ECO EXPERIENCE CAMP

Stunning beaches and the beautiful Sea of Cortez meet on the shore of Espiritu Santo, which is delightfully pristine and off-the-grid despite being only 18 miles north of La Paz. Tim Means, the founder of Baja Expeditions, saved this island from commercial exploitation by raising the funds to buy the island from the developers and arranging for its donation to the people of Mexico as a national park.

Mango Wind Boat

It’s easy to fall in love with sailing. Especially when you raise the sails and feel them fill with wind as the yacht accelerates and then totally quiet with just the hiss of the water going past. It is equipped with kayaks, paddle boards, snorkelling and scuba gear. It’s your adventure and it’s our job to make it happen.

Off the GRID Expeditions, best know for their extreme multi day - multi mile UTV tours, has grown into one of the most critically acclaimed tour operators in Baja. Perhaps best known for their off the beaten path- aka (off the grid)- fast passed adventures and luxurious destinations, you simply just can’t find this in a tour book. This company is as real as it gets!

First class tier one tour operators guide you every mile while certified mechanics and paramedics bring up the tail end of the pack. Fully outfitted Ford Chase trucks are in constant communication with MSAT satellite radios and are completely stocked with parts, tools, trailers and ice cold beverages. The crew call themselves the Baja Pirates, but don’t be fooled -these are true professionals and their passion for operating the premier off road tour business in Baja really shows.

The average tour is 3 to 4 days and over 600 miles. Some 8 day tours go beyond the 1700 mile range. The terrain changes day to day or even hour to hour as you wind your way back   and forth down the Baja peninsula. Even with the adrenaline pumping, off-road driving, we still plan time to stop and enjoy the remote hidden treasures of what only years of exploring Baja shows. Crossing the peninsula from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez almost a dozen times, we really get to experience this truly majestic land and the people. It’s no surprise this company is loved by the locals. If you are the off road adventurous type and are      looking for a trip that will leave you with stories for 10 life times then this is it. The adventure white knuckle driving, the camaraderie, the destinations and the crew aka Baja Pirates that will truly let you “explore beyond your limits” is what makes this the ultimate Off Road adventure package.

We Do Baja Best Baja Motorcycle and UTV Tours Since 1997

What sets us apart, our philosophy.

Guiding riders since 1997, traveling with a light footprint on the Baja peninsula and safety have always been our top priorities.

We achieve this with smaller, well matched groups using Tim's "no dust speed" passing ranchos and homes with clean laundry hanging and kids waving from their schoolyards begging you to pop wheelies for them!

YES! There's plenty of space to shift up and roost Baja like you came to do, we'll definitely get your heart pounding.

On your journey, you might witness some of the local outreach Baja Bound is known for.

Tim Morton, our owner and guide, was inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in October of 2021.

His love of Baja California, vast local knowledge, and flawless logistics  are what makes Baja Bound tour rides the premier riding vacation.

Each of Tim's rides is custom tailored for every skill level to enjoy.

Tim is well known for his Baja racing career as a factory rider for

Team Honda, BMW, and Kawasaki.

Although he holds 4 SCORE-International Pro Motorcycle Points Championships, among other titles, he's most proud of his 100% finishing rate with his arrive and race program building top quality race bikes and supporting racers from all over the globe.

Dakar Pros to desert racing Novices have all achieved their racing dreams under Tim's guidance.

The Perfect Match

We never mix Novices with Pros or Experts with Beginners!

If you're not sure where you fit in, just ask. We'll gladly steer you to the group that best fits your ability and adventure vacation goals.

Or, round up your riding buddies for your own private trip.

Don't worry about riding over your head to keep up or getting bored on easy roads all day when you came to roost.

Tim chooses routes based on the skill level of every group and each ride is different. You'll be conquering Baja with riders of similar ability on terrain you'll enjoy and at a pace to keep you challenged yet safe.

Our Location

Situated in between a Unesco World Heritage site, a National Marine Preserve, and the largest Desert Preserve in Latin America, we have a truly one-of-a-kind Baja adventure tours location.

Our ecolodges are a 14 mile boat-in only journey from the nearest town, Bahia de los Angeles (Bay of the Angels). Our views here are pure untouched nature – vastly different from the typical Cabo and La Paz “Baja Experience” with tourist resorts, crowds, and noise.

baja adventure tours

We use our pangas for just about everything from fishing to wake boarding and inner tubing! The opportunities for time spent on the water are never ending! You’ll love the comfort and speed of our pangas as you’re zipped out to the nearby islands in search of large game fish, to dive in the surreal blue waters, or when viewing the areas wildlife. An assortment of single and tandem open and expedition class sea kayaks are ideal for paddling, wildlife viewing, exploring hidden coves, and discovering romantic secluded white sand beaches.

baja adventure tours

Food is a key element to any Baja Adventure Tours travel experience. In our case, the source of a good deal of positive feedback from our clients. We use only the freshest local ingredients when we prepare top quality meals for our guests. Whenever possible our staff and guests harvest seafood from the ocean by fishing and snorkeling. Fresh from the sea, Baja Spirit’s team creates cuisine that would make any chef envious. Meals are well balanced and servings ample. We can also accommodate special vegetarian or vegan diets.

Baja Spirit Timeline

1971 – now, 1970’s.

On these trips, he started looking for remote point breaks for surfing. He developed a talent for landing his planes on beaches and dirt roads, and would bring camping gear to surf.

Kevin befriended the local fishermen, who’d bring fresh fish and lobster, and their wives would cook meals for Kevin and his guests.

adventure tours

1980’s

“”Word of mouth quickly spread the news about these unique Baja adventure tours, and Kevin came to know every hidden gem on the Baja Peninsula.

But there was always one location that was unlike any other, just a short boat ride from Bahia de Las Animas on the Sea of Cortez.

Kevin realized there was no one else doing this. This was before “Baja adventure tours” really existed. Inspired by the feeling of changing people’s lives by bringing them down to have magical and safe remote nature experiences, Kevin made the decision to take a leap and find a way to bring more groups down to the peninsula.

Our Baja Ecotourism Tour company was formed with the name “Baja AirVentures”.

baja adventure tours

1990’s

2000’s.

After a decade of significant growth for our Baja adventure tours and ecolodges that began our Baja Whale Shark EcoTours . Countless memorable trips were taken with unreal bioluminescence in the water, an aurora borealis sighting, fin whales, dolphins, and our neighbor sea lions. More locals were employed and supported, and ultimately we built the Ecolodges, which made for a more accessible, peaceful, and comfortable experience.

baja adventure tours

A big year for Baja Spirit. The opportunity came to purchase parcels of land in Bahia de las Animas, and we developed the first permanent housing that became the Baja Spirit Ecolodges .

Every piece of our 9 yurts and decks and the central lodge with all its facilities, came on trips with small boats called Pangas, 12 miles (25 kilometers) one way from Bahia de Los Angeles to the Baja Spirit Ecolodges.

2010’s

A decade that served amazing trips to thousands of guests, one small group at a time. 2019 was the best year yet, with more groups and guests coming down than ever before with our team of guides

We were even chosed by the prestigious Young Presidents Organization (YPO) to run their annual family trip, which was a big success.

baja adventure tours

The global pandemic causes us to shut down operations for nearly 2 years, halting Baja adventure tours and Ecolodge vacations.

We open back up with a new name (formerly Baja AirVentures), to keep showing people the magic and Spirit of Baja. Smaller scale and rebuilding from the pandemic, but with more passion than ever, we are still here.

adventure tours

34+ years later, Baja Spirit is still here, sharing one of the most beautiful places in the world with people like you. A large part of our clientele continues to be repeat guests and referrals, and the fulfillment of sharing this part of the world with newcomers is what keeps us going.

With many people from many different backgrounds joining us, every group still shares one thing in common: the awe, wonder, and true amazement of the beauty of this location. We’d love to have you on one of our trips this year.

Baja Vacations

If you love exotic locales filled with nature and wildlife, then you have found the right place. The Baja peninsula is one of the most diverse geographical areas of the world and stretches across millions of acres of protected biosphere reserves and sanctuaries. Every year over 97% of the planet’s gray whales, plus thousands of humpback and blue whales, migrate to Baja. John Steinbeck called it “ferocious with life” for its playful sea lions, leaping mobula rays and acrobatic dolphin pods.

Forests of giant cacti cover the coastal cliffs serving as crucial breeding grounds for thousands of seabirds and a thriving array of desert flora and fauna. On the east side is the Sea of Cortez. The “world’s aquarium,” nutrient-dense waters are calm and home to more than 900 fish species and one-third of the planet’s marine mammals. On the west is the Pacific coast, known for its peaceful lagoons like Bahía Magdalena where gray whales make their annual visit to give birth.

What Adventuresmith Travelers Say About Their Trips To Baja California

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter. Everything was wonderful!

Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

Accommodations Review

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Crew & Guides Review

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

  • Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

We did the Loreto to La Paz cruise aboard the Westward in December 2018 - January 2019, with a 2-day rock art trip before the cruise. It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. A local resident in Loreto recommended the ship. Everything was wonderful!

[I most enjoyed the] rock art: the great mural site is gorgeous, both the hike to it and the images. Swimming with whale sharks: we had an unusually good experience, the sharks are really impressive; snorkeling over schools of sardines and colorful fish; some gorgeous hikes. We did a number of hikes, three or four kayak trips, and three snorkel excursions (fish watching; swim with young sea lions; swim with whale sharks in the La Paz harbor). Hike lengths were up to about 2 miles, on good trails. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter.

The boat has snorkel gear and shorty wet suits (with shoulders; if you buy your own, shoulders help keep you warm). You typically spend 2 to 4 hours off the ship during a day; the Westward has an excellent library of several hundred books (field guides, natural history, history, adventure, travel, fiction) covering Baja, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (if you like to read, you'll find lots to choose from).

Staterooms on the Westward are comfortable; choice does not matter much (we spent little time in them except for sleeping or resting). The enclosed fantail is a great place to watch the scenery. The mid-ship parlor is also very comfortable.

Meals Review

Tracie does an excellent job accommodating dietary needs (we had one pescatarian; most dinners had fish appetizer or soup and main course), but needs details in advance.  Portions are moderate and satisfying (not huge). Excellent use of fresh produce and fish. We tend to eat much more simply; I enjoyed the fine cuisine, but my wife would have preferred a simpler cuisine.

Traveler Advice

There is no wi-fi availability for almost the entire trip, so be prepared to enjoy not being connected! We liked the north-to-south trip, as highlights of the trip (swim with sea lions and whale sharks) came at the end.

Captain Bill is warm, friendly, interesting, and does everything he can to ensure that passengers have a great experience. Chef Tracie is a talented cook, with many years of experience (some in outstanding restaurants), who prepares excellent food, including 3-course dinners, nicely presented, with wine pairings. Our naturalist guide Carlos was born and raised in La Paz, speaks excellent English, and knows the fauna and flora very well. He was exceptionally helpful to my wife, who is less mobile than were the other guests. He also prepared a video with highlights of still photos and videos, distributed to guests as we left. Carlos is exceptionally knowledgeable, good humored, helpful. The thumb drive he gave us has a really wonderful selection of photos and videos (he uses an underwater go-pro, so there are great videos of schools of fish, seal lions, whale sharks).

Our trip on the Westward was wonderful! Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels. Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

Though rooms are very small on the boat, which was to be expected, they are comfortable. The boat wasn't completely finished when we boarded it, so there were a few items missing in the staterooms (i.e. mirrors in the cabins, hooks to hang anything on, door jambs, etc.)

There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Chef Tracie is a magician in the kitchen!  Her meals were incredible --tasty, creative, healthy and filling. It was always so much fun to see what she prepared. It was also fun to watch her work in the kitchen, whipping up cuisine with influences from all over the globe. She also made great use of the fresh fish, scallops and clams that our naturalist guide Carlos secured for her.  Mealtimes were delightful! Tracie also goes out of her way to make sure that passengers' dietary needs are adhered to, so no worries if you are gluten free, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, etc.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The material provided ahead of time was ample and we particularly appreciated the suggested book list. We did not know, however, that the boat wasn't fully completed until we got on it. We would have appreciated knowing this information prior to our trip.

Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). We truly enjoyed his company.

Captain Bill is a very experienced seaman who always puts safety first. We felt very secure with him at the helm. He is incredibly personable and a great storyteller, and adds so much to the experience. Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family.

The engineer and carpenter, Randy, was also an integral crew member, who added much to the overall experience. He is a very kind man and incredibly skillful at his work, who also possesses a great sense of humor with many stories to tell. We were in awe of the work he did on the ship, while we were onboard.

Follow the guidelines provided in regards to items and clothing to bring, as the list is very thorough. Although there is hiking, heavy hiking boots are not necessary. A pair of gym shoes is fine. Reading some of the books suggested is helpful to provide you with some knowledge of the area prior to your trip. Don't over pack, as you can wash your clothes in your sink and hang them dry up on deck.

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

  • Baja California's Whales & Sealife
  • Safari Endeavour

This trip was exactly as advertised – among the great whales, so close you could literally touch them. The ship and food were excellent with a superb, very attentive staff.

The room onboard was small but very comfortable.

We really enjoyed the local and organic produce, fresh pastries, and great wine list.

AdventureSmith did a great job, we felt very prepared heading into the trip. We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

marielmatze

I would emphatically recommend this to anyone– above nearly anything else you do. We saw beautiful fish, coral, birds, and yes, sea lions. It depends on their mood how much contact you get but in all cases a unique and very special experience that’s well worth the trip and the price… They’ve thought out every last detail of your experience so new things come at just the right speed to be comfy with just enough relaxation to appreciate them.

A group of 6 of us from LA were treated like family and felt super safe. Our group had a mixture of beginners and ocean veterans and they made sure all of us had fun on our own levels… We went on a boat and saw dolphins, turtles, and swam with sea lions. It was all so dreamy. Then we broke from lunch on a private beach where they made us lunch with fresh fish.

Awesome experience, best thing ever. Service was outstanding. We had a great time with friends, whale watching is one of the most beautiful experiences we’ve ever had.

Day 2: San Diego to Ensenada, Mexico- 250Km

In the words of Officer Antonio, " Welcome to Mexico. " As originally noted in Eric's 2008 blog post , these simple words marked the beginning of a journey filled with open arms, friendly faces, and breathtaking scenery.

While today's route, as the crow flies, is not exceptionally long, we'll add some extra riding due to the border crossing into beautiful Mexico. Our adventure commences, leading us through Tijuana or Tecate, and into the picturesque northern Baja wine country before arriving in Ensenada.

What Awaits You:

  • Flavorful Feasts: Brace yourself for the best fresh fish tacos, ceviche, tequila, and ice-cold cervezas you've ever had. The tantalizing flavors are so close you can practically taste them in the ocean breeze as we journey down the stunning Pacific Coast.

Day 3: Ensenada to Catavina - 410Km

As we journey southward, we'll uncover opportunities to veer off the well-ridden path along the Pacific Coast, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the border towns. Our route will lead us into the enchanting, lesser-explored realm of the Baja Peninsula.

Prepare to be transported into a surreal landscape as we enter the otherworldly Valle de los Cirios, a place reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss book come to life. Here, you'll encounter colossal cacti and volcanic boulder formations that resemble whimsical, fictional characters, igniting your imagination.

Then to Catavina, a place that scarcely registers on the map, serves as the perfect overnight oasis within the vast desert. Step outside in the late evening, and if the moonlight allows, behold a breathtaking, star-studded night sky that will leave you in awe.

Day 4: Catavina to Bahia de Los Angeles - 302Km

Fear not, as we bid farewell to Catavina, the captivating array of Cirio, Cardon, Cholla, Pitaya, Cochal, and Senita Cacti continues to grace our journey. We'll traverse the peninsula on our way to the next destination, a hidden gem that only a fortunate few have the privilege of discovering.

Bahia de los Angeles awaits, a secluded fishing village nestled along the pristine shores of the Sea of Cortez. Here, you'll leave behind the modern conveniences of cell coverage and ATMs, but in their absence, you'll find compensation in the tranquil escape it offers from the rest of the world. With its calm turquoise waters and sun-kissed, sandy beaches, Bahia de Los Angeles provides the perfect haven for a blissful retreat.

Day 5 - Bahia de Los Angeles to San Ignacio-340Km

For those intrepid souls ready to conquer the long, sandy roads, a hidden treasure awaits: the northernmost stone Spanish mission, situated in the heart of a remote, seemingly desolate landscape. Once a thriving mission center during the late 1700s, this place has transformed into a ghost town, bearing silent witness to a bygone era.

Our journey continues through the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve , Mexico's largest wildlife refuge. Here, you may have the chance to spot an array of creatures, from rodents and hares to the elusive California Pronghorn and Desert Bighorn Sheep.

This leg of the adventure offers a mix of the finest dirt roads suited for big adventure bikes and some well-paved stretches.

Our final destination is the charming oasis town of San Ignacio, where you can look forward to a delightful evening with delectable cuisine and refreshing drinks.

Day 6: San Ignacio to Loreto-274Km

As we look forward to a day of coastal riding, you'll find yourself winding along pristine white sand beaches, with the cerulean waters of the Sea of Cortez embracing each twist and turn. Today promises a riding experience like no other.

Our journey takes us through the town of Heroica Mulegé, a place rich in history and offering great lunch spots. Just beyond, prepare to be awestruck as you ride along the Bay of Conception , a place of beauty that defies adequate description – the kind of beauty only a true poet could capture in words, and we'll refrain from attempting it here.

Today's destination is Loreto, a town nestled within one of the nation's few National Marine Parks. Tomorrow, you'll have a well-deserved rest day, offering you the freedom to relax on the beach, try your hand at fishing, enjoy a round of golf, or set out for another exhilarating ride. The choice is entirely yours.

Day 7: Rest Day in Loreto (Riding Optional)

Embrace a day of leisure in the lively coastal town of Loreto. Whether you choose to saddle up for a coastal ride, plan a day trip to Coronado Island and Loreto Bay National Marine Park, or simply unwind, the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

For the adventurous spirits, there's the opportunity to swim with sea lions, keep a keen eye out for dolphins, and bask in the beauty of Loreto's white sandy beaches on a half-day excursion. If you're here between January and April, consider embarking on a full-day whale-watching adventure, a truly unforgettable experience.

(We schedule these Baja trips from mid-January through March, the peak season for whale watching, so don't miss out on this remarkable opportunity.)

Day 8: Loreto to La Paz-374Km

Get ready for more Baja fun as we set out on a day filled with open desert routes and charming, pint-sized villages. The morning ride brings you pristine paved twisties, leading to a significant highlight: the San Javier Mission, a historic gem nestled amidst the rugged terrain.

From there, we venture onward to an exhilarating, long stretch of dirt roads and light sand, heading further south. Rest assured, there's a fully-paved alternative for those who prefer it. A few hours later, you'll find yourself once more beside the glistening blue waters, as we arrive in the lively coastal city of La Paz. Here, you'll have a wealth of picturesque settings and fantastic dining options to choose from as you explore the town.

Day 9: La Paz to San Jose del Cabo-228Km

Our journey takes us south from La Paz, where a brief visit to the mining history museum at El Triunfo offers insights into the region's rich heritage. You'll then find yourself immersed in more exhilarating, twisty roads and breathtaking coastal vistas.

As you make your way down to Los Barriles, another wonderful lunch spot awaits. Here, riders have the option to complete the journey on well-paved roads, or for those seeking an extra dose of adventure, there's the opportunity for some playful riding through not-too-deep sand along the Cabo Pulmo area.

The route leading to San Jose del Cabo is adorned with opulent mansions and beach resorts, teeming with surfers and beach enthusiasts. Finally, we arrive in San Jose del Cabo, another vibrant town that serves as the perfect destination to conclude our exhilarating motorcycle trip.

Day 10: Departures or An Extended Vacation

Is it time to say goodbye already? Many of us choose to extend our stay, perhaps by inviting a loved one to join and relish the sunny beaches, activities, dining, and shopping that Los Cabos offers. But if your journey with us must come to an end, do so with a contented smile, for you've undeniably conquered Baja, and you're taking back with you a treasure trove of photos and tales to regale your riding buddies who "missed out."

We sincerely appreciate your decision to journey with us and hope you'll return to embark on your next thrilling moto adventure. Safe travels, and until we meet again on the open road!

Desert, Sea and Diving

14 days / 13 nights You Drive Tour

Pick up the Jeep at the International Airport and lodging.

Traveling north, you will ascend into the earth of the Sierra de La Giganta, to contemplate the mission of San Javier, a true architectural jewel, built by Jesuits in 1699. In the magical light of the sunset you will arrive to Loreto, the first capital of Californias, today a fast growing development.

Day 3: Isla Coronado.

You will circumnavigate Isla Coronado, an unbelievable habitat of Sea Lions, Brown Pelicans and Boobies. After landing on its beautiful white sandy beach, to explore the island and relax, you will return to Loreto.

Day 4: Loreto – Santa Rosalia. 122 miles.

You will parallel the enchanting Bahìa Concepción and its marvelous lace of white, sandy coves. Then you will visit Mulegé and its severe mission, on a river surrounded by thousands of palm trees and finally, you will drive to Santa Rosalìa, whose vestiges of a rich mining past will bring you back into time, while you will stroll in the picturesque streets of the old French colony.

Day 5: Santa Rosalía – San Ignacio. 132 miles.

After crossing the volcanic area of Las Virgenes and passing through part of the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, you will travel deeply into the Sierra de San Francisco. Volcanic in origin, the sierra hides an incomparable cultural and natural wealth: from small cactaceous with colorful flowers, to gigantic cacti and primitive cirios, the most unusual plant of the peninsula and unique in the world. A primitive tribe of hunters and collectors, the origin of whom is unknown, existed in this wild environment thousands of years ago. They shaped in caves and ravines countless rupestrian paintings, representing gigantic human figures, hunting scenarios, families and animals. All these figures make one of the largest concentration of prehistoric art in the world. After having visited one of the caves, you will rest at San Ignacio, one of the largest oasis of Baja.

Day 6: San Ignacio - Bahìa Magdalena. 257 miles.

Between the treacherous mirages of the immense Tide Flats, you will cross the Laguna on your way to the splendid bay of San Juanico, the green orchards of La Purìsima, the agriculture fields of Ciudad Constituciòn, up to Puerto San Carlos, on the edge of the immense sand dunes of Bahía Magdalena.

Day 7: Bahía Magdalena - La Paz. 170 miles.

The entire morning will be dedicated to observe the huge population of this practically virgin ecosystem, likeHermann’s Gulls, Cormorants, Ospreys, Blue Herons, Egrets and Storm Petrels. You will go ashore the barrier island, to explore the immense extension of moving dunes and, in the afternoon, you will drive to La Paz, the charming capital of Baja California Sur.

Day 8: Los Islotes, El Bajito.

In the morning you will sail to Isola Espiritu Santo to begin the first of the three diving activities expected in these waters.

Situated half a mile north of Isla Espiritu Santo are Los Islotes, two large rock islets, one of which is a natural arch. Diving through the centre of this natural rock formation, brimming with life, one can expect to see dense shoals of silver sardines, blue and gold King Angel Fish and yellow Surgeon fish amongst golden cup corals. These islets are home to a colony of over 200 Californian Brown Sea lions. These inquisitive creatures, take great interest in those visiting their home. One can often turn to find the pups pulling at your fins, eager to play, showing off and turning circles around our comparatively clumsy underwater movements. The larger bulls become pugnacious and territorial during the mating season, in protection of their harem. Underwater circumnavigation of these islands is invariably exciting and always visually diverse.

Depth: 15-100ft.

Temperature: 75-86

Visibility: 60-100ft.

Level: Novice

After diving, landing on a white sandy beach, for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon you will return to La Paz.

Day 9: El Bajo.

Second day of diving.

The seamount is located 8.2 miles, 032° degrees from Los Islotes. There are three distinct underwater peaks, arrayed along a three hundred yard line running 120° – 300°, the northern most rising to within 83ft of the surface, the central peak to within 52ft and the southern to within 69ft. The central peak, with its shallow depths and relatively flattop, is the primary dive site and anchoring location. This is one of the premier dive sites in the world for schooling Hammerhead sharks. Schools range from between six to hundreds, traveling in a clockwise direction around the seamount for unknown reasons. While schooling, hammerheads are not aggressive and, reassuringly enough, they actually appear disinterested in divers. As a seamount, El Bajo is home to an abundance of sea life, mass schooling fish (amber jacks, tuna etc), octopus and the impressive Panamic Green moray; a colony of over fifty can be found in a small canyon. Aside from possible encounters with hammerheads,  frequent visitors to the seamount include whale sharks and giant pacific manta rays.

Depth: 60-100ft.

Level: Advanced Open Water Dive.

Day 10: La Reina, La Reinita.

Third day of diving.

A rock islet just north of Isla Cerralvo, with a lighthouse. This site is among the most beautiful in the area. In depths of 80ft (25m) a large reef is found populated by gorgonias of all types, brain corals, large schools of brightly coloured tropical fish, rays, green, zebra & jewelled morays. This is a “must dive” site! This dive is subject to current, but is home to over 8 giant pacific manta rays.

Depth: 80ft.

Level: Novice to Intermediate

Day 11: La Paz – Los Cabos. 135 miles.

The old road to south will take you to the Sea of Cortez, passing by the ancient towns of El Triunfo and San Antonio, still immersed in their historical past, when precious minerals were extracted from the bowels of the mountains. After a short driving on a dirt road, you will arrive to Cabo Pulmo, marine national park, home of an important coral reef . You can contract an exit at the local diving shop or reserve it for the next day.

Temperature: 65°-75°

Visibility: 80ft.

Continuing off-road, driving across the Tropic of Cancer, the incredible trail that parallels the Gulf, will allow you to discover a majestic succession of isolated beaches, before it takes you to the picturesque San Jose del Cabo, access point to the tourist corridor of Cabo San Lucas.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 12: Los Cabos.

After breakfast, you will have plenty of time for a beautiful glass bottom boat excursion to the famous granite Archway and perhaps to do some shopping. Or you can contact one of the many Diving Shops for a wonderful immersion to the underwater sand falls or go back to Cabo Pulmo, for further immersion.

Day 13: Los Cabos - La Paz. 89 miles.

You will travel north, along the Pacific coast, to visit the mysterious and romantic oasis of Todos Santos, on your way to spend one more night in La Paz.

Day 14: Departure from La Paz.

You will drop the vehicle at the international airport and do the check in for your flight.

SUMMER TOURS

Grand Adventure between Mirages and Whales

13 days / 12 nights You Drive Tour

You will be received at the Airport and taken to the hotel.

You will parallel the enchanting Bahìa Concepciòn and its marvelous lace of white, sandy coves. Then you will visit Mulegè and its severe mission, on a river surrounded by thousands of palm trees and, finally, you will drive to Santa Rosalia, whose vestiges of a rich mining past will bring you back into time, while you will stroll in the picturesque streets of the old French colony.

Day 5: Santa Rosalia - Guerrero Negro. 133 miles.

After crossing the arid volcanic zone of Las Virgenes, you will enter the Vizcaino desert, today partially improved and transformed into flourishing farming fields, thank to a Mexico-Israel project. You will leave the paved road in order to reach the southern shore of Laguna Ojo de Liebre and make your first boat excursion for the observation of the Gray Whale. Every year, in winter, hundreds of gray whales migrate from the Artic regions to the warm waters of Baja California, to give birth and continue the magical reproduction cycle in its protected lagoons. Expert “lancheros” driving powerful boats, will enable you to enjoy unforgettable close encounters with these peaceful giants. You will continue to Guerrero Negro and lodge.

Day 6: Guerrero Negro.

You will travel for few miles to the northern shore of Laguna Ojo de Libre for the second whale watching. Snack on board. In the afternoon you might visit the extraordinary intallations of the company Esportadora de Sal, the largest salt mine in the world. Back to the hotel.

Day 7: Guerrero Negro - Laguna San Ignacio. 126 miles.

You will drive to San Ignacio, the second oasis of the zone, which host one of the most beautiful mission of the XVIII century. After a short visit, you will travel on a partially dirt road, to the Laguna San Ignacio, your third base for the whale watching, where you will stay at a romantic camp, caressed by the breeze of the Pacific Ocean. After lunch you will sail again to the encounter with the giants of the sea. Full board and tent lodging.

Day 8: Laguna San Ignacio.

Time for another surprising whale watching in the lagoon and also to observe the endemic fauna of the large mangrove swamps. Full board and tent lodging.

Day 9: Laguna San Ignacio – Bahìa Magdalena. 256 miles.

You will follow the path of the Baja 1000, the legendary off road race that blast through the peninsula every year, from north to south and between the treacherous mirages of the immense Tide Flats, you will cross the Laguna on your way to the splendid bay of San Juanico, the green orchards of La Purisima, the farming fields of Ciudad Constituciòn, up to Puerto San Carlos, your fourth whale watching base, on the edge of the immense sand dunes of Bahìa Magdalena.

Day 10: Bahìa Magdalena – La Paz. 170 miles.

Although the Gray Whale rapresents the main attraction in these waters, you will also sail to observe the huge population of this practically virgin ecosystem, like Dolphins, Sea Lions, Frigatebirds, Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Heermann’s Gulls, Ospreys and Herons. You will go ashore the barrier island, to explore the immense extension of moving dunes and, in the afternoon, you will drive to La Paz, the charming capital of Baja California Sur.

Day 11: La Paz - Los Cabos. 161 miles.

Day 12: Los Cabos – La Paz. 89 miles.

You will enjoy a beautiful glass bottom boat excursion to the famous granite Archway and perhaps some shopping, before to travel north, along the Pacific coast, to visit the misterious, romantic oasis of Todos Santos, on your way to spend one more night in La Paz.

Day 13: Departure from La Paz.

Our campsite makes it easy to have a close encounter with the gray whales during the southerly migration with almost ten times as many whales compared to other winter nursery grounds lagoons.

From our trip package options to the camp accommodations, we make it a point to bring the comfort of a home far away from home. We offer our guests the facilities to have a great time. Apart from heated wood-sided cabin tents optionally equipped with toilets, we added optional ensuite hot water showers to make our guests comfortable as possible in our remote location. Not only will guests enjoy witnessing the whale jumping from our shoreside campsite, but they may have the opportunity to hear the whales breathing at night. All they need to do is to open a sliding window on the cabin tent facing the bay. We also have a terrific chef, regarded as one of the best in the area of Central Baja waiting to serve you delicious meals.

6 Beaches for Budding Swimmers, Surfers and Castle Builders

For families with children, we found half a dozen beaches in the United States and Mexico, each tailored to a particular summer activity.

The small hands of two children can be seen building sand castles with pails and molds in fine, beige beach sand.

By Freda Moon

A family beach vacation is an American classic. But depending on their children’s ages and inclinations, some families may be drawn to different kinds of shorelines: those featuring clear, calm water for snorkeling and learning to swim; or, for shell collectors and young naturalists, sandy stretches carpeted with seashells or bordered by tide pools. For castle builders, fine sand is a must, while would-be surfers need tidy waves, ready to ride. Here are six great beaches in the United States and Baja California for family-favorite summer activities.

For castle builders: Mission Beach , San Diego

San Diego’s temperate climate allows for barefoot beach days year-round. For those who’d rather build with sand than lie in it, Mission Beach has another advantage: San Diego Sand Castles and the sand sculptor JT Estrela. Mr. Estrela, a former math teacher, offers lessons in the art of sand castle construction on this family-friendly Southern California beach, where the sand is perfect for castle building: The grains are fine but not too silty, clean below the tide line, free of shells and rocks, and pack hard.

In his two-to-three-hour sessions (starting at $160 for two people, $20 for each additional person), Mr. Estrela works with families to build elaborate five-foot-tall castles. The goal is for participants to “feel like this insider of arcane knowledge,” he said.

While the best sand in the San Diego area is at the offshore city of Coronado in San Diego Bay, Mr. Estrela prefers working with families at Mission Beach. Known for its boardwalk amusement park, Belmont Park ; historic beachfront swimming pool, the Plunge ; and excellent playgrounds, it’s particularly fun for kids. The smell of cotton candy and hot dogs hangs in the air, mingling with shrieks from the Giant Dipper, Belmont’s 1925 wooden roller coaster, squawking sea gulls and salt spray. Its biggest downside is its popularity, which means parking can be a challenge.

For new swimmers: Onekahakaha Beach Park , Hilo, Hawaii

In an archipelago known for spectacular beaches, Onekahakaha Beach Park , on the rugged, volcanic coast of the Big Island, may seem a counterintuitive choice. At Onekahakaha, with its two large, sandy-bottomed ocean pools enclosed by lava rock walls and backed by palm trees and an expansive grassy lawn, the sand is mostly below the surface.

Separated from the Pacific Ocean’s notoriously powerful waves and rip currents, the seawater within the pools is warm and placid, protected and shallow, which makes it excellent for little kids learning to swim, as well as for older kids to snorkel. It’s also home to nonthreatening marine life (no sharks here), including green sea turtles.

Though the water is only about waist-deep on an adult, there are lifeguards, adding to Onekahakaha’s reputation for safety. And without a wide swath of sand between the pools and the shoreline path, the water is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. There’s also a swing set, picnic tables and proximity to the lush Hilo area.

As long as you’re on the Big Island, the site of several active volcanoes, visit the thermal pools alongside some of its beaches, including Pohoiki Black Sand Beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park , 40 miles south of Onekahakaha. The ocean there may be a bit rough for young swimmers, but it’s a great place to show children a fresh lava flow.

For would-be surfers: Wrightsville Beach , N.C.

Wrightsville Beach is considered by many surf historians to be the home of East Coast surfing and one of the first places outside Polynesia and the Pacific Rim for the sport to catch on .

It also has some of the best beginner’s breaks in the United States , said Sean Griffin, 37, a surfing instructor and the father of a 5-year-old, who started riding the local break when he was 8.

He points out that Wrightsville is the only surfing beach in the state that has clear, blue water. Being able to see one’s hands and feet and the sandy bottom “makes anyone feel more comfortable in the ocean,” he said.

At Surf With Sean , Mr. Griffin offers private 90-minute lessons ($95 to $120) to surfers as young as 3 and into their 80s, as well as surf camps for kids ($425 per week). “There’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to learn or give it a shot,” said Mr. Griffin, who provides all gear in all sizes, including adaptive equipment.

There’s more to the area’s kid appeal than its waves. Mr. Griffin points to Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier , at the center of the beach, where his son “loves seeing all the salty fisherman pulling in fish,” and the big, modern playground at Wrightsville Beach Park .

For tide pool explorers: Carkeek Park , Seattle

Naomi Tomky — a lifelong Seattleite, author of “ The Pacific Northwest Seafood Cookbook ” and mother of two daughters, 6 and 8 — recommends Carkeek Park in Seattle for an immersive experience in Puget Sound marine life. At low tide, Ms. Tomky said, the narrow beach “just goes out for ages,” exposing tide pools filled with starfish, sea snails, anemones and “many, many crabs, from the size of your fingernail to the size of your hand.”

Unlike tide-pooling elsewhere on the West Coast, where the powerful Pacific Ocean requires caution because of dangerous sneaker waves , Puget Sound is rich with life but calm enough for Ms. Tomky to let her daughters explore on their own.

Just 30 minutes from downtown Seattle, Carkeek is part of the Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program , which sends naturalists to various shorelines around the area.

Along with the below-the-tide-line intrigue, Carkeek is also known for an annual spectacle: spawning salmon. In the fall, it’s possible to stand over the park’s Piper’s Creek and watch the fish — a sacred Indigenous symbol of the Pacific Northwest — on the run.

“It’s one of the coolest things you can see,” said Ms. Tomky, “to understand how these fish share the city with us as they swim back into their former home.”

For shell hunters: Tigertail Beach , Marco Island, Fla.

Sanibel Island, a barrier island just off Fort Myers, Fla., is one of the most famous shelling destinations on the planet. That popularity comes with a downside: It’s often picked over by enthusiasts who hit the shoreline at dawn. The island is also still recovering from Hurricane Ian, which badly damaged its infrastructure in 2022.

As an alternative, the shelling guide Evan Kuperman (a.k.a. Captain Evan) recommends Tigertail Beach on Marco Island, about an hour south.

Mr. Kuperman, a Florida master naturalist , operates Sand Dollar Shelling Tours . His tours ($125 per adult, $90 per child, and families of up to six people for $650) take guests by boat to places like the Ten Thousand Islands , a mangrove mud flat habitat and National Wildlife Refuge.

For visitors unable to join one of his trips, Mr. Kuperman said that Tigertail, a publicly accessible beach ($8 parking fee), offers exceptional shelling.

Marco Island is more built up than Sanibel, but Tigertail, at the island’s north end, is a county-owned park with a lagoon and a position facing the Gulf of Mexico that lends itself to accumulating seashells, including rare and striking ones, like the spiny ornamented lace murex and reddish brown banded tulip .

But everyone is hoping for a junonia, or Juno’s volute, a sea snail that has to travel far in churning waters to reach the beach intact. “You don’t find it,” said Mr. Kuperman, “it finds you.”

For young snorkelers: Playa el Chileno , Los Cabos, Mexico

About halfway between bustling Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, Playa el Chileno is no longer an undeveloped local secret. Now backed by the sprawling Auberge resort Chileno Bay Resort & Residences , the beach remains public and comparatively tranquil. Awarded the Blue Flag certification for meeting stringent environmental standards, Chileno is exceptionally well maintained.

While catamaran snorkeling tours come and go from Chileno Bay, it’s also possible to reach the reef from the shore, which makes it good for inexperienced snorkelers who might find it intimidating to leap into deep water without easing their way in. High Tide Sea Expeditions offers snorkeling excursions via kayak that start at nearby Playa Santa Maria, hug the coast and arrive at Chileno by water. For younger kids and anyone who prefers more time in the water, there’s a guided two-hour tour that visits both beaches by car ($95 to $130 per person, including equipment).

Among the roughly 50 species of fish that snorkelers might encounter along Chileno’s rocky outcroppings and coral reef, there are large tuna, sea turtles, puffer fish, Panamic green moray eels, Cortez angelfish and blacknosed butterflyfish — among many other colorful creatures. The coral here is less vibrant than some places, but the number and variety of fish are thrilling.

Freda Moon, a frequent contributor to the Travel section, lives on a boat in San Francisco Bay with her husband and two kids. Her upcoming National Geographic book with the coauthor Ashley Harrell, “100 Beaches of a Lifetime,” will be published next year.
