The gourmet break with Hubert Giblet*

Today I am bringing you an article with a lot of nerve. Yes, it takes a lot of nerve to include burgers in a series of articles on gastronomy… And Benoît Sanchez from the Tatoué Toqué has a lot of nerve, too. He opened his restaurant in January 2021, at a time when restaurants could not even serve customers at the dining table. Of course, the dishes were well adapted to take away service, and customers were soon hurrying to enjoy them. It is hardly surprising, because Benoît’s burgers are divine!

A wonderful, crazy chef

Benoît Sanchez, world burger champion with the Team Burger France. One of his two retsaurants in Tours: Le Tatoué Toqué, Loire Valley.

Le Tatoué Toqué – Benoît Sanchez

Benoît Sanchez may specialise in burgers  but of course he is still a “real” chef! True, he has swapped his chef’s hat for a baseball cap, more in line with his image, with his tattoos and biker/rock ‘n’ roll look. But Benoît Sanchez is in fact a traditionally trained cook. He won his spurs in the best restaurants in London, Madrid and Haute-Savoie. He is also a  member of the Académie Nationale de Cuisine .

By choosing to specialise in the deliciously filled bread rolls, he has followed all the foundations of gastronomy: finding the right recipes,  selecting local suppliers, using fresh ingredients , buns made in house, painstaking cooking and serving… And his work has won many awards: 3 French burger cups, the first prize at the Burgers Toqués contest, the title of world vice-champion for burgers in 2022 and lastly  world burger champion in 2023   at the World Food Championships in Dallas ! Want to taste?

Le Tatoué Toqué – Benoît Sanchez, world burger champion 2023.

Le Tatoué Toqué, in the old town of Tours.

The “Hambourgeau”, a shop window for local gastronomy

The Touraine-style burger is to die for! Along with the high-quality beefburger itself, cooked just as you like it, there is a shallot puree with (house!) honey mustard, Touraine Tomme cheese, rillons – Touraine-style cracklings – deglazed with raspberry vinegar and rocket. Delicious!!!

In Tours, the Hambourgeau, a burger made with Loire Valley specialities! Benoit Sanchez, world burger Champion for the team France.

The Hambourgeau, a burger made with Touraine specialities!

The lobster burger, supremely refined

A burger made from lobster! That’s right, with  blue lobster from Brittany , nice and fresh, since it is delivered each morning from a partner fishmonger!!! Lightly seared with house lobster oil, a house lemon mayonnaise, baby spinach, radish pickles, mini sprouts of dill and coriander (from  Géo Pousse Tout , for local connoisseurs). Don’t miss out on this indescribable taste experience. To be on the safe side, order ahead of time, because the burger series are limited.

Let’s hope that the Tatoué Toqué can soon open up fully. It is a real restaurant (also serving  salads and delicious desserts ), with great wine and beer lists, as well as  a small fine-food section with very high quality products  (spices by  Terre Exotique , honey made with the  Rucher de la Dame Blanche …)

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ernie Els won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career PGA Tour Champions victory, closing with a 7-under 65 at Wakonda Club to beat defending champion Stephen Ames by two strokes.

Tied with Rod Pampling for the second-round lead, Els eagled the par-5 15th and had five birdies in his bogey-free final round. The 54-year-old Hall of Famer from South Africa finished at 21-under 195 for his first victory since March 2023 .

“It’s very special,” Els said. “You know, I haven’t won for a while. I’ve had quite a few chances, but it gets tougher when you don’t get it over the line. So today was very, very competitive. A lot of players, a lot of great players. I just took my chance when it came.”

Ames shot 66. He leads the tour with two victories this season.

Bernard Langer tied for third at 17 under after a 68. Making his fourth start since returning from an Achilles injury, the 66-year-old German star is the tour’s career victory leader with 46.

Pampling (69) and David Duval (67) also were 17 under.

Big Mac battle: McDonald's loses European Union trademark fight with Irish rival Supermac's

FILE- A McDonald's Quarter Pounder, left, and Double Quarter Pound burger is shown with fresh beef in Atlanta, March 6, 2018. A top European Union court ruled that McDonalds has lost its Big Mac trademark in the 27-nation bloc, ruling in favor of Irish fast food rival Supermacs in a longrunning legal battle. The EU General Courts ruling said in its judgement Wednesday, June 5, 2024, that the U.S. fast food giant failed to prove that it was genuinely using the Big Mac name over a five-year period for chicken sandwiches, poultry products or restaurants. (AP Photo/Mike Stewart, File)

LONDON – McDonald's lost a European Union trademark dispute over the Big Mac name after a top European Union court sided Wednesday with Irish fast food rival Supermac’s in a long-running legal battle.

The EU General Court said in its judgment that the U.S. fast food giant failed to prove that it was genuinely using the Big Mac label over a five-year period for chicken sandwiches, poultry products or restaurants.

Recommended Videos

The Big Mac is a hamburger made of two beef patties, cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles and Big Mac sauce. It was invented in 1968 by a Pennsylvania franchisee who thought the company needed a sandwich that appealed to adults.

The decision is about more than burger names. It opens the door for Galway-based Supermac's expansion into other EU countries. The dispute erupted when Supermac's applied to register its company name in the EU as it drew up expansion plans. McDonald's objected, saying consumers would be confused because it already trademarked the Big Mac name.

Supermac's filed a 2017 request with the EU's Intellectual Property Office to revoke McDonald's Big Mac trademark registration, saying the U.S. company couldn't prove that it had used the name for certain categories that aren't specifically related to the burger over five years. That's the window of time in Europe that a trademark has to be used before it can be taken away.

After the regulator partially approved Supermac's request, McDonald's appealed to the EU court.

“McDonald’s has not proved that the contested mark has been put to genuine use" in connection with chicken sandwiches, food made from poultry products or operating restaurants and drive-throughs and preparing take-out food, the court said, according to a press summary of its decision.

Supermac's portrayed the decision as a David and Goliath-style victory. Managing Director Pat McDonagh accused McDonald’s of “trademark bullying to stifle competition."

“This is a significant ruling that takes a common-sense approach to the use of trademarks by large multi-nationals. It represents a significant victory for small businesses throughout the world," McDonagh said in a statement.

The Irish company doesn't sell a sandwich called the Big Mac but does have one called the Mighty Mac with the same ingredients.

McDonald’s was unfazed by the ruling, which can be appealed to the European Court of Justice, the bloc’s highest court, but only on points of law.

“The decision by the EU General Court does not affect our right to use the ‘BIG MAC’ trademark,” the company said in a press statement. “Our iconic Big Mac is loved by customers all across Europe, and we’re excited to continue to proudly serve local communities, as we have done for decades.”

Champion Boxer Andrew Tham Dead at 28 In Motorcycle Crash

Andrew tham, a boxer and featherweight champion, died june 2, three days after a motorcycle crash in scotland. he was 28..

The boxing community is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Andrew Tham died June 2, three days after a motorcycle accident in Cumbernauld, Scotland, his management company confirmed. He was 28.

"On behalf of the Tham family, St Andrew's Sporting Club are devastated to confirm the tragic passing of Andy Tham," the organization wrote on X , formerly known as Twitter, June 4. "Andy was a champion in the ring, and a character out of the ring. It has been an honor to have him in our stable for the entirety of his professional boxing career and he will be greatly missed by us all."

The boxer, who began his professional boxing career in 2018 and earned a featherweight championship title in September, sustained critical injuries after colliding with a Hyundai Tucson 6:50 p.m. on May 30. He was taken to a hospital nearby, where he later died, Police Scotland  shared in a press release .

The British Boxing Board of Control—the governing body of professional boxing in the United Kingdom—also expressed its condolences on X, writing on June 4 that they "send their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Andrew Tham, following his tragic passing."

Fellow boxer George Stewart, who recently faced off against Tham, told BBC he was "absolutely devastated."

"It was an absolute honor and a pleasure to share the ring with him two weeks ago - a true warrior," he noted. "I have no words to describe this devastating news other than heart breaking."

Tham's death is just the latest tragedy the British boxing community has experienced in the past few months. Boxer Sherif Lawal , 29, died last month after collapsing in the ring during his professional debut, his management company confirmed.

"Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he was later pronounced dead," Warren Boxing Management said in a statement at the time, adding that the organization "would like to send our condolences to all of Sherif's family, friends, coaches and all those close to him at this tragic time."

2024 Memorial Tournament odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the memorial tournament 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising golf picks.

collin-morikawa.jpg

There have been eight first-time winners on the PGA Tour this season, but one shouldn't necessarily expect there to be a ninth at the 2024 Memorial Tournament. That's because none of those previous eight have come at the six signature events that have already taken place. Familiar names like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama have been signature tournament winners this year, as those boast the strongest of fields. Nine of the top 10 ranked players in the world will tee off at the Memorial Tournament 2024 when play begins on Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Scheffler has four wins this season and is the +360 favorite according to the 2024 Memorial Tournament odds. With two wins over his last four starts, McIlroy is at +800, with PGA champion Xander Schauffele rounding out the top three choices at +900. Tommy Fleetwood has the shortest odds (+3500) amongst anyone who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but the Englishman does have 10 victories worldwide. Before making any 2024 Memorial Tournament picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000. And at the 2024 PGA Championship, the model correctly called Xander Schauffele's first major victory heading into the weekend.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 Memorial Tournament field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Memorial Tournament predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Memorial Tournament 2024: Collin Morikawa, who was two strokes off the lead heading into the final round before withdrawing last year, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top five. Morikawa has gone winless in his first 13 tournaments in 2024 after picking up just one win in 25 events last year. He continues to make the cut and contend in most of his appearances, but he has been unable to get across the finish line.

In fact, he has not finished better than T-3 (Masters) this season, and he missed the cut in the Memorial Tournament two years ago. He ranks outside the top 115 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting and driving distance, while also ranking 105th in greens in regulation percentage. The model does not like his chance of breaking his winless drought this week, even though he is among the 2024 Memorial Tournament favorites at +1400.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a +2500 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

In order to score well at Muirfield Village, players will need to be extremely accurate with their irons. Thomas enters this week's event ranked seventh in strokes gained: approach to green (0.697). He's also been effective off the tee, ranking 22nd in driving distance (308.1) and 38th in total driving (132). His ability to constantly put himself in advantageous positions has the 31-year-old ranked seventh in birdie average (4.43) and 17th in scoring average (69.57).  Those impressive stats, plus his long odds, make him a strong value pick for your 2024 Memorial Tournament bets.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 Memorial Tournament picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Memorial Tournament, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Memorial Tournament 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Memorial Tournament leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship.

3 North Bar & Grill

8369 HWY 2 North • Acton, MT • 406.208.0770

When you find yourself in Billings, consider driving a few extra miles to neighboring Acton for this small-town fine dining establishment. With several mouthwatering burgers on the menu, we've decided the best burger here is the one you order. For those who love spicy food, the Stuffed Jalapeño Popper Burger is an obvious choice. It is layered with a ⅓ lb. Certified Angus Beef patty, melted pepper jack, bacon, stuffed jalapenos, cream cheese and 3 North sauce, then sprinkled with jalapeño crisps. Get a side of onion rings and add in a finely mixed cocktail to complete your evening.

American Legion Post 28 – Glendive

105 N Merrill Ave •  Glendive, MT • 406.377.5317

Ahhhh-tention! This burger commands respect – as does the warrior who can handle a hand-pattied, ⅓ lb. burger with the works, plus a fried egg, slathered with peanut butter. Yup, it’s a protein bomb on a bun. We want YOU to try the Legionnaire in Glendive. Mission accomplished.

Big Game Casino Tavern & Steakhouse

11 S Main St. • Baker, MT • 406.778.2050

You'll find this burger in their menu under the "Hamburger Heaven" section, and once you bite into the Frisco Burger it'll make sense. What's incredible about this burger is the light, crisp sourdough bread, attentively raised and baked in-house. Though lightweight, the toasted sourdough works well to hold together the ⅓ lb. smash-style patty, garnished with bacon, American and Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind burger, add this one to your list!

Blue Cat Bar & Grill

139 Northern Ave. • Huntley, MT • 406.348.2400

The Big Ass Blue Cat Burger is exactly what it sounds like—a monstrous number that brings the heat. It's loaded with diced jalapeños, topped with bacon and pepper jack cheese over a freshly ground ½ lb. patty. If you stop for a burger over the weekend, make sure to ask about their wildly popular Loaded Bloody Mary.

BULL MOUNTAIN GRILLE

2376 Main St. • Suite 818 • Billings, MT • 406.254.2855

Located in Billings Heights, you'll discover a spirited Western vibe establishment named after the owners’ stomping grounds: Bull Mountain Grille. As you peruse the extensive burger offerings, one standout steals the spotlight. Behold The Bunkhouse Burger —a tempting choice featuring succulent smoked brisket atop a juicy beef patty, crowned with your selection of not one, but two delectable cheeses. It's a flavor-packed masterpiece that'll have you hankering for more with every savory bite. Make sure to try their house-made sauces to dip fries or onion rings, the chipotle ranch will make you wish they bottled it for purchase.

The Burger Dive

114 N 27th St. • Billings, MT • 406.281.8292

The Burger Dive is much more than the local’s favorite burger joint, this place is home to multiple World Food Champion burgers. In fact, it’s the holy grail for any burger aficionado. The I’m Your Huckleberry Burger is arguably the finest burger you’ll find in Montana, toting the 2016 World Food Champion title. This burger is a tremendous ⅓ lb. patty, covered with a cascading layer of homemade huckleberry-hatch chile barbeque sauce, bacon, creamy goat cheese, roasted red pepper mayo and fresh arugula. All that goodness is presented on a soft, locally sourced Grains of Montana bun. Be sure to save room for one of their imaginative classic milkshakes made with local Wilcoxson’s ice cream. It’s a real treat!

BW Grill & Bar

304 Elliot St. • Hysham, MT • 406.342.5705

If you are craving a classic burger, this joint won't let you down. The namesake, BW Burger is served with all the essentials on a ⅓ lb. patty, sourced locally from Cowboy Meats. The patty is drizzled in their house-made concoction called BW sauce. We'd be remiss not to mention their popular tater tots, or gems as they're often called out here. Remember to bring a marker with you to add your very own John Hancock to their graffiti board in back.

1 South Main St. • Baker, MT • 406.778.3278

You can find another classic burger on the menu at the Corner Bar. The components of their Cheeseburger are simple; it's a typical ⅓ lb. patty with a slice of melted American cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion and tomato. The plate is rounded off with crispy fat French fries on the side. Supposedly they have the coldest beer in town, the only way to test their claim is to try it for yourself. We heard they have a pizza burger, part pizza part burger that comes in clutch when you're undecided between ordering a pizza and a burger.

Custer Battlefield Trading Post & Café

347 US-212 • Crow Agency, MT • 406.638.2270

After touring Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, continue your experience in the heart of Crow Country at Custer Battlefield Trading Post & Café—or as the locals call it "Putt's." Order the Buffalo Burger , made with 100% buffalo meat, grilled and plated with all the classic toppings. The sweet potato waffle fries are the real treat and we'd be happy to return just for them. Be sure to browse through their collection of Native American made goods in the attached trading post or sit back and admire the interior of the café, decorated with a colorful mixture of beadwork and native art. If you find yourself in for another visit, they're locally known best for their authentic Indian fry bread which serves as a base for their immense and tasty Indian taco.

Diamond X Beer Co.

5417 Hawk Creek Ave • Billings, MT • 406.534.4922

Ever since this brewery opened, they've added one masterpiece after another to their menu. The newest creation is the French Onion Burger that quite literally stacks up to the competition. It is a ½ lb. Certified Angus Beef patty heaped with onion rings, caramelized onion, garlic aioli, Swiss and havarti cheeses. It's plated with an au jus dipping bowl and thick-cut parmesan fries. You'll leave with the satisfying feeling of overindulgence, and we can't wait to see what they create for our next visit.

9 Main St. • Roundup, MT • 406.323.3104

If you ever find yourself in the friendly cowboy town of Roundup, pull up a stool at The Grand and sit next to the local cattlemen and ranchers for some chow. The Diego is a classic burger with a kick, customized with peppers and pepper jack cheese, loaded with fresh lettuce, onion and pickles. The accompanying brew fries are plenty good, too. One thing is for sure, you will not leave this establishment hungry. When you come back for more, try your best at the real menu centerpiece, aptly named the Big Ass Enchilada. We dare you to finish it.

Heiser's Bar

9 S Main St. • Baker, MT • 406.778.2001

In this historic downtown saloon, they take great care with every detail of their burger. Each features a giant hand-crafted ⅓ lb. burger patty served on a locally-made Grains of Montana bun. If you have a craving for something juicy and spicy, the Sriracha Bacon Pepperjack Burger will knock your socks off with its homemade sriracha sauce. Each burger is plated with all the fixings and more fries than you probably have room for. There are two other burger locations on either side of Heiser's in case you plan to hop around or go back to Baker for another bite.

Homestead Inn

16551 Iowa Ave. • Broadview, MT • 406.667.2315

Don't let the unadorned exterior deter your mission because this place will surprise you. The Mexi Burger looks nothing like a burger, but we promise it'll be one of the best things you'll try. It is served on open faced buns with a ¼ lb. patty, buried in a homemade green chili (a secret recipe of the owner), sprinkled with tomato and cheese. You're going to need a fork and plenty of napkins.

The Joseph Café

147 N Ninth St • Forsyth, MT • 406.346.8667

The owner honors Forsyth’s railroad history by naming their menu items with railroad lingo. The Broken Knuckle Burger is a fresh 6 oz. patty topped with crisp bacon, sourced locally from Cowboy Meats, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo, served on a brioche bun so divine you’ll wonder why every burger isn’t served this way. If you manage to save room for dessert (and you must), ask for the weekly homemade special. You won’t be sorry.

June's Bungalow

153 Hwy 59 North • Miles City , MT • 406.234.9977

June may have moved from the original blue bungalow, but her menu still features the unexpected. We recommend you try the Mango Burger , featuring a healthy helping of homemade mango salsa, guacamole and Havarti cheese. These unique flavors pair together well on a giant patty, with juices oozing out on all sides as you take your first bite. Ask for June’s special fizzy tea—it’s a local fav.

Powder River Lanes

112 E Holt St •  Broadus, MT • 406.436.2760

Strike it big in Broadus with the Mother Of All Burgers—the MOAB . Powder River Lanes sought to create a top-of-the-line burger that outdoes all the ones who came before it. The MOAB features a ⅓ lb. patty, assembled between thick sliced Texas toast and filled with grilled onions, jalapeños and smothered in nacho cheese.

Roy Rodgers Bar Grill & Casino

205 Spring St. • Terry, MT • 406.635.9913

It would be easy to drive past Terry on Interstate 94, but you'd be missing out. This small town is known for the majestic namesake badlands that span its backdrop. Across the street from the historic Kempton Hotel, you'll find this freshly renovated steakhouse that holds a touch of saloon-era nostalgia. It's your classic cowboy hangout, so you'd expect a likewise rough and tumble burger. Instead, they plate up an impeccable Fried Green Tomato & Bacon Burger that is eloquently drizzled with balsamic glaze. The attention to detail is obvious in this dish. Do yourself a favor and order the sweet potato fries as your side. You can thank us later.

Sid's East Side Bar & Grill

1701 E Main St. • Laurel, MT • 406.628.8946

Sid's East Side is a staple establishment in Laurel and has been for the past 50 years. They proudly serve their food from scratch, that's what makes The Doc Holliday a phenomenal burger. Their homemade huckleberry chipotle barbeque sauce is like nothing you've ever tried before. To complement the barbeque sauce the burger features applewood smoked bacon and pepper jack cheese. If you're craving something juicy and wonderful, you've come to the right place.

Six Gun Pizza

2100 Cedar St. • Forsyth, MT • 406.346.1444

Arriving at a modest building, this eatery transformed from a mechanic shop to a restaurant when its retired construction owner grew weary of idleness. Recognizing a need for pizza in the community, he decided to venture into the culinary world. What began as a humble pizza joint with a back-door takeout service has evolved into a dining destination on the outskirts of Forsyth. With the introduction of their Smash Burger , this establishment now boasts a variety of best-selling dishes on its menu. Choose between a ¼ or ½ lb. beef patty sandwiched between homemade buns, and you'll find yourself exclaiming "YUM" with every bite. Their rendition of the smash burger features Pepperjack or American cheese, grilled onions, and their signature secret sauce.

106 N 28th St. • Billings, MT • 406.534.8702

This fine dining establishment in downtown Billings touts its own World Food Championship title. Named for the local zoo, the championed ZooM Burger is sure to leave you with the lingering flavor of perfection. Its patty is smothered with blackberry roasted jalapeño sauce, espresso rub, goat cheese, fried green tomatoes, cheddar cheese and a drizzle of honey. If this isn't one of the best burgers you will ever eat in your life, the truffle fries may just steal the show.

Tilt Würks Brewhouse

420 Pacific Ave • Miles City, MT • 406.874.8458

If you are a lover of “all things hot,” you’ll hit the jackpot with the Spicy Buckin’ Bronco Burger at Tilt Würks Brewhouse. Start with ½-pound Angus burger and then go full tilt with Cajun spices, fresh jalapeño rings, smoke bacon, Cajun onion straws, ghost pepper cheese, topped with spicy slaw and drizzled with a jalapeño aioli. With all that bouncing around, you’ll need to ping a few games before you head home. This sandwich is more than worth the play.

Tubb's Pub

612 Main St. • Miles City, MT • 406.234.5809

Tubb's is a friendly sports bar attached to the historic Montana Bar in Miles City, combining Old West charm with modern service. They are well-known for their remarkably crafted burgers, but if you're looking for a challenge, go with the Stuffed Burger . It is comprised of two handmade ¼ lb. Certified Angus patties, each famously stuffed with your choice of cheeses and stuffers, served on a brioche bun with beer battered French fries. Cowboy-up and ask your server about their ultimate stuffed burger challenge.

Vaqueros Restaurant

109 N Wibaux St. • Wibaux, MT • 406.795.8913

Vaqueros is known for serving food with Mexican flavor and impeccably fresh ingredients. The Wibaux Burger is loaded with bacon, roasted peppers, homemade fried onion rings filled with fresh authentic guacamole. The best part is, it's served on toasted bun branded with the iconic Wibaux Longhorn. It doesn't get any more cowboy than a branded burger!

Vintage & Rustics in Montana

813 Main St. • Miles City, • 406.234.7878

This may be one of the most unique stops you can make on the burger trail because it’s not just a restaurant, it’s like a mini Wall Drug right in downtown Miles City. Vintage & Rustics takes up five original storefronts along Main Street. Alongside the antique booths and home goods, the storefront doubles as a retro diner filled with colorful vintage counters and booths, taking you right back to the 1950s. The Bleu’s Burger is composed of American Kobe-style beef that is complemented with strawberry jam and creamy bleu cheese sauce, topped with crunchy onions, all on a fresh-baked roll. Plan to spend time after your meal to browse through this expansive shop, walking off this authentic goodness.

Wagon Wheel Café

211 Main St. • Ekalaka • 406.775.6639

This mom-and-pop restaurant is the friendly type of place where you pass around sections from the local weekly newspaper between tables. The name of this burger speaks for itself, Ekalaka's Favorite Cowboy Burger . This ¼ lb. patty is paired with substantial crispy onion rings, thick-cut bacon, jalapeños, Swiss cheese, drenched in locally made honey barbecue chipotle sauce. Favorably, the bun is sturdy enough to capture all the sauce without getting soggy part way through.

Memorial honoree Juli Inkster excelled as the mother of all LPGA Tour competitors | Oller

burger tours champion

Memorial Tournament honoree Juli Inkster sees what men on the PGA Tour go through when their significant others are pregnant . Stressing over what having kids might do to their careers. Worrying if the baby’s arrival means having to withdraw from a tournament. Complaining about rising for early tee times after getting only three hours of sleep.

Inkster observes it all – the wondering, whining and whimpering – and here is her takeaway: Cry me a river.

You want stress? You want sleep deprivation? You want career risk? Try being the one who births the baby , then takes only six weeks off before teeing it up again on the LPGA Tour. Try winning tournaments as a mother , you poor Mr. Professional Golfer. Then we can talk.

“The wives are actually having the kids and having to take six or seven months off. Guys take the week off and come back as heroes because their wife had to give birth,” Inkster said last week before traveling to Muirfield Village Golf Club, where she will be celebrated Wednesday as one of two player honorees. (Tom Weiskopf is being honored posthumously.)

Inkster, a queen of sarcasm, is not taking shots at male golfers so much as wanting everyone to know how hard it was, and is, for LPGA players to juggle motherhood and life on tour. So hard, in fact, that the 63-year-old Californian who won 31 tour events, including seven major championships, said that successfully balancing the roles of super mom and championship golfer is the crown jewel of her 29-year-career.

“Winning the U.S. Open would be my No. 1 highlight,” she said. “It’s our national championship. Winning three U.S. Amateurs in a row (1980-82) is pretty good. Solheim Cup captain three times. Awesome. Winning the Bobby Jones Award is pretty impressive. But my most impressive (accomplishment) is traveling the tour with two kids and winning tournaments.”

Inkster’s incredible career – she is the only woman to win two majors in each of three different decades and one of only seven to have completed the LPGA grand slam – reminds me of the line about Ginger Rogers being able to do everything her dance partner, Fred Astaire did. Except she did it backwards and in high heels.

“When I had kids, we didn’t have maternity leave and day care,” Inkster said. “So six weeks after I had Hayley (in 1990) I was out playing. It was hard adjusting from being a single person to all the sudden having a kid and bringing all the stuff with you to every tournament, with a 6-week-old, and breastfeeding, and we didn’t have videos and GPS and a lot of the stuff that gets you from A to B.”

Inkster didn’t play her best golf when her kids were little; second daughter Cori was born in 1994.

“I was trying to figure it out,” she said.

Juli Inkster won more as a mother than before having kids

Eventually she did, winning five times in 1999, including two majors, and qualifying into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“When I kinda figured it out my game got back going. I won more tournaments being a mom than not being a mom,” she said.

That’s not to suggest Inkster was a great golfer because she was a mom. But motherhood did not slow her down, as if that were even possible. Growing up with two older brothers in Santa Cruz, California, Inkster learned quickly “how to hold my own.”

“I enjoyed the competition, which is why I love match play,” she said. "Mano a mano."

Apparently so. Her 6-1-2 record in the Solheim Cup underscores her ability to stare down opponents and come out on top. A grinder, she claims she was never the best ball striker, putter or chipper.

“But I could grind for 72 holes. I was going to get that ball in the hole,” she said.

And if you tried to get in her way? Put it this way: Inkster could rip out your heart on the golf course, then give you hers when the round was over.

Former Ohio State golfer Cathy Gerring got to know Inkster when the two were young mothers on tour in the early 1990s. Gerring’s husband, Jim, was the head pro at Muirfield Village from 1984 to 1998, and Inkster would sometimes stay with the Gerrings when traveling from the East to West coasts.

“She was the best friend ever,” Gerring said. “Our lives took different paths, but to this day if I called Jules and asked, ‘Can you help me out?’ She would do anything for me.”

Showing compassion to a friend in need

When Gerring suffered serious burns over her face and arms in an accident involving a liquid burner at an LPGA tournament in Nashville in 1992, Inkster was the first player to visit the hospital.

“I had layers and layers of skin burned off my hands and face,” Gerring said. “My mom and Juli were there and she said it looked like my head was a basketball with two slits in it for eyes.”

The wisecracking Inkster then proceeded to call Gerring every day – for two years – to make sure her friend was healing.

“It’s amazing what she has been able to accomplish,” Gerring said. “To be as successful as she was at golf? To juggle all that and still have time for others? She’s a great person and role model.”

Inkster returns this week to Muirfield, where she is a member of the captains club. It is her favorite course in the world.

“Because of the history I have with it,” she said, estimating she has played the golf course more than 20 times.

Inkster still enjoys playing golf, but retired from competition she is able to reflect on what mattered most to her. And what she would like to be remembered for.

“When you’re going through all that, golf is your identity,” she said of grinding on tour. “It took me a while to know golf is what I did, not who I am. Being a mom really helped me with that.”

Mothers must be both tender and tough. Inkster nailed the landing on both counts.

“She just refused to lose,” Gerring said. “I never saw a better competitor. She and Jack (Nicklaus) were similar that way. It’s what separated them from everyone else. When Jack would step on that tee, not only did he know he was going to beat you, but he knew you knew he was going to beat you. Same thing with Jules.

“Yet if you asked her, she would give every single trophy to be a mom. Her kids are it to her.”

Fortunately, Inkster need not choose between trophies and children. She raised both equally well.
