Great Nicobar

Campbell bay, indira point, galatea national park and more, table of content, about great nicobar.

Sunrise at B-Quarry beach

Great Nicobar is the very last island of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago . It is the largest of the Nicobar group of islands, spanning 921 km, and is home to about 9000 people.

A large portion of the island is covered by dense forests which are home to a variety of endemic biodiversity including the Nicobar megapode, the Nicobar tree shrew, and the Nicobar long-tailed macaque. The most common visitors to the island are naturalists, birders, and researchers.

This huge island is a slow-paced, pristine location that is home to a close-knit community of individuals who have made their living there over several generations. The working population is split into groups that run small grocery shops, eateries, service centers, or own coconut plantations.

A significant group that is present on the island is government employees. These individuals are stationed at the Naval, Coast Guard, and Army regiments. Other government employees include those working for the BSNL Telecom Service, the Post Office, and the State Transport Service.

Highlights – Great Nicobar

1. permissions.

Indian citizens do not require prior permission to visit the island of Great Nicobar. Foreign nationals need to visit the Assistant Commissioner’s office in Port Blair before making their travel reservations. Once on the island, tourists need to meet officials from the Forest Department in Campbell Bay to arrange visits to Biosphere Reserve and Galathea National Park.

2.Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve and Galathea National Park

For naturalists and birders alike, both of these places hold great significance in terms of the species of trees, animals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. To enter these areas, one needs to inform the Forest Department in Campbell Bay and seek prior permission. Individuals and groups are both allowed to visit, and guides can be arranged for the nature trail in the Biosphere Reserve by speaking to the Range Forest Officer in the Forest Department.

3.Indira Point

Indira Point is a key aspect of the Great Nicobar Island tourism. The southernmost tip of the country, it has been renamed in honor of Indira Gandhi. There is a lighthouse guide ship traveling to Malaysia and Malacca through India. While this point was reachable via road, the tsunami inundated the entire area and a part of the lighthouse owing to which this area currently cannot be traversed to. The government is in the process of rebuilding this road, and this will allow travelers to visit the historical place shortly.

How to Reach Great Nicobar?

can you visit nicobar islands

The fastest way to Great Nicobar from Port Blair is by air. The only aircraft tourists can travel by is a helicopter since the runway is not long enough for passenger airplanes to land. The rates vary for islanders, Indian non-islanders, and foreign nationals.

The cost per ticket for Indian nationals who are not from the islands of Andaman and Nicobar is INR 13400.  However, every island on the way from Port Blair to Great Nicobar has a specific quota and it is therefore difficult for tourists to find a seat on the helicopter.

Helicopters fly to and from Great Nicobar twice or thrice a week. For foreign nationals, it is necessary to inquire at the counter about the exact cost of the ticket. Tickets have to be applied for on the morning before the date of travel from the gate at the Secretariat and the list of selected passengers will be put up the same evening. Remember, the office remains closed on Saturdays and Sundays so for travel on Monday, the application will have to be submitted on Friday.

can you visit nicobar islands

Although longer, taking a government ship to Great Nicobar is a surer way to travel. The easiest way to get your tickets is to visit the Directorate of Shipping Service (DSS) office in Port Blair. There are a number of ships of different sizes and facilities that are available based on your budget. The average cost for an Indian non-islander is between INR 2400 and INR 3000 for a seat in a first-class cabin.

The frequency depends most often on the weather; the stormier and rainier the weather, the less frequent they become.

Tribes of Great Nicobar

The population of Great Nicobar is largely comprised of indigenous people and settlers- individuals from the mainland whose families settled here well before and around the time of India’s independence.

There are two indigenous Nicobar island tribes– the Shompen and the Nicobarese.

The Shompen tribe is one that does not interact much with the urban settlements of the island. Designated as a Scheduled Tribe of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands , they live in the forest areas of the island and follow a hunter-gatherer way of living. They engage in barter with different communities – both, the settlers and the Nicobarese.

The Nicobarese is a term used to refer to the dominant tribes of the Nicobar Islands. These tribes are divided by island and the central location for this group of tribes is Car Nicobar. Although each tribe has its own language, the Nicobarese are all familiar with the Car Nicobarese language which is descended from the Roman script. Before the tsunami, the Nicobarese followed animism – worshipping animals and natural symbols on which they depended. However, after the tsunami, most of them have converted to Christianity. Some of the others who are still dependent on the forests, still follow animism.

Post-tsunami, lifestyles have changed completely for both the tribes and they have become more urbanized . For the Nicobarese especially, their livelihoods have changed from being forest-dependent to more market-centric.

Both tribes have been relocated and their new houses are made of materials that are different from the natural resources that they used earlier.

Tribal tourism is prohibited and individuals are only allowed to interact with them for research, after seeking prior permission from the Tribal Council.

How long to stay? / Suggested Itinerary for Great Nicobar

Unlike the Andaman Islands , Nicobar Island tourism is not very developed. It is still in the beginning stages, with a lot of the government’s initiatives focusing on developing facilities for the local citizens after the disastrous effects of the 2004 tsunami before turning the attention to tourism.

When planning a trip to Great Nicobar, it is important to keep in mind the frequency of ships – a factor that is largely influenced by the weather conditions. Spending about a week to ten days on this slow-paced island would be more than enough to explore and indulge in all that you want.

1.Cost per Day

Tourists can stay only in Campbell Bay and travel to other parts of the island from here.

2.Accommodation

The accommodation has to be booked in the Panchayat Tourism Guest House at Campbell Bay. At the Panchayat Tourism Guest House, the cost per bed per night is INR 400.

Accommodation can be booked prior to travel by calling the concerned guesthouse. It is also a good practice to confirm the cost before traveling.

One can do so by calling the following numbers: Panchayat Tourism Guesthouse: 03193 264267 / +91 9474229928.

For government officials, there is also the option to stay at the APWD (Andaman Public Works Department) Guesthouse. Here, the cost for a standard non-AC room is INR 500 and INR 800 for a standard AC room.

This reserve is home to several endemic species that are found only in the Nicobar Islands including the Nicobar megapode ( Megapodius nicobariensis ), the edible-nest swiftlet ( Aerodramus fuciphagus ), the Nicobar long-tailed macaque ( Macaca fascicularis umbrosa ), Nicobar tree shrew, and the giant robber crab (or coconut crab,  Birgus latro ). When to visit Great Nicobar?

Like most tropical areas, Great Nicobar receives heavy rainfall throughout the year. The months with the least rainfall (December to April) are ideal to enjoy the best weather and outdoor activities.

Getting Around Great Nicobar

Great Nicobar is divided into multiple smaller towns, with Campbell Bay as its main area of activity. There are two main roads – North-South Road and East-West Road – that connect the entire island. Within Campbell Bay, one can travel using local auto-rickshaws.

To go from one part of the island to another, there are local government buses that ply regularly from Campbell Bay (0km) to Shastri Nagar (35km), with stops at each town in-between. If you hold a two-wheeler license, it is also possible for you to hire one with or without gear to help you move around during your stay. In addition, four-wheelers can also be hired but are quite expensive. In most cases, cars are required only to go to Galathea National Park or the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve to where buses do not directly ply.

However, the town of Campbell Bay is small enough to be covered by a walk. So if you love going on long walks or simply want a breath of fresh air, put on your walking shoes and get going!

Where/What to Eat Great Nicobar?

Meals can be eaten at the Tourism Guesthouse or at Suruchi Restaurant. There are also local eateries as well as a few chaat places at the Jetty Market and Zero Market. One of the most frequented eateries is the one run by Mr. Simachalam right opposite the Tourist Guesthouse.

The average cost per meal at any of the eateries is INR 150. Chaat varies from INR 10 to INR 50.

Nightlife in Great Nicobar

Owling – If you enjoy birdwatching in any capacity, the Nicobar Scops Owl is a true treat for the eyes. This small owl is endemic to the Nicobars and can be spotted in several places in and near Campbell Bay. The only other owl found on Great Nicobar is the Brown Hawk Owl, also known as the Brown Boobook.

While there are no bird guides on the island, it is fairly easy to check where these owls can be spotted and what times they are usually seen by using citizen science databases like eBird.

Enjoy the natural night lights – A rare sight anywhere in the world, the beaches of Great Nicobar light up at night, in the literal sense of the word! Bioluminescent phytoplankton that resides on the beach often lights up the shore when waves crash after nightfall. The woods surrounding some of the beaches are also inhabited by fireflies that light up trees like Christmas lights.

Important Information about Great Nicobar

  • Travelling and tickets : The infrequency of the ships plying to and from Great Nicobar could be a damper on your plans if you do not plan sufficiently ahead of time. Make sure you have a few days’ buffers in place if you intend to fly back to the mainland from Port Blair as soon as you return from Great Nicobar. If you have plans to explore Andaman by visiting Neil, Havelock, and Ross, you might want to give yourself at least 7-10 days before booking your flight tickets.
  • Food and money : Other than one or two shops, none of the eateries or stores accept card payments. There are two ATMs in Campbell Bay – Co-operative Bank and Syndicate Bank. However, there are no fixed schedules for when money is filled in them. It is, therefore, best for you to carry sufficient cash in hand for the duration of your stay.
  • I nternet and connectivity : BSNL is currently the sole service provider on the island. The connectivity is highly dependent on the weather. Network fluctuations are common and rains and stormy weather will affect the ease with which one can make calls. When it comes to the internet, there are some parts of the island that will allow 2G connections, sufficient to use WhatsApp. However, for browsing or emails, one can visit one of the three internet cafes that are situated in the market areas of Campbell Bay.

G2A Insider Tips

  • Choose the right network : The first and most important thing to keep in mind is the network. BSNL is the only service provider that works on the island. In the case that you are from a part of India other than Kolkata, it is best to get the sim card from your city. Residents of Kolkata can also purchase their sim cards from the  BSNL  head office in Port Blair.
  • Carry enough petty cash : Secondly, make sure to withdraw enough money in Port Blair and carry it to Great Nicobar because there are only two ATMs on the island, and do not get filled at regular times.
  • Be prepared for rain : Even in the driest months, there can be sudden bouts of heavy rain. Make sure to carry sufficient rain clothes and appropriate footwear that will protect you from the weather.
  • Stay safe from bites : Since Great Nicobar is a hot and humid area, mosquitoes thrive. It is therefore important to carry sufficient amounts of mosquito repellent or buy some at the local markets.

The tribal groups mostly keep to themselves, not interacting much with the mainstream populations. Some portions of the Nicobarese live in the urban area and are employed in a variety of government sectors. However, tourists are not allowed to interact with them. In order to interact with tribes who are not assimilated into mainstream society for research purposes, a Tribal Permit needs to be acquired from the Tribal Council.

With BSNL as the only service provider catering to the entirety of the Nicobar Islands population, there are several issues that are often faced. However, within the next year, the network is expected to improve with the laying of a submarine cable connecting Great Nicobar to Chennai.

The community of Great Nicobar is one that lives in peace and quiet. The people are extremely friendly and helpful, and do not let you feel like a visitor. Every day, shops remain closed from 12pm – 3pm for a lunch break.

The most common language spoken by the entire population is Hindi. Two other languages that are spoken by large populations on the island are Tamil and Bengali.

Within Campbell Bay, which is the main town, it is fairly easy to navigate from one place to another on foot. To reach other parts of the island, one can travel by bus or hire a vehicle.

Indian citizens require no prior permissions before coming to Great Nicobar. To visit Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve and Galathea National Park, visitors have to inform the District Forest Officer at the Forest Department located in Campbell Bay.

  • What is the food cuisine that is available? Everything from dosas and idlis to parathas and rotis are available in Campbell Bay. The other towns do have eateries, but are much smaller and usually need about an hour’s notice to prepare food. The shops are well-stocked with a variety of snacks and juices and are conveniently located. One can also enjoy drinking coconut water every day from the market area!
  • How safe is travelling to Great Nicobar? Travelling to Great Nicobar by ship or helicopter is very safe. These are both routes that are often traversed by government officials as well as researchers coming to the island for research.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

We’re a small crew of locals and Andaman-lovers helping you make the most of your trip to the Andamans.

You can build your holiday from the ground-up, exactly how you like. We’ve personally verified each experience, so you know that they’re tried, tested and true!

Travel Guide for Andaman and Nicobar Island First-Timers:

When is the best time to visit andaman & nicobar islands.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited at any time of the year, except during the rainy season. However, the most popular season for tourists is the winter season, which generally falls between November and February. If you are not bothered by the summer heat of India, you can also plan a trip during the months of March and April.

The islands are a popular tourist destination due to their picturesque beaches, scenic views, and serene environment. The archipelago is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and offers ample opportunities for water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

During the winter months, the weather is pleasant and conducive for outdoor activities. The temperature ranges between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, and the humidity is relatively low. This makes it an ideal time to explore the various beaches and indulge in water sports.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, it is recommended to plan your trip during the shoulder season, which falls between September and October or March and April. During this time, the weather is still pleasant, and the tourist inflow is comparatively lower.

On the other hand, the monsoon season , which falls between May and September, should be avoided as the islands receive heavy rainfall and strong winds during this period. The choppy seas and inclement weather make it difficult to indulge in water sports, and many tourist activities are suspended during this time.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the winter season. However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and are not bothered by the summer heat, you can plan your trip during the shoulder season. Whatever time you choose to visit, the islands are sure to leave you mesmerized with their natural beauty and tranquil environment.

More questions than answers about nicobar islands tourism.

  • Is it already valid or is it just a good intention and it will come to force later? When?
  • Are the islands be open to overnight or just for a day visit?
  • How can I travel to Nicobar islands?
  • Are there any accommodations, hotels, restaurants on Nicobar islands?

Wishing to answer those questions for our readers, we have packed our bags and headed for Nicobar Islands to find answers directly in the place.

Tribal permit

The Tribal permit is needed to visit all Nicobar islands , with the exception of urban and most of the eastern coast of the Great Nicobar Island. For Tribal permit you need to apply in Port Blair. If you are a foreigner, there is a very little chance you get a Tribal permit granted for the purpose of tourism. Do not even try. If you want to increase your chances, state different purpose, not tourism.

Forest department permit

Some areas are under the administration of the Forest Department and you need permits to visit those.  A valid Forest Department permit is needed to visit Galatea National Park and Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. Visit Forest Department office in Campbell Bay and apply for both. Permit for the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve you are likely to obtain there. However, Galatea National Park lies in a tribal area, therefore here both tribal and forest permits are needed. Forest department will most likely not grant you the permit if you did not obtain the tribal permit first. Still give it a try once you are there. Indian visitors have a bigger chance of scoring a permit than foreigners.

We traveled MV Campbell Bay. On the way from Port Blair to Campbell Bay, our ship had 3 stops and the journey took from Tuesday morning 10 a.m. till Wednesday late evening. Nicobar islands by helicopter

The idea of flying between South Andaman and Great Nicobar sounds fancy. Exchanging 2 days on a rocking boat for a few hours in a on RAF Dornier chopper, must be worth it. However, the chance of getting allocated a seat in a helicopter is small and the cost is pretty high.

Nicobar Islands Tourism

Avoid Bharat Seema if you can

Accommodation in the nicobar islands.

At the time of our visit (February 2019), there was no private accommodation, no homestay, no resort in Great Andaman Island. There are four state or municipal Guest Houses in Campbell Bay where you can theoretically stay.

APWD guesthouse Campbell Bay

APWD (Andaman Public Works Department) Guest House, with its air-conditioned room, may be the best place to stay in Campbell Bay. The advantage of APWD guesthouse is its lovely manicured garden and the fact that they cook meals for the guests. While on other Andaman islands APWD will cook for non guests as well, in Great Nicobar they were not willing to cook for non guests. Booking APWD guesthouse is kind of mysterious process, where you need someone to arrange it for you. Price is 1200 per double room.

ALHW guest houses Campbell Bay

ALHW (Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works) Guest House also has Air Conditioned rooms. However at the time of our visit, it was closed for reconstruction works.

Let us be realistic here. Both APWD and ALHW guest houses will only accommodate you if they have a vacancy and must be booked ahead. These guesthouses are intended for managers and visiting staff working for these government departments here. We tried to show up personally APWD guesthouses twice, in Mayabunder and Hut Bay and they were twice full.

IP&T Guesthouse Campbell Bay

Campbell Bay Panchayat (the municipality) runs two guesthouses. The IP&T Guesthouse  was originally run by tourism department as tourism guesthouse, however is now run by the municipality. IP&T Guesthouse provides 4 spacious air-conditioned rooms with attached toilet and hot water bathrooms , very adequate for a comfortable stay. As APWD is picky on guests, the IP&T Guesthouse is your best bet. Price is 400 Rs for Indian and 500 Rs for foreign visitor, per bed. IP&T is not cooking for guests and there is no service or reception. You get room key and you are left to your on devices.

Private hotels in Great Nicobar Island

With the "legalizing" the tourism here, private accommodation will be available soon. Mr. Anthony is building his "hotel and bar" already. Please check it out and let us know what it looks like. It occupies a prime location overlooking the central 0-th km roundabout in the town center.

Recommendation: Keep the outside gate closed at all time, otherwise cows will come into the guesthouse territory and bomb it with dung.

The Panchyat Guesthouse in Campbell Bay

If the IP&T will be full, you will end up in the fourth  guest house, also run by the Panchyat.   The Panchyat Guesthouse in Campbell Bay has Non-Ac private rooms with common toilets. It looks a bit like a prison. While this is the least liked option in town it still has two advantages. First, they cook food and second, they have a plenty of rooms and thus a good chance that you do no end up sleeping in the street.

The Great Nicobar, surprisingly, has handful of places to visit, so even if you have to wait one week for next ship back to Port Blair, there is something to do.

The southernmost point of India – the Indira Point

For many, this will be "the reason" to endure such a long journey. Southernmost tip of the Great Nicobar is also the southernmost point of India. There used to be a road to reach the Indira Point from Campbell Bay, however, the road was washed away by the Boxing Day tsunami. While the road is being reconstructed, you have 2 options to reach Indira Point. Via 25 km long trek from the last road point or by a fishing boat. Obviously, the boat is an easier option.

Tip: Do not take the boat all the way from Campbell Bay to Indra Point. Agree with the boatman instead to pick you up in Gandhi Nagar and reach the Gandhi Nagar by bus or car. This way you will save 2 hours out of the 3 hour boat journey to the southernmost point and lighthouse of India.

Unfortunately the Indra Point is currently within tribal territory and entry there is prohibited.

Beaches or garbeaches?

Great Nicobar Beaches may be the biggest disappointment of your trip. They are full of garbage and Nicobarese are not to blame. All the garbage you see washed away on the pristine shores comes from Indonesia and Thailand. It is extremely sad to witness this level of plastic pollution. I cried twice, realizing how did we screwed this planet and its oceans.

B-Quarry Beach

is beautiful and located just near Campbell Bay Bazaar. The coastal vegetation is majestic and there are a few beach huts to relax in. But beware! The currents are strong here and it is not advised to swim in the B-Quarry Beach. Plastic garbage is widespread. Bring a plastic bag and collect some. We picked some 20kg only. See more in the video.

Laxman Beach

Laxman beach is another beach within Campbell Bay town limit. This beautiful C-shaped beach can be reached by short 5 minute trek from town edge. The coastal vegetation along the short trek is again amazing. Local fisherman will be amazed to see you and may offer you a boat trip to small islet just off shore of the beach. Garbage story repeats here, unfortunately.

Many more beaches are reachable via the North – South road.

The 10th km beach and the turtle hatchery

I love this place as one of my dreams came true here. In one night we have observed the turtle nesting as well as seen newly hatched baby turtles . Moreover this is the only clean beach we have seen in Great Nicobar. I believe the forest department rangers are collecting the plastic garbage from the beach to make sure it does not distract nesting turtles. We recommend this place for swimming and sunbathing. To reach the 10th km beach, pass Joginder Nagar and turn left from the main road, roughly 2km after the village. Decent asphalted road leads all the way to the beach. If travelling by bus, ask the bus driver to drop you at the 10th km or better a the road leading to the hatchery.

Laxmi Nagar beach

Lovely, C-shaped Laxmi Nagar beach is also good for swimming. You will be alone at this beach and there will be no one in the 2 km radius. The area is farm land and revenue land, with locals mainly growing coconut trees here. There is firm gravel track turning left from the main north-south road, about 500 south of the Laxmi Nagar Village. Bus drivers know. It is a pleasant 2 km walk from the main road to the beach. Unfortunately, this beach was the most severely hit by plastic garbage of all beaches we have seen on the island.

Gandhi Nagar beach

We have spent a nice day at a beach some km or two north of the Gandhi Nagar village and its pier. The area is again a revenue land with coconut palms and a bit of agriculture. Not much plastic here and no strong waves or currents made it pleasant place for a swim and sunbath.

The Great Nicobar is pretty large island and there are beaches everywhere along the accessible eastern coast. Turn left anywhere from the main road and you will hit the coast soon. The Vijay Nagar beach is pretty far from the main road so we skipped it. The beach by Shastri Nagar looked very welcoming, however we did not have a spare time to spend there. Check it out and let us know how was it via comments below this article.

Nicobar Islands Tourism

Sail on Coral Queen whenever possible

Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve is in some sources also called Campbell Bay National Park. Small but exciting part of the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve is open for visitors. Inform the forest department in Campbell bay of your intention to visit and ask for permit. You will have to register and pay a small fee at the reserve’s gate.

Places to explore within the Campbell Bay National Park

There is surprisingly plenty of places to visit and see here. Early morning head to the " Bird Watching Point ". Here you can listen to the sound of nature waking up to the new day.  Wonderful view all the way to the ocean opens here in from of you.  Climb the Watchtower and enjoy an aerial view of the Great Nicobar island. Even swing is here, available for children to play. In the middle of the journey between park gate and the Watch Tower is "Nature Trail" head. The Nature Trail will take you thru the jungle to the Watch Tower. We advice you to let the forest department in Campbell Bay know, that you intend to trek the Nature Trail and ask them in specifically include it into your permit. If you are very, very lucky, you may encounter the Shompen tribe here.

The Fern Trail is probably the most amazing part of what is available for visitors to see. Enter the trail head and you will time travel to the Mezoic period . Rare species of fern trees, including the Sphaeropteris Nicobarica will surround you and the only thing missing here is the scream of Tyranosaurus Rex.

How to reach Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve

Multiple options are available to reach the reserve's entry gate. Cheapest would be to come by bus. The bust stop is only 800m from the gate and the walk is already so pretty here. The distance of of 8km from Campbell Bay makes it easily reachable by a tuk-tuk. Interestingly, local auto-rikshaw (tuk-tuk) are not used to ferry tourists arround. We paid 800 Rs for a return journey with one hour waiting and found this price a bit to high.

The place, where the Galathea River meets the sea, is the entry point to the Galathea National Park. This national park is one of the most important places globally for turtle nesting, especially for the giant leatherback turtles. As we learned fro ur forest department friends, during peak season there may be 12-15 leatherbacks nesting just nearby from the forest department camp.

How to reach Galathea National Park and how to arrange your trip to Galathea River

You can reach Galathea National Park by car or by a motorbike . Bus will only take you to the Shastri Nagar. With a bit of like you might hitch a ride on one of the road building trucks that roam the roads here frequently. We even spoke to a guy who walk the sea shores from Shastri Nagar to the forest checkpoint at national park border. It must be 7-8 km walk one way. Plan accordingly if you want to try.

Arrange your Galathea National Park visit

You may have a nice trip if you com here on your own, however, to actually enter the national park, you need to arrange your visit with forest department beforehand. The reason is simple. If you want to reach the Forest Dept. Camp located on the other side of the river there, you will need a boat.  Bring all the food and water with you.

Transport and getting around the Great Nicobar Island

Tuk-tuks, cars, busses and motorbikes exist in the Great Nicobar islands. Yep, they exist, but are they available for visitors?

Auto-rickshaws in the Great Nicobar Island

There are about 30 auto-rickshaws in Campbell bay, many of them have fixed arrangement, ferrying kids to and from schools and government official between their work and homes. The trip from the jetty down-town will cost 50 Rs, short trips within town go at 30-40 Rs. Tuk-tuks are practical and economical way of getting around the town, but there is many of them. You may spend a long time waiting for one to pass by, so it is wise to note down a phone number or two of the driver and get picked up when needed.

Buses in the Great Nicobar Island

A few buses ply the roads on the Great Nicobar Island. There are two routes. The north to south route bus goes from Campbell Bay via Joginder Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Gandhi Nagar all the way down to the southernmost village of India, the Shastri Nagar. There are 4 departures daily and the journey takes 1.5 hours. Second route is short Campbell Bay to Govind Nagar trip, practical for visiting the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve.

Renting a car, bicycle or motorbike in the Great Nicobar Island

As there is no tourism infrastructure, there is no official car or motorbike rent. However, if you ask around, someone will be willing to rent you his bike or take you o a day trip in a car.

Is there electricity, mobile signal and internet on the Nicobar Islands?

Indeed it is. All of those modern world things are available in Campbell Bay.  Most of the inhabited areas of Great Nicobar have electricity supply 24/7 and BSNL Mobile signal for communication. BSNL 3G Internet is available here and there is even a Cyber Cafe in Campbell Bay. Expect poor speed and patchy connection. In the first half of the 2020, the internet was barely adequate for checking email or text messages. Good news is that the undersea optical cable has already reached Campbell Bay and the place will offer world class internet before the Covid-19 pandemic is over and you are able to visit this friendly island.

Food and restaurants in the Great Nicobar Island

There is only one restaurant with bakery and we noted 2 small eateries around Campbell Bay. APWD, Panchyat guesthouses will cook meals three times a day for their guests. However outsider are not served in APWD. In the evening one or two small eateries serve hot samosas around the zero kilometer roundabout.

Suruchi restaurant

Clean, family run, Suruchi restaurant is the only "restaurant" on the island and we must admit they cook great food. Suruchi is open from early morning time till late evening, serving tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Both Indian and continental dishes are available here and to our pleasure, they were both willing and able to prepare tasty Indian dishes without their hot and spicy ingredients. I had the best paneer masala here in the whole India here. They also bake lovely sweets in Suruchi .

Mr. Sima eatery

The small eatery run by friendly Mr. Sima just in front of the IP&T Guesthouse. Honestly the place looks like those places I would never enter for having a food. Dark inside shack with walls from corrugated iron sheets. Cows graze the nearby land plot and cow dung is everywhere, mixed with roaming cats and dogs. You need to cross stinky open waste canal that flows just in front of the Mr. Sima's eatery. 2 crabs live under the channel bridge. However, Sima is a skillful cook and his place is full during morning noon and dinner times. It is easy to fill the place. There is just one table with 6-8 people sitting capacity. Only Indian food is served by Mr. Soma. We ate there our breakfasts almost every day and were fine, digestion wise.

Food and prices in the Nicobar Islands

While Campbell Bay only boost the population of 5-6000 inhabitants, the geopolitical importance of Great Andaman island for India is tremendous. Island is supplied regularly by boats from Port Blair. MRP, the maximum retail price, is observed here as anywhere in India, Thus packaged goods are sold at the same price as in the mainland, which is great. However. Local businesses that need to adhere to MRP in this remote place make litle to no profit on selling MRP regulated goods, thus stock are low and the place often runs out of supplies. Such a ubuquitos thing like your Coke or Sprite may not be available At the time of our visit the bottled water was not available at all. We needed to fill our bottles with filtered water every morning.

Sea Sickness

Me and my wife, we suffer from motion sickness easily and we can honestly say, that sailing in Andamans was quite bad, but we survived.  The 2 days journey will however test your abilities , thus take motion sickness pills from home country or buy them in India.   When the ship begins to swing, assume horizontal position quickly. If you do feel sick, please remember there is a doctor aboard every ship and he (or she) will help you.

Nicobar Islands Tourism Tips:

  • I would really suggest anyone heading south to Nicobar islands, to stop for a few days on a  Little Andaman . That place is fantastic and it is quite well connected with the outside world. There is  daily sailing from the Port Blair to Hut Bay . See our Little Andaman Guide here.
  • Take 2 liter water bottles from Port Blair. Currently selling of the water bottled in plastic is forbidden aboard the ship. Thus the only water you can drink is the one you bring with you or the filtered water. While staying in the plastic free Great Nicobar Island, those bottle will come handy again.

5 Days in Andaman and Nicobar Islands: How and What to do

Ross Island, Andaman and Nicobar

Home » India » 5 Days in Andaman and Nicobar Islands: How and What to do

This article has been authored by Chhandasi Ganguly.

Want a vacation offering both peace and thrill along with being a treat to your senses? Andaman and Nicobar Islands with its magnificent beaches, opulent natural beauty, exciting watersports, historical significance, and delectable food is the place for you.

1) HOW TO REACH Air travel is the easiest way to reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Flights to the Veer Savarkar Airport of Port Blair are available from numerous major cities.

A longer journey of 3-4 days (one-way) by ship is another option. There are three or four sailings from Kolkata and Chennai and one from Vizag every month.

Great Nicobar, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

2) WHEN TO VISIT Winters, that is October to March, is the best time to visit as the climate is relatively pleasant. Summer months are very humid. While the islands scintillate with lush beauty during and right after monsoons, the season is accompanied by high tidal waves, heavy downpour, and strong winds forbidding watersports.

Havelock Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

3) ESTIMATED EXPENDITURE

*The above costs are estimated per day

Additionally, you can expect an average expenditure of ₹12,000 on sightseeing, transport, watersports, and other knick-knacks in five days. A single scuba dive can cost around ₹4,000. The more activities you engage in, the more you will spend.

4) SAMPLE ITINERARY While most of us would like a long vacation, our busy lives don’t allow us the luxury. Five days is not enough to squeeze in every tourist spot, but you can certainly visit the popular ones. Here is a sample itinerary to help plan your getaway:

Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

DAY 1 Arrive at Port Blair and dedicate this day to visiting the main attractions of the city.

a) Anthropological Museum: Six indigenous tribes inhabit the islands and maintain very little contact with outsiders till date. Thus, the Anthropological Museum is one of the few avenues providing a glimpse into their life through their tools, weapons, photographs, clothes, model habitats, art, and handicrafts. An adjoining souvenir shop sells journals, books, and other items related to the tribes.

Timings: 09:00–13:00 & 13:30–16:30 (except Monday and national holidays)

Corbyns Cove Beach, Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

b) Corbyn’s Cove Beach: This unspoilt beach with its white shimmering sand, beautiful coconut palms and clear seawater is perfect to enjoy a relaxing time. Alongside, you can try jet-skiing and speed-boating. Tour the beach to spot bunkers built by the Japanese Army during World War II and take a motorboat to Snake Island for its deadly snakes, colourful corals, and immense aquatic life.

Cellular Jail, Port Blair

c) Kala Pani (Cellular Jail): It serves as a dark reminiscence of the British colonial rule in India. Separated from the mainland by water, it was one of the most dreaded prisons. Today, it is a National Memorial. A light and sound show on the history of the jail and India’s freedom struggle takes place in the evening.

Cellular Jail timings: 09:00–12:30 & 13:30–17:00 (except Monday and national holidays) Light and sound show timings: 18:00 & 19:15 (second shows on Monday, Wednesday and Friday are in English; others are in Hindi)

If you start early, you can include a few other spots like Samudrika Marine Museum, Forest Museum and Chatham Saw Mill. Be informed that most of these close between 16:00–17:00 and plan accordingly.

DAY 2 You will go on a cruise to dive into the history of the place and engage in plenty of water activities.

Ross Island, Andaman and Nicobar

a) Ross Island: Tourists flock here for the relics of British-era buildings. You will find interwoven man-caves across Ross that were constructed to facilitate the escape of important British officers during an attack. For the ones willing to spend long hours, it hosts a light and sound show depicting how everything on the island was planned and constructed and the hard life of Indian inmates at that time. Apart from the historical sights, the island has a sanctuary full of deer and peacocks.

North Bay Island, Andaman and Nicobar

b) North Bay Island: Along with the splendour of natural beauty, North Bay Island is the destination for water sports. Besides jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkelling, sea walking is a must for adventure-seekers willing to explore varieties of reefs and fish up close. If going underwater is not for you, you can opt for a glass-bottom boat tour to look at the marine world from above without stepping into it.

DAY 3 Take a ferry to Havelock Island in the morning. The journey takes about 2.5 hours. Spend your day chilling on beaches, taking strolls, and bathing in the sea.

RadhaNagar-Beach

a) Radhanagar Beach: Known as one of the best beaches in Asia, Radhanagar Beach with its turquoise blue water and white sandy shore is ideal to relax. It is another good option for scuba diving and snorkelling amidst marine life. You can walk the shores and take a quick dive in the beautiful clear water. Also, the beach is famous for its sunsets, after which you won’t be allowed to stay.

b) Elephant Beach: It is only 2 km away from Radhanagar Beach. Trekking from Radhanagar is the best way to reach here. This beach with pristine blue water is visited by very few people and you can simply dive in on your own to witness corals and fish.

Watch Karl Rock’s vlog to get a visual idea of what to expect in Havelock.

DAY 4 Water babies can pay a quick visit to yet another beach before returning to Port Blair.

a) Kalapathar Beach: It is a small beach at the tip of Havelock—relatively less crowded with a peaceful ambience. The panoramic view of the sunrise here is a sight to behold accompanied by the lively waves hitting the shore and the cool breeze tingling your body.

After coming back to Port Blair, you can either take the day to rest, explore small attractions in the city, or engage in retail therapy at Sagarika Emporium.

b) Sagarika Emporium: Run by the Andaman Government, it is the best place to buy souvenirs and gifts at reasonable prices. It has a wide variety of arts and handicrafts for sale developed by self-employed locals. The specialities include items made out of sea-shells, coconut shells, bamboo, and wood.

DAY 5 Be prepared for a very early start on your last day with vehicles leaving as early as 03:00 because protected areas have to be passed in convoys (06:00, 09:00, 12:30, or 14:30). The first convoy is usually the most preferred.

Baratang Island

a) Baratang Island: You will spend your time bird-watching amidst mangrove creeks. Limestone Caves with stalactites and stalagmites is the most sought after attraction here. Also, you can spot Mud Volcanoes—a recent natural phenomenon, forming small and large volcano-shaped mud cones. To reach Baratang, you can travel via government or private buses or hire a private cab up to Jirkatang, whereon you travel via boats. You can also go via Government ferries but they don’t return the same day. Therefore, it is not a viable option if you are visiting Baratang on the last day.

5) FOR THE TASTEBUDS You need enough energy to keep you going from one place to another, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a paradise for seafood lovers. The staple diet includes rice, coconut, spices, and a range of seafood. Dishes with lobsters, prawns, and crabs are very popular. You can also try Red Snapper and Squid Fry. If you are a vegetarian, fret not. You can easily find vegetarian options at any food joint. Also, if you do not want to venture out of your usual cuisines, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has plenty of places offering food items from all over India.

Campbell Bay, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

6) FEMALE SOLO TRAVEL The islands are usually safe for female travellers. Since tourism is the primary source of income there, locals play a huge role in ensuring safety and the authorities are strict with regulations. Also, you can dress in swimwear without raising eyebrows. In case you require assistance, the official women helpline number is 181.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

7) TRAVELLING WITH KIDS Andaman and Nicobar Islands is undoubtedly suitable for travelling with your little ones. They will enjoy the pleasant environment and the opportunity to frolic in the waters.

However, for sea-walking and scuba-diving, kids have to be above 7 and 10 years of age respectively. Yet, they will be examined by the instructors for feasibility. Also, the trip to Baratang Island, with its early start and long travel, can be hectic for young children.

Doesn’t matter if you are a nature-admirer, thrill-seeker, peace-lover, history-buff, photo-fanatic, or a foodie, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has something for everyone. You will probably come back with a desire to return for more.

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets

Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ

Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.

When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.

Approx cost of flight per person from major cities

Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.

The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore

Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation

Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.

The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island

Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

At Havelock Island  Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

Likewise at Neil Island.

The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be

Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands

Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands

Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000

The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000

Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights  + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000

Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below

Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other

Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.

Ferry to havelock from Port Blair

The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :

Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean

Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online.  Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online

So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.

Step 6 - Cost of water activities

Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :

Andaman water sports seawalk

Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.

So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving  for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.

Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary

In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :

Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure

Cabs in Andaman

The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.

So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost

Step 8 - Food Cost

The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner

Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc

Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

Step 9 - Conclusion

Now, while you got to know what is the break up of the tour and you should plan your trip to Andaman Islands. The above same steps has to be followed whether you are visiting Andaman Islands from any part of India.

20 Reasons Why you Must Visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands

A travel guide to ensure a fun trip…

A Travel Guide to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.png

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the most beautiful places in the Maritime Southeast Asia . The summer heat is scorching hot but the fall seems to be a great time to visit. From the moment you land on Port Blair, all you will see is the blue ocean and the azure sky.

Here are 20 reasons you should visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands this fall:

1. Weather and Ambience

It is mostly sunny and occasionally drizzles. The weather could be called the “Goldilocks” weather as you will never need a blanket at night or an air conditioner during the day. Andaman is a life-changing experience filled with beauty in little things starting from shell-collecting to watching the diverse flora and fauna of the ocean while snorkelling.

2. You Never Run Out of Things to Do

You can lay on the beach as the rhythm of the waves soothes or you could give yourself an adrenaline rush by trying out the several adventure sports there. The adventure sports range from parasailing and snorkeling to sea walking and scuba diving. If you’re not a fan of dangerous thrill and prefer chilling out, you can visit one of the numerous beaches and just lay there or walk around for hours on end without feeling bored at all.

3. Adventure Sports

Other places don’t seem to match up to the level of Andaman when ‘adrenaline junkie’ is your middle name. You can go parasailing at speeds of 40-70 mph against the strong winds or you could walk on the sea bed, strolling around fishes and turtles or you could go kayaking amongst the mangroves, get on a banana boat or the clichéd but classic, jet skiing in the ocean.

4. Scuba Diving

Scuba diving as an adventure sport is highly recommended. The trainers will train you properly before you go for your dive, like learning how to communicate under water. You will be taken amongst the coral reefs and you’ll see organisms of every possible color in the spectrum – creatures you have only seen on National Geographic. After coming out of the water, I guarantee you’ll have a tough time coming back to reality.

5. Visit to Elephant Island

An amazing place to go with your family or a gang of friends, who finally made it to the trip, is the Elephant Island. It is one of the few islands that allows swimming, with supervision of the lifeguards,  of course. It also harbours activities like snorkelling, sea walking and speed boating.

Traveller’s tips:

  • Carry a fresh towel and a swimsuit to this island.
  • Carry some snacks as there are very few food stalls there.

6. Raadhanagar Beach

This is one of the most astounding beaches you will see in your lifetime. It is the cleanest beach in Asia and if you go during sunrise or sunset, you will see many hues in the sky and ocean. The waves are so high that you can try to jump over them. There are several food stalls nearby, so be sure to have some of the local snacks.

Don’t go too far into the ocean as the receding waves are pretty strong.

7. North Bay & Neil Island

2 favourite tourist hotspots which not only have adventure sports but also good places to shop at everywhere are the North Bay & Neil Island.  Beautiful sun dresses, bikinis and swimsuits as cheap as 200 INR can be bought, so goodbye Vero Moda!

8. Baratang Island

Batarang Island holds several surprises, one of which is the Limestone caves. You will have to go through a salt water stream on a boat with mangroves on both sides of you. Once you reach the cave, you will see crystalline, luminescent limestones all around you shining like emeralds and rubies.

9. Havelock Island

Possibly one of the most famous islands of the several hundred islands of Andaman. You can stay in one of the cottage hotels with different rooms for separate parts of your travel gang. Havelock is famous for its flora and fauna, and you get to go for scuba diving too, and the seafood at Havelock is mouth-watering.

Make sure you carry a book or a magazine because there is no signal and no Wi-Fi.

havelock-338536_1920

The food at Andaman is not what you’d expect. It is not predominantly seafood, there is more to it. Since Andaman is a place of several cultures, all kinds of food are available starting from Bengali preparation of fish and the South Indian Dosato Rajasthan’s Dal Bati Churma to Kashmiri tea. However, the mussels and squid are to die for and seafood lovers will find solace in Andaman.

 11.  Jarawa Tribes

The Jarawas are an aboriginal tribe and one of the very few that exist on the face of this earth. The Jarawas still do not know the current modern civilization and reside in South and Middle Andaman where, if you go for a trip, you will be amazed to see how the Jarawas live – by hunting and gathering primitive forms of clothing., It will amaze you to see a part of history in front of you.

Do not try to interact with Jarawas if and when you see them; they will react aggressively.

12. Journey to the Jarawas

About 350-400 cars line up in a convoy to go and see the Jarawas in the jungle, in their natural habitat. The journey usually starts early morning and ends by late evening. When you spot a Jarawa, you’re not supposed to react or stop the cars or take pictures.

  • Do not try to take a picture of the Jarawas. It is a punishable offence and risks the loss of the tribe as it exists.
  • The journey is usually 9-12 hours, starting from 3 AM, so be sure to carry a few magazines and books.

13. The Cellular Jail Tour

Get a local guide to explain to you what the cellular jail signifies. The cellular jail is a great part of Indian history as the British constructed the jail in Andaman so that prisoners, who were freedom fighters, could not escape as there is water surrounding Andaman in all directions. The gallows, nearly 500 cells and the salt chamber is a site that will make tears roll down your cheeks.

14. The Cellular Jail Light Show

If you have the privilege to visit the cellular jail in the evening, you should definitely get tickets for this show. It is narrated by the late Om Puri as he narrates the experiences of the prisoners throughout the struggle for independence, the sacrifice and the torture that went on before independence. It will send shivers down your spine to experience this live.

Traveller’s tip:

Don’t try to record the experience. Just focus and listen.

15. Trekking

One wouldn’t associate trekking with Andaman but there is a lush green forest called Madhuvan, where you get to walk through bridges and see wildlife all around you.

Be sure to carry a back-pack with medicine, snacks, mosquito repellant and lots of water.

16. glass boating.

If you’re one who loves to experience the marine world, you should definitely go for glass boating. It is a boat with a glass floor and you can see the fish, corals and other creatures as you move through the water. It is a one-of-a-kind experience where you are travelling with the members of the ocean.

17.  Bird Watching

Bird watching seems like a thing that doesn’t really happen much anymore and is a nerdy habit but Andaman is a hub of diversity, and with that, come beautiful birds, starting from kingfisher to cormorants, song birds and the majestic Megapode bird, after which many hotels are named. If you’re an early-riser, go through the grasslands and the beaches and see these amazing creatures roaming about.

18. Little Things you Could Do All the Time!

Go for a casual stroll by the shore, simply watch the sunset with your loved one or curl up on a hammock and read that book you have been longing to at the banks of the never-ending ocean. Lather up your sunscreen and go swimming or ditch the sun tan bottle and lie like a lobster all day. You can go shell collecting and you might even get lucky and find the prettiest ones there are. Many tourists find pearl oysters too! Indulge in activities like shell ornament and jewellery designing if it interests you at the North Bay and Havelock Island.

19. Dolphin Watching

Did I mention you never run out of things to do? You can go cruising on a journey near the trenches where dolphins move in packs and if you get lucky, you can stop and pet them too. Dolphin watching is one of the most fun-filled activities you could do there.

 20.  Swimming with Elephants

On Elephant Island and Havelock Island, you get to meet the friendly elephant, Rajan who is 60+ and still young. You could even go swimming with him as he loves his regular splashes. But since he’s a celebrity, you’ll have to book an appointment in advance. This again depends on whether you like the idea of indulging in such an activity or think of it otherwise. We leave this to your discretion.

Best time to visit is October! Pack up and go girl!

Add it to your bucket list and share it on your blog. Thank me later. 😉

Hey! Most of my acquaintances were scared about the dive since they had a fear of water or salty water in their eyes or sharks and what not.
