This Open-Range Safari in Alvin is Home to Kangaroos, Zebras, Camels, and More

Just 30 minutes south of Houston, tucked behind some trees off a busy road, an 80-acre African-style safari thrives with over 500 exotic animals from nearly 20 different countries.

The Bayou Wildlife Zoo in Alvin is one of the Houston area’s true hidden gems and the perfect destination for a day full of family fun.

View this post on Instagram   This morning we went to @bayouwildlifezoo in Alvin. My favorites were the emus and ostriches! They followed the tram around the grounds. The ruins of the still were cool, too! #bayouwildlifezoo #alvintexas #wildlife #emus #ostriches #whiskeystill #giraffe #deer A post shared by Anita Giles (@anitantique) on Aug 22, 2020 at 4:55pm PDT

Originally opened in 1986, the wildlife park was recently sold to new owners who have carried on the legacy of the open-air zoo and continued to make it an attraction like no other in the area.

Bayou Wildlife Zoo’s main attraction is the guided tram tour. Hop on a tram and ride through 80 acres where an expert guide will tell you all about the animals you see along the way, including many types of deer, antelopes, buffalos, camels, zebras and other exotic animals. You’ll even have the opportunity to feed some of the animals for a truly memorable, up-close encounter.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. You’ll also have the opportunity to walk through Addie Lou’s Barnyard to see everything from typical farm animals to rare creatures you won’t see anywhere else in the area.

“In the barnyard, you will encounter a Wallaby, Pygmy Goats, Lemurs and much more!,” a statement on Bayou Wildlife Zoo’s website promises .

You can also stop by their big barn to meet giraffes and a pet water buffalo. And while walking between the different areas of the zoo, you’ll see kangaroos, alligators, and many other creatures.

New Measures Keep Guests Safe

Bayou Wildlife Zoo is an open-air zoo, which makes it a safer destination to visit during these times.

Additionally, new practices have been instituted to keep guests safe, including requiring guests to wear masks during their visit, using special viral disinfectants to clean common-use areas and trams, and making the barnyard area observation-only.

Great place to take the kiddos! They have a tram so you don't have to walk around. Buckets to feed the animals are $5

Photo of Toni R.

This place has certainly changed for the better since the new owners took over. Unfortunately, the only real attraction is the train ride through the safari. And that is a very long wait. Not a whole lot to do while you wait. Ince we got on the ride, it was fun. The petting zoo has very few animals to pet. They have a small gift shop with some snacks and there was a snow cone truck.

I was super excited to go feed some animals and that's exactly what I did. The staff was super friendly and nice. The place was huge I was not expecting it. The animals are free waking which was pretty cool. I'm glad they didn't walk up to the car. I would of been so nervous. The price was reasonable! Like your feeding animals and they need to be taken care of it's not cheap. The animals come right up to tram. My fiancé and I sat at the back which was cool watching the animals run to the tram because it they know they are getting food. The lady that was driving was awesome she explained all the animals very well and took her time. She made sure everyone got to feed the animals that came up. I will definitely come back and bring my family and friends with me!

This was pretty fun! There is a tram ride that lasts 30-40 minutes and is narrated by a guide. There is also a tiny petting zoo (with little pigs and goats that you can pet). I recommend allotting extra time for your visit because it can get busy to where you'll have to wait your turn for your tram ride. But there are places for you to sit around and relax or animals to look at, while you're waiting. We arrived about 15 min before they opened at 10am and our tram ride (the first one of the day) wasn't until around 10:40 due to an emergency with one of the animals. It's a good idea to bring food and have a picnic here! There are picnic tables (some of which have partial shade or a cover) and lounge chairs that you can sit on to relax and watch some of the animals -- and eat if you brought food. I recommend buying 1-3 bowls of food to feed the animals on the tram ride. Careful though- one of the ostriches snatched the bowl from my hand and scratched my finger in the process, even though I followed the operator's directions on how to hold the bowl to protect your fingers. Not the operators' fault - animals are animals! But keep this in mind if you have kids who want to hold the bowl themselves. Probably would be safest to have some work gloves or gardening gloves to protect the kiddos' hands.

We were in town to pick strawberries @ Frobergs, and decided to come by and let the kids enjoy a petting zoo and see a few animals. NOTE : This safari does not allow you to drive yourself, so they require you ride a tram. Unfortunately, the wait in between trams was over an hour. Their petting zoo was not opened (midday Saturday) and the only animals "out and about" were 2 deer pacing their own. It's not exactly kid friendly either. The entire barn area has signs everywhere for kids "not to touch"...it is as more of a pain chasing your kids while waiting for the tram. Once you get on the tram, you'll see a lot of white tail (most won't get near the tram) and that's about it. If you're looking for an excellent safari, try the one in college station. It's worth the drive, the cost, and you can drive yourself/time yourself. Bayou is $25 per adult, and $15 per child, and the kids didn't get anywhere near an animal. Pass. The owner responded to the review above, so thought I'd respond to her response. We were there for over 2 hrs, never once was the petting zoo open. We walked back over to check. The signs for the children inside the barn are for their fingers? There are no animals even close enough to touch inside. The white tail was just that. We have land, we aren't dense. And the gentleman driving said as much, NUMEROUS times. Maybe the other "special breeds" were napping? Simply posting the experience we had, for parents with young children that might prefer a better safari elsewhere. Thanks!

We appreciate any feedback. Petting Zoo was closed for 15 minutes, while the staff take a break. As for the signs, it’s for the children, safety not to stick their fingers in the animals mouths. They are wild animals, and they will bite. The white tail you were referring to our barisinga’s from India. We have many species of animals… they are wild animals… not performance animals. Many of the animals… example buffalo, water buffalo, zebras , etc are to admire. Thank you for visiting the zoo.

This is the perfect place to visit if you want interaction with various wildlife animals! The animals aren't aggressive and they will allow you to pet most of them. Some are not suggested for petting, but they have an entire petting zoo perfect for little ones. They have chickens, sheep, deer, and little piglets inside the petting area. There is a trailer ride that takes you around the zoo and makes various stops for feeding. It doesn't take very long to explore the property, but no time limit at the petting zoo! Great experience for young and old.

Awful. Poorly run business. I was not advised that it's significantly bumpy and not recommended for pregnant women to ride until after admittance. I explained this and asked for a refund for myself only. I did not even ask for refund for the feed purchased for myself since my family could just use the extras. My family of 5 would not have attended at all had they informed us of this prior to purchasing admittance. The information necessary to make that decision prior to providing payment would have been the right thing to do. I am pregnant and would never risk the health or safety of my unborn child. Also, be aware that they are not forth coming in wait times. My family waited 45 minutes longer than the original 1 hour we were told the wait would be. Extremely poor ethics and lack of family values. Highly recommended you look else where for an enjoyable family activity.

Great place to go with family and to be close and personal with the animals. Wish it just a bit bigger but honestly it was wonderful and had a great time!

This was so Much fun The jeep ride was amazing Best zoo I ever been too Can't wait to go back and go again

Photo of Grace B.

I'm glad the students had fun but this place is run terribly. Awful place for our Kindergarten field trip. We took our Kindergarten class here on a field trip with the intentions of showing up, having a nice picnic, going on a tram ride and visiting the petting zoo. Upon arrival we were told we could not get out of our bus for 30 minutes, the tram ride would be immediate, and they can't eat yet. This is sixty 5 or 6 year olds with 30 parent chaperones on an almost 90 degree hot day. Students are already sweating and not feeling well due to the heat. We were told 10 parents per class could come. Upon arrival, only 2 parents per class could ride the tram. Even when they paid full price. So separating students from parents. So 30 parents who paid the entry fee were only allowed to sit with the kids while they eat and no petting zoo. Absolutely no care for customers and we're incredibly rude, made us wait in our bus until 11 even though we agreed we would show up at 10. This tells me they don't care about getting anymore business. This was all staff, including manager.

Here’s what I like about Bayou Wildlife Zoo :

  • It’s unexpected. I’d never suspect there was an African Safari tucked away in Alvin.
  • You ride a shaded tram and the animals come to you. No chasing kids in the heat!

Right along a busy road, back behind the trees, is the Bayou Wildlife Zoo. Here they have animals from 19 different countries, including locations in Africa, Asia, Australia, and North and South America.

The last time we went, my big kids were little and my toddler wasn’t even born, so we made the drive down this summer.

The main attraction is the tram ride through the 86-acre property where exotic wildlife is allowed to roam. Not only do you get to see these animals up close, but you can even feed most of them.

Buckets of food are available for purchase and many of the animals will come up and stick their heads right into the tram looking for food!

On this visit, we saw zebras, deer, water buffalos, wildebeests, camels, llamas, Watusi cattle, giraffes, ostriches and emus as well as many more types of animals on our safari-like trip.

Watch out for those ostriches though, they really like their food! (And one was even behind a fence in time-out for stealing hats and sippy cups. My kids are still talking about him!)

Our tram ride lasted about 30 minutes… and we had a minor break down in the middle. For a second I thought it would be like a bad scene from Jurassic Park… but the staff just got us a new tram and animals were not concerned with our little stop. This turned into another highlight of the adventure.

After the tram ride, you can take a pony ride (for kids under 90 pounds), visit the petting zoo or have a picnic.

And on the drive out, you can use any left over food to feed the animals along the road. This was a lot of fun because the animals kept on sneaking around the car and surprising us at different windows!

The big kids really enjoyed going back… and the toddler loved it. She loves the Houston Zoo and this was even better. She sat in awed silence for the entire tram ride, just taking it all in… and has been talking about it for weeks now.

I recommend making the trip to Alvin for this safari … and try to organize a group of 15 so it’s not so expensive. (Just call them to work out the details.) Also, bring water with you on the tram… and a picnic to eat at the shaded tables afterwards.

Oh, and if you want to buy the Bayou Wildlife Zoo , it’s yours!

11 Incredible Things To Do In Charming Alvin, Texas

alvin texas safari

  • Destinations
  • United States

Alvin, Texas, nestled halfway between Houston and Galveston, has grown tremendously in the 21st century, yet the city’s Southern charm remains intact. It’s a hidden gem if you ask me.

Once a farming and ranching town, Alvin’s rich history dates back to 1845 and is widely spread in its museums and historical sites. It was founded by railroad man Alvin Morgan and was originally named “Morgan” before landing on its current name by 1893, when the settlement was incorporated. Today, it’s part of Brazoria County.

Today, with its big-city attractions and its forever charm, the Texas city of Alvin is a great place to eat, stay, and play… and a trip to the sandy beaches is only minutes away. Space Center Houston is a 15-minute drive in the other direction, and just beyond is downtown Houston.

Note: I was hosted by Alvin, Texas, but all opinions are my own.

Things To Do In Alvin, Texas

1. bayou wildlife zoo.

A fun family thing to do while in Alvin is to visit Bayou Wildlife Zoo . It’s the perfect place to make memories and get up close (really close) to feed the animals. You can ride a tram through the 80 acres on a safari-like adventure. This tram ride was one of the highlights of my visit, with fun and surprises along the way. I got to feed several exotic animals from the tram, and some were very eager to get my bowl of animal feed. Just seeing those long tongues was worth the ride! The tram ride is included in the admission fee; animal feed is extra.

Be sure to stop at the Big Red Barn to see the giraffes and miniature ponies and to visit the Bayou General Store. And before you leave, on your way out, the petting zoo is located at Addie Lou’s Barnyard on the left. This area is perfect for small children.

Pro Tip: The tram ride can get quite bumpy at times.

Original Goat Yoga; Alvin, Texas

2. Original Goat Yoga

Nestled on the banks of the Chocolate Bayou, Original Goat Yoga offers exercise and animal therapy with goats. The goats know what to do, so you don’t have to. I experienced this type of exercise for the first time and caught myself laughing more than exercising. Once you’re on your back, a goat will jump up on you. It’s a hoot, really.

Linda, the owner, also has other animals besides the goats on her farm: ducks, chickens, geese, roosters, and a few dogs that help her round up the goats.

If you like goat yoga, perhaps you’ll also enjoy spending the night among them. Linda thought adding a room above the barn, a vintage RV on the property, and a safari tent by the bayou was an excellent idea for vacation rentals. I think so too. It’s called The Goatel . And let me tell you, all three are sweet! My favorite is the darling room above the barn, decorated with Southern charm and overlooking the animals.

3. Alvin Art Trail

From murals to animals carved out of the tree trunks left by a tropical storm several years ago, you’ll have a camera full of photos and lots of town history when you follow the Alvin Art Trail . You’ll find an online guide with addresses to each piece of art in the city. If you like taking selfies with wings, you’re in for a treat; I think I counted three or four different sets of wings in town. But don’t miss Stanton’s Family History mural. There’s a lot of history behind the Stanton family, and the mural was recently featured in a Texas Highways article .

Inside of Froberg's Farm

4. Froberg’s Farm

Depending on what time of year, Froberg’s Farm offers pick-your-own fruit, vegetables, and flowers. With each changing season, the farm offers something different. Fall time features its annual fall festival with rides and several attractions. (I missed it by a few days, but I saw all the prep.) In the spring, the farm becomes a place to play among the flowers and fruits.

The country store is open Sunday through Wednesday. On my visit, I bought Brazilian nuts and chocolate-covered almonds for the drive home.

5. National Oak Park

This 8-acre park is a multi-functional park with a hiking and biking trail, skate park, playground, covered pavilions with picnic tables, and three animal tree sculptures (owls, wings, and birds) worth seeing. The sculptures are part of the art trail.

The park is conveniently located behind the Alvin Train Depot Centre, a 100-year-old train depot worth stopping by if there’s time.

6. Alvin Historical Museum

Calling all Texas Ranger fans! Alvin’s claim to fame, Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, has his personal collections — from his days as a little leaguer to his final Major League Baseball run with the Texas Rangers — displayed at the Alvin Historical Museum . His family moved to Alvin when he was an infant, and Ryan lived there until he moved to another Texas town in 2003. Other museum exhibits highlight NASA and Alvin’s history and culture.

7. Alvin Antique Center And Marketplace

Reminisce about days gone by and maybe find that antique piece you’ve been searching for at this 55,000-square-foot antique mall full of pieces from the past. If time allows, grab something to eat at the tea room, Teaspoon.

Alvin Antique Center is open Tuesday through Sunday. I can’t believe I didn’t have time to go inside!

Disc golf at Briscoe Park in Alvin, Texas

8. Briscoe Park Disc Golf

Briscoe Park is a 42-acre park with a walking trail, a large dog park, an all-inclusive playground, a fishing pond, and a golf course lit up at night for fun under the moon. I was there during the day and watched a professional team play disc golf. Of course, I tried my hand at it, but it’s harder than I thought! Concessions and restrooms are on the premises.

Camp Mohawk in Alvin, Texas

9. Camp Mohawk County Park

A great place to stay, especially if the kids are with you, is Camp Mohawk . It’s a 55-acre day-use park with overnight cabins in a wooded setting along the Chocolate Bayou. It is great for bird watching, nature viewing, and fishing; plus, it has picnic areas with grills, a playground, and basketball and volleyball available. A marvelous place to stay for outdoorsy people.

Pro Tip: Bring your own linens and towels.

Gentle Ben Vodka at the Gentle Ben Tasting Room

10. Gentle Ben Tasting Room

A great distillery in town offering bourbon, gin, and vodka tastings you won’t find anywhere else. Gentle Ben is a state-of-the-art facility with outstanding decor, a bar, tables, and two areas where you can sit in comfy chairs relaxing while enjoying your tasting and watching TV.

11. The Alvin Foodie Trail

Dine at some of the best restaurants in Alvin, Texas, and win prizes! I can attest to these places, as I visited them on my recent trip.

Two stamps earn points toward prizes from Visit Alvin. The more stamps you get, the more prizes you’ll get. Get at least five stamps, and you will be in the drawing for an Alvin weekend getaway. It’s a fun way to get to know the city!

1820 coffee house.

1820 Coffee House is conveniently located in town and a great place to hang out with your group.

I had never had an iced coffee flight until now. It’s four cold brews of your choice. That’s my recommendation, but there are other coffees, such as specialty coffees for each season, house coffee, and many others. You may want to try something new and order the Cold Brew Spritzer (a cold coffee with lemonade) or Cowboy Cookie with Texas pecan coffee, mocha, cinnamon, and coconut.

MyLeigh’s Cafe & Catering

Serving made-from-scratch soups, sandwiches, and comfort foods, MyLeigh’s Cafe needs to be your next stop for lunch. My turkey cranberry sandwich was excellent and plentiful. The tuna salad sandwich was sold out when I got there, so if that’s a favorite of yours, get there early!

Gordon Street Tavern

Order a beer, a burger, pork short ribs, a specialty drink, or anything else on the menu. You can’t go wrong here. Gordon Street Tavern opened its door over 9 years ago in one of Alvin’s oldest buildings. With over 100 years of history inside those walls, a dish like Go Pig or Go Home, a Jamimn Waygu burger, and a delicious Devonshire Cream dessert, there is much to talk about.

Smokin D’s BBQ Fusion

How much do you like barbeque? How about a plate of smoked brisket with cheesy macaroni stuffed in a tortilla and topped with a signature Southwest ranch? Yes, it’s a thing, and it’s called Brisketmacilla. It’s one of those times when you might say, “don’t knock until you try it.” We ordered it, and it was delicious!

But Smokin D’s BBQ Fusion serves up some other fabulous items. To sample other foods, I suggest ordering the Jr. Plate. Not sure why it’s called “Jr.”, because it’s everything but. You’ll get a small portion of local favorites, including Brisketmacilla.

Grace Pizza & Shakes

I hear the pizza at Grace Pizza & Shakes is out-of-this-world good, but we went for the shake! One shake fed three of us — it’s that huge!

My advice: Go for pizza, but be sure to order a shake. If you’ve already had lunch, skip the pizza and share a shake.

Pro Tip: Be sure to visit the two murals on the building — one is a gorgeous wing.

Juanita’s Taqueria

Swing by Juanita’s Taqueria for delicious, homemade Mexican food. This is another favorite local spot for breakfast and lunch. I went for breakfast and ordered migas — crunchy pieces of corn tortillas with scrambled eggs, jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes. Whatever you choose, I recommend their green sauce with everything! Closes at 3 p.m.

This Texas Glamping Property Near Austin Has Safari Tents With Wrap-around Decks and Is Next to a State Park

Outdoorsy Hill Country is tucked in the rolling Texas hills near the state's iconic wine trail.

If you need another reason to visit the Texas Hill Country , consider this: the rolling landscape is now home to a luxury glamping retreat with safari tents surrounded by wrap-around decks and a spring-fed lake. The new property, Outdoorsy Hill Country , is both the latest addition to the Texas Hill Country and the newest property in the Outdoorsy portfolio, an RV rental marketplace that is making a name for itself for its glamping-style retreats.

Outdoorsy Hill Country is nestled in Stonewall, Texas, between Austin and Fredericksburg on 32 acres. The property is expansive, with a spring-fed lake, walking trails, and a grove of live oaks. The day starts and ends with one of Texas’ spectacular sunrises and sunsets — best viewed from the wrap-around deck enveloping each of the property’s 22 safari tents.

“Our vision was to create an iconic destination that fuses rustic charm, immersive outdoor experiences, and refined Hill Country hospitality for thoughtful travelers from Texas and beyond,” Jeff Cavins, Outdoorsy's CEO, said in a press release shared with Travel + Leisure .

Jen Young, the co-founder and CMO of Outdoorsy, added, "We fell in love with Hill Country when we built a glamping tent for ourselves … we couldn't be more delighted to share this space with guests who are seeking out the restoration that time in nature provides.”

While nature may be the focus of a stay at Outdoorsy Hill Country, the highlight is the lodging. Each all-season glamping tent is surrounded by a panoramic deck and private fire pit.

Inside, there’s a king-size bed and a twin and trundle bed to sleep two to four people and full temperature control, with both heat and air-conditioning on tap. Rounding out the offerings are a fully equipped kitchenette and a private ensuite bathroom with a rainshower and plush robes.

Beyond the privacy of your secluded hideaway, you’ll find a handful of on-property offerings, including a cafe and bar with outdoor seating overlooking the neighboring Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and a menu that features juices, smoothies, and grab-and-go breakfast options in the morning and craft cocktails and local wines at night.

The live oaks provide shelter for the outdoor live music venue, while the country store sells everything you need to grill or assemble an afternoon picnic.

Further afield, guests can explore the Texas Wine Trail , which is on the doorstep of Outdoorsy Hill Country. (Plus, the Crown Hill Winery is right next door). In the neighboring towns of Luckenbach and Albert, there are historic dance halls, while the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park is just across the road.

Outdoorsy Hill Country is now taking reservations for stays starting March 21. The property’s first round of guests will be treated to views of the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8.

One person not frequently seen at Trump's trial: Alvin Bragg, the D.A. who brought the case

By Graham Kates

May 16, 2024 / 1:26 PM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump often arrives at his New York criminal trial flanked by elected officials who choose to while away the hours sitting in a courtroom.

They sit in the first two rows of the court on Trump's side, a section reserved for his team. On the prosecution's side, the same section often has an empty seat, reserved for a public official who's mostly chosen to do other work during the trial: Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney.

Bragg has attended portions of proceedings here and there, primarily on days when his own staff — including young paralegals — are called to testify as custodial witnesses and then are subject to defense grilling.

"Bragg is doing it the right way," said Domenic Trunfio, a Syracuse University law professor.

Trunfio ran the day-to-day operations of the Onandaga County district attorney's office in Syracuse for nearly two decades, with a jurisdiction of about half-a-million people, one-third the size of Manhattan. He said it's meaningful that Bragg shows up for his staff.

"It shows support. It says, 'Hey, I'm here. I know you're testifying in a case against the former president of the United States. And I'm here for you,'" said Trunfio.

That was the case when paralegal Georgia Longstreet was challenged by Trump attorney Todd Blanche over whether she has independent knowledge of how X (formerly Twitter) or Trump's Truth Social network append timestamps to social media posts — or if she could affirmatively say who Trump was talking about when he posted, "If you go after me, I'm coming after you!"

"I have my assumptions, but, no," Longstreet said, sitting some 10 feet from Trump.

And he watched as another Trump attorney, Emil Bove, asked paralegal Jaden Jarmel-Schneider if creating phone call log charts was "tedious" work.

"Honestly, I kind of enjoyed it," said Jarmel-Schneider, prompting laughter in the courtroom.

"I hear that. Respect," Bove replied.

A spokesperson for Bragg declined comment for this story.

Trump has entered a not guilty plea in the case, in which he's charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The documents were allegedly meant to hide "hush money" payments made in 2016 to adult film star Stormy Daniels, who at the time agreed not to speak publicly about a sexual encounter that Trump denies.

Bragg has attended parts of about one-third of the trial's 18 days, but even that level of attendance is extraordinarily rare for a Manhattan D.A., according to Diana Florence, who worked for Bragg's two predecessors.

"In my 25-year career, where I did a lot of high profile cases, the D.A. came to my summations a couple of times and to opening statements a couple of times," Florence said. "But generally speaking, that wasn't really something they would do."

Florence said D.A.s are typically too busy with other aspects of the job to sit in on trials, such as pushing legislation relevant to law enforcement or their office and reviewing other major cases coming before grand juries.

Bragg has done both in the last month. Among other things, he championed an update to New York's hate crimes legislation that was included in the state's fiscal year 2025 budget, sent a letter asking YouTube to modify algorithms that he said recommended videos to kids about how to make ghost guns and 3D-printed guns, and he joined a push for a bill that would allow prosecutors to more easily introduce evidence in sex crimes cases that show defendants' prior "bad acts."

That bill was inspired by an April 25 New York Court of Appeals decision overturning the rape conviction of former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

His office has also announced major indictments, including ones related to the murder of a man shoved in front of a subway, sex trafficking, a large-scale retail theft ring and a notorious landlord accused of harassing his tenants.

Florence and Trunfio said for big cases like those, as well as the Weinstein case and of course, the Trump case, prosecutors need the D.A.'s buy-in. Ultimately, it's his name on the indictment.

"The elephant in the room here is this is the biggest criminal case that anybody has seen in a century," said Trunfio.
