It is a country that offers a wide array of flavors and experiences for tourists from all over the world.

You should try to accommodate one of the incredible Vietnamese festivals in your itinerary. There are about ten festivals that are celebrated in this beautiful country, of which the Hoi An Lantern Festival and Buddha’s birthday are our favourites. 

We advise you to also witness a unique art form while in Vietnam – the water puppet show.

You can spend a peaceful evening in one of the temples or indulge in nail-biting adventures like rafting, trekking, snorkelling, sailing, or surfing.

It is not a small country with only a couple of attractions, so five days is not enough to explore all of Vietnam. So, we recommend exploring one of the three regions of the country – North, South, or Central.

You will most likely be amazed by the Surprise Cave in the Bo Hon Island and Titop Island. When visiting the latter, you get the unique opportunity to climb to the top of the islet and relish picturesque 360-degree views.

3. Mai Chau

Mai Chau is a serene town about 150km away from Hanoi. If you want to experience the lifestyle of native Vietnamese people, we recommend choosing a homestay for accommodation.

The surrounding mountains make this town an ideal retreat for Nature-lovers.

If you are an adrenaline junkie, we recommend a trip to the Hoang Lien National Park in Sa Pa. You can hike to Fan Si Pan, the highest mountain in Vietnam.

The breathtaking views from the mountaintop are must-see!

Other attractions in the Hoang Lien National Park include the Ta Phin Village and the Cat Cat Village. It offers a diverse habitat for a wide array of animals, including some endangered species.

Another viable option to explore floating markets in Can Tho. This city comes alive at night, and you should take a boat ride to check out its renowned canal network.

5. Chau Doc

Chau Doc is a small town near the Vietnam-Cambodia border. If floating markets sound interesting to you, you are in for a treat if you visit the floating villages and temples.

The market is often bustling with tourists, especially in the morning.

We recommend a trek to Sam Hill, standing 750ft tall. You can relish some awe-inspiring panoramic views of the city from Sam Hill, as it is the only high ground region.

Da Lat is probably the most famous honeymoon destination in Vietnam. The Valley of Love is an all-time favorite destination of couples. It is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” and the “flower capital of Vietnam.”

The cable car ride is a must-visit, offering a splendid aerial view of the beautiful city. Da Lat is centered on a golf course and a lake and is surrounded by lakes, hills, pine forests, and waterfalls – literally in the lap of Nature.

The above figures are a slightly higher-end estimate of the total costs of a Vietnam trip. The actual costs would differ based on the number of internal flights, the type of Halong Bay cruise you book, the number of cities you cover, the amount of shopping you indulge in, and the type of sightseeing attractions you visit.

Average cost of a trip to Vietnam – Full Breakdown

In this section, we will go over the key components of your Vietnam trip budget one at a time.

1. Accommodation in Vietnam

Accommodation in Vietnam is fairly affordable and offers tremendous value for money. The price will obviously vary depending on the city in which you’re staying and the quality of accommodation you choose.

But since I do not want to be vague, here are a few estimates for you

Accommodation in Hanoi costs

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and usually included in most Vietnam itineraries.

As a first time visitor to Vietnam, you should choose a stay in the Old Quarter of Vietnam. The location is central and there are plenty of things to do in the Old Quarter . Booking street food tours in Hanoi or tours to nearby places and cities is convenient if you stay in the Old Quarter.

The cost of accommodation in Hanoi shall be as follows:

• Budget accommodation – in hostels, guesthouses, etc. = approximately USD 7-10per person per day
• Mid-range accommodation – in centrally located hotels = approximately USD 40-60 (per person on a twin sharing basis) (We got a steal deal for the 4-star Hanoian Central Spa and Hotel – Agoda winner of the top choice of hotel in Hanoi – 2022)
• High-end accommodation – high end accommodation in Hanoi costs around USD 60-100 per person on a twin sharing basis

Accommodation in Hoi An/Danang costs

Accommodation in Hoi An or Danang is usually cheaper than accommodation in bigger cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Out of the central Vietnamese cities, Hoi An is probably the most expensive because of its touristy appeal.

The cost of accommodation in Hoi An, Danang or Hue shall be as follows:

• Budget accommodation – in hostels, guesthouses, etc. = approximately USD 7-10 per person per day
• Mid-range accommodation – in centrally located hotels = approximately USD 30-50 (per person on a twin sharing basis)
• High-end accommodation – high end accommodation in Hanoi costs around USD 50-90 per person on a twin sharing basis

But a few points to remember: – Staying in Hoi An Old Town would be a bit more expensive than staying away from the Old Town – Da Nang is home to numerous luxury chain resorts – a stay at one of the premium properties would be far more expensive than USD 50-90 per person. But mid-range properties in Da Nang are very affordable and offer the best value for money.

But since I do not want to be vague, here’re a few estimates for you

Accommodation in Ho Chi Minh costs

Ho Chi Minh is the biggest city in Vietnam and being its commercial hub – also the most expensive city in Vietnam .

Accommodation in central areas of Ho Chi Minh city like in District 1 or District 3 would be substantially more expensive than accommodation in central areas of Hanoi, Hoi An or Da Nang. But the extra money you spend on accommodation here would get set off against the more affordable stay in other parts of Vietnam.

As a first time visitor to Vietnam, you should choose a stay in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City. Most important tourist attractions in SaigonThe location is central and there are plenty of things to do in the Old Quarter . Booking street food tours in Hanoi or tours to nearby places and cities is convenient if you stay in the Old Quarter.

The cost of accommodation in Ho Chi Minh City shall be as follows:

• Budget accommodation – in hostels, guesthouses, etc. = approximately USD 10-15 per person per day

2. Food in Vietnam

The next expense on your trip to Vietnam shall be food. In Vietnam, you have plenty of food options. From local street food, to dining in local restaurants, cafés or fine dine places serving global cuisine – you can decide what to eat depending on your taste.

But to get the best feel of Vietnamese food, my advice to you would be – to book a food tour in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city (to explore the best local food joints and taste the most authentic and delicious food, desserts and drinks in Vietnam) – eat at a mix of street food places and restaurants serving Vietnamese food or global food (like Indian, Japanese, Italian restaurants) – try their egg coffee, drip coffee, cold brew and other special coffee preparations

But to sum up, here’re typical cost estimates of meals in Vietnam:

• Vietnam street food cost: 1-2 USD per person per meal
• Vietnam Mid-range restaurant food cost: USD 10-15 per person per meal
• Vietnam High-end restaurant food cost: USD 20 and above per person per meal
• Vietnam beverage costs: USD 1-2 per person per beverage
• Alcoholic drink costs in Vietnam: USD 1 to USD 15 per person (Depending on what brand and alcohol you choose. Local beer is super cheap in Vietnam and a bottle of beer would cost only about 0.5-2 USD. But wines and expensive alcohol bottles could go all the way up to USD 15-20 per person depending on where you buy your alcohol from)

3. Sightseeing and Entrance ticket costs in Vietnam

The entrance ticket and sightseeing costs incurred would depend entirely on the places that you choose to visit.

Typically, the average cost of sightseeing in Vietnam per person per day are USD 20 . Some Vietnamese attractions would be expensive but the free sightseeing places would offset those expenses and keep the overall Vietnam entrance ticket and sightseeing tour costs to around USD 20.

Some places where you’d end up spending a lot of money on entrance fees and sightseeing tours are:

Ba Na Hills: Approximately USD 40 (Booking a guided tour of Ba Na Hills using Viator saves some money)

Day trips: During your time in Vietnam, you’d go on a few day trips from your base city. An average day trip costs around USD 60-70 per person .

Some typical day trip options are: – Day trips to Hue from Hoi An or Da Nang – Day trip to My Son Sanctuary from Hoi An or Da Nang – Day trip to Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City – Day trip to Halong Bay from Hanoi – Day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi – Day trip to Mua Caves from Hanoi

So if you’re on a budget, you should avoid a few of the above places or try to visit these places by yourself.

4. Local Commute costs in Vietnam

You can commute within a city either on a two-wheeler, or a car with driver. Grabs are available only in major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc. Public transport is available in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh but isn’t a very practical way of visiting the many tourist attractions in the city.

The typical costs of local commute are:

• Two wheeler rental costs in Vietnam (With petrol) – USD 7 per day
• Costs of hiring a car with a driver are USD 35-40 for about 8 hours

Grab even though available in major cities in Vietnam is often not a convenient – language is a major barrier and communicating with Grab drivers could be a challenge – many areas in the heart of the Hanoi and Hoi An are shut off for vehicular traffic

That said, taking a Grab from the airport to your hotel is one of the most comfortable and value for money option.

The other way of accessing tourist places when on a short trip to major cities in Vietnam is by using the well-connected hop-on-hop-off bus in Hanoi or the hop-on-hop-off bus in Ho Chi Minh city.

5. Inter-city commute within Vietnam

Vietnam is a long country and its major cities are spread out and quite far away from one another. Road journeys between cities are possible but not comfortable or recommended due to the vast distances between two cities.

The best way to travel from one city to another is by a flight. The average cost of an internal flight between two cities is around USD 70-100. I highly recommend booking a Bamboo Airways flight for their excellent hospitality and fewer flight cancellations. Read my full review of the Bamboo Airways .

You could also take a train between cities. The cost of AC- sleeper trains between major cities is around USD 35-50. But for how long a train journey between cities takes and how little the difference in ticket costs is, taking a flight between cities makes the most sense.

6. Other Vietnam Trip Expenses

Now that we’ve covered the basic costs of a trip to Vietnam, it is important to look at a few more expenses that you’d incur while traveling in Vietnam.

Halong Bay Cruise

Most tourists visiting Vietnam visit the Halong Bay area . You could either take a day trip to Halong Bay cruise or go on an overnight cruise to Halong Bay. A 2 day 1 night cruise is the most popular way of visiting Halong Bay. But some even prefer to go on a 3 day cruise to Halong Bay.

The typical average cost of a Halong Bay cruise are:

Day trip to Halong Bay: USD 70 per person 1 night 2 days Halong Bay cruise: USD 160 per person 2 nights 3 days Halong Bay cruise: USD 320 per person

Airport Transfers

Airport transfer costs in Vietnam would depend on the nature of transport you choose.

For a comfortable airport transfer, book a Grab or a private car transfer. Choose an airport shuttle if you’re on a budget. The cost of an airport shuttle is approximately USD 3 . You can take an airport shuttle from Hawould be approximately USD 3.

The costs of airport transfer are:

By Grab (From airport to central touristy areas in Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City): USD 15

By private car : USD 20

Quick note: Getting a Grab will require you to go to a specific Grab pick up point. You’ll need internet access on your phone. Communicating with the driver would be challenge because of the language barriers. The drivers may try to cheat you by taking longer routes.

Plus, the difference in costs of a Grab airport transfer and a private car is minimal. So to save yourself unwanted hassle, I highly recommend booking this private airport pick up in advance .

Leading SIM card companies in Vietnam are Viettel, Mobiphone and Vinaphone. I used Mobiphone and loved the network coverage and data speed. A Sim Card with My husband used Viettel – a slightly more expensive option but ran into trouble with insufficient data (probably because he was scammed and sold a used SIM card).

The sim cards sold at the airport often prove to be more expensive than SIM cards sold at official network companies. But regardless of which network provider you choose and where you buy your SIM from, the cost of a SIM card in Vietnam per day shouldn’t be more than USD 2 per day.

But based on our scammy experience with the vendors, buy an Airalo E-sim in advance . You don’t need to go through the hassle of changing the physical sim card and the prices are comparable with locally sold sim cards.

There are plenty of things to buy in Vietnam – all available at super affordable rates. From silks, souvenirs, coffee, cheap shoes and clothes to fancy artwork – there is something for everyone.

So what you shop for and how much you shop for is a call you have to take and estimating how much you’ll spend on shopping is difficult.

The only tips I have for you to save money on shopping are – to shop from local markets like the Ben Thanh market in Ho Chi Minh city or Da Nang market and – to bargain heavily.

A trip to Vietnam for 7 days would cost USD 350 for a budget vacation, USD 700 for a mid-range vacation and USD 1295 for a high-end vacation. The suggested costs are costs per person for the entire duration and do not include internal flights, Halong Bay cruise and shopping and other extras.

When we went to Vietnam, we also went on a 2 days 1 night Halong Bay cruise, which cost us USD 160 per person. So our total expense per person was approximately INR 130,000.

Does Vietnam use cash?

Most commercial establishments, restaurants, hotels, super markets, grocery stores, spas and tour operators accept cards. But small shops and local street food vendors do not accept cards. The only currency accepted all over Vietnam is VND or Vietnamese Dong. So always carry some local currency cash with you when traveling in Vietnam.

• Consider getting in with the locals to really learn what the culture is like. One option is to become an English teacher in Vietnam so that you can become part of the community. Other volunteer options are available. Generally speaking, staying away from the larger organized tours, and traveling slowly will help with this.
• Haggling is part of the experience in Vietnam. If you keep it lighthearted and fun you'll find it less frustrating. Remember to cut the price to less than half of the originally offering price. It also helps to walk away a couple of times before settling on a price. This will help you see exactly what you should be paying for an item.
• Many people take the "VIP" buses through Vietnam. These can be arranged in your hotel or through any of the many travel agencies around town. Generally, all of the buses are comparable in quality. Many do break down, so be prepared. Wherever you decide to purchase your ticket, negotiate hard, because prices are often dramatically marked up.
• If you decide to purchase some tailor made cloths, most people do this in Hoi An. Make sure you have a few days in town and do your shopping on the first day. You'll want a few extra days in case the clothes don't fit appropriately and need to be resized. There are tailors of varying quality and you generally get what you pay for.
• There are plenty of western style restaurants throughout Vietnam, particularly in the more touristy areas. These restaurants are often dramatically more expensive than their local counterparts, and they are often a poor reflection on western cuisine. Stick to the local restaurants that serve up Vietnamese food and you'll save yourself a lot of money and have more interesting and delicious meals.
• Some of the more popular areas in Vietnam are almost always visited as part of a tour. These areas include the Mekong Delta and Halong Bay. Despite the appearance that you must visit these areas as part of a tour, it is very possible to travel to them independently on local buses or boats. The experience is often more enjoyable and memorable as well.

5 Amazing Days in Vietnam

Northern Vietnam Explorer

If you plan to visit Northern Vietnam, book your international flights to Vietnam  which land at Noi Bai – Hanoi International Airport. There is lots of adventure to be had when visiting this region of Vietnam; the Northern Explorer has been designed to showcase many of Vietnam’s qualities in one short trip.

Hanoi: 40KM from Noi Bai Airport

Central Hanoi is only 40KM from Noi Bai airport. Vietnam’s ancient capital city – famed for its fantastic culture and exquisite street food. There are many fascinating museums and historic sites showcasing Vietnamese people and cultures that are simply a must-see the first time you are here, some of which include:

• One-Pillar Pagoda
• Temple of Literature

Halong: 180KM from Hanoi

You can spend either 1 or 2 days cruising in the World Famous Halong Bay which is 180KM from Hanoi.

The 1 day tour departs in the morning around 8am and it takes 3 hours 30 minutes to get to the Bay. The cruise starts at noon from the port of Halong with a daily  Halong bay daily tour  (no bedrooms). This is normally a 4 hour cruise with a seafood lunch on boat. Highlight of the tour is to visit Heaven Palace Cave (Dong Thien Cung). The cruise arrives back to Halong port at around 4-4.30pm and finishes in Hanoi at 8pm.

The 2 day Halong tour is the most popular choice as you get to see the main sights and spend a night floating on the bay.

The trips include many activities when you are there including kayaking amongst the serene Limestone Karsts, visiting Caves, and having the opportunity to swim in the cool waters (from March to late October)

During the cruise there are a couple of places that are sure to amaze even the most discerning of guests. The Surprise Cave (Hang Sung Sot) is a grand 12,000m 2 cavern located in Bo Hon Island, deep in the heart of Halong’s Heritage Zone. It was found by the French who named it Grotte des surprise (Surprise Cave) in 1901.

The spectacular Titop Island is one of the more famous islands in Ha Long Bay. It is a beautiful stop to make on your cruise and offers a unique feature in that you can climb stairs to the top of the islet and get a picturesque 360’ view. It also features a fantastic crescent shaped beach, known for its white sand and small waves, making it ideal to lie and sunbathe followed by cooling down with a calming dip in the water.

After your cruise ends on 2 nd day you will be transferred back to your hotel in Hanoi.

Mai Chau : 150KM from Hanoi

Mai Chau village

Situated around 150km from Hanoi is the tranquil town of Mai Chau. The area creates interest among travelers because of the simple way of life for the villagers coupled with the fantastic surrounding mountain scenery. If staying overnight you will get an authentic look at the Vietnamese countryside by staying with a local family in a Homestay. The family will provide dinner and breakfast for you the next morning, giving you a chance to interact with them and fully immerse yourself in the way of life. You can visit the town for 1 or 2 days.

Sapa: 400KM from Hanoi

The most beautiful Northwest town of Sapa is 400KM from Hanoi. The best way to visit this place is by taking the night train which departs from Hanoi between 8-10pm

Ninh Binh : Located just 90KM from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is famous with Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Tam Coc Grottos, Bich Dong, Bai Dinh Pagoda, Trang An nature reserve, Cuc Phuong National Park…

– Cu Chi Tunnels: 60KM from Saigon

A morning drive will take you to visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels, located 60km to the northwest of Ho Chi Minh’s city centre. The tunnels compose a twisting maze of underground passages, chambers, rooms and booby traps used by the Vietminh. Upon arrival, you will watch a short introductory video on the tunnels construction before having the opportunity to explore the maze yourself, portions of which have now been widened to accommodate modern day visitors.

– Cai Be floating market: Mekong Delta – 110km South West of Saigon

This fascinating arrangement of boats lined along the river is host to the colorful Cai Rang floating market, a congregation of sampans from all provinces of the Delta laden with a rainbow of tropical fruits and fresh vegetables.

– Can Tho: Mekong Delta – 160km South West of Saigon

Can Tho is the base from which your Mekong River cruise will depart. From here you have easy access to many top attractions around the Mekong River – and your cruise will make a stop at each one.

– Chau Doc: 250km West of Saigon

This small town acts as a crossroads for goods to and from nearby Cambodia. A stroll around the market on any morning will surprise you with the variety of goods for sale. Many Temples and floating villages make up the other things to see for visitors wanting to gain an insight in to the local culture. The nearby ‘Sam Hill’ now attracts many visitors – comfortably climbable at 750ft it is the only high ground in the region, therefore offering fantastic panoramic views across the countryside.

– Da Lat: 300km North East of Saigon

Da lat is known throughout Vietnam as one of the most popular honeymoon destinations. The town is set against a backdrop of dark green mountains covered in pine trees, while the city itself is infused with greenery and often referred to as the ‘flower capital of Vietnam’. The temperature is pleasantly cool throughout the year, as it is located on the edge of Vietnam’s Central Highland Plateau. Highlights of Dalat include the Lam Ty Ni pagoda, accessible via a cable car ride providing some breathtaking views of the city and its surrounding scenery, Bao Dai summer palace, Tuyen Lam Lake and a rustic railway station with only an 8km network of tracks remaining.

– Nha Trang: 400km East of Saigon

Nha Trang is a beautiful coastal town famous for its long a pleasurable beach. Special watersports facilities including parasailing, jet skiing, surfing and a children’s water park make it a top destination for any adventure-seekers. Other activities you shouldn’t miss are:

• Hire a bicycle to ride around the city and its surrounding areas, and really get your bearings
• Have fun at Vinpearl Amusement park
• Experience some of the history at the ancient Po Ngar Cham towers or the French built Nha Tho Nui Cathedral
• Long Son Pagoda
• National Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam

Central Vietnam Excursion

Da Nang is a large beach city located in the centre of Vietnam. It has an International Airport which provides easy access to the fantastic Heritage sites of Hoi An and Hue.

Hoi An: 25km South of Danang

Hoian River

Hoi An has been elected a World Heritage Listed site due to its impeccable preservation. It has a varied mix of ancient households, with touches of Japanese, Chinese and Thai styles in the building designs.

Close by is a Pottery Village and a Silk Farm, and even more popular is renting a bicycle for a cycle to Tra Que village, here you can have fun with local farm activities – giving you the opportunity to experience the laid back and happy life of the local people.

It is another place famous for its stunning beach, here you can relax for the afternoon, topping up your tan and sipping a cocktail from one of the many beachside bars and restaurants.

My Son: 50km West of Hoi An

My Son is an impressive historical site exhibiting relics of the ancient Champan civilization. Today it stands as a mere red ochre shadow to its former greatness, but the structures, courtyards and paths have withstood the tests of time and nature and still afford visitors an insight into the great history.

Hue: 150km North of Danang

Another of Vietnam’s Heritage zones, the city of Hue is famous for its main attraction – the ancient Citadel. It was made a UNESCO site in 1993, to help preserve and restore the remaining buildings and walls of the ancient city. Other activities include visits to any of the 7 Royal Tombs surrounding the city and the Thien Mu Pagoda.

Quang Binh: 200km North of Hue

Fresh on to the tourist scene is Quang Binh province. In 2003, UNESCO recognized it as a heritage zone and since then visitors have steadily increased year by year. The Phong Nha National Park is the main attraction of the area and is home to many caves and grottoes buried deep in to the huge Limestone Karsts.

Kon Tum: 200km South West of Hoi An

This is a great location for those looking for an authentic look at a Vietnamese city untouched by normal tourism. As such, this stands as the main attraction of the city as well as a few landmarks which people like to visit including a wooden church and the bishops building.

Pleiku: Central Highlands

Pleiku is another one of Vietnam’s central cities that remains untouched by major tourism. It offers a look at the country that few people see when they visit here. It is a peaceful location and you are best spending a couple of days here just to relax and peruse through various local shops and temples.

Buon Ma Thuot: 150km North West of Nha Trang

I’m planning a five-day trip with my friend arriving to Hanoi and departing from Ho Chi Minh City. We’d definitely like to go to Halong Bay. I also am interested in in Sapa. (these two I anticipate taking a day each or maybe 2 for Halong Bay). I’m wondering though how you’d recommend getting from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and if you would suggest any other destinations, or if time is too tight for more. I also figured we’d spend some time in the arrival and departure cities the day of arrival and departure.

Yes, you can travel to Halong Bay and Da Nang within 4 days in Vietnam. This is my suggested itinerary:

• Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi. Transfer to Halong Bay (2.5 hours by car). Overnight at hotel in Halong.
• Day 2: Take a 4-hour or 6-hour boat trip to visit the bay. Back to Hanoi in the afternoon for flight to Da Nang.

Thank you for your comment. Since Hanoi, Hue and Saigon are in different regions of Vietnam which will require domestic flights, 5 days in Vietnam are not enough to visit these 3 cities.

However, there is one notable exception —the train between Hanoi and Lao Cai (Sapa), which offers a deluxe sleeper experience rather than merely transportation. This unique journey ranges from $30 to $80, depending on whether you choose shared or VIP air-conditioned cabins.

(My experience: I tried the Chapa Express (one supplier of the deluxe trains). The train was clean and the bed was comfortable. Water, banana, tea & coffee bags, oreo & toothbrushes were given. One drawback is the noise during the ride, affecting sleep quality, but the luxurious train experience is still worth trying.)

Transportation Costs Within the City

Last spring my wife and I finally made it to Vietnam , and we were honestly so blown away. Being a travel editor here at Rough Guides, it’s always been a place I’ve wanted to visit. At the same time, I hadn’t been before and didn’t really know what to expect! Here I’ve collected some tips and advice on how I planned my trip to Vietnam.

A trip to Vietnam offers a unique adventure. From ancient Hanoi to imperial, romantic Hue, coastal Hoi An with its atmospheric ruins to burgeoning Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is known today, Vietnam is both an exciting and a rewarding destination.

We decided that we wanted to visit Vietnam in the spring because the weather is usually the most mild then.

The temperatures during our trip seem to range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), and I heard that the humidity was a lot lower compared to the summer months.

A close second choice would have been to visit during the autumn, and next time I’ll probably come back then to see the harvest season in full swing.

We wanted to avoid the rainy season, from May to October. If you go during this time, you do get the benefit of it being less crowded. However, you have to be ready for heavy and frequent rain. To us, it was worth dealing with more people and slightly higher prices to be in comfortable weather.

Our trip ended up being around two weeks, and for us that was a perfect amount of time. We were able to explore multiple regions, including Hanoi , Ha Long Bay , Hue , Hoi An , and Ho Chi Minh City , without feeling rushed. 

I think if we had cut it any bit shorter, it would have been a bit stressful, as there is so much to see and do in Vietnam. 

Of course, more time would have always been nice! If you are planning a trip to more than one country in Southeast Asia, I would say a bare minimum would be 10 days in Vietnam . This allows you to experience the highlights and adjust from jet lag comfortably.

This is by far the hardest part of planning a trip! Our trip was 14 days , and we spent 8 days in the North and 6 days in the South. Most start in the South and travel North, but we did the opposite to avoid crowds. It was also cheaper for us to fly home from Ho Chi Minh City.

Picking the best things to do during your trip can be hard to narrow down. Here’s some of our favourite things we did:

In the north , we started in Hanoi and visited the Old Quarter . From there we took a cruise in Ha Long Bay which was absolutely stunning.  We also visited Ninh Binh, often referred to as "Ha Long Bay on land," with gorgeous landscapes and ancient temples.

In the central region , we explored Hue, because of its rich history and beautiful pagodas, and the charming town of Hoi An, known for its well-preserved ancient town and lantern-lit streets.

In the south , we of course made our way to Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon), visited the Cu Chi Tunnels to learn about Vietnam's wartime history, and took a boat trip through the Mekong Delta to see the lush, tropical landscapes and floating markets.

There is public transportation in larger cities in Vietnam (most of which is cash-only, by the way).  Most people fly into Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and transport from there. We opted to have a taxi pick us up from Hanoi Airport to our accommodation.

Once in the country, Grab was super handy. If you’re familiar with Uber, it’s the same idea. You can use Grab for cars and motorbikes . It was a super convenient option for getting around cities. 

We also took trains at points, which was a comfortable and scenic way to travel between cities. The buses were certainly an experience but quite a bit less comfortable . Renting motorbikes for a few days allowed us to explore more remote areas at our own pace and was a lot of fun. 

Most hotels, restaurants, cafes, and tourist attractions in Vietnam offer free Wi-Fi access. Still, it’s important to have some kind of service in case of emergency or in case of getting lost.

We ended up going for a prepaid SIM card when we got to Hanoi. These are widely available across the city, and they usually come with a generous data allowance and options for calls and texts. We picked up one at the airport. The process was straightforward, and the connection was reliable.

That said, double check that you have a phone that allows you to insert a SIM card, as some smartphones don’t have this feature.

Luckily, Vietnam is known for being pretty affordable. The conversion rate was a little confusing from Vietnamese Dong to US Dollar (1$ = 25,500 VND). 

On average, we ended up spending about $60-100 each per day. This budget allowed us to stay in comfortable accommodations, enjoy a variety of meals, and use mostly public transit. We could have easily spent more if we had stayed in a resort or booked more private tours. Seasoned backpackers and budget travelers could definitely get by on less. 

In general, we tried to plan our itinerary to be prepared for extra costs. It’s not often that we are able to come to Vietnam or south east Asia in general, so we wanted to make the most of the trip.

Since we both love to research before a trip, we ended up spending a lot of time finding the “best” places to eat . In reality, our favortie meals came from when we simply walked around and found a street food stall. Instead of finding reviews online, we simply went to places that seemed crowded. 

Each region in Vietnam has its own specialties . Don't miss the chance to try unique dishes like banh xeo (sizzling pancakes) in the south or bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) in the north.

You’ll want to bring a versatile set of clothes, especially if you plan on hitting both North and South Vietnam in one trip. 

In the North , it can get a tad chilly, especially during the cooler months. Layers are key, so pack lightweight sweaters or jackets that you can easily add or remove as needed. 

In the South , you’ll find that the weather is a lot more tropical. You’ll want to bring lightweight and breathable shorts, t-shirts, and lightweight dresses or skirts.

If you’re planning on visiting historical sites or temples , it’s important to dress modestly out of respect. Consider bringing long, lightweight pants or skirts and tops that cover your shoulders. This will help you stay comfortable in the heat while also adhering to local customs. 

No matter where you go, don’t forget the essentials: comfy walking shoes, a hat or cap for sun protection, sunscreen, and bug spray. Personally I’d rather pack light rather than having to carry large suitcases in the heat.

We debated whether to opt for guided tours or take our own DIY approach. Every tour we ended up paying for turned out to be worth it. 

Especially the day we spent on the Mekong Delta , the tour wasn’t particularly expensive, and we were able to see so much more than we would have on our own.  Not only did we visit remote villages and floating markets, but our guide also shared fascinating anecdotes and historical context.

Our tour also included the cost of transportation and came with meals — definitely worth it!

Making mistakes while traveling is all part of the process, but to save you some grief, here’s a few things I wish I had considered before we left. 

Overnight trains

We both agreed that next time we go to Vietnam, we will plan our train rides at night to save money. This tip is especially useful for heavy sleepers.

We did this twice, and both times we were excited to have more time to spend at our destination. Traveling from one place to another takes longer than you might think, so overnight trains can be convenient and cost-effective, if you don’t mind sleeping on a train .

Itinerary overload

Being our first time in Vietnam and being avid travel enthusiasts, we ended up with a long list of things we wanted to do . In retrospect, we didn’t get to everything we had planned. 

The heat and jet lag definitely slowed us down (the journey from California took us 33 hours!). We could have easily added an extra week to our itinerary to allow for a more relaxed pace.

Low crime: but look out for scams

While violent crime is extremely rare in Vietnam, petty theft does happen from time to time. You’ll want to keep an eye on your valuables, and keep any bag your carrying with you on your front.

One taxi we took let us know once we had arrived to our destination that the meter was broken, and we ended up paying a lot more than usual. After that, we stuck to using mostly Grab for taxis. That said, we both felt pretty safe the entire time we were in the country. 

Get to the airport early

If you’re choosing to fly domestically in Vietnam, you’ll want to arrive ideally three hours before your flight. Check in and security took us a while to get through, and we really could have benefited from showing up a tad earlier.

The siren song of Vietnam has brought many travelers to its shores in search of incredible landscapes, pearl-white beaches , chaotic and vibrant cities, and one of the warmest welcomes in the world.

The tough decision for travelers isn't whether they should visit Vietnam, it's how they choose what to do with so many incredible options. Do you start in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)? Do you swap the big city experience for the beaches and seafood suppers of Phu Quoc island? Do you dive headlong into the history of a dozen rival empires, or embrace the dynamic, modern Vietnam that has emerged from the aftermath of conflict?

No matter what you want your vacation to look like, accept that you'll never cover everything in one trip and embrace it as a reason to return. Here are 15 incredible things to do that need to be on your Vietnam to-do list.

1. Embrace past and future Vietnam in historic Hanoi

The vibrant capital of the former North Vietnam – and today the capital of the nation – Hanoi is where old and new Vietnam come together. Traces of the imperial past float like ghosts in a city surging skywards – hawkers drift through the narrow lanes of the Old Quarter selling snacks from traditional yoke baskets, while the surrounding buildings are lit up with advertising displays and strip lights.

Exploring at street level is highly atmospheric and fantastic fun – mix up days visiting wartime and imperial relics with evenings feasting on some of Asia’s finest food and late nights dousing the sticky summer heat with glasses of bia hoi (local draught beer).

Planning tip: As they say, Hanoi rocks, and the best places to rock out like a local are lively live music venues such as the moody Binh Minh Jazz Club and keep-it-loud Hanoi Rock City .

2. Find your own island in the sun in Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay

Okay, we concede that Halong Bay – the atmospheric sprawl of rocky coves and eroded karst islands to the east of Hanoi – is firmly discovered, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to discover away from the cruise ship crowds. If a tour on a diesel-powered luxury junk doesn’t appeal, consider hiring a kayak to potter around Lan Ha Bay near Cat Ba Island , where outcrops sculpted by wind and waves emerge from the water like the teeth of sea monsters.

Alternatively, leave the diesel fumes behind in calmer Bai Tu Long Bay to the north, where more jungle-capped islands shelter low-key resorts and languorous beaches.

3. Get your fill of imperial cuisine in handsome Hue

Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty held court in Hue until 1945, and the city’s damaged but still impressive historic relics feel somehow closer to imperial China than to the rest of Southeast Asia. However, for many travelers, it’s all about the food. More than half of Vietnam's estimated 3000 local dishes are believed to have originated in Hue, from the vermicelli-noodle-based bun bo Hue and crispy banh khoai pancakes topped with shrimp and pork to canapé-like, soft-and-crunchy banh ram it dumplings. The lavish imperial cuisine known as am thuc cung dinh – created by the emperors’ loyal chefs – can still be sampled in some of Hue's top restaurants, such as Thin Gia Vien and Hoang Phu .

Planning tip: Don’t restrict yourself to posh imperial banquets; for less than 100,000 dong you can gorge on tasty Hue staples at busy stalwart restaurants such as Madam Thu or at food stalls on the streets.

4. Meet Vietnam’s imperial leaders in the Hue tombs

Hue gets a second spot on the list thanks to the astounding imperial tombs, which preserve the mortal remains of a string of Nguyen emperors and empresses, from dynasty-founding Gia Long to Khai Dinh , the last Nguyen emperor to be buried on Vietnamese soil (his son, Bao Dai, the final emperor of Vietnam, was interred in the Cimetière de Passy in Paris ).

While crowds mob the Citadel and Imperial Enclosure, you can still find peaceful moments for contemplation by skipping the boat tours and renting a motorcycle to visit the extravagant mausoleums along the Perfume River. Don’t miss the towering  Thien Mu pagoda , looming over the north bank on the city fringes.

Detour: Equipped with two wheels, you can also buzz north from Hue to enjoy unspoiled dune beaches on the sandy barrier island stretching north and south from Thuan An.

5. Learn to make soups, stir-fries and salads on a cooking course

There’s no better souvenir to bring home from Vietnam than being able to prepare your own Vietnamese feast. Indeed, Vietnamese food arguably has a bigger dinner-party cachet than more familiar Thai cuisine.

Up and down the country, you’ll find cooking courses that start with a fragrant market trip to buy fresh ingredients and local herbs and end with a banquet of the dishes you’ve prepared, covering everything from summer rolls to pho noodle soup.

Hoi An is the most popular destination for aspiring chefs – small and personal Green Bamboo Cooking School is highly recommended. There are also good cooking schools in Hue, Hanoi and HCMC.

6. Unravel Vietnam’s complex religious history in My Son

While travelers mob the regal assembly halls, pagodas and historic homes of Hoi An, nearby My Son offers a calmer vision of Vietnam’s rich and layered past – particularly if you come in the afternoon. The big lure here is the atmospheric collection of UNESCO-listed Hindu temple ruins surrounded by jungle in a loop of the sacred Thu Bon river.

Sharing many architectural features with the Khmer temples of Cambodia and Thailand , these crumbling, red-brick shrines were built between the 4th and 14th centuries by the Hindu kingdom of Champa, whose descendants – the Cham people – can still be found in pockets in central Vietnam. One of the world’s youngest faiths, the Cao Dai religion was founded in the Mekong Delta town of Tay Ninh in 1926, fusing elements of ancestor worship, folk religions, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Roman Catholicism, with the ultimate goal of freeing the soul from the endless cycle of reincarnation.

To explore its complex customs, head to the cathedral-like Cao Dai Holy See in Tay Ninh. Inside, you’ll see weapon-toting statues, an all-seeing eye, and even a Communist-looking red star – the sect reveres, amongst other figures, Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mohammed and even French novelist Victor Hugo.

Planning tip: Visitors can enter the shrine to witness prayers four times a day; if you have time to kill before or after a visit, detour 15km (9.3 miles) northeast to Nui Ba Den mountain. You can take a gondola then hike to reach its summit cave temples, then whoosh back downhill on a luge-style slide.

8. Rumble through the highlands by motorcycle

Vietnam largely moves on two wheels, and a motorcycle is by far the most enjoyable way to explore the hill country of the northwest , even if it takes some courage to adjust to the driving conditions, the errant livestock, and the steep, winding roads. Rent a quality bike in Hanoi and pop your wheels on the train to Lao Cai, to avoid the nerve-jangling ride out of the capital.

Once you reach the heart of the hill country, you can rumble out to outlying villages far from the tourist crowds for epic views and nights in charming homestays run by members of Vietnam’s tribal minorities.

Planning tip: You’ll need an international driving permit to ride legally in Vietnam, and this is only available for some nationalities. Many travelers manage to rent a motorcycle without a permit, but if things go wrong, you won’t be covered by your travel insurance.

9. See the American War through Vietnamese eyes

Modern-day Vietnam is moving on from conflict, but the battlefields from the American War still linger as a sobering reminder of what people had to go through to get to this point. Sites of American losses such as Hamburger Hill in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are etched into the popular consciousness, but the wartime tunnels at Cu Chi near HCMC and Vinh Moc near Hue offer a glimpse of the Vietnamese experience, as ordinary people went to extraordinary lengths to resist the world’s greatest superpower.

10. Visit villages in the "Asian Alps"

The former French Hill station of Sapa is surrounded by mountains so impressive that French colonizers called them the “Tonkinese Alps,” and the surrounding villages of the H'Mong and Dao ethnic minorities have become popular destinations for hikers – and somewhat commercialized in the process.

For a taste of the scenic serenity that first drew travelers to these lush green hills, head instead to drier, calmer Bac Ha , or the trails and mountain roads around Ha Giang province, tucked against the border with China and seemingly sculpted by the hands of the gods. Stay in hospitable homestays and explore markets, peaceful stilt-house villages, French-era relics and soaring limestone pinnacles, away from the maddening crowds.

Planning tip: There's a lot of competition for the title of best vista in Vietnam but the lookouts gazing over the Dong Van Karst Plateau are strong contenders. The area is designated as a UNESCO Geopark, and the trip from Yen Minh to Dong Van and over the Mai Pi Leng Pass to Meo Vac is particularly spectacular.

11. Find a perfect cup of coffee in the Central Highlands

It was the French colonizers who brought coffee from the Arabian peninsula to Vietnam, but it was the farmers of the Southwest Highlands who mastered the art of coaxing quality beans from these undulating hills. Rising to 1600m (5250ft), Dak Lak Province provides the perfect terroir for growing robusta beans, and the regional capital of Buon Ma Thuot is a great place to tour plantations and track down a quality cup of ca phe , particularly during the annual coffee festival in March. If you insist on arabica beans, head to Dalat and visit the community K'Ho Coffee cooperative, supporting local coffee growers from the K’Ho minority.

12. Enter the world’s largest cave in Phong Nha

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in north central Vietnam is a lost world of jungles and caverns, including the world’s largest, Hang Son Doong. The scale of this wonder of nature is simply mind-blowing – a 747 airplane could fly through the cave’s main tunnel.

Parts of the limestone ceiling have collapsed, bringing in natural sunlight, so Hang Son Doong contains an entire rainforest ecosystem with flying foxes, rare langurs, and even a small population of tigers. Since 2012, one tour company – Oxalis Adventure – has been allowed to take a strictly limited number of visitors into Hang Son Doong on challenging four-day treks; the price is stratospheric but so is the scenery.

13. Walk with the ghosts of French Indochina in Ho Chi Minh City

The former capital of South Vietnam may have changed its name from Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) , but the past remains close to the surface, from the American War relics in the HCMC Museum and War Remnants Museum to the city’s elegant French-built mansions and civic buildings – many now housing museums, restaurants and boutique hotels.

14. Bask on beautiful beaches

It was the beaches of Phu Quoc Island and Danang – developed as a playground for GIs during the American War – that put Vietnam on the map for seaside vacations, but both have developed into lively resorts. To find unspoiled stretches of sand, modern-day castaways aim their sights at the kitesurfing beaches around Mui Ne , the island sands of the Con Dao archipelago and long, languorous Hong Van Beach on Co To Island in Bai Tu Long Bay .

Planning tip: The best time for a beach trip varies as you move around the country. In central Vietnam, skies are brightest from January to August, while December to April is the beach window on the south coast, and northern Vietnam sees plenty of dry days from October to April.

15. Float on the Mekong Delta

Reaching out into the East Sea like an enormous hand, the mighty Mekong Delta marks the end point of Southeast Asia’s longest river – a 4350km (2700 mile) monster, rising on the Tibetan plateau and emptying to the south of Ho Chi Minh City. This waterlogged wonderland is Vietnam’s rice bowl, nurturing a network of sleepy towns and stilt villages whose residents use the river as their primary artery for life and trade.

For comfortable exploring, book an overnight cruise along the main channel near Can Tho or a cross-border trip to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Russia's Putin in Vietnam seeks new "security architecture"

HANOI (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin said he wanted to build a "reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region during a state visit to Vietnam on Thursday, part of a two-nation trip to Asia seen as show of defiance to the West.

A day after signing a mutual defence agreement with North Korea, Putin received a 21-gun salute at a military ceremony in Vietnam, was embraced by two of its Communist leaders and lavishly praised by one of them.

Putin's visit has drawn criticism from the United States and its allies, who treat the Russian leader as a pariah and have protested that he should not be given a stage on which to defend Russia's war in Ukraine.

Russia and Vietnam signed agreements on issues including energy, underlining Moscow's pivot to Asia after the West imposed sanctions on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.

"We are firmly committed to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam, which remains among the priorities of Russia's foreign policy," Putin was quoted as saying by Russian media.

"We are ready to continue active joint work on a wide range of topics, including economic, scientific and technical ties, defence, security and humanitarian contacts."

He was quoted by Russia's TASS news agency as saying the two countries shared an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs".

The 11 pacts signed in Hanoi were not on the same level as the landmark agreement reached in North Korea.

But Putin's warm welcome was an achievement for the Russian leader, who has an outstanding International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, charges he denies.

Russia and Vietnam are not members of the ICC.

"Putin's triumphal reception in Hanoi will mark a counter-point to Russia’s recent setbacks," said Carlyle Thayer, emeritus professor at the Australian Defence Force Academy, listing the recent Ukraine conference in Switzerland and new European Union sanctions on Russia.

"Putin and the Russian propaganda machine will play on the theme that Western attempts to isolate Russia are not working," Thayer added.

'BAMBOO DIPLOMACY'

The military ceremony put on to greet Putin, who was embraced by both Vietnamese President To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, was the kind reserved for the highest heads of state and rolled out when U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Vietnam last year.

The Vietnamese president congratulated Putin on his recent re-election and praised Russia's achievements, including "domestic political stability", as the two met in Hanoi.

"Once again, congratulations to our comrade for receiving overwhelming support during the recent presidential election, underlining the confidence of the Russian people," Lam said

The two presidents witnessed the exchange of 11 agreements and memorandums of understanding, including deals on oil and gas, nuclear science and education.

“From the Vietnamese perspective, Hanoi is practicing its 'bamboo diplomacy', in which it tries to maintain good relationships with both Moscow and Washington despite their mutual hostility," said Alexander Vuving, of the Hawaii-based Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies.

Putin, who arrived in the early hours on Thursday, is on the final stop of a two-nation tour of Asia after concluding the defence pact with North Korea. Putin has also visited China since he was sworn in for a fifth term in May.

U.S., EU CRITICISMVietnam's hosting of Putin was criticised by the United States, an important partner which upgraded diplomatic relations with Hanoi last year and is Vietnam's top export market, and by the EU.

A U.S. embassy statement this week said no country should be giving Putin a platform to promote Russia's war in Ukraine.

An EU delegation spokesperson in Vietnam said Hanoi had the right to develop its own foreign policy, but said Russia's war in Ukraine proved Moscow did not respect international law.

Russia was hit with U.S.-led Western sanctions after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

Despite concern over the visit in the U.S. and its allies, Hanoi may have correctly calculated it will not suffer material consequences, said Murray Hiebert, a senior associate of the Southeast Asia Program at Washington’s the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

One reason, he said, is that Washington heavily relies on its good relations with Vietnam to counter its rivalry with China in the region.

"I don't think it'll have a long-term impact... the U.S. often gives them a bit of a pass," Hiebert said.
