Loveappella Roll Top Maxi Skirt

Best Travel Skirts: Maxi

Maxi skirts are perfect for almost any destination. A long skirt is a long time choice for most female travelers. It keeps you feeling girly, cool, and modest, making one great travel maxi skirt.

Although it is easier to style than a midi skirt and is a safer choice than a mini skirt, it usually works well on medium height women or taller women. It tends to cut shorter women in half, and they should opt for a maxi dress instead of a skirt.

Look for maxis with a straighter cut so you don’t have to squeeze excess fabric into your bags. Also, choose wrinkle resistant fabric for a more polished look.

Maxi skirts pair well with lots of different tops, but I prefer a fitted top to balance the fuller and longer skirt. Add a side knot to gather your excess fabric and give a bit of personality to your outfit.

Maxis make versatile travel skirts that are perfect for almost any destination.

Quince 100% Washable Silk Skirt

Best Travel Skirts: Midi

Midi skirts work well for quite a few destinations. Over the last couple of years, the midi-length skirt has made a comeback to the fashion world. It’s my favorite length because of its versatility and vintage look.

Midi skirts normally hit below the knee to mid-calf, similar to a tea-length skirt. Because of its length, it is one of the best travel skirts. It keeps you cool but covers your knees for more restrictive sites or cities. They also work great on hot bus trips to keep your legs off sticky seats.

When selecting a skirt, look for one made from a light material and not prone to wrinkles. Also, to ensure it takes up minimal space in your luggage, avoid bulky skirts with lots of layers.

RipSkirt Hawaii Quick Wrap Athletic Cover-up

Travel Skirts: Mini

Mini skirts are great for tropical climates, beach towns, cruises , and resorts . The mini is a favorite of young women and is the most risky of the travel skirt styles. The culture and weather of your destination should always be your first concern when deciding what to wear.

If you are traveling to a very conservative locale, then your mini is best left at home and you’re better off choosing one of the other travel skirt styles. It can garner unwanted attention and give the wrong impression, but if worn in the appropriate environment, it would be a great addition to your travel wardrobe.

Mini skirts are generally categorized as anything mid thigh and above. They keep you cool and add a feminine touch to your look.

Often, mini skirts work well in large cities for the summer or when paired with tights or leggings in the winter months. Also, look for skirts made with a heavier wool or tweed if you are traveling to a colder area.

Since mini skirts show more leg, a good rule is to cover your top. Sleeveless shirts look great, but try to balance the short bottom with a more modest neckline. Also, tall women should be wary that skirts appear shorter on longer legs.

The mini style can be a great option as a travel skirt where appropriate, and remember to keep it fun but classy.

Thanks for these great articles! What’s the skirt in the very top photo of the article. You don’t seem to list what it is and that’s the kind of skirt I’m looking for. Thank you!

Alex

Hi Jennifer, I am afraid that since it is a stock image we are not sure what the brand is.

Sorry I could not have been of more help.

LB

Thanks for this list. I knew there was going to be something on Amazon that would work for me, but I was never successful in the search. The Midi with pockets you highlighted was just what I was looking for. Thank you!

So glad you found this helpful in your search!

Victoria Boyle

I love the skirt in the first picture, the one by the title. Which skirt is that? Thanks!

Hi Victoria, I am afraid that the image at the top of the article is a stock image so I am not sure of the brand. ?

MC

I did too! TFG, if you EVER find a skirt like that, let us know! The texture disguises lumps I would think, it’s sleek & sexy enough, but looks stretchy. All it needed was a few discreet pockets for travel!

Melissa C.

I love skirts (or even skorts) for travel! I have a black cotton “softspun” knit one from Gap that’s coming on our next travel – it resists wrinkles pretty well, matches everything, feels comfortable.

Nonita Vajor

Some girls think that wearing skirts is not a best choice for travel. They prefer to wear jeans but as you have given information about the benefits of mini, midi and maxi skirts, it prove useful to change girls’ opinion regarding this as it have changed mine because I thought so before reading your post.

alex

Thanks for reading Nonita!

Kathy

I think jeans are great for travel. But when you want a change, dinner out, etc., the maxi skirt (or midi) is a great addition. You can dress it up, or if the weather is too hot for jeans, dress it down a bit for daytime.

leeanne

LOVE this post! and it’s so funny you mention that J Crew skirt as a great midi skirt for travel – I just did a post on Fashion and Travel in Greece and I talked about that skirt as well!! It’s one of my favourites for travelling!

Thanks! Will check out your post!

Ingrid @WorkTravelBalance

I love maxi’s for traveling! Especially when visiting locations where you might be going into temples or churches. It’s a great way to stay conservative and cool.

Totally agree! Where do you get yours?

Brooke

I used to stick to pants when I traveled, but now I’m starting to see the benefits of having more skirts and dresses! Skirts particularly come in handy for countries with squatting toilets, just saying. 😉 They’re also versatile and comfortable. This is a great guide to help women of all different shapes and sizes pick the right skirt for them.

Thanks Brooke! Skirts and dresses make it super easy to feel dressed up without actually making any effort 😉

Phebe Schwartz

I always travel with a black knee-length skirt. It goes with all the tops, can pair with leggings for cooler days, and I can roll the waist to adjust the length if I want it a bit shorter. My favorites are A-line knits, either cotton or linen. And if paired with a black tank or tee, it passes as a dress.

“roll the waist to adjust the length if I want it a bit shorter” Good trick! That’s what i used to do with my skirt’s uniform in high school 😉

Women On The Road

Best Travel Skirt | Midi, Maxi, Lightweight, & With Pockets

Travel skirts are the hot new travel item of clothing but finding the right one can be overwhelming. Here are my top travel skirt picks, along with comparisons of the best ones.

If you think a travel skirt sounds like a nutty item to take on your trip, think again.

I took a “midi” travel skirt with me across Africa for a year, never thinking I’d actually wear it. I usually dislike skirts but – mine was ideal for travel, and I ended up wearing it nearly every day. Plus, travel skirts with pockets give you that extra bit of added convenience and an extra storage compartment. Who doesn’t, love that?

travel pattern skirt

The comparison table below will give you an idea of some of the best travel skirts on the market.

Still need some convincing about travel skirts? Just jump down to the reasons why travel skirts (and dresses) rock!

The best travel skirt

Here’s a comparison of the top travel skirts for women: buying guide, a travel skirt… why, again.

Lots of reasons!

  • Skirts are cool and allow the air to circulate around your legs better than travel pants (trousers, if you’re from the UK). And if it’s cold weather outside, you can easily add layers under it.
  • The question of size becomes less important, because skirts fit more easily than pants.
  • Many women’s travel skirts are made of sunblocking materials of SPF 50 or more and will protect you from a burn. It’s important to note that only the best women’s travel skirts have this feature, so look out for SPF in the product description.
  • Skirts are often culturally appropriate for women traveling in conservative countries, especially the longer models (best not above the knees or too tight if you’re in a country where modesty is valued).
  • Skirts are flexible. If you choose the right skirt, you can wear it for casual travel during the day and to go out at night. A quick shake, hang it up for a bit and put it back it on.
  • They take up less space in your luggage than trousers do. You can usually roll them up or bunch them into a small ball when they’re wrinkle-resistant, especially with a more lightweight fabric.
  • Skirts are usually easier to care for than pants. Quick-dry skirts are made with modern fabrics that don’t stay wet long, don’t wrinkle, and wear forever without losing their shape.
  • Some skirts are reversible and can be adapted to become shorts or pants with a few snaps or clips.
  • Travel dresses and skirts can be the perfect travel clothes for conservative countries where women’s pants aren’t common. But if you’re looking for the best travel skirt for Europe, then a midi travel skirt will do just fine, since it can double as city wear.

Have I convinced you yet?

I traveled the length of Africa for a year wearing a skirt most days and was comfortable all the way. A skirt allows you to dress up by adding travel accessories to your outfit, or dress it down when you need to.

We all have our favorites. Mine was a wonderful model by Tilley Endurables. I could crush it or snag it but somehow it always looked fresh. It also dried quickly.

Of course, they don’t make it anymore (isn’t that always the case when something is great?). The only good news is that I’ve kept it over the years so even if it’s not made anymore, I still have mine.

How to choose the best travel skirt for your trip

You can find travel skirts in almost any style but there are a few characteristics you should look for.

  • Lightweight . Lightweight skirts for travel are essential. If you’re traveling light, weight is of the essence. A big bulky skirt will weigh you down and take up valuable space in your ever-shrinking luggage. A great skirt for travel should be easy to pack.
  • Resistant to wrinkles . Ironing during a trip is not how you want to spend your time. I like cotton skirts for travel and love linen, but linen wrinkles far too easily to pack – at least for me. If it’s high summer I’ll make an exception, especially if I have evening events to attend.
  • Quick-drying . If you’re traveling constantly you’ll need something that dries quickly. When I was on the road as a foreign correspondent I sometimes changed locations every night and one thing I couldn’t afford was a wet item of clothing.
  • Flattering .  No, your skirt doesn’t have to be gorgeous but it should at least be flattering – otherwise, you won’t wear it and it’ll just sit at the bottom of your luggage
  • Neutral in color . Depending on the kind of trip you’re taking, the color will matter. If you’re mostly in the city, a black skirt can double as evening wear. If you’re in the countryside or somewhere dusty, black is the last color you’ll want. Better opt for gray, khaki, or beige instead. Black and white show dirt the most.
  • Of appropriate length . Your height matters but so does the length of your skirt. In conservative countries, a longer skirt might be more appropriate. But the issue of comfort is also important and you need a length that is natural to you: for some women, that’s shorter than for others.
  • Practical . That’s right – travel skirts with hidden pockets.! Or not so hidden… I can’t live without them. A pocket with velcro is a bonus!
  • A comfortable waist . I prefer an elastic waistband because hours of travel can make your waistline chafe. If not elastic, at least comfortable.
  • Well-sewn . I have sensitive skin and a bumpy seam or sharp zipper can bother me. I need the kind of comfort you can only get from something well-sewn, and sometimes that means I have to pay the price.
  • Versatile . If you’re traveling light, you’ll want to carry fewer items so a skirt that is reversible or adaptable to both day and evening wear is like gold.
  • Not too expensive . If you’re a normal person who can wear clothes that don’t rub and chafe, then you’ll find many travelers head to the nearest Walmart or similar discount store to get a cheap skirt they can easily replace when it wears out. Whenever I’ve done that I’ve wasted my money. Try handing your cheap skirt to a laundrywoman with powerful arms and it could fall apart on the first wash. I prefer something…
  • Sturdy and long-lasting . A tough skirt won’t let you down. You can wash it, wrinkle it, stain it, scrunch it and try to destroy it but it will continue to serve you faithfully.

Travel skirts are becoming increasingly popular items in women’s travel clothing items. Even if you’re not accustomed to wearing skirts, they make perfect sense when you’re on the road so don’t forget to add them to your travel packing list .

And please, before you head out on your trip, be sure to protect yourself and your belongings with travel insurance .

Much as I love to wear skirts for travel, sometimes you just can’t. When you’re hiking in the rainforest, for example, and the ground is rife with creepy crawlies. Or when it’s so hot your thighs chafe (if that’s a problem for you, use Body Glide – it won’t happen again).

Most times though? I wouldn’t leave home without one.

Effortlessly stylish, at every destination.

Rule number one of laying out your travel wardrobe: Only bring the most versatile pieces, like the best travel skirts ahead. Whether you’re wearing them en route or at your destination (or both), travel-ready skirts are adaptable, comfortable, and are ready to be mixed-and-matched with other pieces in your suitcase.

What To Consider When Shopping For Travel Skirts

Travel-friendly features.

Of course, finding a skirt that matches your vacation style is a key consideration (more on that in a bit), but when it comes to travel, minding the practical details will benefit you in the long run. Look for skirts with pockets for keeping essentials at hand (bonus points if it has a zippered pocket for not losing the hotel key). Wrinkle-free skirts will save you the stress of tracking down an iron, too. Generally speaking, the more dense or complex the weave, the more likely the fabric is to resist creasing . Synthetic fabrics like polyester, rayon, nylon, Tencel, or spandex , knits woven with wool, or denim (especially those blended with stretch) are all exceptional options. There are even skirts made of quick-drying materials that are perfect for bringing along on outdoor adventures.

Focus on skirts that make sense for travel day and your planned activities on the ground. In tropical locales, lightweight wrap skirts are perfect for beachside cocktails when paired with heeled sandals, but can double as swimsuit cover-ups if needed. If you’re on an active trip, bring along a tennis skirt or other athletic skirt with features like adjustable hemlines and pockets — it’ll look just as appropriate off the trail or court when paired with a cute cropped cardigan . Or maybe you want a skirt you can wear on the plane; in that case, try a maxi skirt in a stretchy knit that’ll cover your legs against the chill, and allow for plenty of movement. When in doubt, opt for simplicity; a basic slip skirt in a neutral color is guaranteed to go with everything, and can work either day or night.

  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. I think this pattern could suit an advanced or adventurous beginner. The style of the skirt is simple but working with heavy-weight fabric can sometimes be difficult and it usually requires more precision when it comes to fitting an invisible zipper. Some previous garment sewing experience would help with this.

A stable fabric can be used to make the cutting and sewing process simpler. The stretch version of the skirt is a simple style with an easy-to-fit elasticated waistband, a good way to practice sewing with knits.

  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes. Instructions are included in a separate download.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. I think a complete beginner would struggle with this pattern since the instructions are vague. Technical terms are included within the instructions that a beginner may not yet understand, and some parts of the process are open to interpretation. I think some previous garment sewing experience would definitely be helpful in sewing this pattern.

“Mellow Yellow” Pleated Knee-Length Skirt

A model showcases a vibrant yellow knee-length skirt adorned with large box pleats. With a closer look at the details of the skirt.

  • Sizes: UK 8 – 20. The exact measurements aren’t given.
  • Design: Knee-length skirt. Large box pleats. Waistband. Zipper closure at back.

  • Instructions: No instructions are included with the pattern. A copy of Love Sewing Magazine issue 73 must be purchased for full instructions.

Vintage Style Pleated Midi Skirt

  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes, A0 copyshop size. Instructions are available as a separate download.
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. I think an advanced beginner with some previous garment sewing experience could have a go at this pattern. A complete beginner might struggle with the accuracy of sewing the pleats.

Simple Full Circle Skirt

A model showcases a dark red, faux leather, midi-length full-circle skirt, also providing an up-close view to highlight its details.

Download now from Gathered – FREE

  • Sizes: Instructions are given for how to draft your own pattern based on your body measurements.
  • Design: Midi length full circle skirt. Wide waistband. Back zipper closure.
  • Fabric: Faux leather is suggested. Other medium-weight woven fabrics could be used, for example, quilting cotton, linen, needlecord, velvet. Lightweight fabrics such as viscose, crepe, or rayon could also be used for a drapier look and feel.
  • Note: Depending on the type of fabric you use, topstitching the seams in step 4 of the instructions may not be necessary.
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. I think an advanced beginner with some previous garment sewing experience could have a go at this pattern. Once the pattern is drafted, the skirt is fairly simple in construction. Sewing with faux leather can be tricky and cumbersome so if you’re not feeling confident, opt for an easier fabric such as a cotton or a cotton blend.

“Willow” A-line Mini Skirt

  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight knit fabrics with some structure like Ponte or French terry.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. Although instructions are included with the pattern, they are vague with no illustrations or photographs included. I think a beginner sewing with knits for the first time would struggle with how to sew and finish the fabric without stretching the knit fabric out.

“Suzy” Slim Fit Midi Skirt with Buttoned Front

A model in a dark blue fitted midi length pencil skirt with buttoned front and front slanted pockets, also in a zoom for a closer look of the skirt.

  • Design: Midi-length fitted pencil skirt. Waistband. Button closure on the front. Front slanted pockets.
  • Fabric:   Medium to heavy-weight woven fabrics with some structure like denim, linen, needlecord, corduroy, or cotton twill.

“M8149” Faux Leather Pencil Skirt with Mock Fly

Three high-waisted pencil skirts with mock fly and button closure. Skirt A, a red mini skirt with an exposed zipper on the front. Skirt B, a black knee-length version. Skirt C, a red faux leather midi-length version worn by a model. Also featuring their sewing pattern line drawings.

  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes. Paper pattern also available here . Instructions are included with both versions.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. There are a lot of technical details involved in this skirt such as the mock fly and creating the back yoke and panels. I think this pattern would suit an intermediate to advanced sewist with some experience sewing with heavyweight fabrics and denim.

A-line skirts:

“ginger” high-waisted a-line skirt with shaped waistband.

Three high-waisted A-line skirts. Skirt A is a light blue with a shaped waistband. Skirt B is a dark colored version. Skirt C is a simple waistband version. Also featuring their sewing pattern line drawings.

  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. This skirt is simple in style and can be adapted for an easier or more challenging sew. Some experience sewing zippers could be helpful but this would make a great pattern for a beginner wanting to practice and advance their dressmaking skills.

Circle skirts:

Full circle skirt with different zipper closures.

A model in a cream-colored skirt with blue tropical prints, showcasing the swishy full-circle knee-length design. Also features the sewing pattern line drawings of the garment.

Buy now from Sew Over It – £11.50 (approx. $13)

  • Design: Swishy full-circle skirt. Knee length. Waistband. Options for centered, invisible, or lapped zipper insertions.
  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight woven fabrics with some drape like cotton lawn, chambray, needlecord, light denim, or wool. Viscose, rayon, or crepe can be used for a more floaty skirt.
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. I think this would be a good pattern for a confident beginner with some sewing experience. The skirt is a simple design and would be a great way to practice sewing different types of zipper fastenings. Circle skirts can sometimes be difficult to hem so some sewing experience would be helpful.

Tiered skirts:

“m8150” flared tiered skirt with length options.

Three floaty, tiered skirts - Midi length with hem ruffle, red maxi, and dark patterned maxi - showcased by a model. Includes sewing pattern line drawings.

  • Sizes: US 6 – 24. Hip: 32.5” – 48” (83 – 122 cm).
  • Design: Floaty, tiered skirt. Two length options: midi or maxi. Optional hem ruffle detail. Elasticated waistband.
  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight woven fabrics with some drape, like cotton lawn, cotton voile, taffeta, viscose, rayon, or crepe.
  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes. A paper version is also available here . Instructions are included with all options.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. I think this pattern would better suit an intermediate to advanced sewist. Although the skirt has a simple, elasticated style, gathering all of the tiers and attaching them accurately would be very tricky for a beginner without previous garment sewing experience.

“Mave” Gently Ruffled Tiered Maxi Skirt

Three models in tiered skirts with drawstrings and pockets - red-orange above knee, yellow-orange maxi, and brown maxi.

Buy now from True Bias in standard and plus sizing – $16-20

  • US 0-18. Hip: 34” – 46.5” (86 – 118 cm).
  • US 14 – 30. Hip: 43.5” – 59.5” (110 – 151 cm).
  • Design: Elastic waist tiered skirt with a drawstring, pockets, and the option to include a lining. The ruffles are optional.
  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight fabrics with drape, such as challis, crepe, satin, georgette, or chiffon.
  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes, A0 copyshop size. Instructions are included. A paper version is also available at an additional cost.
  • Instructions: Instructions are included with the pattern. There’s also a multi-part sew-along on the True Bias blog.
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. This is a good pattern for practicing gathering, and the elasticated waist makes it easy to sew and easy to fit.

Pleated skirts:

“lizzie” pleated knee-length skirt.

Two models in knee-length pleated skirts with pockets - turquoise with floral print and plain brown.

  • Design: Pleated knee-length skirt. Waistband. Concealed zipper closure. In seam pockets. Fully lined.
  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight woven fabrics with some crispness to hold the pleats. For example, cotton twill, cotton lawn, chambray, denim, and linen.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. I think this pattern would better suit an intermediate to advanced sewist. The pleating detail in this skirt will require accuracy and precision, and attaching the lining could be tricky to sew around the concealed zipper. Some previous garment sewing experience would definitely be an advantage for making this skirt.

Tulle skirts:

“s8328” tulle skirt with length and style options.

Four models showcasing floaty tulle skirts in various styles and lengths. Models A, C, and D wear maxi length versions with style variations, while Model B wears an above-the-knee length version.

  • Sizes: US 4 – 20. Hip: 31.5” – 44” (80 – 112 cm).
  • Design: Floaty tulle skirt. Waistband. Concealed zipper. Options for mini or maxi length. Matching top patterns are included for full occasion outfits.
  • Fabric: Lightweight tulle or netting. You can also use other light to medium-weight fabrics with structure and drape, such as taffeta, crepe, satin, jacquard, dupioni, or lace.
  • Format: Paper pattern. An instruction booklet is available with the pattern.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. I think this pattern would better suit an intermediate to advanced sewist. Tulle and netting can be very tricky to work with and inserting an invisible zipper into the skirt would be challenging for a beginner.

“Loulouxe” Sporty Short Skort

Two models in sporty skorts. Model A in a black version with white polka dots, and Model B in a unique design with an optional pocket, along with sewing pattern line drawings.

Buy now from Jalie – $12-16

  • Children: Ages 2 – 13. Hip: 22” – 34.5” (56 – 87 cm).
  • Women: US 4-22. Hip: 36” – 53” (91 – 135 cm).
  • Design: Sporty skirt with attached shorts. Low-cut waistband. Back flounce. Panel detail. Shorts with lined inseam. Optional pockets. Enclosed seams.
  • Fabric: Light to medium-weight knit fabrics with 60% stretch. For example, French terry, scuba, sport knits, or cotton/viscose/bamboo jersey.
  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes, A0 copyshop size. A paper pattern or a PDF + paper pattern bundle are available at an additional cost. Instructions are included.
  • Suitable for beginners? No. I think this pattern would better suit an intermediate to advanced sewist. The skort is a quite involved project as there are both shorts and skirt panels to sew. Sewing the enclosed seams could be difficult for a beginner using a stretch fabric. I think this pattern would better suit someone with previous experience sewing with stretch fabrics.

Bias Cut Skirts

“evie” bias cut mid-calf skirt.

Two drapey bias-cut flared skirts. Skirt A is a cream colored version with elastic waist and Skirt B is a red version. Also features both of their sewing pattern line drawings.

Buy now from Tessuti AUD $15-25 (approx. $10-16)

  • Sizes: AU 6 – 18. Hip: 36” – 48” (91 – 121 cm).
  • Design: Bias-cut flared skirt with the option to add a bound waist with a zipper, or an elastic waist. A variety of hem options are included for different fabric types.
  • Fabric: Drapey woven fabrics of all weights, such as satin, crepe, viscose, wool, and linen.
  • Format: Digital PDF download in print-at-home digital A4 and US letter sizes, A0 copyshop size. A limited run of paper patterns are also available at an additional cost. Instructions are included.
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes. This pattern is suitable for advanced beginners. The elastic-waist option would be a perfect first project for bias cut patterns, while the zip waist option is a great way to level up your sewing. Bias-cut fabric can be tricky to cut and to sew, so some prior experience would be very helpful.

Quick Q&A’s:

What is the easiest type of skirt to make .

The easiest type of skirt to make is a gathered skirt with an elastic waist. You can make this style of skirt without a pattern simply by measuring your waistline and cutting a rectangle of fabric 2 –2.5 times in width and in your length of choice.

For more fitted styles, a simple A-line skirt finished with a facing and a back zipper is a quick and easy style to sew, although it requires a little more experience than a gathere skirt owing to the facings and zippers involved.

How much fabric for a skirt?

The amount of fabric you’ll need depends on the length and volume of the style you choose. While a fitted mini skirt can be made from 1-1.5 yards of fabric; a tiered, gathered, maxi skirt can use up to 3 yards of fabric.

Everlane Just Dropped a New Travel-ready Collection, and These Are the 7 Pieces I’m Packing for My Next Trip

Shop the perfect flowy dresses, lightweight tops, and breathable bottoms for summer travel.

travel pattern skirt

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

As a travel writer who also happens to be enamored with fashion, I was on the edge of my seat when I recently learned that Everlane was dropping a vacation-themed collection just in time for summer. I’ve been shopping for basics from the brand for years now since I made it a priority to stock my closet with sustainably-made items, so when it offered me the chance to try some of the pieces ahead of the launch, I could hardly resist.

The most difficult part of packing, for me, is envisioning a range of versatile outfits with a reasonable number of pieces, and as an overpacker I especially struggle in the summer when the weather fluctuates so much. However, the Destination Vacation collection has officially put an end to my days of attempting to tie my wardrobe together without packing up my entire closet in the process. From dreamy dresses to the most shockingly comfortable knit shorts, this launch is tailor-made for travel so you can build your dream vacation wardrobe with just a few key staples.

The Gauze Off-the-Shoulder Dress

The idea of a capsule wardrobe is that it contains a variety of pieces that have been thoughtfully selected for their versatility, which is exactly what this collection does. Offering an array of eco-friendly tops, bottoms, dresses, and even shoes, each piece can be mixed and matched to be worn in countless ways, effectively cutting down on what you actually need to pack in your suitcase while still providing ample outfit options.

I selected two dresses — the Gauze Off-the-Shoulder Dress and the Gauze Tiered Dress — which have already become mainstays in my wardrobe since they can be styled with anything from Adidas Sambas to a pair of tasteful sandals for a day at the office, an evening happy hour, or even a nice dinner out while traveling. Made from breezy 100 percent organic cotton material, these dresses are the perfect selections for days when the temperature skyrockets, and they each come in four simple colors and patterns that will slot right into your existing wardrobe.

The Crochet Tank

Lightweight, airy fabrics are a through-line of this collection, and the Crochet Tank and Shorts combo are powerhouse selections for travel days and sightseeing tours as they can be worn together or styled separately, multiplying the possibilities of your wardrobe. I’ve been loving the striped pattern that has proven to transcend the decades as a timeless style, and from dinner to a Broadway show, the top left me perfectly dressed for every activity on my agenda, all while remaining unencumbered by too-tight material.

The Crochet Short

And seeing as comfortable shorts that don’t ride up are notoriously hard to come by, I’d be remiss not to mention that the Crochet Shorts are already getting plenty of wear in my daily rotation, with the elastic waistband and loose fit as highlights. If you’re just as tired as I am of turning to denim as your go-to summer material, the open eyelet stitching of these organic cotton shorts will be a welcome change. Plus, thanks to the wearable black and white striped pattern, you can easily pair these shorts with the matching top or any other pop of color you fancy depending on what the day calls for.

However, any good capsule wardrobe should also contain at least one reliable pair of pants regardless of the season, and the Cropped Mariner Jeans stand out as a carefree pick that will surely be the backbone of your closet on cooler spring and summer travel days. A frayed hem instantly sets these jeans apart from traditional denim, while a wide leg cut promises to never feel restrictive while walking around your vacation spot. Wear them out to dinner paired with the Crochet Tank or go for a monochromatic look with the Supima Puff-Sleeve Top , but let’s just say that if you were stranded on an island with one pair of jeans to choose from, these should be your pick.

The Cropped Mariner Jean

All products featured on Vogue are independently selected by our editors. However, we may earn affiliate revenue on this article and commission when you buy something.

Thanks to a certain crop of designers, from Chemena Kamali at Chloé to Sabato De Sarno at Gucci, boho fashion is back and better than ever. With prized pieces including billowing blouses and flared trousers to strappy gladiator sandals and patchwork denim , one It item stands out among them all: the crochet skirt . Perfectly capturing summer’s easygoing vibe, crochet-skirt outfits are fit for any warm-weather occasion, whether you’re darting off to the seaside or sticking to the city streets. In fact, crochet in the city is our preferred method to test out the trend, complete with any day-to-night top, simple sandal, or festive raffia tote. Below, find out why we’re making the case for everyday crochet this summer. The best part? No swimsuit required.

Vogue ’s Favorite Crochet Skirts:

  • The Everyday Essential: & Other Stories crochet midiskirt , $149
  • The Sequined Style: Calle Del Mar crochet embellished skirt , $1,650
  • The Blue-and-White-Striped Skirt: ESCVDO Safi scalloped crocheted midiskirt , $650

  • The Crochet-Trim Skirt: Dôen Sebastiane crochet-trimmed midiskirt , $228

On the high street, helping usher in the boho revival is none other than & Other Stories’ minimalist crochet midiskirt. It looks effortlessly chic when styled with St. Agni’s open-back blouse, Mango’s off-duty rope sandals, and a roomy basket bag from Dragon Diffusion. Similarly elegant is Dôen’s crochet-trim poplin pick, which ever-so-slightly dips its toe into the 1970s-inspired trend. It reaches its full potential, however, when paired with Suzie Kondi’s cherry red crochet tank, Reformation’s fisherman sandals , and Mango’s mesh shopping bag. Meanwhile, Anna Kosturova’s 3D-floral miniskirt makes for poolside perfection. Throw in Gimaguas’s striped button-up, Sara Christina’s crochet bikini, and Loewe’s raffia tote , and you’re dressed to impress.

As for those warm summer nights? Up their ante with a crochet skirt or two, like sequin-adorned styles from Zara and Calle Del Mar or Zimmermann’s wavy, tiered take. They embody that lush summer feeling without going full-on tropical. And finally no crochet-skirt roundup could be complete without mention of Diotima, of course. Style its crystal-embellished midi with Nensi Dojaka’s mesh T-shirt, a pair of thong sandals from Mango, and COS’s woven tote. And for those still wondering what to wear underneath, if not a bikini: Might we suggest a full brief or boy short?

Summer is officially calling—and these 10 crochet-skirt outfits are the answer.

'Maldives issue with India helping us': Sri Lanka tourism minister on boost in Indian travellers amidst Maldives boycott calls

S ri Lanka's Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, has pointed out the positive impact of calls for Indian travellers to boycott the Maldives on Sri Lanka's travel industry. Fernando expressed that the ongoing situation in the Maldives has inadvertently benefited Sri Lanka's tourism sector, speaking to CNBC on Thursday.

Referencing a social media dispute in January that led to a significant decline in Indian visitors to the Maldives this year, Fernando stated, "The Maldives issue is... helping us."

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Tourism highlighted that shift in travel patterns is evident, with India, once the largest source market for the Maldives in 2023, now ranking sixth behind countries such as China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.

Highlighting the strong ties between Sri Lanka and India, both in business and tourism, Fernando emphasised the value proposition Sri Lanka offers Indian travellers. He pointed out the diverse attractions in Sri Lanka, including its beaches, casinos, shopping opportunities, and the Ramayana Trail, a series of sites linked to the ancient Hindu epic, Ramayana.

Fernando also acknowledged India's growing influence in Sri Lankan travel sector, predicting that Indian travellers are poised to become the world's fourth-largest spenders by 2030. This trend is seen as a significant boost for Sri Lanka's tourism industry, with Fernando noting the positive impact of India's economic growth on the island nation.

Looking ahead, Fernando expressed optimism about attracting more global investments to Sri Lanka, drawing parallels to the Maldives' renowned water bungalow concept. Plans are underway to introduce adventure activities to cater to younger travellers and initiatives to position Sri Lanka as an entertainment hub by hosting musical events to attract tourists.

All the looks Meghan Markle wore on her trip to Nigeria, ranked

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Nigeria over the weekend.
  • Meghan wore a variety of ensembles throughout the trip.
  • Her best looks from the tour were colorful dresses.

Insider Today

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just wrapped up a trip to Nigeria.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent several days in the country, which is interested in hosting the Invictus Games, according to CBS News . The Invictus Games celebrated 10 years since its founding on Wednesday.

Meghan wore an assortment of quietly luxurious outfits during the tour, many of them brightly colored.

Take a look at the looks Meghan wore in Nigeria, ranked from least to most stylish.

Meghan's white dress for a Nigeria Unconquered reception had a simple silhouette.

Meghan attended the reception in a St. Agni column dress , available for preorder at $409.

The dress featured a strapless neckline, and it subtly hugged her figure before flowing to the floor.

She also accessorized the look with a cross pendant that originally belonged to Princess Diana, as People reported .

The Duchess of Sussex popped in yellow for a visit to the State Governor House in Lagos.

Meghan rewore the Carolina Herrera dress she donned in the photo she and Prince Harry used to announce her pregnancy with Lilibet in 2021.

The sleeveless column dress featured a high neckline, and it draped loosely around the duchess.

Meghan's dress for a charity polo match featured a subtle, sparkly pattern.

Johanna Oritz's Summer Counts Dress , a $1,995 piece that's now sold out, had a hint of glamour thanks to the coordinating scarf that could be added to its halter neckline. Meghan wore it draped over her shoulders.

The floor-length dress was covered in a floral pattern and featured a plunging neckline and ruching at the waist.

Meghan added oversized Heidi Merrick sunglasses to the look.

She opted for a tailored pantsuit to visit the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

Altuzarra designed Meghan's white suit, which featured a blazer with a single button and wide-legged pants.

She paired the suit with a white top, gold pumps, and gold jewelry, as well as a floral corsage.

The peach dress Meghan wore to visit Lightway Academy stood out with architectural detailing.

Heidi Merrick has become a go-to designer for Meghan, so it's no surprise she chose the brand's blush Windsor Gown for the Nigeria tour.

The maxi dress has a high neckline and cinches at both the waist and thigh, creating a casual take on a dropped waist. The back features cutouts on the sides and in the center of the dress, giving it a modern edge.

The sold-out dress retails for $1,350 and has a similar feel to other quiet luxury looks Meghan has worn recently.

She attended a basketball game in Lagos wearing a traditional Nigerian skirt.

travel pattern skirt

Meghan's Nigerian skirt was the star of her outfit, with a blue striped pattern and a tie fastened at her waist. The skirt was gifted to her during her trip, according to People .

She paired the skirt with a Carolina Herrera blouse with the sleeves folded up, gold Burberry pumps, and Heidi Merrick sunglasses.

The look was both casual and sophisticated.

Meghan's dress for a volleyball match had a subtle cutout and a daring slit.

travel pattern skirt

The Duchess of Sussex arrived at the match in a $2,850 Johanna Oritz dress.

A dark-green leafy pattern covered the dress, which had a sweetheart neckline and hit Meghan at the ankle. A diamond-shaped cutout sat in the center of the bodice, framed by textured spaghetti straps.

A thigh-high slit completed the beachy feel of the dress, which Meghan wore with Heidi Merrick sunglasses and black Emme Parsons sandals.

Ruffles on the hem of Meghan's red dress for a Women in Leadership panel made it stand out.

travel pattern skirt

Meghan's $275 midi dress was made by Orire, a Nigerian designer.

The red garment's scooped neckline featured spaghetti straps and a slightly cinched waist.

The hem of the dress was lined with large ruffles, adding a touch of glamour to the simple silhouette. Nude heels from Aquazzura completed the look.

According to InStyle , Meghan said during the panel that she donned the colorful dress at the encouragement of people she met in Nigeria.

"I am just flattered and honored and inspired," she said. "It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived, and I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color so I can fit in with all of you in your incredible fashion!"

Will Congestion Pricing Change How You Drive? Tell Us About It.

We want to know if you will avoid the new tolls by altering your travel patterns in New York City.

A multilane street filled with vehicles.

New York City is preparing to launch the first comprehensive congestion-pricing program in a major U.S. city.

I’ve written about transit for The New York Times for three years, including about how the city has reached this point in its congestion pricing plan.

If you drive inside the congestion pricing zone, I’d like to hear from you to help with my reporting for an article on how the zone will affect traffic in Lower Manhattan. Will you use transit instead of driving into the zone? Will you drive a different route? Will you park somewhere outside the zone?

I will read every response and reach back out to you if I’m interested in hearing more about your situation. I will not publish any part of your response to this questionnaire without following up with you first and hearing back from you. And I’ll only use your contact information to reach out to you and won’t share it outside the Times newsroom.

Who is Considered a Pedestrian in Iowa?

Current law in Iowa defines a pedestrian as a person specifically on foot and does not include people in wheelchairs, riding scooters/skateboarding, or cyclists. Lobbyists and advocacy groups like, AARP Iowa, and the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center pushed to make the language of the law more inclusive. Late last week Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new law that changes the meaning of a pedestrian. The new definition adds some language and now includes “ a person using a pedestrian conveyance”   in addition to a pedestrian on   foot. A pedestrian conveyance is any human-powered device a pedestrian may use to move or move another person. It also includes electric motored devices as long as they produce less than 750 watts. The bill goes into effect on July 1st.  Check out the full article from CBS .

Driving in a Tornado – How to Stay Safe

Never try to outrun a tornado. According to AccuWeather, tornados can travel very quickly and do not follow road patterns. If you are driving and a tornado develops it is best to try to find shelter in a sturdy building. When there is no shelter nearby, experts recommend staying in your car, secured using your seat belt, putting your head down below the window, and covering your head with your hands or a blanket if you have one. If you can safely get to a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine, basically lower than the roadway, then exit the car and lie down in the area and cover your head with your hands or use a protective covering like a blanket or tarp. Also avoid taking shelter under an overpass. The winds are higher in these openings and flying debris can still get to you. Check out the full article on tornado safety .

Real ID – New Deadline to be Enforced

There is a new deadline for Real ID, it is now May 7, 2025. Just a little less than a year away. If you fly commercially or need access to federal facilities you will need a REAL ID or another federally approved ID like a passport. Take a look at the Iowa DOT’s info page . Please note, it can take up to 30 days to receive your REAL ID in the mail so plan ahead.
