Acronym for all terrain bike.

Trek's exclusive fork design.

A tube having different wall thicknesses along its length, while its diameter remains constant.

Low alloy steel with a medium carbon content, that gets its name from the primary alloying elements, chromium and molybendium. It has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is considerably stronger, harder more durable than mild carbon steel.

Trek's exclusive fork design using taper gauge tubing and provides a blade with more elasticity for better shock absoption.

The thickness of the tube at both ends is thicker than in the centre.

Shifting system, where part of the handlebar grip rotates back and forth, clicking into each gear.

Low alloy steel that can withstand significant stress before breaking or becoming deformed. The term 'tensile' refers to the amount of stress a material can endure before failing.

Steel tubing connected with socket-like sleeves, called lugs.

Shimano's multi-condition brake system with specialized shoes, levers and cables designed for enhanced stopping power in rain, mud and snow.

A house brand for Trek during the 80s and early 90s.

Brake lever system that lets riders adjust braking power modulation.

Shimano Integrated Shifting. Shift mechanism indents control cable advance for quick, precise gear changes without over-shifting.

Shimano Linear Response. Friction reducing levers, cables and calipers.

Japanese steel tubing manufacturer for bicycle frames.

A tube having a maller diameter at one end and a larger diameter on the other end.

Tungsten Inert Gas welding is an arc welding process that produces the weld with a non-consumable tungsten electrode.

Trek-designed components. The higher the number ona given component, the higher its performance level.

Three different wall thicknesses along the length.

American tubing manufacturer.

History and Iconic Models

Trek started out in 1975 by providing only frames. In 1976 they would supply entire bicycles.

For many people Trek is most famous for sponsoring Lance Armstrong’s U.S. Postal team during the late 90’s up to his retirement.

Trek 5000 1989

But Trek already pioneered the use of carbon fiber in 1989 with the Trek 5000.

Trek Y Foil 1998

It would result in the short-lived but daring design of the Y-Foil, introduced in 1998. One of the few bikes that is designated with something more than just a number.

Trek 850 1983

They were also early adopters of the mountain bike craze, with the Trek 850 launched in 1983.

Trek Y22 1995

Their early foray in using carbon fiber would be later used with the introduction of the iconic Y33 and Y22 models. Mountain bikes with a monocoque carbon fiber frame. Although it used the suspension technique URT ( unified rear triangle ) which would turn out to be rubbish, the original design was considered iconic.

Trek 950: Restoring Mountain Bikes from the 1990s

Some links may include affiliate opportunities.

Mountain bikes from the 1990s were amazing. For many of us, these were our first real bikes so there’s a sense of nostalgia that comes with these wonderful machines.

I love this bike and it’s always a work in progress. 2021 updates are over here .

Steel is real. The fact that these bikes are made of steel means they last and there are still tons of these bikes around that still have much life in them.

My favorite of all 1990s mountain bikes is the Trek 900 series. My dad owned this bike when I was a kid and I would take it out at any opportunity. The bike was amazing and still sits in my memory as something spectacular.

Build Kit for this 1990 Trek 950

Drivetrain:.

  • Truvativ Power spline Bottom Bracket
  • SRAM SX Power Spline Crankset
  • Sram 9 Speed Chain
  • Microshift 9 Speed Thumb Shifter (Initially I did run a 3x, but then I switch to a 1x and removed the front shifter)
  • Cassette. I was able to modify a 9 speed cassette down to 8 speed and this fit on the original 7 speed hub. Doing this allowed me to use the 9 speed shifter. If you stick with the 7 speed, you’ll want to adjust accordingly.
  • Tektro Cantilever Brakes
  • Short Pull Brake Levers
  • Cables and housing

Other Parts I’ve Added

  • Mone Meal Replacement Bar
  • Brooks B67 Saddle

Finding a Bike for Restoration

If you keep your eyes on Craigslist or Ebay, there are many opportunities to find a bike for restoration. I found this bike on Craigslist.

It’s a 1990 Trek 950. Size 21 inches.

Original owner had it listed. She’d ridden it for many years, then it was left in her garage. Still had original tires on it!!

trek mountain bike 1997

The one downside for me with this bike is the shock. I didn’t feel like rebuilding one or adding a new one. I wanted to go back to fully rigid, however, where in the world would I match the purple.

This bike is in decent shape, but I had plans to powder coat black and start over.

trek mountain bike 1997

Step 1: Removing Everything From Your Bike

My first step was to remove everything.

trek mountain bike 1997

Step 2: Powder Coat the Frame and Buy a Fork

I was able to find a powder coating shop near by that did the project for $125. What a deal. Results were impressive.

trek mountain bike 1997

Step 3: Clean Up Bike Components

A lot of dirt on these suckers after almost 30 years of riding. I replaced the chain rings just to give it a nicer look. Also, polished up the crank.

trek mountain bike 1997

Step 4: Replace Components that Need Replacing

The most fun part of bike projects is figuring out which pieces require which size components. What’s going to fit, what can you get. How do you want this project to turn out?

On of the big changes I made was converting from the threaded fork / headset to threadless. This allowed for new fork, handlebars, stem.

I also moved over to microshift friction shifters.

trek mountain bike 1997

Any projects you have in mind?

Let me know, would love to hear about it.

Trek 1999 Y3 Full Suspension Bike

trek mountain bike 1997

1999 Trek Y3, mountain bike, front & rear suspension, Mountain Mix components, Rock Shox Jett C, 1.8" travel fork

  • USER REVIEWS

I bought a used one off Craigslist its incredible The pedals are metal, infact the metal all around feels so high quality its like super heavy duty. I like how its portable - i can stack it on its seat and back wheel in my apt extremely convenient. The suspension is so smooth for rough city streets and transferring to sidewalk is amazing. The shimano all metal breaks are incredible and the clicker shifters shift smooth. I also like how the frame is skinny looking down. No complaints at all.

If any weakness, the paint chips off, but the person i bought it from wrapped with blue electric tape so it actually looks cool (imgur picture of the bike i bought for 120 bucks): https://imgur.com/a/2hLWEHc

Had mine 20+ years. Built like a tank. Full suspension and very comfy, no mods or repairs at all except I fitted Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres to cut down on punctures and get a quieter road ride and fitted a slightly softer saddle and an extension stem to sit a bit more upright . This isn't the mud lovers Valhalla but if you want a sturdy reliable all rounder look no further.

A bit heavy by modern standards but then, so am I.

this bike has not let me down

i have changed the forks

i want rid of my trusty y3 but dont no were to sell it any one got any ideas

Frame strength and design. I have pounded the hell out of this thing and I couldn't break it.

Stock fork, shock, cassett, and brakes. It would be better to just buy the frame.

I got this bike because a friend of mine wanted one of my boards but he didn't have any cash so I took the Y3 in trade. When I first got it I hated the thing. I am 6'2" and weigh 210. The suspension couldn't handle it. I did everything I could to trash it but the FN thing wouldn't break. I took it to a skate park and rode it on the half-pipe (not recommended), I rode it (more like tumbled with it) down Diamond Head, and all that broke was my helmet (compliments of the half-pipe). After a few months I decided to put some money into it and see if it had any real potential. I reequipped it with Hayes disks, Fox rear shock, Manitou fork, Shimano XTR cassette, and a bunch of other goodies. I must say, you put about $4,000 into the Y3 and you will have a damn good MB/DHB.

good frame,

shock!!! pedals and bars were the only problem

This is agreat bike if you are willing to put money into improving some of the components. the only real problems i had were falty tubes and the pedals but they were replaced instantly the rock shox pyslo is Nuts i go of 5-8 footdrops and they just don't bottom out. The one time the did i nose dived of a ten foot gap i had built. Buy this bike if you don't care about wieght the xc people who had test this bike had to be nuts it is definentily not lite and the bobbing makes it very non xc able

The frame is the best strength of the bike

front and rear shock, all components

I had this bike for 9 years and changed everything on the bike. I have a new cannondale but I prefer to ride my y3. I get compliments all the time on this bike I guess becuase it looks like an Italian bike because the frame is red, tires are green, seat is white. This bike kicks ass

worst fork on the face of the earth....

For the price, it's an incredible bike except for the front fork. It is terrible. When you buy this bike, expect to add on $150-300 to the price for a decent front fork. Other than that, its good. The frame is wicked strong and can handle a lot. So it starts with 5 chilis but -1 for the fork.

Good price for an entry-level FS

stock components

Bought it used for a decent price last year, but cashed in on the upgrades. I ordered about another $400 in parts from a very popular mail order place (not to be named here). To make a long story short, they screwed up the order (like they so reliably do) but this time in my favor. I got the whole shipment/upgrade for free. I've been riding the bike for two seasons now and its been awesome. I tossed the stock parts immediately. With the changes, I've had no complaints yet except for the XT cassette that is as durable as a turd. Next year I want to upgrade the shocks... maybe I can cut another deal. :) I'm sure there are better, more energy efficient fs frames out there. But I find as long as I keep my butt on the seat, there really is no bobbing or energy loss. I recommend the bike to those who are looking to get into the fs scene. It's not worth the msrp, but used it can be a good deal.

I-drive tested

Weight strength and true Y frame ... not to mention price

Great bike... Got mine on closeout sale ... 725 with spins... so i can't complain ... I was disappoiunted in the parts ... Not that great... but for the money i paid... it was cheap ... I would recomend to anyone who wants a bike to upgrade that wants to look cool at the same time... and for all you posers who only ride on the road... get a freaking road bike ... you pretty little buggers ... and for those who want to look good and have a bike that can take a beating too ... get this one.but be prepared to upgrade front shock and drivetrain ... have fun... and for those looking for hardtails... i would reccomend a c'dale F400 ... best bet

Vrx200, C'dale super v

1997 Trek Y-22

trek mountain bike 1997

  • Add to quote

I'm not sure where this should be posted, so I'll post it here. As I said in my greetings post, I had my 1997 White Trek Y-22 stolen. I have decided that I want it back more then ever now. I have been searching Ebay, but the only one to match exactly what I want (White Frame and Fox Alps-5 Shock is all I care about, but complete bikes are fine too) is a size Small, and I of course need a Medium. My questions are; Where would be a good place to keep my eyes open for said bike? What would the ballpark $$$ be for such an old and completely outdated frame? Considering that the bike doesn't seem to have alot of fans, and can't really hold a candle to todays FS bikes. Any help and or advise is greatly appretiated.

trek mountain bike 1997

I have a 99 large yellow Y-33 with a stratos pro shock. frame only. I don't really want to get rid of it though. Just how bad to you want it?

Sorry, I guess I need to clearify. I am in search of a 1997 MEDIUM White (Red Lettering) Y-22. The reason I want this peticular one, is that it's a direct replacement for the one stolen. If I was going to get anything different, I would just buy an 06 FS bike.

trek mountain bike 1997

If only you had posted this yesterday. I just got rid of that very same bike. I stole it from some hoser, then sold it to a Guatemalan day-laborer for 35 pesos. I would have given it to you for 30 pesos. Sorry eh.

TREK 4 Life said: I'm not sure where this should be posted, so I'll post it here. Click to expand...

My first question to you would be have you ever ridden a Y frame? Contrary to it being perceived as a bad climber, I think it is one of the best climbing bikes I have ever ridden. Click to expand...

Ok thanks to those who actually had useful comments. I'll just keep lookin. I never had a problem climbing on mine. New designs might be better, but they aren't my Y Bike, so I'm not interested. As for the canadian basher. You truly are the biggest flammer ever. You definetly need to stay in school kiddo, cause your intellect is severly lacking. I mean, why bother posting if your post has nothing useful or even intelligent to offer the topic? If your bored, get away from your computer and ride. I am totally relaxed, but I will stand against anyone who makes it their soul pupose in life to insult and ridicule others for their own enjoyment. You can also try... Looking at the local flea markets, your local www.craigslist.org , and other classifieds... maybe even pawn shops. Usually, the folks who steal bikes are the kind of folks looking to sell it for quick money to shoot in their arms, or a rock to smoke or whatever. That said, I agree. The world has move on from URTs. I wouldn't blow a lot of resources to get another.

Here's a crook! This guy claims the bike is new, when they stopped making it years ago, and he also claims it has an MSRP of $3300.00 when in fact the price of the bike new way back when was about $1200 or $1400. http://cgi.ebay.com/Trek-Y-11-OCLV-...ryZ98083QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I had a roommate that had an Ibis URT bike. It was really cool looking, but I didn't think it rode particularly well. It sucked going up rocky hills (felt locked out) and it bottomed out going down hills. It's amazing how completely URT has disappeared off the landscape. If it had any design merit you'd think it would still be around in some form. I do like the concept of single pivot bikes, though.

Thanks Brian. Ya I am watching the Y-22. If the price stays in that range I'm gunna pick it up. I got a good laugh out of the guy selling the Y-11. He may mean that the bike was never ridden however. The $3300 is a joke though.

I definitely think Trek deserves to be commended for trying to be innovative. At least in reflection. Whether it worked or not, URT was a unique design that sort of went outside of anything done before. It seems like really revolutionary ideas are far and few in between and everything is just fine tuning.
