Atp challenger event returning to calgary after one-year hiatus back to video.

So The Challenger is once again in front of pro tennis enthusiasts of the city.

The ATP announced Tuesday that the Calgary National Bank Challenger will return to Calgary’s OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre in 2022 after a one-year hiatus due to COVID.

“It’s very important to bring the event back,” said Danny Da Costa, CEO of the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre. “We decided not to run the event in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic, but we are optimistic that we can return the event to pre-pandemic status in 2022.

“We have received a lot of interest and feedback from past competitors, fans, sponsors and players in the tennis community who want the event to return, and we are confident that we will deliver another world-class event this November.”

The ATP Challenger Tour stop — the largest of the loop’s indoor tournaments in Canada — is slated for Nov. 6-13, to be exact.

It will be the opening serve of a three-year renewal between the ATP and the tennis centre in southeast Calgary.

And it marks the third instalment of the tourney on the second-tier circuit of pro tennis, a feeder to the ATP Tour.

“Our event has quickly gained a reputation as one of the premier sporting events in Alberta. and many of the players have mentioned that The Challenger is one of the best challengers in the world,” Da Costa said. “It has quickly become a must-attend event.

“The uniqueness of our event is that it’s held in a tennis club to ensure fans can get up-close and personal to the players,” continued Da Costa. “The success of the event has allowed us to attract some of the best emerging tennis talent on the planet.”

Indeed, The Challenger has attracted former and current top 20 players, including Casper Ruud — currently the No. 8 player in the ATP rankings — Ivo Karlovic — the 2018 Challenger champ and former No. 14 in the world — and Canadian and Davis Cup star Vasek Pospisil — a former top 25 player.

France star Arthur Rinderknech, who is now ranked 60th in the world, won the 2020 edition of The Challenger.

The talent drawn to Calgary’s tour stop has helped make it a quick success.

“We are entering into the golden era of tennis in Canada, and tennis has never been this popular in this country, so I am not surprised by it,” said Da Costa, when asked about how much the event has achieved in such a short time. “Tennis players are among the most recognized names in sport. Locally, there is a lot of interest in tennis in Calgary.”

Gavin Ziv, Tennis Canada’s senior vice-president of professional events, agrees.

“We know how important the Challenger circuit is for the players and how much they enjoy the Calgary event,” Ziv said. “It is especially important for our Canadian players to have the chance to accumulate crucial points in the rankings and compete against international players, particularly after a difficult couple of years.

“We are delighted that professional tennis is returning to Calgary.”

Tickets go on sale in the coming weeks.

For more information on the event, visit calgary.nationalbankchallenger.com or albertatenniscentre.ca.

“We partner with over 100 Alberta based companies, so this event is well-supported by the community,” Da Costa added. “We have created some unique opportunities to engage new fans and partner with the corporate community. We firmly believe that this event will become a staple in the Alberta sporting community for many years to come.

“Our facility expansion this spring will allow us to also increase the number of outreach activities — such as clinics, events and sponsor activations — and hopefully, in 2023, we can introduce a combined women’s and men’s pro event.”

This year’s event will be an ATP Challenger 75 and ITF Women’s Pro Circuit 75 event.

The Challenger is currently the largest international tennis tournament in Canada outside of the National Bank Open. The Calgary stop features many of the best up-and-coming and established stars on the ATP & WTA World Tour.

The tournament has quickly emerged as one of the premier sporting events in Alberta with 13,112 spectators attending the event in November 2023.

The Challenger provided more than one million minutes of complimentary live-streaming coverage to an international audience, while generating more than $3.67 million in economic impact to the local and provincial economy.

In addition to the world-class tennis on display, The Challenger also presents a host of exceptional promotional and community engagement opportunities, which showcase Alberta and the sport of tennis.

“Our Challenger also showcases the best of Alberta,” Da Costa said, “from engaging Alberta’s top chefs and restaurants, event planners and businesses to deliver a world-class experience for the city of Calgary and province of Alberta.”

The 2023 Challenger directly partnered with more than 100 Alberta-based companies to deliver the eight-day event.

“Over 90 per cent of all our event’s partners have offices or are based in Alberta,” continued Da Costa. “And this is something we are extremely proud of, making it a Made in Alberta event. The event has put Calgary on the international tennis map, and we hoping to continue to grow this event in the future.”

The 2023 Challenger was rated among the best ATP Challenger events in the world by players, coaches and tournament officials in ATP Challenger Tour player surveys.

The Challenger was also a 2023 finalist for the Canadian Sport Tourism Awards in 2023, which recognizes Canada’s best national and international sporting events.

Last year, The Challenger became the first International Tennis Federation women’s event in Canada to other paid hospitality to female players.

To support and promote women and girls in tennis, the Challenger hosted several programming activities such as Knix Women’s Day, Girl. Set. Equity and a Women in Coaching conference in conjunction with event partners Tennis Canada, National Bank and the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre.

Fifth a nniversary t icket s will go on sale starting o n Feb. 13.

Calgary National Bank Challenger to Host Combined Event for the First Time

Vasek Pospisil pumps his fist

Photo : Martin Sidorjak

After holding a sold-out event in 2020, the Calgary National Bank Challenger returns for a third edition beginning this weekend that will be bigger than ever. That’s because the tournament will host a $60,000 ITF World Tennis Tour women’s event in conjunction with the usual ATP Challenger Tour stop, making it the only combined professional indoor tennis tournament in Canada.

The addition of the women’s event was made possible by a generous donation from Calgarian Robert Rivard and his family. Rivard, a retired lawyer, is a keen tennis player and supporter of the Alberta tennis community.

To celebrate its welcomed upgrade, the Calgary National Bank Challenger will welcome a star-studded player field to the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre. The biggest headliners are Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Vasek Pospisil. Bouchard, a former WTA world no. 5 and Wimbledon finalist, returned to the tour this summer after recovering from shoulder surgery which kept her sidelined for over a year. One of the most popular players of her generation, Bouchard’s comeback has been a success so as she begins her quest back to the top of the women’s game and she’ll look to finish her 2022 campaign strong while also building momentum heading into the 2023 season.

“I’m looking forward to playing at the Calgary National Bank Challenger. I always enjoy playing at home in front of my Canadian tennis fans. I heard a lot of great things about the Calgary event, and I am looking forward to having a strong finish to my year,” Bouchard said.

Pospisil is so no stranger to playing Canadian ATP Challenger events and usually makes the most of the crowd support he receives everywhere he goes north of the border. The 32-year-old also missed a good chunk of time this year with an injury and recently played an important role in Canada’s qualification for the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain.

RELATED: Eugenie Bouchard and Vasek Pospisil Headline Calgary National Bank Challenger Field

Bouchard and Pospisil will be joined by their compatriots Gabriel Diallo, Alexis Galarneau and Katherine Sebov, who reached the final at the Saguenay National Bank Challenger a few weeks ago. Familiar names like former world no. 12 Sabine Lisicki of Germany and five top 200 players on the ATP Tour, led by world no. 107 Emilio Gomez of Ecuador, will also be taking part in the festivities. Local talent will also be on display with Calgary’s Alexia Jacobs competing in her first professional event, while fellow Calgarian Cleeve Harper will compete in the men’s draw. Harper was crowned the 2022 NCAA doubles champion.

The last time the tournament was held two years ago, current world no. 51 Arthur Rinderknech of France was crowned champion after defeating American Maxime Cressy, now ranked no. 34, in the final.

A World-Class Facility

The Calgary Challenger has quickly gained a reputation as one of the premier sporting events in Alberta and one of the best ATP Challenger tournament events in the world thanks in large part to the first-rate amenities offered by its home, the state-of-the-art OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre.

Opened in 2016, it is one of the country’s premier tennis facilities, championed by local funders with the support of Tennis Canada. Located in the heart of the Acadia neighbourhood, it covers 71,000 square feet, over 3.19 acres and is built to international competition standards. It has quickly established itself as the benchmark for facility design and operation in Canada.

Most importantly, it has been anxiously waiting to welcome back some of the best emerging talents in the world for another memorable week of tennis that will catapult some players to new heights as they attempt to attain the upper echelon of the game.

Sofia Open: Jack Draper becomes youngest Brit to reach ATP Tour final since Andy Murray in 2009

Jack Draper makes the final of the Sofia Open

Britain's Jack Draper became the youngest Brit in 14 years to reach an ATP Tour final after defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 6-4 at the Sofia Open.

At 21 years old, Draper is the youngest British player to compete in a final on the men's circuit since Andy Murray in 2009.

Less than a week on from winning an ATP Challenger Tour event in Italy, he will face Adrian Mannarino in the final on Saturday, after the Frenchman beat Pavel Kotov 6-2 7-6(2) in the other semi-final.

"Obviously I am very proud. Andy is an amazing player. I hope one day I can do what he's done in the sport but it's a long way to go and I'll keep trying," said Draper.

"I didn't serve as well today but the opponent was putting a lot of pressure on my serve. I think I've got to just try and keep the rhythm. It was tough out here with some tense moments. It was a semi-final to get into my first final so I was nervous, but I came through it well."

Great Britain's Daniel Evans, Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Leon Smith, Neal Skupski and Jack Draper celebrate qualifying for the final eight

Draper only joined the ATP Tour in 2021 and received a wild card for Wimbledon, where he took the first set off defending champion Novak Djokovic before going on to lose in four sets.

He won his first Challenger event in 2022 and broke into the top 100 on the ATP rankings in June of that year, before earning a direct entry into Wimbledon and won his first Grand Slam match.

Later that summer, Draper beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open, the first time he made the last eight of an ATP 1000 tournament.

He made the fourth round of the US Open after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets and qualified for the NextGen ATP finals - an end-of-season event for the top eight highest-ranked players aged 21 or under.

Britain's Jack Draper hit a spectacular backhand to help setup his US Open win over Radu Albot.

Draper made a strong start to 2023 as he made the Adelaide International 2 semi-finals after getting the better of Karen Khachanov but lost to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open.

Since then, it's been a season turmoiled by injury but he came back for the US Open and made it to the second week of the Grand Slam after victories over Radu Albot, 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz and Michael Mmoh.

The Briton kicked on from his run as Flushing Meadows with another Challenger final appearance at the Open d'Orleans to get back inside the world's top 100. He won his fifth Challenger title at the Trofeo Faip-Perrel in early November.
