When you’re making the big trip to Hawaii, you might plan on island hopping. But what’s the easiest way to get around? And is it worth the trip?

Hawaii island hopping is absolutely worth it. The islands are all incredibly different and it’s easy to get from island to island. But it’s important to know that island hopping can be time-consuming so you want to make sure your trip is long enough for these extra travel days.

To help you plan your trip, let’s get into the details.

Now that you’re about to know how to go inter-island like a pro, make sure you have the other parts of your trip figured out: 1. Options for Hawaii Island Hopping:

If you’re looking to island-hop in Hawaii, you have a few options. Depending on what islands you’re traveling between, you can get there by airplane or ferry. You can also book an inter-island cruise or a guided tour to island hop for a day.

Let’s look at these options more in-depth:

1. Flying between Hawaiian islands

Flying between the Hawaiian islands is the most popular and least expensive way to island hop.

Hawaii island hopping inter-island flights

Commercial Airlines offering inter-island flights:

There are three commercial airlines that offer inter-island flights in Hawaii:

1. Hawaiian Airlines : The largest operator of flights to and from Hawaii, Hawaiian Airlines has the inter-island routes covered. On Hawaiian Airlines, you can find direct flights between Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Hawaiian Airlines flies into the major airports on each island: Honolulu, Oahu (HNL), Kahului, Maui (OGG), Lihue, Kauai (LIH), Kona, Hawaii (KOA), and Hilo, Hawaii (ITO).

2. Southwest Airlines : The newest entrant to inter-island travel, Southwest Airlines operates on similar routes to Hawaiian Airlines. You’ll get direct flights between the four major islands. Known for their low-cost fares, they’re generally your cheapest option for inter-island flying (though Hawaiian Airlines has extremely competitive fares).

3. Mokulele Airlines : Mokulele Airlines operates small, turbo-prop planes that fly from the main airports as well as smaller airports on the islands. It is the only airline to fly to both Molokai and Lanai. On the Big Island, it flies out of Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA) as well as Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE). And on Maui, it flies out of both Kahului (OGG) as well as Kapalua (JHM). Just like the other airlines, it also flies out of Honolulu (HNL) and Lihue (LIH).

Things to Consider When Between Southwest and Hawaiian Flying Interisland:

  • Southwest offers free checked bags, a big savings unless you qualify for free bags on Hawaiian.
  • Hawaiian Airlines provides an island vibe with colorful decor and serves juice (passion orange nectar or something similar).
  • Hawaiian Airlines offers better options for seat assignments. If you book early, you can reserve a free seat. They also offer reasonably priced extra legroom upgrades.
  • Hawaiian Airlines has premium options like first-class and extended legroom in economy.
  • If you want USB charging at your seat, choose Southwest (pending fleet-wide installation).
  • Southwest makes canceling and rebooking simpler. Hawaiian does not offer the ability to re-deposit and use funds as easily as Southwest.

Airports on Each Island (+ map):

Each Hawaiian island that you can visit has at least one airport, which makes island hopping a breeze. The airport codes for each airport are:

Oahu: Daniel K. Inouye Airport in Honolulu (HNL)

Maui: Kahului Airport (OGG) Kapalua Airport (JHM)

Hawai’i (Big Island): Hilo International Airport (ITO) Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE)

Kauai: Lihue Airport (LIH)

Lana’i: Lana’i Aiport (LNY)

Molokai: Molokai Airport (MKK)

Flight times between Hawaiian islands:

2. taking a ferry between the hawaiian islands.

If you’re traveling between Maui and Lanai, you have the option of taking a ferry. Expeditions Lanai operates a ferry service for the 45-minute trip between the two islands.

Here’s a video of our day trip to Lanai using Expeditions Lanai to island hop:

If you’re looking to take a ferry to Molokai, you’re out of luck. Unfortunately, while a ferry used to operate between Maui and Molokai , that service stopped in 2016.

3. Cruising between the Hawaiian Islands

If you’re set on seeing multiple islands in a short period of time and you don’t want to fly, taking an inter-island cruise is an option. Norwegian Cruise Line offers options that depart from and return to Oahu, making stops on the neighbor islands.

If a Hawaiian cruise is up your alley, we have more resources for you! We cover all the cruise ports and what to know , the best time to cruise Hawaii , shore excursions on each island: Maui , the Big Island , Kauai , and Oahu . Plus you can grab a comprehensive Cruising Hawaii Guide with everything you need to know, all in one place.

4. Guided day trips

If you’re looking to island-hop just to make a day trip to Pearl Harbor, your best bet might be to go with a guide. Why? Guided tours offer an efficient and stress-free way to see as much as possible in a short day trip. Rather than needing to make reservations, book and pick up a rental car, and navigate a new spot, a guided trip can take care of the headache for you.

Is it easy to travel between the Hawaiian Islands?

Traveling between the Hawaiian islands is easy. The flights are short — 30 to 45 minutes in the air. Just enough time to get a glass of water or POG (Passion Orange Guava juice) if flying Hawaiian Airlines.

How much does it cost to travel between the Hawaiian Islands?

Depending on when you want to travel and how far in advance you book your tickets, travel between the Hawaiian islands can be very reasonable. Flights can be found as cheap as $39 each way on Hawaiian and Southwest Airlines. $39 is the best we’ve seen. Expect to pay between $50 to $100 for a one-way ticket.

How long does it take to travel between the Hawaiian islands?

Flights between each Hawaiian island are short: expect them to last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes for a direct flight. But even though the flight itself is short, when you’re island hopping in Hawaii, the entire process can easily take 4 to 5 hours (door to door). You’ll need to drive to the airport, return your rental car, go through security, fly to the next island, pick up a new rental car, and check into your hotel.

Expect your travel day to take even longer if you aren’t able to get a direct flight. Many of the inter-island flight options require a stop in Honolulu before heading onto your final destination.

For most people, flying is the easiest way to travel between the Hawaiian islands. Southwest, Hawaiian Airlines, and Mokulele Airlines all operate plenty of flights each day that will take you between all of the islands.

If you’d prefer to have all of the island-hopping details taken care of for you, then the easiest way to travel between the islands is on a cruise ship.

Should you visit multiple islands on your trip to Hawaii?

If you have the time, you should consider visiting multiple islands on your trip to Hawaii. Each island offers something very unique and different. But make sure you’re giving yourself enough time on each island before moving to the next.

We generally recommend that you spend at least 5 days on each island that you visit. Ideally, you’ll be able to spend a little more time on each island to fully experience it as well as relax.  One ambitious newsletter reading couple visited all 4 of the major Hawaiian island in just 13 days, and while we don’t recommend it, we let them write all about it and share their itinerary .

🏆 Editor’s Pick : For my money, the Private Southern Island Geopark Tour from Langkawi is the best tour for island hopping because it offers a wealth of natural beauty and adventure with stellar reviews!

From snorkeling and jetskiing in crystal clear waters to exploring the local culture and cuisine, there’s so much to see and do on a Langkawi island hopping activity. Langkawi is one of the best places to go island hopping in Malaysia!

Plus, opting for a private or small group island-hopping Langkawi tour allows you to explore at your own pace, ensuring that you don’t miss out on any of the highlights.

✅  Pro Tip:  Before booking, read the frequently asked questions sections for the tour(s) you’re considering to ensure you pick the best one for your needs and interests.

I do recommend you take a private tour for an overall better experience and opt for at least three days total on the island to make the most out of your time in Langkawi.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable vacation experience full of adventure and relaxation, then look no further than an island-hopping tour Langkawi from this list!

Happy island hopping! 🏝🚤😎

| Langkawi #1 Top Must Do Activities - Island Hopping Langkawi

island-hopping-langkawi-1

Island Hopping Langkawi is probably the most popular boat tour in Langkawi. The tour starts at 9.00 in the morning for 4 hours. It covers three islands that include wonderful scenic islands to the south of the main island of Langkawi and eagle feeding where you can watch the marvelous spectacle of many eagles swooping down from the sky to catch their prey on the water.

The two islands offer plenty of activities including swimming in a scenic freshwater lake, paddle boating, snorkeling from the soft sandy beach, lounging and sunbathing, or just relaxing and enjoying the stunning scenery all around.

The island hopping langkawi tours usually start from Teluk Baru Jetty or Kuah Jetty located in the southern part of Pantai Tengah and before Resorts World or Star Cruise Jetty. So if you are staying at Pantai Tengah or Pantai Cenang areas, the island hopping tours would be very convenient.

Morning is the best time for Island Hopping Langkawi

You can start your morning with the harmonious drive into the edge of mangrove forest. Get ready for the most scenic boat ride to the wetlands where numerous types of greenery and mangrove trees will greet you in your journey. In other words , now is the best time to book for a Island Hopping Langkawi and take pictures of all the wonderful things you see in this place.

Tourists and travelers can even continue their journey by exploring waves that are packed with unimaginable formation of limestone amazingly crafted by the hands of nature. No other place can let you experience seeing the golden sunshine as you gaze up into the sky and as watch those eagles circling around the ultimately majestic skylines. Langkawi is actually a home to three different eagle species.

Island Hopping Langkawi - 2024 Package starting from RM45

Explore Pregnant Maiden Island

This is the first island you will be visiting. It takes about 20 minutes to reach this fascinating island from Teluk Baru jetty. A total of 1 hour is given for you to spend here. This includes 10 to 12 minutes one-way walk up the long flight of stairs to go up the mountain and down from the other side to reach the wonderful Lake of the Pregnant Maiden and same way back. So come prepared for this nice trek and carry water bottles.

This is a wonderful scenic freshwater lake surrounded by mountains that are covered with dense forests. The lake was formed when a large underwater cave collapsed many years back. You will also see large limestone formations. Pulau Dayang Bunting is part of UNESCO World Heritage Geoparks.

Here you can indulge into several activities like swimming at the lake, solar paddle boating (at extra charge), natural catfish spa at designated areas to clean up dead cells from your feet, walk through the forest and see the Miracle Border where the lake is separated from the sea by a thin rocky ridge, or just lounge on the wooden planks next to the lake.

From the lake, if you look at the mountains at the fringes, you can clearly see an outline of a woman lying on her back who is 6-7 months pregnant, and thus the name of the lake.

There are paddle boats available here. Each has a capacity of 2 to 3 persons. If you do not plan to swim, then this is a good way of going around the lake and sightseeing. Paddleboat ride costs extra.

Having enjoyed Dayang Bunting island and the lake for about 40 minutes, you will walk back to the island jetty to get back to your boat. The next stop is Pulau Singa Besar.

Eagle watching Activity at Pulau Singa Besar

Langkawi Eagle feeding is a must activity when you take the island hoping Langkawi Tour. The feast begins as the boat circling around while revving it’s engine. This is to make sure the chicken skin to be scattered around and the eagles will flying around and snatch the floating chicken skin.

The reason why the eagle is often around when they hear the revving boat engine is because, the fishermen often discard small fishes caught in their nets, which made for easy pickings for the eagles.

If you are lucky, there more than hundred eagle waiting and will have some hunting ‘show’ for the tourist. The most anticipated bird in the mangroves of Langkawi’s mangroves among bird enthusiasts is the Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera, Burung Pekaka Emas Bakau). Near-threatened bird of Langkawi, Malaysia and Red Eagle or Brahminy kite.

Red Eagle or Brahminy kite nowhere to be found accept in Langkawi, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. This is one the reason a nature’s lover have to come here and catch a sight of The Red Eagle of Langkawi during mangrove tour langkawi.

Island Hopping Langkawi - 2024 Package starting from RM45

Relaxing at White Sandy Beach of Pulau Beras Basah

This island is the last stop for the island hopping langkawi tour. The name literally means “Island of wet rice”. This is a picture perfect island with far reaching views of the sea and wonderful soft white sands. It’s a great place for the beach lovers and swimmers. There is a stall that offers banana boating, jet skis, Parasailing and also beer and some snacks.

If you love snorkeling, you can rent a snorkeling gear from the kiosk on the island. It going to cost RM15 per set. However, don’t expect too much when you snorkeling here as compare to  Pulau Payar Snorkeling . Sometimes due to the passing boats, the water gets murky and the water visibility could drop to a meter or so. This is when snorkeling won’t be ideal.

The island is an excellent place to relax. You will get about one hour here. So after a tiring day under the scorching sun, if you just want to lounge and relax, find one of the many shady trees and enjoy the views as the gentle breeze flows. Otherwise, take a stroll along the old pier at the island.

I would suggest that you bring your own food and beach blanket if you plan to do a picnic here. Note that there are plenty of monkeys around who will be constantly targeting your food. So be careful and do not go near them or instigate them in any way. The monkeys often pull the rubbish out of the beans and make the area quite dirty. Due to heavy tourist flow, the island and the beach can get quite crowded at times.

After about an hour at Pulau Beras Basah, you will head back to the Teluk Baru Jetty and then back to your hotel.

Island Hopping In Langkawi Speedboat

I don’t think any other tour on this list comes close to this island-hopping trip. It is the cheapest option by a considerable distance but you still go to 2 islands and get to see the eagles being fed. Transfers to the boat are even organized if you can get to one of the bus pick-up points! Genuinely the best value tour either of us has ever been on. Check out this exact tour here.

Island Hopping In Langkawi - CHEAP AND WORTH IT?

Choosing The Best Island Hopping In Langkawi Tour

There are 3 main ways you can go island hopping in Langkawi; shared boat tour, private boat tour, and jet skiing. You probably already know which you are going to choose but we will break down the best of each type to help you make your final decision.

Remember to click through any of the buttons and links to get more information, prices, reviews, and availability for all of the tours featured in this post.

Langkawi Island Hopping Speedboat

This is the exact tour that Jade and I jumped on. We booked the night before as we couldn’t really believe the price and came to the conclusion that if it was terrible then we didn’t really have too much to lose.

We made our way down to Mcdonald’s near Pantai Cenang beach (we were staying nearby) but we could’ve arranged to be picked up from our hotel for around 50 cents more! Were we being cheap or do we just love exercise? You decide.

Monkey that be seen on your island hopping in langkawi tour

There are other options to be picked up from other locations on the island if you are not staying close to Pantai Cenang beach, you can see these options whilst checking availability here.

Firstly, you make your way over to Dayang Bunting island which is famous for its large freshwater lake and wild monkey population. It’s a 10-minute walk from the boat to the lake where you can swim, kayak, sunbathe, and do other activities.

You can get locker on dayam bunting lake whilst island hopping in langkawi

You have an hour on the island so bear that in mind if you are planning on doing anything other than having a swim and you may not have time.

The boat then takes you over to the eagles where your driver will throw some chicken pieces into the water and you can watch the eagles swoop down and feed. It’s a pretty majestic sight.

island hopping tour

Finally, you will be taken over to the second island where you will have another hour to chill, swim, and drink from a chilled coconut before being taken back to the starting point.

The type of beaches you can expect on your island hopping in langkawi tour

This is an incredible 3-hour tour that will have you back for lunchtime will the rest of the day ahead of you (you can also go in the afternoon if you have plans in the morning). Considering the price, I highly recommend everyone in Langkawi does this tour. Check out availability and price here.

Key Information

  • Tour Duration: 3 Hours
  • Pickup Included: Yes (if selected)
  • Age Suitable For: All
  • Tour Pace: Medium
  • Start Time: 08:45
  • Need To Take: Swimwear!

Click here to check availability and prices.

Langkawi Island Hopping – Private Boat

This is the EXACT same tour as above but you don’t share your boat with other people, simple as that. If you have a large group then it actually works out cheaper! Or if you just simply want to relax without having to worry about other people around you then this is the option for you.

Langkawi Archipelago JET SKI Tour – 4 Hours

Are you looking for something a little more exciting?! Then maybe you should be considering an island hopping tour in Langkawi on a jet ski! The tour will start at Pantai Cenang Beach view and everyone will be provided water shoes and be given a short lesson on how to use the jet ski.

Jet Skiing on an island hopping in langkawi tour

This jet ski will then take you to 8 islands throughout the Langkawi archipelago which is the most I have encountered out of all of the tours I have seen. This includes the famous Dayang Bunting island where you will have time to swim in the freshwater lake and see the wild monkeys.

The tour will also give you time to snorkel and swim at the various stops along the way whilst finishing at a secluded beach to top off this incredible experience. If there are two of you then you can save some money by sharing a jet ski or you can choose to have one each. Check out prices, availability, and reviews here!

  • Tour Duration: 4 Hours
  • Pickup Included: No
  • Age Suitable For: 12+
  • Start Time: 9 am / 2 pm
  • Need To Take: Swimwear

Jet Ski Island Hopping – 2 Hours

If you would rather use Klook (a very popular booking platform in South East Asia) then this island hopping in Langkawi jet ski tour is perfect. It is very similar to the jet ski tour above but does not last quite as long.

Rather than 4 hours, it is 2 hours but the price reflects this with a substantially lower cost. If you choose the 1 jetski + passenger option it is literally half the price so if you are looking for a shorter similar experience and you are on a budget then look no further and check out this jet ski tour here.

  • Tour Duration: 2 Hours
  • Start Time: 8:45 am / 1:45 pm
  • Tour Pace: Fast

Southern Geoforest Private Tour

This is another, well reviewed, island hopping in Langkawi experience that visits Dayang Bunting island, the eagles, and a final stop at a beautiful remote beach. It has the added benefit of a fixed cost as it is private so the more people you have the cheaper it becomes (up to 8).

This is a great option if the top recommended tour in this post is completely full as it is essentially the same.

  • Pickup Included: Yes
  • Start Time: 3 pm

Langkawi Island Hopping Private With Transfers

This island hopping in Langkawi activity has the benefit of visiting 3 islands as well as seeing the eagles feed which is one more than the other boat tours in this post. However, the price is significantly more and I do not think that this reflects the added hour and added island well.

It is private and it is the longest island hopping in Langkawi tour on this list (in a boat) so it might be for you if you want to absolutely make the most out of your day. Check out the prices and availability here.

Where To Stay In Langkawi

The island hopping in Langkawi tours in this post tend to start at the jetty near Pantai Cenang beach. This is also one of the best places to stay on the entire island, in our opinion. I have included 3 of our favorite accommodation options below so make sure to check them out!

We all know how frustrating it can be to hire snorkels from local vendors as the quality tends to be below par, or they just immediately fog up. We have chosen the Greatever snorkel set due to its affordability, face fit, and anti-fog attributes, which all combined make for an excellent addition to your luggage!

ThermoFlask Stainless Steel Bottle

If you are going for a long backpacking adventure, or you go through plastic water bottles way too quickly, then you need to check out this stainless steel water bottle by ThermoFlask. It will take the beating of months/years on the road and keep your drinks ice cold or toasty warm, wherever you may be.

Sun Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen

We all know what sunscreen is and we all know how important it is but why go with Sun Bum? They are cruelty-free and are compliant with the Hawaii 104 Reef Act meaning that you will be helping decrease the amount of damage sunscreens have to the environment that you are swimming in. If that hasn't convinced you then click through to find out even more.

Other Things To Do In Langkawi

Langkawi is a small island but there is plenty to keep you busy, from cruises and water-based tours to road trips and finding incredible mountain views!

Mangrove Tour

We wrote an entire article about the mangroves in Langkawi as the island is famous for its mangrove forests and what better way to explore these forests than jumping on a boat and venturing through them? You will get dinner on a floating fish farm and see the wonderful nature that Langkawi has to offer. It works quite well in tandem with an island hopping in Langkawi tour as they are on opposite sides of the island. Check out our recommended tour here.

island hopping tour

Kayaking Tour

If you want to see the mangroves in style then you could also jump on a kayaking tour which will let you go down even narrower and more mysterious arms of the forests. We went on a sunset kayaking adventure which we highly recommend. Check out the tour we did here or watch the video below to see how good the tour really was. See the full article here for other kayaking adventures in Langkawi!

An Incredible Langkawi Mangrove Kayaking Tour - Possibly The BEST There Is!

Sunset Cruise

This has to be the most romantic thing to do in all of Langkawi. We wrote an article comparing all of the best options for a sunset cruise so check that out here or watch the video below to see how great our experience was. After watching the video click here to book the exact tour we did (we know you’ll want to).

The BEST Sunset Cruise In Langkawi!

Eagle Square

If you happen to be in Kuah (the de facto capital of Langkawi) then I think it is worth checking Eagle Square out. It is a giant statue of the island’s bird – the Brahminy kite. I recommend visiting just before your sunset cruise as it is quite close to the starting point for this experience. If you are not planning to go to Kuah then maybe give it a pass.

island hopping tour

Cable Car & Sky Bridge

The Langkawi Sky Cab covers a distance of 1700m and takes you all the way up to the mountains for the best scenery in all of Langkawi. Then, when you get to the top, you can walk the famous Langkawi sky bridge. This bridge spans over the peaks in the mountains and is truly a spectacular piece of engineering. Check out a tour of the cable car and sky bridge here.

island hopping tour

Pantai Cenang Watersports

Pantai Cenang beach is definitely the best place on the whole island to get stuck into some affordable and epic watersports like; banana boating, parasailing, and jet skiing. Even if you don’t want to do watersports, the beach is lined with great restaurants and bars so this is a great place to spend a day chilling.

island hopping tour

Taking A Road Trip

What? A road trip on this small island? YES, why not? We rented a car on the island and we can attest to how much more freedom this gives you across the island. Langkawi is deceptively bigger than you might think and there is not a great public transport system and taxis can quickly become more expensive than just hiring your own car. Check out the video below to see what I mean and check out prices and availability here.

Phuket is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand – and is also an awesome basecamp for visiting surrounding areas like the James Bond island or the Surin Islands.

The best islands for Greek island hopping are Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Ios, Rhodes, Santorini, Milos, and Crete.

On all of our bike tours you are accompanied by our competent guides, who not only lead you safely to the most remote corners of all islands, but also share interesting facts about the host country and its inhabitants. Decide for yourself whether you want to travel more casually by bike or e-bike or more actively by mountain or road bike.

What our Guests Have to Say

Trip was excellent. Staff were kind, thoughtful, and accommodating. Guides were knowledgeable and patient. Cycling routes were well thought out. Safety was paramount. I might have reconsidered if I had known how challenging the rides would be, or opted for an ebike. I think that was not clearly evident on the information, so the level of cycling should be particularly highlighted.

This is our 3rd trip with Island Hopping and it was the best we experience. The ship was in beautiful condition, all of the staff were cheerful, helpful and accomodating and our Guides were easy going, informative and very organized. We have high praise for ** and *** who absolutely made the trip a perfect vacation. They are the best team.

Very friendly and knowledgeable Guides. Friendly crew. Great food on the boat and also lovely lunches organized by guide. Plenty of time to swim and relax. Altogether a fun holiday. My fourth or fifth trip with Inselhuepfen. Always well organized.

A fantastic way to see Croatia! The ship and crew were great and the guides absolutely fantastic. Island Hopping have also been extremely flexible and helpful when our plans were in doubt due to Covid-19. It's great to see a holiday company who are helping their customers through this tricky period and this would give us the confidence to book with them again in the future.

I highly recommend booking through Island Hopping. Communication, especially during these challenging times with coronavirus, was excellent. The itinerary provided was very detailed and provided more than enough information. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and kept us safe on the roads. They were also just a lot of fun to hang out with. I could not have asked for a more pleasurable trip - just the right amount of exercise and relaxation. Also, the food was top notch - way more delectable …

Staying on Osman Kurt is the most relaxing holyday I can imagine. Overnighting in a peaceful bay, swimming in the blue sea and enjoying the sun and wind while sailing. Mointain biking in the beautiful surroundings of Gulf of Gökova was a great experience. The crew on Osman Kurt took good care of us and we enjoyed the delicious Turkish cuisine everday. Our guides,*** were just fantastic! Great experience, great holyday :-)

Excellent trip!! The guides were absolutely superb. The organisation was faultless. Will definitely travel again.

**** was fantastic - professional, always in a good mood, entertaining in his descriptions, knowledgeable. We could not have asked for a better guide. As for the tour, everything ran very smoothly. Well planned, interesting stops and sites, we coordinated. The restaurants were well chosen, often too much food, but it was all very tasty. I enjoyed all the bike routes except the very last one was not interesting, I think this could be improved upon. I will tour with island hopping again.

Absolutely fantastic two weeks in Vietnam! Seamless organisation, amazing guides, lovely accommodation and wonderful people and country. Could not recommend enough. We went with the same company to Croatia a few years earlier and was also fabulous!

An island hopping holiday on the west coast

Get ready for seven unforgettable days of island adventure!

Discover what it means to island hop across the western islands of Scotland. This itinerary takes you from Arran in the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Skye in The Highlands. As you explore, you'll discover top attractions, see incredible coastline and scenery, and get a taste of island life. A good network of ferry services makes getting around pretty straightforward.

So, what are you waiting for?!

  • Distance 292 Miles 467 km
  • Transport Car
  • Main theme Islands

Day 1 Isle of Arran

And so you're off! Take the ferry from the Ayrshire port of Ardrossan and spend today discovering the charms of Arran, a small island with bags going on. Arran's one of Scotland's most accessible islands and the isle can be reached entirely by public transport. The ferry crossing takes just 55 minutes - so what are you waiting for?!

When it comes to dining out in the evening, choose from one of the many eateries - we recommend trying the island cheese if it's on the menu!

Brodick Castle and Country Park Brodick

island hopping tour

Brodick Castle, Garden & Country Park

© National Trust for Scotland

Head to Brodick Castle and Country Park, the only island country park in Britain. Traditionalists will love it; it's the quintessential Victorian Scottish estate. Steeped in history, the castle was the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton and houses a fabulous collection of artefacts, from silverware and paintings to even sporting trophies. Explore the garden to see the famous collection of rhododendrons or follow one of the woodland trails - you might even spot rare red squirrels.

Afterwards, set off along either the coastal road north or south to get a real feel for the island's geography. Let the kids blow off some steam at the Isle Be Wild adventure play area and for the adults, take it easy as you stroll through the formal gardens on the Silver Garden Trail.

Machrie Moor Standing Stones Machrie

island hopping tour

Get a breath of fresh air and explore an ancient wonder, the stone circles of Machrie Moor. The site dates back 4,500 years and is an archaeologist's dream.

There are standing stones taller than those at Calanais on the Isle of Lewis, and the walk through isolated moorland is simply splendid. From the stones, you can see Goatfell, Arran's mountain, and views across the sea.

Arran Distillery Lochranza

island hopping tour

Lochranza Distillery

Head to Lochranza for a distillery tour and discover the story of whisky on the Isle of Arran, see the distilling process in action, and sample the malt whisky and Arran Gold, a delightful, creamy whisky-based liqueur.

Day 2 Islay

Hop from Arran back to the mainland and make your way to Kennacraig to catch the ferry to Port Ellen on bonnie Islay, where fine malt whisky, pretty villages and beautiful beaches await!

When it's time to unwind in the evening, you can tuck into fresh seafood and other island produce in restaurants and pubs - and try a couple more whiskies, of course!

Bowmore Bowmore

island hopping tour

It would be criminal to come to Islay without paying a visit to a distillery. The island is a whisky region in its own right, renowned for producing malt whiskies which are peaty in character. The only trouble is that with eight active distilleries, it might be hard to choose which ones you visit!

How about Bowmore Distillery, north of Port Ellen on the A846? It's the oldest legal distillery in Scotland, set up by John Simpson in 1779.

Museum of Islay Life Islay

island hopping tour

Time to delve into the past! Housed in a former church, the museum is filled with a whole range of curios and objects from different periods, from carved grave slabs dating from 1400-1600 AD to maritime memorabilia recovered from shipwrecks, as well as photographs covering Edwardian and Victorian times.

Loch Gruinart Bridgend

island hopping tour

A huge flock of Barnacle Geese in flight.

Loch Gruinart is a working farm as well as a nature reserve.

Visit Loch Gruinart, a nature reserve which offers gentle walking past quiet beaches with views out to Colonsay. Whatever the season, you're bound to see some of the island's majestic wildlife - wading birds, secretive corncrakes and colourful butterflies. Perhaps you'll join a ranger on a guided walk or pop into the visitor centre to discover the island's natural heritage?

  • Level Access

From Islay, take the short ferry crossing from Port Askaig to Jura. It will feel like you've got away from it all.

George Orwell even described it as, 'the most un-get-at-able place' whilst penning  1984 . This island has one road, one distillery, one hotel, not many people - and LOTS of red deer! It's a perfect getaway and ideal place for spotting wildlife.

Paps of Jura Jura

island hopping tour

The Paps of Jura

Add a challenge to your west coast adventure and climb the Paps of Jura, the distinctive island peaks which can be seen for miles. Scaling the paps will probably take most of the day, so you could find an alternative walk if you're keen to get a distillery visit in, or explore more of the island.

Jura Distillery Jura

island hopping tour

Isle of Jura Distillery

We'd recommend a visit to the famous Jura Distillery. A chat with one of the distillery team is a great way to get an insight into island life. They are a friendly bunch who relish the opportunity to recount stories from the past - once, you've been, you'll want to become an honorary  Diurach . And the whisky is pretty wonderful stuff, too!

There's a bit of retracing your steps as you head back to beautiful Islay, and then back to Kennacraig on the mainland before driving north to Oban.

Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Islay to Oban, via Colonsay, on certain days. But you won't get long to pause for breath - you are off to the largest of the Inner Hebridean islands, the Isle of Mull!

Duart Castle Mull

island hopping tour

Duart Castle

A visit to the tearoom for a hearty slice of home-baked cake.

Discover the dungeons and state rooms of Duart Castle, a clifftop fortress which is the ancestral home of Clan Maclean. It's a building steeped in history - the Keep dates from the 13th century. Perched on a crag overlooking the Sound of Mull, you can drink in spectacular views from the battlements.

Mull Eagle Watch

Mull is one of the best places in Europe to spot white-tailed sea eagles. Take a guided walk to the bird hide at Glen Seilisdeir and look out for the largest bird of prey in Britain - their wing span can stretch as much as 8 ft! In addition, there are many local experts on the island offering wildlife safaris, or if you're interested in marine life, why not take a boat trip?

Day 5 Mull & Iona

Most of today will be spent on the charming Isle of Iona, situated off the south west of Mull. It's a small island, defined by its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful beaches, and has a fascinating history.

Cross on the ferry to Iona, which takes foot passengers only. Then embark on an exhilarating ferry crossing from Oban to Craignure, and keep your eyes peeled for Duart Castle in the distance, or even a few seals bobbing out at sea. When you arrive, catch the bus and go north to the isle's "capital" of Tobermory.

Leave Mull on the ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan, continuing on the B8007 through the beautiful scenery of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Then follow the A861 and the A830 to the port of Mallaig, where you can take the ferry to Armadale on Skye.

The Pacific islands Palau , Yap , Guam, and the norther Mariana Islands make up a perfect 14-16-day Pacific island hopping trip. They offer lots of WWII history, sunshine, diving, and awesome nightlife. I visited each island for a short time and hopped around. Its 3 countries: Republic of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and USA territories. Isn’t that awesome? The itinerary below is 14 days if you’re already in South East Asia but you should add a day or two if you are coming from a long way. Let’s hop!

The most difficult to reach island will be Yap with only one flight a week to Palau and two to Guam . At the time of my visit and writing of this article these are:

  • Tuesday evening flight Guam to Yap (arrives after midnight)
  • Saterday evening flight Guam to Yap continues Yap to Palau
  • Saterday after midnight flight Palau to Yap, continues Yap to Guam
  • Tuesday after midnight, flight Yap to Guam

You have to puzzle a bit what works best for you; in my case I flew back to Guam actually and then from Guam direct to Palau. Fix your days on Yap first with flights to/from Palau and Guam. When you have that fixed add your days on the other islands around it.

On Yap island of the Federated States of Micronesia I recommend staying at the Manta Ray Bay Resort which is the only high end resort on the small island. They also take care of all your excursions including diving. On Palau, I recommend staying at the Palau Royal Resort which is an awesome place to stay and has its own private beach. Arrange your tours and dive trips through Fish n Fins which also offers a Palau Helicopter tour .

On Guam, I recommend staying at the Outriggers Resort and have them arrange a one-day island tour as well. They are in the central area with all nightlife within walking distance. Saipan (stay at the Hyatt using loyalty points AND paying a small fee in cash. It’s cheap) is easily reached from Guam as is Rota (stay at the Golf Resort). Tinian however can only be reached from Saipan and I recommend having Walt from Discover Saipan arrange that for you.

Now, let’s look at the Pacific island hopping itinerary day by day but the details I’ll share in the day trip articles I’ll write over time.

I had a conference in Singapore before this trip and was already adjusted to the time zone. Before this Pacific island hopping journey, I stayed overnight in Manilla. On day one I flew from Manilla to Guam and onwards to Saipan arriving late afternoon. I just enjoyed local craft beer that night. Yes, Saipan has its own brewery! Saipans icon is the submerged WWII tank as you can see in the photo below. Isn’t that awesome?

The second day on Saipan I did a WWII tour with Walt from Saipan Discovery. He drove me around the island on a private tour. He literally showed me everything related to WWII including places most tours won’t take you! It was a long day but a very interesting and educational one. Walt also knows all about the history and explains at every sight very well what happened there. The photo below is taken at the top of suicide cliff. Thousands of Japanese jumped of this cliff to avoid being captured. In the evening, I just dipped in the ocean and watched the sunset from my hotel.

A Tinian day trip is something you must do if you are on Saipan or on a Pacific island hopping journey. It’s the island the bombers carrying the atomic bombs which destroyed Nagasaki and Hiroshima took off. You learn about WWII history and see the pits the bombs were stored. You also drive over runway Able, the runway from which the bombers took off. Walt of Discover Saipan showed me Tinian, he was so good on Saipan that I hired him again for the day. He knows so much and knows places regular tours don’t go to. You’ll also see Shinto shrines; old Chamorro culture remains including parts of the concentration camps they were put in. Tinian is small, but the story is huge!

Time to make the first hop of this Pacific island hopping itinerary (not counting arrival) but first a morning relaxing on Mañagaha Island. I first went for an hour snorkeling before arriving to the island. As I was on a private boat I could decide myself when to go back. I stayed for 2 or 3 hours on the island. After lunch, I headed back to the hotel to get my luggage as my flight to Rota was in the afternoon. I recommend booking with Star Marianas airline which also does the flights to Tinian. On Rota hire a car with Islander Car Rental as they are affordable and professional. If you arrive before sunset try to catch sunset at one of the empty beaches Rota has. A great way to end the day.

Rota Island is a very small island and driving almost all the roads doesn’t take more than 5-6 hours which includes seeing most if not all places of interest. I stayed two nights on Rota so that I would have one full day including private time on one of the empty beaches. The island is so quiet compared to Guam or Saipan , it was great to get away from all the people. Make sure to see sunset or sunrise too!

Read all about Rota island including the must-see places in this day trip report: MARIANA ISLANDS – Must see places on a Rota island overnight trip; the unspoiled marianas

Although it’s just a short 35 minute flight from Rota to Guam it still eats up about 4-5 hours of a day. There are several flights a day and I decided to take one around 3PM so that I could enjoy Rota’s quiet beaches in the morning and still have time in the evening on Guam. Plan this day as you wish, it’s the most flexible day of this Pacific island hopping itinerary! More time on quiet Rota ? Or more time on hectic Guam . It’s up to you.

Guam is the largest island of this Pacific island hopping itinerary yet seeing all war relics doesn’t take a full day. I drove around the island with a private guide who knew exactly where to go. WWII relics , old Spanish remains and a few natural views were included on the tour. A day well spend with some afternoon time left at the beach.

Another great half day trip on Guam is to the Latte Valley where I learned about the old Chamorro culture. The trip starts with a boat ride up the river and then continues with a visit to a Chamorro village. It ends with a great local lunch and I was back at the hotel around 2PM leaving enough time to get pampered at a spa. In the evening I explored Guam’s nightlife!

The flight from Guam to Yap leaves late evening so I still had a full day to recharge on Guam . Sleep long, dip in the ocean, snorkel a bit in front of the Outriggers Resort and go to the spa again. A relaxing day. I arrived past midnight at the Manta Bay Resort on Yap. It was also my first visit to the Federated States of Micronesia, a new country to tick of my list.

Yap is one of the states of the Federated States of Micronesia and a true paradise. With just two arriving flights a week only 12000 tourists visit the island yearly. It’s a divers paradise but I couldn’t dive yet unfortunately. After this Pacific island hopping trip I started a dive course back in the Netherlands. I went on a snorkel tour which was awesome! I swam with sharks but didn’t see any manta rays. In the afternoon, I had a massage at the spa of the Manta Ray Bay Resort Yap . Oh, you’ll get addicted there to tuna poke for sure; it’s so good.

Read about this Pacific island hopping day in detail : MICRONESIA FSM – Diving & snorkeling on Yap and swimming with sharks

Most people on Yap go on a half day land tour to the south of the island. I however wanted to see all relics from WWII so I did a full day tour. I saw crashed planes, old canons and more. The tour also includes a visit to the old local houses and stone money. Stone money is unique in the world and was carried to Yap all the way from Palau. I also love Yaps nature; it’s a true paradise. If you’re a diver than make sure to plan the land tour the last day as otherwise you’ll get problems flying out.

Read about this Pacific island hopping day in detail: MICRONESIA FSM – Things to do on Yap – island tour & how to get there

Flights to Palau leave late evening so I had time for a morning Kayak tour through Yaps mangroves. The rest of the day I relaxed at the pool of the Manta Ray Bay Resort and enjoyed their delicious tuna. If you are a diver you probably want to do the land tour this day as you would not be able to fly otherwise. I wish I could have stayed longer on Yap, I do need to return and to check also some other islands of the Federated States of Micronesia. It’s a true paradise but now my Pacific island hopping continued to Palau.

Read about this Pacific island hopping day in detail : MICRONESIA FSM – Must do activity on Yap: Kayaking through the mangroves

I still couldn’t dive, I should have learned before I started this Pacific island hopping trip, so I went again on a snorkel day trip. Fish m Fins on Palau knows where to go and they went to the best spots! I went in the water at three different spots of which one which had very shallow reef was the best. The current was strong and we just floated over the reef and the boat picked us up on the other side. It was so amazing and I could test my new underwater camera for the first time. In the afternoon, I relaxed at the private beach of the Palau Royal Resort . For dinner, I recommend Drop Off Bar & Restaurant which is the best on Palau.

There are several interesting places to discover on Palau. I only toured the main island and do want to return one day to see more of the outer islands too. There are more WWII relics there as on the main island and I still want to see the quarry of the stone money on Palau . That’s for another Pacific island hopping trip. I did a half day land tour to waterfalls, pre historic Chamorro stones, parliament, and a few other stops. Seeing Palau on the ground or sea is great but the best is from the air! A Palau Helicopter tour is a must-do and best arranged through Fish n Fins. It was amazing to see paradise from the air.

Read about this Pacific island hopping day in detail : PALAU – Must do: Palau helicopter tour; a bird’s eye view of paradise island

My flight was in the evening to Taipei, Taiwan . There are also flights to Manilla, Seoul, Tokyo, and some other destinations. As I still had a morning left I went on a kayak rock island tour which also included an hour snorkeling . The reef near one of the rock islands was amazing with beautiful marine life. A must do if you have a partial day left.

Unfortunately, everything comes to an end and so did my Pacific island hopping adventure. I hope to hop around more soon! I have plans to visit next year several other islands in the Pacific which might include Tuvalu, Tokelau, Fiji and hopefully Cook Islands. I hope this ultimate 14 day Pacific island hopping itinerary helps you plan your trip. Check also my 7-days Vanuatu itinerary and 7-days Solomon Islands itinerary if you want to extend your Pacific trip. I enjoyed every single day and wished I had more time but I had to continue elsewhere in the world.

The Ultimate Guide to Caribbean Island-Hopping

author image

See recent posts by Lilly Graves

Ever dream of visiting multiple islands in the Caribbean on the same vacation, without sharing space with hundreds (er, thousands) of cruisers who are on the same ship and trip? You’re off to a good start. The close proximity of the Caribbean islands makes it the perfect base for a freedom-filled island-hopping adventure with various activities, cultures, and island vibes to choose from. From golden sandy beaches and water sports to barefoot restaurants and rum shops, this famously laid-back Caribbean lifestyle is ideal for a tailor-made trip—and there are several itineraries ranging from budget-friendly to splurge-worthy. Below we’ve listed four Caribbean island-hopping itinerary ideas, along with some tips and tricks.

Caribbean Island-Hopping Itinerary #1: Use Public Ferries

Ferry to Paradise Island

Though not technically part of the Caribbean (it’s actually part of the North Atlantic), the Bahamas exudes everything you think of when dreaming of a Caribbean vacation. The island group is comprised of more than 700 stunning subtropical islands as well as thousands of cays. Of course, having your own boat or prop plane to explore the Bahamas is the best-case scenario, but if you’re not part of the one percent, we’ll give you a transportation option that is easy-peasy and won’t break the bank: the public ferry.

Nassau: Begin your adventure in the country’s capital, Nassau, 184 miles from Miami. This bustling capital city hub provides a nice mix of city and island life, as well as Bahamian culture and lifestyle. You can either stay a night or two on this island (New Providence) or head to neighboring Paradise Island—home of the Atlantis mega-resort and its gigantic waterpark, as well as a handful of other properties. If you don’t stay on Paradise Island, make sure to head across the bridge, which charges a nominal fee, and spend some time on Cabbage Beach. This is one of the world’s most famous stretches of sand for a reason.

Harbour Island: Now that you’ve seen two of the country’s more popular islands, next, take a morning ferry from Nassau to Harbour Island, via BahamasFerries.com, where you’ll find small island charm and long stretches of soft pink sand. There are some wonderful boutique hotels here that offer easy access to the beach. You can also spend time wandering through the quiet streets looking for pastel-hued cottages and unique architecture with nothing more than the occasional chicken and golf cart in your path.

Eleuthera: Since Harbour Island is located just off a much bigger island—Eleuthera—you can head there next, by water taxi (a short and cheap ride) to finish the trip in the pineapple capital of the world. Locals say that the Gregory Town pineapple claims to be the sweetest on the planet, and it is believed that the Bahamas was the first country to produce the fruit. While here, visit the Glass Window Bridge—a thin pathway connecting the rough Atlantic Ocean and the calm waters of the Bight of Eleuthera for striking photo ops. From here, take the ferry back to Nassau.

Exuma: You can finish the trip in Nassau (that’s four key islands) or continue the journey (optional) through more remote areas of the Bahamas. For instance, take another ferry from Nassau to Georgetown (Exuma Island), or jump on a 40-minute commercial flight to Great Exuma, via Bahamasair . Either way, the Exumas consists of 365 islands and is known for swimming pigs, nurse sharks, colorful fish, coral reefs, and other marine life, as well as boating excursions, on-island tours, and miles of rarely-visited beaches—in other words, plenty of Caribbean activities to keep you busy for days.

Caribbean Island-Hopping Itinerary #3: Book Through a Tour Operator

St. Lucia

For the easiest island-hopping itinerary, book through a tour operator. Sure, this alleviates some of the adventure factors of planning your own trip, but you’ll still be on your very own multi-island vacation without the cruise ship crowds. Check out companies like Abercrombie & Kent, G Adventures , or the U.K.-based company Tropic Breeze for various sailing excursions and options.

One affordable G Adventures sailing trip ($1699 at the time of publishing) buys an unforgettable eight-night trip sailing around St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Since resorts are generally so expensive year-round, sleeping on a catamaran keeps costs low AND allows easy access to hidden coves, isolated beaches, and snorkeling sites. Oh, and the cook makes fresh Creole cuisine for a taste of island life every night. Yum.

Our St. Lucia Hotel Pick: Sugar Beach, A Vicer oy Resort

Caribbean Island-Hopping Itinerary #3: Plan your Own One-Way Adventure

Beach at the Mary's Boon Beach Resort

So you consider yourself a savvy trip planner and want to create your own Caribbean island-hopping itinerary? That can be tricky. Finding direct flights between Caribbean islands can either be difficult, expensive—or both, but there are options. This sample itinerary allows you to see four French Caribbean islands, accessed with affordable, direct, one-way flights—in one fell swoop.

St. Martin: You’ll arrive first at St. Martin, an island divided between the French Republic and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We recommend staying on the French side due to its romantic restaurants, charming boutiques, and sandy beaches (the Dutch side, where you’ll fly into, is known as the party side).

St. Barts: After a few days on St. Martin, hop aboard a quick 15-minute flight to St. Barts, where you’ll land on one of the shortest runways in commercial aviation. If this sounds scary, you can choose the efficient 45-minute ferry crossing from St. Martin instead. However you choose to travel, arriving at St. Barts (or St. Barths as the locals call it) will offer laid-back luxury and French refinement. Spend a few days exploring some of the 16 beaches, each with its own distinct personality, and of course chic boutiques and restaurants. (In other words, prepare to splurge a bit more on this leg of the trip.)

Guadeloupe: From St. Barts, take a one-way flight to Guadeloupe. This French territory with 12 islands offers plenty of deserted beaches and jungle hikes. The main two islands (joined by bridges) are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, which form a butterfly shape from above.

And beyond: Depending on how much time you have, from Guadeloupe, you can access other islands like Martinique, St. Lucia, and Antigua by purchasing affordable, one-way flights on carriers like LIAT and Caribbean Airlines .

Our St. Barths Hotel Pick: Cheval Blanc Saint Barth

Caribbean Island-Hopping Itinerary #4: Charter a Private Boat

Drake's Seat, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Chartering a private sailboat or yacht to enjoy a Caribbean island-hopping vacation for a small group or family is about as dream-worthy (and splurge-worthy) as it gets. Check out family operations like BlueFoot Travel for direct bookings, or Ritzy Charters , which acts as a community marketplace for yacht and sailboat charters. You can browse a dizzying array of options to choose your perfect boat and crew with photos and reviews. It’s like booking your own private cruise.

The British Virgin Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands are some of the top places to sail in the Caribbean, thanks to excellent trade winds, crystal-clear blue water, and intricate coral reef systems. The B.V.I. and U.S.V.I. are also a lot closer together than many other island destinations, with travel times often under an hour. Whichever locations you decide to add to your yacht charter itinerary there are plenty of exciting things to do on every island.

One eight-day sample itinerary sets sail from St. Thomas where you’ll cruise to a beach in Trunk Cay, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Offshore you can snorkel at the Coral Reef Underwater Park Trail, which has underwater signs explaining the types of sea life you may encounter. On land, hike trails leading to old sugar plantations, or visit the snack bar on the beach. From there, sail to a friendly marina in Tortola with cafes, bars, shops, and restaurants, and then continue to a chain of southern islands in the B.V.I. Peter Island, the largest of the seven, is a popular spot for yachts and has a number of beautiful beaches for water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and scuba-diving amongst the offshore reefs.

Your next stop is The Baths on Virgin Gorda, a beach full of fascinating geological formations where you can swim, snorkel, and explore until you work up an appetite. Later, on Jost Van Dyke, you’ll find some of the best places on the trip for nightlife and live music. You’ll then visit the lush landscapes of St. John’s Virgin Islands National Park, which covers nearly all of the island. Hiking trails wind their way through the vegetation and down to the pebble beaches. There are even ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks along the Reef Bay Trail. Aside from its natural and historical attractions, you can also find nice shops for souvenirs and upscale restaurants. The trip culminates back in St. Thomas where you’ll bid your crew (and new friends) a final farewell.

Our U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel Pick: Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort

Additional Caribbean Island-Hopping Tips & Tricks

Beach at the COMO Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos

When planning your own Caribbean island-hopping itinerary, make sure to stay at least two nights at each destination. Though ambitious types might want to cross as many places (and Instagram posts) off their list as possible, you’ll be missing the point. Caribbean vacations are meant to be relaxing.

Once you get a price quote for any tour or private transfer, it’s worth the effort to call around and get additional quotes. Be sure to ask about extra charges like dock, airport, and takeoff fees.

Many flights between islands could be on a prop plane. When it comes to riding in a prop plane, don’t be shy to ask about safety. Any reputable operator should have safety information readily available, and won’t mind answering questions about their pilots. Fliers should ask if the pilot (especially if there is no co-pilot) has any health issues and if the operator (or the plane itself) has had any accidents or incidents in its history.

When chartering a boat or booking a tour, do ask about customizing the itinerary. Many companies will try to accommodate your preferences.

Pack smart! When it comes to multiple car transfers, ferries, and small planes, weight matters. Don’t expect to bring two weeks of stuff for a week of vacationing in the Caribbean. If need be, consider doing some laundry by hand while you’re in one place for a few nights. You’ll travel lighter and happier!

What people love about Island Hopping Tours in Greek Islands

The overall experience was nice with having private drivers, however a few things could have been explained a bit better. When arriving at the port, a gate assignment would have helped for the ferry. Maybe a link to the Sea Jet website? The motel in Mykonos was vary dated, with broken furniture, and light fixtures in the room. It was also a very long way from anything if you were walking. It was quite remote, and probably one I would have never considered as the port and restaurants/ shops were all 2.5 miles away.
I am glad that I took this package. It helped us have a stress free trip. Transfer from day 1 was seamless. I want to mention Kristos, the driver that picked us up from the airport who gave us a lot of useful information that kicked our trip to a good start. He served as a tour guide from the airport to the hotel. The hotels we stayed in were located near the must see places, especially our hotel in Athens. The person at the reception in all the hotels we stayed in was very helpful. George of Dot Travel was very prompt in answering my queries before our trip. It was a good package to take. We were satisfied.
Everything was excellent. The hotels, excursions, transfers to every location and the customer service. Communication was very effective. I highly recommend Tourradar.

Tour summary.

Edinburgh is a compact city and easy to explore on foot. We provide directions for 3 walking routes that show you different sides of the Capital city; a walk down the historical Royal Mile , a leafy riverside path to the Botanic Gardens that escapes the hustle & bustle of city life and a more energetic hike to Arthur’s Seat with the option to continue to an old Inn with lots of history.

Edinburgh boasts a great range of atmospheric old pubs and we steer you to a selection of our favourites.

The guide also includes some options for day trips around the surrounding area by car or bus / train.

We supply directions for two day trips from Edinburgh   by car  that cover:

  • East Lothian where you can visit some spectacular castle ruins, a distillery, pretty villages and embark on boat trips to Bass Rock.
  • West Lothian where you can visit Linlithgow Palace , Blackness Castle,   Hopetoun House  and some of the other sites used in the filming of “Outlander” .

Stopover in Edinburgh (but the tour plan can also be adpated for a start from Glasgow)

To maximise your time on Arran, we provide directions for a fast main road route to the Arran Ferry. The directions take you through Glasgow, so you could start the tour from this city too.

The ferry ride to Arran takes less than an hour, but when you arrive you will immediately sense the change of pace as you slip into “island mode”.

Driving Distance: ~86 miles from Edinburgh / ~40 miles from Glasgow

Stopover on Isle of Arran

Arran is often described as “Scotland in miniature” and it provides you with a great taste of all that Scotland has to offer.

The north of the island is defined by mountains with craggy peaks where eagles soar, whilst the scenery of the south is more rolling and fertile. Within a short distance you can experience the grand Brodick castle with palatial rooms, or the atmospheric ruins of Lochranza castle , a medieval stronghold that dates back to the times of King Robert the Bruce. The island has a wealth of Neolithic sites and we can guide you to standing stones in a timeless wild landscape.

The island also has two whisky distilleries, a brewery, a cheese factory, a thriving perfumery and lots of golf courses.

Driving Distance: ~56 miles

Sail from Arran to the Kintyre Peninsula and start the drive north to Oban. This is a road that we rate as one of the best scenic drives in Scotland . A highlight of this tour is Kilmartin Glen where you find a cluster of standing stones and mysterious burial chambers . We guide you to an Iron Age hill fort where you can relive the crowning ceremony of the Kings of Dalriada by standing in the “Footprint of Fealty”.

The route also takes you past a lovely botanic garden and we include the option of a detour to an easily accessed island where you can explore some very pretty villages of whitewashed cottages.

In Oban you will find a great choice of seafood restaurants and we would recommend that you spend the night here, but you could aim to take a late ferry to Mull.

The guide also gives information for taking a half day trip from Oban to the Isle of Kerrera where you can enjoy an easy walk to the hauntingly moody Gylen Castle .

Driving Distance: ~50 miles (plus a 30 min ferry crossing)

Stopover in Oban Area (OR take a late ferry to the Isle of Mull)

You need to stay a minimum of 2 nights on Mull as there is so much to be seen and you can’t rush around Mull as a lot of the roads are single track.

The highlights of a visit to Mull are the pretty village of Tobermory with its brightly painted houses, Duart castle which guards the Sound of Mull, the historical Iona Abbey and the “must see” Island of Staffa which inspired Mendelssohn to write a symphony. In addition to these famous attractions, we will guide you to the less known places where you can connect with the spirit of island life and enjoy the freedom of escaping the crowds.

Stopover on Isle of Mull

We provide 2 ferry route options for the return to the cities.

  • Via the Oban Ferry - From Oban, you can follow a direct route via Loch Awe  (Scotland's longest Loch) and Kilchurn Castle to Crianlarich, OR you can take a longer route that guides you north to travel through Glen Coe on the way to Crianlarich and the main roads back to the cities. Driving Distance:   ~90 miles / 118 miles (to Glasgow)
  • Via the Lochaline Ferry – This route option uses the shorter crossing from Mull to Lochaline, but it also requires you to take another short ferry crossing at Loch Linnhe. The advantage of this route is that it takes you into the region of Morvern which is a quiet area away from the mainstream tourist trail. You can stop for lunch at our favourite seafood restaurant before starting on the scenic drive through Glen Coe and across Rannoch Moor to Crianlarich. Driving Distance:   ~122 miles (to Glasgow)

If returning to Edinburgh , you have the opportunity to visit Stirling Castle.

And if heading to Glasgow , you can explore the shores of Loch Lomond where you might wish to stop for a short cruise on its waters.

Testimonials

I convinced my other half to get the Scenic Tour 4-5 Days guide (even though he very much wanted to do it all himself), and it was the best experience ever. In fact, ever since this trip, we're trying to re-create the experience. Of course, Scotland can hardly let anyone down, but this guide truly made it an adventure. We found so many hidden and not so hidden gems, and everything was perfectly laid out for us so that all we had to do was decide how much time we had and what we wanted to see next. I can't recommend it enough and wish more guides like this existed!

Excellent! We thought the information provided was fantastic and allowed us to see things I am sure we would have missed. Mike was very helpful in sending the itinerary through again for us when we had trouble with our downloads. Would definitely recommend this site. We have been travelling for a number of years and normally would just rely on the internet and books but decided to give this a go. So glad we did.

Secret Scotland is EXCEPTIONAL in providing guidance for itinerary planning and accommodation referrals for those wanting a self guided driving vacation in Scotland.... Simple to use.  Thorough in suggesting ‘must see’ venues. Complete - sites, restaurants, pubs and experiences.” That is how I would describe what they do and provide.  Exceptional accommodation recommendations. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

The itinerary Secret Scotland provided was a trip saver. We loved the suggestions for sight seeing, eating, and places to stay, but the best part was the detailed driving directions. Driving on the opposite side of the road from the opposite side of the car was a little easier without having to worry about how to get there! We will definitely use this service the next time we visit Scotland!

Secret Scotland's itineraries, accommodations guides, and other resources are incredible value with great attention to detail.  Their owners, Mike and Aury, are experienced and honest, and they helped us so much as we attempted to narrow down a very long list of things we hoped to do during our time in Scotland.  I feel so much more prepared for our trip and can now just look forward to our approaching vacation!

island hopping tour

We have just got back from an EXCELLENT holiday following the Borders to Orkney route suggestions. We can't say enough about how much the detailed information enhanced our experience in Scotland. We had a wonderful time seeing so many interesting sites that we would have passed by without your guide. Thank you so much.

These guys really are the best.  We used Mike's Flexi Days East to West itinerary last July and it was truly indispensable.  His itinerary is full of detail, including driving directions and options.  Mike is also very responsive if you have any questions.  We had such a wonderful time we are going back again this year, and we will be using his itineraries again for our planning.  I would also recommend his accommodations guide.

Just like pictures of Scotland can’t do justice to the magnificence of the actual landscape, words can’t do justice to the brilliance and sheer volume of work you put in your guide. The level of detail provided on each stopover sheet, in all the different itinerary options and on all the B&B features exceeded even my most crazy expectations.

island hopping tour

Mike and Aurey from Secret Scotland prepared a fantastic itinerary for us. It was a huge ingredient in the success and huge enjoyment that we got from our trip. It was absolutely worth every penny and there is no way we could have seen so much and so well without their itinerary. We felt like we belonged in Scotland, we knew what we were doing and what it all meant at every step. We recommend their services wholeheartedly. Scotland is such a marvelous place. Thank you Mike and Aurey... and we will be back!

PALAWAN: Paradise Found

by thepinay solobackpacker | Mar 22, 2016 | Palawan , Philippines | 0 comments

The sun is bestowing its early morning blessing; shimmering in the stunningly clear waters. Rainbow colored fish flurry the colossal coral plates that have risen from the seafloor. I swivel like a thrilled child while surveying the underwater glories. Parrotfish (Scaridae) and royal angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) glided by, damsel fish (Pomacentridae)  drift near large plate corals, Moorish idols (Zanclus cornutus) dash through rock fissures while clown fish (Amphiprioninae) hide in the waving tentacles of anemones.  This jovial hex continues for about half an hour, until my guide sends a gesture to ascend. Panting while swimming, I reach for the stairs and haul myself back to the boat.

“It was one of the best snorkeling experiences in my lifetime!” I exclaim to Leidy Ocampo, owner of Gamat Travel and Tours – a travel agency that run tours around Coron Island – who is with me on the vessel.  Blissfully situated in Palawan, Philippines, this isle harbors one of the best dive and snorkel sites in the country, boasting of 11 World War II Japanese boats wreck sites. Preservation of these bountiful reefs also means increased income to the locals through tourism.

Lakes of Enchantment

Coron has been dropping jaws for years. Here, karsts limestone massifs rise like sentinels above a beautiful blend of shamrock green and cobalt waters.  In 1998, the indigenous tribe of Tagbanua in Coron Island – ancestors of some of the oldest people in the Philippines – were awarded Certificate of Ancestral Domain Claim (CADC) No. 134, covering over 22,000 hectares of land and sea. This gave them the authority to manage and preserve the marine and land resources, and the right to regulate the entry of migrant settlers and organizations into the domain. Such power is imperative for the Tagbanua community to protect their land from exploitation and destruction caused by outsiders.

coronsmall-1

The Tagbanua people guarding Kayangan Lake welcome us warmly upon docking. A massive map is displayed before the stairs, rightfully flaunting Coron Island’s paradisiacal topography to tourists.  Here, tourists make a payment of Php 200 per person for entrance fees that goes to the Tagbanua community.

“There are 13 lakes in Coron, but only 2 have been opened to the public – Kayangan Lake and Barracuda Lake”, Ronald Abelian, a Tagbanau supervisor informs me. “We haven’t even seen most of them, as prayers and rituals are required before entering those lakes, since they are sacred places where spirits reside.”

coron64small-1

I make a quick uphill trek to the spot with the scenic view of Kayangan Bay – the one that usually grace the promotional Coron tourism ads. Getting the ‘I was here’ photo in this view deck is perhaps on every tourist’s bucket-list. I ask my guide politely to take my obligatory souvenir photo here. Finally, another quick trek downhill rewards me with the shamrock-colored Kayangan Lake draped by limestone hills.

“Kayangan in the local language of the Tagbanua people means “entrance”. It is the gateway to the other lakes here in Coron Island,” explains my guide Kuya Roger, an immigrant who hails from Mindoro, a neighboring island province of Coron. After we discuss this, two Tagbanua men onboard a bamboo raft paddle through the lake’s entrance, as if reinforcing the words of my guide.

Kayangan’s sheer beauty is jaw-dropping. Tourists usually frolic here for hours and leap into its deep clear water. Its water is dubbed as one of the cleanest in Southeast Asia. I sport my snorkeling gear and dive into the placid water. I see limestone karts submerged in the water leading to an eerie cave. Meanwhile, the other lake that is open to the public – Barracuda, is frequented by foreign divers. Though still lurking in the shadow of its larger neighbor – Kayangan, it is undeniably as enchanting.

Green Dreams

Coron’s paradisaical beauty is immortalized in videos and photos. Al Linsangan is among many photographers who have a love affair with these islands, he has some of the most riveting shots of the island that I’ve seen to date. In fact, his photo of Banol Beach in Coron Island has won in the landscape category of the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA 2014).  Linsangan focuses on environmental photography and videography. He stunningly portray images of landscapes, people, culture, arts, heritage sites and even marine life through his works, which have been featured in magazines, coffee table books, calendars and brochures.

coron24Small-1

Through my friend Emil Meron, who works for Linsangan, I met him and his wife in his office in Coron town. He runs Coron Galeri , an arts and crafts shop that promotes local artists’ handicrafts, arts and music.  He is also part of Tribu Calamianen, a Palawan indigenous cultural music group.

“I expanded my company to Calamianes Expeditions and Eco-Tours which highly promotes Corporate Social Responsibility at grassroots application. We are known for its low-priced tours where we involve local service groups”, he tells me. “I don’t have a boat or a van. I charter them and hire the boatman, the skipper, the tour guide, the driver and the cook. A minimum of seven families benefits in each eco-tour activity offer.”

Linsangan adopted coastal villagers from Barangay Lajala; the erstwhile fishermen engaged their boats into tourists’ compatible boats. “Today, after undergoing proper training on safety and basic handling of tourists, they are now service-oriented front liners with deep foundation on environmental protection and conservation,” he proudly shared.

coron12small-1

It was heartwarming to learn that there are people like Linsangan who has pro-active stance in promoting the best things about Coron and its culture. The shared leadership emphasizing community well-being over individual profit, balancing power within communities, and fostering traditional culture, conservation, and responsible stewardship of the land make Linsangan’s company stand out among several others sprinkled around Coron town.  After over a week, I left Coron confident that with people living there like Linsangan, actively promoting community-based tourism, there is a promise of a bright future for the island.

Affordable Island-Hopping in Croatia? What Could Go Wrong?

A 30-percent-off Black Friday sale on a cruise aboard a yacht meant off-season sailing and being prepared for the unexpected.

A view from a hill of a red-roofed town surrounding a harbor. In the foreground, the ruins of an ancient fortification wall follow the downward slope of a steep hill. And in the distance, beyond the harbor with its numerous small boats, is a string of small green islands.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

As Croatians tell the story , the Greek hero Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive on the Croatian island of Mljet. Visiting in May, I and six other sailors embraced the myth when the motor on our 54-foot yacht failed.

“Remember, Odysseus spent seven years on Mljet,” said Ivan Ljubovic, our captain. “We can do two nights.”

In the scheme of things, the clogged fuel filter that impeded our progress on a seven-night, island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik on a yacht — which the passengers helped sail — was minor. Though an engine, even on a sailboat, is vital for docking and sticking to schedules on becalmed days, most of my shipmates agreed that getting waylaid in a village with Roman ruins on a turquoise bay was an acceptable fate.

I had been resigned to what were, in my mind, worse inconveniences when I had signed up for the trip last November. Then, the tour operator G Adventures had put several trips on sale over the Black Friday weekend. Its best deals were in the off-season, which meant potentially chilly weather and closed restaurants and attractions. But leaving in late April for seven nights of island hopping at roughly $1,300 — after a 30 percent discount — was too tempting to pass up.

My cousin Kim agreed and we made plans to pack rain gear and meet in Split to test the budget waters.

‘Everything between is an adventure’

Little about the itinerary was published pre-departure and none of it was firm.

“Split and Dubrovnik are fixed,” said the captain, who would pilot the ship solo and double as our guide, on our first day. “Everything between is an adventure.”

It started with the Sauturnes, a handsome Kufner yacht with four snug guest cabins, four economical bathrooms where the retractable faucet doubled as a shower spigot, and a spacious galley. Our “crew,” a mix of Australians and Americans ranging from 18 to 75 — all of whom had also jumped on the promotional pricing — spent most of the time atop the boat, where foam mattresses invited sunbathing and a cockpit awning provided shade.

The weather, which turned out to be sunny and comfortably cool, was not our greatest concern. The G Adventures website had mentioned well-known islands, including beachy Brac and Vis , which played a convincing Greek idyll in the movie “Mamma Mia 2.” But since many places would be closed in the shoulder season, we would proceed, according to the captain, based on the dictates of the weather and conditions on shore.

Meals were not included, which meant finding open restaurants was critical. For shipboard breakfasts and lunches, we each chipped in 50 euros (about $54) for communal groceries, which we shopped for at local markets. At night, we would dine at restaurants; G Adventures advised budgeting $250 to $325 for the week, which was accurate, though we often splurged on Croatian wine (a carafe of house red averaged $15).

Small ports

After the frenzy of grocery shopping and moving into the bunk-bedded cabin Kim and I shared, we experienced the Zen of sailing as the ship set off on a sunny morning for 43-mile-long Hvar , the longest and purportedly sunniest island in Croatia.

Neighboring islands drifted past as the wind patterned the sea in shifting ripples and ruffles. A flock of shearwaters soared by at eye level.

Within a few hours, the ridgelines of steep Hvar appeared, revealing terraced lavender fields and olive orchards. Motoring down a long, narrow inlet, we arrived in Stari Grad , a village of stone homes with terra cotta roof tiles, as travelers had since 384 B.C., when Greek sailors from the island of Paros settled here.

Our mooring provided a front-row view of fishing boats and cafes animating the waterfront. Stari Grad’s attractions, including the Greek ruins of Faros and a 17th-century Venetian cathedral, had yet to open for the season, but we relished exploring the old quarter’s narrow lanes and deserted plazas.

From the waterfront, an aerobic 20-minute hike up a steep hill crowned by a giant white cross offered views over Stari Grad and the plains beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fourth-century agricultural fields, with stone walls circumscribing grapevines and olive orchards.

That evening, we visited them to reach Konoba Kokot , a farm restaurant that specializes in “peka,” a kind of barbecue in which meat cooks under an iron lid piled with hot coals. The family that runs it opened in the preseason, welcoming us with bracing shots of rakija, a local herbal liquor. At a long table under an arbor, we gorged on homemade goat cheese, wild boar pate and, from the hearth, roast lamb, veal and octopus with limitless jugs of red and white wine for 35 euros a person.

Starry nights

Small ships are unmatched at getting into small ports, but a yacht trip is also a little like camping, starting most mornings with D.I.Y. instant coffee. Marinas offered free bathhouses with showers.

Cool temperatures apparently deterred the celebrity-filled mega yachts, which are known to anchor in the town of Hvar on the south shore of Hvar island. Our captain declared it the “Mykonos of Croatia” as we motored by the port bustling with visitors carrying shopping bags and cones of gelato.

With clear weather in the forecast, we moored in an undeveloped cove east of town. The mooring belonged to the owners of Moli Onte restaurant, who ferried us to land on a motorized dingy, allowing us enough time before dinner to visit the fortress above Hvar and have an Ozujsko beer on St. Stephens Square, the largest in the region of Dalmatia.

Back on board, with no artificial light to wash out the night sky, we hit the upper deck for stargazing. As my shipmates peeled off to bed, I grabbed a blanket and beanie and bedded down under the stars for the evolving show, periodically waking to catch the drama of the moon rising, reflected in the still water.

Little Dubrovnik

Fingers of gray rock reached down to meet sloping vineyards along Hvar’s south coast as we departed for its neighbor, Korcula. On our longest day of sailing, five hours, I welcomed the chance to play first mate, manning the lines on the jib sail.

To break up the trip, Captain Ljubovic navigated to a quiet cove off the Peljesac Peninsula where the Caribbean-blue waters, cloudless sky and sandy bottom convinced us to jump in despite numbing sea temperatures.

Fifteenth-century walls ring the historic center of Korcula, earning it the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Past the stone gates carved with a winged lion representing the empire of Venice, which controlled much of the Adriatic after the 13th century, narrow alleys led to ornate churches and mansions. There was no better history trip than getting lost in the web of pedestrian lanes. Or so we told ourselves as we passed the purported home of Marco Polo, still closed preseason.

Along the seafront walls, restaurants served pizza and seafood under lights strung in the pines and we caught sunset from a former turret, now converted into Massimo Cocktail Bar , which requires patrons to climb a ladder to the rooftop, a caution against second rounds.

The most romantic port of the trip was also the rowdiest, at least in the marina, which was hosting a Polish sailing regatta. When I headed for the showers at 6 a.m. the next morning, I found a group still cheerfully dancing atop a yacht littered in empty booze bottles and crushed potato chips.

Marooned on Mljet

We left Korcula on strong 20-knot “jugo” or south winds and Captain Ljubovic unleashed the sails, saying “You paid for a sailing vacation, not a motorboat.”

As we tacked back and forth toward Mljet , the boat heeled at a queasy angle and we took face shots of ocean spray.

On Mljet, where the western end of the island is home to Mljet National Park , we rented bikes (10 euros) to ride a lung-busting route over the park’s mountain spine. On the other side, we cycled around a pair of inland lakes and took a boat trip to a 12th-century monastery built on an island in one of them (park admission, 15 euros).

Docked in the still sleepy town of Polace, we heard tales of high season, when up to 100 yachts anchor in the bay and members of the band U2 were once seen biking in the park. After a brief shower, the town glimmered at sunset and the restaurant Stella Maris welcomed us with grilled sea bass (25 euros) and prawns (20 euros).

“I’m so glad I chose this time, because I don’t do crowds,” said my shipmate Nova Hey, 46, of Sydney, who was traveling with her 18-year-old daughter.

In the morning, I had the trail to the peak of Montokuc to myself. The roughly three-mile round-trip hike reached one of the highest points on the island, a rocky knob with stunning panoramas shared by a family of feral goats.

Not long thereafter, the Sauternes’ engine refused to turn over, stranding us in a national park on a remote island with no mechanics.

Teeming Dubrovnik

The next morning, Captain Ljubovic jimmied a fix but it didn’t last long and the engine died again, this time just opposite a cave on Mljet that we joked had to be the refuge of Odysseus.

After a morning of light sailing, a mechanic from the mainland arrived by speedboat and within an hour we were motoring toward the Franjo Tudman Bridge that spans the inlet to the Dubrovnik marina where hot showers awaited.

“Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia,” said Captain Ljubovic as we spent the last of our pooled money, 70 euros, hiring a taxi van to get us to and from the walled heart of the ancient city about 15 minutes away.

With two large cruise ships in port, Dubrovnik was teeming with visitors and the price to climb the stone walls that encircle the city was a sticker-shocking 35 euros. (In the ensuing two days Kim and I would spend post-cruise in the city, we bought the more comprehensive Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros that included admission to the walls as well as several museums and public bus transportation.)

On our final evening, we measured the lack of crowds versus closed museums; perfect hiking weather versus swim-inviting water; ample dock space versus more restaurant choices — and felt we’d come out ahead sailing in the bargain season.

Croatia has steadily grown in popularity as a tourist hotspot, offering everything from crystal clear bays to cities crammed full of history dating back to medieval times. But with so much culture and coastline to choose from, it can be hard to decide which part of Croatia to visit first.

While Dubrovnik ’s Roman ampitheatres and Fort Bokar have gained fame from their appearances in Game of Thrones , the island of Hvar combines turquoise waters with a party scene to rival Mykonos or St Tropez. Meanwhile, foodies have a lot to say about Zagreb , which blends Eastern and Western European cooking styles with Mediterranean ingredients like olive oil and rosemary, as well as root vegetables and dumplings.

Cruising around the Adriatic sea is a great way to experience ancient walled cities filled with medieval architecture along with lush island gems like Mljet, Korcula, and Vis. All without having to pack and unpack or browse ferry timetables to travel between islands.

Whether you’re travelling as a family or want a romantic trip with a loved one, we’ve rounded up some top cruise options in Croatia.

Visit three UNESCO world heritage sites

Explore ancient architecture as well as golden sands with Sail Croatia

Sail Croatia offers the ultimate break for culture lovers, or anyone who enjoys sightseeing as much as they like sunbathing. The Elegance Cruise starts and ends in Split, where you can tour the Unesco heritage site of Diocletian’s Palace, which is one of the best preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world.

The route will take you north through the seaside town of Trogir, which is also Unesco-listed, before stopping in Sidenik where you can explore the Cathedral of St James. From there, you’ll be taken to Vodice to admire world-famous waterfalls before having beach days on the islands of Vis and Hvar.

Prices from £2,019pp including seven nights accommodation, all meals and drinks, daily swim stops, airport transfers and a tour manager. Departing 7 July 2024.

Get blown away by the intimate luxury of a twin-masted yacht

The SS Mendula only has 15 guest cabins

Experience the romance and glamour of a sailing yacht that only holds 30 passengers and six staff. Riviera Travel’s SS Mendula can easily be anchored in tiny ports, so all you have to do is skip off and start your day without the need to queue for a charter. Every day it will pull up in a different place for a swim spot, giving you the chance to enjoy unique places for a calming dip.

This cruise docks in two different places a day, so you can spend the morning in one place, return to the ship for lunch, and then arrive at a different port for some afternoon exploring. You’ll see more islands on this cruise than with other itineraries, stopping at Bol, Vis, Hvar, Korcula, Jesla, Milna and Trogir, as well as starting and ending in Split.

Prices from £1,999pp including seven nights accommodation, return flights, all meals and drinks and some guided tours. Departing 31 August 2024.

Savour food and wine tastings with fresh Mediterranean flavours

Experience new flavours and unexplored islands on a hidden gems tour

If trying new flavours and experiencing different dishes is what gets you excited about going on holiday, Cruise Croatia’s luxury hidden gems tour could be your ideal trip. You’ll sail on a small ship with a cruise director, captain and very talented chef who will take care of your every need. In Sibenik, you can experience local prosciutto tasting and visit a family-run winery on Krk. Not many cruises stop at Krk or Losinj on the North of the Dalmatian Coast, so this is a special trip.

Another highlight is that you’ll see the best of what each island has to offer since this cruise will set you up with a free expert local tour guide in every port. You don’t have to worry about working out what to do on each island, as you’ll be guided straight to each spot’s hidden gems. There’s also a Jacuzzi on the top deck so you can chill out after a day of sightseeing.

Prices from £1,921pp including seven nights accommodation, all guided tours, watersports, daily swim stops and Wi-Fi. Departing 21 June 2025.

Enjoy child-free travel and a gigantic floating spa

The 900-cabin Marella Explorer 2 has nine restaurants, 10 bars, a casino and spa

With Marella’s Adriatic Affair package, you can experience the old cities of Dubrovnik and Split, as well as the coastal charm of Rijeka. The eight-day cruise starts and ends in Dubrovnik where you can see the city’s old walls along with the Game of Thrones’ filming locations. In Rijeka, you can wander through the winding pedestrianised streets before taking a trip to the world-famous Plitvice National Park for breathtaking waterfalls. Once you get back on the boat, relax in a gigantic spa or choose from nine different restaurants and 10 bars, including a special Champagne bar. There are more than 900 cabins on this ship and night-time entertainment to cater for all tastes.

As this is an Adriatic cruise, rather than solely focused on Croatia, you’ll also get to experience ports in Montenegro and Slovenia on the Adriatic coast. The price includes return flights, making it a good value option compared to other cruises that cost around the same price without transfer options.

Prices from £1,029pp including flights, seven nights all-inclusive accommodation and entertainment. Departing 4 July 2024.

Beach hop and swim in secluded bays

Experince azure waters and unspoiled bays, guided by local experts

Some of Croatia’s best beaches are hidden from tourists who don’t have local knowledge, but you’ll get to experience these secluded bays and crystal clear waters on a cruise from Split to Dubrovnik with My Croatia Cruise. Along the way, you’ll stop at Trogir, Hvar, Brač, Vis and Elafiti where local guides will show you the best places to swim and sunbathe. In Vis, you’ll be taken into the blue cave, weather permitting, where you can take a dip in electric blue waters. Food on board features local produce, including oysters from the Pelješac peninsula and fresh fish.

Prices from £1,259pp including seven nights accommodation, all meals and drinks, all guided tours, historic building entry fees and wifi. Departing 29 June 2024.

Have a luxury family holiday on a budget

Adriagate offers wallet-friendly, half-board cruises suitable for all ages

While most cruises start at £1,000, Adriagate has options from £625 per person in October, or £825 if you want to travel in the summer school holidays in August. The downside is that this is a half-board trip, rather than all-inclusive, but this frees you up to enjoy some local cuisine whenever you stop. You’ll start and finish in Trogir, with stops including the islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis as well as the historical city of Dubrovnik.

There are no tour guides so you have the freedom to explore or relax depending on how the children feel that day. It’s a convenient way to island hop, without dragging everyone’s suitcases around.

Prices from £1,921pp including seven nights accommodation, all guided tours, watersports, daily swim stops and wifi. Departing 21 June 2024.

Iran flag and oil wells

Governments that achieve international pariah status typically face significant economic distress, eventually acquiescing to the demands of their own people or falling in an acrimonious overthrow.

But the Islamic Republic of Iran, encumbered by US and international sanctions and decades of pent-up domestic unrest, is no typical government.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Despite those sanctions against thousands of Iranian companies and citizens, the Islamic Republic has shown extraordinary resilience in its 45-year history — and keeps getting richer, with the Iranian economy officially doubling since President Biden took office in 2021, according to the state-run Tasnim News Agency.

The Post spoke to foreign policy experts in Washington, DC, about how Tehran is getting richer, and the role in which Biden’s tepid Iran policy has allowed this to happen.

In the past four years, Iran’s GDP surged 3-5%, with oil exports hitting a six-year peak in April.

The country’s crude exports in March averaged 1.61 million barrels per day , double the average of 775,000 barrels during Donald Trump’s presidency, according to tanker tracker data.

The IMF projects that 2024 will be the third consecutive year where Iran’s GDP outpaces that of the US, with Iranian national income expected to grow 12.1% between 2022-2024 compared to 6.1% in the US.

Tehran has also seen record-high non-oil exports year after year during Biden’s presidency, with IMF figures showing Iran’s export of electricity and techno-engineering services surging from $67 billion in 2020 to $120 billion in 2023.

Meanwhile, Tehran is tightening ties with China and Russia — including exports of at least 1,000 suicide drones and unmanned aerial systems worth millions of dollars to Moscow that have been critical for Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Tehran also continues to develop nuclear weapons, which when placed on ballistic missiles threaten not just Israel but could also reach America.

Recent figures by watchdog United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) found that since 2021, Iran sold a record $90 billion worth of US-sanctioned oil to countries like China and India.

Lisa Daftari

“China has kept the Iranian regime coffers full through oil sales,” said UANI policy director Jason Brodsky. The $90 billion of oil sales have real-world impact, Brodsky adds, “as they resource Tehran’s proxy and partner network’s lethal attacks against Israel and US interests.”

Chaos in the Middle East is likely to persist as Tehran’s oil revenues soar unabated. Hezbollah, on the brink of war with Israel, receives $700 million a year from its key patron in Tehran, according to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Meanwhile, Iran’s annual funding for Hamas last year surged from $100 million to about $350 million , according to an Israeli security source.

Donald Trump

Tehran’s oil revenues impact America directly; 32 of the 1,200 people killed by Tehran-sponsored Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 were American citizens. Iran-backed militias in Iraq, Syria and Jordan also launched deadly attacks on American forces more than 170 times since last October.

Biden’s Iran policy is woefully fanciful, according to Saeed Ghasseminejad, a senior Iran and economics advisor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). “Tehran is selling more oil because Biden decided to loosen the screw of US sanctions,” he added.

Drones

One example of Biden’s acquiescence came in June 2023 when the US granted Iraq a sanctions waiver to pay Iran $2.7 billion in natural gas and electricity debt, something that would have not been allowed under Trump.

Two months later, the White House granted Tehran access to $6 billion in oil assets frozen in South Korea in exchange for the release of five American hostages detained in Iran.

Restoring deterrence and enforcing oil sanctions have never been part of Biden’s Iran strategy, said Lisa Daftari, editor-in-chief of The Foreign Desk . “Even before getting into the White House, Biden signaled his interest in negotiating another nuclear deal with Tehran, which only served to boost the regime’s confidence.”

Saeed Ghassen

While the White House hasn’t provided Tehran actual sanctions relief — and has even levied new penalties on the regime — it has failed to rigorously enforce existing sanctions that prevent foreign nations and companies from doing business with the Islamic Republic, argues Ilan Berman, senior vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council.

“Currently, the US governmental agency tasked with interdicting Iran’s illicit oil trade, known as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), doesn’t have the funding to carry out seizures of Iranian oil shipments,” Berman said.

The lack of funding for HSI is why late last year Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) introduced the Iran Sanctions Enforcement Act to establish a $150 million fund to bankroll HSI’s future enforcement of sanctions against Iran’s illicit exports.

Iranian protestor

Those exports include plenty of illicit oil, which Tehran provides to China at steep trade discounts.

Tehran charges Beijing as little as $37 per barrel compared to the global average $75-85 in the past year, according to Iran International, an anti-regime media outlet.

Discounted Iranian oil is already an attractive proposition, but when the risk of trading that sanctioned oil is low, players like China see it as an opportunity too good to pass up.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), says there’s a clear link between strong sanction enforcement and the need for Iran to sell oil at a discount .

“At the height of sanctions [under Trump], this meant taking 50% off the top, but with the lifting and non-enforcement of sanctions, that discount has dropped to 15% and perhaps now to less than 5%.”

Raisi and Xi

The regime has also found ways to deliver heavily sanctioned oil undetected in international waters.

In May 2024, UANI discovered 416 foreign vessels surreptitiously involved in the illicit transfer of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products.

A frequent tactic employed by this ‘ghost armada’ to evade oil sanctions included “flag hopping,” where the ship repeatedly changed its flag to non-sanctioned national registries to avoid drawing attention.

Oil isn’t the only way Tehran is raising much-needed revenue.

Gabriel Noronha, a former special advisor for Iran in the US State Department, said that Tehran’s clerical leadership is taxing the Iranian public to subsidize its international terrorism, military adventurism and corrupt construction projects.

“Since 2021, the regime’s taxes collected from Iranians have soared over 400%, and now account for more than half of Iran’s budget.”

Iranian missiles

The result: Ordinary Iranian citizens are struggling economically and they know their government isn’t going to help.

That’s one reason why the country has recently been engulfed by the “Hamster Kombat” crypto craze, an app promising desperate Iranians to earn redeemable points and cash by completing in-app tasks.

Noronha added that 60% of Iranians live under the poverty line not because of US sanctions, which primarily impact the regime’s ability to fund terrorism, but because “the regime doesn’t care about investing in education, infrastructure, water development, or any of the advanced economic sectors needed to take Iran into the economic future like its neighbors in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.”

Ilan Berman

Within a month of entering the Oval Office, in February 2021, Biden repudiated Trump’s Iran strategy and announced his intention to negotiate with Iran a return to the 2015 Obama-era nuclear deal.

The Biden administration’s policy of quiet diplomatic compromise and “maximum deference” to Iran represented a sharp reversal of the aggressive “maximum pressure” strategy adopted by former President Trump. His administration sanctioned Iran’s supreme leader’s office, the IRGC and Central Bank to curtail the regime’s nuclear program and financing of regional terrorism.

State Department figures from April 2019 found that the Trump administration, which exited the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, designated more than 970 Iranian entities and individuals in more than 26 rounds of sanctions — the most implemented in any presidential term.

As a result, more than 20 countries that had been regular purchasers of Iranian oil zeroed out their imports.

Hezbollah

Detractors of US-imposed sanctions contend that those trade restrictions harm Iranian citizens already crippled by inflation and high unemployment more than they weaken the regime.

“Without proper investments, the Iranian economy may not collapse in the way that the sanctions proponents desire, but it will be deprived of its full potential,” said Trita Parsi, executive vice president at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

Parsi added that sanctions typically impose maximum pain immediately after their imposition, “but after a while, the target economy adjusts and finds a new equilibrium. Iran has not been an exception.”

October 7th attack

But for Andrew Ghalili, a senior policy analyst at the National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFDI), the only language Tehran understands is aggression rather than constraint, adding that when the US has historically appeased Tehran, it hurt Iranian people and harmed American interests.

NUFDI data show that executions in Iran, the regime’s military expenditure and its nuclear weapons program all increased significantly when Biden and Obama appeased, rather than sanctioned, the regime.

The clerical leadership never spends its profit from oil exports on ordinary Iranian citizens. Ghalili cited Iran’s military expenditure as a pertinent example, “which sunk to roughly $3 billion in 2020 and is now above $10.3 billion — all of this is occurring while the regime also escalates its brutalization of the Iranian people.”
