman islands.

The best time to visit Andaman Islands is from September to May. The peak season goes from October - March. During the month of December, the prices are hiked up because lots of travelers plan their vacations during that part of the year.  You can visit the Andaman Islands anytime between September to May. Travelers who want to enjoy the monsoon can visit Andaman during June and July. During June and July because of rain, the islands are seen in a different way. All water activities are operational throughout the year and on days when heavy rains take place the water activities get delayed or shifted to the next day.

How is the weather in Andaman Island during the time of the visit?

The weather in the Andaman Islands varies from 25 Degrees to 33 Degrees and it's a tropical climate throughout the year. Temperature wise even during peak summers the island temperate is around 30 - 35 Degrees.

Step 2 - How many days are required to visit Andaman?

To give a perspective of how many days are required will share the map of the Andaman Islands. The Andaman Islands are divided into North, Middle and South Andaman Islands. The majority of people who travel to Andaman Islands visit the south Andaman Islands that cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island.

Andaman Island Map

So basically, the number of days you want to visit the Andaman Islands varies upon how many places you plan to visit during your stay at the islands. Post the above itineraries you still have some offbeat places such as Long Island to cover which in itself requires 3 days.

For travelers who are short of time can consider a 4 days trip to Andaman Islands and cover Port Blair and Havelock Island as per the itinerary below. The first and the last days of your visit to Andaman should be in Port Blair as the only commercial airport of Andaman is in Port Blair. Other islands has to be visited in a ferry from Port Blair

Day 1 - Arrival - Stay at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel to Havelock Island Day 3 - Return from Havelock to Port Blair Day 4 - Departure

Step 3 - Things to visit in Andaman

Now while you are planning your visit to Andaman you will need to know what the best things to do in Andaman are and the major places that need to be visited. The top places in the Andaman Islands are

Port Blair Andaman Islands

Refer our detailed article about things to do in Andaman Islands to get all details about various things that one can do in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Knowing what you want to do in Andaman is crucial while planning your island trip. Check our some of our best articles about places, beaches, offbeat things in the islands that can help you select what you want to do in Andaman Beaches in Andaman Tourist places in Andaman Islands Offbeat places in Andaman

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets

Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ

Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.

When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.

Approx cost of flight per person from major cities

Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.

The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore

Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation

Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.

The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island

Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

At Havelock Island  Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

Likewise at Neil Island.

The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be

Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands

Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands

Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000

The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000

Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights  + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000

Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below

Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other

Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.

Ferry to havelock from Port Blair

The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :

Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean

Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online.  Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online

So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.

Step 6 - Cost of water activities

Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :

Andaman water sports seawalk

Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.

So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving  for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.

Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary

In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :

Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure

Cabs in Andaman

The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.

So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost

Step 8 - Food Cost

The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner

Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc

Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

Step 9 - Conclusion

Now, while you got to know what is the break up of the tour and you should plan your trip to Andaman Islands. The above same steps has to be followed whether you are visiting Andaman Islands from any part of India.

As your number of days increases, the cost of the tour based on your hotel selection increases.

Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

  • April 24, 2022

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

andaman nicobar trip plan

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

  • The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
  • Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
  • Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
  • Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
  • Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
  • The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Andaman Itinerary

  • Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
  • The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
  • Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
  • Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
  • Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
  • Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
  • If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
  • Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
  • Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Andaman Trip – Your Complete Travel Guide

Andaman & Nicobar

Last Updated on: Jul 16, 2017

About this blog: Pristine beaches, clear blue waters and exquisite marine life – This is what we thought before travelling to Andaman. What we got after our visit was much more. This blog is a complete and comprehensive travel guide for planning an Andaman trip. This Andaman Travel Guide has tips for best places to visit in Andaman, best things to do and other important travel information. Read on to know more.

Andaman is a wonder of nature. This archipelago provides a lot of attractions for tourists and backpackers alike. Andaman has some of the best beaches, most virgin natural trails and mesmerising sunsets. The place also has an interesting history and all these reasons were enough for us to plan an Andaman trip.

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

We had always been keener on visiting the mountains. So Andaman, the sea and beaches were quite fresh and lovely for us.

About Andaman & Nicobar Island

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprises 572 islands that lie at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Out of these 572 islands, only about 38 are inhabited. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by a 150 km wide channel known as the Ten Degree Channel.

The Andaman group has 325 islands while the Nicobar group has only 24 islands. North, middle and South Andaman are collectively known as the Great Andaman. The islands include Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, Rutland Island and Little Andaman in the south, which is separated from the Nicobar group of islands by the Ten Degree Channel.

The main islands of the Nicobar group are Car Nicobar in the North, Camorta, Katchall and Nancowry in the centre and Great Nicobar in the south.

Aerial view of Andaman from flight

Interestingly, Andaman Island is closer to Myanmar (190 km) and Sumatra (150 km) in Indonesia than it is to mainland India (almost 1200 km).

The islands are quite unexplored mainly due to the distance and accessibility from the mainland. And that is where the beauty of the place lies.

History of Andaman

Usually, before visiting any place, we look at the history of the place. It helps us to understand the place and people better. Andaman trip was no exception. While delving into the history of the place, I did find out some interesting facts.

That Andaman was a British penal settlement in the colonial era is known to all, but the place seems to have historic evidence older than that period.

  • It is not actually known when the first inhabitants came to this group of islands. It is believed that Andaman had a population over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence dates back to 2,200 years ago.
  • In between 1014 to 1042 AD, King Rajendra Chola I of the Chola Dynasty was the first one to colonize these islands and formed a naval base to launch expeditions against the Sriwijaya Empire of Indonesia.
  • Later the islands came under Danish East India Company and were under them till 1868. Finally, these islands were purchased by the British East India Company in 1869 and they later formed a penal settlement in these islands.

Top Places to visit in Andaman Trip

We realized in our Andaman trip that the place is a delight for both conventional tourists and backpackers alike. The list of places to visit in Andaman is quite a long one, but all these are worth your time. We will start with the conventional places and then go to the offbeat ones.

1. Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Also the largest town, it is also the entry point for all the other islands. So in all probability your trip will start from here.

There are a few places of interest in the town like the Cellular Jail , Samudrika Marine Museum, and water sports complex among others. And if you want to visit a beach, you can head towards the Corbyn’s Cove Beach. You can also enjoy water sports here.

Cellular Jail_Port Blair_Andaman Travel Guide

Things to do in Port Blair

  • Visit the Cellular Jail to see and understand the struggle of the freedom fighters who were sent to this penal settlement for serving punishment. Do not miss the light and sound show in the evening. . It shows the story of the India freedom fighters and how India got independence through the light and sound show.
  • Visit the Samudrika marine museum, water sports complex to enjoy water sports.
  • Visit the Corbyn’s Cove to get a vibe of the beach.

Day Trips from Port Blair

There are a number of day trips that you can do from Port Blair, all of them special in their own. If you have adequate time, you can do all of them, otherwise choose according to your preference.

Chidiya Tapu

Chidiya Tapu is around 30 km from Port Blair and the place is famous for its sunset and bird watching. You can make a day trip from Port Blair to Chidiya Tapu.

Wandoor Beach and Jolly Buoy Island

Jolly Buoy Island_Andaman

These 2 places can also be covered on a day trip from Port Blair. Jolly Buoy Island is a part of Mahatma Gandhi National Park and the place is famous for its crystal clear water and underwater coral reefs. Boats to Jolly Buoy start at 9 am in the morning from Wandoor and come back by 3 pm. So, if you are planning to take a ride to Jolly Buoy, please reach Wandoor before 9 am.

Chatham Saw Mill

Chatham Saw Mill

Chatham Saw Mill is the oldest and largest sawmill in Asia. But this is not the only reason that you should visit the sawmill. The history of the mill starts from the time when Lt. Archibald Blair landed at Port Blair in 1789 to establish a British settlement there, more so as a deportation centre for the convicts. The sawmill was earlier used to cater to the needs of the west.

Mill Timings: 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM except for Mondays and Thursdays.

North Bay Island

Jet Ski_Water sports at Andaman

Take day trips to North Bay Island and Ross Island. North Bay Island is known for water sports. You can do scuba diving, snorkelling, jet ski, sea walk and speed boat ride here. The island is an hour ferry ride from Port Blair Jetty.

2. Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Dweep)

Ross Island_Andaman

Ross Island is another place that will leave you spellbound. This island was the erstwhile capital of Andaman until 1941 when an earthquake destroyed the island. Ross Island was the headquarters of the Indian Penal Settlement for nearly 80 years.

The island had markets, bakery, stores, workshop, water distillation plant, church, tennis court, printing press, secretariat, hospital, cemetery, open air theatre and others. Today, everything has disappeared except some old dilapidated buildings, which housed some of these landmarks.

Usually, North Bay Island and Ross Island tour is done together in a day .

3. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

Havelock Island is the most popular island and also receives the highest footfall of tourists and will be a highlight of your Andaman trip. Havelock boasts of beautiful and pristine beaches, turquoise sea and some of the best diving sites in South Asia.

Radhanagar Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Asia. You can rent a motorbike or scooty like we did and explore the island. We recommend you to spend at least 2 nights at Havelock Island. Havelock Island is also a backpackers’ delight.

Things to do in Havelock Island

  • Visit and enjoy a great time on the beautiful beaches of Havelock Island. Visit the Radhanagar Beach during the sunset and Kalapathar beach during the sunrise. Other beaches are Vijaynagar beach and Govindnagar Beach.
  • Go for scuba diving. As already mentioned Havelock has some of the best diving sites in South Asia. It is better to take a dive from the diving schools that are near Beach no 3 & 4.
  • Laze around the Elephant Beach. Elephant Beach is about 20 minutes boat ride from Havelock Island. With white sand and beautiful coral reefs, the place is an absolute winner. Also, you can indulge in water sports like snorkelling, sea walk and glass-bottom boat ride here.
  • You can also trek to the Elephant Beach from Radhanagar village.

Planning to visit Havelock Island? Here is a complete Guide to Havelock Island with all the details.

4. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Natural Bridge_Neil Island_Shaheed Dweep

This beautiful island is a backpacker’s paradise. The turquoise blue sea waters and golden sandy beaches are a treat to the eyes. Apart from the pristine beaches, there is also a natural bridge at Neil Island. Shaheed Dweep or Neil Island is a small island and you can explore the entire island in a day on a two-wheeler. Like in Havelock, you can hire a motorbike or scooty here too and explore the island.

A visit to Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep can be done in a day trip, but staying for a night is highly recommended. Neil Island was our favourite place in the entire Andaman trip.

Places to visit in Neil Island

Visit the beautiful beaches of Neil – Bharatpur Beach, Sitapur Beach, Laxmanpur Beach and the natural Beach.

At Bharatpur Beach, you will find a diving centre. You can go scuba diving, glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling here as well.

5. Baratang Island

Baratang Island_Andaman

Baratang Island is situated between South and Middle Island. It has beautiful beaches, mangrove creeks, limestone caves and mud volcanoes. Baratang Island is about 100 km from Port Blair and it takes almost 5 hours to reach and the conditions of the road are quite poor. We are not discouraging, but visit this place only if you like to explore the unknown and are not intimidated by long hours and poor conditions of the journey.

Please note that you will need a permit to visit the limestone caves.

6. Diglipur and North Andaman

Ross and Smith Island

This is perhaps the best-kept secret of Andaman trip. North Andaman is yet an unexplored region of the island. It takes almost 12 hours to reach Diglipur by road from Port Blair. But once you are there, you will be mesmerised by the virgin beauty of the place.

Places to visit in Diglipur

Ross and Smith Island

Ross & Smith islands are actually two islands – Ross & Smith joined together by a sand bar to make a single group of islands. The water is crystal clear and the sand bar appears during low tide. During the high tide, the sand bar disappears leaving a trail of water between the two islands.

Lamiya Bay Beach: Lamiya Bay beach marks the foothill of the Saddle Peak, the highest peak in North Andaman.

Mud Volcano at Shyamnagar & Limestone cave at Diglipur: Like in Baratang, you will see mud volcanoes in Shyamnagar in North Andaman. Limestone caves in Diglipur are also known as Alfred caves and located near Ramnagar Beach.

How to reach andaman.

Port Blair is the gateway to Andaman. You can reach Port Blair either by flight or ship.

By Air: You will get flights to Andaman from all the major cities of India.

By Ship: If you wish to experience the life at the seas, then you can reach Port Blair by ships that are available from Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakapatnam. It usually takes 4 days to reach Port Blair.

Flights are thus the easiest and convenient option of getting to Andaman.

Government Ferry at Andaman

Island Hopping: How to get around on an Andaman Trip?

Once you are at Andaman, you cannot escape island hopping. There are two types of trips.

Islands for Day Trips

These islands are nearer to Port Blair and you can make a day trip to these islands. Simply head towards the Aberdeen Jetty and pick up an Andaman tour packages operator to make your bookings instantly for  Andaman Honeymoon Packages  as well. Your hotels can also do the bookings for you. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy Islands are some of these islands where you can make a day trip.

Islands for Night Stay

If you want to visit the Havelock and Neil Island, then you have to go to the Phoenix Bay Jetty . There are Government boats as well as private operators. You cannot pre-book in a government boat. You have to stand in a queue in the morning to book your tickets. Among the private operators, Makruzz is the best.

We had travelled in both the government ships and Makruzz. Very obviously, Makruzz is faster than the government counterparts, but what I liked in the government ferry is that you can simply roam about everywhere in the ferry and can enjoy on the deck watching the endless blue seas.

Makruzz cruise_Andaman Island Hopping

How to get around within the islands?

You can hire 2 wheelers at both Havelock and Neil Island to explore the places. Also, you can get cabs if you travelling greater distances. We had hired a scooty at both Havelock and Neil Island to move around.

Some amazing things to do in Andaman

Water sports in andaman.

Water sports at Andaman_Things to do in Andaman

Andaman is heaven for water sports. Bestowed with beautiful coral reefs and clear waters, the archipelago boasts of the best underwater activities. You can go scuba diving, snorkelling and sea walking. For water sports like jet ski ride, banana boat etc, North Bay Island is a good place. You can also do scuba diving and snorkelling here. But we would recommend you to scuba dive either in Havelock Island or Neil Island.

Scuba Diving in Andaman

scuba diving experience in Andaman

Andaman has some of the best diving sites in the country and this we have been reiterating for long. Well, it is not without reason, because the beautiful coral reefs and marine life is simply amazing. For Scuba Diving in Andaman , we will recommend Havelock and Neil Island.

If you are doing scuba at Havelock, don’t do it at Elephant Beach, but do it at the diving sites near Beach No. 3 & 4. There are a number of operators and you can take a pick. We had done with Barefoot Scuba in Andaman. For Scuba diving, don’t forget to take the guidance of certified PADI instructors.

Where to stay in Andaman?

Places to stay in Havelock_Andaman

Andaman has plenty of options for hotels and in all possible budgets. For your trip to Andaman, we would recommend you to stop for the night at Port Blair and Havelock Island. If time permits, spend one night at Neil Island too. Both Port Blair and Havelock has a lot of options. Diglipur and North Andaman have relatively lesser options. Sio it would not be a bad idea to book beforehand.

Camping at the beaches is not allowed at Andaman unless the resorts arrange it with permission.

What to eat in Andaman?

While at Andaman, it will be a sin not to try the seafood. At Havelock, you will find some great food at Barefoot Bar and Restaurant, Full Moon Café, Black Beard’s Bistro, Red Snapper and Anju-Coco Resto. Neil Island has very limited options in regards to food.

Things to eat at Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Is any permit required for Andaman Trip?

Indian nationals do not require a permit for visit to Andaman.

For Foreign Nationals

All foreign nationals required a RAP (Restricted Area Permit) to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which is easily available on arrival at Port Blair by flight or ship from the Immigration Authorities for 30 days subject to availability of valid visa. This is extendable for another 15 days in certain cases with permission and the delegated authority to extend permission is the Superintendent of Police, FRO/CID, Port Blair.

The Restricted Area Permit can also be obtained from the Indian Missions overseas and also from the Foreigners Registration Offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata and from the Immigration Authorities at the Airport of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Recently, to promote tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, foreign tourists will not require RAP for visiting the following 30 Islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:

(1) East Island (2) North Andaman (3) Smith Island (4) Curfew Island (5) Stewart Island (6) Landfall Island (7) Aves Island (8) Middle Andaman (9) Long Island (10) Strait Island (11) North Passage (12) Baratang (13) South Andaman (14) Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep (15) Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep (16) Flat Bay (17) North Sentinel Island (18) Little Andaman (19) Chowra (20) Tillang Chong Island (21) Teressa (22) Katchal (23)Nancowry (24) Kamorta (25) Pulomilo (26) Great Nicobar (27) Little Nicobar(28) Narcondum Island (29) Interview Island and (30) Viper Island (Day visit only).

Visiting the tribal areas is strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners. So if anyone is trying to sell such Andaman trip, refuse.

Andaman and Nicobar Island

What is the best time to visit Andaman?

Andaman can be visited throughout the year. However, the best season of the island is from mid-November to early March. This is considered to be the best season to visit Andaman.

Network and wifi

Although you will get mobile services, the data connection at Andaman is very poor. Internet and wifi services are quite bad here. Both Neil and Havelock Islands had very poor mobile network connection also. So enjoy the place without internet and wifi. We were quite happy to spend a few days without these so-called “essentials”.

ATMs in Andaman

You will find a number of ATMs in Port Blair. Havelock too has a few ATMs near Beach No 1 or the Jetty. There are a couple of ATMs in both Neil Island and Diglipur. It is better to carry cash with you while travelling to Neil and Diglipur.

Beaches in Andaman

Is it safe to travel in Andaman?

Yes, Andaman is quite safe to travel. The island is quite a peaceful place with not many instances of problems of safety. Of late, the news of the death Christian missionary in North Sentinel Island has been going around. Be aware that a few aboriginal tribes have their home in the remote islands of Andaman & Nicobar and they have kept themselves distant from the civilization. They do not take intrusion in their land and life lightly. So as travellers, we would request you not to visit the tribal areas without a guide. Also, most of the tribal areas are strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners.

Secondly, do keep in mind about the safety measures at the sea. Do not go out to swim all alone even if you are a great swimmer. Also please adhere to your instructor or trainer while scuba diving and snorkeling. Stay safe and have a great trip.

I am visiting andaman next week :

1. Glass bottom ride , sea walk is better in port blair or havelock ?

2. What are the charges for sea walk / glass bottom ride ?

3. If I rent a scooter at port blair / havelock will the ride be hot during day time ?

4. Is advance booking needed for any of the above?

Please reply at the earliest

Sea walk is better in Havelock Island/ Sea walk charges will be around INR 3000-4000 per head. Though we are not sure about the exact charges now. Days will be sunny. I dont think it will be that hot in February. No advance booking is needed. Hope these answers your queries.

Hello Agni & Amrita

Thanks for this nice article – very helpful!

I wonder if it’s necessary to book flights from Chennai to Port Blair in advance (December/January) or are there always some seats left?

Hey Alex, thanks for reading our blog. We usually book our flight tickets 1 to 2 weeks in advance (not months!). But usually and hopefully, you will get tickets from Chennai at shorter notice as well. However, prices can be steeper at short notice. Hope this helps. If you have any more queries, please drop us a mail. Thanks again!

Guide to Andaman and Nicobar Islands trip!

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an Indian archipelago consisting of 572 islands. In simple terms, an archipelago is a chain, cluster or collection of islands, or sometimes a sea containing a small number of scattered islands. Andaman Nicobar Trip will leave you with memories of a lifetime!

Located on the Bay of Bengal, to the south-east of the Indian Peninsular sub-continent, these Islands have a rich and flourishing ecosystem which includes white-sand beaches, mangroves, and tropical rainforests.

The Islands are much closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than mainland India of which it is a part. Many parts of the Islands are still to be explored due to the sheer distance (1200 km) and the lack of accessibility that it poses. This adds to the overall charm of the Islands as it is a perfect spot for a week of Digital Detox, a trip with friends or even solo traveling here for a few days of peace and serenity.

This archipelago serves as a perfect spot for conventional tourists but it’s an experiential traveler’s paradise. Andaman Nicobar Trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Here we’ll see a few tips on how to make your trip to the Islands different from that of a run-off-the-mill tourist.

Trekking and Backpacking in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Use your time at Andaman and Nicobar Islands to wander where the wifi is weak, to really understand that nature is not just a place that you visit, but is your home. The Islands have on offer many locations that are perfect for a day’s trek. The thriving ecosystem in these spots adds to the adventure and travelers can experience the soul-enriching feeling you get when you are lost in the right direction. More and more people are including treks , bird-watching and water sports in their Andaman Nicobar trip these days.

Mount Harriet National Park – Andaman Nicobar tourism

The Mt. Harriet National Park has some of the largest and highest peaks in the Andaman archipelago and is easily accessible from Port Blair , the capital city and the main point of entry to the Islands from the mainland. The park is covered with beautiful thick forests and is an epitome of natural beauty.

The park also boasts a collection of rare birds like the Andaman Wood pigeon and the Nicobar Megapode , which you can keep an eye out for as you trek through a canopy of huge trees. The nature trail of approximately 16 kms leads to the beautiful Madhuban Beach. Most Indians have seen a picture of this beautiful beach as it was printed on the old 20 rupee note. It is one of the best places to visit in Andaman and Nicobar islands.

How to get there : The park is accessible from Port Blair via Bamboo flat from Port Blair by ferry service or by road journey

Chidiya Tapu

When a place boasts that it has the best sunset in all of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where there are a huge number of beaches, you can be sure that the sunset is going to be legendary. Trekking enthusiasts are in luck as Chidiya Tapu Beach is the starting point of the trek to Mundapahad , where there is a very high, black cliff which looks out to the open sea. It is a highlight of Andaman Nicobar tourism.

The view from this point is exquisite and is totally worthy of the13km trek to get there. There is a lot of flora and fauna to look for as you trek across. This is one of the best places to visit during the Andaman Nicobar Trip.

How to get there : Chidia Tapu is roughly 30 kilometres from the city of Port Blair. Most travellers rent a car or bike to reach Chidiya Tapu from Port Blair. Travellers can take the winding road, through the forest and hills, which also passes through the rugged Kalapathar Beach

Mud Volcano Hiking in Baratang Island

The only active volcano in India is on Barren Island , one of the southern islands of the archipelago. But landing on this Island is strictly prohibited. The next best thing Andaman and Nicobar have to offer is the chance to hike over Mud Volcanoes on Baratang Island .

This peculiar natural phenomenon is something to behold as you’d be walking across thousands of years of Geography. The famous limestone caves of Baratang are also close by.

How to get there: The Government Bus from Port Blair is the most cost-effective and reliable way to get through the 4-hour journey.

A journey through time

For a group of Islands that has such limited access from the mainland, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands sure have a lot of history in them. Some of the Islands were used as out-stations by the British East India Company and there are a handful of museums in the Islands that would thrill any history buff.

Cellular Jail – Andaman Nicobar Trip

This colonial prison, constructed by the Britishers, for the primary purpose of incarcerating Indian Political Prisoners, is an embodiment of the darkest chapters of the country’s struggle for freedom . The prison also features a Light and Sound Show in the evenings once the jail tours are done. That eerie feeling you get when you understand the things that freedom fighters had to go through to get us the freedom that we sometimes take for granted, forces you to do some soul searching. This is the biggest attraction of Andaman and Nicobar islands tourism.

How to get there : It’s within the city limits and a private cab can be taken from the airport which is just 4 km away.

Ross Island – Places to see in Andaman Nicobar

First occupied in 1782, the Ross Island (currently known as Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Dweep ) was turned into an administrative Headquarters in 1857 and was used for 85 years. There are ruins of old offices made by Indian prisoners and the ageing on these ruins creates an overall tranquil ambience. A calm and peaceful lunch soaking in all the history associated with it is an excellent plan on those who plan to visit Ross Island. This is one of the highlight of the Andaman Nicobar Trip.

How to get there : Getting a bus to Aberdeen Jetty, from where a ferry can be hired to get to Ross Island. There is also an option of heli-taxi service albeit it is quite expensive.

Museums in Port Blair

There are three different museums within a 10 KM radius of the Port Blair Airport namely The Samudrika Marine Museum, The Forests museum and The Zonal Anthropological Museum. The marine museum has exhibits that showcase the thriving aquatic life around the Island Group.

The one of a kind Forest museum lets the visitors have a glance at the variety of wildlife found on the Island and the Anthropological Museum is particularly unique as it features the lifestyle and culture of the four tribes found in the islands . You must not miss it while indulging in Andaman and Nicobar Islands tourism.

How to get there: It is advisable to hire a private cab and visit all three museums in a single day stretch. The museums are within city limits and easily accessible

Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar

Now it is time for exploring the Vivid Culture . Andaman and Nicobar Islands are home to four Negrito Tribes namely Sentinelese , Greater Andamanese, Onge and Jarwas , and two Mongoloid tribes- Shompens and the Nicobarese . These tribes are estimated to have arrived at the Islands over 60,000 years ago and their lifestyle holds cement over this fact as they are primitive hunter-gatherers and remain isolated from the mainstream population.

The Government has strict regulations when it comes to visiting these tribes although it is possible if you can acquire government-certified RAP( Restricted Area Permits). The Jarawa tribes found in Baratang Island is the most accessible tribal visit of the lot. These tribes can be seen living their peaceful simple lives in the midst of the virgin green forests.

You can get a glimpse of their lives while riding along the Jarwa creek, on the way to the Limestone caves. Care should be taken so that you are not scammed into illegal “human safaris” as the Government has strict rules in place to keep the interaction with the tribes to a minimum. It is good that we are aware of the existence of such a lifestyle in a fast-paced world but their protection should also be our responsibility.

How to get there : Access the ATR (Andaman Trunk Road), which cuts through the Jarawa dwelling area, on your way to Baratang.

The Beaches – Andaman and Nicobar Islands tourism

The shallow depth, vivid flora and fauna , flourishing marine ecosystem, minimal pollution, crystal clear water, and beautiful white sand makes the beaches in Andaman and Nicobar perfect. These beaches can give you everything you wish for while at a coastal vacation . Needless to be said, the beautiful beaches are the main selling point of the Island’s tourism.

You can’t go wrong while choosing among the exquisite beaches of Andaman and Nicobar, nevertheless, these are the top three. These beaches are the biggest draws of the Andaman Nicobar tourism.

Wandoor Beach

Perfectly serene and Beautiful, the Wandoor Beach located 25km from Port Blair is a Photographer’s paradise . This beach comes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Marine Park making it a perfect location to spot a variety of Flora and Fauna .

Scuba Diving under professional guidance and Rides on Glass bottom boats over coral reefs are a speciality of Wandoor Beach. Snorkelling can also be easily done due to the shallow depth and wide shoreline . Do include this beach in your Andaman Nicobar Trip itinerary.

How to get there: The beach is 25 km from the airport and public transport, rickshaws or cabs can be taken to get to the beach

Merk Bay Beach

This pristine beach located on the North Passage Island is fairly less frequented by tourists than the other beaches because of the dense mangrove forests surrounding the beach that bars ships and boats to get too close. This adds to the overall beauty of the Beach and it is one of the most remote and beautiful beaches you can visit in Andaman. The water is perfect for snorkelling and also keep an eye out for Dolphins while you are at it.

How to get there : Boats are regularly available from Port Blair to Long Island three times a week or you can choose to take a bus from Port Blair to reach Rangat and then take a boat from Yeratta to Long Island. Once you reach Long Island, a boat safari can be taken to get to Merk Bay. The one hour journey can be made more fun by booking the glass-bottom boat.

Radhanagar Beach- Andaman and Nicobar islands tourism

Radhanagar Beach located on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) is quite easily the most famous beach in the archipelago. Its beauty is so highly regarded by its visitors that it was named the Best Beach in Asia and 7 th best in the world by Time Magazine . What is stopping you from planning that Andaman Nicobar Trip?

The panoramic view of the turquoise water meeting the long stretch of white sand is a frame, worthy of praise even from the Heavens. The soft waves and clear water makes you want to go for a swim almost immediately. More information on other beaches and locations in the Island cluster can be found here

How to get there : Public and private buses, Rental Cabs and jeeps are available from Havelock Boat Jetty to the beach, which is 10.5km away. There is also an option of renting scooters

27 Mar 2023

Whether people like it or not as trends change, they too do and that is exactly the case with family trips! Family trips are no more just about visiting either religious places nor just a trip to the nearby park but much more. As studies suggest, as trends change, people prefer destinations that offer variety and are beautiful. So, a destination known for its stunning beaches and tropical rainforests is everything magical became an escape for Hemant and while he with his family spent 7 days in Andaman and Nicobar he set out major travel goals. Don’t believe us? Well, read what he has to say and know!

The memories that we made on our Andaman trip from Delhi are priceless and something we would treasure for a lifetime! My family and I wanted to visit a place where we can get the experience of beaches, long coastlines and mainly the underwater activities. The place is not so crowded and somehow offbeat and that was why we chose Andaman as our travel destination and we are so happy that we made that choice!

Trip Itinerary For 7 Days In Andaman And Nicobar

Day 1: Arrival; Light & Sound Show Day 2: Havelock Island Day 3: Beach Hopping Day 4: Sightseeing Day 5: Baratang Trip Day 6: Water Sports 7: Departure

Weather In Andaman In November

We visited Andaman during mid November and it is the most suitable time to visit this place as the tourist season has just started after monsoons and one will not find much crowd. It was a typical tropical climate there with average temperature around 24°C. Days were mostly sunny and the best part was the clear sea water and to explore underwater life. You should definitely consider all the factors before finalising your Andaman trip plan.

Experiences From 7 Days In Andaman And Nicobar

If you are feeling that 7 is such a big number and spending so many days in a small place then wait till we tell you about our experiences here and you will know why we decided for a long trip!

1. Cellular Jail: Light & Sound Show

Day1-Portblair Local tour of Cellular jail

If you are looking for best places to visit in Andaman in 7 days, this will be our top pick. The Light and sound show at Cellular Jail was spectacular and very realistic. It will take you to the pre-independence era and will give you an actual feeling of the atrocities done by cruel Britishers on our brave freedom fighters. Narration is just superb. The history of this historic monument will give you goosebumps.

Snorkeling In Andaman Is All About Witnessing The Magical World Underwater In 2023

2. Havelock Island: Beachy Vibes

Day6-Ross and North Bay

Havelock Island is famous for a reason and we saw that when we spent 7 days in Andaman and Nicobar. Radhanagar Beach is one of the most serene and beautiful beaches. We actually felt that one day was not enough to experience this place in its entirety. We enjoyed it a lot there and didn’t want to come back, and would definitely recommend to include this in your Andaman itinerary for 7 days.

3. Beach Hopping: Too Many Beaches, Yet Not Enough

hopping the Kala Pathar Beach -

We took a ferry from the Swaraj Dweep to Shaheed Dweep where the Kalapathar Beach is located and realised that missing this place would have been such a huge mistake! This beach is stunning. We saw high and low tides on the beach and the black rocks after which this beach was named. Most stunning and gorgeous pictures of our tour were captured here. It’s the only place in Andaman to experience six shades of water altogether. It is famous for its eye-catching sunrise. It gives an opportunity to watch many shades of Red, Pink, Orange, etc in sea water due to hide and seek play between the sun and clouds. We then went to the Shaheed Dweep and went to Laxmanpur Beach to see the natural coral bridge. It has two living natural coral formations in shape of a bridge

Visiting Andaman In June 2023 Is A Bang On Idea, Know Why!

4. Baratrang: Witnessing Jarawas

Day4-Portblair-Wandoor Beach

It was the most awaited moment from the trip because we so wanted to see ‘Jarawas”, which is one of the most ancient tribes that exist on earth and are still live in their primitive state. We were so lucky to sight them 4-5 times during the 100 kms road journey through the restricted and preserved forest area by the administration. Amazing! A family of five (a man, a woman and 3 kids) just 4 feet tall and wearing only garlands carrying water pots to their house was such an amazing sight. It was a lifetime moment, actually and one of the best things of our Andaman 7 days itinerary.

5. Water Activities: The Most Fun

andaman nicobar trip plan

We visited Ross Island and explored the well maintained British set-up of pre-independence era. It was great to know how this small island played an important role in saving the main Port Blair city from the destructive Tsunami. Secondly, we went to North Bay island where we enjoyed scuba-diving, snorkelling and Coral Safari which was a great experience.

Our Hotels In Andaman And Nicobar

In Port Blair, we stayed in two different Hotels. First was Hotel Palika Palace. It is located at a prime location just 3 kms away from the Veer Savarkar International Airport and very near to Cellular Jail, Anthropological Museum, and many other tourist places. The room offered was on the 3rd floor, a big one to accommodate four persons. The second one was Hotel Suriya (LYME Hotels), situated very near to Phoenix Bay Jetty. It is also an ordinary one with small rooms but the facilities offered were amazing. In Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), we stayed in Radhakrishna resort. There are very limited accommodations in Swaraj Dweep and this resort is one of the best. Warm welcome, excellent room service, beautiful interior (totally wooden finished), in-house restaurant with tasty meals are the USPs of this resort. In Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island), we stayed in Coral Garden Resort. Again, this resort is one of the best places to stay here. There are numerous options for good hotels and resorts to include in your Andaman tour plan for 7 days.

Restaurants In Andaman And Nicobar

Since we are vegetarians, we preferred taking our lunch in restaurants where we can get good and hygienic vegetarian food. Vegetarian food is easily available at almost every restaurant in Andaman, so getting homely food far from home was very easy and satisfying. A normal home like vegetarian meal for people can be availed for just 400 bucks. Andaman is heaven for sea-food lovers. They can enjoy a long listed variety of sea-food. One can have Coconut water, fruit-salads, snacks etc at beach-side outlets during outings. If you are travelling with kids, it is advisable to carry some handy dry snacks and drinking water all the time during the tour.

Andaman Travel Tips: Know About The Do’s And Don’ts Before Planning Your Vacation In 2023

Shopping In Andaman

Our shopping experience in Andaman was amazing. We shopped at Neil Island at a small shop situated at Lakshmanpur Beach. Outside every beach you will find many shops selling different items made from seashells like earrings, key rings, necklaces made from real pearls etc. One can also explore “Sagarika”, a chain of official outlets of the Andaman administration across the Andaman Islands. Here, one can find a vast range of souvenirs (handicraft items made of sea-shells and pearls, coconut shell, virgin coconut oil, etc)for near and dear ones of all age groups, for very reasonable pricing (Fixed prices, No bargain). One can buy idol sets of the Jarawa tribe, t-shirts with printed tags and maps of Andaman Islands, ornaments of pearls and shell as token of long lasting memories of this trip.

Andaman And Nicobar Travel Tips

  • Keep your original ID proofs always handy throughout the trip.
  • Check-out time at all the hotels/ resorts is 08:00 AM. Be on time.
  • Cruise/ Ferries have fixed departure times. So, respect the time schedule.
  • Islanders are given preference while issuing tickets for journey by government ferries between the islands. If seats are left vacant, then only tickets are issued to the tourists.
  • Don’t waste water and electricity as it takes a lot of resources to generate and supply these two islands.
  • Follow traffic rules (don’t break or change lanes) while roaming through Port Blair city.
  • If you want to take memorable pics standing on deck of the ship, prefer government ferries for journey between the islands. While on private cruise (Makruzz or others), you will be locked inside the AC cabin and not allowed to go on the deck.
  • Always keep yourself hydrated during outings. Always carry drinking water.
  • Always keep extra clothes while visiting beaches or going for water sports activities.
  • Mobile connectivity in islands is very limited. Even, forget to use mobile internet in Port Blair city. Here, only BSNL, Airtel and Vodafone networks work. In Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, only BSNL network works.
  • To make your trip economically cheaper, you can hire a scooter (Activa and others)/ bikes on rent for local roaming for just 600 bucks per day. Here, you can bargain too. This facility is available on almost all islands.
  • Don’t forget to watch the light & sound show at Cellular Jail. Go scuba diving or snorkelling if you really want a close view of under-water life. Knowing how to swim is not at all mandatory for these activities. Coral safari and glass bottom ride are not giving that good view of corals and other sea species.
  • Never collect sea shells on beaches. It destroys the natural life of aquatic species. There are provisions of hefty penalties as well as imprisonment under the laws, if found in possession of these items during security check at airport/ seaport while returning from Andaman Islands. If you want to bring items made of shells, you should buy these items from authorised shops and get proper bills for the same (prefer “Sagarika” outlets, one is there inside the airport too).

Travel Guide for Andaman and Nicobar Island First-Timers:

When is the best time to visit andaman & nicobar islands.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited at any time of the year, except during the rainy season. However, the most popular season for tourists is the winter season, which generally falls between November and February. If you are not bothered by the summer heat of India, you can also plan a trip during the months of March and April.

The islands are a popular tourist destination due to their picturesque beaches, scenic views, and serene environment. The archipelago is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and offers ample opportunities for water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

During the winter months, the weather is pleasant and conducive for outdoor activities. The temperature ranges between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, and the humidity is relatively low. This makes it an ideal time to explore the various beaches and indulge in water sports.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, it is recommended to plan your trip during the shoulder season, which falls between September and October or March and April. During this time, the weather is still pleasant, and the tourist inflow is comparatively lower.

On the other hand, the monsoon season , which falls between May and September, should be avoided as the islands receive heavy rainfall and strong winds during this period. The choppy seas and inclement weather make it difficult to indulge in water sports, and many tourist activities are suspended during this time.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the winter season. However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and are not bothered by the summer heat, you can plan your trip during the shoulder season. Whatever time you choose to visit, the islands are sure to leave you mesmerized with their natural beauty and tranquil environment.
