Zambia - International tourism

International tourism, number of arrivals.

The value for International tourism, number of arrivals in Zambia was 502,000 as of 2020. As the graph below shows, over the past 25 years this indicator reached a maximum value of 1,266,000 in 2019 and a minimum value of 163,000 in 1995.

Definition: International inbound tourists (overnight visitors) are the number of tourists who travel to a country other than that in which they have their usual residence, but outside their usual environment, for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose in visiting is other than an activity remunerated from within the country visited. When data on number of tourists are not available, the number of visitors, which includes tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members, is shown instead. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases data are from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For some countries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying in hotels. Some countries include arrivals of nationals residing abroad while others do not. Caution should thus be used in comparing arrivals across countries. The data on inbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival.

Customer preferences: Travelers in Zambia are increasingly seeking unique and authentic experiences that allow them to immerse themselves in the local culture and natural beauty of the country. This shift towards experiential travel has led to a rising demand for sustainable and eco-friendly tourism options, as visitors look to minimize their impact on the environment and support local communities. Trends in the market: One prominent trend in the Zambian travel market is the growing popularity of adventure tourism activities, such as safaris, river rafting, and bungee jumping. Additionally, the development of luxury lodges and resorts catering to high-end travelers has contributed to the overall growth of the tourism sector. Local special circumstances: Zambia's strategic location in the heart of Southern Africa, with easy access to other popular destinations like Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, has positioned it as a key player in the regional tourism market. Zambia Records Record Increase in Tourism Numbers

In the first quarter of 2024, Zambia has recorded an increase of 24% in tourist arrivals to the country.

Such an influx in tourism is undoubtedly a positive sign for the growth of the economy. The Chief Executive Officer of the Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA), Matongo Matamwandi has praised the government’s efforts in marketing the country abroad, resulting in the increase.

In an interview with ZNBC on 27th May, he revealed the goal of the ZTA was to surpass two million tourists this year, compared to last year’s one million, four thousand international visitors.

Trade expert Gilbert Nkamba said, “with tourists flowing in, first of all there will be an explanatory effect. As they go out of Zambia they will go and market us further and we will have more tourists coming in. The positive effect, the net effect of that, is more foreign exchange trickling into the economy, and that will go a very long way in stabilising the Kwacha.

The tourism market is expected to grow annually at a rate of 5.29% from 2024 to 2028, resulted in a projected market volume of US $169.20 million by 2028. Zambia is expected to experience a rise in eco-tourism, with visitors being attracted to the country’s wildlife reserves before any further effects from extreme weather conditions arise.

The tourism industry has grown, and continues to grow, with the establishment of hotels in major tourist centres such as Livingstone and Lusaka.

What Zambia wants you to know about its 2023 Tourism campaign

Mark-Anthony Johnson

The Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) is targeting over 1.5 million international tourists as part of its 2023 marketing plan to accelerate recovery in the southern African nation.

The Agency, last week launched the 2023 Marketing Plan for Destination Zambia, which is an initiative to create integrated and holistic strategies to promote and boost demand for the country’s Tourism through increased arrivals. It sets out the general outlook and perspectives for the overall marketing programme for Tourism in Zambia, and strategies and priorities to achieve a successful and sustainable tourism destination.

ZTA is optimistic about sustained growth driven by increased budgetary support from Government for marketing activities, VISA waiver for specific source markets, and increased consumer confidence in tourism products.

Speaking at the launch of the marketing plan, Zambia’s Minister of Tourism and Arts Rodney Sikumba said the launch of the country’s marketing plan focuses on repositioning the tourism sector for sustainable growth.

”I am happy to be here with you today and launch the country’s marketing plan that focuses on repositioning the tourism sector for sustainable growth. The need to place tourism as a key instrument in Zambia’s transformational and developmental agenda remains important for the government and we have demonstrated our resolve to make tourism a catalyst for economic growth through various pronouncements that support the requisite conditions to make tourism flourish in our country.” Rodney Sikumba said.

”The new dawn government has provided an enabling environment for more private sector participation and this has been demonstrated through the creation of the private sector dialogue forum, a platform that serves as a critical link between the government and the private sector.

This great initiative by the government should give us the impetus to explore new market opportunities to enhance and stimulate growth in the economy.” the minister noted.
