The professional documentaries that you see on television on wildlife involve months of shooting, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and plenty of resources. Importantly, you don’t see those things when you yourself are on a tiger safari tour.

Please see the video below shot by our team during a tiger safari tour  in India, using a regular video camera, in a regular wildlife safari vehicle, with no tripods, and no extra permissions. This is how you see tigers during a tiger safari in India . We are here to guide you on important things to keep in mind before you go out for a tiger safari India tour. Tiger Safari India Tour Destinations

There are over 600 national parks in India which are home to close to 200 endangered mammal species. The Royal Bengal Tiger is one of the flagship species as not only is it the apex predator of the very forests that thrive here, but it is also the biggest cat among its brothers.

Recently conducted, the latest Tiger census saw a substantial increase of about 22% in the big cat population. While this is attributed to the commendable effort of the people involved in conservation, this feat is also credited to the resilience and adaptability of the Royal Bengal Tiger throughout the entire Indian subtropical eco-system.

National Parks in India vary with varying tropics and landscapes. We have the dry deciduous forest of Ranthambore National Park in the western part of India, while the evergreen Sal forest of Kanha National Park thrives in Central India. Corbett National Park is unique as it rests in the foothills of the Great Himalayan Range, making it an awe-stunning frame to capture. India has some of the most biodiverse lands, making it a hotspot for wildlife and tiger safaris and nature enthusiasts.

It is also important to note that Wildlife Tourism in India has played a key role in the conservation of important flora and fauna in our national parks. The flow of money into local communities because of tourism-related activities, has considerably reduced the pressure on the forests for bio-mass. This development has allowed the resurgence of wildlife within national parks of India , which in turn allows visitors to immerse in complete wilderness experiences as animals go about their extraordinary lives. Mentioned below are some of the most enthralling national parks for wildlife and tiger safaris in India, that invite eco enthusiasts from around the globe.

8 finest zoos in India and abroad

Z oos are the perfect place for travellers, especially children, to learn about native animals and their habitats by interacting with them up close.

Therefore, we have curated a comprehensive guide to the best zoos in India and abroad. These unique zoos are fun destinations to spend a day with family while travelling. Additionally, these places play a big part in the conservation of endangered species. Here are the eight finest zoos globally:

Founded in 1829, Zoo Zürich is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. This zoo is home to more than 340 animal species, including endangered species, in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments.

Zoo Zürich has diverse ecosystems that house the animals, such as the Himalayas, South American grasslands, the Masoala Rainforest Hall, and the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park. These sprawling areas offer animals plenty of room to roam freely.

This zoo features a nature conservation centre that works on international breeding programmes to relocate animals to their native habitats.

The Zoo Zürich also has a petting zoo where guests can interact with native livestock and domesticated animals.

Bronx Zoo, New York City

The Bronx Zoo is the largest city zoo in the United States and one of the oldest and most well-loved zoos globally.

Located in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York City, this 265-acre zoo houses more than 6,000 animals.

Open year-round, this zoo is particularly enjoyable in the winter when visitors can witness big cats roaming around in the cold outdoors.

We highly recommend the Bronx Zoo’s Treetop Adventure, which features an adventure course and zipline. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore the zoo in a new and more exhilarating way.

The zipline is an exciting 400-foot-long ride 50 feet above ground over the trees and the Bronx River.

Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington DC

Visited by over two million guests annually, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park is also known as the National Zoo.

Located in Washington DC’s residential Woodley Park neighbourhood, this zoo’s habitats include animals from 300 different species, and about 25 per cent of the zoo’s residents are endangered.

The National Zoo has 18 distinct areas to explore, and is handicapped and stroller accessible. This zoo's animals are taken care of by leading zoologists and veterinarians.

The highlights of this 163-acre zoo are the lions, tigers, giraffes and the endangered giant pandas — adults Tian Tian and Mei Xiang and one-year-old Xiao Qi Ji.

Johannesburg Zoo

Located alongside a serene lake and in the verdant northern suburbs of Johannesburg, this zoo was established in 1904.

The Johannesburg Zoo boasts 2,000 animals from nearly 320 species, including rare birds, lions, and apes.

This park has been home to several renowned animals, like Max the gorilla, who was born in the zoo in 1988 and was alive until 2014.

The Johannesburg Zoo also has an educational centre that hosts fun learning activities for adults and children.

Moreover, the Johannesburg Zoo features rolling green lawns, tennis, and basketball courts, a swimming pool and a sports club.

ZooParc de Beauval, Saint-Aignan

ZooParc de Beauval is a zoological park located in Saint-Aignan, France. Saint-Aignan is about a three-hour drive from Paris.

This zoo is one of the largest in the world and houses over 35,000 animals representing over 800 species.

ZooParc de Beauval has numerous themed areas. The most popular ones include the African savannah, the Asian forest, the tropical rainforest, and the polar world.

Guests can go on self-guided tours or take a cable car ride through the zoo. Additionally, ZooParc de Beauval’s shows and activities for children are educational and fun.

Dubai Crocodile Park

The Dubai Crocodile Park is a crocodile farm and zoo located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This unique zoo is home to over 250 crocodiles. These include Nile crocodiles, saltwater crocodiles, and American alligators.

This zoo aims to protect the population of crocodiles and educate the public.

The Nile Crocodile Enclosure and the American Alligator Enclosure are the most visited areas of the Dubai Crocodile Park.

At this zoo, guests can visit the various crocodile habitats, learn about crocodiles and their conservation, take a guided tour, have a picnic, or check out the petting zoo.

Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is visited by tourists and locals alike. It has 2,800 animals from over 300 species.

Highlights of the Singapore Zoo include the Night Safari, the Rainforest, the Panda Forest, the Wildlife Theatre, and the River Safari.

The Night Safari is a one-of-a-kind experience which allows guests to see animals at night.

The Singapore Zoo’s Panda Forest is also very popular. Guests can watch two giant pandas — Kai Kai and Jia Jia eat, play, and interact with each other.

This zoo works to save endangered species and has helped protect many species from extinction, like the Sumatran rhinoceros and the white-cheeked gibbon.

Mysore Zoo, Mysuru

Officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, the Mysore Zoo is home to over 1,600 animals and 168 species of birds from more than 25 countries.

The Mysore Zoo's Lion Safari, Reptile House, Butterfly Park, and Children's Zoo are worth checking out.

The Children's Zoo is where kids of all ages can learn about animals by interacting with goats, sheep, and rabbits.

In addition, guests can tour the zoo via the Zoo Train, which takes them through all the different areas of the park.

Kukrail Night Safari project approvals still awaited

Due to changes in the offices of the lucknow zoo director and the divisional forest officer (dfo), the kukrail night safari plan, earlier slated to be completed by the end of 2023, is still in the planning stage.

With grand plans for the Kukrail Night Safari project making headlines and the completion date being pushed back, it appears that the forest department is yet to receive the necessary permissions to embark on the project. Still in the planning stages, the Night Safari project plan has yet to secure proper approval from the required channels.

There is still no clarity on when and where in the country the compensatory afforestation will take place to make up for the felled trees. (HT File)

CZA final nod awaited

To get the green light for beginning the Kukrail Night Safari project, specific plans including land allotments, landscaping, the moving of animals, and other logistics need to be presented to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in Delhi. This body will review the plans to check for feasibility and either suggest revisions or approve them. However, the plan is yet to reach the CZA’s table. The forest department and the public works department teams, along with other stakeholders, are still engaged in joint surveys to map out the entirety of the zoo cum night safari.

Due to changes in the offices of the Lucknow Zoo director and the divisional forest officer (DFO), the Kukrail Night Safari plan, earlier slated to be completed by the end of 2023, is still in the planning stage. Although Zoo director Aditi Sharma, in an interview with HT at the end of 2023, said that the in-principle, or unofficial, go-ahead on the master plan from the CZA had already been received in mid-2023, the submission and formal approval are yet to materialise. The authorities are in the process of recruiting a consulting agency to prepare and finalise the master plan before presenting it to the central authorities. At that time, the project completion date was postponed by another two to two and a half years.

SC appeal yet to be filed

More importantly, in February this year, the Supreme Court declared that any zoo or safari constructions in reserve forest areas need to be permitted by the apex court of the country. For this, an office has been created for the Director of the Kukrail Night Safari project, which is handling the process of acquiring permission from the Supreme Court to erect the safari at Kukrail, according to the interim order passed in February this year.

Abu Arshad Khan, from the office of the director, shared that the process is still underway, and the final plans are yet to be drawn up before sending them to the Supreme Court, which can only happen post CZA approval. “We do not yet have any status updates to share regarding the Supreme Court approval for the zoo, as we have not sent the proposal to the court yet. The final master plan approval is still to be given by the CZA,” informed Khan.

The DFO who has recently taken over charge in Lucknow, Sitanshu Pandey, has spoken of a pre-joint survey that was undertaken by the forest department and the public works department, wherein they are attempting to determine how many trees would need to be felled to construct a connecting road from the city to the to-be safari. This decision has environmentalists up in arms about the loss of green cover to the city and the further risks a shift in the ecosystem might pose to the animals.

Additionally, there is still no clarity on when and where in the country the compensatory afforestation will take place to make up for the felled trees, according to the Forest Conservation Act.

Critically endangered antelope arrives at zoo

Mountain bongo

The 11-year-old male came to the zoo from Woburn Safari Park

  • Published 7 June 2024, 06:35 BST

Paignton Zoo has announced the arrival of an eastern mountain bongo.

The forest antelopes are currently listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The 11-year-old male, named Bowie, made the journey from Woburn Safari Park to join the conservation charity’s two females, with hopes that they will breed.

The zoo said the arrival marked a "significant step" towards conserving the creatures and safeguarding their survival.

Sam Gray, Paignton Zoo’s team leader of large mammals, said he was delighted to welcome the antelope to the zoo.

He said: "Bowie’s participation in this breeding programme emphasises our dedication to preserving biodiversity and ensuring a brighter future for Eastern mountain bongo."

Bowie is set to be kept away from the females for the first few days, but will still be visible to the public.
