USC football recruiting: Thoughts on Trojans’ setbacks, strategy after decommitments

LOS ANGELES — USC found itself in the news quite a bit during June, one of the busiest periods on the recruiting calendar. Let’s get to some thoughts on the Trojans’ 2025 recruiting class, where things stand and what it all means.

Note: All rankings are per the 247Sports Composite.

1. USC’s 2025 class is exiting June in worse shape than it entered the month.

There’s no argument about that. The Trojans landed commitments from two four-stars: edge rusher Hayden Lowe of Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) and corner Shamar Arnoux of Carrollton (Ga.). Those additions shouldn’t be overlooked, but they don’t cancel out what USC’s class has lost of late.

It started last week when four-star Isaiah Gibson and five-star Justus Terry — two top-50 defensive line prospects who are from the state of Georgia — decommitted on back-to-back days. Then on Thursday evening, four-star safety Hylton Stubbs, a top-100 prospect nationally, decommitted as well.

That’s the blueprint for how a class that was top-five nationally to start June falls all the way to 31st in the span of 10 days or so.

The importance of the 2025 cycle for USC is clear with Lincoln Riley entering his third season as Trojans coach and in his third full recruiting cycle. He’s upgraded USC’s roster from what he inherited, but the program still needs an injection of high-end talent to compete for Big Ten titles and College Football Playoff appearances on a consistent basis.

go-deeper

USC recruiting: What we know, don't know and should watch for with the 2025 class

The Trojans aren’t recruiting at an elite level and really haven’t since the first few months of Riley’s tenure. Landing commitments from Terry, Gibson and Stubbs in March gave the fan base hope that this was going to be a truly elite class. So when the program suffers these setbacks, it creates only more questions and anxiety about USC’s recruiting, name, image and likeness and everything else that goes into the operation —  a subject that has already created plenty of angst among the program’s supporters.

2. The decommitments by Terry and Gibson weren’t all that surprising.

When has USC ever landed multiple high-caliber defensive linemen from the Southeast in the same class? And on top of that, the Trojans were competing with an in-state program — Georgia — that has a tremendous track record of producing NFL defensive linemen, plays defense at an elite level and is a constant presence in the national championship picture.

Gibson committed to Georgia this week, and the Bulldogs and several other programs are heavily pursuing Terry. High-profile programs will be involved with Stubbs, too.

That puts a microscope on USC’s recruiting strategy. Riley wants the Trojans to be a national recruiting outfit, which sounds good in theory, but there’s some question if the juice has been worth the squeeze.

Riley did have a great first season at USC but followed that up with a majorly disappointing sophomore campaign that made it clear he’s still trying to rebuild. It’s difficult to win national recruiting battles against some of the sport’s powers when your program isn’t completely established. USC would likely need to blow prospects away with NIL, and though strides have been made, the program has never been super aggressive in using that as a tool for high school prospects. The coaching staff doesn’t have the reputation of being made up of relentless recruiters like Georgia, Oregon, Miami and others.

The Trojans come up short in a lot of these high-profile recruiting battles.

There have been good standalone victories like Kameryn Fountain , who was a four-star defensive lineman and a top-10 prospect in Georgia during the 2024 cycle, but USC usually ends up with the best-of-the-rest prospects from some of the states it devotes a lot of resources to.

The Trojans recruited in Texas a lot during the 2023 recruiting cycle and landed just two of the top 50 prospects from the state ( Braylan Shelby and Quinten Joyner ). Shelby was the No. 16 overall player in the state and Joyner was No. 33. It’s tough to pull recruits from there when programs like Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma really want them.

USC signed four-star offensive lineman Jason Zandamela , a notable out-of-state recruiting win in Florida, but he spent three months with the program this spring before transferring to Florida.

The Trojans have had more success landing top prospects from states like Connecticut (four-star LB Elijah Newby ) and Minnesota (four-star DL Jide Abasiri ) or elsewhere (four-star LB Desman Stephens II from Michigan) — places that aren’t necessarily talent hotbeds and generally don’t produce the same caliber of elite player as Florida, Georgia and Texas.

3. So USC isn’t recruiting at the highest levels nationally, and though it hasn’t completely alienated Southern California, it hasn’t emphasized its backyard like previous coaching staffs.

There were 36 blue-chip recruits in California last cycle, and USC signed just four of them. There are 34 blue-chip prospects in California this cycle, and USC holds commitments from two of them. Meanwhile, Texas A&M might have commitments from three of the state’s top five players by the end of the weekend.

Five-star corner Dijon Lee, the top-rated player in California, is announcing his college decision on Friday, and the Trojans aren’t finalists. Four-star top-100 linebacker Noah Mikhail, another local product, is set to announce his decision on Sunday. USC is a finalist but 247Sports national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman just logged a crystal ball in the Aggies’ favor .

If USC isn’t landing the best players nationally or locally, it leaves one to wonder what the program’s recruiting identity is.

4. Riley wants to follow something similar to the model Michigan used to win the national championship: Recruit and develop with elite coaching.

Recent history hasn’t been kind to the development of Riley’s recruiting classes, though. The Athletic ’s Max Olson re-ranks recruiting classes after four years.

Oklahoma ’s 2020 class ranked 12th, but it fell out of the top 25 in the re-rank . The Sooners’ 2019 class ranked sixth and fell out of the top 25 in that year’s re-rank. Their 2018 class ranked ninth but also fell out of the top 25 once re-ranked. Those were Riley’s first three recruiting classes at Oklahoma.

USC’s coach has to reverse the trend. One could point to Riley’s defensive staffs being subpar, which is true, but he also bears the responsibility of making the hires. The Trojans’ current defensive staff is probably the best Riley has had since becoming a head coach in 2017.

If USC is going to improve its recruiting and development, it’s the new defensive staffers who are likely going to play a heavy role. They set the recruiting trail on fire in March, but after this wave of decommitments, they’ll have to demonstrate major improvements this fall to add more credibility to their pitch.

5. USC’s offensive line recruiting needs to improve.

The West Coast doesn’t produce a ton of blue-chip offensive linemen, but there were two in Northern California this cycle in Jackson Lloyd and Champ Taulealea.

Lloyd committed to Alabama last week, and Taulealea committed to Washington earlier in the month. Those were two rough losses.

Offensive line coach Josh Henson can bounce back by landing four-star offensive lineman Carde Smith, of Williamson (Mobile, Ala.), who recently took a visit to USC and decommitted from Auburn this past week.

As much talk as there is about how the Trojans need more talent on the defensive line, they need more high-caliber players on the offensive line as well.

6. It looks like five-star quarterback commit Julian “Juju” Lewis will remain part of the class.

Lewis took visits to Indiana, Auburn and Colorado, but is still pledged to USC. The Trojans’ most recent commitment, Arnoux, is Lewis’ high school teammate at Carrollton (Ga.), so that should help their efforts. But we’ll see if there are any developments on the Lewis front.

7. More commitments coming?

Riley generally tweets a✌️emoji when USC receives a commitment. He tweeted six of said emojis throughout the month of June, but there were only two public commits for the Trojans — Lowe and Arnoux.

That suggests four potential commitments are unaccounted for, so maybe there are coming additions for this class.

8. USC’s class has seven three-stars to four blue-chip prospects.

We’re not shaming three-star prospects — a lot of them turn out to be good players — but USC needs more blue-chip talent on the roster and in this recruiting class.

The No. 406 player nationally is the last four-star prospect in the Composite rankings. USC has three prospects ranked between Nos. 410-430 nationally, so it’s not inconceivable those commits make a leap and turn into blue-chippers, which would boost the Trojans’ rankings.

But, clearly, more work needs to be done by the staff as well in several different aspects.

Talent Tracker: USC hopes its Georgia efforts aren't waste of time, a wide-open Big 12 and this week's awards

Elsewhere, purdue lands the highest-ranked of four 'lebrons' in the 2025 class.

lincolnrileyusc.jpg

Your weekly serving of  college football  roster acquisition thoughts -- recruiting , transfer portal , you name it -- from 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins .

Was USC's  recruiting push into Georgia worth it?

Trojans lose 66% of peach state 5-stars.

With Lincoln Riley preparing for life in the new-look Big Ten, the Trojans have spent more and more time looking for difference-makers in the state of Georgia. Last recruiting cycle, USC pulled a pair of promising pass-rushers out of the Peach State in Kameryn Fountain and Lorenzo Cowan as well as jumbo tight end  Walter Matthews .

The early returns on Fountain, a top-60 recruit who participated in spring practices after a favorable showing at the annual All-American Bowl, have been rather promising for a program that's trying to rebuild a broken defense, but his addition might have given the Trojans a little false confidence in one of the most talent-rich regions of the country.

Last week, USC's 2025 recruiting class suffered a pair of major defections when five-star defensive linemen Justus Terry and Isaiah Gibson both backed off verbal commitments to US C. The news came as a surprise to some, but not to those that eat, breathe and sleep recruiting. After all, both are considered major priorities for Georgia, and Kirby Smart tends to get what he wants, especially at the point of attack. In fact, Gibson committed to Georgia on Monday, six days after his USC decommitment.

We won't turn this week's column into a soapbox and make any proclamations that Riley and his staff should blacklist any and all Peach State recruits, especially as their recruiting efforts are certainly better than the preceding staff's , but some self-awareness could go a long way, even in the Name, Image, Likeness era. Before Terry and Gibson, the Trojans tried to steal another blue-chip defensive lineman from the Bulldogs' backyard in five-star Mykel Williams . The result was no different as the No. 7 overall prospect in the class of 2022 flipped his pledge from USC to Georgia two months before the signing period.

But what about Fountain? One could make the case that he's the exact type of talent that the Trojans should be targeting in SEC country. UGA did its homework on Fountain and had him on campus, but he never appeared to be a tier one target for the Bulldogs, who finished with the nation's top-ranked class in 2024 . Not everyone has the appetite for leftovers, but Plan B at Georgia can certainly be Plan A for others, especially when you are located in an area that's light on the big bodies. Just ask Dan Lanning.

Since Lanning arrived at Oregon , the Ducks have done an admirable job of scouring the country for potential high-impact trench players while at the same time avoiding a ton of head-to-head battles with the Bulldogs (Lanning, more than anybody, knows what he'd be up against head-to-head vs. Smart). Oregon certainly hasn't gotten everyone on the wish list, but 2024's defensive line haul for Oregon rivaled what many did in the SEC and it included prospects that called  California , Arizona , Oklahoma and Missouri home.

julianlewsi.jpg

Of course, there's one other Peach State-based five-star that USC is heavily involved with and that's longtime quarterback commit Julian Lewis . Quarterback recruiting is its own animal (more on that later), but it's hard to fault Riley for courting the modern-day protege even if Lewis were to end up at Colorado , Auburn or Indiana , three schools he's visited since Memorial Day. A flip, somewhere, could absolutely be on the table .

Lewis fits perfectly into what Riley wants to do on offense as he can manipulate defenses with his eyes while throwing with precision. Still, if the Trojans were to go 0-for-3 on five-stars in Georgia after striking out on Williams three years prior, it might be time for an intervention. There might be better way to spend their recruiting resources and energy.

Race for Big 12's top recruiting class is wide-open

True pecking order unlikely to materialize .

With Texas and Oklahoma off to the SEC, the Big 12 is wide open for the taking. Opinions vary on who should be viewed as the conference favorite (or favorites) moving forward and a quick glance at the Big 12 recruiting class rankings doesn't provide much clarity, either. At least not right now.

As we approach the NCAA's summer dead period, it's TCU , West Virginia and Arizona State sitting 1-2-3 in the rankings. The Horned Frogs finished last cycle ranked No. 2 in the Big 12, but the Mountaineers and Wildcats slotted in behind plenty of others. And that's what should make things rather interesting over the next few weeks -- years? -- in the Big 12 as there should be no shortage of jockeying in the rankings.

Take Kansas State for example. The Wildcats' class currently ranks No. 15 in the Big 12 with 11 prospects committed, but could shoot up the board this upcoming Monday when five-star tight end Linkon Cure announces his decision live on the 247Sports' YouTube channel as Chris Klieman has his program in prime position to land what could be its highest-ranked recruit in school history .

UCF is another school to keep an eye on. Gus Malzahn and the Knights rank No. 10 in the conference right now , but welcomed a ton of blue-chip talent to campus the first few weeks of June and are trying to flip multiple high-profile prospects from College Football Playoff regulars.

From a talent evaluator's eye, t here's a lot to get excited about when it comes to Houston and what Willie Fritz have done in such a short amount of time . The Cougars have the No. 7-ranked class in the Big 12 and it's full of high-upside prospects with NFL traits. Sources also indicate that they are nowhere close to being done.

Then there's Colorado, which sits last in the Big 12 rankings with five commits (its class ranks No. 78 nationally). Deion Sanders has pushed all his chips forward for Shedeur's senior season, but it's unclear what the long-term plan is in Boulder. The Buffs have hosted the aforementioned Julian Lewis multiple times, but Colorado's staff conducted just a handful of summer official visits otherwise. 'Coach Prime' is always good for a signing day splash or two, but he's got his work cut out for him if plans to replenish his roster with high schoolers.

QB recruiting hitting light speed

Why that's not a good thing

You probably at some point have heard that quarterback recruiting has accelerated. That's true, but take whatever you thought that meant and strap it to a rocket ship because the timeline for quarterback recruiting is entering another galaxy.

At this time last year, just one of the 19 quarterbacks inside the current Top247 for the class of 2025 had made a public commitment: Tavien St. Clair to Ohio State . Fast forward to this year with the class of 2026 and it's a completely different story with eight of the 16 quarterbacks ranked inside the Top247 already committed. That includes six of the 10 best at the position ( as 247Sports detailed recently in a QB dominoes series ).

"Enrolling early was a big factor in the timing," 2025 prospect Tavien St. Clair told CBS Sports at the Elite 11 Finals, speaking about his early commitment. "Obviously it was two full years before the start of my first college season, but it's big for the quarterback to jump in early and recruit the guys he wants around him."

A polling of college contacts didn't yield many answers as to what is different with this wave of signal-callers, but everyone seems to agree kids are trying to lock in spots and schools don't want to come up empty-handed. That sounds fine in theory, but taking quarterbacks that have yet to play their junior seasons of high school football seems like an extremely dangerous practice and one that will result in "drops" as many quarterbacks are naturally not going to develop how schools had hoped.

Sneaky-good commit of the week

Wr lebron hill to purdue.

Fun fact: There are four 2025 prospects in the 247Sports' database with the first name Lebron. We don't work for the U.S. Census Bureau, but the LeBron James legacy movement appears to be here. Lebron Hill is the highest-ranked of the bunch and his decision to flip his commitment from Louisville to Purdue earlier this week is a big deal for the Boilermakers , who have relied heavily on the transfer portal the past two years to add depth at wide receiver.

A basketball-focused athlete throughout his youth, Hill is a green outside wide receiver prospect with plenty of size that's just starting to figure things out. He impressed last month at an Overtime OT7 event down in Florida , making multiple 50-50 grabs in the end zone. He gives Purdue a potential cheat code in the red zone with his 6-foot-4 frame.

'Freak' of the week

Qb kamario taylor ( mississippi state commit).

The Elite 11 Finals took place last week and it was an abnormally large and athletic group of quarterbacks. While a handful of them are going to make our annual Freaks List , we wanted to highlight Kamario Taylor because he has college recruiting departments buzzing behind the scenes.

The four-sport athlete out of Mississippi's Noxubee County is built like a defensive end at a hulking 6-foot-3.5, 205 pounds, but moves like a running back. It took him a while to find his bearings in Los Angeles, but he ended the event on a high note, leading all participants with seven touchdown passes on the final day. New Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby is known for his veer-and-shoot attack, but he's never really had a quarterback built like Taylor, nor one that's so raw at this stage as a passer. That makes for an interesting fit in Starkville.

USC fans don’t have to overthink the 2024 college football season

Trojans Wire hosts a USC football fan call-in show on Fridays at The Voice of College Football. Our most recent show on Friday, June 28 elicited a spirited conversation which became surprisingly contentious. In one sense, I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised by the reaction, but I was. The surprise came from a caller and another commentator saying that yes, it’s bad for USC if the Trojans make the College Football Playoff but then get blown out in the first round. You can watch the show for yourself and see what you think, but yes, that was a real opinion being advanced.

Look, folks: USC hasn’t made the College Football Playoff yet. That’s 10 seasons from 2014 through 2023 without a single College Football Playoff appearance. Would it be unpleasant if the Trojans make the playoff in 2024 only to get crushed in the first round? Sure. However, saying that you’d rather miss the playoff than make it, if it means losing by 30 in the first round, is crazypants.

Making the playoff is better than not making it. Period. End of discussion. Well, not end of discussion, because we’ll spend more time talking about this point.

Anyway, here’s the show below. Judge for yourself at The Voice of College Football:

USC Football: Trojans D-Line Coach Opens Up About Recruiting Losses

Eva geitheim | jun 21, 2024.

  • USC Trojans

USC's football program saw two huge recruiting losses this week, as two of their three five-star recruits from the class of 2025 de-committed from the program. Defensive linemen Isaiah Gibson and Justus Terry, who both hail from Georgia and originally committed to the program on the same day in March, each de-committed this week.

BREAKING: Five-Star Plus+ DL Justus Terry has Decommitted from USC The No. 2 DL in the ‘25 class had been committed to the Trojans since March USC loses 5-Stars on the DL in back to back days https://t.co/8kwvYtKOYt pic.twitter.com/unSEYU93CS — Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) June 19, 2024

After the two top prospects de-committed, Trojans defensive line coach Shaun Nua said the following on social media . "We will always respect the decisions each young men and their families make, and we wish them well. We also have faith in those in the foxhole with us, especially the warriors whom we are about to go to war with. The quest for finding the BEST TROJANS will always be the mission. Just don’t get it twisted, THIS IS STILL USC! FTFO!"

The tweet was reposted by USC football's account on X.

These are of course huge recruiting losses for the team, but especially for Nua and the defense. The Trojans' defense has notoriously struggled over the past couple of seasons, with the defense even ranking as low as 116th overall in the FBS last year.

The team has tried to turn this around, especially with the hiring of defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, but they will have to continue their defensive turnaround without these two-star defensive recruits.

Now, the lone five-star recruit for the class of 2025 is quarterback Julian Lewis, who is the No. 1 recruit in class. Keeping Lewis will be a top priority for the Trojans over the next year.
