Is The Trek 7000 A Good Mountain Bike? [REVIEW]

Table of Contents

The Trek 7000 mountain bike, which was introduced in 1991, is not a particularly modern mountain bike.

Trek 7000

It is, however, one of the better entry-level mountain bikes available. The medium price tag, combined with the ability to climb and descend some easy hills, has made it a favorite among mountain bikers.

Hello and welcome to the Best Bike Select blog. This post discusses the main features of the Trek 7000 mountain bike, what we like and dislike about it, as well as a comparison with some of the bikes currently available, which we hope will assist you in selecting the right mountain bike.

Because time is running out, let’s get started.

Features of Trek 7000 mountain bike

Aluminum frame (4.5/5).

Trek 7000 hybrid

The frame of the 1991 Trek 7000 is made of Easton 7129 E9 tapered aluminum tubing. Alpha ZX aluminum was used in the latest version of Trek 7000 in 2000.

The frame’s quality has greatly improved. Because the aluminum frame will become weak and even break after more than 5 years of use.

And the Alpha ZX aluminum frame patches on the solution to this problem, extending its life beyond ten years and allowing it to stay with you for longer if it is not a regular rough ride.

The steeper 71° head tube angle is ideal for climbing and, on steeper trails, not only brings out but improves on the benefits of a hardtail mountain bike. However, some skill is required on steep downhill trails. However, all of these are relegated to technical riding.

The Trek 7000 should be considered for its intended use, which is to ride on smaller hills with greater ease. And the frame weight is extremely light at 25.16 pounds, which is comparable to some of the current light trail mountain bikes.

Front Fork (4.2/5)

Trek 7000 multitrack

Aluminum and magnesium forks are more common in low and mid-range mountain bikes these days, which is why they are lighter. With a travel of 80mm (3.15″), this is still a good entry-level mountain bike.

The stock fork also includes a retractable dust cover to keep it clean. This is something that is difficult to notice on new mountain bikes. Perhaps the more active magnesium metal used in the fork makes it more corrosive.

The fork-linked front wheel lacks a quick release, and the barrel-axle front wheel lacks ease of installation, but I really like it. It has the potential to improve the ride’s stability. Perhaps this is why I prefer older mountain bikes as well.

Drivetrain (4.1/5)

Trek 7000 Drivetrain

The Trek 7000 from 1991 has a 3X7 drivetrain. The 2000 Trek 7000, on the other hand, has been upgraded to 3X9. More gears equals a greater range of shifting. It’s not just for mountain biking.

The smallest rear gear is an 11-tooth pinion, and the flywheel’s 22-tooth gears work in tandem, making it ideal for steep hills, and the ride is fast thanks to a 2x transmission ratio.

Alloy cable pull brake (3.5/5)

Trek 7000

I’m not a fan of this type of brake, but I understand that it’s a 20-year-old design. After puddle riding, the Trek 7000’s brakes increase the braking distance. Large downhill brakes necessitate more braking force.

The power provided by your hands determines the effectiveness of your braking. It’s not very convenient, but the construction is low-cost and the braking effect is adequate.

It is still recommended that you upgrade to disc brakes, which does not come cheap, but the improved riding experience is well worth it.

Tires (4.5/5)

The width of the front and rear tires on the Trek 7000 differs slightly, front: 26 x 2.10″ Bontrager Jones AC, rear: 26 x 2.00″ Bontrager Jones AC, because the front tires provide enough grip during descents with the brakes.

Furthermore, the rear tire must provide adequate grip during normal riding or climbing. As a result, it’s an unusual but effective combination.

Commuters will appreciate the versatility of the 26″ tires, which are ideal for crowded streets or small, constantly changing terrain.

ICON Onyx handlebars (4.5/5)

Trek 7000-ON Onyx handlebars

Despite the fact that Trek is primarily using Bontrager alloy handlebars, the quality of the Trek 7000 handlebars is not bad.

Ergonomic design and a comfortable grip. It also employs different handlebar lengths and frame sizes to accommodate the differences between men and women.

Saddle (4.3/5)

The Trek 7000 was first used with the Trek System 2 saddle. The Bontrager FS 2000 was also used in the Trek 7000 in the year 2000. In some forums and reviews, neither saddle has received many complaints. The Bontrager FS 2000 saddle is more durable.

Comparison table

Trek x-caliber 8 mountain bike vs trek 7000.

trek 7000 review

The new Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike outperforms the Trek 7000 in so many ways that it’s not just a good mountain bike, but also a more advanced commuter bike.

Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, 100mm travel RockShox Judy SL Fork, 29×2.35″ (XS, S, 27.5×2.35″), 1X12 speed drivetrain, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc are included. All of these improvements add up to a selling price of around $1500.

The X-Caliber 8 is ideal for long rides because it was designed specifically for off-road use. It is all about losing weight. Despite weighing 3 pounds more than the Trek 7000, However, the design of the front fork compensates for this.

The Judy SL 100mm shock fork from RockShox features a TurnKey locking mechanism and a lighter, more adjustable air spring rather than a coil spring.

If you believe these accessories cannot be upgraded, please let us know. No, it isn’t flawless. The tires can be upgraded to a whopping 2.8″ wide for even more grip, propelling the bike forward with each pedal stroke like a throttle click.

The original fork has a travel of 100mm. It is upgradeable to a maximum of 120mm. This makes intense riding a lot more enjoyable. The Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike is a great mountain bike to try out if you like to ride long distances.

Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike vs Trek 7000

Trek Marlin 7

The Trek Marlin 7 is very stylish, and I really like the Marigold to Radioactive Red Fade. Besides the great paint color, the Trek Marlin 7 also has a clean, crisp internal alignment.

The relaxed head tube angle and comfortable ride are also the main features of the Trek Marlin 7. The same aluminum frame as the Trek 7000 is used. But the body weight is going to be about 4 lbs. in the middle. Not a very excessive weight change.

According to the official website, the Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike is a model that can compete with their high-end race bikes. Taking a closer look at its configuration, the 1X10 drivetrain, which is not very broad but crosses the line into a race model, can be interpreted as a popular version of the 3X10 Trek 7000.

The mid-range configuration of the RockShox Judy, the entry-level model for trail riding, is also consistent with the width of the Trek 7000’s tires in the 2.2-inch model.

However, the brakes are a good buy, with hydraulic disc brakes comparable to Trek’s sub-$3,000 mountain bikes. The Trek Marlin 7 is an excellent replacement for the Trek 7000, and if you like the Trek 7000, the Trek Marlin 7 will be its heir.

SANTA CRUZ Bronson Carbon R Mountain Bike vs Trek 7000

trek 7000 review

The SANTA CRUZ Bronson is a high-end race mountain bike, but there is a difference between the front and rear tires of the Trek 7000: [front] 29 x 2.5 inches, [rear] 27.5 x 2.4 inches.

This 150mm travel trail bike has stable geometry and a 29in front wheel that helps us plow through bomb holes and stay upright over drops, while the 27.5in rear wheel allows for quick cornering and precise split-second moves. rolls, sharp cornering turns, and more.

So it’s a super agile mountain bike with extremely loose geometry that can handle difficult climbs with ease. So you prefer faster and more agile trail riding? Try out the SANTA CRUZ Bronson Carbon R Mountain Bike.

Schwinn High Timber vs Trek 7000

Schwinn High Timber Mountain Bike

If the Schwinn High Timber raced the Trek 7000 in the woods, it’s safe to say that the Schwinn High Timber would lose. The Schwinn High Timber mountain bike is preferred by commuters and casual riders because it is designed for trails and community riding.

Get back to what you thought you were doing when you first bought your mountain bike and abandon the intense mountain riding. If the Trek 7000 mountain bike had a V8 engine, it would be a V8 engine.

And, because the Schwinn High Timber has a V6, can it be ridden in the mountains? Would it have the same feel as a Trek 7000? No, not at all. As a result, your budget is constrained, and you can choose the Schwinn High Timber based on its accessories.

As a result, the Schwinn High Timber is the ideal mountain bike for commuters.

Final Verdict (4.1/5)

After 5 hours of consulting forums and related reviews, the Trek 7000’s early configuration is equivalent to a high-end version of today’s low-cost mountain bikes. I also like this mountain bike. The initial price is less than $1000, and the 2000 Trek 7000 is $1019.99.

The price is thought to be sufficient to purchase a mid-range configuration mountain bike. As a result, it’s a pleasant ride on simple woodland singletrack and commuter roads. As a result, we gave this mountain bike a 4.1 rating.

Best bike i've ever owned.

This is the first "nice" bike I've ever owned and it is wonderful! I use my bike mostly for recreational biking but I can tell this bike would be great for more experienced bikers who go on long biking trips. It was easy to assemble and lightweight for easy transporting it. The breaking system is incredible and the gears change with such ease. VERY happy with my bike. It makes biking so enjoyable to have a quality bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone! I think the money you spend on this bike is well worth it. It's a bike that will probably last me the rest of my life....unless I want a new one just for fun! GREAT bike!

The Trek hybrid is a great choice for everyone

I purchased the Trek Hybrid after having my previous Trek bike stolen. It was a great choice. It is relaxing to ride in town or along wooded paths. I have had some minor problems with damage to my bike but it was easily repaired at the dealer at no cost to me. I have had it in for regular maintanance but it has really been a pleasure to own. My father-in-law has borrowed it and wishes that he had purchased the same model. He has agreed it is a great ride and makes it relaxing and enjoyable. I go on average 16 miles a week and if I had the time would go more often. I would recomend this bike to anyone. Since I purchased it I know 2 people who have gone out and done the same thing. My Father-in-law wil be purchasing one soon and I am hoping to get my wife involved also. This bike is slim and lightweight easy to manuever and a great ride. It is I would say priced mid line. It is worth the money to upgrade to a Trek over the average brand names.

Trek 7000 - good first bike?

  • Add to quote

Hi, this is my first post on these forums but I am no stranger to forums in general. Little intro: I'm 21 years old and live in howard county, maryland. I'm a college student applying to medical school this summer. I'm looking to get into mountain biking as something that I may enjoy enough to keep doing for years to come. I have the opportunity to buy a Trek 7000, the guy is unsure of what year it is but it's probably around an 05 or so. Does this seem like it would be a good first bike? If mountain biking is something I really enjoy then I will almost certainly buy a more expensive bike later but for now I would like to stick to a cheaper bike without resorting to walmart/target quality bikes that won't stand the test of time Thanks!

I tried to research the 7000 model and it would seem that they are a bit older than the guy is saying so I would pass on it...you can do better...

trek 7000 review

The 7000 is more like a hybrid (cross between a mountain bike and a road bike). It would be OK for non-technical dirt path, gravel roads, and stuff like that. As soon as you get it out onto more technical terrain, it will be more difficult to control than a pure mountain bike. The 7000 has 700c rims and 35c tires. Those are road bike rims with tires that are a little larger than regular straight up road bike tires and they generally have some very small knobby tread pattern so they aren't totally slick. If your primary interest is to go trail riding, I would not choose that bike for you. It's a good bike for riding back and forth to class in a more relaxed, upright riding position with tires that have a more utilitarian tire tread than a traditional road bike.

What's your budget? In any case, I'd say get on CL and with some help from friends already into mtbs or by asking on here, you'd probably be able to zero in on a decent entry-level ride at a good price.

Demo, demo, demo. Try out some bikes and, in particularly, go a demo day at your local trail if possible. Around here (Atlanta) there are demo days about once a month - Trek, Specialized, Santa Cruz, Niner, Pivot, etc. Sure, you can't afford those bikes right now but taking a bike for a 30-min spin on a trail will tell you a LOT about sizing, brakes, suspension, tires - the works. Hook up with your local MTB forum or message board and get feedback about who/what/where is popular in your area. On your budget, you'll overpay big-time buying from a LBS for an entry level bike. I'd look for a sale at Performance Bicycle (4 stores in MD), go BikesDirect.com or just shop used.

i had a 2000-ish 7000....it was yellow and a pure xc bike. it was really nice for the price i paid (used for $300...had barely been riden by my friend who bought it for college and was too lazy to ride it ever) i still actually have the frame and most of hte SLX group sitting in the basement...i stole parts off for a build a few years ago and never touched it again, might go put it together

Well I went to the shop today and ended up getting a giant roam1! It's a 29er and very nice, look forward to taking it on trails soon once this bad weather passes.

If you get accepted to medical school, you're going to borrow over $100,000. As long as you go into a specialty that does procedures, you're going to make more than that in a year after you finish your residency. My brother thought it was okay to do some ski vacations in Argentina on med. school loans and a little money he made doing a research year. How soon do you know if you've been accepted? $400-$700 is not much on a retail bike. It can go pretty far on a used bike, though.

jeffj said: Well, I wouldn't call every bike that uses a 700c rim a 29er. It's usually the added sidewall height of the 29er tires that gets the wheel closer to actually being 29" in diameter. So, while all 29ers use 700c rims, all bikes with 700c rims are not necesarily 29ers. The tires of the Giant Roam are 40c and the tires on the Trek 7000c are 38c. That very close to the same size. Kind of a flatbar cyclocross bike with disc brakes, or a hybrid of sorts However it is classified isn't terribly important. What is important, is that it works out well for your purposes. It looks like a fun bike to ride. Click to expand...

I think there's a little more to a mountain bike than the tires. I also wouldn't be comfortable blowing a lot on a bike until getting an acceptance somewhere. So you might be best off taking what you can afford to spend and getting a used purpose-built mountain bikes. If you find you really like it, when you start at medical school, if you're somewhere mountain biking is feasible, you can throw some slicks on the cheap one and use it to get around town, while keeping the nice one set up for athletic riding. Then you won't have to swap a bunch of equipment around all the time.

Frame and fork.

When it comes to biking, having a sturdy and reliable frame is key. This is no surprise since the frame is the backbone of the bike and can make a huge difference in terms of stability and control while you’re riding.

For the Trek 7200, you get a solid hybrid bike frame. This bike is made with Trek’s Alpha aluminum, which is known for its lightweight and durability. You’ll feel the difference as soon as you start pedaling, it’s that light!

trek 7000 review

What’s really cool about the Trek 7200 is its slightly steeper head tube angle of 71.5°. This makes it perfect for climbing hills and gives riders more confidence and balance on fast descents. You’ll be able to handle any terrain with ease!

And for the fork, the Trek 7200 is equipped with an RST CT-COM C5 fork with 50 mm of travel. For a hybrid bike like this, that’s more than enough.

While suspension isn’t usually a top priority for hybrid bikes, the suspension on the Trek 7200 is designed to absorb the bumps of trails and potholes with ease.

Finally, let’s not forget about comfort! As a hybrid bike, the main focus of the Trek 7200 is on providing comfortable rides.

You’ll appreciate the suspension and enjoy smooth rides even on rough terrain, and you’ll feel like you’re gliding on air on paved roads and smooth city streets.

Gears and Brakes

Gears are one of the most important components of any bike, as they can make a huge difference in how easy or difficult it is to ride.

Luckily, the Trek 7200 has got you covered with high-quality components from Shimano, SRAM, and Bontrager. These components provide precise shifting and braking, making for smooth and safe rides.

One of the best things about the Trek 7200 is its 8-speed rear gear. This provides a wide gear range that’s perfect for both commuting, riding around your neighborhood or even taking on rough trails.

trek 7000 review

You’ll always have the perfect gear to make the ride easy and enjoyable, whether on climbs or descents.

If you’re looking at an earlier model of the Trek 7200, you might find it fitted with 7-speed SRAM MRX Plus shifters and Shimano C102 front derailleur and Shimano Acera rear derailleur.

But in the later 2010 model, these components were upgraded to SRAM MRX Comp twist shifters, Shimano M191 front derailleur, and Shimano Alivio rear derailleur.

Either way, you can be sure you’re getting top-notch components that will give you efficient rides.

Now, let’s talk about the brakes. The Trek 7200 comes with Tektro linear-pull alloy brakes. These brakes are powerful and efficient, giving you the stopping power you need to stay safe on any ride. You’ll be able to stop quickly and easily, even when you’re gliding down a steep hill.

Wheels and Tires

Wheels and tires are crucial components of any bike, as they contribute to its overall performance and riding experience.

The Trek 7200 comes with a high-quality set of wheels, including an alloy front hub and a Shimano RM30 rear hub.

The Bontrager 750 rims have 32 holes and are more than strong enough for most commuters. These wheels are both durable and lightweight, and won’t weigh you down.

trek 7000 review

Trek 7200 has very solid tires, but depending on which model of the Trek 7200 you have, you may be riding on different tires.

The earlier models were equipped with Bontrager Invert Puncture Resistant tires, while the later 2010 model has 700x35c Bontrager H2 Plus tires with a puncture-resistant belt.

No matter which tires you have, you can expect good traction on smooth surfaces. However, on rougher terrain, the tires may not perform as well. That being said, the tires are puncture-resistant and should withstand most road hazards.

Saddle and Handlebars

The Trek 7200 comes with a soft and padded Bontrager Boulevard saddle that is perfect for long-distance commutes. What’s even better is that the saddle is attached to an alloy seatpost with adjustable suspension.

trek 7000 review

This means that your seatpost is more flexible, reducing the transfer of high-frequency road vibrations from your bike to your body. It also helps dampen the impacts of big hits from the road, making your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Also, the Trek 7200 comes with a Bontrager Approved handlebar made of solid steel and with a 50 mm rise.

You can always adjust the height of the handlebar to give you a comfortable fit. This means that you can ride for longer without experiencing any discomfort or strain on your back or shoulders.

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the perfect fit for your ride, the Trek 7200 hybrid bike has many sizes to choose from. With sizes ranging from 15″ to 25″, you’re sure to find the size that fits you just right.

The frame sizes are precisely 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, and 25 inches, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

And even with all the high-quality components, the Trek 7200 still manages to keep its weight down. With an average weight of about 26.4 lbs (11.9 kg), this bike is easy to handle and maneuver on the trails.

It’s not too heavy to carry around when you need to, but it’s still sturdy enough to support riders up to 275 to 300 lbs.

How much is the Trek 7200 Multitrack?

The current Trek 7200 value is estimated to be less than $100, you will most likely find one going from $65 to $110. But, keep in mind that it would be a used bike.

If you happen to find a brand-new Trek 7200, though this is very unlikely, expect the price to be from $250 to $450. It doesn’t go over $500.

BYD calls out the US and Europe for being ‘afraid’ of Chinese EVs

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Is the West afraid of Chinese electric cars? According to BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu, there are many examples of politicians who are worried about low-cost Chinese EVs, hinting at the US and Europe.

BYD says the US, Europe are worried about Chinese EVs

“If you are not strong enough, they will not be afraid of you,” Wang said at an industry event on Friday (via Bloomberg ).

He added, “There are many examples of politicians in other countries who are worried about EVs in China.” The comments come as the US and Europe aim to hamper Chinese EV imports with new tariffs.

BYD’s CEO said the tariffs are a testament to the strength of China’s auto industry. Wang’s swipe at the West comes after the US increased tariffs on China-made imports, including EVs, batteries, and critical minerals.

The EU is also expected to introduce new tariffs aimed at Chinese EVs shortly. Europe launched an investigation into China-made EVs as the global markets are “now flooded with cheaper electric cars,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in September.

China has since threatened to retaliate with a 25% tariff on imports as global trade tensions heat up.

BYD, China-made EVs take on global markets

BYD posted its second-highest sales ever last month after introducing a series of new lower-cost electric (and PHEV) cars.

The new BYD Seagull , its cheapest EV, starts at just $9,700 (69,800 yuan) in China. Even in overseas markets, the “mini Lamborghini” (as former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger led its design) is still one of the cheapest electric options.

BYD's-$10K-Seagull-EV

In Brazil, the Seagull EV starts at around $20,000 (99,800 BRL). BYD’s car transport ship, Explorer No 1, landed in Brazil’s Port of Suape earlier this week, unloading 7,000 new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs).

The Explorer first docked in Germany in February, carrying 3,000 vehicles, as BYD expands the brand globally.

According to global data collection firm Dataforce , Chinese EVs, like BYD and MG, accounted for around 9% of EVs sold in Europe last year. However, that number is expected to rise quickly over the next few years.

European lobby group Transport and Environment , Chinese EVs could account for a quarter of EVs sold in Europe this year.

After topping VW, becoming China’s top-selling automaker last year, BYD looks to take on global markets.

While addressing the audience Friday, Wang said the industry should embrace competition if it wants to manage the transition to EVs.

Electrek’s Take

BYD is quickly expanding overseas. It’s already an EV leader in key markets like Thailand, Brazil, Israel, Columbia, and others.

Despite its low price tag, BYD’s Seagull has earned praise from industry leaders. Ford’s CEO Jim Farley called it a “pretty damn good” car, warning rivals of BYD’s superior tech.

Even with tariffs, BYD expects the Seagull EV to launch as one of Europe’s cheapest electric cars at under $21,500 (20,000 euros). BYD is also planning a higher-end $27,000 (25,000 euro) model, according to European managing director Michael Shu.

Top comment by Grant

They are afraid of Chinese manufacturing. I would propose a compromise, by allowing them to build factories in the US and Europe as long as most everything for the vehicles are produced locally as well. This includes batteries.

With two planned plants in the region, BYD expects to overcome any potential impacts of tariffs on China-made EVs.

Although BYD is best known for its affordable EVs, the automaker is expanding into new segments, such as mid-size SUVs, luxury vehicles, and pickup trucks.

BYD launched the Sea Lion 07 last month, which will compete with Tesla’s top-selling Model Y. Starting at 189,800 yuan ($26,250), BYD’s new electric SUV undercuts the Model Y in China, which starts at 249,900 yuan ($34,550).

It also launched its first pickup, the Shark PHEV , in Mexico. The BYD Shark will compete with top-selling trucks like Toyota’s Hilux and the Ford Ranger in the region.
