  • Walking & trekking

Each journey may begin with a single step, but some require a few more steps than others.

Here’s the idea: we provide you with expert trail guides, accommodation, and porters (where necessary); you bring your legs and a sense of adventure. From the frosted peak of Kilimanjaro and Patagonia’s windswept trails to a more sedate stroll through the rice fields of Vietnam  or the rugged red hills on the Larapinta Trail , there’s a calf-stretching trip to suit every level of fitness and expertise. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Walking vs hiking vs trekking.

Outline of a running shoe with a red strip on the side

Our walking trips will take you on defined tracks and over smooth surfaces – think the grasslands of northern Thailand, rice paddies in Mai Chau, and New Zealand's idyllic Queen Charlotte Track. There’s no need for fitness preparation or specialized equipment; just you, your comfortable walking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. And we promise there’s not a base camp in sight.

Outline of a hiking shoe with red patch at the top

Make your way up magnificent mountains, through concentrated bushland, and across rugged, countryside trails on our range of leader-led hiking trips. Harder and longer than a walk but less physically demanding than a trek, hikes are the perfect in-between for those who still want to thoroughly explore the great outdoors without all the fuss of proper equipment.

An outline of a person carrying a backpack

Treks are often in remote destinations where the trails are barely visible, and the terrain makes it harder to traverse without specialized equipment. These treks range from tackling Kilimanjaro to testing your limits at Everest Base Camp and generally feature high altitudes and overnight stops with basic accommodation. Yep, say goodbye to showers and hello to unforgettable memories.

A group of hikers ready to start the trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal

Make the heroic climb to Nepal’s Everest Base Camp

Some destinations are simply more life-changing than others and Everest Base Camp might just be the most profound of them all. Boasting the world’s highest peak and the number one spot on every bucket list, this larger-than-life mountain range will have you challenging yourself in every way. But for the unbelievable views you’ll come across and the Himalayan culture you’ll be treated to, the trek to its base is worth it every time.

What is the range of walking & trekking holidays available?

Our walking & trekking tours span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day challenges in high mountains. We offer a range of tours in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the Americas, as well as plenty of classic hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

How safe are walking & trekking holidays?

The safety of our clients (you), staff (us), and all the people around us (our local friends and other trekkers) is our highest priority. This means we don't cut corners. Ever. All our leaders are adequately qualified, experienced, and insured so you don't need to worry about a thing. We only hike on well-settled trails and we follow local rules. Always. If the local authorities tell us it’s not advisable to walk certain trails then we won’t. If the weather is not looking good, we'll change our plans. If the trail is too busy, we'll turn around and hike elsewhere. It's as simple as that. We're all about staying safe, enjoying the best trails possible, and being flexible to achieve the best hiking experience for you.

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

What level of comfort can I expect on a walking & trekking holiday?

Most of our walking & trekking holidays are in the Intrepid Original standard, staying in small, authentic, and atmospheric 2–3-star hotels, using public transport where possible, and including all breakfasts, as well as some dinners and lunches depending on the travel destination. However, some of the trips are in the Intrepid Basix style – in most cases, these are trips featuring more remote itineraries such as in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, or Morocco. We then stay in either local guesthouses (or so-called teahouses in the Himalayas), or we camp. We often use private transfers on these trips too, as public transport options may not be available. Camping can be quite comfortable with spacious tents, clean water available, and where possible, a toilet tent set up. But we also want to make the experience as authentic as possible so you can always opt to camp under the stars.

How sustainable are walking & hiking trips?

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, and walking & trekking holidays are no different. In fact, spending most of the time on your feet, scaling local trailheads is probably as sustainable as it gets. We also try to use public transport as much as possible and contract only small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. We also align our itineraries with local standards and follow all rules set up by local authorities. The hikes we choose are mostly a combination of the iconic trails (aka ones you don't want to miss) and the lesser-known ones, ensuring there's a little bit of everything.

What to pack for walking & hiking trip?

All itineraries feature a packing list on the 'Essential Trip Information' document. Please read it carefully as it may contain trip-specific items you must bring. On a higher level, you always need to pack a backpack/day bag to accompany you on your daily walks, comfortable walking shoes or boots (depending on the trip), good trekking clothing (combination of lightweight and quick drying shorts, pants, short and long sleeve shirts), extra warm layers (sometimes even a down jacket) and waterproof gear. We also highly recommend bringing walking poles as these are very useful on steep ascents and long descents.

Read more about what to pack your walking & trekking trip

Will I be required to carry my own luggage?

The short answer is no. Your main luggage is transported for you on point-to-point itineraries (often by porters, therefore it should be packed in a soft/duffle bag) and your luggage stays in your accommodation for all centre-based itineraries. However, you'll need to bring a small bag/backpack (around 25-30 litre capacity) to carry around all of your essentials (water, snacks, extra layer, waterproofs) when you're on the move.

Do I need any special insurance?

You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won't need any special insurance to cover technical activities. However, to be 100% certain your cover is adequate for the trip you're doing, we suggest you talk to an insurer and present the planned itinerary of your chosen trip.

How big are the group sizes?

The maximum group size is 12 people on the majority of walking & trekking trips, however, some itineraries may go up to 16 people. But, on average, there are 7-10 people on each departure.

Are walking & hiking holidays suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! In fact, most of our customers are travelling solo, and there is no extra fee for doing so. One thing to note is that if are travelling solo, you'll be room-sharing with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, please speak to your booking agent as we're often able to accommodate this at an extra fee.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

The minimum age on our walking & trekking holidays is predominantly 15 (on some itineraries we can accept a lower age – sometimes even 12, so please enquire at the time of booking). But there is no maximum age limit. We’ll accept everyone who’s keen and physically ready for the challenge (no screening form needed – we trust your own judgement), regardless of age. After all, age is really only a state of mind, right?

Will I get altitude sickness?

On some of our hikes you will encounter high altitudes. When climbing above 2,800 metres (9,200 feet), it is common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude, regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!

There’s no real way to tell how your body will react to the rigours of altitude trekking, so it is important that you monitor your condition and discuss any prevailing symptoms with your guide. If you have any pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by high altitudes, be sure to get them checked out by a doctor before you leave.

But above all, try not to worry, most of our travellers shake off the effects of altitude pretty quickly and enjoy a safe and rewarding trek.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

Trekking & Walking

Why trek? Because the world's most spectacular wilderness regions can only be reached on foot | Lachlan Gardiner

Explore the world with your own two feet by embarking on a trekking or walking tour with World Expeditions.

There are a million ways to travel, but few resonate in the way that trekking does. Get back to nature, challenge yourself and enter landscapes well beyond our urban environments. Picture yourself enjoying a spontaneous moment as you smile back at a nomadic mountain lady, snack by a rushing stream, follow winding paths that weave through the mountains, and scale rugged and rocky terrain in search of the perfect sunrise. In a nutshell, a trekking trip is all about embracing unique moments, incredible landscapes and new cultures in some of the most isolated parts of the world.

Our trekking & hiking adventures take you to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful locations, with many of our treks beginning where everyone elses treks end.

With some of the most off-the-beaten-track trekking opportunities in the world, you can choose from a range of introductory treks to challenging treks designed to bring you closer to the culture and wilderness of a country. Our responsible travel guidelines have been developed to ensure our trekkers travel with minimal impact on the culture, environment and community, saving the beauty of this world for future generations. Whether it’s camping in semi-permanent campsites to discourage logging in the Himalayas, to hiring local guides, porters and cooks, your presence on one of our trekking trips means that you are helping the local community grow and develop both economically and environmentally.

Best of all, unlike many other trekking providers, our trip prices include the cost of accommodation, food, and transport so there won’t be any surprise hidden expenses while you’re on your trek.

Inclusions & Equipment

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours sometimes involve travel at high altitude (rarely exceeding 4000m, except on certain trips in Tibet, Peru and India) and may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

Introductory

Up to 5 or 6 hours a day at a slow but steady pace

Introductory to Moderate

Introductory walks with several moderate stages

Up to 5-7 hours a day at a steady pace. Treks will involve carrying a day pack and trail conditions will vary between well-defined to rough trails

Moderate walks with challenging stages

Challenging

Often in remote areas in variable, adverse weather conditions, for up to 8 to 10 hours+ a day, possibly more. Be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kgs, or in some cases a full pack weighing up to 20kg

Entry Level Mountaineering / Exploratory Treks

Classed as expeditions, they involve either extreme trekking and or basic mountaineering. Expect remote and poorly defined trails in variable weather conditions for up to 12 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). This may include a number of demanding high pass crossings and evacuation may be difficult from remote areas.

Intermediate Mountaineering

Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low to moderate angle snow slopes and travelling on crevassed glaciers.

Advanced Mountaineering

These are our most challenging expeditions. Most are participatory expeditions & involve load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and campcraft. Some of these expeditions also involve “technical” climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers / mountaineers only. Technical expeditions involve steep climbing at high altitude (including rock climbing).

The conditions are relatively straightforward and not technically difficult. Expect generally low angled slopes with no prolonged steep or exposed sections and glacier travel where participants are roped together. Abseiling may be required in short sections.

Intermediate

The conditions are variable with generally low angled slopes with some sections of moderately steep snow or easy rock where ropes are required. Some basic rock climbing and abseiling involved.

The conditions are challenging involving steep and exposed snow and ice slopes with sections of rock climbing. Some sections involve abseiling and belaying.

A more serious and technical undertaking involving long and exposed climbing on snow, rock and ice. Competent rope work, efficiency of movement and good technical skills are required.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures we suggest you have a reasonable level of fitness and health, a moderately active lifestyle and a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, starting at least two to three months before departure. Hill or stair walking with a 5-7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these adventures you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise three times a week, from a minimum of three months period to your departure. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45-60 minutes of aerobic type exercise, three to four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and excellent health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend one hour of aerobic type exercise, four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these challenging adventures, you will need an excellent level of fitness. Some treks may require you to carry a full pack weighing up to 20kg.

Suggested preparation: We suggest up to one hour of strenuous exercise at least four days a week, interspersed with a relatively demanding bushwalk at the weekend. The best exercise for trekking is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. Hill walking with a 7kg pack in variable weather conditions is a must. Multi day walks are ideal preparation for our challenging adventures.

To participate in these entry level expeditions or exploratory treks, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. The trips are suitable for first time mountaineers, previous altitude experience is preferable but not essential, and you must be comfortable in adverse weather conditions.

Suggested preparation: Physical fitness should be an ongoing thing, which should start from a base at around four to six months prior to departure and increase to build maximum endurance, stamina, flexibility and familiarity with the anticipated routine as much as possible by your trip commencement. Three to five hard sessions of 45 to 60 minutes of physical exercise per week such as running, hill walking, swimming, cycling or gym work will build excellent aerobic capacity and overall endurance and stamina which are so important in trekking and climbing at altitude. Overnight or multi day bushwalks (on rough, loose and rocky terrain) should be incorporated in your training regime; this develops skill and confidence on difficult terrain you will find on expedition. Rest and recovery, whilst at the same time steadily increasing your routine and incorporating variety, are just as important parts of the process if you intend to maintain and enjoy the regime for any duration.

Please review the ‘Physical Fitness’ section of the detailed trip notes for each expedition to ensure your fitness and training are sufficient.

To participate in intermediate level expeditions, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. Experience with multi-day trekking at altitude is essential. Experience using ice axes and campons is preferable but not essential.

Prior mountaineering experience is essential for participation in these advanced expeditions. Participation is also subject to acceptance by one of our high altitude mountaineering guides. Most are participatory expeditions, involving load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and camp craft. Some of these expeditions also involve ‘technical’ climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers only.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

This 96-mile trail takes you from the lowlands of Milngavie to the highlands of Fort William, passing through lochs, moors, and enchanting forests.

These are just a few examples of the most popular trekking holidays and routes. There are many other incredible treks around the world, each with its own unique appeal and challenges. When choosing a trek, consider factors such as difficulty level, altitude, climate, and the duration that suits your preferences and fitness level. It's also important to be well-prepared, follow safety guidelines, and travel with experienced guides or tour operators who specialize in trekking adventures.

Do I need a lot of experience for the trekking trips?

No, you do not necessarily need to be an experienced trekker to join a small group guided trip holiday. Many guided trekking trips cater to a range of experience levels, from beginners to seasoned hikers. The beauty of guided trips is that they often offer options and flexibility to accommodate different fitness levels and trekking abilities.

Tour operators typically provide detailed itineraries that outline the difficulty level, duration, and physical demands of the trek. This allows you to choose a trek that aligns with your fitness level and preferences. Some guided trips are designed for beginners or families with children, featuring shorter and less strenuous routes with ample support and rest days. Others may offer more challenging treks for experienced hikers looking for a physically demanding adventure.

Guided trips provide several benefits for less-experienced trekkers. Expert guides accompany the group, ensuring your safety, offering support and guidance, and sharing their knowledge about the trail, local culture, and environment. They are often trained in first aid and have extensive experience in leading treks, making them valuable resources throughout the journey.

Additionally, guided trips typically provide necessary equipment, arrange accommodations, and handle logistics such as permits and transportation, relieving you of the burden of organizing these aspects yourself. This allows you to focus on the experience and enjoyment of the trek without the added stress of planning and logistics.

While prior fitness and some level of physical preparedness are beneficial for any trek, it's not uncommon for individuals with varying fitness levels to participate in guided trips. However, it's always recommended to consult with the tour operator or trip organizer to ensure you choose a trek that suits your capabilities and to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

Remember, joining a small group guided trip holiday is an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself, learn new skills, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the trekking destination. With the right mindset, proper preparation, and the support of experienced guides and fellow travelers, you can embark on a rewarding trekking adventure regardless of your previous experience.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group walking and trekking tours typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group trek.

Will someone be transporting our luggage?

Yes, on most guided trekking holidays your luggage will be transported for you on a daily basis to your next stop. This allows you to focus on the trek itself without the burden of carrying your entire luggage throughout the journey.

Typically, on guided treks, a support team or porters will be responsible for transporting the main luggage from one accommodation point to another. This can include tents, sleeping bags, extra clothing, and any other gear not required during the day's trek. The porters or support team will ensure that your luggage is safely transferred and ready for you at the next overnight stop.

It's important to note that there are weight limitations for the luggage that can be transported by porters. The specific weight limit may vary depending on the trek. Therefore, it's advisable to check with the details or with our team about the luggage weight restrictions and any guidelines regarding the type of bags that can be used (e.g., duffel bags or backpacks).

During the trek, you will typically be required to carry a daypack with essential items such as water, snacks, extra layers, camera, sunscreen, and any personal items you may need throughout the day's hike. The daypack is usually smaller and more manageable, allowing you to hike comfortably while keeping necessary items within easy reach.

It's essential to communicate with us about the luggage arrangements and clarify any questions or concerns you may have. We can provide specific information about the luggage transport logistics for your particular trek, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience on the trail.

Is there any basic gear I need?

When embarking on a guided trekking holiday, it's important to have the appropriate gear to ensure your comfort, safety, and enjoyment throughout the journey. While specific gear requirements may vary depending on the destination and trek difficulty, here are some essential items to consider:

Hiking Boots: Invest in a sturdy pair of hiking boots that provide ankle support, good traction, and are comfortable for long walks. Ensure they are broken in before the trek to avoid blisters and discomfort.

Backpack: Choose a backpack of appropriate size to carry your essentials during the trek. Look for one with padded straps and a waist belt for added comfort. Consider a waterproof cover or liner to protect your belongings from rain.

Clothing: Layering is key for trekking. Pack moisture-wicking base layers, lightweight and breathable shirts, long pants, and a waterproof and windproof jacket. Carry extra warm layers for higher altitudes or colder conditions.

Headwear: Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat or a cap. Additionally, pack a beanie or a buff for colder climates or higher altitudes.

Gloves: Carry lightweight gloves for chilly weather or higher altitudes where temperatures may drop. Opt for waterproof gloves if you anticipate encountering rain or snow.

Socks: Invest in moisture-wicking, cushioned hiking socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable. Pack multiple pairs to rotate during the trek.

Trekking Poles: Trekking poles provide stability and reduce strain on your knees and joints during descents. They can be especially useful on steep or uneven terrain.

Sleeping Bag: If overnight stays in mountain huts or camping are part of the trek, bring a sleeping bag suitable for the expected temperatures. Check with your tour operator for specific recommendations.

Water Bottle and Water Purification: Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the trek. Some destinations may require water purification methods, such as water filters or purification tablets, to ensure safe drinking water.

First Aid Kit: Pack a basic first aid kit with essentials such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, blister treatment, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need. Your tour operator may provide a comprehensive first aid kit, but it's always good to have personal supplies.

Other Essentials: Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, a headlamp or flashlight, a whistle for emergencies, trekking maps or guidebooks, and a camera to capture your memories.

It's essential to check with your tour operator or trekking company for a detailed gear list specific to your trek. They can provide valuable insights on any additional gear or equipment required based on the destination, weather conditions, and the services they provide.

Remember to pack sensibly and keep your backpack as light as possible while including all the necessary items. Properly preparing and having the right gear will enhance your trekking experience and allow you to fully enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and adventures along the way.

Trekking at altitude

It’s hard to know how this will affect you - as it can have an impact on travellers regardless of age, prior experience at altitude or fitness level. It certainly takes a couple of days to get used to the altitude so definitely take the time to do so. Ask our team if you are unsure how to add this in to your trip, but most include this in the itinerary.

Most people will experience some symptoms of altitude but as long as you are well prepared, you will get aclimitise in a few days and have a great time. Make sure you drink lots of water, take your time, listen to your body and let your leader know if you are feeling unwell. All leaders trekking at altitude are full trained in recognising the symptoms of rare, but more serious conditions that can arise at altitude.

If you have any concerns or are worried about medical conditions you should speak to your GP before travelling.  We strongly recommend against buying medications that are available over the counter in some destinations without previously speaking to your GP.

Can I opt out of any of the walking?

On most guided trekking holidays, you have the flexibility to opt out of specific walks or sections of the trek if needed. While trekking holidays are primarily designed for hiking and exploring on foot, tour operators understand that individual preferences and circumstances can vary.

If you feel the need to opt out of a particular walk due to fatigue, injury, or any other reason, it's essential to communicate your concerns to the tour guide or trek leader. They will be able to provide guidance and explore alternatives that suit your needs. In some cases, depending on the logistics and the availability of support vehicles or alternative transportation, arrangements can be made for you to skip a particular section and rejoin the group later.

It's important to remember that opting out of walks or sections of a trek may impact your overall experience and the itinerary. Some treks may have limited access points or alternate routes, and certain highlights or viewpoints may be missed if you choose to skip sections. Additionally, opting out of walks should be based on genuine concerns for your well-being or safety and not solely for convenience or preference.

When considering opting out of walks, it's advisable to have an open and honest conversation with the tour operator or trek leader. They can provide guidance on the specific conditions, difficulties, and alternatives available, ensuring that you make an informed decision that aligns with your needs and maintains the overall group dynamics.

Ultimately, guided trekking holidays are designed to provide an immersive and rewarding experience. While walking is a significant component of these trips, tour operators aim to accommodate the varying abilities and preferences of participants, within the limitations of the trek and its logistics.

Do we still walk in bad weather?

Guided trekking holidays prioritise the safety and well-being of participants. Therefore, the decision to walk in bad weather during a trek will depend on several factors, including the severity of the weather conditions, the terrain, and the expertise of the guides.

In general, trek leaders and guides closely monitor weather conditions and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the group. They are experienced in assessing weather patterns and understanding the potential risks associated with trekking in adverse conditions. In situations where the weather poses a significant safety risk, such as severe storms, landslides, or other hazardous conditions, trekking may be temporarily halted or alternative plans may be made.

However, it's important to note that trekking holidays often involve hiking in varied and sometimes challenging environments, where weather conditions can change rapidly. Mild rain, wind, or light snowfall may still be deemed acceptable for continuing the trek, especially if the terrain and trail conditions are manageable. In such cases, the guides may modify the itinerary, adjust the pace, or take necessary precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of the group.

Your safety and the safety of the group are paramount. It's crucial to follow the instructions and advice of the trek leader or guide regarding trekking in inclement weather. They will have the knowledge and experience to make informed decisions based on the specific circumstances and group dynamics.

Before embarking on a guided trekking holiday, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the expected weather conditions of the destination and season. This will help you prepare appropriate clothing and gear for a range of weather scenarios. Being mentally prepared for potential weather challenges can also enhance your overall experience on the trek.

Remember that adverse weather conditions can add an element of unpredictability to the trek, but they can also provide unique experiences and perspectives. The key is to prioritize safety and trust the expertise of your guides and tour operators in making informed decisions regarding trekking in bad weather.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.

More Information About Walking Holidays

Walking is typically done on well-defined tracks through scenic and accessible destinations with and smooth surfaces. It requires minimal preparation, however some level of fitness is recommended.

To show the relative difficulty of trekking cycling holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging.

Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 16 to allow easier interaction with the local people and to leave fewer footprints in a world where it is important that we are environmentally aware. Specialized equipment is generally not needed on a walking holiday. However, please feel free to bring personal equipment such as trekking poles if you feel it would help.
