Home » 10 Things to Know Before Visiting Vaishno Devi Temple

Things to Know Before Visiting Vaishno Devi Mandir

One of the most important pilgrimage sites in India lies among the mountains and clouds. Located at Trikuta Mountains in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir. Vaishno Devi is the most popular and widely visited Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess. In 2023, more than 95 lakh pilgrims visited the Vaishno Devi Temple. These numbers do not lie and it has given a boost to Kashmir tourism . Being located in one of the most breathtaking locations, Vaishno Devi is among one of the best places to visit in Kashmir .

Things to Know Before Visiting Vaishno Devi Mandir

Be it your first pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi or the curiosity to see this famous place there are a few things you should keep in mind before you go there:

Best time to visit Vaishno Devi Temple

Travel smart, registration, walk the roads, pony or doli rides, fly in the sky, pray at ardhkuwari temple, stop at sanjichhat.

Vaishno Devi Mandir

Irrespective of the time, Vaishno Devi always has its share of visitors. The best time to visit is during summer when the weather is just perfect on the mountains. If you are visiting during the monsoons or winter, you need to keep in mind that weather conditions are prone to change. Special days like New Year’s Eve, Navratras and summer vacation or festivals are very crowded. The waiting time is too long so it is best avoided to plan during this time.

The below chart helps you to find the best time to visit Vaishno Devi Temple:

Smart clothing

Depending on your time of visit, make sure you carry the right attire. If you are travelling during winter, carry gloves, scarves, and woollens to keep you warm. Also, wear comfortable shoes even if you do not plan to trek. When travelling in the summer, use lightweight cotton clothing inside because the sun is intensely bright.

You will need to register yourself for the Yatra. This can be obtained from Yatra Registration Counter at Katra and you do not need to pay for the same. Once you have a registration slip, you will have to cross the first check post at Banganga within 6 hrs of issuance of the Yatra Slip.

You have the option taking the 12 km trek from Katra. The temple lies at an altitude of 52000 feet. So you should be prepared for a long walk. The trek itself is smooth as the way is well paved. If you do not wish to walk on the slope, you have the option of climbing steep stairs as well. Start your trek at nightfall, as this will give you an amazing opportunity to catch the sight of the rising sun from the mountain beds, clasping the entire valley in its sunshine.

If you are not keen on walking or are travelling with senior citizens, you have the option of taking a pony ride as well. They have a fixed rate and you can get all relevant information about the prices and availability on various signboards or at the Assistance Centres at Katra, Banganga and other places. Battery-operated autos for senior citizens are available during the day.

Vaishno Devi By Helicopter

You also have the option of choosing a helicopter service, which is available from Katra to Sanjhichatt helipad. The service needs to be pre-booked as there is high demand for the rides.

In the middle of the journey to the Holy Shrine, the ArdhKuwari Temple cave is a must-visit. The pilgrimage to Vaishnodevi is considered incomplete till this temple is visited. It is widely believed that Mata Vaishnodevi spent 9 months in the ArdhKuwari Gufa for meditation before residing in the Vaishno Devi Bhavan and defeating the demon Bhairavnath.

A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek

Planning to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra?

Here are some useful tips and tricks:, reaching katra:.

Trains are available up to Katra Railway Station – officially named “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station” (Station Code: SVDK). From Katra railway station you will have to take autorickshaw to Fountain Chowk (Phawara Chowk). Autorickshaws charge up to Rs. 300 (Rates mentioned are as they were on May 2017).

A majority of trains culminate at Jammu Railway Station. From Jammu you can hire a cab to Katra (Rs. 1500 one side) or get a bus/mini bus (Rs. 60 per person). They will drop you at Fountain Chowk.

HOTEL BOOKING:

It is advisable to pre-book a hotel room in Katra as per your budget. There are lots of hotels from budget to luxury category. Accommodations in temple trust’s dharmashalas are subject to availability. A lot of information is available on the shrine board’s website.

PARCHI (ENTRY PASS):

The first and most important thing you have to do is to get a “parchi” – an entry pass at the “parchi counter” at Fountain Chowk. This service is free and hassle-free. You have to stand in queue. In 5-10 mins as your turn comes you have to tell your name and hometown and get yourself photographed. They give you a printed entry pass with your name. You have to keep it with yourself to show it at different check points.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 2/9 by Bee The Musafir

MODES OF REACHING THE SHRINE:

You can reach the temple on foot, pony ride, palanquin and by helicopter.

HELICOPTER BOOKING:

Pilgrims who wish to hire helicopter service should pre-book it online. Rates are decided by the trust. Booking can be done at Shrine's website .

ENTRY GATE:

After getting your “parchi”, you will have to walk down some 4-5 km to reach the first major check point named “Banganga gate”. You can either walk down to the gate, like many other pilgrims do, or you can take an autorickshaw till this point. There are separate queues for men and women.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 3/9 by Bee The Musafir

PONIES AND PALKHIS:

Ponies and palkhis are available at Banganga gate. Do pay according to the standard rates decided by the shrine trust. Rates are written on walls. You may still bargain. People with spine/back problems and pregnant women should avoid pony ride.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 4/9 by Bee The Musafir

The yatra route is open 24 x7. The trek is 15 km stretch with a good ascent. An athlete/sportsperson walking at normal speed can complete the trek in 3 hours. A regular walk/jog of 10 km for 3 months prior to yatra is advisable.

Must Read: hampta pass trek , sripuram golden temple

There is only one way up and down. Road has proper lighting. It is paved and covered with roofs. Cleanliness level is satisfactory. There are CCTV cameras in-place. Loudspeakers are there all the way for public announcements. Public toilets are easily accessible. The shrine board and pilgrims should strive to maintain the cleanliness.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 5/9 by Bee The Musafir

CROWD AND SHOPS:

Crowd depends upon season, weather and holidays. I was told that crowd is at peak during Navratri. The route is wide. Every 15-20 steps you will find shops. Shops are mostly of prasad, souvenirs, dry fruits, snacks and juices, and massage parlours. Shopkeepers are well behaved. Dustbins are around, use it and encourage others to use it.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 6/9 by Bee The Musafir

IF SOMEBODY GETS LOST:

There is no chance of people getting lost. By any chance if somebody loses the track of their group/partner/family, cellphones will help. REMEMBER – PREPAID SIM CARDS DO NOT WORK IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR.

If anyone gets lost - don’t panic - just inform the security guards stationed at every 100-200 steps or report at the shrine offices. They will announce names and locate the lost member. Shopkeepers and pilgrims are also supportive. Children are at risk of getting lost. I SUGGEST PINNING SCHOOL I-CARD ON KID’S SHIRT WITH NAME, NUMBER AND ADDRESS OF PARENTS. Also, put your hotel visiting card in their pockets. All pilgrims have to pass through Banganga Gate – entry and exit, the chances of getting detached from your group is rare.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 7/9 by Bee The Musafir

CLIMBING ON FOOT - UP:

The real test is for those who have decided to climb the mountain on foot. If you are a regular runner/jogger/athlete, it will not be tough for you.

My advice for foot pilgrims is to start the trek at sunset if you are climbing up in summer season . You will be at the temple by midnight.

For those who are not regular walkers need not to worry. It is a fun trekking. You can take as many halts. You will see most of the people walking up. This becomes a motivation in itself. You can reenergize yourself with snacks and juices. You can sit down and watch the beautiful sights. You see a mini-India here as pilgrims from different States visit this place. Even at snail pace, you should be near the sanctum sanctorum in less than 10 hours. Some families bring carpets and blankets and take naps or overnight sleep on way. PILGRIMS WHO CLIMB ON FOOT SHOULD WEAR SHOES AND TREK SUITS. NO JEANS or TIGHT CLOTHES.

DEPOSITING CELLPHONE, SHOES, BAGS:

There comes a point 3-km before the Mata Mandir where they have locker facility (free of cost). You have to deposit footwear, bags, cellphones or any metallic thing in the locker. You can carry only prasad and cash after this point. This is the last check point. There is a single queue for ladies and gents (sometimes ladies queue is different). This queue takes you through narrow marbled caves. Don’t try to jump the queue. It is a fast-moving queue, your turn will come soon. Both queues ultimately open at the same place.

BUYING PRASAD:

The place where you deposited your belongings has kiosks where the “official prasad" is sold. You will get a “prasad kit” in a bag with shrine’s logo.

DEVI DARSHAN:

The cave road divides into two somewhere in the middle. No need to worry if your group members take other road as both the roads will open at the same place. Follow the instructions written on walls. Then at a sharp turn you will see the " Vaishno Devi Mata ". Pujaris and security are lined up there to manage the crowd. You will get less than 2 mins to pray. You are 10 feet away Mata. Since you have deposited cellphone and cameras you can't take photos inside the temple.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 8/9 by Bee The Musafir

AFTER DARSHAN:

After darshan you come out of caves and you start taking deep breaths. The ambience at the top is divine – a feeling that can’t be expressed in words! Now a common road will lead you to the place where you deposited your belongings. Collect your belongings and return them the keys.

TREK TO BHAIRAVNATH:

Bhairavnath shrine is a few more kilometers up from here. You can take a long break before you start for Bhairav Mandir. Quality food is available in number of outlets at this point. Outlets like Café Coffee Day have kiosks here. Best part is that they are all no-profit outlets. You get food at subsidized rates. After a 30 mins to an hour break, you should start for Bhairavnath Mandir.

CLIMBING DOWN ON FOOT:

Descent is tougher than ascent. You can develop thigh or knee pain. Massage centers are available. While coming down towards Banganga gate, you can buy souvenirs and collectibles. If you are doing Bhairavnath trek, there is ANOTHER ROAD towards Banganga. This road is less crowded. It meets the main route in the middle.

STEPS OR PAVED ROAD?

Steps will make your journey shorter, but it requires good amount of thigh strength. Paved roads have rush of pilgrims and ponies. You can alter between the paved roads and steps.

PHONE AND INTERNET:

Only POSTPAID or local SIM CARDS work here. Cellphone and internet are well within range.

WHAT TO WEAR?

Seasonal clothing, wear loose clothes maintaining the decency and sanctity of the place. Avoid tight and fashionable clothes. It will only make your journey tougher. Women should avoid wearing heavy makeup (trek can sweat you profusely on a warm day) and expensive jewelry. Though there are no reported cases of pick-pocketing or thefts, one should not take chances. Shoes with good grip are most important. Chappals and sandals will slow down your speed and may result in boils and blisters on feet.

WHAT ALL SHOULD BE IN MY BAG?

Bag should be a handbag/school-bag size. Avoid polythene bags. Water bottles, napkins, towel, extra tee-shirt, energy drink (glucose etc.; avoid Coke, Pepsi), light snacks, toilet kit (soap, handwash, deodorants), torch, money, charger, old newspapers for rough use, carpet or bed sheets. Your own visiting card or a chit with your name and number and the local hotel/accommodation card should be in your pocket and bag and with every member of your group. The less weight you carry - the better!

MEDICAL AID:

Carry your medicines and mini first aid box. There are dispensaries on the route. Chronic patients should consult their doctors before taking up this yatra.

HOW MUCH CASH SHOULD I CARRY?

For solo up to a group of three, minimum cash in hand should be Rs. 7,000/-. You will definitely not spend it all. By any chance if a member gets medical issues say, an ankle twist or sprain or develops cramps, you will have to hire a pony or palkhi. Don’t rely on ATMs. For a 15 km trek lasting 10 hours, one person will spend an average of Rs. 500-1000 on juices, tea, snacks, prasad, donations etc.)

Shopping should be done on way back. Souvenirs, devi mata photos, prasad, dry fruits, etc. are decked up at thousands of shops on both the sides along the route. Most shops are open 24x7.

PONIES, DONKEYS AND MONKEYS:

For foot pilgrims, marching ponies are a big nuisance. They hurriedly cross your road or come from the opposite directions. They stink badly. Donkeys, used to carry ration and supplies to the top, also irk a walker. They do have separate lane marked for them, but neither pilgrims nor the pony men follow it. Monkeys, not present throughout the way, have an eye on eatables. You are at risk of getting your eatable robbed by the monkeys. Keep distance from animals. Don't throw stones at them.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 9/9 by Bee The Musafir

MAPS AND DIRECTIONS:

You don’t need maps or guides here. The flow of pilgrims will take you to the temple. You won’t get lost as there is only one route! If you want to check the distance and altitude, you can always use the fitness apps.

LOCALS’ BEHAVIOR?

Locals (service providers like drivers, shopkeepers, pony men, hotel staff etc.) are good people and cooperative. This may be due to their busy business owing to the large and continuous inflow of pilgrims. You don’t have risk of getting cheated as there are many options available and rates are decided by shrine trust or taxi/hotel unions.

BE A RESPONSIBLE PILGRIM:

My request to all pilgrims is to behave responsibly. Don't loiter the place. Use dustbins to dispose off trash. There are no beggars, but if you find any, don't encourage them by giving alms. Don't make other pilgrims uncomfortable. Don't touch or harass the animals. Help others as need be, especially, the elderly.

Enjoy the trek. Jai Mata Di.

An Introduction

Begin your sojourn to attain what you have been seeking with Vaishno Devi darshan at the holy abode of Mata Adi Shakti. Located amid the folds of Trikoot Parvat in Jammu and Kashmir, Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is among the holiest shrines as per Hinduism. The Goddess Vaishno also known by the names Mata Rani, Trikuta and Vaishnavi is believed to be the granter of boon and no pilgrim goes empty handed from her abode. Which is why devotees take a Vaishno Devi tour at least once in their lifetime to seek the blessings of the goddess and wash off their sins.

Our Vaishno Devi Patnitop tour package takes you to the holy cave of Mata Vaishno so that you enrich yourself with tranquility. The 3 nights and 4 days itinerary make sure that you travel to the temple with utmost comfort and also have a memorable time at Patnitop. Go through the itinerary for more details.

  • Pay regards at the abode of Mata Vaishno Devi
  • Have a splendid time at Katra
  • Admire and explore the verdant greenery of Patnitop

As soon as you arrive at Jammu railway station or airport, your sojourn to Vaishno Devi Temple will commence. Our tour representative will guide you for the road trip to Katra which is located 50 km away from Jammu. As soon as you reach Katra, you will be escorted to the hotel, where you can relax for the night.

Today you will finally embark on the holy Vaishno Devi tour. The shrine sits at an elevation of 5300 ft. and is counted among one of the Shakti Peethas. Maa Durga is worshipped here as Vaishno Devi, a central deity in the Shaktism tradition of Hinduism. The distance between Katra and Bhawan is 13 km which can be covered by helicopter, ponies or palanquins.

As you step into the Vaishno Devi Bhawan, chants and clashing cymbals will soothe your senses. Spend some time at the shrine and seek blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi who is worshipped in the form of three natural rock formations, known as pindies. The pindies belong to Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

Later, head back to your hotel in Katra for night stay.

On day 3 you will be visiting Patnitop from Katra via road. It will take around 3 hours to reach the destination snuggled in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. As the name suggests, Patnitop is a hill top tourist location seated at an elevation of 2,024 m (6,640 ft.) and is adorned with lush greenery. The Chenab River flows near Patnitop, which adds more charm to the destination.

Upon arrival, check-in to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Guests can explore the panoramic and tranquil surroundings. Finish the day with a delectable dinner and relax for the night.

This is the last day of your spiritually enlightening Vaishno Devi tour with Patnitop. After having a wholesome breakfast, you will be escorted to the railway station/airport for the journey ahead.

Mythology of mata vaishno devi temple.

itenary

Mata Vaishno Devi was born as Vaishnavi and was asked by the goddesses who created her to live on earth and spend her time attaining the high level of consciousness. She was then later directed by Lord Rama to set up an Ashram at the base of Trikuta Hills, meditate and grow spiritually; and she did as she was directed.

When the goddess started to stay in Trikuta Hills in Katra, Mahayogi Guru Goraksh Nathji sent his disciple, Bhairon Nath to test if the goddess had attained the higher level of spirituality yet. However, Bhairon Nath gradually lost the sense of purpose and fell in love with her, and started to annoy her to marry him.

In order to continue her Tapasya/meditation undisturbed, Vaishnavi fled to the mountains but was chased by Bhairon Nath. The goddess killed him and while dying, Bhairon Nath realized his mistake, and thus, asked for forgiveness. Mata Vaishno Devi not only forgave him but also granted him a boon. Each devotee performing a pilgrimage needs to have the Darshan of Bhairon after the goddess’; and only then would the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra will be complete.

Direct helicopter service from Jammu to Vaishno Devi starts! Know the packages being provided to pilgrims

I n a major relief to pilgrims wanting to visit Mata Vaishno Devi temple, the direct helicopter service from Jammu to the temple began today, June 25, PTI reported citing officials.

This service complements the existing helicopter route between Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims who are there to visit the famous shrine atop Reasi district’s Trikuta hills, and Sanjhi Chhat near the temple, which charges Rs 2,100 per person for a one-way trip.

Pilgrims choosing the service from Jammu can select from two packages: Rs 35,000 per passenger for a same-day return, and Rs 60,000 per person for a next-day return. The inaugural flight for the new service departed from Jammu airport around 11 am, landing at Panchi helipad along the new trek to the shrine.

“The service is part of continuous efforts to provide better facilities to the pilgrims visiting the shrine,” Anshul Garg, Chief Executive Officer of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) said after the inauguration.

“We have been getting requests from the pilgrims from faraway places within the country and abroad, facing time constraints, for a direct service between Jammu and the shrine,” Garg continued.

According to the officials, the new helicopter service was initiated under the directions of the shrine board chairman and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Based on the feedback from the pilgrims on the operation, the board will approach its expansion in the future. Garg also mentioned that the Panchi helipad’s lower elevation makes it less affected by bad weather compared to Sanjhi Chhat.

A pilgrim from Madhya Pradesh, who used the service with his family, praised its comfort and suitability for those with time constraints, the elderly, and children.

Bharat Gaurav Train: IRCTC adds Ram Lalla darshan in special tourist train; check routes, timings and full schedule

Indian Railways is all set to take its passengers on another spiritual journey and welcome pilgrims on a new adventure by running the Bharat Gaurav Special Tourist Train from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

This train was started for the first time on 18 May 2024. The first tour started for eight Nights and nine days which commenced its journey on 18 May 2024 and concluded on 26 May 2024.

The program is aimed at covering important tourist destinations in Northern India like Mata Vaishno Devi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Ayodhya.

Bharat Gaurav Train: Routes

The special Bharat Gaurav Train will depart from New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

The special tourist train will visit four significant Hindu holy sites, beginning with the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra and ending at the newly constructed majestic Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

Keeping the interest of the pilgrims in mind, the railways have included Ram Lalla's Darshan in the new package that will start from today, June 24, 2024. The special Bharat Gaurav Train, which departed New Jalpaiguri Junction at 10 a.m. today, will arrive at Patna Junction about 11:30 p.m. tomorrow before continuing to Katra Railway Station in Jammu & Kashmir on June 26. It would then continue for Ayodhya, stopping in Mathura and Haridwar before landing at the Ayodhya Cantonment Railway Station on July 2, 2024.

Bharat Gaurav Train: Full schedule

vaishno devi mandir trip

The new route for the Bharat Gaurav Train (00980) will be starting from New Jalpaiguri for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Haridwar, Mathura, and Ayodhya for Uttar Bharat with Ramlala Darshan from June 24, 2024, to July 2, 2024, as the North Frontier Railway mentioned in a post on X.

The train will consist of 14 coaches that include an AC Buffet car, AC three-tier sleeper, 3-tier sleeper, luggage cum generator car and brake.

As this tour covers the majority of the destinations in one trip rather than the much greater cost of planning each one separately, it will prove beneficial for the people living in North Bengal and the states that border it.

Bharat Gaurav Train: Fare

According to the official site of IRCTC, passengers will have to pay at least Rs 18,250 for this Ayodhya Dham Yatra. On double or triple booking, you will have to pay Rs 18,250 per passenger in standard and Rs 22,240 per passenger in comfort. Whereas, for children aged between 5 to 11 years, Rs 16,670 will have to be paid for standard and Rs 20,015 for comfort.

In keeping with the Government of India's initiatives "Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat" and "Dekho Apna Desh," Bharat Gaurav is the first special train for tourists. Travellers can reserve their tickets on the IRCTC website and begin their trip.

Last month, the Northeast Frontier Railway operated a similar Bharat Gaurav Train which originated from Jalpaiguri on May 18 and covered major destinations like Mata Vaishno Devi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mathura, Vrindavan and Ayodhya across northern India.
