Travel trailers with bunk beds are the perfect solution to the problem of having a bed for everyone. Bunk beds can also be more convenient than converting a dinette into a bed each night. Another nice perk of bunk beds is that they allow children to have their own space to store their clothing, mobile devices, and toys away from the living area.

We have attended many RV Shows and dealerships all across the country to tour, review, and rate these travel trailers. We have also read many reviews and comments from our subscribers.

Our guide to the 10 best travel trailers with bunk beds will help you find the perfect travel trailer. We focused on travel trailers with bunk beds that weigh less than 7,000 lbs because these units are perfect for weekenders, part-timers, and even full-time families road-schooling their kids across America.

What Size Campers are 7,000 lbs.?

What Size Camper are Travel Trailer With Bunk Beds Under 7,000 lbs.

The size of campers that are 7,000 pounds ranges from the upper 20 feet to low 30 feet in length. They usually have tandem axles and can be found with or without a single front room slideout. It’s rare to see one with two entry doors, but they exist. The average height of a travel trailer at this length and weight is between 10-11 feet and 6.5 feet inside.

RV manufacturers make some using the stick-and-tin conventional method using a wood frame and corrugated aluminum sidewall shell, like the CrossRoads Zinger Lite above. Others use the laminated method with aluminum tube framing and flat-paneled fiberglass sidewalls, where components are sealed to the panels with heat and a clear coating.

Travel trailers have the most popular floorplan variations at this length and weight since consumers find them the ideal size. In recent years, the best RV floorplans for families favor full-size bunks over twins. Murphy beds outsell permanent beds because they’re great space savers.

Other features in campers that are 7,000 lbs. include:

  • Either standard or U-shaped dinettes.
  • 8–10 cu. ft. Refrigerators
  • Multiple LED TVs
  • RV outdoor kitchens
  • Wet, dry, and full-width bathrooms
  • Massive storage space
  • Prep for data, satellite, solar, and other inputs

10 Best Travel Trailers with Bunk Beds: Under 7,000 LBS.

A lightweight travel trailer with bunk beds is the perfect compromise in terms of affordability and sleeping space. Here are some of the best the market has to offer, with more than enough capacity for your family and guests.

  • GVWR: 7,728 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 728 lbs

The L-shaped kitchen adds to the interior living space and features more counter space, especially if you are cooking inside and outside. The large awning extends over the cooking appliances outside as well, so you can enjoy cooking on a hot summer day without blistering in the heat.

2. Coachmen Freedom Express 22SE

Coachmen Freedom Express 22SE Exterior

✅ Despite the size constraints, it comes with a full bathroom that includes a sizeable tub

⛔ Kitchen counter space is a little limited

  • Length: 24.8′
  • UVW: 4,336 lbs
  • CCC: 1,840 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,176 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 576 lbs

It’s not often that you get a travel trailer with bunk beds that can sleep eight and has zero slides. The Coachmen Freedom Express 22SE proves you can do a lot with a little. Plus, it features a lightweight design, so you won’t need a small Army tank to haul it around.

The double-over-double bunks sit right next to a small but full bathroom, with a large enough dinette to support a large family that likes to eat their meals together. With pass-through storage, nearly a ton of cargo-carrying capacity, and a queen Murphy bed, neither space nor weight is limiting.

3. East To West Della Terra 255BHLE

East To West Della Terra 255BHLE Exterior

✅ Incredible cargo carrying capacity with plenty of storage options throughout

⛔ The lip/step-up to the couch is a tripping hazard until you get used to it

  • UVW: 5,993 lbs
  • CCC: 3,447 lbs
  • GVWR: 9.440 lbs

In fact, get-togethers will never be too constrictive, and you get all of this in a sub-three-ton travel trailer.

There’s no exterior kitchen, but the exterior LP quick-connect will get you started with exterior cooking appliance options. However, cooking inside is a breeze as well, with the L-shaped counter offering plenty of space to cook for large gatherings.

4. Heartland Pioneer 250BH

Heartland Pioneer 250BH Exterior Travel Trailer with Bunk Beds

✅ AM/FM IRV Technologies Command Center

⛔ Limited countertop space

  • Length: 29′ 9″
  • UVW: 5,175 lbs
  • CCC: 1,693 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,900 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 735 lbs

The Heartland Pioneer 250BH is a slick-looking travel trailer with bunk beds, especially if you opt for the one with those eye-catching, vertical graphics on the entryway. It also happens to be a massive sleeper, sleeping up to ten tired souls at once.

It doesn’t match the CCC of some of the other RVs on this list, but it’s still a respectable 1,693 lbs, which should be enough to hit the road with a large group of family or friends. The double bunks are always a nice touch, especially when situated next to a full bathroom.

5. Airstream Flying Cloud 30 FB

Airstream Flying Cloud 30 FB Exterior

✅ Features a full rear office for those who need to work remotely while on the road

⛔ TV is positioned sideways from the couch and dinette

  • Length: 30.8′
  • UVW: 6,557 lbs
  • CCC: 2,243 lbs
  • GVWR: 8,800 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 903 lbs

The timeless, classic aesthetic appeal of the Airstream remains ever-present—only this time, there’s an office within that shiny, aluminum shell. No, it’s not like a luxury office you might find in a condo or even in your own residential home. However, it’s clearly an office space with all of the amenities you expect in such an environment.

Even with that unique and rare addition, the Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB has enough remaining space to sleep up to 9 people. They even found room to install some closets and wardrobes, over a ton of storage capacity and spaces and a full bathroom. Not bad at all, especially for working families on the move!

6. r-pod RP-203

r-pod RP-203 Exterior

✅ The small slide and Murphy bed do a fantastic job of maximizing the living space throughout

⛔ Air conditioner is optional, not a standard feature

  • Length: 25′
  • UVW: 5,169 lbs
  • CCC: 2,556 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,725 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 725 lbs

One of three floorplans, the r-pod-203 comes with a dual-battery rack (for those who prefer going off-grid or boondocking), rotocast tanks, seamless countertops, a tire pressure monitoring system, a GE refrigerator, and enough interior space to sleep up to eight people.

It helps that the slide includes the dinette, significantly boosting the living space through the kitchen and into the entertainment space. The 60 x 74 Murphy bed only adds to the spacious, daily feel of living in the 203. Even better, this puppy can hold over a ton of extra gear, so feel free to pack it down on your next adventure.

7. Riverside Retro 240BH

Riverside Retro 240BH Exterior Travel Trailer with Bunk Beds

✅ Unique and captivating retro look, on the inside and the outside

⛔ Counter space is pretty limited

  • Length: 27′ 5″
  • UVW: 4,260 lbs
  • CCC: 3,120 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,380 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

The retro look has been gaining steam in recent years, and you can have a Riverside Retro at an affordable price, with a small weight footprint, and enough interior space and accommodations to sleep 6. That’s more than enough for a midsize family to hit the road comfortably.

For a travel trailer with bunk beds, considering its light weight, the cargo carrying capacity is immense, at over a ton and a half. If you’re the adventurous sort, you can spend significant time packing this RV down with all of the outdoor gear you can imagine and your personal effects.

8. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX Exterior

✅Ton of cabinetry and space optimization throughout

⛔ Small CCC for a 5-person sleeper

  • Length: 21′ 6″
  • UVW: 3,144 lbs
  • CCC: 726 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,870 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs

As a lightweight travel trailer with bunk beds, the Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX , from the outside, doesn’t look like it can possibly hold all that it does. However, step inside, and you’ll find the opposite of what you might expect, with bunk beds, moderate counter space, and even a queen-sized bed.

You can opt for either the dinette or dual recliners, the latter of which are very comfortable. As a light sleeper, the 16BHX is a fantastic option for smaller family sizes or even for couples that like to host guests from time to time.

9. Gulf Stream Gulf Breeze 246BH

Gulf Stream Gulf Breeze 246BH Exterior

✅ Outside mini-kitchen includes a fridge, slide-out grill, countertop, and drawers

  • Length: 30′ 4″
  • UVW: 5,903 lbs
  • CCC: 1,707 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,610 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 610 lbs

The interior of the lightweight, Gulf Stream Gulf Breeze 246BH is all bright aesthetics, which adds to the spacious feel of an already sizeable living space. The front bedroom is a private room; even the double bunks include curtains you can draw on the top and bottom.

With enough room for eight to sleep, you can even bring your four-legged friend along for the ride. Below the fridge, you’ll find a special dog dish drawer that’s highly convenient. The CCC is moderate, with pass-through storage, hidden storage beneath the bed, and plenty of cabinetry throughout.

10. Keystone Bullet 211BHSWE

Keystone Bullet 211BHSWE Exterior Travel Trailer with Bunk Beds

✅ Water-resistant, Hyperdeck flooring throughout

⛔ Oven is pretty tiny for a kitchen that needs to produce for up to eight people

  • Length: 26.1′
  • UVW: 4,370 lbs
  • CCC: 2,227 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,597 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 470 lbs

The last travel trailer with bunk beds is as good as the first. The Keystone Bullet 211BHSWE features a three-year warranty on the exterior, which is always a good thing. Some significant tech also went into this model, including the Hyperdeck flooring, Blade A/C ducting system, and the SolarFlex package.

The interior is fairly spacious, with a queen bed up front, double bunks in the back, optional storage in place of one of the bunks, and a spacious bathroom that includes a tub. There’s not much counter space to work with in the kitchen. However, you also have the exterior kitchen when it’s time to cook big meals for a large family.

Can Adults Sleep On RV Bunk Beds?

For the most part, adults can sleep on RV bunk beds, especially when they are double beds. Most doubles are about 74″ long, which is enough for someone 6′ 2″ tall to stretch completely out. Double bunks are also wide enough to move around without falling off the bunk.

Twins are a little more difficult, but it can still be done. Of course, a grown adult may be a little more uncomfortable in a twin bunk, depending on size, weight, and height. For those adults out there who can literally sleep anywhere, bunks are far from an issue.

Can I Pull a 7,000 lb Travel Trailer With Bunk Beds?

Can I Pull a 7,000 lbs. Travel Trailer With Bunk Beds

You can pull a 7,000 lbs. travel trailer with bunk beds with a full-size SUV or half-ton pickup truck. The examples we presented have a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds. This is different from an RV with a dry weight (a.k.a. Unloaded Vehicle Weight/UVW) of the same weight.

An RV with a 7,000 lbs. dry weight means that the coach weighs that much when it’s empty. When you fill it with fresh water, your camping gear, food, clothing, and passengers, the total Gross Vehicle Weight (filled-up weight) could be as high as 9,000 pounds or more.

The GVWR is the RV manufacturer’s rating (and various governing agencies) that tells everyone what the safest maximum weight the rig can hold (the keyword is “safe”). If you have a tow vehicle with a 7,700 lbs. towing capacity, realistically, which one of these RVs do you think would be the safest for you to hitch up?

Here are some recommendations on the best SUVs to tow a travel trailer with bunk beds under 7,000 lbs.

The Best Way To Replace Your Pathetic RV Bunk Mattresses

(Camp Addict does NOT accept payment from any company to review or endorse their products.)

By Kelly Beasley

When you head out on the open road seeking new adventures, doesn't everyone coming along deserve a comfortable bed? Yes, even the kids need a good night's sleep.

Yet RVs are notorious for the terrible mattresses that are standard equipment. Especially RV bunk mattresses.

Why Are RV Bunk Mattresses So Bad?

Usually, the mattress for a camper bunk is nothing more than cheap stuffed foam particles sandwiched between two layers of extremely cheap foam.

They are less than enticing and feel like barely more than a soft piece of plywood to sleep on.

Getting a replacement mattress for RV bunks is cheap and relatively easy.

That said, you are probably here because you already know you want to purchase new ones.

Let's cover all you need to know to replace your travel trailer bunk mattress or motorhome bunk mattresses with a quality mattress that will greatly increase comfort levels!

What is an RV Bunk Bed Mattress For Campers?

RV manufacturing companies  have a job to fit as much into a small space as possible while keeping the camper weight to a minimum.

This means that the kids' bunks are going to be relatively small.  You aren't going to have twin-sized beds with an innerspring mattress in the recreational vehicle.

Therefore, you will have smaller-than-twin-sized places for them to sleep, usually in bunk form, to save space.

Another space-saving feature may be that the corners are angled. This also saves space.

So, a camper bunkhouse mattress most likely will be a very light, odd-shaped, low-quality place for your smaller sleepers when you're RVing.

Is an "RV Bunk" Mattress a Certain Size?

When it comes to RV bunk mattress size , dimensions are all over the chart. There are so many sizes  and shapes out there that there's no need even to list 'common sizes' here.

There is no 'certain size' that bunks come in.

If a manufacturer advertises that they sell RV bunk mattresses, they will likely be in different dimensions than the next manufacturer.

Bunk mattresses all vary in:

The only way to know your RV bunk mattress size is to measure with a measuring tape and also be sure to measure the size of the platform the mattress goes on.

Otherwise the replacement bed may be less than a perfect fit.

The old mattress might have warped and somewhat shriveled, shoddy as they make them.

Measuring the platform, or space the bed fits into, is the best way to ensure the new mattress is the correct size.

Should a Camper Bunk Mattress Be a Certain Thickness?

Thickness is an essential factor to consider when shopping for a new mattress for bunk beds in a camper.

Why? Because usually, there's another bed not too far above the bottom, and there's a ceiling not too far from the top bunk.

If you get too thick of a mattress, it might become impossible for the person to turn over.

Also, especially for the top bunk, you don't want the mattress higher than the guard rails that keep a kid from rolling off.

So keep these two things in mind when ordering new camper bunk mattresses for your motorhome or travel trailer.

Why are Some RV Twin Bunk Bed Mattresses So Uncomfortable?

RV manufacturers make RVs as cheaply as possible to increase their profit margin.

The 'mattresses' they install are no exception.

They also figure the mattresses are only used once or twice a year, which may ring true.

But the quality and durability of most bunk mattresses is insanely poor.

Bunk bed mattresses for campers are often made from the cheapest and thinnest of foam and may not even last a week.

How Much Do RV Bunk Mattresses Cost?

You can get a cheap replacement camper bunk mattress for about  $200.

You'll find better quality ones that will last many trips for about $530 - $650 .

You can certainly spend more, but these prices were pulled (at time of original article publication) from Mattress Insider and Tochta for roughly a 38" x 74" bunk mattress for RV.

You might be able to make your own replacement RV bunk mattress out of foam for cheaper.

But then it probably won't be too much better than the one that came with the camper.

Bunk Bed Mattress Considerations- Buy Smart!

Don't just buy any ol' mattress. Especially if you are on a budget, you might consider how often you will use the mattress.

If you only use it once or twice a year, you may be able to get by with a cheaper mattress or get a topper for the current mattress.

You may not need a memory foam mattress or a hybrid mattress with all the bells and whistles, but you do want to be careful to buy from a reputable manufacture so you limit exposure to chemicals and other harmful substances .

Don't forget to consider how thick you can go without going over the protective rails.

You also don't want to lose too much space to either be able to sit up in bed or roll over.

Remember, if you get a foam mattress for RV bunk, you can cut it down if it's a touch too large.

Where To Buy Sheets For Your RV Bunk Beds

You can buy RV bunk sheets at these companies:

  • Mattress Insider -  multiple sizes/dimensions to choose from.
  • Tochta -  They offer a few standard sizes (may not fit your bunk) and the option to custom order different sizes .
  • Camping World -  They have 'bunk' sizes but not many options for sizes. So if your bunk fits the measurements of their 'bunk' sheets, you lucked out!

If your bunk is anywhere close the size of a traditional twin, you may be able to make regular twin sheets work. This size of sheets can be purchased at any home goods store.

Where To Buy an RV Bunk Topper

Mattress Insider is one of the only places we have seen toppers specifically built to fit an RV bunk size.

However, if you get a foam topper, the beauty is you can cut it to size.

If you have an oversized one for the RV twin bunk mattress, cut it down to fit!

This will save you a lot of money from buying a custom-sized RV bunk mattress topper .

How to Measure for a Properly Fitted RV Bunk Mattress

Measuring for a properly fitted RV bunk mattress is not rocket science, but there is one thing to consider.

We recommend measuring the bed itself and the platform it sets on.

Because, depending on many factors, the mattress may be smaller than its intended area.

You may be able to go a few inches bigger with your new mattress.

Measure the platform area and use that over the mattress size when ordering your RV bunk mattress replacement.

What if my RV Bunk Mattress Has a Cut Corner?

Some companies can make you a custom-made mattress for RV use at a reasonable price.

Specifically, and the best we have seen regarding website navigation, an excellent long-standing company, American-made, and excellent customer support, Tochta wins hands-down.

They can do radius, angle, and notch corners.

The price is shown instantly when customizing your RV bunk mattress with cut corner .

We cannot recommend Tochta any higher for your new bunk mattress for camper, custom or not.

Visit Tochta's mattress builder and see what they can do for you.

If you want a more affordable option, Mattress Insider also offers you the ability to custom build a bunk mattress, so you can  check out their mattress builder page .

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are rv bunk mattresses.

RV bunk bed mattresses come in every size imaginable. Some even have cut corners.

Typically they range from 20 to 42 inches in width and 74 to 80 inches in length.

The only way to correctly size yours is to measure the platform it sits on.

How do I make my RV bunk more comfortable?

If you don't want to buy a whole new mattress, consider getting a mattress topper for your RV bunk bed mattress.

You might even be able to get away with using ONLY a topper as your camper bunk bed mattress if it's thick enough.

Don't fret if you can't find a topper that is the right size for your camper bunk mattress.

You can always get a bit too large one and cut it, as they are made out of foam.

Mattress Insider offers a wide variety of topper sizes, so they may have one that fits your bunk.

Mattresses for RV bunk beds are almost all individual in their dimensions and materials.

RV manufacturers tend to put the cheapest and worst-quality beds in for bunks.

Therefore, almost every new RV owner needs to replace the mattresses so that their kids can sleep comfortably at night.

Luckily, they are easy to replace. Simply measure all three dimensions and cut corners if applicable, and put in your order!

Some people make their own mattress out of decent quality foam.

Whatever you decide, everything you need to know to replace your junk bunk mattress is here on this page.

How to Find the Right RV Mattress for Bunk Beds

RV Mattress for Bunk Beds

To find the right RV mattress for bunk beds that provides cozy comfort for a good night’s rest, you need to consider the unique size requirements, materials, and design factors for RV bunk bed mattresses. The confined sleeping space of most recreational vehicle bunks requires specially-made mattresses that fit precisely within the limited dimensions. An RV often vibrates and shakes while driving, so the mattress also needs to be durable and supportive.

The key is finding a high-quality bunk bed mattress designed to maximize comfort in the compact RV environment. This guide covers how to select the ideal mattress for RV bunk beds based on size, thickness, materials, price, brand comparisons and other factors. We’ll also look at tips for customsizing mattresses, toppers, sheets and bedding for a perfect fit. Use this information to help choose mattresses ready for restful slumber during family travels.

Key Takeaways

  • Look for custom short queen or RV twin size mattresses to precisely fit RV bunk dimensions.
  • 6-8 inch thickness provides sufficient cushioning. Prioritize conforming memory foam.
  • Match mattress firmness to sleeper preferences and needs for back support.
  • Breathable bamboo, microfiber or cotton covers stay cool. Polyurethane resists moisture.
  • Expect to pay $200 to $500 for a high-quality long-lasting RV bunk mattress.
  • Measure carefully and find mattresses with exact sizing to properly fit the bunk bed space.

How Are RV Bunk Bed Mattress Sizes Different

Table of Contents

How Are RV Bunk Bed Mattress Sizes Different?

One of the first steps in choosing a new RV bunk mattress is to precisely measure the length and width of the available bunk bed space. RV bunks often require custom mattress sizes tailored shorter and narrower to properly fit. Here are some common bunk bed mattress sizes to look for:

  • Short Queen  – 60″ x 75″ for shorter compact bunk spaces
  • RV Twin  – Typically 28-30″ wide x 75″ long specifically for RV bunks
  • RV XL Twin  – For extra long bunks approximately 39″ x 80″
  • Short King  – Perfect split fit for opposing RV bunk beds
  • Custom Cut  – Any custom mattress dimensions you need for a flawless fit

Many standard home mattress sizes like queen and twin won’t correctly fit the confined RV bunk sleeping space. Be sure to verify your exact needed measurements before ordering. Manufacturers like Denver Mattress Company, Lippert Components and mattressmakers.com offer RV-specific mattresses cut to size. If you have to size down, look for models with thick comfort layers to prevent that “sinking in” feeling around the edges.

Determine the Right Thickness and Materials

Beyond precise sizing, also evaluate mattress thickness and material components when selecting the best RV bunk mattresses. Key guidelines include:

  • Thickness  – Look for a 6 to 8 inch profile for sufficient cushioning and support in the limited bunk space.
  • Memory Foam  – Conforming memory foam layers provide comfortable contouring and alleviate pressure points.
  • Support Foam  – Polyurethane or latex foam bases give shape and stability. High density prevents sagging.
  • Covers  – Breathable bamboo rayon or cotton covers stay cool. Polyurethane coated fabrics resist moisture and stains.
  • Quality Materials  – Higher grade foams and fabrics last longer despite heavy RV use and withstand humidity and heat.

Test different material combinations to find the right balance of plush comfort and adequate support for your needs. Softer foam can exacerbate sinkage on narrower mattresses.

Choose the Best Firmness Level

Choose the Best Firmness Level

Mattress firmness determines comfort and support. The right firmness for your RV bunk depends on:

  • Personal Preference  – Soft, medium or firm feel based on your sleeping style.
  • Body Type  – Lighter sleepers need less firmness; heavier people need more support.
  • Sleep Position  – Side sleepers do better on softer mattresses, back sleepers need firmer support.
  • Bunk Design  – Upper bunks can handle softer foam without sag. Firmer lower bunks prevent “falling in” feel.
  • Age  – Growing kids are better suited to medium firmness for developing spines.

Test different firmness levels when shopping to discover the ideal mattress feel for each bunk occupant based on their needs and preferences. Adjustable air mattresses allow custom firmness.

Comparing construction quality, materials, sizing accuracy and warranties can help narrow down the many bunk mattress choices.

Tips for Proper Sizing and Fit

One of the most important factors in selecting a replacement mattress for your RV’s bunk beds is achieving a precise sizing fit within the confined bunk space. RV bunk mattresses must conform exactly to the narrower and shorter dimensions typical in most recreational vehicles. Getting the size right ensures your new mattress will fit flawlessly into the bunk without uncomfortable gaps or awkward overhang. Here are some tips for nailing the ideal mattress sizing:

First, carefully measure the interior length, width and depth of the bunk bed platform using a tape measure. Don’t rely on the advertised mattress size or assume a standard twin or queen will fit. The actual interior bunk dimensions matter most. Measure side-to-side for width and top-to-bottom for length. For depth, measure from the bunk platform to the ceiling to ensure enough mattress thickness is allowed. Record your numbers.

When ordering, check with the manufacturer if the mattress dimensions can slightly exceed the bunk bed’s dimensions. Having an extra inch or two of mattress overhang on one or more sides can help reduce the sensation of “falling in” that occurs with undersized mattresses. A little overhang provides a sense of security.

If there are concerns about significant mattress compression over time, consider adding 1 to 2 inches to the width and length when ordering. This provides a buffer as the materials settle and compress. Just ensure the extra size doesn’t obstruct easy entrance and exit from the bunk. You want snug but not squeezed.

In situations where you have to size down to find RV-appropriate mattress dimensions, try to maximize thickness/depth as much as clearance allows to make up for the reduced length and width. At a minimum, aim for at least 6 inches thick but ideally 8 inches or more. This ensures some cushioning is still provided.

For maximum size flexibility, an adjustable air mattress may be the best solution for tricky bunks. Air mattresses allow you to inflate or deflate to precise dimensions required for an ideal fit. Like a customizable mattress alternative when uncommon sizes are involved. Just be sure to measure at your desired firmness.

Finding a mattress company that can manufacture a custom-cut mattress in any size you need is tremendously helpful for RVs. There are many mattress makers that specialize in boat, RV and other specialty vehicles. Choose a retailer that offers made-to-order mattresses in the exact size required.

After the custom-sized mattress arrives, carefully test it within the actual bunk beds before finalizing your purchase. Verify that the sizing is perfect and the mattress fits like a glove in the available bunk space. A trial run identifies any issues to correct before permanent installation.

Dialing in the exact mattress dimensions required for your particular RV bunks takes a bit of effort but pays dividends in maximized comfort over years of use. Precise sizing avoids uncomfortable gaps, slipping, and compression that ruins restful sleep. Follow these tips to achieve mattress sizing nirvana!

Consider Adding a Mattress Topper

Consider Adding a Mattress Topper

For many RVers, adding a mattress topper can be a great way to inexpensively improve the comfort of existing RV bunk mattresses or fine tune the feel of a new mattress. Toppers provide an extra layer of plushness and support right on top of the mattress surface. Benefits of using mattress toppers on RV bunk beds include:

  • Providing a softer overall surface feel without having to replace the entire bunk mattress. Foam or feather toppers gently cushion pressure points.
  • Adding cooling relief during warm weather through use of breathable latex foam or gel-infused swirl foam toppers that promote airflow and dissipate heat.
  • Increased pressure point relief and cushioning from conforming memory foam toppers or plush feather beds for aches and pains.
  • The ability to customize mattress firmness by selecting different topper materials like soft memory foam or firmer bamboo.
  • Increasing the overall mattress thickness in situations where the existing bunk mattress depth is inadequate or sagging. A thick topper compensates.
  • Portability to use your comfortable preferred topper easily across different beds and bunks in the RV for maximum versatility.

When selecting a mattress topper for RV bunk beds, choose a size that fits the mattress dimensions precisely or opt for a slightly oversized version to minimize gaps. Standard topper thickness is 2 to 3 inches to adequately supplement the mattress. Overall, adding a high-quality mattress topper is an easy way to make a too firm mattress feel more luxurious.

Use Appropriately Sized Sheets and Bedding

Along with having properly sized RV mattresses and toppers, it’s important to outfit the bunk beds with well-fitted sheets and bedding linens. This finishes off the beds with a tidy wrinkle-free look. Since RV mattresses often deviate from standard mattress sizes, tailor-made RV sheets are required. Here are some tips:

  • For hard-to-find mattress dimensions like short queen or RV twin, check specialty bedding stores that offer RV, boat, camper and caravan sheets. They stock sizes not found at regular stores.
  • Bring the RV bunk mattresses’ exact length, width and depth measurements when sheet shopping to accurately match required sizes. Leaving guesswork often results in incorrect sizing.
  • Look for fitted sheets with extra deep pockets that can snuggly accommodate today’s thicker mattresses and mattress toppers. Minimum 14 inch depth is good.
  • For narrow yet extra long RV bunk mattresses, try fitted sheets sized for twin XL beds rather than standard twins that may be too short. The extra length is key.
  • Coordinating bunk bed sheet sets can add color, patterns and visual interest to outfit the often confined bunk space.
  • Mattress encasements that fully wrap around the mattress create a smooth surface underneath sheets for a wrinkle-free tidy look.

Taking the time to find fitted RV sheets purpose-made for the specific mattress dimensions ensures bedding layers properly onto the mattress without awkward gapping or looseness that causes frustration. Complete the look with plush blankets and comforters sized right for the bunks.

Typical Price Ranges for RV Bunk Mattresses

What can you expect to budget when purchasing a new mattress for your recreational vehicle’s bunk beds? Here are typical price ranges:

  • $100 to $250 – Basic foam bunk mattresses with minimal features and thinner profiles.
  • $250 to $400 – Medium-range models with thicker foam, gel infusion or memory foam.
  • $400 to $600 – High-end mattresses from premium brands with maximum features and materials.
  • $50 to $250 – Mattress toppers to improve existing mattress comfort and feel.
  • $50 to $150+ – Fitted sheets sized specifically for RV bunk dimensions.

Consider how frequently the RV is used and bunk needs to determine if a luxury mattress is worthwhile or if budget foam does the trick. Prioritize quality for long-term durability either way.

Conclusion of Finding Right RV Mattress for Bunk Beds

Finding the ideal mattress is essential for truly restful, refreshing nights of sleep while traveling in your RV. Carefully measure your bunk bed dimensions, material preferences, comfort needs and budget to select the perfect mattress. Custom sizing, adjustable firmness and bunk-friendly construction ensure your mattress offers superior sleep on the road for years of family adventures ahead. Soon your bunkhouse will become the favorite space to unwind thanks to the comfort you create.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Bunk Mattresses

Here are answers to some other common questions about selecting an ideal mattress for recreational vehicle bunk beds:

What is the standard size for RV bunk mattresses?

RV twin at approximately 28-30” wide x 75” long is the most common. Short queen at 60”x75” also fits some bunks. Always measure yours.

How thick should a good RV bunk mattress be?

Look for at least 6 inches thick and ideally 8 inches for adequate cushioning. The limited space still requires some thickness for comfort.

What firmness level works best for RV bunks?

Medium firmness around 6/10 provides the best blend of support and pressure relief for most bunk sleepers. Softer works for lightweight kids.

Which foam materials make the best bunk bed mattresses?

Breathable memory foam and latex foam provide contouring and alleviate pressure points on the narrow beds. Seek high-density support foam.

Do I need a special RV mattress cover?

Moisture-wicking, stain-resistant polyurethane or vinyl covers hold up best to humidity and spills. Bamboo rayon and cotton also resist odors.

Should I get a thicker mattress topper for my bunks?

Yes, adding a 2-3 inch premium topper is an easy way to improve comfort and extend mattress lifespan despite heavy use.

Is it hard to find sheets that fit RV bunk mattresses?

It can be tricky. Using your precise mattress measurements makes it easier to find specialty RV sheets that won’t gap or slip off.

How can I secure the mattress in the RV bunk?

Straps that attach around and under the mattress or non-slip pads keep it in place. Some bunks have built-in drawers to hold mattresses.

Will an RV mattress work on traditional beds at home?

Possibly, depending on thickness. Short queen and RV twins can transfer for kids or guest rooms. Maximum versatility is a bonus.

1. The 2021 Grand Design – Imagine Floorplan: 2400 BH

Grand Design – Imagine

  • Dry Weight of 5,725 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,770 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,495 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 505 lbs.

They are a real favorite amongst families who love to travel with their kids. The Imagine is one of their more popular models.

About The Travel Trailer’s Sleeping Accommodations

The 2400 BH floorplan for the 2021 Grand Design Imagine was designed to maximize sleeping space while compromising as little living space as possible.

In the front of this travel trailer, you’ll find the master suite with a true queen size bed. There’s also plenty of overhead storage for his and her wardrobes.

In the rear, you will find a pair of double-size bunk beds. If necessary they can also serve as bike storage when you are underway.

This is a great layout for traveling with teenagers. Especially when you consider the distance between the rear bunk beds and the front master suite!

2021 Grand Design – Imagine 2400 BH

About The Travel Trailer’s Living Accommodations

True to the Grand Design line, the Imagine 2400 BH has a lot of the creature comforts that RV traveling families prioritize.

There’s a complete bathroom in the rear that has a shower, flushing toilet, and a sink.

The freshwater and wastewater storage tanks are also large enough to support a family using the bathroom and kitchen for a few days of boondocking off the grid.

The kitchen has an impressively large pantry that also holds the entertainment center. It’s perfectly positioned in front of the U-shaped dinette table.

Of course, this isn’t the only place you can cook. The 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2400 BH also has an outdoor kitchen with a small reach-in refrigerator, and a propane quick connect for fueling a gas grill.

This means you can cook a full meal outside without the heat competing with the 15,000 BTU air conditioner.

2. The 2021 Forest River – Cherokee Floorplan: 274 DBH

Forest River – Cherokee

  • Dry Weight of 6,407 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,298 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,705 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 705 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 46 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 64 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 42 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 10 people
  • Air Conditioning 13,500 BTUs

The Cherokee is one of Forest River’s most popular travel trailers. It has a lot of the basic creature comforts that a traveling family wants, with plenty of sleeping room for a family or a group of friends who love to travel together.

On paper, the 2021 Forest River Cherokee 274 DBH sleeps up to 10 people, though this figure might be a little ambitious.

Sleeping 7 to 8 people comfortably is more realistic. Still, that’s a lot of heads in beds for the very comfortable price tag Forest River puts on the Cherokee 274 DBH.

In the front, you’ll find a true master suite with a queen-size bed. There’s also a pair of wardrobe closets that reside over a large pass-thru storage compartment.

The confines of the master suite are arguably a little bit tight, but that’s just to make room for more sleeping and living space in the rest of the travel trailer.

In the back of the 2021 Forest River Cherokee 274 DBH, you will find stacked double beds in a bunkhouse configuration.

There’s even a very convenient ladder to get to the top bunk. The U-shaped dinette and the Sofa also convert into reasonably comfortable sleeping space.

It’s a great option for times when your teenage children want to have their friends with on an overnight stay.

Forest River – Cherokee 274 DBH

This is where the small sacrifice in the cramped master suite pays off. Not only is the kitchen large, but it also has a big pantry as well as a refrigerator and a three-burner stove with an oven. Not to mention the very large sink.

In the rear of 2021 Forest River Cherokee 274 DBH, you will find a complete bathroom with a flushing toilet, a sink, and even a shower stall with a deep enough basin to serve as a tub for bathing small children.

The freshwater and blackwater storage tanks are reasonably large. The 64-gallon gray water storage tank is impressive and lends itself toward children who frequently need to be reminded to wash their hands.

There are two possible complaints with the 2021 Forest River Cherokee 274 DBH it’s that the 13,500 BTU air conditioner is a little weak for the interior size of the travel trailer.

A 15,000 BTU unit would have been better. So, you will need to plan on bringing a fan or two with you to spread the cool air around on a hot and humid summer day.

The other possible complaint is the location of the TV’s entertainment center. It is mounted to the wall at the front of the travel trailer right near the master suite.

Not only does it create inconvenient sight angles throughout the living area, but it also makes it hard for the adults to go to sleep if the kids want to stay up watching TV.

This is a minor complaint, and with a little ingenuity, you could sacrifice a little pantry space to mount the TV at a better location for everyone.

3. The 2020 Coachmen – Apex Floorplan: 300 BHS

Coachmen – Apex Ultra Lite

  • Dry Weight of 5,977 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,623 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,600 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 672 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 50 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 35 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 35 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 9 people

Coachmen is another one of the industry leaders in the travel trailer marketplace.

The 2020 Coachmen Apex 300 BHS has a pair of the large slide-out sections that really give it spacious sleeping and living space.

The front of the 2020 Coachmen Apex 300 BHS houses a master suite with a true queen size bed.

There is also a pair of wardrobe closets as well as a fair amount of reasonable storage.

The front of the 2020 Coachmen Apex 300 BHS also houses a large pass-thru storage compartment, though it can only be accessed from the exterior of the travel trailer.

The rear of the 2020 Coachmen Apex 300 BHS is impressive with sleeping and living space.

The large slide-out section holds a futon with an overhead bunk opposite a pair of small bunks.

There’s also a fair amount of floor space making the rear feel a lot like a separate living room.

At the very least, you could put a second TV in the rear to give the kids a place to hang out all on their own.

2020 Coachmen – Apex Ultra Lite 300BHS

The main living room area blends with the kitchen in a true open concept.

Though the TV is mounted on the front wall, which doesn’t always make for great viewing angles if you have three people sitting on the couch.

Not to mention half of the people sitting in the dinette will have their back to the TV.

The bathroom is a little small, but it still has a flushing toilet, a sink, and a modest shower stall.

The 50-gallon fresh water storage tank and the 35-gallon gray water and black water storage tanks are a little bit small for a large family that wants to boondock off the grid.

Though if you’re the type of family that likes to park up at a campground with full access to resources, this is a non-factor.

4. The 2020 Cruiser RV – Embrace Floorplan: EL 310

Cruiser RV – Embrace

  • Dry Weight of 7,200 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 2540 lbs.
  • GVWR of 9740 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 940 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 44 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 30 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 30 gallons
  • Heater 30,000 BTUs

Cruiser RV isn’t necessarily a household name in the RV and travel trailer industry.

Though they have been steadily growing their market presence since the 1980’s thanks to their constant dedication to quality craftsmanship.

The 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace with the EL 310 floorplan seems to have been designed to give children their own separate place to sleep and play.

So, it’s a great option for families with a lot of kids or a family whose kids like to bring their friends up for a weekend at the camper.

The 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace with the EL 310 floorplan really impresses with a king-size bed in the master suite, as well as a rear section that’s perfect for the kids.

The tradeoff with such a large bed in the front master suite is that you do lose a lot of floor space and storage for clothing.

Just fixing the bed can be a challenge, but that’s a small price to pay for the room to really spread out when you’re sleeping.

The rear bunkhouse is integrated with one of the travel trailer’s two slide-out sections.

It has a futon with a bunk over top as well as a bunk over the compartment that houses the exterior kitchen.

The bench-seat dinette and the love seat also serve as functional sleeping space.

On paper, the 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace EL 310 will sleep up to 10 people, but 7 to 8 is more realistic. Especially if you’re going to be traveling with teenagers.

2020 Cruiser RV – Embrace EL 310

The interior of the 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace EL 310 is impressively spacious.

Though there isn’t a ton of seating in front of the TV, which is mounted on the front wall of near the master suite.

The bathroom is also large and features a shower stall that’s deep enough to bathe a child in the basin, as well as a sink and a flushing toilet.

Though the freshwater and wastewater storage tanks are a little small for a family that likes to boondock off the grid.

This is a non-factor if you like to stay at RV parks or you plan to keep the travel trailer at a seasonal campground with water and an RV dump station close at hand.

It’s also worth noting that the bathroom has a second access door.

The rear of the 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace EL 310 is also impressive. There’s plenty of sleeping space for 3 to 4 teenagers.

The slide-out section also makes enough floor space that gives them a separate place to relax and hang out without always being in your hair.

There is also a hatch for an outdoor kitchen in the rear. While you do technically sacrifice a bunk on the inside to accommodate it, the ability to cook outside is very handy.

It’s really nice on hot humid days when you don’t want the warmth from cooking a basic mid-day meal to compete with the 15,000 BTU air conditioner.

5. The 2020 Keystone – Hideout Floorplan: 272 LHS

2020 Keystone – Hideout

  • Dry Weight of 6,069 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,711 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,780 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 780 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 43 gallons

Keystone is another one of the industry leaders in RVs and high-quality travel trailers.

So, you knew they were going to bring a thoughtfully designed unit like the 2020 Keystone – Hideout Floorplan: 272LHS to what is a rather hungry marketplace.

Not only is it nicely appointed, but there are several optional upgrades that you can select directly from the manufacturer as well as many of their affiliated dealers.

On paper, the 2020 Keystone Hideout with the 272 LHS floorplan can sleep up to 10 people.

However, that is making some liberal use of double beds to sleep, two people. In the real world, you can comfortably sleep 6 to 8 people.

In the front, you will find the master suite with a queen-size bed. There’s also room for his and her closets as well as a convenient laundry chute.

The large pass-thru storage compartment isn’t immediately accessible from the master suite. Though this is usually the case with exterior storage bins.

In the rear, you will find two large bunk beds. Measuring in at 52 X 74 inches they’re perfect for teenagers.

There’s even enough room to stow a duffle bag. The dinette booth and the jackknife sofa also serve as a sleeping space.

2020 Keystone – Hideout 272 LHS

There are a few touches of luxury woven into the 2020 Keystone Hideout 272 LHS.

The optional upgrade to a 40-inch HDTV and the fireplace in the entertainment center is worth the price.

Interestingly, there’s also a central vacuum system port that makes cleanup a breeze.

If anything it saves you space by not having to keep a hand vacuum cleaner on board.

The kitchen has a good amount of storage space, including a large pantry that’s located right next to the refrigerator door.

There’s also a three-burner stove with an oven and a dual basin sink. The bathroom in the rear shares a wall with a large bunkhouse area.

It has a flushing toilet a sink and a relatively large walk-in shower.

Here again, the freshwater and wastewater storage tanks are a little on the small side. Especially if you have two or more teenagers traveling with you.

It pretty much means with the 2020 Keystone Hideout 272 LHS, you are going to spend most of your time at campgrounds and RV parks.

Though, there is still enough water storage capacity to handle a night or two of boondocking off the grid.

6. The 2020 Dutchmen – Aerolite Floorplan: 2423 BH

Dutchmen – Aerolite

  • Dry Weight of 5,722 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,878 lbs.
  • GVWR of 6,680 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 742 lbs.
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 39 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 28 gallons

Dutchmen is another one of the more well-known and beloved travel trailer manufacturers in the RV industry.

Every year their loyal customer base hit the open road with models like the spacious, lightweight 2020 Dutchmen Aerolite 2423 BH.

With one quick look at its interior, you get the feeling they designed this travel trailer with families in mind.

The 2020 Dutchmen Aerolite 2423 BH features a spacious master suite in the front of the travel trailer.

It has plenty of room to accommodate the queen size bed as well as a pair of wardrobe closets and copious overhead storage.

Though the front pass-thru storage cannot be accessed from the interior.

If there’s one complaint here it’s that the foot of the bed is very close to the wall, and the entertainment center is hanging on the other side.

It makes it hard to fall asleep if say the kids want to stay up watching movies after the adults want to go to bed for the night.

In the rear of the 2020 Dutchmen Aerolite 2423 BH you will find power jack bunk beds that are large enough to let a teenager sleep comfortably.

There’s also storage space for a pack & play. This is a thoughtful design for large families with children of different ages.

Dutchmen – Aerolite 2423BH

About The Travel Trailers Living Accommodations

One thing you will notice immediately about the 2020 Dutchmen Aerolite 2423 BH is the large bathroom.

It has a flushing toilet, a sink, and a large shower staff with a basin that’s deep enough to bathe a small child.

The bathroom and the kitchen sink are both supported by a large 50-gallon freshwater storage tank as well as a 39-gallon gray water storage tank and a 29-gallon black water storage tank.

There’s even a 6-gallon water heater, which is enough for two people to take a quick hot shower.

The kitchen is somewhat small and compact, though it has an open concept with the living area to keep everything feeling spacious.

It has a dual basin sink, a 3-burner stove with an oven, and a durable mid-size RV absorption refrigerator.

If there’s a complaint about the kitchen it’s the location of the pantry, which is on the other side of the travel trailer from the refrigerator and the range top.

This might be frustrating at times, or an excuse for you to work on your new dance moves when you’re cooking and need to quickly grab a can of beans.

7. The 2020 Keystone – Passport SL Series Floorplan: 175 BH

Keystone - Passport SL Series

  • Dry Weight of 3,325 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,175 lbs.
  • GVWR of 4,500 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 410 lbs.
  • Sleeps up to 6 people
  • Furnace 30,000 BTU

The 2020 Passport SL Series with the 175 BH floorplan is another well-designed travel trailer with bunk beds from Keystone.

It’s lightweight with only a 410-pound hitch weight, which makes it easy to tow with a half-ton pickup truck. Yet it can still sleep up to six people at a time.

About The Travel Trailer’s Sleeping Accommodations

The 2020 Keystone – Passport SL Series 175 BH can sleep up to 6 people on paper, but that’s counting on two people sleeping in the convertible dinette bed. In the real world, it sleeps up to 5 comfortably for a night.

In the front of the travel trailer, you’ll find a queen-size bed that will accommodate full-size sheets.

Though there is no dedicated door, so it doesn’t quite count as a master suite. Still, there’s a wardrobe as well as a nice amount of overhead storage.

In the rear, you’ll find two bunk beds, which will sleep school-age children but could still accommodate teenagers.

So, long as you give them their own storage elsewhere in the travel trailer.

Keystone - Passport SL Series 175 BHP

The kitchen has a single basin sink as well as a two-burner stove with a small oven.

There’s an RV absorption refrigerator, along with a pantry and a fair amount of overhead storage.

The bathroom has a sink, flushing toilet, and a decent size shower staff.

The entertainment center in the 2020 Keystone – Passport SL Series 175 BH is oddly located above the two-burner stove, which might not be the best idea for sensitive electronics.

It might be better to buy an aftermarket TV stand and put it near the front bed.

This would keep the TV away from the heat and steam of the stove, while still letting you position it where people can see it easily from the dinette.

8. The 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH

Jayco Jay Flight SLX

  • Dry Weight of 2,600 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 850 lbs.
  • GVWR of 3,450 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 295 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 10 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 20 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 20 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 4 people
  • Air Conditioning 8,000 BTUs
  • Furnace 18,000 BTU

The Jayco Jay Flight is one of the more popular lightweight travel trailers in their line.

With a 295-pound hitch weight and a dry weight of 2,600-pounds, you could tow it with an SUV or perhaps a light-duty pickup truck. Just try not to push the payload weight.

The internal layout also works nicely for a small family, or perhaps a single parent who wants to travel with two children.

There’s even a fair amount of storage space for toys and other essential items.

The 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH has a front dinette that quickly converts into a full-size bed. It’s just about right for one adult or perhaps two small adults.

It has a fair amount of overhead storage to keep essential items up and out of reach of small children.

This travel trailer has two bunk beds located at midship. They’re big enough to sleep a middle-school-age child or teenagers. There’s also a skylight over top to help let in a little night breeze.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH

For a small travel trailer, the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH comes with an entertainment center, complete with TV and some additional wardrobe space.

There’s a two-burner stove in the kitchen, a single basin sink, and even a microwave in the standard package.

The bathroom has a flushing toilet, as well as a modest shower stall. Though there is no sink. Any handwashing will need to be done in the kitchen’s single basin sink.

For a small, lightweight travel trailer the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH has relatively large freshwater and wastewater storage tanks.

There’s enough capacity to bring additional portable freshwater for washing hands without having to tap into the Jay Flight’s fresh water storage tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are slide outs good or bad for a travel trailer.

Power retractable slide outs used to be the sort of thing you found on large Class A motorhomes. Over the years they’ve been showing up on fifth-wheels and travel trailers.

In the case of a travel trailer with bunk beds, a slide-out section or two is a great way to gain some precious interior space.

The trade-off is that slide-out sections usually increase the weight of the travel trailer . This means you will need a larger tow vehicle and you will likely see fewer miles to the gallon when towing.

So, while it’s certainly a matter of preference, you might want to prioritize a travel trailer with slide-outs, if you are going to be traveling with more than two children. Especially if they’re teenagers, who often need more space.

How Can I Improve The Placement Of The TV In My Travel Trailer?

When it comes to travel trailers with bunk beds, you’re often sacrificing some of the internal space and swapping it with sleeping space.

Unfortunately, this sometimes translates into TVs or entertainment centers being placed in some unusual locations.

There is no hard and fast rule saying that you absolutely must keep the TV where it is. You could just as easily install a small entertainment center or TV stand in a better location.

Just make sure you are thinking about how you’re going to move any satellite TV wires and power cords.

Also, take into account the weight of the entertainment center and count it against the travel trailer’s payload capacity as well as the gross vehicle weight rating.

As you can see, there are a lot of great options to consider if you are looking to buy a travel trailer with bunk beds for your family.

Finding the best one will depend on the number of people you need to sleep on a nightly basis, as well as your preferences for space.

If you have some teenagers and you want to give them a little added privacy as well as give you some elbow room of your own, you the 2020 Cruiser RV Embrace EL 310 might be the best travel trailer with bunk beds for you.

The slide-out sections and thoughtful floor plan give the kids a veritable living room and hangout space all their own.

If you’re a single parent who wants to introduce their children to the thrill of life on the open road, and you’d like something lightweight to tow, the 2020 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH might be the best travel trailer with bunk beds for your family.

A family that loves to boondock off the grid, then you want a model with a lot of freshwater and wastewater storage capacity.

In a scenario like this the 2021 Grand Design – Imagine 2400 BH , might be the best travel trailer with bunk beds for off the grid camping.

Whatever your family’s preferences, chances are the best travel trailer with bunk beds for you is somewhere on this list.

What size is an “RV Bunk” mattress?

RV Bunk Mattresses are usually thin and long and can support one sleeper comfortably. They can come in a variety of sizes depending on the RV/Camper model and manufacturer. The most common RV bunk sizes are:

  • 28  inches  by 75  inches
  • 30  inches  by 75  inches
  • 30  inches  by 80  inches
  • 34  inches  by 75  inches
  • 35  inches  by 79  inches

How thick should an RV bunk mattress be?

Bunk mattresses should generally not raise above the guard rail at the edge of the bed . This is to help avoid falling out of the bed. Usually most guard rails will support a 6″ thick mattress and sometimes 8 or 10″ “. Check your RV or camper and choose a thickness that is right for your space. Most of the retailers we have listed will allow you to choose from a variety of mattress thicknesses.

What is an RV bunk mattress?

An RV bunk mattress is exactly what the name suggests, a mattress that goes inside a bunkbed within your RV or camper. Many RV manufacturers use bunk style mattresses to accommodate more sleepers. These bunks vary in size depending on the RV model and manufacturer. An RV bunk mattress is usually thinner and long and is made to fit a single sleeper comfortably.

What are the different types of rv bunk mattresses available?

While options for rv mattresses that fit into an odd sized bunk are limited there are surprisingly quite a few mattress manufacturers that have expanded their offerings to include RV bunk sizes. This means customers still have an option to choose a mattress style and comfort that fits their needs. Below are some of the different mattress styles available in an RV bunk size:

  • Innerspring RV bunk mattress: An innerspring mattress is a traditional style mattress that utilizes coils for its support system. This is the most common type of mattress and is the typew that most sleepers are used to. We have listed one manufacturer that makes an innerspring bunk mattress above but when it comes to bunk style mattresses the fact that they are so thin usually better suits an all foam mattress construction.
  • Hybrid RV Bunk Mattress: A hybrid mattress is a fancy way of specifying that the mattress utilizes innersprings as well as foam. This gives the sleeper the traditional bounce and support of a spring mattress while also providing pressure relief and comfort properties of a foam mattress. We recommend hybrid mattresses to the large majority of sleepers who don’t have any specific sleep needs.
  • Memory RV bunk mattress: Memory foam has recently become very popular in the bedding market. The material was originally made for use by NASA and was ultimately used in mattresses due to its unique pressure relief and cradling properties. Memory foam has a very unique feel that some people love and others hate. If you have never tried sleeping on a memory foam mattress before it is important to note that the feeling it very different from a traditional spring mattress.
  • Custom cut corners and sizes: Many RV mattresses may have a rounded corner or custom cut our edges. If this is the case we have provided a retailer below in our suggestions that will be able to accommodate and custom cuts for you.

How much does an RV bunk mattress cost

Due to the smaller size and thinner profile of an rv bunk mattress the pricing is much more affordasble than other mattresses on the market. Our cheapest memory foam option listed starts at $186 while the most expensive option can run upwards of $1000.

Things to consider before choosing a mattress for your rv bunk bed.

These are important factors to take into consideration when deciding which replacement rv mattress to purchase.

  • Usage: How often will you be sleeping on this mattress? How long will it need to last? If you plan to sleep on this mattress for multiple nights in a row or want it to last for many years we recommend staying away from the entry level affordable mattresses.
  • Does your mattress have custom cut corners? If your mattress has custom cut corners your options will be more limited to one or 2 retailers.
  • Material: Do you prefer a specific type of feel. The comfort level of Memory foam to innerspring mattresses or latex mattresses is all very different. It is important to understand what it is you like to sleep on before choosing a mattress that is right for you.
  • Firmness: What firmness do you prefer? Many of the mattresses we provide on this list will allow you to choose a firmness or are built to accommodate the large 80% of sleepers who prefer to sleep on a medium-firm mattress.
  • Sizing: Be sure to measure the exact size of your bed platform to be sure the mattress you choose will fit exactly. Many custom mattresses come with a zero return policy.

Where to buy custom rv bunk sheets:

Our favorite retailer for custom size bed sheets is mattressinsider.com. They have the best selection and provide great customer service. They also sell custom mattresses so they understand exactly the sizes you will need.

Where to buy an rv bunk topper:

If you need a custom size mattress topper then  mattressinsider.com is the place to go and is honestly one of the only places that provides mattress toppers for RVs. You can choose to purchase a memory foam topper and can even add an organic cotton cover to it.

Other popular RV mattress sizes:

Can you put a regular mattress in an rv.

Most often the answer is no. A regular mattress is nit going to fit in a custom size bed platform. While some RVs do in fact use standard size mattresses, most will use a odd sizes in order to gain additional living space within the RV.

Are RV mattresses different than regular mattresses?

RV mattresses are different sizes than standard mattresses. This is usually due to a lack of usable space within the RV. Manufacturers opt to use a shorter mattress in order to gain more space. These shorter “RV mattresses” are generally still able to accommodate the majority of sleepers (minus some taller than average individuals who may find their feet hanging off the end).

How can I make my RV bunk mattress more comfortable?

To make your RV mattress more comfortable you can either decide to purchase an entirely new mattress from one of the retailers we have listed or you can choose to purchase a mattress topper from a place like mattressinsider.com

Alternative options for purchasing a custom size mattress

If you prefer not to purchase your mattress online you can look for custom mattress factories in your area to build you a mattress you can test out before buying. A couple custom mattress manufacturers you can check out in person are:

  • Verlo Mattress Factories
  • Original Mattress Factory

What to do with your old custom mattress?

When you purchase a mattress online you are left to find a way to get rid of your old one. Luckily “A Bedder World” has  mattress disposal  services throughout the country. We work with mattress recycling centers to make sure your old mattress gets disposed of in the most eco-friendly manner possible. To date we have recycled over 500K mattresses. Book a pick up  here . Or try recycling it yourself!

Odd size mattresses are very common in RVs and there are quite a few high quality companies providing options for replacement rv bunk mattresses. All of the companies listed in this post are companies that we trust and that have great reputations within the sleep community. You can feel confident placing an order with an of them.

The Micro Minnie 1800BH is the smallest bunkhouse travel trailer on our list. At just under 22 feet long and 7 feet wide, this trailer is tiny, but has everything you need for a family camping trip. The single bunk beds are located on the driver side rear corner of the RV.

The dinette can also be converted into another bed. A double bed is located in the front of the RV trailer. While many small travel trailer bunkhouses have a flip-up bed, this bed is permanent, so it does not require any effort to set-up.

Another amazing (and enormous) rear bunkhouse travel trailer is the Venture SportTrek ST333VIK. The bunkroom includes a normal height single bed, and a raised top bunk which sits over a storage cabinet.

The lower bed is perfect both for smaller children who are at risk of falling from higher bunks and teenagers who need more headroom. The huge bunkroom is also great for teenagers because it also has a sofa (with another flip-up bunk above it), a table and a flip-up desk.

Outside the bunkroom is a full (second) bathroom. The other bathroom is located in the front of the trailer next to the main bedroom with a queen bed.

Finding an RV Bunk Mattress Cut Corner (Cut Corner RV Sheets)

  • July 12, 2021 /
  • RV Interior /
  • By James V.

RVs are not like traditional homes. The furniture that goes inside of these rigs is not made like the furniture for a traditional home. This includes the beds. Some RV beds come with a 45 degree cut at one corner making using traditional sheets a little difficult.

If you are a beginner RVer, you may not know where to look for RV mattresses and sheets. It may be one detail the dealer does not offer you when you go through your RV orientation. However, you can find both cut corner mattresses and sheets on the internet.

To learn some specific places where you can shop for this style of bedding, just continue to read our article. it has the information you need to find the right store to make your purchases. Just be forewarned that this style of bedding can get expensive.

RV Bunk Mattress Cut Corner Options

RV-Bunk-Mattress-Cut-Corner-Options

You are not stuck with the cut corner mattress option that comes with your RV. The makers of these rigs, unless they are producing a very luxurious model, do not go the extra mile when it comes to furnishings and bedding.

The mattress you get may not be to your liking or will not meet your back needs. That is okay as nothing is stopping you from replacing the mattress that comes with your RV with one that will meet your sleep needs.

You have a few options to choose from. There is the traditional foam style mattress. What is good about this option is that it is affordable and you can cut the edge to fit your bunk’s design.

The drawback to using foam is that they are made from petroleum products and have a mildew problem. Making sure there is good airflow will help solve that issue. Then you can choose a gel memory foam mattress although these may be a little more expensive than the foam option.

Because they can cost between $400 and $1000 you may want to pick up a mattress protector as well as keep the airflow flowing. A mildew issue will arise here if you are not careful.

An air mattress will work and can be quite comfortable if you pick the right one. Some people suggest the $10000 model but you should be able to find good and less expensive substitutes that will meet your needs. Just remember to change the air pressure in the mattress when you change altitudes.

Then, if you really want to have an RV mattress that fits your RV bed’s design, you may have to go to those mattress companies that specialize in making cut corner RV mattresses .

Finding Sheets for RV Corner Bunk

Finding-Sheets-for-RV-Corner-Bunk

This is also not going to be that difficult if you look in the right places. Of course, you can always buy those traditional sheets at a very low price and then manipulate the sheets until you get a nice fit. Or if you are good at sewing, you can always alter them to fit your design requirements.

But, the good news is that there are companies out there that sell sheets designed for RV cut corner mattresses. Etsy is one and their ad said they had about 6 options available for you to choose from. However, the cost of those sheets runs around $70.

Amazon is always a great place to look as they can offer you sheets with up to 600 thread count or those lower-cost sheets made for RVs with a little less thread count. Plus, they have cotton to microfiber options which allow you to fit your budget with ease.

Or you can go to the many RV accessory stores that help RV owners find specific items in specific RV shapes. We will not guarantee that their prices will be on the budget-friendly side of the scale.

Stores like Camping World, Cinch Fit, Quick Fit, Tochta.com, Mattress Insider, and more will offer you a great selection of their RV sheets. Then, these same stores should have RV-designed mattress pads and protectors. If you are going to spend a lot of money, it is a wise move to spend a little more and protect those expensive mattresses.

Cut Corner RV Sheets Ideas

Cut-Corner-RV-Sheets-Ideas

The internet is full of ideas and websites like Pinterest often have some great designs you can try. At least they will have all the step-by-step instructions that cannot be given in this small space.

One good idea is to use the non-elastic top sheet and fold it to meet the design of the mattress. You can secure the fold with safety pins if you want. Or you can use a twin-fitted sheet for those bunks that are twin-sized. They stay in place better than top sheets may.

Then you can use elastic straps that are strategically placed to pull the sheet smooth so you do not have folds underneath you when you sleep. One company has created a zipper style sheet and as long as you do not sell the ones you made you should be able to copy the design to help your nighttime situation.

The best thing to do is look at how your RV bed is designed and brainstorm. Not all RV mattresses have that 45 degrees cut and may be rounded. Get ideas that fit your bed design.

Some Final Words

Living or even traveling part-time in an RV can be a challenge. Sleeping comfortably is no exception to that observation. The trick is finding the right mattresses and sheets that fit your RV’s bedroom design.

Thankfully, there are enough outlets online and in traditional businesses that will help you out. You just need to find the one that sells those items that meet your budget.

What are the benefits of a bunkhouse camper?

Travel trailer bunkhouses are a great value––you get extra sleeping space for an affordable price. In addition to sleeping capacity, a travel trailer with a bunk room can provide flexibility. Bunk beds are efficient in floor plans, leaving more floor space to move around. Some bunkhouses include beds in a loft, which makes the most of vertical space, leaving you more RV storage room.

These types of RVs are typically smaller, lighter, and more affordable compared to fifth wheels and toy haulers . And smaller travel trailers are great for new RV owners , because their size means they’re easier to tow. Don’t let categories fool you, however––travel trailers are more than just basic RVs. You can also find travel trailers with bunkhouses in mid-range and luxury models, and with a wide variety of attractive amenities. Looking for a bunkhouse model with a fireplace or an outdoor RV kitchen ? Heartland can help you find it.

Who should consider buying a travel trailer bunkhouse RV?

Travel trailers with bunkhouses can suit a variety of campers. Maybe you have a big family with lots of kids, or you like to travel with your extended family in a bunkhouse travel trailer. Bunk beds are a great way to give everyone a little space to themselves. If you like to travel with groups of friends, travel trailer bunkhouse campers are perfect for keeping everyone happy on the road.

Kids love bunk beds because they can go to sleep earlier or later than their siblings without being disturbed when someone else gets up or goes to bed. And a bunkhouse RV's floor plans are perfect for teenagers who want to bring along a friend or just have some time alone to read or listen to music in peace. One additional use for bunk beds is overflow storage space, particularly for people traveling with large objects. For instance, we know of one family who RVs full-time and uses their bunk bed to hold a stand-up cello when they’re on the road.

Disclaimer: Always consult owner’s manuals for vehicles and accessories before towing a recreational vehicle. Towing capacity will vary based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories, and number of passengers.

8 Clever DIY RV Bunk Bed Plans You Can Construct Today (With Pictures)

  • Last updated: Mar 07 2024

With an RV, you can enjoy the road, camp out in the wilderness, and have a quiet time with your family. Motorhomes and campervans are all about being spontaneous and embracing Mother Nature. That said, it’s very important to ensure the beds are nice and comfortable. Otherwise, you’ll have to deal with back pains in the morning! Now, for RVs, bunk beds are a very popular choice.

They’re flexible, take up little space, and can accommodate up to four people. Unfortunately, they can also be quite expensive. That’s why today, we want to introduce you to eight top-notch DIY plans for building a bunk bed. We only included the most straightforward and rewarding plans that take little time and effort to construct. All you need is some basic tools and our hand-picked guides to build one of these!

The 8 DIY RV Bunk Bed Plans

1. diy bunk bed with storage bins by the touring camper.

Trying to make every inch in the RV count? If that’s the case, this bunk bed with storage bins will help maximize the space in your trailer. You can use the hidden boxes/containers to keep clothes, bed linen, or whatever else you need to store. To build this bunk bed, make sure you have enough plywood and screws, and grab a circular saw and electric drill from the garage.

Once you’re all set up and ready to go, constructing both the beds and the storage compartments will be a rather straightforward process. Put your gloves on. and don’t rush it! You have the option of building the whole thing from the ground up or rebuilding an existing bed. Painting or finishing it is definitely worth it in the long run, but you can skip this part for now.

2. DIY Removable Bunk Bed by Covet the Camper

RV fans looking for extra mobility will definitely appreciate the simplicity and flexibility of a DIY removable bunk bed . The list of required instruments is relatively short. As long as you have a screwdriver and drill, you will be able to pull this plan off. It’s highly customizable and easily fits a pre-existing bunk bed or a slide-out bed. Start by measuring the width to be precise with your cutting.

The bottom of the bunk bed should be pine; as for the frames, cherry or oak are the best options. This is important: this makeshift bed consists of two separate parts. The first one should be secured with a set of t-nut bolts. Remove those bolts, and the bed will come right off. As for the second one, use a set of side braces to hold it in place.

3. Aluminum DIY Bunk Bed for a Small RV by Lady and the Scamp

If you’re a bit worried that a regular bunk bed made of wood won’t be able to hold your weight, an aluminum bunk bed for a small RV will be able to solve that for you. First, it’s specifically designed to fit in a tiny recreational vehicle. Second, you can easily modify it to fit your motorhome. For this, you’ll need extruded aluminum slats, wood (a single sheet will do), and fiberglass for the bottom. To cut the aluminum, get a set of metal-cutting blades for your saw.

To cover the sharp parts, use a set of foam noodles. Lightweight but able to hold at least 250–300 pounds, this bunk bed will easily handle two people sleeping on it.

4. DIY RV Bunk Remodel for Kids by The New Lighter Life

Many old-school RVs come with a built-in closet. But what if you have more need for a bunk bed rather than a place to store clothes? We have the answer for you: an RV bunk remodel for kids . Depending on how big the closet is, you should be able to fit two bunks in there, large enough to be comfortable for kids up to 8–10 years old.

Essentially, this project is about removing the parts from the closet that get in the way and leaving the rest untouched. Most importantly, remove the closet doors; the top shelf, in turn, can store all the pillows, blankets, and whatnot. For the frames, use lumber (1×1) and put a piece of plywood on top of it to form the beds. To cut the mattress to shape, use a reciprocating saw.

5. Quick-To-Build DIY Bunk Bed by The Casa Collective

Don’t have all the time in the world to construct bunks for the RV? Don’t worry: with this quick-to-build bunk bed plan, you’ll be done in the blink of an eye. For the base, uprights, and ladder, use treated pine. It’s cheap and lasts for a long time. Measure everything with a pencil, tape, and level. Now, you could, of course, do your own cutting with a handheld saw, but it would be better just to get plywood panels of the right size from the store.

To cut the foam mattress to size, a regular knife will do. For the walls, it’s recommended to use 3mm plywood.

6. DIY RV Bunk Bed with a Drawer and Dresser by Wacky Wanderers

Are you ready to take your DIY skills to the next level? Then let’s try and build this lovely RV bunk bed with a drawer and dresser ! As the name suggests, along with the bunks, it also includes lots of storage for your clothes and other stuff. The frame will be solely built from aluminum slats; for the base, plywood is the obvious choice. To smooth out the edges, use regular plastic wall extrusion.

This project involves a lot of welding; if you don’t have a machine for that, consider renting it. Also, get ready to use this tool a lot to put the frame together and connect all the individual rails. The final result will be well worth it, especially if you have active kids that like to jump up and down on the bunks!

7. Cheap, Easy-To-Build DIY Bunk Beds by Good News Bus

The best thing about these cheap, easy-to-build bunk beds is their versatile design. Originally, they were built for a school bus, but you can just as easily install them in an RV (like a motorhome, campervan, or even a trailer/caravan). As long as you get the dimensions correctly, the bunks will fit right in. Be delicate and take it slow when working on the frame. Adding the cardboard, plywood, and carpet will be a walk in the park.

Just like with all the other plans, be meticulous with the measurements and put a pair of protective gloves on.

8. DIY Triple Bunk Bed by Jen Woodhouse

If you have a big, lovely family with at least three children, this DIY triple bunk bed will help you keep the kids nice and cozy on your next camping journey. Again, technically, this isn’t an RV bunk bed per se, but all you’ll have to do to turn it into one is a set of screws to attach it to the RV’s wall. Do make sure it’s compact enough to fit into the trailer, of course. This is one of the least expensive and straightforward plans for DIY bunks.

And it’s one of those projects that you can keep improving by painting the beds and adding curtains and cute little shelves for books and stuff.

What’s the Best Mattress for an RV Bunk Bed?

Alright, now that we’ve got the beds in place and ready to use, let’s talk about the mattress. No matter how great the framing is, if the mattress is too thin, it won’t be at all uncomfortable. Speaking of thickness, for most RV bunk beds, 5–6 inches of foam mattresses are the golden middle. If it’s a slide-out bed, you simply won’t be able to fit anything thicker in there. But with regular beds, you can go with whatever density/thickness you want.

Once you’re happy with the sickness, check how durable the mattress is. Ideally, it should be equally comfortable to sleep, dine, watch TV, and play on it. That will cost extra, of course. So, instead of investing in an expensive mattress, you might want to get a cheaper one. This way, it won’t hurt your wallet to buy a new one when the time comes. We’d also recommend opting for a lightweight mattress for mobility. Here’s a quick rundown of the most popular mattress types :

  • For extra comfort, invest in a memory foam mattress . It will cost $400–1K but do a great job of relieving pressure points and ensuring a good night’s sleep
  • Looking for an environmentally-friendly option? Then latex mattresses will be the best pick. They are pretty expensive ($800–1.5K) and slightly less comfortable but will keep mold, mites, and other pests away
  • Lightweight, flexible, and cheap (you can get one for as low as $100–150), air mattresses are another crowd favorite . Sadly, they are easy to damage and don’t always provide enough support for the body

How Do You Pick the Right Mattress Size?

One of the most popular questions online is “Can I put my favorite mattress in an RV”? If we’re talking about bunk beds, the answer is mostly going to be no, because regular-sized mattresses don’t usually fit in RV bunk beds. But if the dimensions fit, then you can, of course, use it. Now, depending on the size of your recreational vehicle, the bunk can be as small as 28 x 75 inches or as large as 35 x 79 inches.

So, before you buy a new mattress, measure the exact length and width of your bunk to get the proportions right. If you find a great deal on a twin-size or a truck-size bed mattress, do check whether it will fit your RV’s bunk bed or not. The same is true for king-size, queen-size, and double-size mattresses. Yes, there are lots of options on the market; however, they won’t all fit your bunk bed.

How Much Does a Brand New Bunk Bed Cost?

If you’re not yet ready to spend the whole weekend trying to build a DIY bunk bed, you’re probably looking to buy it online or at a local store. So, how much does the average-sized bunk bed for an RV cost? This depends on the material quality, the size of the bed, and whether you want to pay for the installation or plan on doing it yourself. The area that you live in will also greatly affect the price. RV bunk beds in Alabama are a lot more affordable than somewhere in Cali.

To give you a general idea, expect to pay $200–500 for a decent-quality bed (or up to $4K for a premium unit). This is the price for the actual bed (the mattress is usually sold separately). And while most brands do include the cost of shipment into that price, in some rare cases, you’ll have to pay for it from your own pocket. And one more thing: make sure the package includes the necessary hardware for assembly and detailed instructions.

While it might not be very romantic, sleeping is a big part of any camping adventure, especially if there are little kids in the RV . Now, if you have a full-fledged motorhome with a proper-sized bed, you won’t find much use for a bunk bed. However, for a campervan, a high sleeper is a must. But wait—why buy it if you can build it?

With the right tools, materials, and these friendly guides, it’s very well possible to put together a DIY bunk bed . No need to pay a professional carpenter or ask a buddy for help. Just pick a plan from the list, free up a couple of days to work on the project, and build a one-of-a-kind DIY bunk bed!

The Best Travel Trailers with Murphy Beds

travel trailer double bunk mattress

  • Length: 24’10”
  • Dry Weight: 4,542 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,450 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4

The most unique layout on this list and my favorite, the Sundance 21HB is a solid start to the top ten travel trailers with Murphy beds.

The rear dinette area opens up the middle of the RV for an expanded kitchen and a spacious bathroom, all under 25 feet. I love that there is a full closet in the Murphy bed area, a feature other compact RVs on this list are missing. The bathroom even includes a small soaking tub perfect for bathing small children or pets!

My favorite feature is the flip-up baggage door at the rear of this travel trailer. This feature gives the RV an indoor/outdoor feel, making it an ideal hybrid camper for stowing recreation gear and camping toys.

How I Ranked It

I just can’t imagine this being a bad choice for couples or small families on the go. The overall layout lends a sense of privacy to all folks by putting the convertible dinette at the rear. But let’s be honest–this is about the baggage door. Part of camping for me is taking in the sights and sounds of nature, which allows you to do that while still in the comfort of your RV. I’d look forward to rainy days at camp where I could flip up the door and listen to a storm roll through while staying dry.

(2) East to West Alta 1900MMK

east to west alta 1900mmk travel trailer with a murphy bed

  • Length: 25’
  • Dry Weight: 5,463 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,147 pounds

The Alta 1900MMK is designed for couples seeking a cozy, home-like experience on the road. The queen Murphy bed converts to a lovely seating area with a removable table by your theater seats. Though this travel trailer doesn’t have a dinette, I don’t think you’ll miss it much.

The kitchen is my favorite part of this RV with Murphy beds. It has abundant counterspace spanning the length of the travel trailer and huge under-counter storage drawers. I wish this model had a backsplash for that subtle touch of home, but I can overlook it with the amount of counterspace I’m getting.

This travel trailer with Murphy beds feels like a mini apartment on wheels. It’s cozy and has tons of cargo capacity (2,147 pounds worth). I love the interior layout and use of space. If you are traveling with kids, this is not the RV you need. However, for a couple on the go who might have an occasional guest, the Alta 1900MMK is one to consider.

(3) Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S

Father and son playing games in Rockwood Mini Lite camper

  • Length: 25’11”
  • Dry Weight: 5,499 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,434 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

There’s one thing I can count on with Forest River: smart, space-aware designs. The Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S is no exception. Other Murphy bed travel trailers on this list use rear corner bunks to increase sleeping capacity, but Forest River does it best.

One of the standout features of this travel trailer with Murphy bed is its bathtub. Most RVs only come with a shower option. If you have young kids or small pets you need to clean after adventures, having a deeper shower basin is a little bit of a luxury on the road.

I may not be traveling with kids, but this camper is high on my list for the innovative features Forest River includes. From the U-shaped dinette to the L-shaped kitchen with a pop up counter, this RV has everything you need for a great adventure.

(4) Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro 19FD

forest river Flagstaff E-Pro 19FDS

  • Length: 20’2”
  • Dry Weight: 3,417 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,015 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 3

Short and sweet. The Flagstaff E-Pro 19FD is a compact Murphy bed travel trailer built with couples in mind. It’s the shortest on this list and perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of towing some of the larger, heavier RVs.

When the Murphy bed is pulled down, some campers might find the interior space slightly cramped because this travel trailer doesn’t include a slide. Still, you have a nice-sized kitchen, a full-size shower, and everything you need for a stay of any length.

This travel trailer with Murphy beds is an excellent option for couples on the go. It’s got everything you need, but it doesn’t have any of the extras. When looking side-by-side, the indoor/outdoor feel of the Heartland Sundance and the expansive counterspace of the East to West Alta edge out the Flagstaff for my top spots for couples.

(5) Jayco Jay Feather 21MML

  • Length: 25’5”
  • Dry Weight: 5,225 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,275 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

The Jay Feather 21MML is another great option for couples. One of the big differences in this camper is the extra kitchen space at the rear of the floor plan. You get countertops, overhead storage, and the sink and storage on the back of the travel trailer, with the three-burner cooktop, the refrigerator, and additional counterspace in the off-campside slide-out.

Speaking of the slide, this travel trailer with Murphy beds is one of the larger RVs on this list, and it opens up the interior space. The bathroom is large, with a built-in linen closet, which also adds to the intelligent design.

I won’t lie; the Jay Feather 21MML surprised me. I often don’t find that Jayco’s interior layouts fit my personal preferences. Their signature vintage farmhouse interior features millennial gray floors, which wouldn’t be my first choice. But this travel trailer has a really nice design. The kitchen provides a fair amount of counterspace and storage, and the linen closet in the bathroom actually boosts this travel trailer up on the list.

(6) East to West Silver Lake 1700BHLE

  • Length: 22’10”
  • Dry Weight: 4,693 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 972 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

The Silver Lake 1700BHLE is a versatile bunkhouse travel trailer that combines practicality and comfort, making it an excellent choice for families. This RV offers rear bunk beds with convenient storage underneath, ensuring everyone has space to sleep and store their belongings. When the Murphy bed is pulled down, the main sleeping area boasts a queen-sized bed with nightstands and a single wardrobe on the campside.

The bright and welcoming interior has a slide-out with a booth dinette, maximizing the living space and offering a comfortable place for family meals. Though not the most robust kitchen, it does feature a two-burner stove, a microwave, and enough counterspace for food prep.

The East to West Silver Lake 1700BHLE has everything you need to feel at home on the road while providing comfort for all travelers. Kitchen space is important to me, so this RV’s lack of counterspace kicked it down on my list.

I’m also traveling only with my husband, and while the bunks are a great option for extra travelers, it’s just not the space we need. But if you are traveling with kids, the Silver Lake is worth the look!

(7) Keystone Passport SL 189RB

Keystone Passport Exterior

  • Length: 22’11”
  • Dry Weight: 4,875 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,625 pounds

The Passport SL 189RB is another stand-out option for couples. This rear bathroom model opens up more space in the middle of the RV for the kitchen and storage. The L-shaped counters use great space, and the pop up counter adds extra surface area for cooking on the road.

This travel trailer with Murphy beds also includes an enclosed underbelly for all-season travel. Combined with home-like interiors and smart design choices, this is a good option for couples traveling together. Another family-friendly feature is the small outdoor kitchen. While it’s not the largest, you’ll have a pull-out griddle to expand your cooking options.

This RV with Murphy beds is good but not great. While I like that the rear bathroom opens up more living space, this travel trailer feels like it lacks some of the smarter storage options you’ll find in other RVs on this list. For example, the kitchen lacks a true pantry and only has modest storage options.

(8) Jayco Jay Feather Micro 199MBS

  • Length: 23’1”
  • Dry Weight: 4,505 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,245 pounds

The Jay Feather Micro 199MBS is another solid option for families. The interior is built around simplicity without sacrifice, and it includes rear corner bunks so everyone can have a comfortable stay. The U-shaped dinette also converts to a larger extra sleeping space than you’ll get in Murphy bed campers with a booth dinette.

This towable trailer with Murphy beds includes side and rearview cameras, making parking at your campground a breeze. You also get Jayco’s Rock-Solid Stabilizer system to ensure you are level anywhere. It is also Climate Shield TM tested, so you’ll be comfortable inside whether your trip is to Death Valley or North Cascades .

This is a fantastic option for a simple, efficient travel trailer with Murphy beds. However, the finishes bring it lower on my list. It’s a personal preference, but I am not a big fan of millennial gray and modern interiors. It feels like it lacks a certain personality and doesn’t have many of the value-added interior features that some of the other travel trailers with Murphy beds on this list include.

(9) Keystone Hideout Sport 181BH

Hideout Sport Exterior

  • Length: 22’9”
  • Dry Weight: 4,060 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,140 pounds

The Hideout Sport 181BH is another affordable bunkhouse travel trailer with a Murphy bed. This compact and lightweight trailer does not sacrifice interior features. If you have a full crew, the bunkhouse provides an extra sleeping area. If you don’t, flip up the bottom bunk for additional storage for bigger toys like mountain bikes.

That kind of versatility makes a huge difference in a travel trailer under 24 feet . Besides the flip-up bunk, this Murphy bed travel trailer has a modest kitchen with a two-burner stove, a single slide with a dinette, and a spacious bathroom.

The Keystone Hideout is very simple, but it needs some of the storage solutions included in other small travel trailers with Murphy beds on this list. The kitchen has no pantry, the counterspace is small, and the bathroom lacks a medicine cabinet. These might be negotiable for you, but I prefer more organization options when I travel.

(10) Heartland Pioneer BH170

Murphy Bed-travel-trailers-with-murphy-beds

  • Length: 22’5.75”
  • Dry Weight: 3,880 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,144 pounds

If you want a lightweight travel trailer with a Murphy bed, the Pioneer BH170 might be it. This travel trailer is the lightest on the list, making it easy to tow and maneuver for almost any truck or SUV. Still, we always recommend double-checking your vehicle’s towing capacity .

Part of what makes this travel trailer with Murphy beds so light is the lack of a slide-out. If you choose to max out this camper’s eight-person sleeping capacity, the interior space will feel quite cramped at a length of less than 23 feet. Still, this travel trailer has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is surprisingly robust, with a dual-basin sink and plenty of counterspace. The bathroom even includes a deeper shower basin!

The Heartland Pioneer BH170 rounds out our list because of the high sleeping capacity without a slide. While the interior uses the available space efficiently, extending the Murphy bed takes up most of the interior space. I’m a big fan of personal space when traveling. How To Make an RV Murphy Bed More Comfortable

Couple asking retail specialist for help at Camping World

You can make an RV Murphy bed more comfortable by adding a high-quality memory foam mattress topper or replacing the mattress with one designed for RVs. Consider using a mattress pad for added softness, and ensure the bedding is breathable and fitted.

How Much Weight Can a Murphy Bed Handle?

The weight capacity of a Murphy bed typically ranges from 500 to 1,000 pounds, depending on the model and installation. It’s essential to check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact weight limit and ensure the bed is securely mounted to handle the intended load safely.

What Are The Disadvantages of a Murphy Bed?

Murphy beds can be less comfortable than traditional beds, especially if the mattress is thin or low-quality. While setup and breakdown are easy, they can also be a bit tedious. The bed’s hardware is also more likely to require repairs over time than a standard RV bed.

Travel trailers with Murphy beds provide great space-saving options without sacrificing comfort. But there are many other layouts for you to explore! Check out some of these alternative floorplans to find your perfect RV.
