Tour de Luxembourg

  • Dates 20 Sept - 24 Sept
  • Race Length 709 kms
  • Race Category Elite Men

The Skoda Tour de Luxembourg is a five-day stage race that used to take place just a couple of weeks before the Tour de France , as a warm-up test before the main event, so to speak. Nowadays, the race has moved to a mid-September slot following the Vuelta a España , and has joined the UCI ProSeries calendar. In turn, it now serves as a last-ditch opportunity for many riders to secure a contract for the following season.

First raced all the way back in 1935, the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg has a long and illustrious history, and regularly attracts some of the world’s best riders. This year’s edition is no different, with 12 WorldTour teams, six ProTeams and two Continental outfits taking to the start line in Abbaye de Neumünster on Wednesday. Lidl-Trek will be back looking to retain their title with Mattias Skjelmose , but the Dane will of course face heavy competition from the likes of AG2R Citroën , Groupama-FDJ and UAE Team Emirates .

The race may take place in one of Europe’s smallest nations, but that doesn’t stop it from seeking out enough unique terrain for five action-packed stages. A lot of these stages crosscut each other, creating a route map that looks remarkably similar to a spider’s web.

The five-day event offers opportunities for just about every type of rider with a hilly day to kick off proceedings before a flatter Classics-style stage follows. A mountainous stage 3 is then followed by an individual time trial before stage 5 concludes in Luxembourg City.

With bonus seconds routinely deciding the outcome of the race it pays to be up there at the pointy end during each and every stage finish. Mattias Skjelmose, João Almeida, Diego Ulissi, Jesús Herrada and Andrea Pasqualon have won the last five editions of this race by doing exactly that; in fact, each one of these riders won at least one stage of this five-day race before going on to claim their overall titles.

Date: September 20-24, 2023

Country: Luxembourg

Category: 2.Pro

Editions: 82 (as of 2022)

First winner: Mathias Clemens

Most recent winner: Mattias Skjelmose

Stage 1: Abbaye de Neumünster → Kirchberg (156.1km)

Stage 2: Mondorf-les-Bains → Mamer (183.1km)

Stage 3: Mertert → Vianden (169km)

Stage 4: Pétange → Pétange (ITT) (23.9km)

Stage 5: Mersch → Limpertsberg (176.2km)

Leading the list of contenders will be Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek, given his status as the defending champion following last year’s victory over Kévin Vauquelin and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), the latter of whom will also be on the start line again this year.

Both Skjelmose and Madouas are riders perfectly suited to the punchy hills of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, with neither being an out-and-out mountain goat over Europe’s longest mountains, but both being more than handy over the shorter, more explosive efforts. With this in mind, we can expect both to be in contention to repeat their podium finishes from last season.

Skjelmose may have the edge in the stage 4 time trial, having finished inside the top 10 of every ITT he has raced so far in 2023.

The Dane has taken another step forward so far this season, enjoying a fine spring Classics campaign both winning the Tour de Suisse and the Danish National Championship Road Race. His form has continued recently, finishing second at the Tour of Denmark and winning the Maryland Cycling Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare, before taking top 10 finishes in both of the Canadian Classics.

  • Maryland Cycling Classic: Mattias Skjelmose wins America's only pro road race
  • Bretagne Classic: An emotional Valentin Madouas wins in a three-up sprint

As for Madouas, the French national champion won the Bretagne Classic in fantastic fashion at the start of the month and will have the benefit of multiple leaders within the Groupama-FDJ team. Alongside Madouas, the French squad can also count on the attacking prowess of David Gaudu and Thibaut Pinot - notably, this is Pinot’s final stage race as a professional before the curtain falls down on his career at Il Lombardia.

UAE Team Emirates and AG2R Citroën will both look to take the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg on the front foot, as well, with an array of attacking talent at their disposal.

The former have the in-form Marc Hirschi , fresh from his win at the Coppa Sabatini, America’s Brandon McNulty , and their 19-year-old talent, Jan Christen , who is looking for his first breakthrough performance in UAE Team Emirates colours. As for AG2R Citroën, their hopes will lie in Aurélien Paret-Peintre , Ben O’Connor and one of the sensations of 2023, Tour de France stage winner Felix Gall .

Elsewhere, Israel-Premier Tech are bringing the strongest ProTeam squad with Mike Woods , Dylan Teuns and Jakob Fuglsang , Soudal Quick-Step will be led by Julian Alaphilippe , Jumbo-Visma by Tiesj Benoot , Movistar by Alex Aranburu and Matteo Jorgenson , and EF Education-EasyPost are slated to be bringing Giro della Toscana runner-up, Richard Carapaz .

For the home nation, Bob Jungels (Bora-Hansgrohe) will carry the majority of the expectations, but an eye should also be kept on Tudor Pro Cycling’s Arthur Kluckers , who performed well in the National Championships in June.

Race history

Despite having a population of just 600,000 people, Luxembourg has produced 25 overall winners, the most of any nation across the 88-year history of this race. Some of their most accomplished riders have taken a win here too, including Fränk Schleck, Charly Gaul and Mathias Clemens. The latter heads the winners list in this race with five overall victories, taken during the 30s and 40s.

It has been 14 years since Luxembourg’s last win in this race, with Fränk Schleck back in 2009. Could 2023 be the year we see one of their top talents like Bob Jungels or Kevin Geniets end the drought and take home a big win?

Škoda Tour de Conamara 2024

Škoda ring of clare 2024, the škoda tour de conamara: a complete guide.

The Škoda Tour de Conamara: A Complete Guide

The Škoda Tour de Conamara is a yearly highlight for cycling enthusiasts! This annual event, set against the picturesque backdrop of Conamara, attracts participants with its stunning route along Ireland’s rugged Wild Atlantic Way and through its serene valleys and mountains.

As we look back on the recent 2024 edition of the sportive, we spotlight the Tour in more detail, explore some of the brilliant things to do and see locally, and chat to veteran Škoda Celtic Series cyclist Seán Burchill about his experience taking part to date!

Overview and 2024 Routes

The Škoda Tour de Conamara offers two main routes, each carefully designed to showcase Conamara’s natural beauty whilst bringing the Škoda experience the Tour is known for! Here’s a closer look at what participants can expect in future editions:

140km Route

This longer route is designed for the more seasoned cyclists, offering a rewarding experience against a sociable event scene. The route begins in Clifden and heads towards the scenic Sky Road, known for its panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Riders will then cycle north along the coast, experiencing rugged landscapes and the wild, untamed beauty of the western seaboard.

skoda tour start list

The route continues through the heart of Conamara, passing by several notable landmarks and natural features:

  • Twelve Bens Mountains: Known for their dramatic peaks, the Twelve Bens provide a stunning backdrop as cyclists push through some of the more challenging sections of the route.
  • Killary Harbour: Ireland’s only fjord offers spectacular views and a sense of tranquility amidst the race.
  • Inagh Valley: A serene stretch that is often considered one of the highlights, with lush greenery and majestic mountains on either side.

The return leg to Clifden showcases more of the coastal scenery, ensuring that the finish is as memorable as the start!

The shorter route is by no means less scenic, tailored for those who prefer a less strenuous ride while still soaking in the natural beauty. Starting from Clifden, this route initially follows the same path as the 140km course but soon diverges to include some unique elements:

  • Ballyconneely and Roundstone: The route meanders through these charming villages, allowing riders to enjoy a more cultural experience amidst the natural vistas.
  • Bog Road: Cyclists will traverse this famous stretch, characterised by vast peatlands and unique flora, which is particularly picturesque during the spring and summer months.

Both routes finish back in Clifden, where participants can celebrate their accomplishments with some well-earned local hospitality!

Participants can also look forward to well-organised support, including free parking, showers and food and drink pit stops.

Seán Burchill’s Experience of the Škoda Tour de Conamara

To gain a fresh perspective of the Tour de Conamara, we caught up with Škoda Celtic Series participant, Seán Burchill. A Limerick native, Seán has taken part in the sportive for many years, embodying the spirit and passion that makes this event a must for cycling fans!

skoda tour start list

Seán, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got involved with the Škoda Tour de Conamara?

I started cycling in 2010 after I retired. We had formed a new cycling club the same year called Southside Wheely Wheelers and then we first started doing cycles around the Ring of Kerry. At the time, An Post hosted a series of cycles, and we went to places up and down Ireland such as Cork and Sligo which got us going. Soon after, the Škoda Celtic Series became a thing and I have been participating in the Tour de Conamara and Ring of Clare cycles ever since!

I have been doing the Škoda Tour de Conamara for over 10 years. We love doing this Tour – a lot of our club members come up from Limerick and it’s a real social event which is what I love.

The Tour de Conamara offers stunning routes through this beautiful area of Ireland. Which part of the route is your favourite and what do you love the most about it?

I particularly love coming down the coast towards Kylemore. When you can see the sea on one side and the mountains on the other, it’s just something else. Conamara is such a fabulous place.

I just love the overall atmosphere of the Tour de Conamara too. It’s great when we’re starting off in Clifden, everyone is relaxing and having a bite to eat. Then, at the end of the cycle you can enjoy the band and music with your friends and people you’ve met along the way, it’s just a really sociable event.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering participating in the Škoda Tour de Conamara for the first time?

Start off easy and gradually build up. There’s no need to make it a race in my view, just enjoy the cycle. The social side is the best part, because you’ll meet people on the bike and you’ll start chatting away. Last year I met up with a crowd from England and it was their first time doing it, so it’s never too late to get going and enjoy it!

Another popular destination is Kylemore Abbey , a beautiful neo-Gothic castle set amidst historic woodland and a Victorian Walled Garden. The Estate also hosts a jam-packed schedule of walks, talks and events if you fancy something a little different.

The 109 th run of the classic cycling classic starts on 1 July with the Grand Départ in Copenhagen, Denmark, the northernmost starting point in the history of the race. The 21 stages, including six mountain stretches, will take the peloton through four countries over a distance of 3,300 kilometres. On 24 July, the riders will reach their destination on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.

ŠKODA AUTO is supporting the world’s largest cycling event for the 19 th time. As the official main and vehicle partner, it is also providing 250 vehicles to the organisers and race management, as well as service and support vehicles. Alongside the ENYAQ iV, the fleet includes OCTAVIAs and the ŠKODA SUPERB iV with plug-in hybrid drive.

Ahead of the field, Tour Director Christian Prudhomme will be travelling in an all-electric ŠKODA ENYAQ iV. He will be waving the yellow flag through the sliding roof of the ‘Red Car’ at the start of each stage. This is the third time the SUV has served as Prudhomme’s mobile command centre. On some stages, the ŠKODA SUPERB iV with plug-in hybrid drivetrain will be taking to the course as the command vehicle.

Now for the 12 th time, the Czech car manufacturer has designed the crystal trophy for the winner of the world’s largest cycling race. ŠKODA AUTO has also been sponsoring the green jersey for the leader of the points standings since 2015.

Furthermore, ŠKODA AUTO is a partner of the Tour de France Femmes, which starts on 24 July. The participants will cover eight stages over a distance of 1,029 kilometres from Paris to La Planche des Belles Filles.

ŠKODA campaign ‘You have to love it. We do.’ To mark the Tour de France, ŠKODA is launching the campaign ‘You have to love it. We do.’ and is promoting it in TV commercials, on its social media channels and on the company’s website www.welovecycling.com where cycling fans will find exciting stories and information about the Tour de France as well as a competition. Prizes include tickets to the Tour de France, a signed green jersey, bicycles, cycling equipment and subscriptions to the fitness app Strava. App users can also take part in a cycling challenge and the winner will receive their own green jersey.

Extensive involvement in cycling sponsorship As the ‘engine of cycling’, ŠKODA AUTO supports the Tour de France as well as numerous national and international cycling races and popular sports events. In addition to the Spanish tour ‘Vuelta’, this includes the amateur race L’Etape. Under the umbrella of the Tour de France, the worldwide racing series enables ambitious amateur cyclists to follow a race stage.

Committed to sustainability In collaboration with its partners, ŠKODA AUTO is consistently working on innovative sustainability concepts. At the Tour de France, for example, the car manufacturer will be using tyres from its partner Continental for the ENYAQ iV fleet, which contain additives made from recycled materials. The carcass material consists entirely of recycled PET bottles. In addition to safety, this innovation also ensures exceptional handling characteristics with minimal environmental impact. The tyres for ŠKODA models are custom developed. Working closely with partners, the car manufacturer aims to use tyres produced from sustainable materials in series production in the future.

For The Win

Taylor Swift's surprise songs from Night 2 of her Lyon Eras Tour show, including a TTPD favorite

T aylor Swift's Eras Tour continued its international journey on Monday night in France (afternoon in the United States) with the second of two shows in Lyon. The now 14-time Grammy winner will be touring almost non-stop for the entire year, and at each show she adds two "surprise songs" to her 44-song, three hour plus set list.

MORE:  The Chiefs’ game at the Bills perfectly aligns with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Toronto. Coincidence or conspiracy?

For the second night in Lyon, Swift chose a mashup of "Glitch" from Midnights and "Everything Has Changed" from Red on the guitar. On piano, she broke out "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus," one of the fan favorites from her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Next up, Swift takes off for Edinburgh, Scotland for three shows that start Friday.

Tour de France 2024 Rider Power Rankings

Less than a month out from the start of the men’s Tour de France, we ranked the top yellow jersey threats in the peloton.

cycling fra tdf2023 stage15

This is the latest edition of Bicycling’ s Power Rankings for the 2024 Men’s Tour de France, where we rank the top contenders leading up to July’s race. This continuously updated list will give you an in-depth look at the riders that have the best shot to stand atop the podium at the end of the Tour—and how they’re performing in the races leading up to July.

These rankings will be constantly refreshed, so you can see who’s up and who’s down on the road to the 2024 Tour de France.

The 2024 Tour de France was expected to bring together the sport’s four best grand tour riders: Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), winner of the last two Tours de France; Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), winner of the 2020 and 2021 Tours de France and the recent Giro d’Italia; Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), winner of the 2022 Vuelta a España; and Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe), a 3-time winner of the Vuelta and the champion at last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Each rider was taking a different route to the Tour de France, with each choosing to mix race days with extended periods of time spent at training camps. And while some of their paths crossed at select races throughout the first few months of the season, they weren’t expected to all race together until the Tour. For fans, it was a dream scenario.

But the dream became a nightmare in early-April after a scary, high-speed crash during Stage 4 of Spain’s Tour of the Basque Country took down several riders, including Vingegaard, Roglič, and Evenepoel. Two of them–Vingegaard and Evenepoel–suffered serious injuries, and all of them had their Tour preparations interrupted.

That was almost eight weeks ago, and they’re all back on their bikes and training again. But with the Tour de France beginning in Florence, Italy just four weeks from Saturday, one big question still remains: Will Vingegaard–who suffered the worst injuries of the three–be on the starting line, and if he is will he have the form he needs to defend his title? This storyline is the one we’ll be watching the most in the month leading up to the start of the Tour, but it’s not the only one.

We’re also excited to see if Pogačar can become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the same season (spoiler alert: we think he can). And last but definitely not least, we’re eager to learn which other contenders–if any–will be ready to challenge him.

So with four weeks left before the Tour’s “Grand Depart,” here’s our latest–and perhaps most optimistic–Tour de France contender Power Ranking.

Next Race: Tour de France, June 29-July 21

With about four weeks until the start of the Tour de France, there are still no questions about who the Tour’s top contender is. Pogačar just wrapped-up a three-week training camp in Italy. You may have heard it–it’s called the Giro d’Italia.

We’re kidding, right? Well, not really. Pog absolutely dominated the Italian grand tour, winning the maglia rosa by almost ten minutes over the next-closest rider on the Giro’s General Classification. Along the way he won six stages–finished second or third on three more–and won the Giro’s King of the Mountains prize. But more importantly, he finished the race healthy and reasonably fresh for a rider who just won a three-week grand tour.

He only crashed once–near the end of Stage 2 when he flatted and his front wheel slipped out from him. It was a minor fall, and Pogačar quickly quickly got back on his bike and promptly won the stage. Otherwise, he escaped the race injury-free.

He also stayed healthy, which–considering the terrible weather that the race encountered at the beginning of the third week–was another blessing for the Slovenian. Staying safe and healthy during a three-week is often a greater challenge than overcoming the competition, and Pog came through that battle unscathed.

And speaking of the competition, between a relatively gentle course and a rather weak (sorry, guys) start list, Pogačar was never really pushed to defend his lead. With the exception of the Giro’s two individual time trials, he basically won the race with a series of quick, uphill accelerations that no one else could follow. Then he simply rode a steady tempo to the finish line, extending his advantage as he pedaled.

Pogačar’s near-perfect Giro–plus the fact that he raced minimally in the months before it–means that he probably ended the Giro stronger than he was when he started it. That’s bad news for the men he’ll be racing against at the Tour de France.

With the Giro behind him, Pogačar will rest for a week and then head to a ski station in the French Alps for nineteen days of altitude training. He won’t race before the Tour de France, but with a grand tour in his legs, he doesn’t need to.

At this rate, we’ll be eating some humble pie in late-July. At the beginning of the season, we didn’t have much faith in his chances of winning the Giro and the Tour in the same season. But given the way things are shaping up, now we’ll be more surprised if he doesn’t.

Next Race : Critérium du Dauphiné, June 2-10

Roglič also went down in the crash that took out Vingegaard and Evenepoel, and like the other two, he abandoned the race immediately. But after a series of medical examinations, BORA-hansgrohe reported that the 34-year-old suffered no major injuries. Compared to the others, the Slovenian dodged bullet.

He was initially expected to take part in Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège last week, but the team changed plans to give him extra time to heal. That was a good call, as the weather in the Belgian Ardennes was atrocious that week, and the risk of getting sick or worse–another crash–just wasn’t worth it. In fact, he probably made more gains by training than he would have by racing.

The Slovenian spent the past five weeks training–which was always the plan–and now he’s heading to the Critérium du Dauphiné–which starts this Sunday–for his last big test before the Tour de France.

The Dauphiné is essentially an 8-day mini-Tour de France with several stages that mimic key stages from the upcoming Tour. It’s also early enough in the month that riders have time for one more small block of training before the start of the Tour. That makes it a popular dress rehearsal for Tour contenders, and Roglič will be going head-to-head with several of his rivals. And it’s a race he knows well: he won it in 2022.

That’s why anything worse than a top-5 finish would be bad news for the Slovenian. He doesn’t need to win it; after all, the Dauphiné ends four weeks before the start of the Tour, and he needs to be at his best in July not June.

But a poor performance against many of the men he’ll be racing against at the Tour will raise some eyebrows, putting even more pressure on a 34-year-old rider who might be staring down his last reasonable chance to win the Tour de France.

rider headshot

Remco Evenepoel

Previous Ranking : 3

Race Days : 17

Race Wins : 4

Best Result : 2nd place, General Classification - Paris-Nice

Another victim of the crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, Evenepoel broke his right clavicle and scapula in Spain and had surgery a few days later in Belgium to address the broken collarbone. The injury meant the Belgian missed a chance to become only the fourth rider to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège three years in a row.

But his injuries have healed and he’s been on his bike for several weeks. He even attended a recent training camp with his team in Sierra Nevada. So he’s back on schedule in terms of his training for this summer’s Tour de France.

This sets Evenepoel up for an important showdown with Roglič–and others–at the Critérium du Dauphiné–the Belgian’s last race before the Tour de France–and the pressure he’ll face there will be intense.

The winner of the 2022 Vuelta a España, Evenepoel is Belgium’s best chance to win a Tour in several decades (a Belgian hasn’t won the Tour since 1976), so he already carries the weight of a nation of passionate cycling fans on his shoulders.

So there’s really no way for the 24-year-old to come out of the Dauphiné without facing even more pressure: if races well–let’s say, finishes on the podium–everyone will start talking about him as if he’s bound to win the Tour. But a bad Dauphiné will fire up the naysayers, putting the wrong kind of pressure on a rider who sometimes struggles to handle adversity. It’s an unenviable position, but that’s life as when you’re Belgium’s first grand tour winner since 1978.

Egan Bernal and Carlos Rodriguez

Previous Rankings : 4 (Bernal) and 5 (Rodríguez)

Race Days : 28 (Bernal) and 24 (Rodríguez)

Race Wins : 0 (Bernal) and 2 (Rodríguez)

Best Result : 3rd place, General Classficiation - Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (Bernal) and 1st-place, General Classification - Tour de Romandie (Rodríguez)

Next Race : Tour de France, June 29-July 21 (Bernal) and Critérium du Dauphiné, June 2-10 (Rodríguez)

We’re hedging our bets with this one because–at the moment–we can’t find a reason to put one ahead of the other. But that could change after the Critérium du Dauphiné, which Rodríguez will be starting this weekend.

The Spaniard flew a bit under the radar at last year’s Dauphiné, but in hindsight he shouldn’t have: he finished ninth overall against some tough competition and won the white jersey as the race’s Best Young Rider. The then-22-year-old went on to finish fifth overall and win a stage at the Tour de France. Perhaps we should have seen it coming.

But Rodríguez won’t sneak up on anyone this year, and his performance will indicate if he’s ready to become a true Tour de France podium contender. If he is, he’ll likely bump Bernal–who last raced in late-April and is currently training in Colombia–down a notch in the team’s leadership hierarchy. And that might not be a bad thing: we like the chances of “Bernal the Dark Horse” better than those of “Bernal the Pre-Tour Podium Contender.”

jonas vingegaard, 6

Jonas Vingegaard

Previous Ranking : Under Consideration

Race Days : 14

Race Wins : 7

Best Result : 1st-place, General Classification - Tirreno-Adriatico

Next Race : TBD

Given some recent news, we’re optimistically moving the Tour’s two-time defending champion back into our top-5—well, 6 if you consider the INEOS tandem above.

One of the worst victims of the crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, Vingegaard lay motionless along the side of the road for a few minutes before finally being placed in an ambulance and taken to a local hospital, where tests revealed a broken collarbone and a few cracked ribs. Later the team shared that Vingegaard also suffered a pulmonary contusion and a collapsed lung. He stayed in the hospital for 12 days.

At first, Visma-Lease a Bike wouldn’t discuss the Dane’s chances of racing the Tour de France. But now they are–albeit in uncertain terms–because Vingegaard is back on his bike and training. He was first spotted on a bike path in Denmark, and this week, he arrived in Tignes, France for altitude training camp.

At the Giro d’Italia last week, his team manager Richard Plugge confirmed that Vingegaard has indeed resumed training but would only head to the Tour if he is 100 percent ready to defend his title. And he didn’t sound as if the possibility of the Dane being ready in time was as far-fetched as it seemed a month ago.

He won’t ride the Dauphiné, but his teammates racing it will meet him in Tignes afterwards. Things are clearly going better than they were in April for Vingegaard, and we think there’s about a 50% chance that he starts the Tour de France.

Vingegaard started the season in dominating fashion. In fact, he was so strong that some wondered how he could possibly maintain such a high level of fitness all the way through the Tour. Assuming he’s able to get anywhere close to the form he had before the crash–and he starts the Tour–he’s good enough to break back into our Power Ranking. It’s an optimistic take, but we’re going with it–for now.

Under Consideration

If Vingegaard is ultimately unable to start the Tour de France, American Sepp Kuss (Visma Lease a Bike) –the winner of last year’s Vuelta a España–will likely lead the team instead. Kuss hasn’t raced since the Tour of the Basque Country, but he’s starting the Critérium du Dauphiné this Sunday. With three summit finishes to close out the race, it’s the perfect chance for Kuss to assert himself as a Tour de France contender.

103rd volta ciclista a catalunya 2024 stage 3

Spain’s Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) is also riding the Dauphiné and likely racing to win it. The 21-year-old finished third at the 2022 Vuelta a España and is set to start his first Tour de France this summer. He’ll be riding in support of Pogačar, but the Spaniard could be a contender himself–both as a domestique (UAE put two riders on the podium last year) and as a back-up plan (should something happen to Pog).

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) has been training since his last race, April’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The 31-year-old is racing the Tour de Suisse–which takes place one week after the Dauphiné–as his final race before the Tour. And he’ll be racing with a chip on his shoulder: the reigning Olympic champion was not selected to represent his country at the games this summer. Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers)–who won Stage 1 at the Giro d’Italia–was chosen instead.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

OFFICIAL presentation of THE skoda tour luxembourg route 2022

A highly promising route

From September 13th to 17th of 2022, Luxembourg will catch the cycling fever once again for the 82nd edition of the  Š koda Tour LuXembourg , the Grand Duchy’s biggest cycling race. The race will cross the hills of the luxembourgish Ardennes in the north, the fabulous vineyards of the Moselle river and the historical industrial sites of southern Luxembourg.

However, the cyclists will not be able to do any sightseeing. They will be fighting for the succession of Joao Almeida, who won the Škoda Tour LuXembourg in 2021. In order to win this year, they need to resist to a multitude of different terrains. From day one, the contenders for the final victory will have to be on their toes.

The first stage will start on  Tuesday, September 13th  near the Stade de Luxembourg, which was inaugurated a year ago, and will cover 163,8 km with four climbs. In the north of the country, the ascents of Niklosbierg (cat.1/4,4 km at 6,1%), Bourscheid (HC/3,4 km at 7,6%) and Eschdorf (cat.1/2,8 km at 8,4%) will be tackled. The Côte de Stafelter (cat.1/2,6 km at 5%) with 9 km to go could already reveal who will be among the best riders in the final classification. Before crossing the finish line near the European school in Luxemburg-Kirchberg, the competitors will have to climb slightly for 3 km. In the previous edition of the Škoda Tour LuXembourg, Joao Almeida laid the foundations for his final victory by winning the first stage which was identical to this year’s finish.

The famous Col de l’Europe

The sprinters will mark  Wednesday, September 14th  on their calendars. However, a bunch sprint is not guaranteed at all: the famous Col de l’Europe (HC/1.5 km at 7.9%) must be tackled with 49 km to go. It would be an ideal opportunity for riders who want to seriously complicate the race. This second stage of 163,4 km will start in Junglinster and will first discover the Mullerthal region, known as the little Switzerland of Luxembourg, before crossing the west of the country to arrive near the town hall in Schifflange. A tribute will be paid to Nicolas Frantz, back-to-back winner of the Tour de France (1927 and 1928), with an intermediate sprint in front of his house in Mamer.

With a distance of 188,4 km, the third stage on  Thursday, September 15th  will be the longest of this 82nd edition of the Škoda Tour LuXembourg and will lead from Rosport to Diekirch, where the finish line is situated near the football stadium. Three climbs will be decisive: Um Knupp (HC/800 m at 9,8%) is located 60 km from the finish line. Yet, the rather steep slopes of the Héndelbierg (HC/2 km at 6,1%) and the Huelewee (HC/1,7 km at 7,3%) will separate the wheat from the chaff on the final course of 20,6 km.

A time trial far from being flat

On  Friday, September 16th,  the bikes need to be changed, as a 26,1 km long time trial will be on the menu. Far from being flat, the route starts at the Esplanade in Remich and climbs through the vineyards to the edge of Schengen, before following the Moselle river to return to Remich again for the stage finish. A preliminary decision can be expected in the fight for the overall victory.

However, the final clash will only take place on  Saturday, September 17th.  Traditionally, this stage leads from Mersch to Luxembourg-City (178,4 km), where the finish line is in front of the Hall Victor Hugo. The climbs of Nommern (cat.1/2,7 km at 5,2%), Schlindermanderscheid (HC/3,4 km at 6,6%), Kautenbach (HC/4,6 km at 4,6%) and Misärshaff (cat.1/2,2 km at 6,3%) are not the only ones that will make things complicated on the last day. With 28,5 km to go, the peloton enters the final circuit. It will pass the finish line three times, but in each round, it will have to cross the famous Pabeierbierg (825 m at 9%) with 1 km to go.

Read Your Way Through New Orleans

New Orleans is a thriving hub for festivals, music and Creole cuisine. Here, the novelist Maurice Carlos Ruffin shares books that capture its many cultural influences.

By Maurice Carlos Ruffin

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

New Orleans is a tourist destination frequented as much for its local dishes (gumbo, jambalaya, among others) as for the spectacle that is Mardi Gras — where you may run into drunk college students on spring break, but could also bump into the Grammy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste. By some counts, it’s one of the most festive cities in America, with a party or two happening almost every week.

Behind all the festivities, though, is a rich and dark history. The city is an eclectic mix of Caribbean, French, Spanish and Native American cultures, and, depending on which neighborhood you encounter, you may feel a sense of disorientation. Historically, enslaved people from other states were sometimes sent to New Orleans as punishment, but the city also served as a home base for many Haitians seeking a new life after their country gained independence in 1804.

The literature of New Orleans is an important supplement to your experience of the city. These books are both a compass to guide you through its many different influences and a celebration of the free spirit that has made the city a haven for itinerant artists, writers and travelers in search of a new perspective.

What should I read before I pack my bags?

“Economy Hall: The Hidden History of a Free Black Brotherhood ,” by Fatima Shaik, provides a fascinating look at the city from the slavery era through the Jazz Age. Using primary documents that her father rescued from a trash hauler’s pickup truck, Shaik builds a nonfiction narrative that’s both illuminating and compulsively readable.

“New Orleans Griot: The Tom Dent Reader ,” a collection of Dent’s writings edited by Kalamu ya Salaam, covers the life of an important literary figure. These pieces provide an insider’s view of the city’s legendary Mardi Gras Indians , as well as Mississippi’s Free Southern Theater during the Black Arts movement. In many ways, modern New Orleans writers are descendants of Dent and his cohort.

Also consider a Pulitzer Prize-winning cult classic: John Kennedy Toole’s “A Confederacy of Dunces.” It is somewhat of a riff on Don Quixote and captures the cockeyed whimsy that helps natives live in a city that is below sea level and perpetually threatened with destruction by the forces of nature.

What books or authors should I bring along with me?

“Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas ,” by Rebecca Solnit and Rebecca Snedeker, is a collection of essays that touches on almost every neighborhood in the city. Published in 2013, several years after the catastrophic damage caused during Hurricane Katrina and the government’s response , these snapshots will help orient the reader as they travel from place to place. One essay, for example, traces the connection between the city’s vibrant marching band culture and how those young members go on to become professional musicians.

Definitely read Sarah M. Broom’s memoir, “ The Yellow House ,” the 2019 winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction. This book deftly weaves the history of one family with the development of a neighborhood called New Orleans East, depicting life outside of the tourist districts where many working-class locals live. It’s about the dreams we have and the way those dreams do and don’t come true.

If I have no time for day trips, what books could take me farther afield instead?

Do a double header of Ernest J. Gaines classics, “Bloodline” and “A Lesson Before Dying.” Both books focus on the rural Black community in Pointe Coupée Parish, La., where he was raised. His ability to compellingly render that community, which was otherwise ignored by history, is one of the many reasons he earned fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation, among other accolades.

Before Hurricane Katrina, there was another natural disaster that redefined New Orleans: the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 . John M. Barry’s “Rising Tide” examines, in enthralling prose, the flood’s consequences for the people who lived in the rural parts of Louisiana that lacked levee protection. The book is a tale of government mismanagement and neglect that foreshadowed the arrival of Katrina many decades later.

What books can take me behind closed doors?

Jarvis DeBerry was an opinion columnist for The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com for 21 years. His excellent collection of essays, “I Feel to Believe: Collected Columns , ” covers virtually every topic that was important to the life of the city between 1998 and 2019. Fearless in DeBerry’s explorations of race, policing, education, politics and the quirkiness of New Orleans, this book is a must read.

“1 Dead in the Attic: After Katrina,” by Chris Rose, is often called the definitive book about life in the city at the time of Katrina. With gallows humor and a keen eye, Rose gives the ultimate local’s perspective. For many residents who lost loved ones or property and felt abandoned by the government, this book offered catharsis.

Also, Mona Lisa Saloy has a wonderful book of poetry called “Black Creole Chronicles” that captures so much of the linguistic cadence and rhythm of locals who are heavily influenced by both African American and Francophile culture. She preserves the voices of 20th century New Orleans like no one else.

What writer is everyone in town talking about?

Karisma Price’s debut poetry collection, “ I’m Always So Serious ,” has set New Orleans buzzing with the deftness of her vision and her attention to the kind of details that show the city in a fresh way. Also, Jami Attenberg, who moved to the city about a decade ago, has become a central and supportive figure in the local literary community. She has not one but two books out this year: “ 1,000 Words: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All Year Round” and the forthcoming “A Reason to See You Again.” The first is a craft book centered around Attenberg’s popular writing program ; the latter, a novel, follows a troubled mother and her two daughters over four decades.

What literary landmarks and bookstores should I visit?

Baldwin & Co. a short walk from Jackson Square — the centerpiece of New Orleans for centuries — has become a community hub in its three years. Classic bookstores with local owners like Community Book Center and Octavia Books , which just finished an extensive renovation, are great places to learn about the city’s literary history. Also, some of New Orleans’s streetcar lines are still operational and worth a ride — especially for fans of the Tennessee Williams play “A Streetcar Named Desire.” While the Desire line no longer exists, the other lines offer great views of the city at a leisurely pace.

What else should I consider?

New Orleans has beautiful parks and public venues. Go for a walk in Crescent Park, which has gorgeous views of the downtown skyline and places to sit and read. Audubon Riverview Park, known to locals as “The Fly,” and Audubon Park proper are great places to lay out a blanket with one’s book of choice.

A trip to New Orleans must also include beignets at Cafe Du Monde . For a classic New Orleans lunch, stop by Neyow’s , Parkway Bakery or Commander’s Palace and O’Delice or Sucré for dessert. Walk through the French Quarter, take a ride on the St. Charles streetcar line and visit the New Orleans Museum of Art . When you’re ready for dinner, consider Dooky Chase , Morrow’s or Herbsaint before nightcapping at the Maple Leaf Bar or Blue Nile while listening to live music. And remember: Tip the performers — it’s good etiquette.
