⌛ So, how far is Tulum from Playa del Carmen? The cities are 40 miles (65 km) from each other, only an hour’s drive away.

There are quite a few transportation options available to make the journey. Some are pricier, some are affordable and more basic. TAKE THE ADO BUS FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO TULUM

A fantastic means of transport that will get you from Playa del Carmen to Tulum is the ADO bus . This is a good option if you want an affordable transfer without losing comfort.

To take the ADO bus in Playa del Carmen, head to the bus station at 5 th Avenue and Benito Juarez (also called Terminal Turistica). There are two stations in Playa del Carmen, so make sure to check which station your hotel is closer to.

There are many departures a day from Playa to Tulum starting at 6.30 AM and running pretty much every hour until 10.30 PM. There are a couple extra services at 0.30 AM and 1.30 AM .

You can check out the current schedule on the ADO website (only in Spanish), but foreign credit cards don’t work to purchase tickets.

At just one hour away from Playa del Carmen, a day trip to Tulum is an easy and fun activity if you want to find out for yourself what makes Tulum so unique.

You might be wondering – is it safe to take a day trip to Tulum? It’s not a secret that there have been widely publicized incidents of drug violence in Tulum in the past couple of years. 

However, as someone who lives in Playa del Carmen, I do still believe it is safe to visit Tulum on a day trip.

If you stick to the main tourist areas and steer clear of any drug activity, you will more than likely be fine visiting Tulum. It’s more the late-night and illegal activity where risks are higher and danger is more likely to occur.

Of course, safety is never guaranteed and it’s important for travelers to be aware of the possible risks and current safety situation in Tulum.

As in any foreign destination, use common sense, avoid staying out too late, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Drive to Tulum

If you’re comfortable driving in Mexico, the best way to get to Tulum is by renting a car from Playa del Carmen .

This would allow you the freedom to visit places on your own schedule and explore some of the more off-the-beaten-path attractions near Tulum.

Plus, driving to Tulum from Playa del Carmen is very easy – it’s just a straight shot down the highway. You’ll just want to watch out for speed bumps and occasional traffic stops.

Take a Taxi to Tulum

If you don’t want to drive yourself, taxis are abundantly available in Playa del Carmen and can be easily hailed to get to Tulum. 

You can expect the Playa del Carmen to Tulum taxi price to be about $1000 pesos (~$60 USD) each way.

When taking a taxi to Tulum from Playa del Carmen, it’s always best to confirm the price of the taxi upfront before getting in the car.  You’ll also want to have enough cash on hand as credit cards are typically not accepted. 

Travelista Tip: Always wear a seatbelt when taking taxis especially for long distances.  Drivers in Mexico can be a little unpredictable and it’s not uncommon for accidents to occur. 

Take a Colectivo to Tulum

The cheapest way to get from Playa del Carmen to Tulum is to take a colectivo, which is a public transport and shared van service that runs continuously on the highway between the two towns.

Colectivos can be picked up in downtown Playa del Carmen near the Chedraui grocery store and the main highway 307 (behind the McDonald’s).

There will be a line of colectivos and you’ll want to make sure you get on one that says “Tulum” on the side. 

Tulum Colectivo Schedule

Colectivos do not have a set schedule and just depart when they are full so you’ll never have to wait long to get on the road.

They typically depart every 5-10 minutes and run from early in the morning to around 11PM.

Once you’re on the colectivo, it will take a little longer to get to Tulum as colectivos stop frequently to pick people up and let them off along the way.

There aren’t specific stops so you’ll need to tell the driver when you would like to get off if it’s before the final stop in Tulum.

Tulum Colectivo Cost

The colectivo to Tulum costs around $50 pesos (~$2.50 USD) and you will pay the driver upon exiting.

It’s best to pay in pesos and you’ll want to have small bills on hand as most drivers will not have much change.

Depending on where you’re headed, you can either get off at the Tulum Ruins, at the beach road to the Hotel Zone, or just take the colectivo all the way to the end at the stop in Tulum Centro. 

Take the ADO Bus to Tulum

Another option to get to Tulum is by taking the ADO bus, which is charter-style bus and is much larger and more comfortable than a colectivo. 

The Playa del Carmen to Tulum ADO bus has set schedules and tickets can be booked online so this is a better option if you don’t speak Spanish and are nervous about taking a colectivo.

The ADO bus to Tulum from Playa del Carmen departs very frequently with 2-3 departures every hour from early in the morning until around 11PM.  The travel time is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

The Playa del Carmen to Tulum bus departs from the Playa del Carmen Turisitica ADO station in downtown Playa del Carmen on 5th Avenue and Avenida Juarez.

They will drop you off at the ADO Station in Tulum, which is located right off the main highway just south of the Tulum town center.

From there, you can take a taxi to the Tulum Ruins, nearby cenotes, or the popular beachfront hotel zone.

How to Book ADO Tickets

ADO Playa del Carmen to Tulum tickets can be booked online on the ADO website and the cost is around $120 pesos (~$7 USD) each way.

If you don’t speak Spanish, I would recommend booking ADO tickets on Busbud , which is an online booking tool but you’ll pay a tiny bit more for the added convenience.

If you want to visit Tulum from Playa del Carmen, the most hassle-free option would be to book a tour with roundtrip transportation included.  

This would be an all-inclusive experience with fun activities like visiting the Tulum Ruins, reef snorkeling, cenote swims, or ziplining.

How to Get Around Tulum

Once you’re in Tulum, there are a few different Tulum transportation options available depending on what you choose for your day’s activities. 

If you have a rental car , this is probably the easiest way to get around Tulum on your own.

Parking is available at most restaurants, hotels, and beach clubs along the hotel zone for paying customers.  Valet parking may also be an option for an added cost. 

If you don’t have a car, taxis are abundantly available in Tulum and can be hailed easily to get around.

Just keep in mind, taxis in Tulum are typically much more expensive than in Playa del Carmen. 

You’ll want to confirm the price of the taxi upfront before getting in and it’s best to have cash on hand as credit cards will not be accepted.

Another fun way to get around Tulum is by renting bicycles.  Bicycles can be rented from bike rental shops in Tulum Centro–there are a few rental shops located right off the main highway. 

Bikes can typically be rented by the hour or day and they’ll likely request an ID to keep as a form of collateral to ensure you return the bike.

From there, you can ride to the beach and pedal along the trendy beachfront hotel zone. 

Travelista Tip: Use caution when bike riding along Tulum’s Hotel Zone as the roads can be narrow and you’ll come close to passing vehicle traffic. 

Best Things to Do in Tulum on a Day Trip

Tulum offers plenty of fun activities that are perfect for a day trip.  These are some of the best things to do in Tulum:

1. Visit the Tulum Ruins

Undoubtedly Tulum’s most popular attraction, the Tulum Ruins are one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico and the only beachfront Mayan ruins near Playa del Carmen .

The most notable feature of the Tulum Ruins is the oceanfront location with the ruins elevated at a height of about 12 m (~39 feet), offering spectacular seaside views of the brightly colored Caribbean Sea.

At the Tulum archaeological site, many basic structures remain including El Castillo (The Castle) and many different temples.  The site also offers a one-of-a-kind public beach access area to cool off after visiting the ruins. 

While not as grand as what you’ll see on the Chichen Itza tour , the Tulum Ruins are still impressive and worth a visit! 

They are one of the best day trips from Tulum and if you get there early, you’ll still have time to hit a beach club in Tulum afterwards. 

2. Visit a Tulum beach club

Tulum is home to many fabulous beach clubs, which are a great place to spend the day relaxing on lounge beds with food and beverage service.

You’ll find beach clubs in Tulum for every vibe whether you’re looking for a beachfront party scene or something much more chill and relaxing.  

One important thing to know about Tulum is that there aren’t many public beach access points. 

So in order to access some of Tulum’s most beautiful beaches, you’ll need to purchase access by renting lounge chairs at a beach club or dining at a beachfront restaurant. 

While this can be expensive, from my experience it has definitely been worth it!

With far fewer crowds and a widespread beachfront area, the beaches in Tulum are far superior to the beaches in Playa del Carmen . Plus they are much more chill so you’ll actually be able to relax!

• Ziggy’s Beach Club: With a palm tree lined entrance and cutely strung overhead lights, Ziggy’s Beach Club is a fun Tulum beach club with great food and drinks and a widespread beachfront area.  You can grab a table at the restaurant or head directly down to the beach to reserve a large beach bed.  Pricing varies by season but there is usually a minimum consumption charge.

• Mia Beach Club : As one of the trendier and more upscale beach clubs in Tulum, Mia Restaurant & Beach Club offers a full service restaurant and bar, as well as large day beds for rent on the beach with palm trees for shade. The menu at Mia’s offers upscale Mexican cuisine such as tacos, seafood, and ceviches, as well as a few American items like hamburgers and ribs. Pricing varies by season but there is usually a minimum consumption charge.

Travelista Tip: If you’re looking to save money, head to Playa Paraiso (Paradise Beach), which is one of the only public beaches in Tulum. 

3. Visit a Tulum cenote

Another fun activity in Tulum is to head to a nearby cenote, which are freshwater swimming holes unique to the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.

Once there, you can swim, snorkel, or just hang out in crystal clear waters and admire the natural beauty. 

These are some of the best cenotes near Tulum:

• Gran Cenote : Gran Cenote is a popular cenote located less than 10 minutes outside of downtown Tulum.  It has an open swimming area, as well as a cave you can float or snorkel through.  Snorkel gear and life jackets can be rented for an additional cost, and there are some amenities like bathrooms, changing rooms, lockers, and snacks for purchase.

• Cenote Dos Ojos : Meaning “Two Eyes,” Dos Ojos Cenote is probably one of the most popular cenotes near Tulum featuring two twin cenotes next to each other.  Located about 25 minutes north of Tulum’s city center, Dos Ojos is situated in a more commercialized cenote park, which includes a restaurant and amenities. Guided snorkeling and scuba diving tours are also available.

• Cenote Taak Bi Ha : Cenote Taak Bi Ha is a smaller and less well known cenote near Tulum, which is more of a hidden gem. After descending a steep flight of stairs, you’ll arrive at a beautiful closed cenote with impressive stalactites and rock formations. Cenote Taak Bi Ha is an underground cavern with lights to illuminate the turquoise water and surrounding swimming areas.

• Casa Cenote : Known for its crystal clear emerald water and lush mangroves, Casa Cenote is a long freshwater cenote located just north of Tulum. Casa Cenote is different from traditional cenotes for the fact that it’s more like a long lazy river that feeds directly into the sea.  At Casa Cenote, you can swim, float, snorkel, or even paddle board in a beautiful natural setting. With its shallow depths and clear water, it’s also an extremely popular spot for beginner scuba divers.

Travelista Tip: When visiting cenotes, be sure to bring biodegradable sunscreen , water shoes , and a quick dry towel .  Regular sunscreen is not permitted. 

4. Ride bikes through the Hotel Zone

If you’re looking for a fun and inexpensive way to explore the beautiful Hotel Zone in Tulum, consider renting a bicycle for a leisurely stroll.

There are several bike shops located near the highway in Tulum Centro, so it’s easy to find one that suits your needs. 

Once you have your bike, simply ride down to the beachfront Hotel Zone and start exploring. You can stroll along the beach road, checking out the various beach clubs, jungle restaurants, and designer boutiques. 

You’ll get a peek at the ocean in some parts, but most of the road is lined on both sides with Tulum hotels , restaurants, and shops–all instagrammable of course!

5. Go shopping at designer boutiques

If you’re looking to do some shopping while you’re in Tulum, be sure to check out the trendy designer boutiques in the beachfront Hotel Zone. 

You’ll find everything from designer swimwear and beachwear to upscale souvenirs and home accents. Most of the items are handmade and sustainable, so they come with a bit of a higher price tag. 

But each item is made with Tulum’s unique design aesthetic so you’ll be able to take home some one-of-a-kind items. 

6. Break a sweat at the Tulum Jungle Gym

Another popular tourist attraction in Tulum for active travelers is the Tulum Jungle Gym , which is a beachfront gym where all weights and exercise equipment are made from wood and earthy materials.   

This oceanfront workout zone is a great place for a one-of-a-kind outdoor workout or even a quick photo op!  It’s probably one of the most unique gyms you’ll find in Mexico.

7. Snap some Instagram photos

Another fun activity in Tulum is to take some Instagram photos.  Tulum is basically an Instagrammer’s paradise and attracts bloggers and social media influencers from all over the world.

With unique photo ops at nearly every turn, you’ll never run out of things to capture. 

Popular Instagram photo locations include the wooden swings at Matcha Mama, the “Follow That Dream” sign, and the “Ven a la Luz” art installation at Ahau Tulum hotel. 

No matter where you go, you’re sure to get some amazing shots that perfectly capture the fun tropical vibe of this bohemian destination.

8. Explore Tulum Pueblo

If you’re looking for a more authentic Tulum experience, head to the downtown area known as Tulum Pueblo.

Located about 3 miles from the beach, this area is closer to restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and grocery stores. 

While it may not be as picturesque as the Hotel Zone, Tulum Pueblo is definitely worth a visit to get to see a more real side of Tulum.

While there, you can dine at local restaurants, grab a drink at a fun bar, or shop for more reasonably priced souvenirs. 

9. Visit Pablo Escobar’s beach mansion

If you’re looking for one of the most unique things to do in Tulum, consider visiting Casa Malca .

This former beach mansion of Pablo Escobar has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind luxury hotel, complete with stunning artwork and unique design elements. 

While the property is one of the best hotels in Tulum , day passes can be purchased for those who want to chill at the property’s beach and explore its incredible features.

Day passes are not cheap but will give you a totally unique experience and great story to tell!

10. Eat at local restaurants

If you want to experience more authentic Mexican food while in Tulum, venture away from the Hotel Zone and check out some of the local restaurants in Tulum Pueblo for tasty tacos, fresh seafood, and other traditional Mexican dishes.

In Tulum Pueblo, you can find some great tacos at Taqueria Honorio or La Taqueria .

You’ll also find food trucks, taco stands, and local restaurants in the area serving more traditional (and more reasonably priced!) Mexican food. 

Best Tulum Tours from Playa del Carmen

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of planning your day and getting around Tulum on your own, consider booking a Tulum tour from Playa del Carmen with transportation included.

If you’re exploring Tulum on your own, check out some of these best places in Tulum for lunch or a healthy treat:

La Taqueria

La Taqueria is a casual yet trendy taco restaurant with a few different locations in Tulum.  You can find locations in Veleta (the residential area of Tulum) or there are a couple locations along the Hotel Zone as well.  

At La Taqueria, you’ll find a trendy outdoor seating area where you can dine al fresco. The menu features classic Mexican dishes like tacos, quesadillas, burritos, fajitas, and nachos.

Plus, you can order craft beer, cocktails, and fresh juices and smoothies. 

Matcha Mama

Matcha Mama is an outdoor smoothie and juice bar serving tropical smoothies, acai bowls, and kombucha. 

All menu items are freshly prepared, plant-based, and gluten-free and offer unique ingredients like bee pollen, amaranth, and maca.

My favorite menu item is the Mango Tango, which comes as a smoothie or a smoothie bowl.  

The colorful presentation of the smoothie and acai bowls is almost too pretty to eat! Plus, its Instagram-worthy swings and signs make it a popular spot for photo ops. 

Similar to Matcha Mama, Raw Love is another health food restaurant and smoothie bar located at the Ahau Tulum hotel .

Menu items include vegan and vegetarian dishes, acai bowls, superfood smoothies, and juices. 

Raw Love can be accessed from the beach so it’s a great spot to stop for a healthy treat if you’re walking down the beach in Tulum. 

Palma Central

For a casual meal in Tulum Pueblo, check out Palma Central , which is a colorful food truck park serving a variety of dishes.

You can order from any of the food trucks and stands in the park which serve a ton of different cuisines like Mexican food, pizza, wings, noodle bowls, and sandwiches. 

Plus, there’s a full service bar where you can order cocktails and local beers.  Be sure to go early as they close at 2PM and reopen at 5PM for dinner and live entertainment.

What to Bring on a Day Trip to Tulum from Playa del Carmen

Here are a few things I would recommend bringing on a day trip to Tulum: 

• Biodegradable Sunscreen : Anytime you are going to be swimming in the ocean or a cenote, you’ll need to wear biodegradable sunscreen as regular sunscreen is not permitted.  You can pick up my favorite brand on Amazon here . 
• Sun Hat : Bring a sun hat to protect your head and shoulders from the sun.  The style in Tulum is very bohemian so you’ll likely see both men and women wearing Fedora style hats like this one . 
• Water bottle : Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.  These collapsible water bottles are a great option to travel with as they can roll up to fit easily in your beach bag, backpack, or suitcase. 
• Belt Bag: I always wear a belt bag when on Tulum or Playa del Carmen excursions to keep my personal belongings safely secured in front of me when walking around.  I personally use and recommend this belt bag to travel safely around Mexico. 
• Comfortable Shoes : Wear comfortable walking shoes or sandals depending on your Tulum excursions. Tulum is very casual and the ground is pretty uneven so I wouldn’t bother wearing heels or nice shoes. 

Tips for Taking a Day Trip to Tulum from Playa del Carmen

Follow these tips to make the most of your experience in Tulum:

• Leave early : If you want to experience Tulum fully, I would recommend getting an early start. Leave Playa del Carmen as early as possible to beat the crowds in Tulum. Plus, you’ll have more free time if you want to do multiple activities. 
• Be prepared for higher prices : When visiting Tulum, you’ll definitely want to prepare yourself for higher prices and some serious sticker shock! You can expect prices in Tulum to be at least 30% higher than in Playa del Carmen for food, drinks, transportation, and minimum consumption charges at beach clubs. 
• Pack sunscreen and a water bottle : You’ll want to pack biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection and a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
• Expect poor cell service : Tulum doesn’t have the best infrastructure so expect to have poor cell service or areas with limited connectivity. My cell service is always spotty whenever I visit Tulum. 
• Bring cash : Because Tulum’s wifi and connectivity is not the best, it can sometimes be difficult to pay for things with a credit card. It’s best to always have enough cash on hand to cover your expenses in case paying with a credit card is not an option.

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about taking a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Tulum:

Absolutely! Tulum is the perfect place for a day trip from Playa del Carmen as it’s only 1 hour away and has plenty of options for activities and excursions whether you want to relax at the beach, get a history lesson at the ancient Mayan Ruins, or take a dip in one of the beautiful cenotes. 

The cost to go from Playa del Carmen to Tulum can vary depending on your chosen transportation method. Public transportation (colectivos) can be as cheap as $50 pesos (~$2.50 USD) or taxis can cost more than $1000 pesos (~$60 USD) each way. 

The closest thing to a shuttle from Playa del Carmen to Tulum would be the ADO bus, which is a large charter style bus that runs between the two towns. 

You can expect a taxi from Playa del Carmen to Tulum to cost around $1000 pesos (~$60 USD) each way.

Uber is currently not safe to use in Tulum. While legislation was passed in January 2023 allowing Uber to operate in the region, it remains dangerous to use Uber or any ride-sharing service. Taxi drivers have always strongly opposed Uber in Mexico , and there have been several reports of violence against Uber drivers and passengers. So even if your Uber app will work, it’s not safe to use Uber in the entire Riviera Maya region of Mexico including Tulum, Playa del Carmen , and Cancun.

Playa del Carmen is located approximately 68 kilometers (42 miles) north of Tulum. The distance between these two cities may seem short, but it’s important to consider factors such as traffic, road conditions, and the mode of transportation you choose.

Before we dive into the different transportation options, it’s essential to plan your journey based on your preferences, budget, and time constraints. With a mere one-hour drive separating these two destinations, there are many similarities between the two towns. Both are situated in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula and both border the Caribbean Sea and are close to fascinating Mayan ruins. But there are a few important differences that you must know which will help you make the best choice between these two idyllic Riviera Maya destinations.

Playa del Carmen is a popular family destination with excellent shopping and lots of activities. It also tends to attract a younger, party crowd who look to combine the beach by day with barhopping and nightclubs after sunset.

Tulum is a little smaller and is popular for those looking for a relaxing destination with a bohemian feel. It’s quieter, with less hustle and bustle, but still has plenty to see and do.

• Playa del Carmen or Tulum: Which Is Better?

There’s not a huge difference in the travel arrangements you would need to make to reach either destination. And for both locations, you should look to book a flight into Cancun International Airport.

Cancun’s airport is Mexico’s second busiest airport, behind Mexico City, and receives a large number of flights every day. Direct flights from the major capital cities of Europe and South America are pretty easy to find, as are flights from the major airports in many US states. Flight times are around five hours from New York, ten hours from London, and eight hours from Brasilia.

Once you have touched down in Mexico and cleared immigration, there’s just the simple task of journeying down the Caribbean coast to your final destination. Playa del Carmen is a little closer to Cancun’s airport than Tulum is, so, naturally, your hotel transfer will be a little quicker.

Playa del Carmen is a little over fifty kilometers from Cancun Airport, and the journey time should be around 45 minutes to an hour. Tulum is about the same distance again from Playa del Carmen, about sixty kilometers farther down the coast, so around 110km from Cancun Airport.

For both destinations, there are a few different options for the journey from the airport: private transfer, shared shuttle, car hire, hotel transfer, and bus.

Private transfers can be made via taxis or minivans, and though it’s not the cheapest option, it’s arguably the most convenient and quickest. A shared shuttle in a minivan will be a little cheaper, but you will have other passengers in the vehicle and will have to make additional stops.

If you have booked an all-inclusive resort, they will probably provide and organize the transportation for you. If you have a valid driver’s license and plan to travel around and explore the area once you arrive, a rental car may be a great idea, as it also includes your transportation back to the airport at the end of your vacation.

The cheapest option would be the bus. The ADO (pronounced ahh-day-oh in Spanish) buses are very comfortable and are a great way of getting from the airport to your chosen destination in a budget-friendly and simple manner. From Tulum, you can easily snorkel or scuba dive in the cenotes, and you will have a unique experience with very few places in the world being comparable to these natural paradises.

In terms of snorkeling, many of the beaches in both Tulum and Playa del Carmen are free from rocks and reefs, and snorkeling will only reveal more sand. However, there are a few rocky sections where fish can be found, and if you have your own mask and snorkel, head to the ends of the beaches for more rocks or look for darker patches from the shore.

There are dive centers in both locations, and they offer day trips out to the better reefs. You don’t need to be a diver to join them, as they will be happy to welcome snorkelers on board too.

In between the two towns, slightly closer to Tulum, is the Xel-Ha Eco-Park . For families, this is a great day out with the chance of some excellent snorkeling in calm and controlled conditions, and the snorkel gear and life vests are included in the admission price. Whilst you can definitely enjoy a family vacation in either location, Playa del Carmen is slightly more geared towards families.

Compared to Tulum, Playa del Carmen is more developed, so it has better access to public and private transportation, as well as shopping, entertainment, and attractions. Playa del Carmen will also have a wider choice of hotels for families, and the average hotel price is a bit lower too, which is particularly pertinent for larger families.

Playa del Carmen is a little more Americanized than Tulum too, so you may find it easier to find familiar food and drinks if your children are still quite young.

On the whole, while both are great destinations and families can have a phenomenal time in either, Playa del Carmen just makes everything that little bit easier when traveling with children, especially the younger ones.

While we all love some beach time on vacation, we don’t all look for the same things from a beach. But fear not; whether you’re looking for a quiet place to lie in the sand with a good book, or prefer an activity-rich beach with a lot going on, both Tulum and Playa del Carmen have plenty of beach options.

You’ll find tropical white sand beaches and warm Caribbean water in both Tulum and Playa del Carmen, and both have very few rocks and coral lying around so they’re pleasant to swim at, and go for long coastal walks.

However as Tulum and Playa del Carmen are so close together and similar when it comes to beaches, which is the better beach destination for you may come down to what specific beaches have to offer.

With that the case, let’s have a quick look at some of the best beaches on offer in both locations:

The Top Three Beaches In Playa del Carmen

1. playacar beach.

A short distance south of the busy ferry terminal is the calm and expansive Playacar Beach. It’s generally considered to be Playa del Carmen’s best beach. The area adjacent to the beach is a gated community and is known for its upmarket residential villas, all-inclusive resorts, and luxury golf clubs. As such, the beach is well-maintained and the golden sand pristine.

2. Playa del Pecado

If you are looking to escape the madding crowds, pack your book and head off to Playa del Pecado. This hidden gem is tucked away at the southern end of Playacar Beach and takes a little bit of effort to reach.

As you head south along Playacar Beach, the backdrop changes from villas and resorts to verdant jungle. After an easy clamber over a rocky patch, you will reach the secluded and peaceful Playa del Pecado—time to apply some sunscreen and lose yourself in your vacation book.

3. Playa Xpu Ha

If lying stock-still in the sand is not for you, and you prefer a few beach activities and watersports, head to Playa Xpu Ha.

Kayaks, jet skis, windsurfing, and kitesurfing are all options for the more active beach-goer. There’s also good snorkeling, but you should bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins. This beach also requires a little bit of effort to reach, as it’s about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen’s bustling center.

The Top Three Beaches In Tulum

1. playa paraiso.

For a classic soft-sand Caribbean beach with tranquil waters and fluttering palm trees, head to Playa Paraiso in the center of Tulum’s coastal area.

The inviting white sand and turquoise waters, backed by a few restaurants and an eponymous beach club, make it an excellent choice for a beach day in Tulum. The beach club can be a good place to make an early start on the day’s partying, and for a bit more peace and quiet, walk to the southern end of the beach.

2. El Ultimo Maya Beach

For a more secluded option, head to El Ultimo Maya Beach, around ten kilometers to the south of Playa Paraiso.

There’s a simple restaurant, and a large sand dune obscures the view of the beach from the road. As you climb over the sand dune, a sweeping, wild, and rugged beach is revealed. It’s a great spot for a peaceful day at the beach with a good book.

3. Ahau Tulum Beach

For the more active-minded, head to Ahau Tulum Beach. To access the beach, look for the Ven a la Luz (raw love) wooden sculpture—a 10m-tall carving of a person prying open their chest—and walk through the open chest to follow the path to the golden sand.

Paddleboarders, kiteboarders, and surfers enjoy this beach – just don’t forget the sunscreen before heading out to enjoy the welcoming waves.

One of Mexico’s best-known attractions are the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza (see picture below), and luckily it’s close to both Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people, and its ruins are now a major tourist attraction and definitely worth a visit while you’re in the Yucatan Peninsula. Luckily you can freely visit the ruins of Chichen Itza, considered as one of the Modern 7 Wonders of the World, from both Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

It should be pretty easy to join a tour and the journey time will be quite similar from both towns, albeit a little longer from Playa del Carmen.

If a two-hour-plus journey through the Yucatan jungle doesn’t float your boat, there is also a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city on the edge of Tulum where you can find the so-called Tulum ruins.

Obviously, the Tulum ruins are much easier to visit from Tulum, but it is also relatively straightforward from Playa del Carmen. From Playa del Carmen, instead of a two-hour drive through the jungle to reach Chichen Itza, a forty-five-minute drive along the coast will bring you to Tulum and allow you to explore the cultural ruins and explore Tulum itself—it’s a great day trip from Playa del Carmen.

However due to that, and the fact Chichen Itza is closer to Tulum as well, the reality is Mayan culture and history is a little easier and simpler to access when vacationing in Tulum.

If vacation time means party time to you, then maybe Playa del Carmen will likely be the better choice. Whilst there are plenty of bars and clubs in Tulum too, the nightlife in Playa del Carmen is just that bit more bolder, brighter, and larger.

That’s not to say Playa del Carmen’s after-dark party scene is like Mexico’s party capital of Cancun – it’s much more laid back. But the bar scene is very good, and there’s plenty of places for a party. The bars, clubs, and shops are quite close together too, so it’s easy to bar hop during the evening.

Although Tulum is probably not as nightlife centric as Playa del Carmen, there are several great evening spots. One of our favorites is Batey Mojito and Guarapo Bar . This bar has an energetic vibe, beer garden, and live music – the different flavored mojitos are delicious.

Another favorite is Xibalbar . Expect great service and music at this rooftop bar, as well as a nice selection of food and drinks, and the best hookah in the city. It’s usually open until 1am.

In recent years, Mexico has seen an ever-increasing influx of digital nomads and tourists, mainly from the United States and Canada. With its tropical climate, stunning landscapes, an affordable cost of living, and reliable WiFi, it’s easy to understand why.

Factor in the ease of obtaining a longer-term visa, especially for US and Canadian passport holders, and Playa del Carmen and Tulum become even more appealing for digital nomads and remote workers.

Of the two destinations, the general consensus is that Playa del Carmen is better suited to the digital nomad lifestyle. The bigger city has better infrastructure and more modern conveniences than Tulum. There are more co-working options in Playa del Carmen than in Tulum, and the internet speed is a little faster and more reliable.

Playa del Carmen also has better mobile coverage, whilst some people bemoan the internet connectivity in Tulum’s hotel zone.

Tulum’s center does have more reliable connectivity and internet speeds than the hotel zone, but overall, the internet is better in Playa del Carmen.

As a general statement, Tulum can prove a little more expensive than Playa del Carmen.

Being larger, Playa del Carmen has more accommodation options, more restaurants, and more bars. More competition usually translates to lower prices. And with more scope for shopping around in Playa del Carmen, you should be able to find accommodation to suit your budget more easily than in Tulum.

Aside from accommodation, food prices are also a bit more affordable in Playa del Carmen. There are also many more options for eating local Mexican food in Playa del Carmen, and this can help keep the costs down too.

Tulum can be a bit pricey in certain establishments, with food prices comparable to those in the United States in many instances. However, it is still possible to find smaller, cheaper places to enjoy some excellent food too.

In terms of activities, it depends to a certain extent on what you want to do, but many activities, such as paddleboarding, would be similar in either location. Day trips to local attractions, such as Chichen Itza, would be comparable in price due to the similar distances, but a trip to Cozumel Island will undoubtedly be less expensive from Playa del Carmen.

Since Playa del Carmen and Tulum are so close to one another, their climates and weather patterns are pretty much the same. Be aware that there are distinct peak and low seasons, even though both can be considered year-round destinations.

The period from December to April is generally regarded as the high season. It’s the time of year when the weather is at its best, but you should also prepare for larger crowds and more expensive accommodation. However, by making reservations outside of Christmas and Spring Break, you can avoid the biggest crowds during these times of year.

To receive the greatest deals during the busy season, it’s advisable to make your reservations well in advance of the dates you intend to travel. The ideal ocean conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling are also at this time of year.

The months of May to June and September to November are commonly thought of as the low season. The weather can be a little wetter during these months and the temperatures can soar. Discounts on hotels, tours, and club cover charges can be found during the low season, which also delivers lower pricing. However, a hurricane, coupled with torrential rain and big waves, is possible at this time of year.

Tulum or Playa del Carmen: Which Is Better?

At the risk of over-simplifying these two diverse and different destinations, a very general summary would be to say it comes down to a choice between the urban chic of Playa del Carmen and the bohemian chic of Tulum.

Playa del Carmen is a little busier and more bustling than its neighbor just down the coast, and there’s more choice for hotels, bars, restaurants, and things to do.

But that’s not to paint Tulum as a barren desert with little going on. The idea of Tulum as an off-the-beaten-track backpacking destination may be in the past, but the chilled, independent traveler vibe still remains.

Both offer the chance to enjoy stunning Caribbean beaches, excellent food, and the opportunity to venture out to visit the iconic Chichen Itza ruins. While families and digital nomads may prefer the better infrastructure and amenities in Playa del Carmen, couples, honeymooners, and people looking for a chilled vacation may well prefer Tulum.

But do not fret – whichever way you decide, you are sure to have an excellent, sun-kissed vacation is a fantastic part of the world – enjoy!

Despite being less than an hour’s drive from each other, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are as different as they are alike. This year we’ve spent a lot of time vacationing in Tulum and Playa del Carmen. We know how hard it can be to choose between the two. Need some help deciding which is best for you? Here’s our 2023 comparison of vacationing in Tulum vs. Playa del Carmen. 

Tulum vs. Playa del Carmen

While Tulum and Playa del Carmen are known for their delicious, traditional food and stunning Caribbean beaches, they have stark differences, mainly concerning the general vibe and price point.

Playa del Carmen is ideal for all budgets, from backpackers to bougies. At the same time, Tulum remains one of the most expensive cities in all of Mexico.

Still, if you’re looking for a back-to-nature escape with verdant jungle views, Tulum is your best bet. Playa del Carmen will appeal to those who enjoy amenities and city breaks while looking for all the charms of a typical Mexican town.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum are two of the most popular destinations in the Riviera Maya. Situated along the coast, although not far from the jungles tendrils, these coastal hubs require a bit of forethought to navigate. Here are some of our favorite ways to get to and around Tulum and Playa del Carmen and some key differences between the two. 

Playa del Carmen is a fast-growing urban hot spot carved out of the jungle, while Tulum still embraces its jungle roots. While Tulum and Playa del Carmen are in similar locations in the Mayan Riviera, sandwiched between a lush jungle and a beautiful coastline, Tulum embraces its wild roots.

At the same time, Playa del Carmen is more devoted to city life. In perspective, Tulum has a population of around 30,000 year-round residents. At the same time, Playa del Carmen is home to a whopping 250,000 people.

Tulum is one of our favorite destinations in Mexico because of its laid-back and free-spirited vibe. The bohemian, boutique atmosphere has attracted those seeking serenity and a spiritual connection in nature; we can’t deny this serene energy is evident! Tulum is a more secluded, eco/wellness destination than the busy cityscape of Playa del Carmen.

If you’re looking for unique excursions, Tulum is an excellent destination with ancient Mayan ruins, indigo cenotes, and jungle treks nearby. Pristine beaches and wildlife are also plentiful.

Playa del Carmen is a dynamic destination with opulent, all-inclusive resorts and cool hostels. If you’re looking for a beachfront city with endless restaurants and bars, you’ve found the right place! Playa del Carmen isn’t far from the Yucatan Peninsula’s adventures, making it a versatile locale.

Getting There

Getting to Tulum and Playa del Carmen is straightforward. Still, a little planning and forethought will go a long way, as both cities are about an hour from the nearest airport. We highly recommend flying into Cancun International Airport, about 1 ½ hours from Tulum and 50 minutes from Playa del Carmen.

You’ll want to arrange your onward travel well in advance. A taxi costs about $70 to reach Playa del Carmen and over $100 to Tulum, while the ADO bus is a mere $10 to Playa del Carmen and around $14 to Tulum. There is also an airport shuttle option to both cities that costs around $70. Our preference is the airport shuttle as it’s a great mixture of affordability and drops you right at the entrance to your accommodations. 

Getting Around

Getting around Tulum and Playa del Carmen is one of the stark differences between the two locations. While one is very walkable and easy to get around, the other isn’t easily explored unless by bike. Traffic can be a bear in both cities, making renting a car more or less a headache.

Tulum isn’t a very walkable destination unless you plan to spend your time solely in the city center or along the beach. Traffic between these two neighborhoods can be annoyingly dense. The best way to get around is by renting a bike or other human-powered transportation. Cruising the lush palm-covered paths with the ocean in sight is truly a spiritual experience.

You’ll find bike rentals all over Tulum, but our favorite is Ola Bike Tulum. Their prices are incredibly affordable, the staff is accommodating, and they even provide a Whatsapp number if you have any issues while out and about. Taxis are common in Tulum but know that this certainly isn’t the fastest mode of transportation, and we prefer biking as the best mode of transportation for getting around the city.

Playa del Carmen couldn’t be easier to navigate, the best way being on foot. The city is highly walkable. No matter where you stay, you’re only a short stroll from bars, beaches, and delicious restaurants. Although you might be tempted to rent a car to explore further flung ruins and cenotes, parking in Playa del Carmen can be challenging. Taxis are also common and typically inexpensive here, making it even easier to get around!

Both Tulum and Playa del Carmen have beautiful beaches.

Tulum’s pristine, uncrowded, powdered sugar beaches and calm, turquoise waters are undeniably stunning. The quintessential Mexican beach aesthetic goes one step further with the Tulum ruins overlooking the most famous strip of sand in town, Playa Ruinas. Another popular beach in Tulum is the more rugged but less visited beach of Las Palmas. Tulum Public Beach also offers an equally gorgeous coastline with amenities like palapas and endless margaritas.

Playa del Carmen is also a great destination for Caribbean beaches and warm aqua waters. However, its beaches are known to be more narrow due to erosion and much more crowded.

If you’re a beach bum who loves to lounge in the sand and doesn’t mind people-watching, Playa del Carmen’s coast is still a fantastic option. The most popular beaches in Playa del Carmen are Playa Mamitas and Playa Incluyente. Here you can visit several beach clubs like INTI, Señor Frogs, and Mamitas Beach Club to get the whole experience.

Each has a different vibe, from a party atmosphere to a more sophisticated one. Our favorite beach is Punta Esmeralda, especially if you’re looking for a little more secluded beach.

Tulum and Playa del Carmen are two of the most exciting destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula and in Quintana Roo. Whether you’re looking to peruse trendy boutiques, scuba dive with sea turtles, or climb crumbling Mayan ruins, there’s something for everyone in these beach towns.

Tulum’s location along some of the best beaches in the Riviera Maya and a more remote jungle area has created a mecca for fun and adventurous activities.

The city has its own set of famous oceanfront ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Some of the best cenotes in the area include El Gran Cenote and Cenote Dos Ojos. Suppose you’re looking for more off-the-beaten-path cenotes. In that case, we highly recommend seeking a cenote tour that will take you deep into the jungle and away from the more tourist-frequented hot spots.

We took a private tour of three different cenotes based on which specific ones we were interested in, and it was an incredible time and gave us the privacy and more off-the-beaten-path feel we were looking for.

The gorgeous Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is only 20 minutes from Tulum and one of the most unspoiled natural areas on the Yucatan Peninsula, featuring dense mangrove forests and staggeringly blue water.

Playa del Carmen also has a wide variety of activities centered on shopping and watersports. However, the famous attractions of the Riviera Maya aren’t more than a few hours away. Our top recommendations are La Quinta Avenida for a shopping spree, a snorkeling expedition to Akumal, a jet ski in the idyllic Caribbean Sea, or a day trip to the Xcaret theme park.

Things to do around Playa del Carmen can feel heavily touristed but are a fun part of the trip nonetheless.

Tulum and Playa del Carmen are only about an hour from each other. Day trips are relatively similar and focus on the area’s plentiful cenotes, Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza, and beach activities like snorkeling and scuba diving.

When it comes to food and drink along the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen has more variety of restaurants, from fine dining to simple street stalls. In contrast, Tulum is centered on health-focused, upscale fare, especially vegan and vegetarian options.

Tulum’s dedication to wellness and the eco-friendly vibe is reflected in the restaurants and bars you’ll find. The eateries here are of a bit higher caliber than most of what you’ll find in Playa del Carmen.

In the center of town, some of the best places to grab a bite include Cetli, Taqueria la Chiapaneca, and Taquería Honoro.

At Tulum Beach, the fine dining scene revs up a notch with incredible restaurants like Gitano, Bak, and Rosa Negra.

Tulum’s city center and beach neighborhoods have a great selection of restaurants. Still, we typically prefer heading to the beach for an upscale night out, and we head to town for more of a casual dining experience. Tulum is also well known for its smoothie and juice bars.

On the flip side, Playa del Carmen has everything, from typical American fast food like Mcdonald’s to fine dining at trendy Mexican restaurants like the Instagram-worthy Alux. Street food stalls and local hole-in-the-walls are complemented by mid-range spots serving everything from American fare to ramen and sushi. If you love seafood, you must stop by Las Hijas de la Tostada for fresh, traditional cuisine.

You’ll be able to find mouth-watering, traditional Mexican cuisine in both towns. However, we think Playa del Carmen seems to have a bit more variety. Tulum’s city center is the best spot to search for Yucatan fare. At the same time, you’ll be able to find them virtually around every corner in Playa del Carmen.

Look for specialties like cochinita pibil, pork that marinates and stews for hours, and sopa de lima, a soup made from lime juice and chicken.

Nightlife in Mexico’s Riviera Maya is at a premium. You can find everything from local cantinas to full-blown Playa del Carmen nightclubs. Still, if you want to party hard and let loose, there’s an obvious winner. Sleepy Tulum can’t compete with the radiant bar and club scene in Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen comes alive at night with hip bars, hookah cafes, and clubs galore. The raucous parties at popular nightclubs like Coco Bongo, La Vaquita, and Mandala are legendary and what many travelers specifically come to this section of the Riviera Maya for. There is an endless array of bars, both oceanfront and within the city.

Although Tulum is decidedly more devoted to spirituality, jungle excursions, and relaxation, you’ll still find everything from casual beachside bars to clubs, just not quite in the abundance you might see in Playa del Carmen. We love Papaya Playa Project and Kiki for a true nightclub scene and Habitas or Ciel Rose Sunset Bar for your quintessential bar hangout.

Tulum’s least expensive accommodations will be in the city center. This area of town may feel far from the ocean, but it is only 17 minutes by bike and 12 minutes by taxi away from the beach, meaning that it’s just a quick trip away.

In fact, we bike back and forth between town often! For those who want to stay in the more popular Tulum beach area, you’re looking to spend a minimum of $100 a night. Although Tulum is more pricey, you’ll be rewarded with unique, bohemian accommodation options.

One of our favorite Tulum experiences was staying in a treehouse hotel . Such an unforgettable memory and something you can only do in a destination like Tulum. This is just one of the things that makes Tulum so unique, in our opinion.

Playa del Carmen has much broader accommodation options, from hostels with co-working spaces to luxurious oceanfront resorts. In fact, most places to stay in Playa del Carmen are traditional hotels, backpacker hostels, or resorts like the ultra-luxe Grand Velas Riviera Maya. You won’t find unique accommodation options like treehouses or secluded beachfront huts like you can in Tulum.

Ultimately, where to stay in Tulum and Playa del Carmen comes down to price and what vibe you’re going for.

On a strict budget? You might be shocked by the cost of accommodation in Tulum and find it challenging to find a suitable place in your price range. Your best bet is Playa del Carmen!

Looking to stay in a secluded jungle paradise with a private pool? You’ll be spoiled for choice in Tulum.

The costs between Tulum and Playa del Carmen can be vastly different. Tulum is more expensive than Playa del Carmen by a landslide, and you can expect American prices or even higher.

Playa del Carmen can accommodate virtually any budget and appeals to everyone, including those on a more stringent budget and those looking to splash out.

The average price per night in peak season for Playa del Carmen can be as low as $10 for a hostel. Tulum is similarly priced for bare-bones dorms at around $15 a night in high season.

Where the real difference shows is in the price of private rooms. It would be difficult to find something less than $100 a night in Tulum during peak season, while Playa del Carmen offers private options for as little as $30.

From our experience, you’ll want to book your accommodation well in advance in the high season, from November to April, to ensure you can snag the best hotels and AirBNBs.

Food and drink prices are similar, although Tulum will be slightly more expensive than Playa del Carmen. We notice that Playa del Carmen typically has less expensive options than Tulum.

Beach chair rentals will run you roughly the same price in both towns.

However, Tulum taxis can be drastically more costly than Playa del Carmen. Overall, you can expect that Tulum will be about 20% more expensive than Playa del Carmen. You’re paying more for Tulum’s aesthetic and general vibe, which explains that slight price hike.

Many first-time visitors to Mexico have questions and concerns about their safety, and rightly so! Riviera Maya has seen a recent uptick in gang-related crime, stretching from Cancun to Tulum.

Security in the area has increased in relation to this shift, and you’ll probably see police and military presence during your stay. However, this isn’t uncommon in any corner of Mexico.

Safety in Tulum and Playa del Carmen is comparable. However, Tulum has seen a particular increase in violent crime in recent years, mainly in the city center. As recently as 2021, two travelers were killed in the crossfire of a gang-related incident in Tulum’s city center.

While no major incidents of quite the same magnitude against tourists have occurred in Playa del Carmen, the city is certainly not immune to petty and violent crime.

The reality is that most visitors will never come in contact with crime in Mexico. Still, it’s always good to keep your wits about you when traveling somewhere unfamiliar.

Drug use is the commonality of most violence in Mexico, making it even more important for visitors to refrain from partaking in illicit activities while on vacation, as this usually leads to violence against tourists. Most cities in Mexico are as safe as many major American cities. Check your country’s travel warnings for the most up-to-date information regarding safety in Mexico.

Whether you choose the cerulean, ruin-capped beaches of Tulum, or the dynamic city scene of Playa del Carmen, you’re bound to have an incredible time in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Go the budget route in Playa and take part in its legendary nightlife, or splurge for a relaxing getaway surrounded by nature in Tulum. You can’t go wrong with either destination! Overall, Tulum will always be our first choice because of its easy-going ambiance and connection to nature while having incredible accommodations and an array of exciting restaurants.

If you’re familiar with Riviera Maya, you’ve definitely heard of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. In the past few decades, these two towns have become some of the hottest tourist destinations in the world.

That being said, these towns are so close and yet so different, by far. Let’s see how!

Ideally, you should visit both of them if you have the time (I highly recommend you do so), but some of us don’t get that kind of vacation time.

Playa del Carmen vs Tulum – Playa del Carmen features and highlights

Both Playa del Carmen and Tulum are similar in the way that they’re relatively young towns that became prominent in the 90s.

Both of these towns are also famous for their gorgeous beaches. But enough with the similarities, you came here to know the differences.

To start off, the biggest difference between these two is the size and population. Playa del Carmen is noticeably larger on both of these fronts and, thanks to being developed much more, will provide you with all the amenities and luxuries you can expect from a resort town.

Expect an urban vibe with plenty of boutique and all-inclusive hotels , shopping malls, a very active nightlife, and partying scene, and much more.

Another thing to note about Playa del Carmen is that it’s very walkable, the town and its many beaches are basically nestled together so you can easily walk almost everywhere you like.

Let’s cover the highlights and other features of Playa del Carmen point by point.

Highlights of Playa del Carmen

✅ Playa del Carmen doesn’t have an airport nearby, but it’s located between the two international airports, Cancun’s and the brand-new Tulum International Airport. Cancun is still the closest one, though.

✅ Playa del Carmen is much more urban and very developed. The town has all the luxuries you can expect from a resort town. A huge plus of all this development is that the beaches are very accessible from the downtown area in Playa del Carmen .

✅ Playa del Carmen is also very walkable. A car will be handy, but not needed like it is in Tulum. Whether you want to go to the beach, a bar, a restaurant, or what have you, everything is situated very close to each other.

✅ The town offers great shopping opportunities. There are two large shopping malls in Playa del Carmen and plenty of small boutiques for all kinds of budgets.

✅ Whether you’re on a budget and looking to save some money, or you’re looking to live in the lap of luxury during your stay, Playa del Carmen has great options for both.

There are plenty of all-inclusive hotels, boutique hotels, and private accommodation options available to suit tourists’ needs. In this regard, this town is more budget-friendly when compared to Tulum.

✅ If you’re someone who loves nightlife and partying, Playa del Carmen has a more active nightlife scene; there are plenty of bars, dance clubs, rooftop lounges, and much more.

✅ You can also take a ferry from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel , which is very popular for its watersport activities.

✅ Thanks to the many restaurants, there are plenty of options when it comes to food. Whether you want Mexican cuisine or international you’ll easily be able to find it here at a walking distance to everything.

✅ Most people speak English very fluently and you won’t need to use Spanish. However I still recommend you learn some basic phrases if you’re going to be visiting the area. In playa del Carmen there are many Spanish schools that you can attend.

✅ There are plenty of activities available for everyone. Whether you’re college-aged and just want to party, a couple on a honeymoon, or want to visit with your whole family (kids included), you’ll be able to find activities that suit all age ranges.

✅ If you’re someone to whom nature and wildlife matter a lot, Playa del Carmen might not be the town for you.

On the other hand, if you’re up for exploring underwater, the town offers excellent snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities; Cozumel will get you access to the Mesoamerican Reef, which is the second-largest reef in the world.

The negative side of Playa del Carmen (compared to Tulum)

🔴 Since Playa del Carmen has no airport, you’ll have to fly to the closest one which is Cancun International Airport. Find out how to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen hassle-free.

🔴 Playa is much more urban when compared to Tulum . On the plus side, you get much more amenities and staying options in Playa. On the downside, if you’re looking for a more laidback, relaxed, and bohemian vibe, you won’t find it here.

🔴 Thousands of college students head to Mexico for their spring break, and Playa del Carmen is known as a party town. In case you visit during March and April, you won’t be able to enjoy the quiet vacation that you were hoping for.

🔴 Due to the area being more developed, the beaches in Playa are narrower and not as scenic as the ones in Tulum. Depending on the season you go in, you’ll also find the beaches more crowded.

🔴 As mentioned earlier, if you’re a fan of eco-friendly lodgings, nature, and wildlife, Tulum would be much better suited for you.

🔴 Due to Playa being more popular, you’ll also encounter far more people trying to sell you stuff when you’re out and about.

Playa del Carmen vs Tulum – Tulum features and highlights

By now, you know that Playa offers an urban atmosphere (assuming you’ve been reading thus far and didn’t skip to this section). Tulum, on the other hand, has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a boho-chic, small-town atmosphere focused on ecotourism, Tulum is for you. At the time of writing this, there are no all-inclusive hotels in Tulum , though you’ll be able to find plenty of boutique hotels.

Generally, accommodations are also priced higher when compared to Playa del Carmen.

The beaches on Tulum are much more picturesque when compared to Playa del Carmen. However, Tulum isn’t very walkable. If you’re staying in Downtown Tulum, you’ll have to rent a car, get a cab ride, or bike to the beaches.

The same goes for if you’re staying at a beach resort and want to visit downtown.

Highlights of Tulum

✅ Tulum has some of the best beaches in Mexico . (actually a very long uninterrupted one).They do get crowded sometimes, but due to the sheer size of the coastline, it’s pretty easy to find a place where you can just enjoy the sights and sunbathe on your own.

✅ The beaches in Tulum are also much more peaceful and picturesque compared to those in Playa. Technically, Tulum just has one long, unbroken strip of a single beach, and no matter which season it is, you can find a quiet spot to relax in.

✅ With a population of only around 46,000, Tulum has a very bohemian, laid-back, and relaxing vibe . The town is surrounded by natural beauty and the focus is on eco-tourism.

✅ Despite not being as populated, Tulum has a very active nightlife , mainly in downtown along the main road.

✅ Apart from the main road downtown, Tulum is not very walkable in general . You’ll need to rent a bike or use taxis to go to and from the beach.

✅ You can benefit from the new Tulum International Airport .

The same goes for if you’re staying somewhere in downtown that’s not close to the main road, you’ll have difficulty finding taxis so you’ll have to rent a bike.

✅ Tulum is perfect for foodies, with plenty of fine dining experiences available . In the hotel zone, you’ll find gourmet options from Micheline star chefs. Downton Tulum will also give you quite a few options on that front, from authentic Mexican food to Italian cuisine and much more.

✅ One of the major tourist attractions (that I recommend visiting) in Tulum is the famous Mayan ruins . They’re fairly easy to get to and offer beautiful cliff views over the Caribbean Sea.

✅ Tulum is also more peaceful during the spring break parties season. Almost all of the parties are focused on Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and you’ll be able to have a much better time here.

✅ The spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere is situated just an hour south of Tulum. I highly recommend going there and taking a guided boat tour.

The cons of Tulum in comparison with Playa del Carmen

🔴 On average, a vacation in Tulum will be noticeably more expensive if you plan on staying in a hotel; expect to pay about 20-30 more.

As a rule of thumb, the closer your accommodation is to the beach, the more you should expect to pay. This isn’t an issue in Playa, as the town is intertwined with its beaches.

🔴 Staying on a budget and having easy access to the beach are mutually exclusive in Tulum for now. That’s not to say that you can’t find budget lodgings, there are cheap hostels available, but those will most likely be in Downtown Tulum and you’ll have to either bike or get a cab to the beaches.

🔴 If you’re used to the all-inclusive experience on your vacations, you should know that it’s not easy to find in Tulum. The accommodations in Tulum are more unique and upscale.

🔴 Although in Tulum there are many developments and apartments are growing as fast as mushrooms in the rainy season, It still has a laidback feel.

This becomes very apparent when you’re staying in the downtown area and further away from the main road.

The further you get from the main road, the more roads are unpaved and the messier it becomes, which could also appear cool. See it to believe it.

Playa del Carmen vs Tulum – Which one is safer?

Both Playa del Carmen and Tulum are very safe towns. Being popular tourist destinations, there is a high presence of police and national guard around these areas to keep things peaceful.

That being said, you should use common sense and practice some general safety tips.

Make sure to keep an eye on your belongings no matter where you go and don’t wander far from them. That includes not leaving your equipment on the beach while you go for a swim. It’s also a good idea to keep your bling locked away in the hotel room safe.

Also, when you go out at night, stick to well-lit areas and avoid secluded streets. At night, always get a cab to go from point A to B.

This is much more of an issue in Tulum, where the road going from downtown to the beach gets very deserted at night and the inner streets of Downtown Tulum also become a ghost town.

Playa del Carmen vs Tulum – Weather

Since Playa del Carmen and Tulum are situated only about 50 minutes away from each other, the weather isn’t going to differ much (if at all) from one place to the other.

The only thing to keep in mind is the high, low, and shoulder seasons.

Typically, the high season starts in December and continues until April; you’ll get great weather during these months with low temperatures and humidity, not to mention little to no rain. It’s the best time to visit but you’ll also encounter more crowds and prices for accommodations will be quite high.

The shoulder and low seasons comprise months from May to November and are great for saving money on your trip. Hotel rates and airfare will be at their lowest during this period.

May, which falls in the shoulder season, is a popular month for couples on their honeymoon to visit these towns.

Tulum vs Playa del Carmen – What do they have in common?

There are many good things that both Mexican beach towns have in common.

• Both towns are also very close to Akumal beach where you can see and swim with giant sea turtles and Xpu-ha which are some of the best beaches in Mexico
• Both are close to the best cenotes of the Riviera Maya such as Cenote Azul, Cenote Tak-bi-ha, and Cenote Cristalino which are halfway between the two towns. However, there are many cenotes near Tulum that are closer than to Playa del Carmen
• Both have amazing hotels and vacation rentals to choose from.
• Both have incredible Restaurants for any budget and taste
• Both Tulum and Playa del Carmen have a great expat and digital nomads community with many co-working spaces and cute cafes where to work from

Final thoughts on Playa del Carmen vs Tulum – Which one to choose?

To be honest, since both towns are barely an hour away from each other, you should definitely visit and spend some time in both. They offer two very different but fun atmospheres that are worth experiencing on your own.

That being said, I understand that sometimes you might only get the time to explore one, so you have to choose. It comes right down to this; if you’re an active person who’s fond of the urban life and the amenities it offers, Playa del Carmen is for you.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who’s looking to get away from the busyness of urban life to enjoy fine dining experiences, bohemian vibes, and a spectacular beach, pick Tulum.

2. MUSA underwater museum In Isla Mujeres

Known for its incredible coral reefs, the island of Cozumel offers some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. This Mexican island is not only home to amazing coral reefs but offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and abundant marine life. 4. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Located in Mexico’s Caribbean, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a perfect place to escape touristy places in the region and spend time snorkeling and wildlife watching. 

A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site , and one of the biggest protected habitats in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, Sian Ka’an is translated as “Entrance to the Sky” from the Mayan language. Sian Ka’an is home to dolphins, monkeys, manatees, manta rays, and many species of birds and fish. 

Visiting Sian Ka’an is possible only with a guided tour. You can take a tour from Tulum or Playa Del Carmen, some of the most popular destinations in Mexico’s Rivera Maya, or take a dirt road from Tulum to Punta Allen, a small town near Sian Ka’an from where you can catch a boat tour with one of the local operators.

5. Snorkeling in Belize

Belize is a great place to snorkel because of its Barrier Reef system. The reef protects the coast from large waves, making the water calmer and clearer. There are also many different types of coral and fish that can be found in Belize’s waters.

6. Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a laid-back island just off the coast of Belize. The motto of Caye Caulker is “go slow” and it couldn’t fit better, as there are no cars on this small island. To get to Caye Caulker you need to take a speed boat from Belize City, for around one hour.

The marine life just off Caye Caulker is incredible. You can see so many different fish here, as well as sting and manta rays, reef sharks, manatees, and turtles. Usually, the guide will go with you in the water and point out the different types of fish or eels.

The corals in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where most tours will go, are pretty special. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier in Australia, so there is plenty to see here besides the fish.

7. Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs), Cuba

Cuba has some of the clearest water in the Caribbean and it has an amazing history too.  When you snorkel the beaches off Playa Larga and Playa Giron and you’ll be seeing history too.   

The beaches offshore from Playa Giron are particularly good for snorkeling.  There’s an abundance of fish and shallow depths until you encounter a great wall that you can see some more fish from (you’ll have to dive to see more), and there’s an amazing sense of history here too.

There are various great places for snorkeling around the island. And the best thing about snorkeling in Curaçao is the fact you don’t need a boat to go anywhere. You can simply walk straight from the beach and you will find mesmerizing underwater life right where you are. 

Curaçao can get quite windy, so the best snorkeling spots are those which are protected from the wind, usually on the North and southwest side of the island. 

Some of the best beaches include Playa Lagun, Grote Knip, Kleine Knip, Tugboat Beach (where you can snorkel around a sunken tugboat), and Playa Forti.

9. Culebra Island, Puerto Rico

One of the best things to do in Puerto Rico is snorkeling on Culebra Island. Culebra is a small island off the east coast of the main island. It is most famous for Flamenco Beach, which is commonly listed as one of the best beaches in the world.

Turks and Caicos are known for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear water, making it a popular destination for snorkeling. 13. Salt Cay

The tiny island of Salt Cay in Turks and Caicos is just 2.6 square miles in size and has a population of just around 100 people. Despite its small size, Salt Cay offers a variety of fantastic snorkeling experiences!

However, one of the coolest things to do in Turks and Caicos is to snorkel with humpback whales! And the place to do this is Salt Cay. You will need to hire a captain to take you out for this snorkeling experience, but it is hands down one of the most incredible things I’ve ever done.

14. Smith Reef

If you’re looking for a snorkeling spot in Turks and Caicos, you won’t have to look too far. The island of Providenciales (or “Provo” as the locals call it) is home to tons of places to get in the water and swim with the fishies! Some spots are simply right off the beach, which is great since you can walk right in and snorkel instead of booking a tour and spending money (this country isn’t cheap!)

Smith Reef is one of those spots where you can don your snorkel and swim for free right off the beach. Hop in the refreshing and stunningly blue waters and you’ll see an array of colorful fish and reefs, turtles wading about, and even massive eagle rays floating by!

15. Virgin Islands

Do you want to see what lies beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Virgin Islands? If so, then you need to go snorkeling! Snorkeling is a great way to explore the amazing marine life that calls these islands home.

The US Virgin Islands,  St. Thomas, St Croix,  and St. John are excellent places for snorkeling in the Caribbean. You don’t even have to take a boat or an excursion to do it. There are several beaches with great snorkeling within swimming distance of shore.

17. The British Virgin Islands

Although Norman Island is one of the closest to the main island of Tortola, the only way to arrive ashore is via private boat. As there are no public ferries, only those on a BVI sailing excursion or booking a tour can explore the underwater wonders here.

Around the bend from the famed Willi-T’s floating bar, three open caves recess into darkness on the island’s western edge. Abundant marine life darts along the walls, and larger fish can be seen hiding in the ravines, waiting for prey to swim within their reach. Sea turtles may also leisurely swim right by you.
