• To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.

Costa Rica Tours & Vacations

Travellers walking with tour guide in the jungle near Fortuna Waterfall in Costa Rica

Biodiverse, brilliantly colorful and naturally breathtaking, Costa Rica embraces a slower pace of life.

An adventure hotspot for some, a cultural haven for others and a tropical paradise for most, Costa Rica definitely lives up to its translation as the ‘rich coast.’ And as you journey under lush jungle canopies and through laidback surf towns, you’ll soon be rich with memorable experiences. Lean into the slower pace of life as you become a pro at spotting toucans in Monteverde’s steamy cloud forests or listening out for the distant whoop of white-faced capuchins in Manuel Antonio. The phrase ‘hustle and bustle’ isn’t in Costa Rica’s vocabulary, as you’d expect from a country whose unofficial motto is ‘ pura vida ’ – the pure life.

Culture and customs.

Costa Rican culture can be summed up in two words: 'pura vida', or the pure life. It's a greeting, farewell and a way to show appreciation. Like any good life motto, pura vida is better experienced than explained. It means being friendly and polite, taking it easy and being thankful for what you have. Costa Ricans' carefree way of life, coupled with living in one of Central America's most progressive and prosperous nations, makes the locals some of the happiest in the world.

You'll find that people in Costa Rica are generally in less of a hurry than most North Americans or Europeans. Following what is affectionately known as 'Tico time', people will often be fashionably late, except for things with schedules – Tico time does not apply at work, the movies or the train station.

Costa Ricans (or Ticos and Ticas) are known for their conflict-averse nature. Peace is so highly valued here that their army was abolished in 1949, with all funds reallocated to create an 'army' of teachers instead.

History and government

Ancient history.

Like most Central American countries, indigenous communities thrived for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers, and it's believed that humans have lived in Costa Rica's jungles and rainforests for as many as 10,000 years. However, with no urbanized civilization like the Aztecs or Mayas, and little to no cultural preservation during the time of Spanish colonization, not much is known about Costa Rica's true indigenous populations.

Colonization, independence, and trade

At the time of Spanish colonization, it was estimated that 400,000 people lived in what is now known as Costa Rica. Christopher Columbus arrived in the region in 1502 on his fourth voyage, leading to the settlement of the first Spanish colony in Costa Rica.

As settlements grew, indigenous populations dwindled due to disease and forced labor. After around a century, the population had fallen to 20,000, and a century later, down to 8000.

In 1821, the Americas broke free of Spanish control following the Mexican War of Independence. Costa Rica became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823 before gaining complete independence in 1838

Costa Rica eventually found its feet in the global coffee trade, and by the end of the century, coffee crops accounted for nearly 90% of Costa Rica's exports and 80% of its foreign income. Not only was coffee production an indicator of wealth in Costa Rica, it was also a powerful political tool prompting the emergence of other industries, including the banana trade, which surpassed coffee exports in the early 20th century.

Costa Rica's economy relies on eco-tourism, and the country has championed the idea that the 'rich coast' refers not to resources dug from the ground but to the natural wonders above ground. The easygoing attitude of Ticos comes from a love of their country and pride that their democracy has endured in a conflict-ridden region.

Eating and drinking

Costa Rican cuisine is wholesome and fresh, with influence from Spanish , South American , and Caribbean culinary traditions. On the Caribbean coast, you'll find dishes with Afro-Caribbean flair, usually featuring more meats, spices and coconut milk.

Capital city, San Jose, not only has an up-and-coming food scene but has established itself as the craft beer hub of Costa Rica. Enjoy seasonal samplings on a San Jose Bites and Sites tour with Urban Adventures

Look out for these favorite dishes and drinks across Costa Rica:

What to eat in Costa Rica

  • Gallo pinto Gallo pinto, the most common side dish in Costa Rica and across the Americas is served alongside meals morning, noon and night. It’s made of rice, beans, onions, peppers and spices, and the name translates to ‘speckled rooster’ because of the pops of color in the rice.
  • Casado If you eat at a ‘soda’ or a traditional Costa Rican restaurant, when traveling, chances are a casado will be on the menu. Although there are multiple variations of this tasting plate, you’ll likely get served up some gallo pinto, fried plantains and salad with either chicken, beef or fish, and freshly squeezed juice, covering all your food groups in one.
  • Chifrijo Chifrijo is a common bar snack in Costa Rica. The word is a combination of its two main ingredients – chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and frijoles (beans). The chicharrones and beans are layered together and topped with guacamole and pico de gallo and served with fresh tortilla or plantain chips for dipping.
  • Ceviche While ceviche is probably more often associated with Peru, the Tico version is a delicious variation. Made with raw fish cured in citrus juice, onions, coriander and peppers and served with tortilla chips or fried plantains, this dish is light, refreshing and a great start to a meal.
  • Patacones Patacones are deep-fried green plantains that are ideal for a snack or as a dipping device for chifrijo, guacamole or pico de gallo.
  • Sopa negra Sopa negra is a Costa Rican black bean soup, often flavoured with tomatoes and spices and served with egg and coriander.
  • Rondon Rondon is a seafood chowder that comes from Jamaica. Other Caribbean countries who’ve adopted the recipe have put their own spin on it with their choice of seafood – fish, crab, small lobster – as well as the coconut milk broth and spices.
  • Arroz con leche Sweet tooths can rejoice with this Central and South American dessert staple of arroz con leche – a spiced, sweet rice pudding made with cinnamon, cloves and raisins. Try it as a warming snack or a special dessert.
  • Pejibayes This unusual fruit comes from a type of palm known as the peach palm – the same tree that heart of palm comes from. After boiling for a few hours and discarding the inner seed and outer skin, the fruit is finished with a squeeze of lime or a dollop of mayonnaise to eat the local way. The taste has been likened to a mix between a squash, potato and cashew.

What to drink in Costa Rica

  • Coffee Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world, so you’re set for your caffeine fix during your time in Costa Rica. It has both the ideal soil composition and the perfect elevation to grow the perfect coffee crop, so be sure to sample as many fresh local brews as you can.
  • Alcohol If you’re looking for drinks of the alcoholic variety, try guaro – a liquor made from sugar cane, best enjoyed in a guaro sour (with lime, simple syrup and soda). The craft beer scene is growing quickly here as well, so look for microbrews from a multitude of small local breweries. And if you’re wondering how to say cheers, just say ‘pura vida’ again!
  • Naturales Naturales – sometimes also called refrescos or batidos – are delicious fresh fruit juices blended with either milk or water. You can find them all over the country at small kiosks or booths in a variety of flavors like mango, pineapple and guanabana.

Geography and environment

Costa Rica is known for its incredible beaches and magical rainforests. But the backbone of this coastal nation is truly stunning mountain ranges, many of which contain both active and dormant volcanoes. You’ll also find heaps of waterfalls, lakes and rivers throughout the country. For this reason, adventure sports such as zip-lining, whitewater rafting and cycling are popular in inland destinations such as La Fortuna and Montverde, and adventure-packed activities are a popular way to experience the country.

Get active on an 8 day Costa Rica: Hike, Bike & Raft trip

Costa Rica’s diverse topography is home to many microclimates, and the temperature and weather can vary dramatically depending on elevation and how close you are to the coast. Rainforests, cloud forests, jungles and mountains exist side by side. The varied land and climate foster over 5% of the world’s total biodiversity.

Witness ecological diversity firsthand on a 10 day Best of Costa Rica trip Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of plants and animals. Those seeking to spot local wildlife will be enthralled by Costa Rica’s unique flora and fauna. And the spectacular variety of wildlife isn’t limited to the land – scuba diving is another popular activity, with Costa Rica boasting some of the most beautiful bays, beaches and reefs in the world.

Four of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica

  • Tortuguero National Park One of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, this national park is the unspoiled paradise you’ve been searching for. Take a dip in Tortuguero’s warm turquoise waters or just relax on the idyllic shores
  • Manuel Antonio A true eco-playground, you can spend a day exploring misty rainforests and searching for sloths and monkeys before cooling off on one of the delightful beaches. Head into Quepos town for some good food and fiery nightlife after the sun sets.
  • Jaco Once a sleepy beach town, Jaco’s proximity to San Jose has made it a one-stop shop for those seeking big waves and even bigger parties. The gateway to national parks and active adventures , there’s no denying Jaco’s uber-cool surf-town vibe.
  • Corcovado Well off the tourist trail, Corcovado isn’t your average beach experience. Boasting a diversity of colors, landscapes and wildlife, Corcovado is perfect for those seeking beaches with character and charm. Oh, and it’s got the largest primary forest in the American Pacific, if you needed another reason to visit.

Whether you’re buying souvenirs or groceries, your best bet in Costa Rica is to shop at local markets. Head to the Mercado Calle Nacional de Artesania y Pintura (National Craft Market) in San Jose for the best selection of handmade goods and souvenirs. Here you can stroll through dozens of stalls selling handmade hammocks and painted oxcarts as well as t-shirts and shot glasses that say ‘pura vida’. San Jose's Mercado Central is also a great place to grocery shop and pick up souvenirs, and vendors offer everything from fresh produce to coffee to leather goods.

You’ll often see carved wooden masks for sale but, while all of them are beautiful, for a truly authentic mask, you should aim to buy directly from indigenous communities who make them.

As in any destination, check that any souvenirs made from natural materials have been ethically sourced. Avoid buying products made from rainforest woods that were not sustainably harvested, sea turtle shells and other animal products. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws regarding some materials, such as food and wooden objects.

Festivals and events

Costa Ricans definitely know how to throw a party, and place a lot of importance on food, family and community. Many Costa Rican festivals celebrate the country’s farming and ranch heritage, and a lot have a Catholic element. No matter which festival you’re celebrating, you’re pretty much guaranteed a deep dive into Tico culture. Here are a few of the biggest festivals in Costa Rica:

Las Fiestas de Zapote

This festival, celebrated from Christmas until New Year’s Eve every year in the town of Zapote, is a week-long fiesta. It’s home to the biggest rodeo in Costa Rica, many carnival games, as well as rides and food stalls.

Palmares Fiestas

After the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s and the Zapote festival have wound down, it’s time for the Palmares festival. In mid-January, more than one million Ticos and tourists head to the town of Palmares for one of the largest festivals in Costa Rica. Revelers drink beer, enjoy food, listen to international acts and watch traditional bullfighting and the ‘tope’ – a horse parade through the streets.

Fiesta de los Diablitos

The ‘Festival of the Little Devils’ is celebrated twice each year (in December and February) in the indigenous communities of Boruca and Rey Curre. The festival celebrates the triumph of the original inhabitants over the Spanish conquistadors, with dancing and performances featuring costumes and painted masks.

Limon Carnival

If you’re traveling to Costa Rica in October, you’ll probably find yourself in the festive spirit as you touch down, as this is the month of Carnival. Notably, it’s when the Caribbean town of Puerto Limon celebrates this annual festival, with elaborate costumes, floats, parades and food stalls aplenty, spread across two weekends.

Costa Rica travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Year-round tropical warmth means there really isn’t a bad time to visit Costa Rica. December to April are normally the driest months; however, Costa Rica’s diverse topography and blanket of rainforests suggest that you should be prepared for at least some rain any time of the year – a very small price to pay for such lush surroundings.

The good news is that even during the rainiest of seasons, the rainfall tends to be limited to a couple of hours a day – just enough time for you to enjoy a cup of Costa Rica's acclaimed coffee in one of its many cafes.

The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is between December and March – the driest and hottest months along the Pacific Coast. May to October brings the most rainfall across the country, but this is dependent on the region, as the wetter seasons are extended on the Osa Peninsula and northern sections of the Caribbean Coast.

Do you need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

Generally, Costa Rica grants visas to most countries’ passport holders for a period of 90 days, providing travelers have a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and their trip is for leisure. Some countries’ citizens must apply for a visa before leaving their home country, but most do not.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information. This is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Costa Rica?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Costa Rica, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is standard practice. Many restaurants do add a service charge to the final bill which is usually a 10% gratuity; however, 500 colones (or around USD 1) of local currency is an appropriate extra amount.

What is the internet access like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's cities and tourist centers have wi-fi and internet access available in hotel lobbies and internet cafes. Internet access is less available in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Costa Rica?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Costa Rica's cities and metropolitan areas, although expect limited coverage in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Costa Rica, but, be sure to check with your service provider first to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

Costa Rica has one state-owned phone provider – Kolbi – as well as a selection of private companies, should you wish to purchase a SIM while abroad. Depending on what connection and coverage you need during your stay in Costa Rica, a prepaid option with one of these providers may be the cheapest way to go.

What are the toilets like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's toilets are a mixture of flushable and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as these aren't always provided.

What will it cost for a...?

Costa Rica's unit of currency is the colón (CRC). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Cup of coffee = 500 CRC
  • Naturales (fresh fruit drink) = 1600 CRC
  • Bottle of beer = 1100 CRC
  • Lunch at a soda (local restaurant) = 3200 CRC
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 5000-9000 CRC

Can I drink the water in Costa Rica?

Although tap water is considered safe to drink in Costa Rica's cities, it's probably a good idea to avoid drinking tap water in Costa Rica. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying small bottles of water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels provide this, so you’re able to use a reusable bottle. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Costa Rica?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels, and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash, so be sure to have a combination of both when traveling.

What is ATM access like in Costa Rica?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, come prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Costa Rica ?

  • 25 December: Christmas Day

Please note: Costa Rica public holidays may vary.

Is Costa Rica safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Generally speaking, Costa Rica is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Same-sex relationships are legal and, in 2015 Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to recognize gay relationships; however, recognition of same-sex marriage is currently pending government approval. In many places in Costa Rica, public displays of affection might attract unwanted attention, but there are a few places in Costa Rica with a thriving LBGTQI scene. Quepos has long been known as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Costa Rica, and the actual capital, San Jose, has a good number of gay bars and clubs.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What is the weather like in Costa Rica?

Being in the deep center of Central America, Costa Rica gets hot and oh so humid. However, there’s a whole number of microclimates inside its borders – that’s a fancy way of saying that the terrain is pretty hilly – so depending where you are in the country, the temperature may fluctuate. Generally speaking, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate year-round with temperatures averaging at 64°F minimum and 81°F maximum.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast has tropical heat almost all year round. March is the driest and hottest month, and May to October brings the wet season to the region. The Western Central Valley, including cities like San Jose, indirectly follow the Pacific Coast’s weather trends.

The Caribbean Coast has pretty steady rainfall all year round with no distinct dry season. September to October and February to March are considered the best months to travel to this side of the country as they are drier than most, but still experience rainfall. The Eastern Central Valley usually follows a similar weather pattern.

Is Costa Rica accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Much of Costa Rica’s travel highlights are based around the coast and in nature, so depending on travelers’ level of mobility, this may present obstacles. Many national parks are difficult to visit for travelers using a wheelchair, as jungle paths are mostly remote and not stable. Manuel Antonio does have wider paths and more accessible routes to venture into the rainforest, and the wide boardwalks and beaches are wheelchair friendly. The capital, San Jose, is a bit tricky to get around, with rough sidewalks and a lack of ramps. There are, however, taxi companies in the capital that offer wheelchair-accessible vans.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to pack for a trip to Costa Rica

AAA’s collection encompasses guided tours, and independent and inclusive vacations that cater to every type of traveler — from traditional to off-the-beaten-path. Whether traveling solo or planning a romantic getaway, you'll find numerous vacation options in Costa Rica.

Trips range from landmarks and farmlands to culture and eco-tours in cloud forests and national parks. In Costa Rica, ecotourism in particular is a popular option for nature enthusiasts seeking sustainable and accessible travel that supports local communities and conserves the environment. These usually enlist local guides and visit lesser-known destinations. However, all will introduce you to Costa Ricans' (aka Tico) hospitality and the “pura vida” (pure life) lifestyle.

As a AAA Member, you can enjoy special benefits and save even more on luxury vacations. To check availability, browse AAA’s available Costa Rica tours online . You can filter by destination, tour, operator and tour type. You’ll find vacation packages like Costa Rica: A World of Nature; Monkeys, Jungles & Volcanoes; and Tropical Costa Rica. Alternatively, you can put together the best of the best with Custom Vacation - Central and South America, where you can see more of the region, learn about new cultures and enjoy world-class service.

Although you can make arrangements in a variety of ways, we recommend reviewing available AAA Vacations® packages and working with a AAA Travel Agent to book prior to your arrival for cost efficiency and peace of mind. Having an agent will take the guesswork out of travel and introduce you to fabulous Costa Rica hotels and the country's natural beauty. Packages are subject to change; read AAA’s Terms and Conditions for complete details, including amenities, Member Benefits and restrictions.

Arenal is the hot springs and adventure capital of Costa Rica but is also one of the best places to take in natural beauty and enjoy the incredible biodiversity and nature. We always recommend staying at a hotel with onsite hot springs, but if you can't find availability, you'll likely want to spend a day at one of the resorts that offer day or evening passes. Tabacon is undoubtedly the most popular day pass hot springs option, followed by the Los Perdidos Springs at The Springs Resort, and then Baldi Hot Springs for a more economical option that is great for kids. The Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of the most popular places in Costa Rica to search for monkeys, sloths, caimans, and many other species of wildlife. You can go by motorized riverboat or on a canoe for a more intimate experience. Closer to Arenal, we offer a Safari Float on the Rio Penas Blancas. This float is a fun and memorable activity for families as you go on a whitewater rafting boat. While there are no rapids, you will be thrilled by the amazing wildlife that inhabits this biological corridor, including sloths, toucans, monkeys, iguanas, and many other animals. A hike through the Arenal Volcano National Park is a great way to spend a couple of hours in the afternoon before a visit to the hot springs. The park can be hit or miss at times but is home to many species of wildlife. Monkeys, sloths, toucans, and peccaries are commonly spotted, but you also have an off chance of seeing something incredible like an ocelot, margay, or tayra. Birdwatching can be incredible in the Arenal Volcano region. Chestnut and keel-billed toucans are common. Aracari, motmots, honeycreepers, and several species of tanagers are as well. If you want to visit a waterfall, be sure to save time for the La Fortuna Waterfalls. This gorgeous waterfall is nearly 200 feet tall and surrounded by a lush jungle. The world-famous Rio Celeste Waterfall is also a great day trip from the La Fortuna area. To access it, you hike through the Tenorio Volcano National Park until the forest opens up and you are facing one of the world's most beautiful waterfalls. The Kool-Aid blue color waters are a stunning contrast to the lush green jungle that surrounds it. insider's advice: Choose a hotel with onsite hot springs. Manuel Antonio

intro : Manuel Antonio, a tiny town set on the Pacific coast, offers stunning white sand beaches backed by palm trees and rimmed with a rainforest jungle full of wildlife. Its national park, teeming with sloths, monkeys, and parrots, to name a few, is the most visited in the country.

Manuel Antonio is the jungle-beach destination!

where to stay: Manuel Antonio is best known for its eco-friendly boutique hotels that line the hills above the beaches. Los Altos Resort is a luxurious 5-star Bali-inspired condo resort that we highly recommend! They offer various unit configurations, from 1 - 3 bedrooms. Los Altos is on a private wildlife reserve and has direct beach access at the base of the property. Arenas del Mar Resort is another excellent high-end boutique hotel, and right by the beach. This hotel offers elegant rooms and world-class services. The Tulemar Resort is a beautiful eco-friendly resort located on the hill near the center of Manuel Antonio. You would have to take the hotel's shuttle to reach the beach, but it is accessible from the resort property. This hotel is best known for its fantastic customer service, which makes it among Costa Rica's highest-rated hotels. Si Como No Resort is a beautiful 4-star eco-resort with stunning views over the jungle and gorgeous Pacific coast. The Shana Hotel is another terrific 4-star option. The Shana is set on a hillside overlooking the forest and coast, but you can walk down a nature trail to a gorgeous little beach within 10 minutes. La Vela Boutique Hotel is a wonderful 3-star option if you are looking to save money. This fun, small hotel is within just a few minutes walk from the beach, national park, shopping, and a variety of restaurants. what to do: Manuel Antonio is a jungle beach destination with loads of wildlife, gorgeous scenery, and much more! This beach offers more activity and experience options than any other in Costa Rica. A visit to Manuel Antonio National Park is practically a requirement! This fantastic park, set in the coastal jungles, is home to countless species of rare and exotic animals. You can also sign up for a wide variety of adventures in Manuel Antonio, including whitewater rafting, canyoning and rappelling down jungle waterfalls, horseback riding, ATV adventures, canopy zipline, biking, and more! Of course, you can also choose from a variety of beach activities such as surf lessons, kayaking, or even parasailing. Catamaran Cruises are another popular activity in this area. Imagine cruising along the gorgeous coast as you watch the brilliant sun setting on the Pacific.

insider's advice: Bring your towel and bathing suit when visiting Manuel Antonio National Park. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica are in the park. Plan to stick around after your tour and enjoy some fun in the sun in this incredible setting!

Tamarindo

intro: One of Costa Rica's most popular beaches, Tamarindo, invites visitors to enjoy its many surfside village restaurants, shops, and nightlife entertainment. If you're seeking an endless summer with beautiful beaches and live music, Playa Tamarindo is the place to go on your Costa Rica vacation!

Tamarindo is one of Costa Rica's most popular beach towns

why visit: beach and surfing combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Nicoya Beaches best weather: mid-November - July but many days in August are nice as well best prices: May - November

where to stay: Tamarindo is a great place to visit and offers visitors some wonderful hotels to choose from! Capitan Suizo is a beachfront boutique hotel located close enough to town to walk to restaurants but far enough to escape from the crowds. This 4-star hotel offers luxurious accommodations and remarkable customer service. Cala Luna is another higher-end 4-star boutique hotel that we highly recommend. Located in the quiet Langosta neighborhood of Tamarindo, Cala Luna offers guests 2 and 3-bedroom villas or well-appointed guest rooms. The 4-star Tamarindo Diria Resort is located in the center of Tamarindo and right in front of the beach. This hotel is more like a resort and offers adults-only or family sections of the hotel, so there's something for everyone!

what to do: Tamarindo is a fun and enjoyable town, offering a plethora of activities! Of course, beaching, swimming, boogie-boarding, and surfing are at the top of the list, but there are plenty of other things to do as well. Adventurers can go canopy ziplining, horseback riding, ATVing, kayaking, or even take a drive up to one of the adventure ranch haciendas near Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Nature lovers can go on a birdwatching tour or a riverboat safari at Palo Verde National Park.

insider's advice: Tamarindo is unique in the sense that the beach is perfect for swimming or surfing. The south end of Playa Tamarindo is calm and perfect for swimming. The north end of the beach has larger waves that are ideal for surfing. Bring your boogie board for the area in between!

Monteverde Cloud Forest

intro: The mysterious cloud-enshrouded mountains of Monteverde offer an almost magical experience as you walk the forest floor and up into the canopy on overhanging suspension bridges. Home of world-class highland species birdwatching, where birders flock to seek a glimpse of the rare Resplendent Quetzal or hear the call of the 3-Wattled Bellbird, the unique Cloud Forest also features a rich assortment of orchids and epiphytes. Thrill-seekers can choose to quench their thirst for adventure traveling at high speeds by zipline through the magnificent old-growth forest over spectacular scenery. The local village of Santa Elena provides plenty of eateries, local artisan shops, museums, and galleries.

The beauty of the Monteverde Cloud Forest is amazing!

why visit: cloud forest, nature, adventure, birdwatching combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio, Guanacaste Beaches, Nicoya Beaches best weather: December - April best prices: May - November

where to stay: For years, Monteverde has been known as the land of rustic ecolodges, but that is beginning to change. Opening its doors in 2019, Senda Monteverde Hotel offers guests a luxurious ecolodge option. This hotel is backed by a private nature reserve and offers stylish eco-friendly accommodations, but the secret is in its service. The staff at this hotel is simply wonderful and makes it one of our favorite hidden gems! We also like that they have an onsite restaurant with great prices, a nice change these days! Koora Monteverde Boutique Hotel is another great eco-friendly lodge. They also opened for business in 2019 and offer higher-end eco-lodging. Along similar lines, Hotel Belmar is a great eco-friendly lodge that offers simple but stylish accommodations. Built out of local hardwoods, the buildings are beautiful. If you want to save money for tours and experiences, we'd recommend El Establo Mountain Hotel or Hotel Poco a Poco. Both of these hotels are in the midrange category, offering affordable, but nice accommodations.

what to do: Monteverde is one of the most popular cloud forest destinations in the world, so be sure to plan to visit one of the cloud forest reserves! While Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is far and away the most recognized reserve in the region, Curi Cancha gets our vote as the best of the best! This amazing reserve is located near the other reserve but has far fewer visitors and a lot more potential for animal sightings and great birdwatching. We also recommend checking out one of the amazing canopy tours that Monteverde is famous for. The canopy ziplines in this area are among the best in the world! If you're looking for a slower-paced activity, birdwatching, and just learning about the cloud forest, we'd recommend a guided hanging bridges tour. These hikes will take you both on the ground and through the canopy of the cloud forest via hanging suspension bridges.

insider's advice: Monteverde is home to the best canopy hanging bridge tours and canopy zipline courses in Costa Rica and perhaps the world. If you are planning on enjoying one of these activities, save it for Monteverde! Birdwatchers will like to know that the best time to observe Resplendent Quetzals is during their breeding season from February through May. Three-Wattled Bell Birds breed in Monteverde from March through June.

intro: Known as the Gold Coast, Guanacaste is home to some of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica. Whether you're seeking world-class surfing, classic beach hangouts, a romantic getaway on miles of gorgeous beach, seaside horseback riding, or an all-inclusive beach resort, Guanacaste has it all. This just may be the perfect destination for your Costa Rica beach vacation!

Guanacaste is home to gorgeous beaches and amazing sunsets

why visit: beaches combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest best weather: mid-November - July but many days in August are nice as well best prices: May - November

where to stay: There are many great hotels in Guanacaste, so we'll focus on a handful that are consistently rated as the best by our clients. Guanacaste is home to the majority of Costa Rica's all-inclusive resorts. The 5-star Westin Playa Conchal is our highest recommendation as it's positioned on one of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica and has wonderful amenities. It's also just a 15-minute drive from Tamarindo, so there's plenty to do in this area. Secrets Papagayo Resort is our top recommendation for adults-only all-inclusive. This 5-star resort is also beachfront and located just 25 minutes from LIR Airport, making it one of the most conveniently located resorts in Costa Rica. In the boutique hotel category, we recommend several great options. Hotel Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar is a wonderful beachfront hotel with an amazing open-air beachfront restaurant. At just 25 minutes from the airport, it's also very convenient. Bahia del Sol is another great option if you want to go a little off-the-beaten-path, but still be within a half-hour drive of Tamarindo. This beachfront hotel is located in the quiet village of Potrero and offers luxurious eco-friendly accommodations. Be sure to check out our Tamarindo section for recommendations, including Capitan Suizo and Cala Luna.

what to do: Guanacaste offers visitors a variety of beaches, offering everything from gentle swimming to world-class big wave surfing and everything in between. Popular beach activities include kayaking, sunset catamaran cruises with snorkeling, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing. if you're an adventurer, we'd recommend taking a day trip to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. This national park and surrounding area is covered in tropical dry forest and offers great hiking opportunities. The adventure ranches surrounding the volcano offer canopy zipline, ATV riding, whitewater tubing, horseback riding, and much more, including hot springs! Nature lovers can go on a riverboat safari cruise in Palo Verde National Park or go on a guided hike in Santa Rosa National Park, in search of rare and exotic animals.

insider's advice: Northern Guanacaste from Tamarindo through Papagayo is the driest region of Costa Rica. Even in the rainiest months, September and October, many days see some sunshine.

Osa Peninsula and Corcovado

intro: One of the wildest, most remote, and rugged regions of Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula is home to the world-famous Corcovado National Park. Often unreachable except by boat or plane, this area offers an untamed, raw experience with guided tours into the remotest areas, including protected ocean reefs. Mostly ecolodges are found here, including some quite primitive, a real back-to-nature experience!

The Osa Peninsula is one of the most biologically diverse places in the world!

why visit: nature, beaches, off-the-beaten-path combines well with these destinations: Manuel Antonio, Costa Ballena, Southern Mountains, and San Gerardo de Dota best weather: December - April (some years have a mini dry season in July, known locally as El Veranillo de San Juan) best prices: May - November

where to stay: The Osa Peninsula is home to some of the world's best ecolodges. Copa del Arbol in Drake Bay offers beachfront lodging, with charming bungalows and world-class service. Surrounded by jungle and in front of a gorgeous beach, you'll have no problem setting your cellphone down for a few days of paradise! Aguila de Osa is another wonderful Drake Bay ecolodge. Known for its great food, amazing experiences, and world-class service, Aguila is a great choice for your stay in Drake Bay. Cabo Matapalo is another amazing destination on the Osa Peninsula and is home to some incredible lodges! Lapa Rios Lodge defines eco-luxury. Set on a hill overlooking the wild jungle and the Pacific coast, this amazing ecolodge offers luxurious accommodations and world-class service. El Remanso is another amazing "rustic-chic" ecolodge in this remote region. With airy and thoughtfully decorated bungalows and villas, a gorgeous swimming pool, spectacular jungle, and ocean views, and a prime location by Corcovado National Park, El Remanso is one of the best ecolodges in Costa Rica!

what to do: Corcovado National Park is one of the most biologically intense places on the planet! A guided trip to the park is practically a must to see monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws, and countless other species of exotic animals. You might even catch a glimpse of something extraordinary like a jaguar, ocelot, or tapir! Cano Island is Costa Rica's best scuba diving and snorkeling location. Located off the southwest coast of the Osa, Cano Island is a must for anybody interested in experiencing the wonders under the sea. The waters off the coast of the Osa Peninsula are home to year-round populations of dolphins, but this is also one of the best places in the world to observe humpback whales from December through March and again from August through October.

insider's advice: There are no large or luxurious resorts on the Osa Peninsula. Expect rustic but, in some cases, elegant ecolodges that cater to ecotourists. Amenities such as air-conditioning and television are rare, but then again, where else can you be entertained by sloths and Scarlett macaws by day and use howler monkeys as an alarm clock?

Nicoya Peninsula

intro: The Nicoya Peninsula offers an incredibly diverse and beautiful region of Costa Rica with miles of pristine Pacific coastline. Part of the Guanacaste province, it provides off-the-beaten-path beaches and old-world Costa Rican charm. Here you'll find a variety of beaches, secluded coves, big wave surf breaks, sea turtle nesting sites, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and the occasional all-inclusive resort.

Beautiful beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula

why visit: beaches and off-the-beaten-path combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest best weather: mid-November - July but many days in August are nice as well best prices: May - November

where to stay: The Nicoya Peninsula is a great place to go if you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path beach destination for your Costa Rica vacation! Nammbu Bungalows in Carrillo is a nice 4-star hotel, located just across the street from one of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica. Tango Mar Resort in Tambor is another great option. This beachfront hotel has a golf course, yoga studio, seaside bar, and more - essentially everything you need for a tropical escape! Hotel Nantipa in Santa Teresa offers luxurious oceanfront suites and villas, so you can explore the exotic, world-class surfing beaches of this famous surf and yoga destination.

what to do: Surfing boogie boarding, and swimming top the list of things to do on the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, but there are some other great experiences as well! Nature lovers can watch nesting sea turtles on many nights from May through November at Playa Ostional or Camaronal. A guided hike at the Cabo Blanco National Park is another great way to see animals, including monkeys, Scarlett macaws, anteaters, and many other amazing species! Kayaking and snorkeling at Isla Chora is a great way to spend the day if you are staying in the Samara or Carrillo area. There's also a wonderful day trip to Isla Tortuga available from Tambor, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa. This fun-filled day includes a boat ride to the exotic island, where you can relax on white-sand beaches and experience amazing snorkeling. Of course, many visitors to the Nicoya opt to just relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches!

insider's advice: If you are traveling to beaches on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula from Monteverde, Arenal, or points east, use the ferry from Puntarenas to cross the Gulf of Nicoya. You'll also need a 4x4, GPS, a good map, and a strong sense of adventure if you are driving your own!

Southern Caribbean

intro: Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast invites you to indulge in its reggae vibe, spicy food, and lively steel drum music for an interesting cultural experience. You'll find flat, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, surf breaks, and swaying palms amid lush rainforests ideal for surfing, snorkeling, swimming, or swinging in a hammock. Inland, you can visit indigenous farms practicing old methods of natural sustainability, visit waterfalls, hike the Talamanca mountains, and find a host of adventure activities.

The eaches of Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast are stunning!

why visit: beaches, nature, and off-the-beaten-path combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano, Tortuguero, Pacuare, Turrialba, Sarapiqui best weather: March - April, September - October best prices: May - November

where to stay: The boutique-style Hotel Aguas Claras sets the stage and defines luxury on the Southern Caribbean coast. This area is known for its rustic and unique lodges, but the Aguas Claras has changed everything! Set in front of the gorgeous Playa Chiquita and surrounded by a jungle that is teeming with wildlife, this amazing hotel is designed to deliver an authentic Caribbean experience. It is sure to be a highlight of your Costa Rica vacation! Hotel Le Cameleon is another great hotel choice for the Southern Caribbean! With its modern design, beach club, open-air restaurant and bar, and gorgeous jungle surroundings, it's easy to see why this is one of the region's most popular hotels!

what to do: The Southern Caribbean coast is home to a variety of beaches. Some are better for swimming and others are great for surfing. There is also amazing snorkeling in front of Cahuita National Park, where you can see corals and colorful fish. Cahuita National Park is also a great place to take a guided hike through the nature trails, in search of boisterous howler monkeys, cute sloths, and countless other species of animals! There's also a great hike at Gandoca Manzanillo Refuge, where you can go on a guided hike through the jungle to gorgeous white-sand hidden beaches. One of the best tour experiences is a form of transportation to or from the Caribbean coast. We offer a transfer between San Jose, Arenal Volcano, and the Southern Caribbean, with a stop for a whitewater rafting trip on the world-famous Rio Pacuare. This trip is a great opportunity to break up the long drive with something exciting and spectacular!

insider's advice: There are no large resorts or all-inclusive hotels in the Southern Caribbean region. With few exceptions, expect rustic lodges and bungalow-style accommodations with few amenities and amazing surroundings! While the southern Caribbean is best known for its beautiful beaches, the area is also home to loads of wildlife. Cahuita National Park is one of the best places in Costa Rica to observe sloths, monkeys, and other exotic animals.

intro: Inaccessible by car, the remote coastal region of Tortuguero provides a sanctuary for rare wildlife. It is also a primary nesting site for several species of endangered sea turtles. Canals wind through the jungle allowing you to observe the untouched beauty. Supporting eleven unique types of biospheres, it may be the most diverse place in Costa Rica! A small colorful village sits on an island sandwiched between the river and the Caribbean coastline. Ideal for serious nature enthusiasts!

Tortuguero is a remote destination, only accessible by boat or car.

why visit: nature and off-the-beaten-path combines well with these destinations: Arenal Volcano, Southern Caribbean, Pacuare, Turrialba, Sarapiqui best weather: March - April, September - October best prices: May - November

where to stay: Tortuguero is home to some of the best ecolodges in Costa Rica! Most of these lodges include roundtrip transportation from San Jose, including a segment on a boat! Many of the lodges also include meals and tour experiences such as a tour to the remote village for a cultural experience as well as a safari-style boat ride through the fantastic Tortuguero Canals in search of the many rare animals that inhabit this remote region. Tortuga Lodge and Gardens offers higher-end lodging and individualized service, making it one of our favorite lodges in the area. Mawamba Lodge is another excellent ecolodge option. While it is rustic, guests will love the location and incredible service!

what to do: Tortuguero is an ecotourist's paradise! Only accessible by boat or plane, the canals and parks are loaded with rare and exotic animals. Most lodges will include a riverboat safer through the canals, hiking through the jungle, and also a cultural trip to the village. From the end of July and through October, many of the lodges offer sea turtle nesting tours at night, allowing you to experience the thrill of witnessing a giant sea turtle laying her precious cargo!

insider's advice: Tortuguero is another area with very rustic lodging. Expect an authentic ecolodge experience and immersion in nature in this region! Many of Tortuguero's lodges offer packages that include transportation to and from San Jose, lodging, tours on the canals, and meals for less than it costs for a hotel stay in other areas!

Costa Ballena

intro: Costa Ballena is one of the most beautiful yet least visited regions in Costa Rica. Towering rainforest-covered mountains extend to long stretches of beautiful southern Pacific beaches, creating a spectacular contrast of gorgeous scenery and inspiring landscapes. Home of the famous Whale's Tail at Ballena National Park and world-class surfing.

Expect gorgeous beaches, towering mountains and dense jungles in Costa Ballena

why visit: nature, beaches, off-the-beaten-path combines well with these destinations: Manuel Antonio, Osa Peninsula, Southern Mountains, and San Gerardo de Dota best weather: December - April (some years have a mini dry season in July, known locally as El Veranillo de San Juan) best prices: May - November

where to stay: While you won't find any large resorts, there are some incredible independently-owned boutique-style hotels to choose from on Costa Ballena! You will find protected coasts with gorgeous natural habitats along the shores, but this also means that the hotels are located further back, in the surrounding mountains and hillsides. Oxygen Jungle Villas, Kuru Villas, and Rancho Pacifico are all fantastic and luxurious small boutique hotels, offering sweeping views, world-class services, and beautiful guestrooms and villas. Hotel Cristal Ballena is a great choice to save a little money, but still, enjoy 4-star accommodations and an amazing all-around experience.

what to do: We recommend a 4x4 SUV rental car for exploring this beautiful region, where you can walk miles on stunning beaches without seeing another soul or stop at a towering waterfall along the road! This area also offers some extraordinary organized tour experiences. Whale watching in front of Marino Ballena National Park from December through March and again from August through October is simply spectacular! Kayaking and snorkeling in the same park can be amazing during the dry season, from December through April. If you have a rental car, we recommend a visit to the Hacienda Baru Hacienda and Wildlife Refuge. Organized tours to choose from include guided nature hikes, birdwatching tours, canopy zipline, and much more. If you are up for an adventure and in good physical condition, we would recommend an overnight stay in a cave at the Diamante Rappelling Overnight Tour. This tour is one of the best experiences an adventurer can have in Costa Rica! You hike through the jungle-covered mountains up to a cave that is tucked behind a towering double waterfall. They have a rustic kitchen, sitting area, gym mats to sleep on, and a bathroom in place, and use burros to pack in food. Aside from the thrill of the hike and unique stay, you can also rappel down the waterfall. The next morning you can jump off of another waterfall into a pool below. This tour truly is a memorable experience and is sure to be the highlight of your vacation to Costa Rica!

insider's advice: If you have a rental car, be sure to drive the coastal highway to see some of Costa Rica's most beautiful landscapes! Many waterfalls can be seen cascading down mountainsides, and small turn-off beaches can be found all along the coast. Visit Playa Ventanas to see caves on the beach!

Your trip to Costa Rica opens in the colorful capital city of San Jose, the perfect place to relax and soak up the sights as your adventure begins.

Welcome to the Central Valley. Begin with a tour of a local coffee plantation highlighting the history and cultivation of this driver of the Costa Rican economy. This afternoon, check in for a leisurely 3-night stay at a lodge overlooking the majestic Arenal Volcano. Get to know the Costa Rican culture this evening.

Embark on a Cano Negro guided riverboat trip in a covered canoe known as a panga. These 20,000 acres are home to the largest viewable collection of indigenous wildlife in all of Costa Rica. Go in search of caimans, river otters, sloths, monkeys, river turtles, exotic birds and rare butterflies. Later, return to Arenal for the chance to relax during an optional spa visit.

Enjoy a delightful cruise on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica’s largest and most important lake. Then, it’s off to the secluded Monteverde Cloud Forest, a place you have to see to believe, where trees grow to heights of 100 feet! Set off on a nature walk through this spectacular ecosystem, where you’re sure to encounter many incredible species of flora and fauna.

Today we make our way to breathtaking Guanacaste, known for its fine sandy beaches. Settle in for a relaxing 2-night stay at your resort and take in the mesmerizing ocean views.

Fun in the sun is in store today as you explore the nearby beaches, or simply relax by the pool and take advantage of your resort’s lovely amenities. This afternoon, visit the delightful beach town of Samara for some local culture. Return to your hotel in time to catch a Costa Rican sunset and soak in the spectacular colors as the sun illuminates the natural landscape before your final dinner.

Today you depart for home with fabulous memories of your Costa Rican adventure.

There are so many benefits to letting someone else take on all the details that come with having The Perfect Trip. See why more and more travelers choose to Go Guided — and why they never go back.

5 Reasons to Go Guided:

Go Tour Managers!

On Day 1 of your trip, you’ll meet a friendly person who sure does know a lot about your tour and the destinations you’re visiting. This highly skilled professional is your tour manage and from the moment you meet this key player on your tour, you’ll know you’re in good hands. With their rich travel backgrounds, as well as their useful information about language, currency, and all things local, you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Go Culture!

Visiting a destination gives you a taste of the local culture. But imagine actually becoming part of that culture. Staying overnight in an Irish castle like Old-World royalty…feeling the cool waters of the Great Barrier Reef envelop you as you snorkel in its turquoise paradise…or rolling dough with an Italian chef to make the perfect pizza. It’s not just about all the iconic spots that will make for the best photos, it’s about diving into another world that makes for the best memories.

Go Product Team!

Our product experts are probably on the road right now — scoping out the best of our worldwide destinations. They go, take it all in, and find the moments they love best. Those are the moments they create for you. Those experiences and sights comprise each itinerary and make each one extra-special. Best of all, you don’t have to plan a thing. You just need to choose which itinerary best suits you.

Travel is social by nature. Guided travel is extra social. Meet a cast of characters: your fellow travelers, tour manager, driver, local guides and more. The social aspect of guided travel is one of the best parts! Many travelers on our tours have forged lasting friendships. Think of all the wonderful people waiting to meet you out in the world.

Go Worry-Free!

Your peace of mind is the most important thing to us. And that starts with our roundtrip home to airport sedan service. Forget taxis, airport fees, or public transportation. We will get you there...and back. And if for any reason you need to cancel your tour, you can do so — right up until the day before departure — and receive a full refund (thanks to our travel protection plan).

There are many ways to experience the world:

Among Collette’s worldwide collection of tours we offer a variety of guided travel choices. No matter where (or how) you want to go, Collette can take you there.

Small Groups, Big Experiences

From vibrant cities to remote villages, immerse yourself in other worlds. As part of a small group, enjoy accommodations chosen to capture the spirit of the destination, savor spectacular local cuisine, and take the time to explore on your own. Along the way Explorations sets the stage for the unexpected moments that make travel so special. With just 12-24 passengers, these are the personal adventures that today’s cultural explorers dream about.

Amazing Family Moments Included

Collette's Family tours bring travelers of all ages together to experience the world’s greatest destinations. There’s no better classroom than the world, no better education than taking a walk through history. Today’s parents — and grandparents — want to share the riches of travel with their children and grandchildren. Each tour in our family line is specially crafted with the best local experiences, iconic must-see's, family-oriented hotels and immersive cultural activities. Children ages 14 and under enjoy substantially discounted rates.

Costa Rica Quest

The trip was excellent overall. With optional activities, Gadventures designed a well-rounded tour. The Chief Executive Officer was outstanding. The only reason I gave Gadventures a four-star rating was because they charged a hefty amount for an airport transfer in a shared van, even though I was traveling alone. A couple in my group told me, though, that they only paid $44 for two, whereas I paid $40, so that is unfair. Considering that taxis typically charge $30, I had anticipated paying this amount for a private vehicle rather than having to wait for the van to fill up with other passengers at the airport. Also, the accommodation is in Monteverde, the Cipreses is less desired. Smelly with thin walls/ceiling, it was hard to rest there. Wish Gadventures can compensate for the taxi charges. I gave feedback already but no response.

Classic Costa Rica Tour

Classic Costa Rica

I recently returned from a vacation in Costa Rica and it was truly a trip of a lifetime. From the lush rainforests to the stunning beaches, Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Arenal Volcano National Park, where I hiked to the top of the volcano and was rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle. The Arenal volcano was a real highlight, it's so impressive and it's surrounded by a beautiful landscape. I also had the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the Manuel Antonio National Park, where I saw a wide variety of wildlife including monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds. The park is really beautiful and the wildlife is really diverse. The beaches in Costa Rica are simply stunning, I visited Hermosa beach, Jaco and Manuel Antonio beach, all of them are beautiful with clear water, white sand and surrounded by lush vegetation. Hermosa beach was my favorite one, it's a great spot for surfers. In addition to the natural beauty, Costa Rica also has a rich cultural heritage. I visited a coffee plantation in Tarrazu and learn about the process of making coffee. It was really interesting and I had the opportunity to taste some of the best coffee I've ever had. Overall, I highly recommend a vacation in Costa Rica to anyone looking for a mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation. The country has so much to offer and I can't wait to go back and explore more. The people are friendly, the country is safe and the weather is perfect.

Costa Rica: Ocean Waves & Sunsets

We received a good amount of free time to plan our own activities but there were a lot of opportunities to eat dinner with our group and go out after we ate together in the evening. The accomodations were hostels but they were nice hostels! I love my time spent in Costa Rica! Our guide was really great too.

Costa Rica Experience

I thoroughly enjoyed my Costa Rican tour through Intrepid! What a beautiful country with so much to see and experience. Our tour guide Liza really made this tour as great as it was. She is such a kind and patient person, and incredibly knowledgeable about all things Costa Rican! I feel like I learned so much about each thing we saw and experienced through her! Thank you Liza for making this such an awesome week! I would definitely sign up for an Intrepid tour again!

Laura was a good tour leader. She always put recommendations in the chat when we arrived at a new place. And also suggested different activities we could do. Favourite experience was probably the zip lining in monteverde, definitely very fun and memorable.

Essential Costa Rica - Package with Manuel Antonio National Park

Overall Our trip went great with only a few concerns. I had to ask for the itinerary 3 days before the trip and a temporary one was provided. But the final was presented to me at the airport upon arrival. We booked the superior hotels and they were wonderful and food was great. All the transportation worked out, but the land to boat transfer to Torteguerro was confusing. Better communication would have been helpful. The guides were all fabulous! We saw wildlife at all the parks. Our Destination Services agent was helpful. Although, there was a misunderstanding when I requested an extra day at Manuel Antonio and she booked us at San Jose instead. I also learned that the "Optional Activities" are Completely on your own--as in-- 'find you own activity and outfitter and reserve it'. Given what I know now, I would have built in 2 extra days in the schedule due to hours of long ground travel between the destinations.

Picturesque Solo Costa Rica Tour

It was a good solo travel trip. BUT plan ahead. INDUS drops you off at hotel and then you are on your own in SAN Jose. We did get a map museums were closed on MOnday. research things to do, It can be extremely helpful to start researching your destination before you travel. Find out information about the city you are traveling to along with the area you will be staying in, so you can discover which stores and restaurants will be close by, get to know your way around the neighborhood, and familiarize yourself with attractions you want to see. Your journey will go smoother if you come prepared with ideas — and it will be a fascinating experience to see them come to life! The shuttle drivers were usually on time. Sunday was a busy travel day from Manuel Antonio hotel Tabula tree back to SAN JOSE PARK INN so beware of that. bus driver was late due to traffic almost an hour.

I believe that the guide makes the experience, and our guide, German Rojas, was SUPERB!!!! From his leadership, knowledge, crowd-handling abilities to his grace and humor, he is an all-around 5-star guide! Don't lose him! I loved the itinerary, especially the wildlife watching opportunities. I personally would like maybe a little less time at Arenal volcano, with more time at either Tortuguero or Manuel Antonio, but I would definitely recommend this itinerary to friends and family!

What people love about Costa Rica Tours

Overall the tour was good. The CEO Katherine was wonderful. People in our group are very friendly. What we liked most was the beaches at Manuel Antonio National Park, Also the guided walking tour at the park to explore a variety of amazing wildlife was Great. Hot Springs in La Fortuna and Horseback riding in Monteverde were enjoyable, The amenities in the hotels could be better.
Great itinerary! We saw so much and experienced so much.
It was a fantastic experience! We saw some of the most beautiful places! It was so nice to just relax and be shuffled from one beautiful place to another! Bernie our tour guide is a fantastic man! He never stops smiling!

This is the biggest Costa Rica trip-planning mistake you can make

The overdone top-down approach to costa rica trip planning, what’s wrong with the traditional top-down approach, the innovative bottom-up approach to costa rica trip planning, what’s great about our bottom-up approach, how to get started with the bottom-up approach, in the end, it’s your choice.

You’re familiar with the saying “ Hindsight is 20/20 ” right? We all know that mistakes are obvious to pinpoint after they’ve been made, but what if there was a way to have clear vision before taking action to best avoid erring at all? Take Costa Rica trip planning, for example. We bet you’d rather return home with fewer travel regrets than fond memories, and if that’s true, you’ll want to put a considerable amount of time and energy into building an efficient Costa Rica trip plan before you travel. While our Costa Rica Itinerary articles (linked below) can help you accomplish that task, another way to steer clear of travel regret is to remain cognizant of the biggest Costa Rica trip planning mistake we see travelers make: selecting tours and activities AFTER destinations, accommodations, and transportation services.

Looking to build a custom Costa Rica itinerary? Don’t miss our related blog posts for planning tips and itinerary templates: Costa Rica Itinerary: 5 days in Costa Rica (4 nights) Costa Rica Itinerary: 8 days in Costa Rica (7 nights) Costa Rica Itinerary: 10 days in Costa Rica (9 nights) Costa Rica Itinerary: 12 days in Costa Rica (11 nights) Costa Rica Itinerary: 15 days in Costa Rica (14 nights)

If you’re scratching your head while reading the last sentence of the above paragraph, trying to understand why selecting tours and activities after destinations, accommodations, and transportation services is considered a fault, you’re not alone. Our recommendation is virtually the opposite of what other Costa Rica “resources” will tell you, and what travel agents selling any country in the world will tell you, so it’s natural to be confused. Because it’s easy for tourism companies, travel agents, tour operators, and other booking agents to help you pick cities or towns first, book hotels (and transportation services to and from those hotels) afterward, and deal with tours and activities later, hordes of travelers get funneled through that process, which we call the “top-down approach to Costa Rica trip planning.” Although that’s the most popular approach to Costa Rica trip-planning, it doesn’t always deliver time- and cost-efficient trips. To get the absolute most out of your vacation, you’re better off taking what we believe—and have spent nearly 15 years defending—is a much better approach: our self-titled “bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning”.

The top-down approach to Costa Rica trip planning is simple to understand because it’s the same approach to trip planning that’s been used for decades . Once you’ve decided which country to visit (i.e., Costa Rica), this particular approach suggests you plan your trip in the following order:

  • Select the in-country destinations you’d like to visit (e.g., San Jose, La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio).
  • Select the accommodations you’d like to stay at (e.g., Hotel Presidente in San Jose, the Tabacon Resort near La Fortuna, the Monteverde Villa Lodge in Monteverde, and Hotel San Bada in Manuel Antonio).
  • Select the transportation services you’d like to use to travel between destinations (e.g., private transfer services between San Jose and La Fortuna and La Fortuna and Monteverde, and a shared shuttle service between Monteverde and Manuel Antonio).
  • Select the tours and activities you’d like to participate in while exploring each destination (e.g., a white-water rafting tour on the Pacuare River while in La Fortuna, a horseback riding tour while in Monteverde, and a tour through the Manuel Antonio National Park while in Manuel Antonio).

Here’s a quick diagram to help you visualize the top-down approach to Costa Rica trip-planning.

trip to costa rica 2023

Here’s a list of top Costa Rica travel regrets we want to help you avoid:

  • I wish I had more time to experience Costa Rica. / I wish I had built a more time-efficient Costa Rica itinerary that provided more time to participate in tours and activities.
  • I wish I hadn’t wasted so much time traveling between destinations. / I wish I had built a more time-efficient Costa Rica itinerary that made better use of travel time between destinations.
  • I wish I had saved more money on my trip to Costa Rica. / I wish I had made better use of city-to-city transportation-inclusive tours and other complementary transportation services that would have eliminated the cost of some transportation services.

The biggest problem with the top-down approach to Costa Rica trip planning is that it binds you to specific areas of Costa Rica before you’ve determined if those areas are worth visiting. When you select destinations and accommodations early on, you significantly narrow your tour and activity selection to only those experiences that are accessible from your chosen cities/towns and hotels.

If you’re like most travelers, you’ll give yourself a set number of days/nights at each destination and then plug in tours and activities for those days later. But what if, after determining which tours and activities at each destination interest you the most, you learn that you’ve given yourself too much or too little time in one place? If you’ve already committed to accommodation and transportation service reservations, not to mention an entire Costa Rica itinerary plan, changes can be a pain, frustrating, and costly.

It can be instinctual to schedule a vacation in a way that gives you roughly the same amount of time at each destination you plan to visit. But if you do that, we bet you’ll either end up with wasted itinerary time (the product of giving yourself too much time in an area of Costa Rica that doesn’t provide enough experiences that interest you) or find yourself having to choose between two or more experiences that interest you (the product of giving yourself too little time in an area of Costa Rica that provides many experiences that interest you) , ultimately limiting your Costa Rica experience overall. Not all Costa Rica destinations are created equal, so the amount of time you should spend at each destination should vary too.

It’s also important to note that the top-down approach to Costa Rica trip planning can produce a more expensive trip , especially with respect to transportation costs. This is because opportunities to take advantage of free transportation services are often missed when tours and activities are researched late in the trip-planning process . One way to save money is to use city-to-city transportation-inclusive tours to get around Costa Rica. (To learn more about city-to-city transportation-inclusive tours, please see our related blog post: Costa Rica Tour Transportation: How To Use Tours To Travel Between Destinations .) Another way is to select accommodations that fall within tour operators’ designated pick-up and drop-off zones so you don’t get stuck having to pay extra for tour transportation to and from your hotel. (For more information about pick-up and drop-off fees please see our related blog post: Costa Rica Tour Transportation: Hotel Pick-Ups And Drop-Offs .) If you follow the top-down approach to Costa Rica trip planning, which considers tours and activities last, you may not realize the amount of tour-related monetary savings that are available to you until after you’ve already booked (and possibly paid for) transportation services and hotels.

In stark contrast to the top-down approach, our bottom-up approach recommends that you prioritize tours and activities, and plan your trip in the following order:

  • Select the tours and activities you’d like to participate in according to your interests (i.e., a white-water rafting tour on the Pacuare River, a horseback riding tour, and a tour of the Manuel Antonio National Park).
  • Determine if any of your preferred tours or activities are: a) city-to-city transportation-inclusive tours (i.e., tours that include complimentary transportation between two destinations), b) tours that include complimentary transportation to/from select accommodations (i.e., particular hotels), and/or c) tours or activities that don’t require transportation to/from select accommodations because the accommodations are within walking distance of where the tour/activity takes place. In keeping with our example, there are white-water rafting tours on the Pacuare River that include free transportation between San Jose and La Fortuna, there are horseback riding tours that include free transportation between La Fortuna and Monteverde, and there are hotels adjacent to the Manuel Antonio National Park that eliminate the need for you to pay for transportation to and from the park.
  • Select the accommodations you’d like to stay at while keeping in mind that some hotels qualify for free pick-up and drop-off services with some tours and activities and other hotels do not. In keeping with our example, there are white-water rafting tours on the Pacuare River that include a free pick-up at Hotel Presidente in San Jose and a free drop-off at the Tabacon Resort near La Fortuna, there are horseback riding tours that include a free pick-up at the Tabacon Resort near La Fortuna and a free drop-off at the Monteverde Villa Lodge in Monteverde, and Hotel San Bada in Manuel Antonio is next door (i.e., walking distance) to the Manuel Antonio National Park.
  • Select the in-country destinations you’d like to visit (e.g., San Jose, La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio). Note that when following our bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning, this decision is made for you because the tours and activities you decide to participate in determine the destinations you’ll need to visit.

In summary, the bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning flips the inverted triangle that appears in the first diagram above. In that diagram, tours and activities were the lowest priority and appeared at the bottom of the triangle. With our approach, tours and activities appear on top. Here’s a quick diagram to help you visualize the bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip-planning.

trip to costa rica 2023

Note that although the bottom-up approach recommends that you research and select tours and activities at the start of the Costa Rica trip-planning process, it does not require you to book/reserve tours and activities during the first step. Although you can certainly book tours and activities early on in the trip-planning process if you wish to lock-in availability, the purpose of step #1 (listed above) is to encourage you to consider the types of tours and activities that are available in Costa Rica (and other tour-related details discussed below, such as where tours and activities take place and approximately how much time they take) from the start of your trip-planning journey regardless of when you want to officially secure your tour and activity selection.

If you’re familiar with our blog, you probably already know that we like to push the envelope and do things differently than everyone else. That’s not because we’re dead set on being trailblazers but because we recognize that the easy, popular path isn’t always what’s best for you, the traveler. Instead, we give little weight to what everyone else is doing or saying, and we think carefully and smartly for ourselves when formulating our own recommendations. In a nutshell, here’s why we feel the bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning is best :

The bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning encourages you to prioritize tours and activities, which means you can:

  • zero-in on the best destinations for you to visit according to your unique tour and activity interests
  • determine the correct number of days/nights you should spend at each destination according to your unique tour and activity interests
  • save money by using city-to-city transportation-inclusive tours to get around, eliminating or reducing costs associated with private transfer services, shared shuttle services, domestic flights, boat rides, and/or other modes of transportation
  • save money by using complimentary hotel pick-up and drop-off services, eliminating or reducing costs associated with hotel pick-up and drop-off fees for tours

If you’ve decided to follow a bottom-up approach to Costa Rica trip planning, congrats! You obviously see trip planning as an investment in your overall travel experience, which is great. The best way to get started is to research tour and activity options in Costa Rica. These can range from guided adventure tours, like white-water rafting trips, canyoning tours, and ziplining excursions, to unguided activities such as trail walks, museum visits, and waterfall hikes. Here are a few resources to help get the ball rolling:

Browse our list of popular things to do in Costa Rica to get an idea of possble tours and activities, and to learn where in Costa Rica you can experience them: 30 Popular Things To Do In Costa Rica And Where To Do Them Costa Rica Off The Beaten Path: Where To Go And What To Do Browse other articles on our blog that pertain to other tours and activities in Costa Rica: Find Costa Rica Travel Blog articles about things to do in Costa Rica Search our sister site’s discount database for tour and activity ideas that you can filter by destination: Visit Pura Vida! eh? Inc.’s Costa Rica discount database

While you research tour and activity options in Costa Rica, keep track of the following information for each experience that interests you , if you can locate it:

  • Which city or town the experience takes place in
  • Approximately how long the experience takes to complete
  • For guided tours: the times of day when the experience is offered
  • For unguided tours: the hours of operation (i.e., the window of time when you can visit)

You can formulate a perfectly planned Costa Rica trip if you allow tour and activity details to inform your destination decisions. For example, if the tours and activities you wish to experience at destination X require a total of four full days, then give yourself four full days at destination X. Comparatively, if you only need two days to do and see all that interests you at destination Y, then limit the time you spend at destination Y to two days. Don’t forget to consider and possibly factor in time for less obvious activities like souvenir shopping, exploring town centers, relaxing at beaches, spa treatments, or other periods of downtime.

After you figure out which tours and activities you’d like to do in Costa Rica, and where and when you can do them, you can determine whether any of the tours and activities you’ve selected offer complimentary transportation, either between destinations or simply to and from hotels. If so, allow these tour and activity details to inform your transportation and accommodation decisions . For example, if one of the tours you selected includes free transportation between San Jose and La Fortuna, and you plan to spend time in these two areas of Costa Rica during your trip, book the tour, not a different transportation service (e.g., a shared shuttle service or a private transfer service), for the route. Similarly, if you’re trying to decide between hotel A and hotel B, and a tour you’re interested in includes a free pick-up and drop-off at hotel B but not hotel A, consider choosing hotel B to avoid paying unnecessary transportation fees. Our related blog posts Costa Rica Tour Transportation: How To Use Tours To Travel Between Destinations and Costa Rica Tour Transportation: Hotel Pick-Ups And Drop-Offs provide tons of information about tour-related transportation services to help you identify where complimentary transportation services are available.

You may be wondering if following our bottom-up approach is worth it, “it” referring to the extra time and effort that the approach requires you to put into the planning of your trip. If so, ask yourself this: “ Is your overall Costa Rica travel experience worth it? ” Like most projects we as humans take on in life, we only get out as much as we put in, and Costa Rica trip planning is no different. Although your trip probably won’t be a disaster if you follow the top-down approach, we argue you can build a better, more time- and cost-efficient trip that hones in on your interests and delivers more of what you actually want to experience in Costa Rica, if you follow the bottom-up approach. Squashing the potential for travel regret is that simple. 🙂

When we travel, we like the freedom to roam approach. No real plan. Just go!

Hey Secondhand Surfer!

A lot of travelers like that approach! We find that it depends entirely on the traveler; those with a limited amount of time to explore Costa Rica, specific interests in doing/seeing particular things, and/or dietary or mobility restrictions tend to prefer planning their trips in advance. The same goes for travelers on a tight budget, travelers who plan to visit during the high/peak seasons, and families with children. Other people (especially those with more time and money to spend) enjoy winging it like you mentioned. The best thing is, Costa Rica welcomes all kinds of travelers, so there’s certainly something here for everyone. 🙂

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: What to Expect Month by Month

This a tough topic. The question should really be: When is the best time for ME to visit Costa Rica? Yes, the answer depends on the individual. So while we can’t answer this question for you, we can give you some information to help you make your decision.

Dry Season vs Green Season

First things first, there are two tropical seasons in Costa Rica: dry season and green season. December through April is the dry season. May through November is the green season. The dry season is also the high season as many snow birds make their escape to the tropics, and there is less rainfall. While the high season is the most popular travel time, the green season is often a favorite among Costa Rica Experts. The green season typically experiences sunny mornings (great for morning excursions) and afternoon rain showers (perfect for a rejuvenating afternoon repose). There are many perks of traveling in rainy season like discounted hotel rates, less crowds, and more active wildlife.

Varying Climates

Keep in mind that the landscapes and climates of Costa Rica vary greatly by region. The coasts are generally warmer, and the highlands are generally cooler. As you move south along the Pacific coast, humidity levels rise. The Caribbean Coast is generally hot, humid, and rainy year-round, with a short break in September and October. Please consult a Costa Rica Expert on the general climate of your destinations of interest over your travel dates.

Monthly Rainfall & Temperature Averages for 1960-1990

For a general idea of monthly weather conditions, The World Bank Group has a great tool that shows the average monthly rainfall and temperature in Costa Rica over 20-30 year periods. Now for the monthly breakdown…

February & march, july & august, september & october.

The beginning of January is a peak travel season in Costa Rica, as crowds from the Christmas and New Year holidays linger. It is also dry season in Costa Rica, when clear skies accommodate travelers. The beginning months of dry season are particularly appealing as the landscape is still verdant from the recent green season, despite reduced rainfall.

We’re still in dry season, and the weather remains fantastic. There is generally a spike in tourist traffic over Easter and the week leading up to it. Plan ahead for travel over Presidents’ Day weekend, Spring Break, and Easter. Hotel availability is limited over these popular travel dates, and some hotels increase rates over peak travel dates. Book early.

April marks the last month of the dry season, although it can last a couple weeks longer in the arid northwest region of Guanacaste. Travelers can still enjoy clear skies, although the vegetation, particularly on the North Pacific Coast, has lost some of its vibrant green sparkle after months of little rain. April is also historically one of the hottest months of the year. If Easter falls in April, you can expect a spike in tourist traffic over the holiday. Plus, there may still be spring break travelers, so you’ll want to book your vacation well in advance.

Green Season

The start of green season in May is a much needed cool off from the intense heat of the dry season. Temperatures begin to drop as the hotel prices and number of tourists do. May is a bit of a transition month, in which the rain picks up, but not quite at the rate of later green season months.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: What to Expect Month by Month

The rain brings out the best in Costa Rica’s flora.

In June, you’ll see a small surge in tourists as the kids get let out of school and family vacations start. Everything begins to look much more green as the rain brings the rainforest to life.

It’s green season in Costa Rica, but a brief pocket of sunshine breaks up the rain in July in what locals call veranillo , or little summer. Exact veranillo days and duration vary from year to year, and may even continue into the start of August. Afternoons are rainy with typically clear mornings (perfect for morning tours). The weather is generally good, and hotel prices low. July and August are popular travel times due to less rain, family summer vacations, and active green season wildlife. Some hotels increase their prices in these months.

This is the peak of green season on the Pacific Coast, but don’t let the rain keep you away. Your opportunities for spotting wildlife are best in green season. Surfing and rafting are fantastic. Hotel availability, prices, and service are at their best. Plus, there are no crowds. You may even find you have the beach all to yourself.

Rain typically clears up on the Caribbean Coast in September & October.

On the typically rainy southern Caribbean Coast, the rain lightens up in September and October, making it a great time to visit. Talk with a Costa Rica Expert about the best destinations to visit during this time of year.

The end of November marks the start of Costa Rica’s busy season, as holidays and cold weather are a great excuse to escape. November is a bit of a bridge month, when the rain has slowed down, and the crowds begin to trickle in.

Wildlife watching: hawksbill, leatherback, green, & olive ridley sea turtles on the Pacific coast

The beginning of December is less-crowded, with difficult to predict weather. Typically, the sky clears up as the rains begin to taper off for dry season, and you can experience beautiful beach days on the Pacific Coast. In Guanacaste, the most arid region of the country, the foliage begins to turn golden. We enter peak season for travel at the end of December around the holidays. With less rain, there is more uninterrupted pool time. With that, hotel prices rise. Our advice is to book your holiday vacations well in advance to reserve the best hotel rooms and take advantage of any early bird specials.

One Final Note:

I feel compelled to state that I am not a weather girl, nor can I predict the future. I only hope to bring you information to help you choose your travel dates. The best person to decide when you should visit Costa Rica is you. If a rainy afternoon would ruin your vacation, visit in dry season. If you intend to experience the rainforest in all its green glory, the green season is a great choice.

The 16 best things to do in Costa Rica

Come to Costa Rica to discover magnificent landscapes, endless outdoor activities and creatures great and small. This smallish Central American country offers a world of adventure, from water sports to mountain hikes, and rainforest wildlife watching to cloud-forest birding.

And when you’re ready to take a break from outdoor activities, there are tree houses to sleep in, meals to relish and cities to explore. Here are the 16 best things to do in Costa Rica.

A person walks on a beach in Nosara at sunset, surfboard in hand

1. Ride the waves

Surfers in the know plan their entire vacation around the wild and wonderful waves on the Costa Rica coastlines. If you're new to Costa Rica's surf scene, this is a fantastic place to find out what it’s all about thanks to inviting warm waters, long and luscious waves and non-stop good vibes.

The most popular surf destinations include Tamarindo , Nosara and Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula; Jacó , Dominical and Pavones on the central and south Pacific; and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on the Caribbean side.

Note that any given destination has a few different surf spots, some of which are better for beginners and others that offer more challenging waves. They all enjoy a bit of a party scene, though Nosara and Santa Teresa are more laid-back.

Planning tip: Find the biggest waves on the Pacific coast from May to October (though the dry season is better for beginners). The waves are biggest on the Caribbean side from November to May.

2. Fly through the clouds in Santa Elena

There are zip-line courses all around the country – some higher or faster or longer than others – but the Santa Elena canopy tours are special.

The Costa Rica canopy craze started here, but more importantly, there’s something fantastic about soaring over the treetops with the clouds swirling all around you. Take in the misty magic of the cloud forest, supercharged with an adrenaline rush.

Planning tip : While zip-lining is on many people's Costa Rica travel list, make sure you check your operator's safety procedures before committing. It's also okay to change your mind when you're there – zip-lining isn't for everyone.

3. Raft into the Pacuare Lodge

The Pacuare Lodge is a gorgeous, luxurious facility surrounded by dense rainforest and little else. The only road in is not a road at all, but rather a river: the namesake Río Pacuare.

Here is a case where the journey rivals the destination, as you travel to the lodge by white-water rafting over Class III-IV rapids on this world-famous river.

The roar of the rapids, the spectacular scenery and the thrill of the ride make for a fantastic adventure – and you’re just getting started. Once at the lodge, you’ll enjoy sumptuous accommodations, incredibly satisfying meals, super-attentive service and a roster of activities before rafting back out again.

Planning tip: Pacuare Lodge packages include transportation to and from San José, but you can also have them deliver you anywhere on the Caribbean Coast.

4. Commune with the creatures

For wildlife watchers, there’s no better place to meet Costa Rica's fauna than the trails around Sirena station in Parque Nacional Corcovado , the area National Geographic called “the most biologically intense place on the planet.”

Here, visitors have a good chance of seeing animals (some endangered) that are rare in other parts of the country, including peccaries, tapirs, crocodiles, tiny squirrel monkeys and more. Note that the best wildlife watching happens at dawn and dusk, which necessitates an overnight stay in the park.

Easier to reach and rich with life, the regions of Río Celeste and Sarapiquí have many eco-lodges and private reserves that are also fantastic for wildlife watching.

5. Hike, swim and climb to La Leona Waterfall

This outing is more than a hike or a waterfall swim – it’s a canyoneering adventure. That’s the only way to describe this excursion down the Río Blanco in Curubandé de Liberia, which involves swimming, scrambling, spelunking, climbing and cliff jumping.

You’ll ogle three different waterfalls on the way, including a final celestial-blue beauty hidden inside a cave that's a real a stunner.

Detour: This adventure takes place just outside of Parque Nacional Volcán Rincón de la Vieja , a great destination to see volcanic activity (more on that below) and soak in hot springs.

A tiny sea turtle peeks up from its nest in the sand on a Costa Rican Beach

6. Spy on nesting sea turtles

Every few years, female sea turtles perform an ancient ritual, returning to their natal beach to lay their eggs beneath the moonlight before returning to the welcoming waters of the sea.

Elsewhere on the same beach, tortuguita (little turtle) hatchlings dig out of their nests and scurry to the sea. It’s an incredible and intimate episode to witness.

Planning tip: The timing varies, depending on the location and turtle species, but you can see this spectacle of nature in Tortuguero in the north Caribbean and at Playa Grande and Playa Ostional on the Nicoya Peninsula.

7. Splurge on a multicourse meal in the sky

San Lucas is not just a restaurant; it's a dining experience – that is, a surprise nine-course menu that's also a lesson in Costa Rican history and culture.

The food presentations are innovative, interesting and excellent overall, but the highlight is the fantastic setting in the sky. Each table occupies a private glass cube high atop a mountainside, overlooking the cloud forest and the village of Santa Elena below.

Planning tip: The San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience offers two seatings per night. If you reserve for the early one, your first course comes with a spectacular sunset.

On the Sendero Las Coladas in Arenal Volcano National Park, a tourist climbs over the rocky remnants of the southernmost lava fields from the last major eruption of the Arenal Volcano in 1968.

8. Explore an active volcano

The mountains of northern and central Costa Rica are lined up in a row of hissing, steaming, sputtering volcanoes, some of which are open for exploration.

Wander among boiling mud pots and steaming fumaroles of Volcán Rincón de la Vieja ; hike the lava flows and soak in volcanic-heated pools at Volcán Arenal ; peer into the steaming crater at Poás and leave footprints in the lava fields of Irazú.

Each experience is a little different, but all will leave you awestruck at the earth’s unbridled power.

Want some help? Let Elsewhere plan your next trip.

9. Kayak through sea caves

Along the Costa Ballena on the southern Pacific coast, Playa Ventanas is a small but spectacular palm-backed beach that has a special feature: intriguing caves in the cliffs at its north end.

At low tide, you can investigate the two caves that open onto the beach (taking care to retreat if the water starts to rise).

But if you’re up for a challenge, you can paddle a kayak along the gorgeous coastline and explore the cliffs and sea caves along the way.

Planning tip: The sea caves are only accessible in certain weather conditions, and they are often impassable during the rainy season. Book tours in Uvita.

10. See some magnificent birds

Even if you’re not a bird nerd, it’s easy to geek out about the avian life in Costa Rica. Of course, there are myriad multicolored beauties that you’ll see flitting about pretty much everywhere; then there are a few showstoppers – rare in other parts of the world but relatively easy to see in Costa Rica (if you know where to look).

Most famously, the scarlet macaw has made an incredible comeback along the Pacific coast, with sightings practically guaranteed in Parque Nacional Carara and on the Osa Peninsula.

The aptly named resplendent quetzal makes seasonal appearances in the cloud forests of Monteverde and the Dota region .

And the great green macaw – still critically endangered – is sometimes spotted in Sarapiquí and Boca Tapada. Getting a glimpse of these gorgeous creatures in the wild is an awesome and inspiring experience that might just turn you into a bona fide birder.

11. Sleep in a tree house

In the wilds of northern Costa Rica, surrounded by lush forestlands, you can indulge your inner monkey and spend the night in the treetops .

On the edge of its eponymous wildlife refuge, Maquenque Eco-Lodge has a collection of fantastic tree houses – each constructed amid the leafy canopy, 12m (39ft) off the ground and surrounded by trees.

With wide balconies, outdoor showers and screen walls, the tree houses offer complete rainforest immersion with a touch of luxury. It’s a 10-minute walk to the main lodge (or a quick buzz on the walkie-talkie, in case of emergency).

Detour: On your way to or from Boca Tapada, stop in at the restaurant Centro Familiar Cuyito to try to glimpse a pair of great green macaws nesting in a wild avocado tree on the grounds.

Small groups of people in bathing suits gathered on the rocky ground around Montezuma Falls in Costa Rica

12. Cool off under a waterfall

There’s no more exhilarating plunge than one beneath the downpour of a wild waterfall. And Costa Rica has no shortage of glorious cascades – many of which are swimmable. One fan favorite is Montezuma Waterfalls , on the outskirts of the eponymous village.

It requires a rugged hike, but the reward is a triple-tiered catarata , with a thrilling (and chilling) cliff jump from the top.

Detour: If you can’t get enough, El Chorro Waterfall is another highlight in Montezuma. It’s a long hot hike, but the cascade – which falls from a high cliff directly into the ocean – is worth the effort.

13. Discover what happens after dark

Some 70% of animals are most active at night. Take a night hike with a nature guide to find out who they are and what they’re doing in the dark.

Night tours are popular in the main rainforest destinations in Costa Rica, including La Fortuna , Sarapiquí, Río Celeste and Manuel Antonio . You’re bound to see plenty of bugs and bats, frogs and snakes, but you might also catch a glimpse of a nocturnal mammal, such as a kinkajou or a tree possum.

14. Cruise a jungle lagoon

One of the most rewarding ways to see wildlife in Costa Rica is to take a cruise through the jungly canals of Tortuguero or the wild wetlands of Caño Negro . From the comfort of your boat, you’re likely to see several species of monkeys, two- and three-toed sloths, green iguanas, striped basilisks, caimans and crocs, not to mention incredible birdlife.

15. Witness a bioluminescent bay

Some aquatic organisms contain luciferin, which reacts with oxygen to produce a sparkly light. This magical glow in the water is called bioluminescence, and it lights up the coves of Ballena Bay, near Tambor on the Nicoya Peninsula.

Bioluminescent tours depart from Santa Teresa, Montezuma or Tambor itself, giving you a chance to kayak over ethereal, illuminated waters. Remember, swimming in bioluminescent waters can cause harm to the glow bacteria.

Planning tip: Save some cash by driving yourself to Playa Pochote and booking a bioluminescence tour at Don Trino campground, where tours are far less expensive than in the larger towns.

16. Take a city break in San José

You probably came to Costa Rica for wild animals and outdoor adventure. But guess what? San José is a cool, creative capital, packed with historic architecture, unique museums and trendy cafes and clubs.

Don’t miss the Museo del Jade for its insightful exhibits about pre-Columbian cultures and the Teatro Nacional for its artistic misrepresentations of Costa Rican culture.

Best of all, Barrio Escalante has the best dining scene in the city – if not the country – so here’s your chance to dig in before heading out to the land of rice and beans.

U.S. Issues New Travel Advisory for Costa Rica

' src=

Costa Rica is a popular getaway given its close proximity to the U.S., with stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and welcoming locals.

These are just a few of the highlights of this Central American paradise.

What is normally considered to be a safe destination for travelers, Costa Rica has had an uptick in violent crime recently. As has been the landscape of world events over the past few years, what seems to be normal can change quickly.

U.S. Embassy Issues Warning

Some would say Rule #1 of traveling to a foreign country is to always be aware of your surroundings. Bad things can happen anywhere at any time, whether it’s petty pickpockets or more dangerous situations. So, it’s important to heed caution at all times. Getting too comfortable in an unfamiliar place can be a big mistake.

The U.S. government has a 4-level system to determine the outlook on safety for each country:

Level 1 – U.S. citizens should exercise normal precautions

Level 2 – U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution

Level 3 – U.S. citizens should reconsider travel plans

Level 4 – U.S. citizens should not travel

Earlier this week, the U.S. issued a Level 2 alert for Costa Rica, advising Americans to take extra precautions due to an increase in violent crime. There were no specific examples given as to what they have insider information on, but an alert like this should be taken seriously.

It was noted that most of the recent criminal activity has been taking place in the capital city of San Jose, which is home to the country’s biggest airport. San Jose is the main hub where most visitors begin their Costa Rica adventures. A recent report showed American tourists flocked to Costa Rica in droves, with more than 1.2 million visitors arriving by plane.

These are the guidelines provided by the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica:

  • Be watchful when in a public area, specifically when exiting a store or venue.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and immediately leave any area that does not feel safe.
  • Do your best not to stand out in a crowd, and it is always best not to be alone.
  • Do not be flashy – keep valuables such as electronic, jewelry, and money hidden from public view.
  • It is best to walk around at night within a group on well-lit streets. Do not walk alone at night.
  • Provide someone you trust with your contact information and let them know of your whereabouts, such as when and where you will be going.
  • When leaving your home, hotel, or vacation rental, it is advised to always keep doors and windows locked. Turn on the security system (if applicable).
  • When driving, it is advised to keep doors locked at all times. Even when doors are locked, do not keep valuables in sight, such as phones or jewelry.

The embassy always recommends its citizens enroll in STEP, a government program to inform travelers of the latest security alerts. If someone is in immediate danger, the Costa Rica emergency phone line is 911, just like the U.S.

Pushback from Costa Rica

Costa Rica relies heavily on tourism as there is so much to do for travelers to enjoy the Pura Vida lifestyle! When safety comes into question, this can damage their reputation and severely hurt their economy.

The Minister of Public Security, Jorge Torres, questions how the U.S. came to this conclusion of issuing a travel advisory. Seemingly caught in the middle of his own “irresponsible” government and his opinion of the embassy’s unjust travel advisory, he did admit there truly is an increase in violent crime. While the U.S. did not provide specifics, Mr. Torres believes drug wars between gangs are mostly to blame.

At present time, there is no update on what the plan is to alleviate this problem. Costa Rica has acknowledged the surge in violence but may be in the damage control stage until a better strategy is formed. Step one might be to start tapping into the hefty funds the U.S. donated just last month to assist in keeping people safe. Costa Rica may very well be seeing some uptick in petty crime — purse snatching and car break ins. That I’m not sure of but may be. But rest assured, Costa Rica is FAR more safe for Americans that their own country in most of it places. Guns are not rampant and Costa Ricans live a comfortable if not lavish life style. It’s a great place to live and to visit. Whatever the travel advisory is about is far from daily life for most people.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Costa Rica, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Costa Rica. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Costa Rica include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Costa Rica’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Costa Rica may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Costa Rica, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Helpful Resources

Road Safety Overseas (Information from the US Department of State): Includes tips on driving in other countries, International Driving Permits, auto insurance, and other resources.

The Association for International Road Travel has country-specific Road Travel Reports available for most countries for a minimal fee.

For information traffic safety and road conditions in Costa Rica, see Travel and Transportation on US Department of State's country-specific information for Costa Rica .

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Costa Rica for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

If you have an elaborate itinerary that requires multiple layovers, try booking each leg separately as opposed to jumping on the first option that airlines generate. With this strategy, you might hop on a flight on one airline to a larger airport, and then fly out on a different airline to your final destination. Be sure to allow ample time in between flights in case of delays or other unforeseen circumstances.
