A cool start to the season delayed flowering and slowed early vine growth, but by late December our organic farming practices had the vineyard well placed for another stellar vintage. Healthy canopies kept the grapes cool, preserving freshness through one of our hottest ever summers, resulting in whites of fruit purity and incredible vitality.

Our fresh take on a contemporary Cabernet. The Modern celebrates what our organically farmed soils produce best. This medium-bodied, red-and-dark-fruited style is what we like to call a ‘serious drink now wine,’ whilst we predict it will age just as well.

Crafted from a combination of Tempranillo, Merlot and Shiraz fruit, with some skin contact Viognier adding textural complexity. An excellent food wine, but equally delicious as a crisp sundowner.

Cabernet but not as you know it, early-drinking, juicy and elegant, a nod to the strong coastal influence that defines our distinct style.

The warm dry weather experienced during the 2018 vintage provided the perfect conditions for crafting a Cane Cut Semillon, a vibrant and concentrated dessert wine with a lovely balance of sweetness and acidity.

With fantastic ripening towards the end of the growing season, the 2012 vintage produced a cabernet that is looking incredibly bright and youthful. A wine of great structure, complexity and depth, that still has many years of cellaring ahead.

An elegant Shiraz with that classic Margaret River energy and drive. Bursting with red berries and rhubarb, with hints of earth and spice. A soft, juicy style that is delicious all year round.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc

Venturing into the world of sparkling wines, Voyager showcases undeniable elegance. While one might anticipate Chardonnay given Voyager's commendable track record, this creation is entirely sourced from Chenin Blanc, specifically from Weightmans Block 1 of Voyager Estate. The choice of this Chenin patch hinges on its early ripening nature, culminating in robust flavor profiles at minimal sugar levels while preserving intrinsic acidity.

Upon hand-harvesting, the fruit undergoes a delicate whole-bunch pressing. After an overnight settling, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Embracing the age-old Champagne technique, post a brief tank maturation, the wine finds its way into bottles by the end of May. It continues its journey on lees until October, post which it undergoes disgorging, complemented by a light dosage.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc 2020

As you might expect, Voyager’s foray into the sparkling arena has class plastered all over it. Perhaps surprisingly however—given this producer’s enviable reputation with Chardonnay—it was crafted entirely from Chenin Blanc (drawn from Voyager Estate’s Weightmans Block 1). This patch of Chenin was selected due to its early ripening characteristics, which result in full flavour development at low sugar levels and with excellent natural acidity. 

Hand-harvested, the fruit was gently whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Made using the traditional Champagne method, following a short maturation in tank the wine was bottled in late May. It remained on lees until October when it was disgorged with a light dosage of four to five g/L sugar. Cheninpagne!

Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc

This sparkling wine forms part of Voyager Estate’s ‘Project’ range and it is a rather exciting addition at that. Voyager Estate is well known for their excellent wines, in particular their Margaret River heros, Cabernet and Chardonnay line ups. The estate also produces a fine Chenin Blanc. This sparkling chenin is a tip of the hat to sparkling Vouvray , a region and style that should be much more popular.

In the glass, these bubbles shine fresh and bright. The aromas of apple, floral and talc take on a slight smoky nuance as well as a spiciness. That soft spice and cream arises from spending just 6 months resting on lees. Just enough to gain a subtle complexity leaving the fruit to the limelight. It also has added some weight, although it is still little more than medium bodied. There is plenty of generosity in the intensity of fruit. The intensity of that sweetly ripe fruit rounds out the palate and just a small dollop of sugar (round 6 gram/Litre) works to balance out and soften the acid.

It is a wine that has wide appeal and certainly offers lovers of Prosecco more than just soft, sweet and fruity bubbles. Pop a bottle to enjoy anytime bubbles are called for. However, I would enjoy it anytime. With canapes, with lunch, with dinner, or simply with friends…..

CHENIN BLANC RENAISSANCE

In celebration of International Drink Chenin Day on 17th June, we're shining a light on the world’s most versatile grape, and one that has been a part of our story since the beginning…

Chenin Blanc is having a moment. Across the country, adventurous winemakers from the Swan Valley to Margaret River and beyond are pushing the boundaries, elevating the grape to new heights with exciting expressions popping up on every wine list.

Originally hailing from the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc is infamous for making wines up and down the scale, from crisp sparkling styles to lusciously sweet dessert wines. 

Voyager Estate Winemaker, Travis Lemm, suggests that the allure is in its ability to express the terroir of where it’s grown more than any other grape variety. 

“It’s a bit of a chameleon really – very reflective of the season, the climate, and the soil type of where it’s grown. It loves the cool of the Loire but does equally well here in Margaret River where the seasons are consistently warm. The adaptability of the variety means the possibilities for experimentation are endless.” 

At Voyager, we are proud to say that Chenin Blanc isn’t a new proposition – it is firmly part of our DNA, with heritage vines on our Estate dating back to original 1978 plantings. Our fascination began with an easy-drinking fruit-driven style, which has evolved into a wine with more palate definition and savoury tones. The introduction of barrel fermentation to select parcels adds layers of complexity and builds a platform around the amazing natural acidity of the variety.

With each passing season, our team have tapped into the grape’s versality more and more, exploring different clones and sites to craft expressive wines that reflect the nuances of our coastal home.

Over time, they realised our organically farmed Weightmans Block 1 vineyard produced Chenin Blanc fruit with stunning purity and freshness – perfect for making a sparkling aperitif style. 

“We set out to craft a new wine that was distinctly Western Australian and suited our sunny climate and lifestyle, and I think we’ve proven what can be achieved when judicious work is done in the vineyard and the right sites are expressed. It’s a truly delicious, great value sparkling that continues to be refined each year of its journey," Travis continued.  

Our 2021 Sparkling Chenin Blanc displays light citrus and fresh green apple, with elegance and complexity from time spent on lees – a new release with plenty of mojo that pairs beautifully with Western Australia’s incredible local seafood.

As vintage wraps up for another year and the team look ahead to what’s next, Travis says the journey of exploration will continue with the first organically farmed crops coming into the winery from our newly established plantings of the ‘Noack’ clone.

“We have sourced our cuttings from the Swan Valley and are super excited by the loose bunch formation and spectrum of fruit this particular clone produces. The aim is to craft a new wine – the Project U9 Chenin – which will be handpicked and whole bunch pressed, with fermentation taking place in old oak. It will be a more serious, structured look at the variety and will take Chenin Blanc at our Estate to the next level in the coming years – watch this space.”
