As one of the must-see places in Colorado , Ouray and the surrounding San Juan Mountains offer up plenty of adventure and majestic mountain scenery. The unique nature of the mineral-rich peaks creates a colorful mountain display that will have you drooling.

One of the best things about visiting Ouray, Colorado is the wide variety of adventures right near your fingertips. From unbelievably scenic drives to adrenaline-pumping via Ferratas, there’s an adventure for everyone.

As a long-time Colorado local, I have spent plenty of time in Ouray and the surrounding areas over the years. Is Ouray Worth Visiting?

Ouray is easily one of the best places to visit in Colorado hands-down. It’s an utterly stunning gateway to some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado. Unbelievable mountain views are easily accessible by car.

But if you want to really get into the thick of it, you can enjoy some of the most challenging hikes in Colorado too. WIth plenty of activities in Ouray, there’s an adventure waiting for everyone.

What I personally love about this area is that you can have a challenging adventure, then relax and just enjoy the view. It’s the perfect blend of high-octane and RnR. If this post hasn’t convinced you that the best things to do in Ouray offer a little bit of everything, then I haven’t done my job!

Where is Ouray, Colorado?

Ouray is located in Southwestern Colorado at the base of the mighty San Juan Mountains. It’s a small, scenic town nestled in a cliff-ridden valley along Highway 550 – or the San Juan Scenic Byway. It marks the northern start of the famous Million Dollar Highway – one of Colorado’s most scenic drives.

With only one way in and out of this old mining town, you really feel cozy nestled in the mountains. Nearby towns include:

• Ridgeway, Colorado – 20 minute drive
• Montrose – about an hour drive
• Silverton – 45 minute drive
• Durango , Colorado – 1 hr 45 minute drive

Denver is roughly 5.5 hours away.

Local Tip: You’re going to want to have a 4WD, high clearance vehicle such as a Jeep or 4Runner here. There is a lot of exploring that requires a duty vehicle. You can certainly rent one at Colorado West Jeeps or Ouray Mountain Adventures.

When is the Best Time to Visit Ouray?

Ouray is an amazing place any time of year. In fact, you’d be surprised to learn that there are quite a few things to do in Ouray in the winter, summer, spring, and fall.

The best time to visit this “Little Switzerland” is from mid-July through September. 4th of July is crowded here and snow typically lingers into the end of June. July marks wildflower season, so if you’re into experiencing some of the best wildflower hikes in Colorado , then July through early August is your time.

As one of the top places to visit for fall in Colorado , Ouray is a must-see when the aspens turn. Typically peak leaf-peeping lasts until the end of September.

October and November in Colorado are great times to visit Ouray if you want a quiet experience. It’s often pretty cold, so camping might not be ideal, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy a lot of the best hikes in Ouray and other outdoor pursuits. However, some of the high pass 4WD roads may be closed for the season.

If you’re into adventure sports, winter is a great time to visit Ouray. The annual Ouray Ice Festival is a must-see – even if you’re new to the sport. You can also backcountry ski to a full-service hut or soak in hot springs and enjoy the snow-capped peaks.

How Long Should I Stay in Ouray, Colorado?

I’ll be honest – I would move here if it made sense for my husband. You could literally spend a lifetime exploring Ouray, Colorado and never run out of things to do.

You’ll want at least two full days to truly get a feel for Ouray. If you’re interested in exploring the nearby towns of Silverton and Ridgeway (which I highly recommend), you’ll need about 5 days in Ouray to really hit the highlights.

What is Ouray Known For?

Often called the “Little Switzerland of America” Ouray is most well-known for its incredible scenery. Picture-perfect peaks paired with stunning canyons give Ouray a natural, beautiful feel. When it comes to things to do in Ouray, there are a few notable activities including:

What is the Story of Ouray?

Believe it or not, Ouray was based in Colorado in the late nineteenth century and was the leader of the Tabeguache (Uncompahgre) branch of Ute Indians.

He was eventually given the title of the Chief of the Utes in Colorado by the American government.

Why is Ouray called Ouray?

Ouray is named for the previously mentioned Chief Ouray, whose father was a Jicarilla Apache and whose mother was a Tabeguache Ute.

What is it Like Living in Ouray?

Living in a popular tourist destination has its pluses and minuses. Although I’ve never lived here, I did have a few friends that called Ouray home. They eventually left because rent and the cost of living rose beyond what any normal human can afford – a normal occurrence.

But it’s lovely to live in a place that has such amazing access to outdoor pursuits. Winters here can be pretty rough – it’s easy to get snowed in for days at a time and there aren’t a lot of services in Ouray. The nearest big town is Montrose, which is about 40 minutes away.

The Best Things to Do in Ouray Year-Round

It doesn’t matter when you visit, these amazing things to do in Ouray, Colorado are excellent any time of year.

Cruise Down Main Street

Take a walk down Main Street in Ouray. You’ll see the usual tourist shops, local artisans, and plenty of great mountain food. Sometimes it’s fun to sit on a patio and watch the parade of Jeeps come back in the evening. It’s almost as if everyone owns either a Jeep or Toyota in this town!

Visit the Box Canyon Falls Park in Ouray

Box Canyon Falls, located just outside of Ouray offers three main easy trails that deliver excellent views of Canyon Creek. There are several 100-plus-foot waterfalls to gasp at. The mist from the falls feels so good on a hot summer’s day, but be sure to bundle up in winter.

Local Tip: Most of the Ouray hikes require steep elevation gains thanks to the sharp, imposing mountains surrounding the area. The Box Canyon Falls Park offers the easiest hiking options in the area.

Drive the San Juan Skyway and Million Dollar Highway

You simply can’t come to Ouray and not drive the San Juan Skyway. For starters, you need to drive the road just to access the town. The San Juan Scenic Byway starts in Ridgeway (if you’re coming from the north) and loops 233 miles through Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Dolores, Telluride and back to Ridgeway.

This scenic byway is one of the prettiest drives in the US and is best done over multiple days to get the full experience. It’s an excellent addition to any Colorado road trip.

One section of the San Juan Scenic Byway, from Ouray to Silverton, stretches for 25 miles of unbelievable scenic driving. This winding ribbon of tarmac (often without guardrails) is called the Million Dollar Highway . It’s incredible and a must-do activity in Ouray and you van check out Engineer Pass too.

Keep in mind, that the road can close in winters due to avalanche hazards. It’s generally a 3-season road, but if some of the viewpoints are accessible just minutes from Ouray.

Local Ti p: Drive this road during the golden hour (about 2 hours before sunset) for stunning lighting.

Visit the Alchemist Museum

Ouray, Colorado was one of the most successful mining towns in the Centennial State. Some of the largest silver veins in the US were found here. With that came some of the biggest medical innovations of Frontier Era Colorado. The Ouray Alchemist Museum offers an impressive display of 16th to 18th-century medical devices. Learn about the unique history of this area at the museum.

Scope Out a Brewery

If you enjoy a local brew, then you’ll want to check out the (surprisingly) large lineup of breweries in the small town of Ouray. KJ Wood Distillers, Mr. Grumpy Pants Brewing, Ouray Brewery, and Red Mountain Brewing all serve up locally-sourced adult beverages for you to enjoy.

Local Tip: If you opt for Mr Grumpy Pants, don’t forget to grab a burger at Maggies Kitchen. Come hungry! They are BIG!

Drive the Famous Black Bear Pass

Known as the most dangerous 4×4 road in Colorado, driving Black Bear Pass from Ouray to Telluride is bucket list activity. The 8.5-mile, one-way (descending into Telluride), is generally simple with a high-clearance 4WD, short-wheel base vehicle. However, it has a notoriously steep, narrow 1-mile section above Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride that’s rated as difficult.

You’ll need plenty of off-roading and 4×4 experience to navigate the treacherous bits. Considered a right of passage by many Colorado drivers, the scenery is just as drool-worthy as the challenge

Local Tip : Do NOT attempt this drive in bad weather, including rain, as rock slides and tumbles become a serious threat. Typically it’s snow-free by the last week of July until early fall.

Enjoy the Ouray Eats

Ouray delivers great mountain cuisine that satisfies your post-adventure hunger. For upscale, head to BrickHouse 737 for New American fare. Get your burger fix at Maggie’s and satisfy your sweet tooth at Mouse’s Chocolates.

One place you can’t miss is the Pitts Again BBQ in nearby Silverton. Absolutely delicious BBQ with sides to match.

Soak in a Hot Spring

Who doesn’t love a soak in mineral-rich waters after a long day of adventuring? One of the best things to do in Ouray is enjoy some of the most fantastic Colorado hot springs . Both Ouray Hot Springs (just north of town – kid-friendly) and Orvis Hot Springs in nearby Ridgway (clothing optional) let you relax your weary muscles. For even more relaxation options check out the Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa which features accommodation, treatments, and a vapor cave.

Day Trip to Telluride

Located about an hour and half away, nearby Telluride makes for an amazing day trip any time of year. With ample things to do in Telluride, it’s easy to spend the day here.

In the summer you can enjoy the beautiful Main Street. Just outside of town you can hike to the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls, one of Colorado’s best waterfalls . Or go on a high-flying adventure along the famous Telluride via Ferrata .

Local Tip: If you’ve got some driving skills and a capable vehicle, opt to take one of the famous 4×4 roads one way (and the paved highway back) to get even more mountain action. Notable 4×4 roads to Telluride from Ouray include: Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, Black Bear Pass

During the winter months, hit the slopes and ski at the stunning Telluride Resort. Afterward, soak in a hot springs or book a delicious apres dinner at one of the many eateries in Telluride.

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy some of Telluride’s best hikes since the crowds of summer are long gone.

Learn About Mining History

Ouray, Colorado got put on the map from the intense mining activities in the area. A lot of the history is rather sad and you can still see tailings, mining trash, and uniquely colored lakes and rivers throughout the area.

Visiting some of the ghost towns – like Ironton, Animas, and others gives you a unique look into this period of history. There are countless options to check out the mines. A few fan-favorites include:

• Red Mountain Mine off of the Million Dollar Highway
• Yankee Girl Mine

Local Tip: It’s illegal and highly un-advised to enter any mining shaft. They are very unstable and prone to collapse, so enjoy from a distance.

Go on a Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour

Not surprisingly, what initially made Ouray famous was the large outcrops of gold in the nearby San Juan Mountains.

So, relics from Ouray’s past as a mining boom town can be seen everywhere. And one of the coolest ways to learn about the area’s rich mining history is through a Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour.

After all, this unique tour is based in Ouray and teaches visitors about mining history.

In fact, you can try your hand at panning for their gold before exploring the Syracuse Tunnel, a portion of the mine that was initially built in the 1920s.

Plus, this mining tour is so popular that it has been in operation for well over one hundred years. Therefore, see what all the fuss is about and enjoy one of the best things to do in Ouray today.

Take a Scenic Train Ride

The Silverton to Durango narrow-gauge railway offers up secluded mountain views from the comfort of an open-air train. The ride itself takes 1.5 hours each way and delivers a stunning day trip from Ouray. As one of the best things to do in Colorado , you’ll want to reserve your tickets ($115) well in advance.

Those that want a truly unique adventure can take the train into the Chicago Basin and backpack from the train. This adventure is one of the best backpacking routes in Colorado and can’t be missed.

Local Tip : The train is stunning in the fall when the leaves are changing!

Check Out the Wright Opera House

This 19th-century opera house isn’t just a stunning historic building, but it’s home to some pretty cool events too. From live music to theater and expert talks, you can get your culture fix at the Wright. As a well-preserved building, it’s on the national register of historic places. If you want, you can even host events here.

Visit KJ Wood Distillers

Believe it or not, this high-end liquor distiller uses fresh glacier water from the nearby mountains to create must-try spirits like Dead Drift Aged Whiskey, Berthoud Blue Vodka, and more.

Add in some local corn, barley, and Juniper from Europe and you have one of the best distilleries in the state.

So, head to the KJ Wood Tasting Room and indulge in a wide variety of drinks while enjoying the best things to do in Ouray, Colorado.

Check Out the Historic Western Hotel

This hotel, saloon, and restaurant is a historic, 3-story building that was initially opened in 1891.

So, if you decide to spend the night here then you can stay inside one of twelve rooms, or two suites, with old-world decor, stained glass windows, and more.

Plus, there’s a great on-site restaurant where you can grab a top-notch dessert on the deck before having a drink at the original bar.

Ouray Country Ranch History Museum

This incredible museum is located on a historic ranch that sits near Ridgway.

In fact, it was started in 2006 when local ranching families requested help in preserving and sharing the history behind their unique way of life.

So, visit for yourself and explore a wide variety of exhibits that detail the realities of ranching life from the 1870s all the way through until today.

And because this museum was once a ranch, you can see actual tools and artifacts on display.

Plus, admission is just $5.00 per person, making this one of the best things to do in Ouray, Colorado that is budget-friendly.

Summer Activities in Ouray, Colorado

Visiting in summer or early fall? These things to do in Ouray are perfect for soaking up that mountain sun.

Head to the Yankee Boy Basin

Yankee Boy Basin, located about an hour or so outside of town, is one of the top things to do in Ouray. You’ll need a 4WD vehicle to reach the middle parking lot for Yankee Boy Basin . If you have anything less, you’ll likely be stopped just after the gravel ends and the road gets rough.

Inside the basin, you’ll find stunning wildflower displays, a waterfall, a short alpine lake hike, and a few other notable adventures. Mt Sneffles, one of Colorado’s prettiest 14ers can be hiked from here (helmet and scrambling required).

One noteworthy hike is to hike your way to Blue Lakes Pass. The views from the top of the pass look down at nearby Telluride and offer unbelievable mountain views.

Plan for a half-day to explore the area and get there early to avoid the caravans of Jeeps.

Local Tip: Side by sides, dirt bikes, and Jeeps can navigate all the way to the end of the road. If that’s not you, don’t worry, a lot of people stop at the parking lot for the toilets and walk.

Hike the Ouray Perimeter Trail

For amazing views of this picture-perfect mountain town, be sure to hike the Ouray Perimeter Trail. You’ll get views of the town and enjoy stunning scenes of Box Canyon, and the Ouray Ice Park. It takes about 3 hours to complete and is suitable for all abilities.

The trail features four waterfalls, five bridges, and even a hidden troll. Bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and a camera!

Drive the Alpine Loop

Arguably one of the most famous off-road routes in all of Colorado, the 63-mile Alpine Loop is a must-do for OHV enthusiasts. You’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to make the journey and if you’re opting for a car, it’s best to tackle the loop over multiple days. There are plenty of designated spots to camp (no services) along the loop.

You’ll make your way from Silverton to the Animas Ghost Town, then all the way out to Lake City and back. There’s a diversity of landscapes, driving conditions, and things to scope out along the way.

The best way to drive the Alpine Loop in one day is to rent or bring a side by side. This exciting adventure takes you up and over two mountain passes – Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass. Engineer is much more technical, and if you’re in a side by side you can drive to the top of the 13,000-foot Engineer Peak.

With lots of spur trails and side stops, you will easily spend the entire day exploring the area.

Local Tip: Rent side by sides at Rocky Pirates in Silverton for easy access to the loop.

Visit the Animas Ghost Town

If you don’t want to commit to the entire Alpine Loop, a visit to the Animas Ghost Town is one of the best things to do near Ouray. This well-preserved ghost town Gives you a glimpse into the mining towns of the area. You can enter the homes and a visit is free – although you’ll be traveling down a relatively well-maintained dirt road to get there.

There are bathrooms at the ghost town. Just keep in mind, venturing further into the mountains from here will require a 4WD vehicle with high clearance.

Have an Adventure on the Ouray via Ferrata

The Ouray via Ferrata is a high-flying adventure course inside the Ouray Ice Park that is accessible during the summer months. Unlike the Telluride via Ferrata, proper via Ferrata gear is required to embark on the course. If you’ve got outdoor rock climbing experience you can rent gear from the San Juan Mountain Guides in Ouray. If not, you’ll want to hire a guide as you navigate unique obstacles by traversing steel cable bridges, iron rung ladders, and exposed cliff sides.

Go for a 4-Wheeling Adventure

Ouray and Silverton are world-famous for their 4WD roads. Some of the mountain passes are the highest in the US and offer up plenty of thrills. When it comes to things to do in Ouray, driving at least one of these famous passes is a must-do – even if that means renting a capable vehicle. A few must-drive routes include:

• Imogene Pass

Enjoy Some of Ouray’s Best Hikes

Ouray is world-famous for hiking if you’re up for the challenge. Due to the steep nature of the moutans, most of the Ouray hikes involve lots of butt-busting elevation gain. Expect a real challenge on these trails, especially if you aren’t used to the altitude. A few must-do hikes include:

• Bear Creek Trail
• Mt Sneffles
• Cheif Ouray Mine via Upper Cascade Falls

Mountain Bike

If you’re into single-track then plan a day mountain biking in nearby Ridgway. The Ridgway Area Trail system, also called RAT has mouse-inspired trail names with unique and fun obstacles for all abilities.

Be sure to check out Ratus Maximus for beginner riders or the Exterminator trail for an advanced downhill thrill.

SUP in Ridgeway

Ridgway State Park features a large reservoir that’s suitable for motorized watercraft and paddlers alike. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards at RIGS for a fun day on the water. The fee to enter the park is $10 and there aren’t many amenities on the beach, so be sure to bring things like a shade structure and chairs if you want to plan a full day at the reservoir.

Go Fly Fishing

If you’ve ever wanted to test your angling abilities, then you can fish the Uncompaghre River. Take a guided lesson from RIGS and learn how to properly cast your line in some of the best honey holes in the state.

Pro Tip: Ouray’s rivers don’t have any wildlife thanks to poison from mining activity. You’ll need to head to Ridgway for the best places to cast a line.

Hike Bear Creek National Recreation Trail

Found in Bear Creek Basin, this wilderness area features a wide array of hikes that will introduce you to the historic mining infrastructure that this amazing town is known for.

So, try iconic hikes like the 4.5-mile Grizzly Bear Mine or the intense, 8-mile Yellow Jacket Mine Trail.

After all, both trails familiarize visitors with many of the mines, buildings, and tools used for mining the region many years ago.

Visit Cascade Falls Park

Intense snowmelt from the nearby Rocky Mountains creates a series of waterfalls in Cascade Falls Park that are truly stunning to behold.

In fact, seven lovely waterfalls can be seen from Lower Cascade Falls Trail – a hike that is easy to access since the trailhead sits right near the heart of Ouray.

And while this hike isn’t long, the path can get quite steep. But, your efforts will be rewarded with beautiful panoramas of the red stone canyons and mountains that have made this region famous.

Winter Things to Do in Ouray

When it comes to things to do in Ouray, Colorado, winter is surprisingly still a happening time in this quiet mountain town. Ice climbing certainly rules the adventure sports scene, but with hot springs and stunning mountain scenery, there’s plenty to explore.

Ice Climb at the Ouray Ice Park

Ouray is an iceclimbing mecca. What makes the Ouray Ice Park so great is that beginners and experts alike can enjoy the many different routes in the park.

Beginners can hire a guide with the San Juan Mountain Guides to learn how to climb ice using picks. Top rope options exist for those that want more experience on the ice and advanced climbers have plenty of unique terrain to choose from.

Local Tip: Get into the sport at the annual Ouray Ice Festival – being held on Jan 20, 2022.

Go Cross Country Skiing

The Ouray Nordic Council created a stunning set of trails just 7 miles from Ouray in the Ironton Cross Country Skiing Area. What is full of 5th-wheel campers in the summer becomes a serene landscape perfect for cross country skiing enthusiasts. You can rent gear in town and learn how to glide over the snowy landscapes of the San Juans.

Stay at a Full-Service Hut

One popular way to stay in Ouray is to experience a backcountry hut. These off-the-grid huts nestled in the San Juan Mountains are especially attractive in winter – since the only way in is by backcountry skiing or snowshoeing.

The San Juan Hut System ranges in accommodation types, from basic huts where you pack in all of your supplies to the full-service accommodation of the Orvis Hut, which includes multi-course meals!

Local Tip : You’ll need to reserve your spot well in advance – as this popular winter pastime fills up quickly!

Take a Snowmobiling Tour

Just one hour south of Ouray you’ll find yourself at Molas Pass – a beautifully stunning area that’s well-known for its snowmobiling trails in the winter. Bring. your own sled or opt to go on a tour with the Ice Pirates in Silverton. In nearby Silverton, you can even snowmobile through town! There are several different trails to choose from catering to all abilities.

Local Tip : Be careful when riding snowmobiles as the avalanche danger in the San Juan Mountains is extreme. If you don’t have proper avalanche training, go with a guide.

Tips for Visiting Ouray, Colorado

When it comes to things to do in Ouray, Colorado you’ll have plenty of different activities to choose from. However, the last thing you want to do is enjoy these Ouray activities while looking like a total tourist. Here are a few ways to visit Ouray like a local.

Practice Leave No Trace . Always leave it better than you found it. This means picking up and packing out your trash, toilet paper, and dog poop. Follow signage and stay on trails – especially if you’re in a vehicle. The alpine tundra is a fragile place. Don’t swim in alpine lakes, pick wildflowers, or visit areas that are closed for restoration.

Acclimatize properly. Take it easy your first day in Ouray – you’re at 7,792 feet above sea level after all! Be sure to avoid alcohol your first few days in the area, take mellow hikes, and drink plenty of water.

There is no AC in town . It can get quite warm in Ouray, especially in the summer. Most mountain towns don’t have air-con, so plan on closing blinds that are in sunny windows and stay hydrated.

Plan in advance. Rentals book up quickly in and around Ouray, so plan accordingly. It’s best to book things about 3 months out (more if you visit over a holiday) to reserve your spot!

Watch the road. People tend to drive very slowly along the Million Dollar Highway – and with good reason! There are no guardrails in many places and very steep drops. If you’re driving slow, pull over for local traffic. Keep your eyes peeled too – deer, elk, and moose are commonly found in town and along the road.

Where to Eat in Ouray

One of the best things to do in Ouray is to eat lots of delicious food. And of the most iconic places to do this is Brickhouse 737.

See, this incredible local eatery sits right on Main Street and is known for home-style, farm-to-table cuisine that appeals to locals and visitors alike.

So, start your meal with P.E.I. Mussels and follow it up with the braised boneless short rib as your entree. Just don’t forget to order the Chocolate Decadence for dessert and you’ll truly have a meal to remember.

Alternatively, you could always head to Ouray Brewery for incredible gastropub fare paired with craft beer before grabbing some decadent Belgian chocolates and fresh coffee beans to take home with you from Mouse’s Chocolates & Coffee.

Where to Stay in Ouray

When it comes to where to stay in Ouray, there are a few hotel options. Keep in mind, you won’t have air con in your room, so plan accordingly on a hot day!

We loved our stay at the Alplily Inn. Since we love to cook while we are away, we enjoyed the small kitchenette. But our favorite part had to be the patio views. Just amazing!

Hotel Ouray gets high marks for hotels in the town too.

Camping in Ouray

For the amount of nature nearby, we actually found the free camping near Ouray to be difficult to find – usually requiring all-wheel drive and a little clearance to reach. However, Ironton – an area about 10 minutes outside of Ouray had ample space if you don’t mind sharing spots with big RVs. Otherwise, there is very limited camping along dirt roads leading to trailheads.

2. Learn About Ouray’s Mining Background

Ouray was originally a mining town, and if you walk to the Miner’s Heritage Park, you’ll see some old mining equipment displayed outdoors. But for a real understanding of the town’s mining background, take the Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour of the richest gold mine in the area, in operation from the late 1800s to the 1920s. One of the top attractions in town, the Ouray Alchemist Museum offers a guided tour through the history of pharmacy in the Wild West, including artifacts dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, and some as far back as 350 B.C. The storefront of the museum is also a gift shop offering antiques, jewelry, art, collectibles, T-shirts, and other unique finds — and, naturally, a pharmacy.

4. Soak In A Hot Spring

A weekend in Ouray would not be complete without experiencing the famous hot springs. Lacking the powerful sulfur odor you encounter at most hot springs, they are the number-one tourist attraction in town.

The largest and most popular hot springs pool in town, the Ouray Hot Springs , is on Main Street. In operation since 1927, and renovated in recent years, it is open year round. It features a few adults-only soaking pools with water temperatures ranging from 75 to 106 degrees, waterfalls, lap lanes, and a climbing and diving platform.

But if you prefer more secluded hot springs, a few resorts open their premises to non-guests. These include the Wiesbaden and the Twin Peaks Lodge , among others.

5. Stroll By The River

After a soak in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, you can take a walk along the river, with a trail starting at the pool parking lot. The Uncompahgre River Walk Loop is a packed-gravel, wheelchair-accessible 2-mile loop. Besides the river, it also offers views of Gold Hill, with old mine buildings and waterfalls. You’ll also find benches and fitness stations.

Pro Tip: Try this trail first, while you are still getting used to the elevation. Even though it’s in a valley, Ouray is at an elevation of almost 8,000 feet, and you might experience altitude sickness, especially if you try to take a strenuous hike in the surrounding San Juan Mountains. If you are prone to altitude sickness, take it slow and give yourself time to adjust to the environment before hitting the trail.

6. Head Up To Cascade Falls

If you look up the mountain, you can see Cascade Falls , visible from almost any part of town. You can hike up to it on a short but steep trail through a gorgeous wooded area. Just drive up to the end of 8th Avenue, walk up the steps, and follow the trail. Look out through the trees for a picturesque view of the town, and then spend some time at the waterfalls.

Pro Tip: Though short, the trail is steep, and if you are not used to the elevation, you might have trouble with it. Hike this trail after you get acclimated to the elevation, and you’ll find it easier.

7. Hike The Ouray Perimeter Trail

The 6-mile-long Ouray Perimeter Trail is a must-hike trail. As its name suggests, it circles the town, offering a unique experience through varied terrain and gorgeous scenery.

However, at an altitude of around 8,000 feet, Ouray perimeter trail gets steep in some parts and not an easy trail to hike. Take it slow and hike only parts of it at a time.

Since it intersects the Cascades Falls Trail, you can take a brief side trip on it from there. Or take it from the trailhead at the Ouray Visitor Center or from a few other access points around town.

8. Visit Box Canyon Falls

You can’t leave Ouray without a visit to Box Cañon Falls , one of the town’s most famous tourist destinations. A developed attraction, the park showcases an 85-foot-tall waterfall in a narrow canyon, surrounded by towering rocks. You can access the Box Canyon Falls both from above and below. Stop at the visitor center to learn about the geology, history, flora, and fauna of the Box Canyon Falls region, and then hike one of the interpretive trails.

To get to Box Canyon Falls, follow the road out of town for half a mile, and then turn onto Box Canyon Road. You’ll reach the visitor center in about half a mile. You can also access it from town, from the west end of 3rd Street.

9. Drive The Million Dollar Highway

Nestled in southwest Colorado, Ouray marks the starting (or ending) point of the dramatic Million Dollar Highway through the San Juan Mountains. This stretch of road is especially beautiful in the fall, with the surrounding mountaintops showcasing their brightest colors.

As you climb out of Ouray along the Million Dollar Highway, you can hear the faint sounds of thousands of gallons of gushing water. You're listening to Box Canyon Falls, one of the main things to see when visiting Ouray.

True to its nickname as the "Switzerland of America," you can expect to find nothing but epic mountains and wilderness surrounding Ouray. The San Juan Mountains have some of the best hiking in Colorado, and Ouray is a great spot from which to make your home base.

You can start easy, with something as simple as the Box Canyon Falls trail , or you can really push it to the extreme with something like Mt. Sneffels . This 14,158-foot peak features a seven-mile trail that is one of the most challenging in the region due to its steep incline and potential for falling rocks. In fact, it's often suggested that you wear helmets while on this hike. Once you get to the top, however, the views of the Uncompahgre National Forest are simply astounding.

Other trail options include hiking to Lower, Middle, and Upper Blue Lakes , which is a total of nine miles of pure San Juan alpine glory. Think jewel-toned lakes and snowcapped peaks.

A must is the Perimeter Trail , which is a six-mile loop that goes around the entire town.

The charm of downtown Ouray is exactly what travelers are looking for when they seek out remote mountain towns in the Colorado Rockies. A historic Main Street lined with Victorian facades cuts through the valley, surrounded on either end by towering peaks.

If you feel like a scenic drive, Ouray has many of them. But if you want to take a scenic drive to the next level, then you'll want to set out on the road to visit Animas Forks. This ghost town is located at 11,200 feet in the San Juan Mountains, about two hours from Ouray.

That may seem like a long way to go just to visit a ghost town, but the drive is all part of the adventure. In fact, it's highly recommended to use a high-clearance 4WD vehicle in order to make it all the way to the town.

Animas Forks was founded in 1873 by prospectors. Three years later, it was humming with activity, with 30 cabins, as well as a hotel, post office, a store, and a population of about 450 people.

To get there today, you can access it via the Alpine Loop, which is an unpaved road that runs for 65 miles from Lake City to Ouray and Silverton. The road is better accessed during the summer months, but a four-wheel drive car is strongly recommended year-round. The best part about visiting is that you can step inside the old buildings and truly get a glimpse of what frontier life was like in the unforgiving mountain conditions.

Like any good Colorado mountain town, Ouray has mountains, waterfalls, ice parks, and hiking trails. But the historic village takes it one step further with natural mineral hot springs. The natural mineral pools bubble up from the Box Canyon along the Uncompahgre River and range in temperature from 80 to 150 degrees, making them a welcome treat in the frosty winter season.

The native Ute tribe believed the waters to be healing, calling them "Miracle Waters." Today that tradition continues with an indoor swimming pool and bathhouse on the outskirts of town. The rich gold deposits that are embedded within the San Juan Mountains helped put Ouray on the map. Remnants of the booming mining industry that thrived out of Ouray and other nearby towns can be found scattered all over the mountains and canyons.

One of the best ways to get in touch with this history is to embark on a mine tour. The Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour, which operates out of Ouray, takes visitors into the depths of an old mine. Much more than a guided history lesson, the mine tour even lets visitors pan for their own gold. And if you find any, it is yours to keep.

For a century, Bachelor Syracuse Mine was one of the most profitable mines in the region, earning its three owners $250,000 each in the first few years. In today's currency that would be more than $4 million per person. As part of the tour, visitors explore the tunnel that was created in the 1920s to access the mine from below. It is called the Syracuse Tunnel, and this is the portion of the mine that is open to the public.

Tucked in the shadow of the San Juan Mountains within the Uncompahgre National Forest is Yankee Boy Basin. It will be difficult to find a spot more beautiful in the summer in Ouray than the basin, which is carpeted in green and bursting with wildflowers.

In addition to the explosion of color, the basin is also home to plunging waterfalls, alpine scenery, and remnants of the area's mining past, all surrounded by the sheer walls of a steep canyon.

Bear in mind that Yankee Boy Basin is above the timberline, and that the road needed to get here cannot be accessed by low clearance vehicles. This is one of the wilder, more remote sections of mountain that is still accessible by road. This is also where you'll go to reach Mt. Sneffels trailhead to scale the 14,000-foot peak.

This world-famous ski town was also once a former mining town, and is surrounded on all sides by towering peaks, and webbed with scenic drives and hiking trails. The best skiing in Colorado can be found on the slopes of Telluride, as well as a plethora of campgrounds and hiking trails for the summer season.

Telluride hosts spectacular annual events, as well, like the Telluride Film Festival. The park in the center of town is known for its live music and festivals, and the historic streets are always brimming with people hopping from restaurant to restaurant, gallery to boutique, and in and out of the charming historic hotels.

Colorado was built for adrenaline junkies, but there is adventure, and then there is Black Bear Pass. One of the most challenging drives in the country, Black Bear Pass is a jeep trail that starts at 11,018 feet, at the summit of Red Mountain Pass near Ouray, peaking at nearly 13,000 feet over Telluride.

Not for the faint of heart, and only for experienced drivers with an appropriate 4WD vehicle, the notorious pass descends into a series of hairpin switchbacks, leading past the famous Bridal Veil Falls , which is the highest waterfall in Colorado .

Truth be told, the majority of the road is relatively moderate. But for a mile-long stretch above the falls, the ride is one of the slowest going because of how treacherous it is. Still, it offers some of the most breathtaking and rarely seen scenery in this part of the state and will be one of the more memorable things you do in Ouray.

For 25 glorious miles , the Million Dollar Highway rises out of Ouray and cuts across treacherous mountain roads to reach the town of Silverton . While it may be one of the most challenging drives in the country, it is certainly one of the most beautiful, as well.

The Million Dollar Highway was built in the 1880s and is today part of the San Juan Skyway, which connects Durango to Ridgway. The section between Silverton and Ouray is called the Million Dollar Highway, climbing up and over Red Mountain Pass.

Keep in mind that summer is the best time to drive the road, when weather is hardly a concern. During colder months, the road can be unpredictable and quite treacherous. But for summer drivers, the rewards far outweigh the risks, especially with unparalleled views of the San Juan Mountains in every direction.

Known as the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray, Colorado is a beautiful mountain town surrounded by rugged canyons and the unparalleled beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Located in Southwestern Colorado, Ouray is famous for its hot springs, outdoor activities, and its historic charming downtown.

From off-roading adventures to deep soaks in the area’s hot springs, here are your things to do in Ouray .

Year-round Activities

No matter what time of year you plan to visit Ouray, there is an abundance of activities that await the ever-curious. Begin your days adventuring to majestic waterfalls and end them with a relaxing soak in one of the town’s many hot springs. Here are our top year-round activities to enjoy in Ouray.

• Hot Springs

One of the primary draws of Ouray is the five famous sulfur-free hot springs that are situated in the city. A perfect way to end a day of hiking, skiing, or just exploring the town, no visit to Ouray is complete without a soak in a hot spring pool.

Ouray Hot Springs is the most famous of the hot spring areas in the region. Situated in a valley surrounded by tall mountain peaks, the five hot spring pools that make up the springs are complemented by water slides, a playground, and even a climbing wall, making this a great activity for the whole family.

Box Canyon Falls Park

Made up of three main trails, Box Canyon Falls Park offers an easy opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Canyon Creek and the eighty-five-foot waterfall that gives the park its name. Situated in a narrow canyon surrounded by hundred-foot walls, the waterfall is easily accessed from the Falls Trail, a short, five hundred foot walk into the canyon.

For those hoping for a longer hike, consider the High Bridge Trail, which makes its way to the top of the canyon and crosses a bridge, providing fantastic views of the falls throughout. In addition to the waterfall, the park features a sizeable picnic area as well as a visitor center that is closed during the winter.

Ouray Alchemist Museum

Ouray Alchemist Museum is a unique museum situated in downtown Ouray. Displaying a large collection of pharmaceuticals that showcase the history of medicine in Colorado, this museum is a great stop for all visitors interested in the rich history of the Frontier era of Colorado. Some of the artifacts date as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries and the museum features a large collection of patent medicine with original artworks.

For visitors searching for accommodations in Ouray, the Ouray Alchemist Museum also has a large penthouse suite situated above the museum that is available for short-term rentals year-round.

Ouray County Museum

Housed in a Miners’ Hospital that first opened in 1887, the Ouray County Museum houses a fantastic collection of artifacts that showcase the history of Ouray and the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Spanning twenty-seven rooms, the County Museum displays significant artifacts on mining, ranching, and railroading. Additionally, the museum features a variety of exhibits detailing daily life in Ouray as well as recreations of cabins and a barn.

Whether it’s a hot summer afternoon or a cold, blustery winter evening, spending time at one of Ouray’s four local breweries is a great way to pass the time. Wright Opera House

With a history dating back to the nineteenth century, Wright Opera House is a beautiful historic building situated in downtown Ouray, Colorado. Additionally, the building is home to a variety of talks and lectures from local experts.

Summer Activities

Scenic Drive along San Juan Skyway/Million Dollar Highway

The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is a 235-mile loop that winds through the beautiful San Juan mountains in Colorado. Granted the prestigious title of National Scenic Byway, the San Juan Skyway is arguably the best and easiest way to take in the grand beauty of the San Juan mountains.

From Ouray, visitors have access to two of the great stretches of the Skyway. Heading south from Ouray on the Skyway lies the Million Dollar Highway , aptly named both for its high cost to create and for the beautiful views it passes by.

It eventually leads to Silverton after crossing Red Mountain Pass at 11,075 feet, and heading north leads to Telluride. Either way, this scenic drive is a great summer activity for exploring the natural beauty that surrounds Ouray.

Hiking Yankee Boy Basin

Yankee Boy Basin, surrounded by some of the San Juan’s most magnificent peaks, is situated right outside of Ouray in the Uncompahgre National Forest . Besides the massive peaks, including Mount Sneffels, one of Colorado’s famous 14ers, Yankee Boy Basin is a fantastic area for viewing many of Colorado’s summer wildflowers like the state’s flower, the Columbine.

To reach the basin, medium or high-clearance vehicles are required, and four-wheel drive is required to reach the Mount Sneffels trailhead. From Yankee Boy Basin, many visitors choose to summit Mount Sneffels after enjoying the wildflowers and views afforded by the basin.

Biking Ridgway Area Trail System

Set outside of Ouray near the town of Ridgway on the Ridgway Area Trail System, also known as RAT. It is a system of single-track mountain biking trails totaling over thirty miles. With easy access from Ouray and Ridgway , bikers of all levels are sure to find a trail that is fun and challenging within the system.

The main trail to access the area is known as “The big cheese,” and all of the trails feature rat-inspired names thanks to the humourous abbreviation given to the RAT system . Ultimately, whether rushing down the expert level “exterminator” trail or cruising down the beginner-friendly “Rattus Maximus,” a visit to the RAT is a great way to spend a summer day near Ouray.

Ouray Perimeter Trail

The Ouray Perimeter Trail is a unique six-mile trail that follows the outline of the city. There are numerous places to access the trail, so there is no need to commit to the full trail in order to experience it. The Ouray Perimeter Trail features four separate waterfalls and countless beautiful views, so a summer hike on this local trail is sure to be rewarding.

Throughout the approximately six miles, the trail gains 1,600 feet in elevation, topping out at 8,500 feet above sea-level at its highest point. From here, the views of the San Juans are magical. Since this trail never strays far from the city limits, there are many bail-out points, making this a great trail for beginner hikers looking to test their legs on a six-mile hike.

Ouray Via Ferrata

Climbing and winding along the cliffs of the Uncompahgre Gorge, the Ouray Via Ferrata is a fantastic and safe way to experience the beauty of the Gorge. Spanning approximately 0.8 miles through the Gorge, this Via Ferrata is free to use and open to the public, making it a great choice for the summer or fall visitor to Ouray.

The route is composed of rock ledges, two bridges, and even some traditional European rungs that give Via Ferratas their name. Proper equipment is required, including a climbing harness and helmet. Though the route is only 0.8 miles in length, it generally takes around four hours to complete thanks to the fairly difficult, 4b rated climbing that is encountered on the trip.

4×4 and OHV driving on the Alpine Loop

The Alpine Loop , which is one of Colorado’s 26 scenic and historic byways, is a 63-mile long mountain track that connects the towns of Lake City, Ouray, and Silverton. Generally clear of snow from June-September, this off-road adventure requires high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles to tackle the often rough terrain.

Visitors who set off to conquer this all-day adventure are rewarded by beautiful views atop Engineer and Cinnamon Pass, both of which are over 12,000 feet in elevation. Besides the views, the route passes through a number of abandoned ghost towns including Animas Forks and Capitol City. Despite the vehicle requirements, the Alpine Loop is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the San Juans.

Winter Activities

Winter in Ouray brings about stunning snow-capped mountain peaks, picturesque Maint Street scenes, and several outdoor activities such as ice climbing. Be sure to add these things to do in Ouray during the winter to your travel itinerary.

Ouray Ice Park

Located within walking distance of downtown Ouray is the Ouray Ice Park , an expansive, man-made ice climbing park featuring over 100 ice climbs. Free to use and open to the public, this world-class park set in the beautiful Uncompahgre Gorge transforms into an icy wonderland due to thoughtfully placed irrigation pipes and over a hundred showerheads that send water into the gorge. Offering over three miles of vertical climbing terrain, ice climbers of all levels are sure to find a route that suits them perfectly.

Every year in January, ice climbers from all over the world gather for the Ouray Ice Festival , a three-day event featuring countless climbing clinics, competitions, and even dance parties. Whether visiting as a spectator or a participant, a visit to Ouray during the Ice Festival is a great winter vacation for the adventurous traveler.

Skiing and sledding adventures

Hit the slopes with Ouray’s two skiing and sledding areas, Lee’s Ski Hil l and Vinegar Hill. Lee’s Ski Hill is a small ski area located in town that features rope-tow and 75 feet of vertical slope. The ski hill is open from mid-December until the end of February or mid-March, depending on snow levels.

Not your typical sledding hill, the Vinegar Hill sledding area is actually a closed-off street block between 5th and 6th Avenues. Closed to vehicles from mid-December to early March, kids, and adults young at heart can bring their sleds and saucers to enjoy a favorite winter pastime.

Ouray Nordic Council Cross Country Ski Trails

As is expected with a location in the middle of the San Juan Mountains, Ouray is a great basecamp for skiing in the local area. Maintained and developed by the Ouray County Nordic Council , the cross-country ski areas near Ouray are one of the best ways to experience the beauty that surrounds Ouray during the winter.

Situated just seven miles south of Ouray lies the Ironton Park Cross-Country Ski Area . From here, visitors can ski one mile to the abandoned ghost town of Ironton before continuing east towards Red Mountain. An inviting place for skiers and historians alike, this trail is a great way to experience Colorado in winter while also getting a sense of the region’s rich history.

Ouray has been on my bucket list for years but it’s definitely a haul from Denver at just at six hours away. We made the yearly pilgrimage to Telluride for Bluegrass but never got to check out the other towns. Years ago I did a collaboration with Toyota where we drove the Million Dollar Highway from Durango to Silverton to Ouray and on to Telluride. Since we did it in a day we ran out of time to stop in Ouray. Last year for our 4th of July adventure Clay and I decided to do a similar road trip Telluride>Durango>Ouray and spend a few days exploring Ouray.

We spent the 4th of July in Telluride – the parade is so fun! Full guide to Telluride here . Then camped at a HipCamp site outside the town of Rico . From our site, you could walk along the river to town where we ate and watch the fireworks. There are only two restaurants in town, and the fish tacos at The Rico Bar were fire! We were the only out of towners at the bar but we made friends! The next day we continued on to Durango where we stopped for lunch on the balcony of Fired Up Pizza .

Our plan was to find camping on the way to Ouray but we were out of luck at 5 locks and ended up booking the LAST room in town at the Twin Peaks Lodge . We spent a pretty penny on the 2 bedroom condo but we had a place to sleep!

The next night we moved into our previously booked hotel in Ouray at the Rivers Edge Motel . It was a very small and basic room, but that’s really all we needed. The hotel is right on the river with some benches and we enjoyed sitting in that area.

The town is so drop-dead gorgeous and we spent most the day at the Ouray Hot Springs. The town Hot Springs are open till 10 pm so we spent the day moving between pools and swimming, then went to dinner and headed back for a sunset soak.

What To Do in Ouray

Ouray is known as the Switzerland of Colorado and once you see it you will be like “Yep, totally get that” Its the architecture but also the sheer magnitude of the mountains. Ouray is known for a few things, ice climbing in winter, jeep/4×4 ride and trails and hot springs!

Ouray Hot Springs – A number of the hotel’s resorts have their own hot springs but Ouray Hot Springs are where it’s at. The Hot Spring facility is gorgeous and so nice after the recent multi-million dollar renovation. There are a number of pools at different temperatures, adults-only section, a swimming pool and activity pool with obstacles course oh and a slide! I feel like the pricing was $7-12 for a full day and we 100% got our money worth there. Oh and all of the hot springs in Ouray are Sulfer free so no weird smell!

Outside of the Town Hot Springs are a giant park with a baseball field! Perfect place to take the family to play or have a picnic. As you can see its gorgeous at sunset.

Hike – There are a number of hikes around town and a short drive away. Check our All Trails for hike recommendations. The Perimeter Loop Trail goes around the town that we were planning to do but opted to spend most of the day at the hot springs. We did however hike up to the Lower Cascade Falls in town. You can walk from town or drive up pretty close. It’s not a “hard” hike but its very vertical so just take time and some deep breaths to get up with the quick altitude change!

Box Canyon Falls Park – We were excited to go explore this area but unfortunately, you can’t bring dogs and we had the dogs with us. So hoping to explore this area next time! It’s $5 per person to enter an walk across the bridge near the Box Canyon Sign – more info here .

Drives & 4×4 – The Million Dollar Highway is a beautiful drive from Ouray to Durango (and back) I did the drive a few years ago during peak fall colors and it was incredible. Read my full post about it here. Jeeping in the area is also very popular and there are a number of outfitters that you can rent from, find more information here .

Kayak Molas Lake – On our way to Ouray, we stopped at Molas Lake for some Kayaking. This is a private campground on a gorgeous lake. I highly recommend making a pit stop here. We would love to go back for a weekend and just stay here! This drive will take you through Silverthorn too!

Where to Eat in Ouray

Our dinner out was Goldbelt Bar was meh… but the patio was nice, which is really why we chose it! We originally planned to eat at Colorado Boy (brewery and artisan pizza) but it was like their first weekend open and they had a big wait. For breakfast, we stopped in The Goods before heading out and it was great. We will defiantly have to try more spots next time we visit.

In its historic beginnings, Ouray was home to miners seeking out gold and silver in the surrounding mountains. Today, tourism is Ouray's primary industry, but most of the buildings from its late 19th century origins still stand. The entire town is registered as a National Historic District.

The massive, 13,000-foot tall peaks that almost entirely ring Ouray is part of the tourist draw. Ouray itself is tucked at a narrow end of a valley. Called "the Switzerland of America" because of this unique positioning, Ouray is perhaps surprisingly not a ski town at all, but an ice town. Ouray is home to the Ouray Ice Park, the first artificial ice climbing park worldwide. Visitors can climb dozens of frozen waterfalls, which range from 80 to 200 feet in height.

In the summer, the mountains are blanketed with wildflowers and attract hikers and especially off-roaders. Rough, four-wheel-drive-only roads take visitors through the mountains to Telluride or the beautiful Yankee Boy Basin. Of course, the many historic buildings, including the Beaumont Hotel and Wright's Opera House, are open year-round, as is the unique Ouray Hot Springs swimming pool.

Ouray is about 35 miles south of Montrose via US 550. Without four-wheel-drive, Telluride is an hour and a half away via a loop around the mountains.

Is Ouray, Colorado Worth Visiting?

Ouray, Colorado is the official Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado. Located in southwestern Colorado, Ouray attracts thousands of visitors every year who are in search of adventurous experiences. There are so many things to do year-round, so regardless of season or reason, Ouray is the perfect versatile destination. This city is great for weekend getaways, honeymoons, and summer family vacations, so get started on planning your trip to Ouray!

How Is Ouray Pronounced?

This is usually the first of many questions Ouray visitors ask. Ouray is pronounced “Yoo-ray”. Locals suggest you think of the word “Hooray” and add a “Y” to the beginning of the word to properly pronounce Ouray.

Facts & History

The town of Ouray is tucked away in a canyon at the base of the San Juan Mountains. From the town’s center, you’ll see mountains, parks, historical landmarks, centuries-old ghost towns, hot springs, quaint shops, and local restaurants all within walking distance.

The unique topography of the San Juan Mountains are due to centuries of lava-formed craters, rock formations, and ice storms. The valleys that were created due to these natural changes of the earth’s layers gave birth to near-perfect conditions for the mining of ore. In fact, Ouray’s section of the San Juan range is the most highly mineralized section in the state of Colorado.

While this hotspot for ore attracted excavators during the Gold Rush, humans had already discovered Ouray back in the Ice Age. Hunter-gatherers and members of the Tabeguache Ute tribe discovered Ouray and settled there for the abundant hot water springs. The Ute stayed in Ouray throughout the 1700s to serve as guides for the ever-growing number of visitors seeking expeditions. The hiking trails that are open to visitors today are actually the very trails that the Ute forged for their expeditions. In the 1800s, Spanish explorers arrived and officially named the mountain range “San Juan”. Then, miners who were in search of silver and gold, flooded Ouray in the late 1800s.

What Is Ouray, Colorado Known For?

Ouray is often referred to as the “Switzerland of America” because it’s basically a mecca for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. Skiers and snowboarders flock to Ouray every winter to take advantage of their slopes, and avid climbers cross mountains off their bucket lists during the summer. Aside from its rich history found in the great amount of mineral ore deposits, Ouray is probably most known for its hot springs. Ouray’s sulfur-free hot springs are a natural result of fissures in the earth’s crust combined with the nearby Uncompahgre River. The combination of pressure and heat in these waters created clean and odorless hot springs, which is very rare.

The hot springs were one of the many reasons the Ute decided to settle there, and they quickly found that regular trips to these waters healed aches and ailments of all kinds; they aptly named the hot springs “Miracle Waters”.

The list of things to do in Ouray is seemingly endless; ORV (off-road-vehicle) excursions, biking, climbing, hiking, fishing, seeing the historical sights, visiting the hot springs, and boating is a small section of Ouray’s offerings. And that’s not including winter activities!

Many of the businesses in Ouray organize special trips for groups who are seeking very specific activities like ORV excursions or climbing expeditions. This is a fun way to see the historical parts of Ourway in an active way.

The nearby San Juan Mountains offer the perfect climbing, hiking, and horseback riding experiences. You can plan your trip by selecting your desired trails which are designed with specific sights in mind. For example, you can hike a trail that passes by some of the hot springs or climb a section of the San Juan range that’s perfect for night sky viewing after you set up camp.

Another great spot to visit is the Box Canyon and Waterfalls, which is Ouray’s natural wonder. The park is a short drive from downtown Ouray, but consider taking the long way so you can see some of the surrounding ghost towns, too.

Hotels and motels are located closer to the downtown area while cabins and bed and breakfasts can be found in the surrounding rural parts of the county. we have work camped and that area two different Summers. It is one of the most beautiful places in America. Many of the merchants are so friendly and welcoming. I would go every summer if I had the opportunity. As for the million dollar Highway oh, it is not dangerous if you drive safely. There are plenty of places to pull over to take pictures.

Can you get to Ouray from Pagosa Sorings without traveling on the million dollar highway. It really frightens me

Normally you could back track to 149 to lake city then up to 50. But there is a bridge out on 50 that may cause traffic issues.

You could also take 160 west to mancos then cut up county roads to 145 and go up over lizard head pass.

Still mountain driving but not as scary as the million dollar.

A lot of us locals, including the schools, go into UT to avoid the million dollar hwy. Another option is to go to Mancos and then take Hwy 145 over Lizard Head pass. There are some drop offs but it's not as scary as 550 and the views are wonderful. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g28927-i252-k9570083-San_Juan_skyway_hwy_145_or_550-Colorado.html might be of some help.

Ouray County Plaindealer: The Ouray Police Department has been cleared in a complaint alleging some of its officers used excessive force against a juvenile last year. But the substance and details of the complaint and the investigation report remain secret because city officials claim they can withhold them because it involved a juvenile who completed a diversion program and had the records expunged from the court system.

The majority of the documents – a 10-page citizen complaint filed Feb. 19 and a 9-page internal investigation report – have been blacked out by city officials who claim the officers accused of misconduct cannot be identified and the allegations against them are also protected.

The city said anyone connected to the juvenile’s arrest and details of the complaint and the investigation must not be released because of laws protecting juveniles in the criminal justice system, and the fact that the juvenile court records were destroyed.

Colorado’s 10 best dinosaur destinations, from museums to track sites and quarries

Colorado could come across as dinosaur-obsessed — and with good reason.

The Rocky Mountain West has unparalleled access to artifacts from the dinosaur age because the uplift that formed the mountains unearthed layers of rock that were buried for millennia prior, said Bruce Schumacher, senior paleontologist with the U.S. Forest Service.

That’s why when development companies start digging on new projects, they often stumble across dino remains . Even the Colorado Rockies’ triceratops mascot, Dinger, was inspired by fossil fragments found during the construction of Coors Field.

Because of that, the state boasts a robust paleontology community which, in turn, means many fossils end up on display locally. All the better for would-be dinosaur hunters.

Here are 10 places across Colorado where you can walk literally in the footsteps of long necks, see rare discoveries and even join an excavation.

Where to walk amongst the dinosaurs

Dinosaur ridge (morrison).

One of Colorado’s most iconic dinosaur locales is also one of its most easily accessible. Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison is a quick detour off I-70 and replete with fossils and tracks that are visible from a paved, two-mile road. The site includes a visitors’ center with indoor exhibit halls, kid-friendly digging areas and a gift shop. Those looking for more adventure can traverse the Triceratops Trail, a 1.5-mile gravel path that starts in Golden and provides access to a rare Tyrannosaurus Rex footprint. Be aware that Dinosaur Ridge is immensely popular, welcoming about 250,000 visitors per year. Guided tours are available in both areas. Free; more information at dinoridge.org .

Dinosaur National Monument (Dinosaur)

The town of Dinosaur adopted its name in 1966 as a harbinger of its greatest asset, the Dinosaur National Monument. The 210,000-acre monument encompasses desert canyons in both Colorado and Utah where visitors can recreate and get a prehistory lesson. The most famous attraction is the Quarry Exhibit Hall, located in Utah, which features a vertical rock wall where 1,500 dino bones have been carefully excavated so they are visible as they would be at an active dig. While there aren’t fossils on the Colorado side of the monument, there are numerous places to camp, hike, raft, see petroglyphs and take a scenic, dinosaur-inspired drive. Picket Wire Canyonlands (La Junta)

Southeastern Colorado is home to North America’s largest tracksite, which features more than 1,900 prints representing more than 130 different dinosaurs. Nestled deep within the Picket Wire Canyonlands (part of the Comanche National Grasslands near La Junta and Trinidad), hikers need to trek more than 11 miles round trip on foot to visit Dinosaur Lake in the remote Purgatoire River valley. But folks say it’s worth it to see the thousands of tracks from herbivorous sauropods, carnivorous theropods on two legs, and even tracks from what experts believe to be a familial herd of dinosaurs . Rabbit Valley Trail Through Time (Mack)

If you’ve ever wanted to see a working quarry, the town of Mack, about 30 miles west of Grand Junction, is the place. The Rabbit Valley Trail Through Time is a 1.5-mile walkable loop that skirts a quarry where excavators have found thousands of bones from Jurassic-period giants like Camarasaurus and Allosaurus. West Gold Hill Dinosaur Tracksite (Ouray)

One of the world’s most intriguing dinosaur tracksites recently became part of the public domain. The West Gold Hill Tracksite in Ouray is unique because of both its size and pattern, which show a sauropod taking 134 consecutive steps and making a 270-degree turn. The tracksite has long been an open secret among locals, but since the U.S. Forest Service acquired the land where it resides in April, the agency is now prompting its whereabouts. Where to see bones at their best

Dinosaur Journey Museum (Fruita)

Located in Fruita, about two hours south of the Dinosaur National Monument, the Dinosaur Journey Museum includes an exhibit hall with Jurassic-period fossils, life-size skeletal recreations, and animatronic dinosaurs including a T. Rex. Of particular note on display is a species called Fruitadens, one of the smallest non-bird dinosaurs ever discovered named for the town of Fruita where scientists found the first fossils. Denver Museum of Nature and Science (Denver)

There’s lots to explore at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, but dinosaur lovers will want to start on the building’s third level where skeletons tower over the exhibit hall and immerse visitors in the dinosaur age. Exhibits cover the ages pre- and post-dinosaurs, so patrons can learn about ancient plants, reptiles and mammals, and how the climate has evolved. There are also fossils guests can touch and an Earth Sciences Lab where volunteers prepare fossils for onsite displays. Tickets cost $24.95 for adults and $19.95 for kids, with additional fees for access to additional attractions like the planetarium; more information at dmns.org .

Morrison Natural History Museum (Morrison)

Located five miles from the show-stopping Dinosaur Ridge, the Morrison Natural History Museum contextualizes Colorado’s role in the dinosaur age with fossil displays, history through the Ice Age, and hands-on exhibits. The museum, located in a refurbished cabin, is fueled by ongoing research that it does in-house as a nonprofit organization. It allows non-professionals to join excavations, too. The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center (Woodland Park)

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center near Colorado Springs is something of a showroom for its parent company, Triebold Paleontology, Inc. , which has been collecting fossils since 1989. Its founder Mike Triebold is said to have discovered several “firsts” in the field, such as the first complete and intact skeleton of Protosphyraena perniciosa , a prehistoric fish. In 2022, the Triebold Paleontology team discovered a juvenile T. Rex and many of the bones they have so far are on display, including shoulder bones and vertebrae. The bones indicate the animal was injured while alive and some also have gnaw marks on them from after it was deceased. At the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience in Cañon City, visitors don’t get to just look at fossils and relics, they also get to play among them. In addition to a 10,000-square-foot museum, the venue includes a digging area for kids to excavate their own treasures, a “wild walk” that takes patrons through a landscape dotted with life-size animatronic dinos, and two ropes courses that offer aerial views of all of the above plus the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Royal Gorge Bridge. The venue is near an active quarry called the Garden Park Fossil Area , the site of the Bone Wars in the 19th century , so you could swing by both places on one trip. CDOT crews perform critical culvert upgrades on US 550 Red Mountain Pass next week

Southwest Colorado  — On Monday, June 10, the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin month-long operations to replace several culverts on US Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray. June 10 through 13, motorists can expect alternating traffic and brief 15-minute delays at several stream crossings between Silverton and Ironton, Mile Points 71 and 81.

Maintenance crews will replace existing metal culverts with durable Polyethylene culverts made to withstand corrosive elements and sustain high volumes of debris flow. Work is weather permitting.

CDOT urges motorists to slow down and watch for flaggers, work crews and heavy equipment.

Traffic Impacts

Daytime work hours range from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

• Motorists should plan for 10 to 15 minute delays and should allow for extra travel time
• Expect one-lane alternating traffic guided by signs, cones and flagging personnel
• A speed reduction will be enforced through the work zones
