Here’s some facts about Aylesbury Prison

HMYOI Aylesbury is a Young Offenders Institute in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, northwest of London. It has the capacity to holds 444 young male inmates.

Aylesbury opened in 1847 as a county gaol, but was changed in 1890 to a women’s prison. In 1959, the prison converted to a male prison, then in 1989, the prison converted to a YOI. Aylesbury holds the longest sentenced young offenders.

The residential section is built of A to E wings and G wing holding mainstream prisoners, and an F wing holding vulnerable prisoners in an “enabling environment”.

In the report of an unannounced inspection in June 2015, it was stated on many occasions that the safety and purposeful activity was inadequate, and did not live up to the “healthy prisons” standard.

On basic level, visiting hours are between 15:00 and 16:15 every day. On standard or enhanced level, the hours are from 14:15 to 16:15.

Jade Braithwaite was held in HMYOI Aylesbury after the murder of 16 year old Ben Kinsella for a minimum of 19 years.

It’s often called the ‘UK’s toughest youth prison’. Around one in five inmates are doing life for murder.

There has been a prison or gaol in Aylesbury since 1810.

Prison Phone offers phone tariffs that reduce the costs of calls from this prison by up to 75%! This enables prisoners to get the support and love that they are missing from home, while reducing costs for the inmate. Find out more below.

Many prisons are now resuming Social Visits. Please check with the prison.

Each prison is tackling the problem in the way they think best. During this time you can still write letters or use the Email a Prisoner service.
