As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Available on Norwegian Jewel in April, May and June 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship. 

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. Speightstown (aka Little Bristol) is a seaport (locode BBSPT) and Barbados' second largest town with population around 4,000. The capital Bridgetown is approx 20 km (12 mi) to the south along the island's west coast. The town was named after William Speight (a wealthy and influential merchant) who owned the land where Speightstown is located.

The settlement was founded in the 17th century (around 1630) as Barbados's principal port serving the export of sugar and other commodities to Great Britain (directly to Bristol and London ). Speightstown's current-day economy is largely based on tourism and shopping (especially retail on Queen's Street).

Moscow: question for those who have gone from St Petersburg

I have read many of the threads that discuss whether or not Moscow is worth the expense and long day, especially when there are only 2 days in port.  I realize there are two strong opinions from people with one side saying it is worth it and the other side says stay in St Petersburg. We have decided to go Moscow on day 1 of our visit. 

So, those who have done the long trip to Moscow....did you go with the cruise ship or a private guide?   If a private guide, who and would you recommend them?  Did you take the train both ways or fly one direction?

Been to Moscow several times. We have used the Sapsan both ways and have also flown both ways - never a combo of the train/plane. We enjoyed the Sapsan more than the flight. We have NOT travelled to Moscow when arriving by cruise ship so have no comment on your particular situation regarding a one day tour with only 2 days in St. Pete.  Good luck - hope the visit meets your expectations.

Thanks for the info.  Good to know you enjoyed the train more than the plane - I would expect we would too as flying is typically more hassle than taking the train.  

We decided to book the trip to Moscow with the cruise ship after learning that if we miss the train or plane we don’t get a refund in addition to missing Moscow.  And, I’ve had friends who’s ship missed the St Petersburg stop due to weather.

Moscow is a great city but I would rather spend all two days in St Petersburg. Some years ago we had almost a week there and still it doesn’t seem enough. We also had one day in Moscow and the journey arranged by the local travel agency was well organized and comfortable. In a view of time restrictions of the journey (we spent almost 8 hours on the train and just 6-7 hours in the city) one day in Moscow still felt a little rushed. Anyway, enjoy planning your trip and hope you have a great time in Russia!

Just make sure the day you are going to Moscow, it is not one of their holidays or even a day before a holiday.

Moscow is an amazing city but it is frustrating when Red Square is closed for parades, etc.... It is hard to determine when they close it but it is definitely closed for their holidays. When it is closed - you can only walk around the exterior of the square and look in.

I have 2 days in St. Petersburg and am thinking about this possibility. I think it’s hard to do this with 2 days. The first day will take longer time to go ashore because of the immigration process. The second day is not possible due to the early all abroad time. It seems that it’s only worth doing it if there are 3 days in St. Petersburg especially when a full day of touring in Moscow is preferred.

For 2 days - spend the time in St. Petersburg. There is so much to see there. Save this for a 2nd trip.

When we were in St. Petersburg we were also very interested in visiting Moscow. We were already in Russia why not visit as much places as we could, right? We used Anastasia Travel for our St. Petersburg tour and also asked them to include Moscow. They were very helpful and were very much willing to arrange a day trip to Moscow for us but they suggested we just stay in St. Petersburg since we only had 2 days. They were kind enough to explain that we would just waste time and money if me push through with the Moscow trip. We would spend more time on the train instead of using the time to explore and enjoy the sights. They were actually correct and we ended up enjoying a wonderful 2-day tour in St. Petersburg. I guess we'll have to go back to see Moscow and make sure to stay longer!

When we went to St Petersburg we had the same dilemma. We decided not to go to Moscow and didn’t regret it one bit. There is so much to see! If you spend the 2 days in St Petersburg you can go and see Peterhof Palace on one of the days. We were on a Princess cruise and like flowslow, we booked our private tours with Katharina from Anastasia Travel.   This way we used our time to the fullest to see as much as possible at our pace with a personal guide. (We are not fond of the big group tours from the cruise lines).

We have two days and decided only staying in SPB for both days. We are thinking of forming a private tour with other cruisers on another forum as the CC roll call for that cruise is so quiet. We are looking into Anastasia Travel as well. Very excited to go!

I'm not sure about customs when coming in on a cruise ship. We were told that if we wanted to leave the ship, we would have to be on a tour, either a ships tour or private tour. I know we had to show our tour tickets at customs to be allowed to go further. We chose Alla tours and they were fantastic. We were docked in St. Petersburg for 3 days and we did go to Moscow on the Capsan train on the 2nd day. It was a VERY long day. We had to meet our group at 6:00am and were on the train at 7:00am. We arrived back at to our cabin at 1:30am the next day. It was a wonderful day and we're so glad we went but if we were in St. Petersburg for only 2 days, I probably wouldn't spend a day in Moscow. It is a 4 hour train ride each way, and if you need to be back to the ship to depart, it may not leave you much time in Moscow. The 8 hours we spent there, wasn't nearly enough. Traffic is horrible and we ended up getting off our bus and taking the subway to Red Square. Those 8 hours allowed us a tour of Red Square, which was phenomenal as well as a quick walk through GUM department store and a ride on the subway with several stops to see the mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers that are in the corridors of the subway stops.

But.....there is so much to see in St. Petersburg , the 2 days we spent there, were a whirl.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure you're in line to get off the ship before the ship arrives in port. We were in line an hour early and there were still about 20 people ahead of us. We found that the cruise ship allowed their tour groups to get off the ship first, so when we got to customs, the lines were outrageous. It took us about an hour in line and we were late starting our tour. I had organized the tour with Alla and had advertised it on our cruise forum here at Cruise Critic. There were 12 of us and we met up on the ship each morning and went through customs together so we all met the tour bus at the same time. That was very helpful!

The lines the first day were the worst and days 2 and 3 went much more quickly. Also, everyone was getting off the ship at the same time on Day 1, but tours met and left at different times on Days 2 and 3.

This is one of the reasons that we decided to use the cruise ship to go to Moscow our first day in St Petersburg.

Yes, as others have noted, there is MUCH to see in Saint Petersburg and in spending a week there one will barely scratch the surface - the same is true for Moscow.

It sounds like you want to get a "taste" of both cities - don't allow anyone to "throw water" on your plans as you best know what you want to do. You can always return for an extended visit.  😉

No, our ship tour is going by train there and back unless I misread something.  You are right...we just want a taste of both cities.  In fact, that is what we get from all cruise port stops - just a taste.  We are never there long enough to the see the area completely.

Interesting - I thought that the ship tours flew to Moscow when in port for only 2 days. Hope you will post upon return and let us know how it went.

Double checked and it says we go to Moscow on the high speed train.   Come back the same way.   From all I’ve read it takes a little longer (ship to Moscow sites) to fly than to take the train.  

I've been thinking about that - and I might be wrong, but it seems to me an SPB-Moscow combo over a 3-day cruise is one of the few remaining cases where obtaining a full-fledged Russian visa actually makes sense (especially for families/groups and especially if one is willing to do some DIY trip planning). 

Just to make sure, though - for those staying on the ship, is there some kind of curfew, or are you able to come and go as you please?

If you have a Russian visa there is no curfew - you may come and go as you wish. In fact, if you so choose, you can spend the entire time in the city (staying at a hotel in either Moscow or St. Petersburg) rather than returning to your ship each evening - but ONLY if you have a visa.

That is what my research shows too.  A quick google search showed the tourist visas for US citizens are $160.  I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa.  We’ve gotten most of the visas that are a pain to get and I’m tired of doing that.

I'm just trying to come up with a reasonably conservative number - what can one realistically expect to pay for a mad 1-day Moscow dash if they go DIY.

For a regular SPB-only itinerary, visa doesn't seem to make sense - not only price-wise, but also from the standpoint of convenience - all the local operators have their itineraries down to a science.

With Moscow, though, it's not so clear-cut.

I found that most of the tour operators will give you a tour but no guarantee that you make it to Moscow because you will miss the train if debarkation is too slow.  I found one tour that offers a 2 day tour with a flight to Moscow day 1 and train back and St Petersburg day 2.   Seriously considered them.   I briefly thought about getting a visa and spending the night in Moscow but never priced everything out. If you look into that I would love to see what you find. Probably not for us though because I want to see some of both cities.

I have visited Russia multiple times. I received my latest 3 year visa in May and here are the associated costs:

Single/Double/Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee = $50

Total = $248   (this is your total if you apply in person at one of the 4 consulates located in the USA - since I don't live near a Russian consulate, I must use the more costly mail option)

SO ... here is what I actually paid:

Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee by mail = $120

Return shipping/handling fee = $35

Total = $353

Totally worth the fee as I spend multiple weeks in Russia yearly and prefer DIY - personally, I would not consider a visa if it was a one time visit via cruise.

So, for DIY, added to the visa expense, one must add the cost of the sapsan train (or flight), Moscow transportation (metro is great), food & associated entrance fees to the Kremlin (and whatever else one has the time/desire to visit).

FYI: There is a HOHO in both Moscow & St. Petersburg.

Okay, I think the diy budget might be something like ₽20,000 (about $300) per person. This includes:

Train tickets: ₽9000 (5+4); Kremlin+armory: 1700 (1000+700)

Boat ride:600

Meals: 3000 (1500 per casual meal)

Contingencies (Uber ride if needed, etc): 2500. 

It's based on a number of assumptions, so real-life mileage will vary - please let me know if you identify some glaring omissions or errors.

Assumptions:

Done on day 2 of three.

Good weather (lots of outside/walking time)

Earliest Sapsan to Moscow, overnight double decker from Moscow (no hotel stays)

Train tickets purchased at least 30 days in advance, economy for Sapsan and economy plus for the double decker (includes a bottle of water and a piece of gingerbread).

All group members are adults

Done on a day when the Kremlin, Red Sq, and other Moscow attractions are actually open.

Boat ride via watertrams-radisson.ru (the cheapest option with English audio guide)

Sample itinerary:

leave SPB on Sapsan 743a (5:30am), sleep on the train.

Arrive Moscow 9am

DIY Metro tour until 11am

Kremlin excursion (cathedral Sq, DIY) 11:30

Armory excursion (audioguide) 12:30 

Quick lunch (at GUM stolovaya or fast food chains at Manezhnaya sq) : 2 to 3pm.

Walk to Zaryadye boat pier via Alexander's garden, Red Sq, Zaryadye. Boats leave every 30 minutes. Route: Zaryadye- Gorky Park - luzhniki- Ukraina - turnaround - sparrow hills - Gorky Park. Time on board: 2 hrs. 

Gorky Park/muzeon (5:30 to 7:30). 

Head back (metro) towards red sq for evening walk/dinner (tverskaya-kamergersky-b.dmitrovka-metropol-nikolskaya area)

Need to be back at the train station by 10:30 to catch the 006aa train departing at 10:50. 

Back to SPB at 6:47 am.

Ukraine war latest: Russian town hit in new wave of strikes - as Kremlin responds to NATO chief's nuclear comments

 An overnight attack on two oil depots in Russia's Rostov region was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), according to reports.

Russian authorities reported fires spread across 5,000 cubic metres in the town of Azov, with dozens of firefighters trying to tackle the blaze (see 08:30 post).

According to the Kyiv Independent, the SBU's drone attack successfully targeted 22 oil storage tanks.

"The SBU will continue to implement 'drone sanctions' against the Russian oil refining complex and reduce the economic potential of the enemy, which provides the aggressor with resources for waging war against Ukraine," the source added.

Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelenskyy says the communique signed by more than 80 nations at last weekend's Swiss peace summit is still open for more to join.

The document, issued at the end of a Ukraine-led peace conference in Burgenstock, supported Ukraine's territorial integrity in the face of Russia's invasion.

About 100 countries took part in the conference, but Russia was not invited and China snubbed the event. Attenders were mostly from Europe, the US and other western allies, but included countries from Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Some key regional powers were among those not to sign the communique, including Brazil, India, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.

Addressing this at the end of the summit, Mr Zelenskyy said that "unfortunately, there are people who are still balancing."

Today he announced that the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople - one of the churches that helps make up the Eastern Orthodox Church - had signed the communique.

Mr Zelenskyy added that the document would remain open for signatures and that he was "confident that more countries and international organisations will join."

The streets of Pyongyang have been lined with images and flags of  Vladimir Putin.

The Russian president is due to touch down on North Korean soil for the first time in 24 years today where he will meet with the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

And the red carpet is being rolled out already for the visit of Mr Putin, with state television broadcaster KCTV showing concerts of Russian military while the streets have been lined with Russian flags and images of the president. 

Anton Gerashchenko, former Ukranian advisor to the internal affairs minister, shared footage on X of Pyongyang's Russian-themed welcome.

Mr Putin and his entourage - set to include Russia's defence and security ministers - are expected to arrive in North Korea this evening local time.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the remote Siberian city of Yakutsk today ahead of his visit to North Korea. 

The Russian leader is heading to Pyongyang to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. 

Mr Putin will meet regional governor Aisen Nikolayev in Yakutsk before travelling to North Korea later today.

The world coverage chief of the Wall Street Journal says he is hopeful that the imprisonment of American journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia will end soon. 

Mr Gershkovich is due to stand trial on espionage charges in Russia where he is accused of "gathering secret information" for the CIA.  

Russian prosecutors said Mr Gershkovich was caught "red-handed", with the FSB state spy service claiming that he was trying to obtain military secrets. 

He denies the allegations but, if found guilty, could face up to 20 years in prison. 

Since his arrest, Mr Gershkovich has been held at Moscow's Lefortovo Prison - a notorious jail used during Joseph Stalin's purges, when executions were carried out in the basement. 

The trial will take place 900 miles from Moscow, behind closed doors in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, where Mr Gershkovich was first detained.   

"I think that having a journalist taken prisoner, which hasn't happened since the Cold War in Russia, sort of transcends the [Ukraine] war and is kind of fundamental attack on the freedom of the press which really underpins all of our free societies," Mr Gershkovich's colleague, Gordon Fairclough, told Sky News today. 

"It's sadly not surprising, but it is incredibly disheartening to see a colleague falsely accused, and effectively being held hostage to geopolitics.

"I got a letter from him a couple of weeks ago. He's quite a resilient guy and seems to be keeping his spirits up and his sense of humour is intact." 

US President Joe Biden called Russia's actions "totally illegal," while US state department spokesman Matthew Miller previously said there was "absolutely zero credibility" to the charges against Mr Gershkovich. 

There is now a growing expectation that the situation could be resolved through a prisoner swap between the US and Russia. 

Mr Fairclough added: "We expect the way this to be resolved and the way Russian officials have signalled this would be resolved would be through some kind of prisoner swap with the US government.  

"We know that talks are ongoing between the US and Russia on this subject."

Several dozen firefighters have been tackling a fire in the Russian town of Azov today following a drone strike, officials said.

Several oil storage tanks were set ablaze by the attack early this morning in Russia's southern region of Rostov, which borders Ukraine.

Russia's ministry of emergency situations said on Telegram that the fire had spread across 5,000 cubic metres.

Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region, wrote on Telegram that there were no casualties according to preliminary data.

These reports are yet to be verified.

If confirmed, it would be the second consecutive day of strikes on the region, after a suspected Ukrainian attack triggered a large explosion at an electricity substation overnight into Monday.

The report of comments from NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg yesterday have been the source of some discussion among nuclear and diplomatic analysts.

Mr Stoltenberg told The Telegraph that NATO members were consulting about deploying more nuclear weapons and placing them on standby in the face of a growing threat from Russia and China.

And while some figures in Moscow sought to downplay the significance of the remarks, Kremlin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov was more condemnatory in his response.

"This is nothing but another escalation of tension," he said, adding that the comments appeared to contradict the communique issued over the weekend at the peace summit in Switzerland.

The talks were held at the behest of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with Russia not invited to attend.

The communique, signed by more than 80 countries, said any threat or use of nuclear weapons in the Ukraine context was inadmissible.

Mr Stoltenberg later said Russia was trying to create confusion and that his comments referred to the modernisation of NATO's nuclear deterrent, including the replacement of F-16 jets with F-35s.

NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah said: "We have an ongoing modernisation programme to replace legacy weapons and aircraft. Beyond that, there are no significant changes to our nuclear deterrent."

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence claims 1,230 Russian soldiers and officers were killed and wounded in action over the last 24 hours.

That brings Russia's reported total combat manpower losses since the invasion started to around 528,620.

Ukraine's military also claims to have destroyed 16 Russian tanks, 20 armoured combat vehicles, 32 artillery systems, 20 UAVs and a cruise missile during the last day of fighting.

This will only be Vladimir Putin’s second visit to North Korea. The first was soon after he assumed office in 2000, nearly a quarter of a century ago.

That's a long time to wait for a return trip. Was it the hospitality? Or did he just have better options elsewhere?

Either way, it's very much a case of beggars can’t be choosers right now, with Tuesday's visit highlighting both Russia's isolation from the West and the blossoming friendship between these two pariah states.

What does North Korea offer Russia? A lot more than camaraderie. According to the US and others, it's supplying the Kremlin with weapons and ammunition to use in Ukraine.

In an interview with Bloomberg recently, South Korea's defence minister said the North had sent nearly five million artillery shells to Russia since September, as well as dozens of ballistic missiles.

Moscow and Pyongyang both deny the accusation but UN monitors claim to have seen evidence. In January, they concluded the remnants of a missile fired from Russia on Kherson was that of a North Korea-made Kwasong-11 series. Kyiv claims there are several more examples.

For North Korea, the closer ties are a big win. As well as food and fuel, analysts say Russia has provided the poverty-stricken nation with much-needed economic aid and diplomatic support.

In March, for example, Russia vetoed the UN resolution to renew the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring sanctions enforcement.

It's also assumed Moscow is supplying some technical know-how for Pyongyang's space and satellite programmes, after President Putin hosted Kim Jong Un at the Vostochny cosmodrone in Russia's Far East last September.

The stronger ties between the two is a major concern for the West and its Asian allies.

These are two leaders who like to warn how their fingers are poised over the red button. The primary fear in Washington and Seoul is that Russia could start supplying some of its nuclear know-how and missile technology, on top of the other assistance.

The Russian leader's entourage for the visit certainly raises eyebrows. It includes his new defence minister Andrei Belousov as well as Denis Manturov, the deputy prime minister responsible for defence. 

The official line from the Kremlin is that there's nothing to see here - yes, we might sign a security agreement, but it won't be directed against any other country.

Russia's "right" to develop good relationships with its neighbours "should not be of concern to anyone", Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Behind the scenes, though, they will no doubt delight in the disquiet the visit is causing. 

It's very much a diplomatic two-fingers to the West, which may bring tangible geopolitical benefits too.

If South Korea is considering providing weapons to Ukraine, for example, this might make them think twice about it.

Vladimir Putin has thanked North Korea for supporting his actions in Ukraine and said their countries will cooperate closely to overcome US led sanctions.

The Russian president will be in Pyongyang today for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - his first visit to the country in 24 years.

Mr Putin's comments appeared in an op-ed in North Korean state media hours before he was expected to arrive in the North for a two-day visit.

He said he appreciates North Korea's support of Russia in their invasion of Ukraine, adding that the two countries would continue to "resolutely oppose" what he described as Western ambitions to "to hinder the establishment of a multipolarised world order based on mutual respect for justice." 

Here's what he said on Pyongyang's support for the Ukraine war:

We highly appreciate the DPRK's firm support for Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, its solidarity with us on key international issues, and its readiness to defend common priorities and views on the platform of the UN. Pyongyang has been and remains our convinced supporter, ready to resolutely oppose the collective West's desire to prevent the establishment of a multipolar world order based on justice, mutual respect for sovereignty and consideration of each other's interests.

There was also a reference to the two nations developing unspecified trade and payment systems "that are not controlled by the West."

We are also ready to work closely together to make international relations more democratic and stable. To this end, we will develop alternative mechanisms of trade and mutual settlements beyond the control of the West and jointly oppose illegitimate unilateral restrictions. At the same time, we will build an architecture of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia.

There was lengthy comment on the role that the US is playing on the world stage right now, which Mr Putin described as a "global neo-colonial dictatorship based on double standards."

The Russian president accuses the US of trying to "prolong and inflame" the war in Ukraine and reaffirms Russia's apparent commitment to open "equal dialogue."

The US is trying hard to impose a so-called rules-based order on the world, which is, in fact, nothing but a global neo-colonial dictatorship based on double standards. They are doing everything to prolong and inflame with greater force the conflict in Ukraine, which they themselves provoked by supporting and organising the armed coup d'etat in Kiev in 2014 and then the war in Donbass. At the same time, all these years they have repeatedly rejected all our attempts to resolve the situation peacefully. Russia has been and will continue to be open to equal dialogue on all the most difficult issues. 

In reference to the combined actions of nations around the world arming Ukraine with weapons, and the economic sanctions placed on Russia, Mr Putin was defiant yet again.

He said all attempts to "contain and isolate" Russia had failed.

Our adversaries continue to supply the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv with money, weapons and intelligence, and allow and actually encourage it to use modern Western weapons and equipment to launch attacks on Russian territory (..) At the same time, they are trying to wear down our economy with more and more sanctions and provoke the growth of social and political tension inside the country.  But no matter how hard they try, all their attempts to contain and isolate Russia have failed.
