WILL WE SEE WHALES ON SEA VANCOUVER?

No, this is a city sightseeing adventure and it DOES NOT include whale watching. Vancouver, however, is home to a variety of birds and sea mammals and we may occasionally see dolphins, harbor seals, bald eagles, and other sea birds during adventures.

DO I NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION?

Reservations are definitely recommended. Adventures often sell out and we don’t want you to be disappointed.

DO TOURS RUN IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER?

Tours operate rain or shine! Safety is our priority and, in extreme weather conditions or high winds, adventures may be cancelled at the discretion of our qualified crew. We will be in touch should this be the case.

Vancouver FAQS

Still have questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions to get answers for any whale watching or Vancouver queries you may have.

What should I bring?

Please bring a reusable water bottle and a coffee tumbler, we will refill them for free! It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a tight-fitting hat, a camera to capture some memorable moments and, above all, your sense of adventure!

What should I wear whale watching?

It gets cold out on the water (trust us!), so we recommend windbreaker jackets, sweaters, long pants, and closed-toe shoes.

Desolation Sound and the Inside Passage

The geography on this route is a mesmerizing mix of narrow inlets to deep fjords and small rounded islands to towering glaciers. The scenery around these islands is arguably some of the most impressive on the British Columbia coast. There is a remarkable First Nations history in the area including sites in Lund, Cortes, Quadra, Toba Inlet and even Homfray Channel with several remaining relics and pictographs.

Southern Gulf Islands of the Salish Sea

With daylight hours spent cruising the coast and overnight in shoreside village accommodations, you’ll enjoy a complete Salish Sea Islands experience. The geology of these islands creates a fabulous cruising area. White Rock Sea Tours Inc

Guide to Vancouver’s Marine Wildlife

Vancouver boasts some of the most diverse and exciting marine wildlife in North America. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the areas to encounter the magnificent creatures that can be spotted off the coast.

Killer Whale, Breach, Orca, White Rock Sea Tours

The giants of the deep can be spotted throughout spring and summer off the coast of Vancouver. Grey Whales, Humpback Whales, and Killer Whales all make their way across the North Pacific Ocean as they pass through on the way from their way from their winter breeding grounds to feed in the nutrient-rich waters of the Arctic.

Orcas, often referred to as killer whales, are a big draw for many tourists, making whale watching tours the top of many peoples ‘Vancouver bucket list.’ In fact, Orcas are not whales at all, they are the largest member of the dolphin family, making them incredibly social and intelligent animals.

They inhabit vast swaths of the ocean across the world and are commonly seen along the western coast of the United States and Canada. Only a few decades ago we knew very little about this species. But over the last 40 years as researchers have made the trip to Vancouver Island and other areas of the Pacific Northwest to study the family pods, we have gained great insight into the way they live.

Orca can be observed all year round but more frequently in the summer when the salmon start to move inward to return to their eggs upriver.

Humpback Whales

There are two populations of Humpback Whales that can be observed passing along the British Columbia coast in Spring/Fall as they make their way to and from tropical climates in Hawaii and Mexico to the cooler oceans of Alaska to feed.

Unlike Orca, these whales have often been spotted alone as they do not make social groups. While they do not form lasting bonds with other whales, they do assist each other with hunting within their population and are known to help each other in herding together schools of fish such as herring and krill.

Over recent years the Humpback population has started to grow, and they are seen ever more frequently off the BC coast making it an almost certainly you will catch a glimpse of one if you head out on a whale watching tour.

Marine Birds

Bald Eagle, Sea Tour

Bald Eagles

Some exciting marine birds can be caught sight of in the coastal areas of Vancouver; the most noticeable is the Bald Eagle.

The Bald Eagle is one of the most iconic birds on the entire North American continent. With wingspans of up to 90 inches, these magnificent birds of prey can be seen making great dives into the ocean to catch fish, their primary food source.

British Columbia is one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent birds, with a population of over 90,000 of the spanning between here and Alaska.

Great Blue Heron

Nested in colonies from 5-500, you can see groups varying in sizes along the cost. These birds are the largest of all herons having extremely long, thin legs, meaning you can spot them much further out to sea than many other birds as their legs allow them to dive into waters of greater depth to catch food.

Other Marine Wildlife

Sea Lion, White Rock Sea Tours

Harbor seals are the most common marine animal in the Vancouver area, with a thriving population able to be observed almost every day of the year on our tours.

Pups are given birth to in the spring and summer seasons and can be spotted alongside their mothers for 3-4 weeks within these months before they go off on their own.

There is estimated to be over 100,000 seals off the BC coast and with few dangers to their habitat and the only prey being the occasional Orca, it is likely this population will continue to thrive in the area.

Two species of Sea Lion inhabit the waters around BC, the California Sea Lion, and the Stellar Sea Lion.

As you may have guessed from the name, California Sea Lions come up from the coast of California. During the non-breeding seasons, many males (and some females) migrate north. Stellar Sea Lions, on the other hand, come across from Japan to hunt on salmon and herring in the summer months. Both species are incredibly playful and if seen will be splashing around in groups, making their distinctive bark-like noise.

If you’ve always dreamed of seeing a great whale at its peak as it breaks through the surface of the water, or observing a bald eagle as it dives into the ocean to catch its prey, then Vancouver is the place for you. These once in a lifetime wildlife experience are one of the most exciting things to do in Vancouver and can only be experienced off the coast of our beautiful city.

Testimonials

We read about this company on trip advisor and made our reservations. The tour certainly lived up to the worthy praise that preceded it. We saw a pod of something like 30 whales!! Plus a smaller pod of 3 before that. Also porpoises, seals & eagles. It was beautiful and the guide was absolutley excellent. He was organized, informative & friendly. The boat was also great: an inflatable just like what the coast guard uses. It skips right over the water & enables you to feel far fewer rock & rolls than an ordinary boat does, which is really good for someone like me, who does get seasick! Also really appreciated that there were just 8 of us instead of a whole mob of people as we saw on other whale watch boats. This really is worth a trip no matter where you are on the island and it is suitable for children. Clarke Family, Coburg, Ontario
We would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you for the trip on the 25th August, it was just fabulous. We ploughed through all the tourist information available in Victoria BC and especially the whale trips and we did not see any advertisement for your company. You need to get your company ‘out there’, what you offer, no one else does, i.e., the small capacity and willingness to provide your customers with truly amazing memories. If any of our photos turn out any good, we will email them to you, if you like. We do not get home until late September, so it shall be a while. Thank you again so much and we wish you much success in your business and we shall be recommending your trip to anyone we encounter who may be interested in whale watching trips. Kind regards, Kris and Maree
We had such a great time on this trip. The scenery here is fantastic and our captain was very knowledgeable about local history and wildlife. It was nice to have our own set of binoculars through the boat ride. A nice touch. Julie Harris, Seattle, Washington
A whale breaching 100 yards from the boat – what more can we say? Conni and Chris Jensen, Colorado Springs, Colorado
I don’t know how to swim, so I was nervous to even go on the boat. But the friendly and professional attitude of the Captain and the comfort of the boat put me at ease. I can’t wait to go again and see even more beautiful BC coastline. Kathy Parks, Picton, Ontario
Our boating trip was well beyond what we expected – fun, educational, and exciting. We’ll definitely be back John and Catherine Sanderson, Calgary, Alberta
We just wanted to thank you again for the excellent service your outfit provided us. Your excursion was the highlight of our trip. We are already planning our next trip to see our “new friends of the sea” Keep in touch and let us know when you start offering “frequent whale watching rewards program” haha! Thanks again! Jen and Joe, Colorado
You went out of your way to make the day a real experience, and you succeeded 150%! I think Evan is trying to find a way to get ourselves and the rest of our team back to the West Coast so that we can do it again! I honestly don’t think I could think of one negative thing to say, because both Evan and I walked away almost speechless (which for the two of us, is tough!). Thank you so much for spending the day with us, and accommodating our schedules-we both appreciated how you went out of your way to make the day great. We had an amazing time, and would do it again in a heartbeat! If there is anything that we can do for you, please let us know! All the best! Valerie @ YUM Canada
This was our first trip to B.C., and we’re thrilled to have discovered this great company. We saw orca whales, humpback whales, beautiful scenery, bald eagles, and sandy beaches. This boat ride was a highlight of our trip to this beautiful island. Sam and Carrie Johnston, Ottawa, Ontario

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

5-stars

The trip lasts about 3 hrs – and it is awesome!! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and attentive. We saw orca and humpback whales – an amazing experience. This is an extremely professional organization with a group of very professional staff. Having sponsored a whale for many many years it was, for me, a dream come true – an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life – thank you Orca Spirit Adventures.

BEST EVER WHALE WATCHING TOUR!

Superlatives galore! No doubt aided by the most fabulous weather and a calm sea, today my family and I had an unforgettable day out sighting Orca, Seal, Sealion and Humpback with Greg and his crew. Beautiful scenery and the crew’s humour and local natural history knowledge really enhanced our experience.

FANTASTIC TRIP, GREAT WILDLIFE!

Fantastic trip – wasn’t just about the Orcas (although they were brilliant!), we saw humpback whale, sea otter, bald eagle, sea lions, harbour and elephant seals too. Staff onboard were really knowledgeable and the backdrop of the mountains in Washington State was just spectacular. All in all, a great trip and sensitively done.

Ocean is yours - tour overview.

Once you’ve experienced our Vancouver jetski tour, you’ll finally understand the rave reviews… Though to be honest, our backyard does most of the heavy lifting. After a quick safety briefing and tutorial by your professional guide, head out into the harbor during one of the most picture-perfect and serene times to jetski. The mornings offer smoother water, more wildlife, less boat traffic, and better light for snapping photos. But don’t let all this serenity fool you… Want to do some donuts or fly off a wave or two? Tuck into a secluded cove for a quick swim? Sneak up on a sunbathing seal to grab a quick selfie? The choice is yours. With 2.5 hours and a fun, knowledgeable guide to take you directly to the best local spots and hidden gems, you simply can’t go wrong with this best-selling Seadoo tour of Vancouver.

Exhilarating, Stable & Fun

Our quick-accelerating Seadoos are simple to drive and stable enough for beginners to learn on – but fast and agile enough for spins, deep cornering, and letting it rip on the open water.

Access a Whole New World

While the majority of visitors stay on the pavement and pathways, you’ll ride into the world’s southernmost glacial fjord and experience unforgettable landscapes only accessible by water.

Local Gems & Hidden Hangouts

Discover the best-kept secrets of local boaters. Your guide will show you where the seals are hiding, the perfect cove to jump in for a swim, and take you to the most instagrammable views.

Award-Winning Guides

Beyond the jaw-dropping scenery, your experienced and friendly Jetski guide will share stories, and local history, point out highlights, and answer any questions you have throughout the tour.

Memorable Wildlife Encounters

With a visit to our local seal colony, get up close and personal with starfish, seals, sea lions, jellyfish, bald eagles, and even occasionally spot some of our black bears and dolphins.

What Our Guests Are Saying

Wonderful Morning on the Water! … We explored Howe Sound on a beautiful morning with very few other vessels around. The Seadoos were pretty easy to get the hang of and Kevin was an awesome teacher and guide. Beautiful scenery, fast Seadoos, open water, knowledgeable and easygoing guide to lead the way, spotting wildlife and landmarks…couldn’t ask for a better experience. Highly recommended and worth every penny! Thanks Kevin!

Awesome seadoo tour! …Even though it was raining at the beginning, Brodey made our tour fabulous. Water was so calm and we could easily race up to Gambier island with the group… Their seadoos are brand new, in perfect shape and really powerful (130hp). That means 85kmh on the water in no time. Great adventure. Thanks for the tour, Brodey.

We had a blast!! We had so much fun and saw amazing places and landscapes! Sven is a truly five star guide! He walked us through all the safety rules and important stuff to know, gave us a lot of fun facts & info about Vancouver… and created a great and fun experience on the water. He adapted the pace & speed so that each member of the group felt safe, comfortable and had fun! I really recommend this experience!

I opted for a private jet ski tour this time for my partner’s birthday (as a surprise) and she was absolutely blown away and had a BLAST! It was her first time and she said it was one of the funnest things she’s ever done 🙂 Our private tour guide Justin was EXCEPTIONAL and made our day on the water one to remember

Our boat captain was delightful and informative, the area we toured was breathtaking, and the equipment felt safe and well maintained.

Frequently asked questions

Do i need a boaters license.

We issue you a one-day Boater’s License and this will allow you to drive any of our Seadoo’s for the duration of your tour or rental. You must have a valid driver’s license.

Will I be charged extra for gas?

No, a full tank of fuel is included for your tour.

What happens if I fall off the Seadoo?

If you fall off, the emergency cut off switch will be automatically triggered and stop the Seadoo.  Your life jacket will keep you afloat while you get back on from the rear of the jet ski.

I’ve never been on a Seadoo before. Can I still join the tour?

Yes! No experience is required. All you need to drive is a valid driver’s license and be 16 years or older. One of our staff will go over the controls and proper operation of the Seadoo. The first few minutes are within a no wake zone (5 mph speed limit) where you will get the feel of it before you accelerate out in the open water. Your guide will continue to give you tips throughout the tour.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You don’t need to know how to swim to ride a Seadoo. If you fall in, your lifejacket will keep you afloat while you get back on the Seadoo.

Will I get wet?

There is always a chance of getting wet out on the water. It also depends on the ocean conditions and your style of riding. We offer change rooms and complimentary wetsuits for you to wear.

Do you provide gear to keep us dry?

We have full-length wetsuits that are optional and complimentary for all our guests. We also have change rooms that you can use.

How many people can fit on a Seadoo?

One or two people can fit on our Seadoo’s, although it’s easiest to maneuver with just one person.

Do I wear shoes on the Seadoo? Do I need water shoes?

Guests often leave their shoes right on the dock where we depart from, but you are also welcome to leave them in a cubby inside the office. Water shoes are not needed but can help keep your feet warm.

Is there storage on my Seadoo?

The Deluxe models have ample storage under the hood. The Sport model has more basic storage with space for your phone, wallet, keys, a small bag but not a backpack.

Can I bring my phone or camera on the Seadoo?

It’s up to you. We offer complimentary pelican or waterproof cases that fit most phones. We also have waterproof cases you can purchase. We recommend keeping them in the storage compartment at the front of the Seadoo while you are moving.

Do I need to wear a bathing suit?

Often our guests choose to wear a bathing suit and wetsuit combination, but you are welcome to wear anything you feel comfortable in. However, please note that denim is strictly prohibited on the Seadoo’s

Where can I store my things?

We have cubbies in our office as well as small paid lockers for valuables such as wallets, passports and phones.

Do I need to wear a life jacket?

YES! We have comfortable, slim-design inflatable life jackets for all of our guests to wear.

Are bathrooms available?

There are no bathrooms on the boat! That being said, there is a bathroom available at our office you can use before and after the tour.

Are you located on the water?

The office is a 10 second walk from the dock!

What is the difference between your Seadoos?

We offer 2 models of Seadoos

  • GTI se 170 (has an additional 40hp)

What's the difference between a Seadoo and Jet Ski?

Jet Ski, Waverunner and Seadoo are brand names of personal water crafts. They are all personal water crafts.

How old do you have to be to rent a Seadoo?

For riders 16- 18 years of age, you must provide your valid driver’s license to operate our Seadoos. If you’re 19 years of age or older, a valid driver’s license or passport must be provided to operate any of our Seadoos.

What if it is raining?

We run tours rain or shine, unless the conditions are dangerous. Vancouver is known for its sunny skies from June through September, and you can grab a complimentary all-weather suit any time of year.

When do I need to arrive for my Sea Doo Tour?

Please arrive 45 minutes prior to your departure.

What is the deductible and how is it charged?

A $12 collision coverage and $1000 deposit for regular GTI and $2000 for upgrade will be “held” (similar to renting a car) on a credit card for each Sea Doo in your possession. We release the funds as soon as the equipment is returned without damage, in good working condition.

Some delays may be present depending on your bank’s policy. Please note that your Credit Card must be brought in and physically present in order to process the deductible.

I don’t have a credit card. Is there another way to hold the damage deposit?

Credit card holds are preferred. However, if you don’t have a credit card we can also do a debit withdrawal or cash hold and refund when you return without damage.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you acquired the Trip Protection for your booking during checkout, you can cancel up to 1 hour before departure time for a full refund. Otherwise, the following policy applies:

i) 100% refund for bookings cancelled more than 7 days before your departure time.

ii) 50% refund for bookings cancelled between 3 and 7 days before your departure time.

iii) No refund for bookings cancelled less than 3 days before your departure time.

Group bookings of 10 guests or more that have acquired Trip Protection may cancel up to 48 hours before departure time for a full refund. Otherwise, the following policy applies:

i) 100% refund for bookings cancelled more than 14 days before departure time.

ii) No refund for bookings cancelled less than 14 days before departure.

What if I need to cancel for a large group?

For groups larger than 6 we require 7 days notice for a full cancellation without Trip Protection

How old do I have to be to sign a waiver?

You must be 19 years of age or older to sign your waiver. Anyone under 19 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver for them.

Should I tip my tour guide?

If you feel your tour captain has provided a great experience, gratuities are encouraged— and welcomed—at the end of your tour. We believe that recognizing excellent service is a personal matter, though 15-20% of your ticket price is a good rule of thumb.

Do I have to make a reservation in advance?

Advanced reservations are required. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance.

What if I still have questions?

We’re here to help! Simply call us at (604) 736-5155 if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Day 3 Monday, July 15

ALL ABOARD Today we travel to Seward!! ALL ABOARD the Norwegian Jewel! The namesake of Norwegian’s Jewel Class has it all: some of the largest suites at sea, staterooms to accommodate all families and cruise styles, a plethora of dining options and world class entertainment. Take a culinary trip around the world with the ship’s many restaurants, featuring cuisine from Japan, Italy, Brazil and France. Norwegian Jewel offers the latest innovations in relaxation and fitness, including a spa and beauty salon to pamper guests with an exotic array of rejuvenating treatments.

Day 4 Tuesday, July 16

Cruise Hubbard Glacier: While most of the world’s glaciers are receding, North America’s largest tidewater glacier is advancing. At 76 miles long and 7 miles wide, Hubbard Glacier presents a majestic sight for passengers cruising across Yakutat Bay on the Alaskan panhandle. One of the behemoth’s most impressive stunts is the same reason ships must keep a safe distance from the spot where it occupies Disenchantment Bay: The glacier calves frequently, meaning that large chunks of ice break off from its face and plunge into the water below, creating icebergs. In addition to witnessing this spectacle of nature, keen eyes also can catch glimpses of the area’s wildlife, which includes harbor seals, orcas and humpback whales.

Day 5 Wednesday, July 17

Icy Strait Point: Icy Strait Point. The Icy Strait Point experience combines authentic regional culture with incredible natural beauty. Enjoy Tlingit dancing and art. Or get closer than you’d ever imagine to humpback whales and brown bears in the wild. Work up a wilderness hunger and satisfy it with fresh Dungeness crab. Take a cruise from Icy Strait Point and enjoy Alaska’s awe-inspiring scenery and the many excursion options that Norwegian Cruise Line has to offer.

Day 6 Thurday, July 18

Juneau: Juneau has been called “Alaska’s peak experience,” certainly due in part to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Kayak up one of the area’s many protected waterways, go flightseeing, tour historic downtown or try your hand at panning for gold. The majestic Mendenhall Glacier lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau, a trek worthwhile.

Day 7 Friday, July 19

Skagway: In a single year from 1896 to 1897, this remote town along the Inside Passage grew from a few tents to a city of 20,000 gold seekers. Today, travelers come in search of other riches – to experience yesteryear along Skagway’s charming boardwalk lined with buildings that replicate those Gold Rush days.

Day 8 Saturday, July 20

Ketchikan: Its Tlingit Indian name, Kach Khanna, means “spread wings of the eagle.” Chances are you’ll see one of these magnificent birds perched atop a Sitka tree. Thanks to its abundant rainfall, Ketchikan is surrounded by some of the world’s most lush wilderness.

Day 9 Sunday, July 21

Inside Passage: Many Alaska cruise itineraries sail the waterways of the Inside Passage, which stretches from Washington’s Puget Sound up through Southeast Alaska’s panhandle. As ships glide across the reliably smooth waters, passengers have plenty of opportunity to absorb the transforming terrain and abundant wildlife that Alaska has to offer. Scenic views comprise an ever-changing landscape of charming coastal towns, towering forest walls and imperious glaciers. Be sure to search the sky for bald eagles and watch the water for signs of sea lions, otters and whales.

Day 10 & 11 Monday, July 22 & Tuesday, July 23

Vancouver: Positioned between the snow-dusted North Shore Mountains and the rich, blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver blends big-city sophistication with small-town charm. Located on the southwestern coast of British Columbia, Vancouver is Canada’s third most populous city. The bustling metropolis is known for its cultural diversity, which is on display in areas like Chinatown, brimming with authentic eateries and apothecaries. Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood, exudes historic charm thanks to cobblestone streets and Victorian architecture harmoniously interspersed with trendy boutiques and galleries. Outdoor activities abound in the urban Stanley Park, home to gardens, beaches, trails, totem poles and the seawall amid a lush forested setting totaling about 1,000 acres. The city is a jumping-off point for whale-watching tours, which reward keen eyes with glimpses of orcas and humpback whales as well as pelicans, puffins and bald eagles. A short hop northward across the harbor into North Vancouver is Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, where seven bridges and a cliff walk delight thrill-seekers. We’ll enjoy 2 nights at our Downtown Vancouver hotel, walking distance to Canada Place and Granville Island! A guided City tour awaits as we discover the beauty of this amazing city!

DAy 12 Wednesday, July 24

Today we begin our travels home. We’ll depart Vancouver and fly home where our coach awaits to return us home!

But friends might tell you about the secret garden at St. Lukes in the Fields in New York’s West Village, a perfect spot to pitch a picnic blanket and enjoy a book. Or Le Squat du 59 Rue de Rivoli , just down from the Louvre in Paris. These are places the local chamber of commerce might not have included in their helpful sites-to-see maps.

So when your cousins come to town and want to see Stanley Park and Gastown, by all means encourage them, then let them know about some of the lesser-known things to see and do in Vancouver.

See if they will try sockeye sashimi or raw Okeover Inlet oysters — there aren’t many cities where you can get seafood so fresh. See a play at The Cultch or anything at the Rio . Check out a Sofarsounds secret concert — it’s a worldwide phenomenon, but also a great way to enjoy off-the-beaten-path Vancouver from a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop on East Hastings or a downtown rooftop for performances by local artists.

Stay on top of the latest real estate news and home design trends.

Or head to Guilt and Co. , a dark basement with a speakeasy feel under Maple Tree Square in Gastown, or Tyrant Studios atop the Penthouse Night Club downtown for great local acts, says Will Woods, a travel guide who offers alternative tours of Vancouver through his Forbidden Vancouver walking tours.

Woods takes visitors on walks called Lost Souls of Gastown, Really Gay History, Monumental Scandals, and a tour of the Penthouse itself where hidden cubbies in the furniture hid bootleg hootch during Prohibition (the club only obtained a liquor licence in 1968) and the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong pe rformed.

Woods, an alternative-Vancouver guide for 12 years, has just and conveniently published his own virtual off-the-beaten-path guidebook to Vancouver for those who have taken his tours, so he seemed a natural to turn to for hints about hidden treasures:

The virtual guidebook is strong on local, independent and BIPOC-owned sites, and forgive Woods if No. 1 on his list is one of his walking tours.

“Otherwise, I think that the Marine Building is well worth a visit if anybody’s got any interest at all in architecture, or even isn’t interested in architecture because it’s a very cool historic space,” he said.

“It’s well worth a visit on a weekday. Get inside and look at the lobby, go to the mezzanine and look around. That would be one of my recommendations.”

You’ve probably heard it at some point, that big boom resonating over Burrard Inlet at 9 p.m. every night. But you really need to be close enough to see the Nine O’Clock Gun firing, Woods said.

“It really goes off, it’s incredible,” he said. “I think what it must have been like to have like 40 of those cannons going off at the same time, it would have just blown your ears apart.

“It’s really a pretty cool thing to do. But don’t get too close, it’s loud!”

Good tidings

You need to get to Spanish Banks early, Woods said, to enjoy low tide to its fullest, and it’s one of his favourite places to bring friends who are in town.

“I really like doing this with everyone who visits. I go to Spanish Banks at low tide and walk right out as far as we can. It must be at least a mile out at low tide.

“My recommendation is not to get there at low tide but 90 minutes before because it takes such a long time to walk out.”

Paging bibliophiles

Massy Books is an Indigenous-owned and -operated store on East Georgia between Main and Gore streets, specializing in rare, offbeat and out-of-print books to today’s bestsellers.

“It’s got an incredible variety of writing, Canadian and from elsewhere,” Woods said. “It’s got a really big queer section, and it’s got a children’s section hidden behind a secret door, which is really cool.”

Rite of passage

Woods’ favourite Vancouver museum is in Kitsilano’s Vanier Park.

“The Maritime Museum is my favourite, I think it really fits with the history of B.C. and the province, and us being right on the water,” he said.

“And the St. Roch , to think it went through the Northwest Passage,” the schooner’s thick Douglas fir and hard Australian eucalyptus becoming the first hull to plow the Arctic route from west to east, while also becoming the first ship to circumnavigate North America.

Guerrilla in the midst

There’s one place Woods’s Stanley Park tour doesn’t get to because it’s on the far side of the park, but Woods can’t recommend enough a short hike to see a piece of guerrilla artwork known as Two Spirits .

Its creator remains a mystery to the public and the artwork is not sanctioned by the Vancouver Park Board: Two silhouetted faces carved into a huge stump. Come spring and summer, vegetation growing on the top gives it a nice coif, like if Carrot Top’s hair was green.

You reach Two Spirits from the park’s English Bay side, the trailhead is near Second Beach. Indigenous beliefs about two spirits (masculine and feminine sides) meld seamlessly with the West End’s queer history, Woods said, as well as commemorating the history of the land Stanley Park is on, home to Indigenous settlements for thousands of years until they were forcibly removed during colonization.

“I’m passionate about this piece, two spirits carved into a tree trunk and hidden in Stanley Park,” Woods said. “It’s really something when you’re on the trail and you’re sort of looking for it and you go to this little unofficial side trail and it sort of appears in front of you.

“That’s a really impressive piece of artwork.”

Government of Canada announces new measures and funding to protect Southern Resident killer whales

From: Transport Canada

News release

Southern Resident killer whales are icons of Canada’s Pacific coast, and culturally significant to Indigenous Peoples and coastal communities in British Columbia. For the sixth consecutive year, the Government of Canada is implementing measures to protect these whales and restore their population.

June 3, 2024                    Vancouver, British Columbia

Today, the Minister of Natural Resources Canada, Jonathan Wilkinson, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier, and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, Steven Guilbeault, announced a series of measures, which came into effect as of June 1, as well as an investment of $3.5 million to protect Southern Resident killer whales, and the renewal of a five-year Conservation Agreement that was signed between the Government of Canada and the marine transportation industry.

The 2024 and 2025 measures include:

  • Two mandatory speed-restricted zones near Swiftsure Bank, effective June 1 to November 30, 2024.
  • Two interim sanctuary zones off Pender and Saturna Islands, effective June 1 to November 30, 2024.
  • A voluntary speed reduction zone in Tumbo Channel, off the North side of Saturna Island.
  • The continued requirement for vessels to stay at least 400 metres away from all killer whales, and a prohibition from impeding the path of all killer whales in Southern British Columbia coastal waters between Campbell River and Ucluelet, including Barkley and Howe Sound. This is now in effect until May 31, 2025.
  • An agreement with local whale watching and ecotourism industry partners to abstain from offering or promoting tours viewing Southern Resident killer whales.
  • Fishery closures for commercial and recreational salmon fisheries in key Southern Resident killer whale foraging areas in 2024 and 2025.
  • Additional actions to reduce contaminants in the environment affecting whales and their prey.

In addition, Transport Canada will provide $3.2 million over two years to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to continue the Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) Program. This program conducts ground-breaking research and coordinates voluntary threat reduction initiatives encouraging ship operators to slow down or stay distanced while travelling through key areas of Southern Resident killer whale habitat in Haro Strait, Boundary Pass, Swiftsure Bank, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Transport Canada will also provide $300,000 to Ocean Wise to support their Whale Report Alert System, which notifies large commercial vessels when they may be near whales via an online app. This enables vessels to take appropriate actions, including monitoring for whale presence and/or slowing the vessel down to reduce disturbance.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is conducting further analysis on long-term protections for killer whales in British Columbia by considering amendments to Pacific killer whale approach distances in the Marine Mammal Regulations of the Fisheries Act . DFO has launched an online national public survey open until September 3, 2024, to consult Canadians on potential amendments to the Marine Mammal Regulations . Any potential changes to the Marine Mammal Regulations will be informed by First Nations, stakeholders, and public feedback, as part of the consultation process, as well as the best available scientific advice and information.

The effective protection and recovery of the Southern Resident killer whale requires long-term, collective commitment from the Government of Canada and other partners. The federal government will continue to work with First Nations, partners, stakeholders, and marine and tourism industry to further our efforts and help their population recover.

“Southern Resident killer whales need our help. That’s why for the sixth straight year we’re taking concrete action with our partners to create a quieter, safer environment for this iconic, vulnerable species.” The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez Minister of Transport
“Our government is committed to protecting Southern Resident killer whales, and moving towards a safer, quieter ocean environment where they can thrive. The measures announced today are a reflection of the great work we are investing in to understand Southern Resident killer whales and what they need to recover.” The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard
“Southern Resident killer whales are a key species at risk, emblematic of the health of the oceans and marine ecosystem. Our recent actions have improved our ability to find and evaluate sources of contaminants in the environment affecting whales directly or through their prey, which is helping us identify and design additional measures to help this iconic marine mammal survive and thrive.” The Honourable Steven Guilbeault Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada
“The renewal of the conservation agreement to protect endangered southern resident killer whales reaffirms our commitment to work together to reduce threats to whales from commercial shipping. We look forward to building on the strides we've taken through the ECHO Program towards creating quieter and safer waters for the at-risk whales in our region, and we thank the Government of Canada for continuing to fund this important work.” Peter Xotta President and Chief Executive Officer, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority
“The Southern Resident Killer Whale is a vital component of the local marine ecosystem and has cultural significance for Indigenous peoples and coastal communities in British Columbia. As these creatures face threats to their survival and recovery, we are taking immediate and continuous action to protect them. These measures and investments will help better protect, preserve and restore our marine ecosystems for years to come.” The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson Minister of Energy and Natural Resources

Quick facts

Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan , Whales Initiative , and an additional federal investment of $61.5 million are supporting the survival and recovery of Southern Resident killer whales, North Atlantic right whales, and St. Lawrence Estuary belugas by implementing protection measures, increasing research, and monitoring activities and taking action to address key threats.

In May 2024, the Government of Canada renewed A Species at Risk Act Section 11 Conservation Agreement to Support the Recovery of the Southern Resident Killer Whale with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and industry partners for five years. This formalizes the role of the ECHO Program and partners in developing and implementing voluntary threat reduction measures to support the endangered Southern Resident killer whales.

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood rejects calls to cancel tour with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa

vancouver ocean tours

The musician Jonny Greenwood is pushing back on critics who say he should abandon a plan to tour with an Israeli collaborator because of the Israel-Hamas war.

Greenwood and Dudu Tassa, an Israeli rock star from a prominent Mizrahi musical family, are scheduled to perform together on the European festival circuit this summer, a year after they released a joint record that featured singers from across the Middle East . Some of the dates were rescheduled after the pair canceled shows in the immediate wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

The performances are drawing criticism amid widespread anti-Israel sentiment in the arts and in Europe, and Greenwood has faced calls to cancel.

In a statement posted to social media on Tuesday , he said he would do no such thing — and said that calls to silence Israeli artists are counterproductive.

“Others choose to believe this kind of project is unjustifiable and are urging the silence of this — or any — artistic effort made by Israeli Jews,” Greenwood wrote. “But I can’t join that call: The silencing of Israeli film makers/musicians/dancers when their work tours abroad — especially when it’s at the urging of their fellow western filmmakers/musicians/artists — feels unprogressive to me, not least because it’s these people that are invariably the most progressive members of any society.”

Greenwood’s relationship to Israel is long. He is married to Israeli visual artist Sharona Katan, who has said the family identifies as Jewish , and recorded guitar on albums by Tassa and fellow Israeli Shye Ben Tzur before making the album with Tassa. Both artists opened for Radiohead on some tour dates in 2017.

Tassa is the grandson of Daoud Al-Kuwaity, one of the most famous Iraqi composers of the 20th century , who emigrated to Israel in 1951. In his statement, Greenwood notes that the songs of Al-Kuwaity and his brother Saleh “are still staples of Arab-wide radio stations — though sadly their heritage as Jews is never mentioned any longer.”

Radiohead, which has won several Grammy Awards and sold millions of records since the 1990s, have been the targets of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, especially in the lead-up to their 2017 concert in Tel Aviv. In response, lead singer Thom Yorke called BDS protesters “offensive” and “patronizing,” adding, “The person who knows most about these things is Jonny.”

In an Instagram post this week , Tassa called Greenwood “an amazing person who is always willing to take risks for peace and justice,” and a dear friend.

“Our desire and choice as musicians from different backgrounds (he is an English rocker and I am a Jewish-Israeli who absorbed roots of Arab culture) have always been and will continue to be, to strive to understand the ‘other,’ to get to know him and to introduce him to us through the language of music — completely the opposite of fostering a one-sided discourse of boycotts and threats,” Tassa wrote.

“The truth is that the boycotters and condemners do not promote anything — just more hatred,” he added. “I hope and wish that together our performance will unite and connect people from different backgrounds and be part of a small step towards a better future.”

Greenwood did not explicitly mention the war, the Palestinians or Gaza in his statement, angering some of his critics. But he acknowledged that his planned performances with Tassa come at a difficult time.

“No art is as ‘important’ as stopping all the death and suffering around us. How can it be? But doing nothing seems a worse option,” he wrote. “And silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict.”
