Even though they may be a bit too big to fit in your case and take back home, it’s still fun to wander around and admire them. For small decorations, like dried seasonal flowers and fresh wreaths, there’s the London Florist.

To top everything off, you’ll also find a helter-skelter, visits from Santa, family-friendly games, and all kinds of sophisticated gifts.

Throughout December, the market dedicates one night each week to the festive season and hosts one of the most spectacular Christmas markets in London.

Thanks to its location, away from the center of the city, Greenwich Christmas Market is one of the quieter and more low-key markets on this list. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. On the contrary, this market is the perfect place to go if you want to support local creators and get into the festive spirit without having to deal with lines and crowds.

Best Christmas Markets in London for Shopping: Greenwich Christmas Market

The market is located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is pretty special on its own. But decorate it with oversized snowmen, full wreaths, tall trees, twinkling lights, and red ribbons, and the market transforms itself into an excellent place to shop for stocking fillers or grab something festive to eat.

Buy a cup of steaming mulled wine and sip as you browse through stalls selling everything from quirky photographs and scented candles to vegan brownies and spicy hot sauce.

12. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Festive Christmas Markets in London: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

The biggest and most popular Christmas market in London is easily the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland . This giant market covers almost all of Hyde Park and is bursting with so many things to see and do that you’ll want to return again and again!

The huge ice skating rink is one of our favorite parts of Winter Wonderland. It’s the biggest one in the UK and is just as good for a fun family day out as it is for a romantic experience. If you’re traveling with your children, you’ll love the mini penguins kids can use to help them skate. Or, if you’re visiting as a couple, you’ll find the twinkling lights and live music add an intimate atmosphere.

Must Visit London Christmas Markets: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

When you’re in the mood for something to eat, head to the Bavarian Village, where you’ll find typical wooden huts dishing up all kinds of warming German eats. If you feel like something else, there are plenty of other stalls dishing up international street eats.

There’s a number of great spots to grab a drink. We recommend buying some hot cocoa or sparkling prosecco and enjoying it in the Carousel Bar. It gently spins around while you drink!

With amazing circus shows, a giant observation wheel, a magical ice kingdom, a fun-filled Santa Land, and an ice slide, you’ll never be stuck for what to do here.

And there you have it! These are our picks for the best Christmas markets in London. Which ones are you going to visit?

Looking for the best Christmas markets in London? You’ve come to the right place!

Is there anything more magical than celebrating Christmas in London? As a long-time fan of the Christmas film “Love, Actually”, when I moved to London I was most looking forward to all the beauty of the festive season.

Along with incredible light displays in the streets and some of the most magical window displays in the shops, London also hosts MANY epic Christmas markets!

So, from the wonders of Hyde Park Winter Wonderland to the magic of the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre, here are our top picks for London’s best Christmas markets:

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Arguably the biggest and best, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is much more than just a market – although there are more than 100 market stalls for Christmas gift shopping.

Hyde Park itself is huge, and most of it is taken over by the Winter Wonderland from mid-November until early January. As well as the traditional wooden chalet type stalls (housed in the Bavarian Village), there are also live shows, numerous rides, an ice-skating rink and lots of places to get delicious food or drink.

It’s ideal for kids as well as adults, with some really cool bars including the slowly spinning carousel bar, Thor’s tipi inspired by the Sami people of Lapland and an ice bar!

Covent Garden Christmas Village

You’ve probably seen photos from Covent Garden’s Christmas Village because every year there’s a new festive display that everyone wants shots of for their Instagram! A giant Christmas tree also makes an appearance every year, along with some Christmassy Lego displays.

As well as all the gorgeous decorations, the covered interior of Covent Garden becomes filled with festive stalls during the Christmas period. A traditional Christmas village pops up too, complete with mini dining pods in the shape of Christmas baubles!

The streets around Covent Garden are always a prime busker-spotting zone, so you’re likely to see festive-themed performers as well. And all this is not including the daily snowfalls each hour…

Christmas by the River at London Bridge City

Walking along the Thames and seeing the iconic London skyline is an experience in and of itself, but add in Christmas chalets and the magic just gets pumped right up! There’s not many sights more magical than the London Bridge Christmas market.

Boutique vendors set up at London Bridge City, on the South Bank between Tower Bridge and London Bridge. Along with the stalls selling delightful gifts, one of the best parts about Christmas by the River are all the mouth-watering food and drink stalls.

Coming here at night to have something to eat while you wander amongst stalls and Christmas lights, with the River Thames and city all lit up behind you, is incredibly romantic. There are also workshops, tastings, and storytelling events, so it’s ideal for kids or single friends as well.

Greenwich Christmas Market

Heading to Greenwich to visit the markets is always a good idea, but they get amped up at Christmas time with festive stalls, decorations and a series of themed events. There are more than 150 stalls and shops, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to buy gifts.

If you’re in town in mid-November you should definitely head to the Greenwich lantern parade and ceremonial switching on of the Christmas lights, but any time after is just as magical. The whole ancient maritime neighbourhood is decked out with lights and festive goodies, along with a big skating rink in front of the Queen’s House.

As well as the stalls (which are under cover so you can keep a bit warmer!) there’s an ice-skating rink, live shows at the Painted Hall and, of course, the many museums of Greenwich to explore.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

Further down the river from the markets at London Bridge City is the equally iconic Southbank Centre Winter Market. Alpine-style chalets line the sides of the Thames, with twinkling lights strewn above and the massive London Eye dominating the background.

Artisanal goods are on sale along with global cuisine including indulgent drinks and scrumptious street food. The winter market is just a part of the larger Southbank Centre Winter Festival, which also includes a circus, festive musicals, concerts and outdoor art.

This is also where you can find the famous winter igloos beside the river, for a magical Christmas dining experience!

Leicester Square Christmas Market

Smack bang in the middle of London, Leicester Square trades red carpet movie premieres for wooden chalets during Christmas time at the Leicester Square Christmas Market. While the market is small it still manages to pack a lot in to the tiny space!

Lights hang from the trees above the traditional market stalls, which sell mainly beautiful crafts and, of course, yummy treats. They also somehow manage to fit a Belgian spiegeltent into the square, where you can squeeze in to see live cabaret, comedy and magic shows.

If you’re in a rush heading for the tube or walking from Leicester Square to Piccadilly Circus and beyond, make sure you take some time to visit this surprising pop-up market!

Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

Nearby, you’ll find another small Christmas market in one of London’s most iconic locations: directly in front of the National Gallery in cozy Trafalgar Square.

Here, you’ll find a mix of stalls selling tasty treats as well as assorted gifts (the organizers are the same as the Leicester Square one, so you’ll find pretty much the exact same selection), but our favourite thing to do here is simply grab a mulled wine and enjoy the atmosphere.

Christmas at Camden Market

The Camden Markets are totally hip and very popular at any time of year, but, as with most things, the Christmas season just makes everything better.

Camden Market is always a great spot to find truly unique gifts and enjoy international cuisine in the groovy North London neighborhood. During Christmas it’s not just decorations that make it extra festive though, as an ice-skating rink, Christmas grotto and special events are all part of the fun.

Singles can experience speed-dating on ice, while there are some exciting parties and events held in different venues around the markets. There’s even a Festive Vegan Deli event where you can shop for the most mouth-watering vegan delicacies for your Christmas dinner!

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre

For a royal Christmas treat, head to Hampton Court Palace to experience a Festive Fayre the way King Henry VIII might have done! As well as a massive ice-skating rink (that’s always there for Christmas) the palace grounds also play host to many market stalls that specialise in food.

The palace courtyards and grounds are packed with stalls offering the finest artisanal produce, from Christmas pudding, to sausages, churros, brownies and everything in between. There is just as much deliciousness on offer to eat as there is to buy as gifts.

In addition to all this, the palace itself is lavishly decorated (tickets to the market include entrance to the palace), there is live festive music performed on a bandstand, and a Bite-Size Carols event in the Chapel Royal. The Festive Fayre only takes place over a weekend in December, so make sure you book ahead if you want to go.

Kingston Christmas Market

If you’re craving the kind of beautiful, traditional Christmas market that you might find in Europe, but don’t want to travel outside London, then head to the Kingston Christmas Market (not far from Hampton Court Palace) at Kingston Upon Thames.

While it’s technically a village, Kingston Upon Thames is part of South West London and easily reached from central London by train in about 45 minutes. The village itself is where Saxon kings were originally crowned and is now also known for holding one of the prettiest traditional Christmas markets in London.

The ancient town center is filled with wooden chalets at Christmas, selling beautiful decorations, toys, and handmade arts and crafts. A vintage carousel, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine add to the feeling that you’ve both stepped back in time and somehow managed to find yourself in a tiny village market in Germany – although everyone speaks English!

Christmas Under the Canopy at King’s Cross

For those of us who love Christmas but find it very hard to enjoy the cold, a covered market is the perfect compromise. Christmas Under the Canopy (or sometimes just called the Canopy Christmas Market) is the name of the King’s Cross Christmas Market that takes place under a Victorian steel and glass roof in the heart of King’s Cross.

The Canopy Christmas Market is open from Tuesday to Sunday from the end of November until Christmas, with special events taking place each weekend alongside the market stalls. We’re talking festive workshops, masterclasses and tastings, along with weekends that focus on craft goods or vegan foods.

Since it’s held in a historic market hall the weather won’t have too much effect on your enjoyment. Live jazz, carol singers, a craft beer bar and a gin bar round out the experience with a relaxing atmosphere for a tipple!

Borough Market at Christmas

Borough Market is already known as one of the best in London, as it’s a historic year-round food market selling everything from freshly baked cakes to Scottish game or Turkish delight. At Christmas time the famous arches are decorated with Christmas lights, wreaths and more, plus the market has extended opening hours.

As well as the yummy goods for eating on the spot, or purchasing as gourmet gifts, during the Christmas season your shopping will be made extra special by choirs and buskers singing seasonal tunes. The usual edible fare is also added to with Christmas delicacies like mulled wine, Christmas cakes and edible gifts.

Additionally, you can attend some special events like an evening of cheese, where you can learn how to make the ultimate cheeseboard and speak to local cheesemongers for advice on pairings; or the Festive Kitchen, which hosts free demos, tastings and masterclasses with renowned chefs!

visit london christmas markets

Legendary historic sights, awesome (and often free) museums and fabulous food and drinks . There’s no shortage of things to do in the UK capital . Come winter, though, there’s also the added appeal of the city’s festive attractions. Top of the list? Those seriously spectacular Christmas markets in London .

I’m a huge fan of a festive fair and London’s magical collection gets better year after year. Whether you want to sip mulled wine with a backdrop of the River Thames or check out London’s ever-growing Winter Wonderland extravaganza, there are so many outstanding options. Not sure which to add to your agenda first this November or December? Pop your Santa hat on and let’s dive in.

The best Christmas markets in London

People in motion under giant illuminated Christmas lights and an iconic London telephone booth.

There’s (almost) a Christmas market in London for every day of December. From big, bustling picks with German Christmas market vibes to pop-up weekend fairs ideal for picking up gorgeous gifts, here are my top picks.

  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
  • Covent Garden Christmas Market
  • Southbank Centre Christmas Market
  • Christmas by the Bridge
  • King’s Cross Christmas Market
  • Greenwich Christmas Market
  • Christmas at Borough Market
  • Leicester Square Christmas Market
  • Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre
  • Paternoster Square Christmas Market
  • Christmas at Kew
  • Spirit of Christmas Fair

1. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Happy couple are eating sweets and watching entertainment at the christmas fair and market.

  • 2023 dates: 17th November to 1st January
  • Where: 15 Clarendon St, Hyde SK14 2EL
  • Must try: Pull on your skates and hit the ice rink – it’s the biggest in the UK.

For a London Christmas market with all the bells and whistles, you can’t beat Winter Wonderland . This huge festive event is held in Hyde Park every year and has become the biggest – and arguably the best – Christmas market in the UK.

As well as hundreds of wooden chalets selling everything from seasonal treats to handmade gifts, there are heaps of other activities to enjoy. This includes kid-friendly rides, a huge Ferris wheel and a stage for live performances.

2. Covent Garden Christmas Market

A giant illuminated Christmas tree on a bucket with a red ribbon in front of the brightly lit covered market.

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 3rd January
  • Where: Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD
  • Must try: Snap a photo in a restored 19th-century sleigh surrounded by leafy decorated fir trees.

This square’s historic setting and charming Victorian-era buildings make the perfect backdrop for a Christmas market. Covent Garden Market is one of the longest-running festive fairs in London and an absolute must-see.

The square is usually decorated with hundreds of strings of lights and there are plenty of shopping opportunities to be had. Browse stalls selling handmade crafts or venture into the square’s high-end shops to discover special seasonal treats (and sometimes a few discounts).

3. Southbank Centre Christmas Market

On the background the London Eye, the Palace of Westminster and the Big Ben

  • 2023 dates: November 2nd to 26th December
  • Where: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX
  • Must try: Enjoy festive drinks in your very own igloo along the riverfront.

Combine a river stroll with some festive cheer at the Southbank Christmas Market. This is a personal favourite of mine and is particularly handy if you’re catching a show nearby at the National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe after.

Browse the wooden Alpine chalets selling all kinds of wonderful gifts. There’s also plenty of mouth-watering food to buy – think German bratwurst, gourmet burgers, creamy fudge and festive mince pies.

4. Christmas by the River

View to the illuminated Tower Bridge in London, United Kingdom, with christmas decorations in front for the festive season

  • 2023 dates: TBC
  • Where: London Bridge, Riverside, London SE1 2DB
  • Must try: Grab a cup of mulled wine and sip it slowly as you gaze out at London’s skyline.

London Bridge’s Christmas market never fails to amaze. That’s partly due to its amazing location right next to two of London’s most iconic sights: the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

This market is on the smaller side but still packs a punch with its Christmassy treats and charming arts and crafts.

5. King’s Cross Christmas Markets

King's Cross station concourse at Christmas 2021. King's Cross is the Main London rail station for the East Coast London to Edinburgh route, it is situated in North East London, near Camden, England, UK.

  • Where: various venues around King’s Cross station, Euston Road, London N1 9AL
  • Must try: Seek out the 47ft Norddman fir tree adorned with hundreds of lights and cool ski-themed decorations.

Whether you’re catching a train from King’s Cross or not, the area’s markets are well worth stopping by.

There are typically several pop-up events happening throughout the festive season, with many of the events centred around Coal Drops Yard.

Each market sells a fantastic range of unique gifts, from artisan food and quirky homeware to cool independent fashion items.

6. Greenwich Christmas Market

A Christmas market with many fairy lights, including a selection of Christmas jumpers

  • Where: Greenwich Market, London SE10 9HZ
  • Must try: Grab a festive drink and wander Greenwich’s pretty streets which are decked out in twinkling lights.

Get yourself down to historic Greenwich for its annual festive fair. The event takes place in the locally-loved Greenwich Market (which is open all year round).

The venue is decorated for the Advent period, while there are usually a few stalls outside along the riverfront, too.

Greenwich Christmas Market is well-known for its unique and crafty stalls, so prepare to pick up some amazing gifts.

7. Christmas at Borough Market

Pots of mulled wine in a stall in a Christmas market.

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 2nd January
  • Where: Borough Market, London SE1 9AL
  • Must try: Keep an eye on the market’s website for themed festive food evenings that will have you salivating.

Borough Market is a foodie haven throughout the year but it gets an awesome festive makeover in the winter months. Decorations are strung up between its arches, heaps of seasonal treats go on sale and there’s usually a busker or two singing Christmas tunes.

Spoiler alert: make sure you visit with an appetite. There are usually heaps of artisanal food from across the globe to purchase, from sweet delights like mince pies and stollen to award-winning cheeses perfect for your Boxing Day leftovers spread.

8. Leicester Square Christmas Market

Brightly lit hanging Christmas lights in the centre of a commercial street full of people.

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 7th January
  • Where: Leicester Square, London WC2H 7LU
  • Must try: Grab tickets to one of the lively shows in the 1920s Spiegeltent.

At any other time of year, you’ll find Leicester Square full of tourists snapping photos or queuing up to enter the M&M store. By early November, the square turns into a festive fairytale filled with wooden chalets and a huge Christmas tree.

It’s one of the best Christmas markets in London for those seeking a European vibe. Browse stalls selling bratwurst, gluhwein and other German delights.

Last year, there was even a Belgian-style Spiegeltent which hosted shows by the award-winning La Clique circus, cabaret and comedy troupe.

9. Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre

The facade of a royal palace is illuminated with different colours at night.

  • Where: Hampton Court Palace, Hampton Ct Way, East Molesey KT8 9AU
  • Must try: Head to the East Front bandstand for live music and other performances.

Few settings are more romantic than an actual royal palace! If you’re hoping to have a magical Christmas market experience with your other half, head to Hampton Court. The former home of Henry VIII is transformed into a Xmas wonderland for two weekends every December.

The event is hosted throughout the palace grounds and features tonnes of stalls selling sumptuous street food, artisan foodie gifts and handmade crafts.

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre is a ticketed event, although it also includes entrance to the palace itself. Always wanted to explore its grand hallways and opulent chambers? This is your chance to see it all and simultaneously have an enchanting festive experience.

10. Paternoster Square Christmas Market

Christmas market, London, UK.

Picture tucking into a bag of hot roasted chestnuts with a view of the monumental St Paul’s Cathedral. That’s exactly what’s on offer at this small yet charming Christmas market in London’s Paternoster Square.

It plays host to a regular monthly food market throughout the year. However, in November and December, stalls offering plenty of Christmas cheer take its place.

As well as 20 or so cabins selling all sorts of lovely items, there’s a charming Christmas tree display in the heart of the square.

11. Christmas at Kew

Step into a mesmerise world of festive wonder with this captivating image of a famous glittering light tunnel arched structure at Christmas at Kew, an enchanting event held in the delightful Kew Gardens, England. The sparkling lights adorn the tunnel, creating a dazzling spectacle that exudes joy and magic of the holiday season. People walk through the illuminated tunnel, some wearing bobble hats, adding a sense of merriment and excitement to the scene. This image perfectly captures the essence of Christmas cheer and the joyous ambiance of the event. Ideal for illustrating holiday celebrations, winter wonderlands, and the enchanting beauty of Kew Gardens during the most wonderful time of the year. Sparkling delights. Breathtaking display. Wonder. Christmas in London

If you fancy visiting further afield, my guide to the best UK Christmas markets 2024 , details where to go this year, curated to help you plan your holiday getaway. Or if you’re thinking about travelling abroad this winter, my guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe should give you plenty of ideas on where to go.

Food Stalls

Here are a few specialty items you can expect to find across London’s markets.

Mince Pies : A British Christmas is incomplete without mince pies. These small, round pies have a filling of chopped dried fruit, spices, and sometimes distilled spirits like brandy. Usually dusted with icing sugar, they’re a festive favourite at every stall.

Mulled Wine (Glühwein) : Sip on hot mulled wine as you wander through the market. Infused with spices like cinnamon, cloves, and orange zest, it’s the traditional drink to warm up with on a cold London evening.

Pigs in Blankets : Savour these small sausages wrapped in bacon, a classic Christmas treat.

Roasted Chestnuts : Chestnut vendors at the markets offer paper cones filled with hot, roasted chestnuts. The smoky aroma and warm taste make them a hand-warming delight.

Bratwurst : Although German in origin, Bratwurst has become a staple across Europe. Grilled to perfection and served with mustard or ketchup, it’s a hearty option.

Fish and Chips : For a truly British experience, traditional fish and chips are available, featuring battered fish with a side of hot, crispy chips, often served with a wedge of lemon and tartare sauce.

Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows : For a sweet treat, stalls serve rich hot chocolate topped with soft marshmallows, sometimes with the option to add a shot of Baileys or rum for extra warmth.

Stollen : This German bread, laden with dried fruit and marzipan and dusted with icing sugar, is a festive favourite found at traditional stalls.

Hot Cider : Apple cider, heated and spiced, offers an alternative to mulled wine for those looking for something different to drink.

Gingerbread : A fun and decorative snack, gingerbread creations are often elaborately decorated with icing and lollies. Whether shaped like people or intricately constructed houses, these make tasty snacks and fun gifts.

Turkish Delight : Originating from the Middle East but commonly found in London. Turkish Delight is a confection made from sugar and starch, flavoured with various ingredients like rosewater or lemon.

Oysters and Champagne : Some high-end stalls in places like Covent Garden serve freshly shucked oysters alongside miniature bottles of champagne.

Gifts and Stocking Fillers

British Tea Selection : Some stalls focus on Britain’s tea culture, where you can find a variety of blends ranging from classic Earl Grey to herbal infusions. These often come in beautifully designed tins or boxes, making them a nice gift.

Custom Illustrations : Some artists set up shop, offering to draw custom illustrations or portraits. Whether it’s a sketch of a loved one or a London landmark, these illustrations provide a personalised gift option.

Hand-Knitted Scarves : You can find a range of scarves, often knitted by local artisans. These are warm and come in patterns that are unique to the individual maker, making each scarf a one-of-a-kind gift.

Vintage Antiques : Some vendors offer vintage items like old maps, rare books, or antique jewellery. These make intriguing gifts for people who appreciate history or unique artefacts. There’s a good chance of finding these in Greenwich.

Personalised Baubles : Ornaments can often be personalised on the spot, making them a sentimental gift or for your own tree.

Craft Beer : Several stalls feature craft beers from local breweries. Available in single bottles or gift sets, these beers provide a taste of the local brewing scene.

Travel Information

For the most current information on winter activities and upcoming events in London, I recommend checking out Visit London , the city’s official tourism website.

Sustainability Tips

Here are some suggestions for travelling more responsibly in London this Christmas season.

Eco-Friendly Hotels : If you’re visiting from abroad, look for hotels committed to sustainability. Many hotels in Central London have adopted renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power, to minimise their carbon footprint.

Reducing Food Waste : The markets are a feast for the senses, but it’s easy to overbuy. To reduce food waste, consider sharing dishes with your travel companions. Many vendors also offer smaller portions, allowing you to taste a variety without wasting food.

Ethical Consumption : Try to buy only what you need or know you will use. Many local artisans sell their wares, from crafts to handmade soaps, and purchasing from them supports local businesses.

Sustainable Diets : As you explore London’s food scene, choose plant-based or locally sourced meals when possible. Borough Market, for example, has several stalls that focus on locally grown or organic produce.

Sustainable Transport : London’s public transport system is one of the most extensive in the world, making it easy to get around without a car. The Tube, buses, and even boats on the Thames can get you close to all the major attractions. Walking or cycling is also a great way to see the city.

Legendary historic sights, awesome (and often free) museums and fabulous food and drinks . There’s no shortage of things to do in the UK capital . Come winter , though, there’s also the added appeal of the city’s festive attractions. Top of the list? Those seriously spectacular Christmas markets in London .

I’m a huge fan of a festive fair and London’s magical collection gets better year after year. Not sure which to add to your agenda first this November or December? Pop your Santa hat on and let’s dive in.

The best Christmas markets in London

visit london christmas markets

There’s (almost) a Christmas market in London for every day of December. From big, bustling picks with German Christmas market vibes to pop-up weekend fairs ideal for picking up gorgeous gifts, here are my top picks.

  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
  • Covent Garden Christmas Market
  • Southbank Centre Christmas Market
  • Christmas by the Bridge
  • King’s Cross Christmas Market
  • Greenwich Christmas Market
  • Christmas at Borough Market
  • Leicester Square Christmas Market
  • Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre
  • Paternoster Square Christmas Market
  • Christmas at Kew
  • Spirit of Christmas Fair

1. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

visit london christmas markets

2. Covent Garden Christmas Market

visit london christmas markets

3. Southbank Centre Christmas Market

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: November 2nd to 26th December
  • Where: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX
  • Must try: Enjoy festive drinks in your very own igloo along the riverfront.

Combine a river stroll with some festive cheer at the Southbank Christmas Market. This is a personal favorite of mine and is particularly handy if you’re catching a show nearby at the National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe after.

Browse the wooden Alpine chalets selling all kinds of wonderful gifts. There’s also plenty of mouth-watering food to buy – think German bratwurst, gourmet burgers, creamy fudge and festive mince pies.

4. Christmas by the River

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: TBC
  • Where: London Bridge, Riverside, London SE1 2DB
  • Must try: Grab a cup of mulled wine and sip it slowly as you gaze out at London’s skyline.

London Bridge’s Christmas market never fails to disappoint. That’s partly due to its amazing location right next to two of London’s most iconic sights: the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

This market is on the smaller side but still packs a punch with its Christmassy treats and charming arts and crafts.

5. King’s Cross Christmas Markets

visit london christmas markets

  • Where: various venues around King’s Cross station, Euston Road, London N1 9AL
  • Must try: Seek out the 47ft Norddman fir tree adorned with hundreds of lights and cool ski-themed decorations.

Whether you’re catching a train from King’s Cross or not, the area’s markets are well worth stopping by.

There are typically several pop-up events happening throughout the festive season, with many of the events centered around Coal Drops Yard.

Each market sells a fantastic range of unique gifts, from artisan food and quirky homeware to cool independent fashion items.

6. Greenwich Christmas Market

visit london christmas markets

  • Where: Greenwich Market, London SE10 9HZ
  • Must try: Grab a festive drink and wander Greenwich’s pretty streets which are decked out in twinkling lights.

Get yourself down to historic Greenwich for its annual festive fair. The event takes place in the locally-loved Greenwich Market (which is open all year round).

The venue is decorated for the Advent period, while there are usually a few stalls outside along the riverfront, too.

Greenwich Christmas Market is well-known for its unique and crafty stalls, so prepare to pick up some amazing gifts.

7. Christmas at Borough Market

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 2nd January
  • Where: Borough Market, London SE1 9AL
  • Must try: Keep an eye on the market’s website for themed festive food evenings that will have you salivating.

Borough Market is a foodie haven throughout the year but it gets an awesome festive makeover in the winter months. Decorations are strung up between its arches, heaps of seasonal treats go on sale and there’s usually a busker or two singing Christmas tunes.

Spoiler alert: make sure you visit with an appetite. There are usually heaps of artisanal food from across the globe to purchase, from sweet delights like mince pies and stollen to award-winning cheeses.

8. Leicester Square Christmas Market

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 7th January
  • Where: Leicester Square, London WC2H 7LU
  • Must try: Grab tickets to one of the lively shows in the 1920s Spiegeltent.

At any other time of year, you’ll find Leicester Square full of tourists snapping photos or queuing up to enter the popular Marks and Spencers store.

9. Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: 1st to 3rd December and 8th to 10th December
  • Where: Hampton Court Palace, Hampton Ct Way, East Molesey KT8 9AU
  • Must try: Head to the East Front bandstand for live music and other performances.

Few settings are more romantic than an actual royal palace! If you’re hoping to have a magical Christmas market experience with your other half, head to Hampton Court. The former home of Henry VIII is transformed into a winter wonderland for two weekends every December.

10. Paternoster Square Christmas Market

visit london christmas markets

  • Where: Paternoster Square, London EC4M 7DX
  • Must try: Cherish your visit by taking a photo in the market’s giant snow globe.

11. Christmas at Kew

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: 15th November to 7th January
  • Where: Kew Gardens, Richmond TW9 3AB
  • Must try: Make a beeline for the Christmas Cathedral; a huge tunnel featuring dozens upon dozens of strings of fairy lights.

Lush plants, ethereal greenhouses and lots of sparkly lights await at this venue. Kew Gardens is a must-see in London, no matter the time of year. Come Christmas though, the venue is transformed into a festive paradise.

The event will be in its 11th year in 2023 – and it’s likely to be as awesome as 2022’s event. The main attraction of Christmas at Kew is the festive light trail which combines thousands of sparkling lights with music, fire displays and mesmerizing illuminations.

12. Spirit of Christmas Fair

visit london christmas markets

  • 2023 dates: 30th October to 5th November
  • Where: Olympia London, Hammersmith Rd, London W14 8UX
  • Must try: Learn how to make a Christmas wreath or how to expertly wrap gifts in a workshop.

Fancy getting into the festive mood a little early? Get your shopping done well ahead of time with a trip to the Spirit of Christmas Fair .

This three-day event takes place in late October/early November at Olympia London and it’s always a memorable experience. It’s ticketed (prices start at around $27) but worth paying for as you’ll have access to over 700 stalls from both independent and well-known brands.

If all that shopping starts to make you peckish, you’ll be spoilt for choice by delicious delicacies. Browse stalls selling festive delights or book a table at the Spirit of Christmas restaurant for an indulgent multi-course meal.

You’ll also have access to dozens of creative workshops, demonstrations and tastings, plus some incredible live music.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas across Europe , with hundreds of festive markets glittering brilliantly as soon as the first Advent door is opened. Christmas lights at the street market at night in Dresden, Germany with a young boy in a hat looking on

1. Dresden, Germany

The granddaddy of Germany ’s Christmas markets, Dresden ’s Striezelmarkt has enraptured folk since 1434. It’s big , with 240 chalets welcoming nearly three million visitors each year. But it’s not just for tourists. The backdrop is spellbinding, with thousands of lights and, on the Altmarkt, the world’s biggest Christmas pyramid adorned with life-sized figures. The city on the Elbe fizzes festively with carousels and carollers, ice skating and stalls doing a brisk trade in everything from beautifully handmade nutcrackers, Räuchermännchen (smoking men) and Erzgebirge crib figures to Germany’s tastiest Christstollen, dense, buttery fruitcake sprinkled with icing sugar.

A man and a woman eat a pretzal at Innsbruck Christmas market in Austria

2. Innsbruck, Austria

In the snowy Austrian Alps, Innsbruck hosts several enchanting Christmas markets. In the medieval old town, a huge tree glitters in front of the Golden Roof, folk bands play and chalets sell decorations, candles, gingerbread, and mulled wine. A huge crowd of people moving over Nuremberg's world-famous Christmas market (Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt) at night, passing colorful illuminated Christmas decorations and food stalls.

3. Nuremberg, Germany

Dates : December 1–24, 2023

You can’t whisper Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) without Nuremberg being uttered in the same breath. Does it live up to the hype? You bet. You’ll have to jostle with crowds, as two million visitors flock here each year, but it’s still fantasy stuff, with a blonde-locked, gold-robed Christkind launching the festivities. The hub is the Hauptmarkt, with its candy-striped chalets dishing out everything from Zwetschgenmännle (figures made from prunes, figs and nuts) to Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and brass-foil Rauschgold angels. But you’ll feel the festive vibes everywhere, with carols, concerts, fairground rides and a magnificent nativity scene in front of the Gothic church .

A display of wooden Tió de Nadal (Christmas logs), which is a character in Catalan mythology relating to a Christmas tradition.

4. Barcelona, Spain

Dates : November 24–December 23, 2023

Who needs Santa when you can have a grinning, present-pooping log called Caga Tió? You will find this Catalan Christmas oddity in miniature form alongside mistletoe, turrón nougat and a biblical wonderland of nativity figurines at Barcelona 's Fira de Santa Llúcia, sprawling in front of the Gothic cathedral on Plaça de la Seu. And if you think Caga Tió is bizarre, wait until you see the irreverent Caganer, a defecating figurine hidden in the nativity scene for good fortune and fertile harvests.

Traditional Christmas market in the Ravenna Gorge, Germany, held under the huge aqueduct with a train passing over it while it's snowing.

5. Ravenna Gorge, Germany

Dates: November 24–December 17, 2023

Sheltering under a strikingly illuminated 40m-high viaduct in the thickly wooded, steep-sided Höllental (‘Hell Valley’) in Germany ’s Black Forest , this festive beauty in the Ravenna Gorge looks as though it has been plucked straight from the pages of a Grimm fairy tale. If there’s a dusting of snow, the winter wonderland picture is complete. Tourists? Not really – this one is largely for locals and is all the lovelier for it. Look out for Black Forest paper-cut designs, lambswool rugs and local smoked ham and venison sausage. Take a train to Hinterzarten or Himmelreich, then hop on the free shuttle or walk.

Perched above Lake Lucerne , the mountaintop Christkindlimärt has festive music and over 40 decorated market stalls selling beeswax candles, nativity figurines, gingerbread and other stocking fillers.
