For anyone who has watched Ready Player One, Roblox feels like the closest thing to a 0.01 version of that multi-layered, user generated video game platform. Roblox’s CEO on getting to 1 billion users

Roblox CEO David Baszucki has a goal that even he admits is “a little audacious”: to grow the company’s share of the global gaming market’s revenue to 10 percent in the coming few years. 

For comparison, the company’s investor guidance of $4.2 billion in bookings this year is about 2 percent of the global gaming market, which Roblox estimates to currently be between $160 billion and $180 billion. Baszucki shared this goal, which ladders up to his ultimate mission of reaching 1 billion users, during the company’s annual developer conference on Friday.

The scale of Roblox is already staggering relative to external perception of the platform still primarily being for just kids gaming. There are now 25 experiences with over a million daily actives, and as Matthew Ball recently highlighted , “it’s likely Roblox has more monthly users than the entire AAA gaming ecosystem combined.”

The Roblox Developers Conference is underway, and at the keynote address CEO and co-founder David Baszucki unveiled a modest goal: one billion daily active users, and 10% of all gaming content revenue worldwide happening within Roblox. To give that first target some context, estimates vary but the United Nations reckons the global population was just over eight billion people as of November 2022.

All you can really say is good luck because, while Roblox's numbers are as impressive as they get, the platform as it stands is nowhere close to this scale. It boasts 79.5 million daily active users, nothing to be sniffed at for sure, but getting from here to one billion seems Quixotic at best. The first thing Baszucki wants to take aim at, however, is the idea that all these users are young children.

"Of the 79.5 million users who come to Roblox daily, 58% are aged 13 or older," says Baszucki, though perhaps a more telling stat would've been the percentage over 18. "When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were motivated by a question that still drives the company today: How do humans connect through play?"

Baszucki goes on to talk about how Roblox connects people, before getting to the industry's scale and that headline claim. "The gaming market is huge: 3.4 billion people play games, and the gaming industry generates more than $180 billion in annual revenue," says Baszucki. "As our next stepping stone on our way to one billion daily active users, we are sharing an ambitious goal: We believe that 10% of all gaming content revenue worldwide will flow through the Roblox ecosystem and be distributed within our Roblox community.

"On our way to 10% of gaming content revenue, we believe we will reach approximately 300 million daily active users. We believe that about 80% of those people will come to Roblox to play together, with the rest coming to shop, consume entertainment, learn, or simply communicate with one another." 

Ookay. I'm not quite sure why Baszucki floats the one billion goal then dials it down to 300 million daily users afterwards: which is still one hell of a goal. Maybe it's just a case of long-term aspirations versus medium term reality, but one billion people is such a crazy number I'm surprised Baszucki didn't give a little more insight into why Roblox thinks that might be achievable (if indeed it does, and this isn't just about getting investors rubbing their trousers).

Roblox announced some new tools at RDC that it believes will help it turbo-boost those user numbers. First is Party, which lets Roblox friends group up, communicate, and move around experiences (the platform's designation for the games it hosts), with voice chat limited to those 13 years and older. Party will also automatically ensure friends matchmake onto the same server, and will be fully rolled out by the end of the year.

Another major push is music, with a "What's Playing" feature allowing users across the platform to find popular and trending songs and any associated experiences. Roblox has also had an idea for something it calls "Music Charts", launching in 2025, which does make me slightly miss Top of the Pops. 

Further to this there's a partnership with DistroKid, a music distribution service, which will make it easier for artists to officially upload their music to Roblox, and for creators to use the tracks. Baszucki says this is all "part of our vision" that Roblox becomes "a destination for organic and immersive music discovery." Now I'm missing MTV.

It's easy enough for non-players to scoff at Roblox, but these announcements are going to make a major difference to creators, players, and presumably music artists who want their tunes exposed to a potentially massive audience. Roblox isn't even reinventing the wheel in how it's going to do it: charts, community, and whatever the successor to the music video is. 

There are also various changes coming to what types of businesses creators can run on Roblox, and how they can price premium experiences worldwide. Eligible creators will now be able to sell merchandise from within experiences, with the feature launching in early 2025 and the first commercial partner being Shopify. Further to this, creators will be able to price access to their experiences in "real currency value" (revenue share: 50-70% depending on price point), and a price optimisation tool that helps creators judge the sweet spot. Yep: these kids are going to get squeezed until the pips squeak.

Shortly after this Roblox is launching regional pricing recommendations, and allowing creators to vary prices by region, which is apparently all about building "a virtual economy that is more globally inclusive and accessible."

Roblox now has serious cultural penetration (see for example the BBC explaining the UK's general election to young Brits via Roblox), but this scale has also brought increased scrutiny on both its commercial practices and the platform's safety for young users. For its part, Roblox studio head Stefano Corazza denies the company and its revenue sharing model is a contemporary equivalent of "child labour", countering that "we are offering people anywhere in the world the capability to get a job." This argument doesn't seem to carry much weight with the Turkish government, however, which has just straight-up banned Roblox for alleged "child exploitation."

That remains the wider context around Roblox's future, as its scale and power inexorably grow, and the revenue sharing and safety issues in particular feel like they will run and run. At the very least, it's the kind of thing that might crimp your ability to attract a billion folks daily.

Many of the features announced at RDC will already be somewhat familiar to Roblox users, albeit in more limited forms. Walmart has been selling real-world items on there since early this year, while you can already apply for a job in the Roblox version of IKEA (and serve virtual meatballs). Plenty of artists already use Roblox to promote their music, and hold concerts. The company's previously boasted about the pie-in-the-sky AI that'll create everything for you . All of these features slot into what Roblox is already doing well.

Targeting one billion daily users seems like madness but other than that, for Roblox, it's pretty much business as usual. And business is very, very good.

  • To better understand Roblox’s impact on the U.S. economy, we’re releasing the results of our first economic and social impact report.

While Roblox does not employ creators, between 2017 and 2023, the direct and indirect impact of our Developer Exchange ( DevEx ) Program* was nearly 18,000 full-time job equivalents** across the country.

Of the respondents who monetize on our platform, 38% said they wouldn’t have earned income from making interactive content without Roblox. And 56% said they don’t develop for any other platforms.

We also found many of our U.S. creators are based in regions far from the large, coastal cities typically associated with technology.

Every day, 79.5 million users*** come to Roblox to visit millions of experiences and engage with millions of 3D items made by our community of creators. During the 12 months ended June 30, 2024, we distributed $803 million to our global creator community, up 18% over the previous 12 months. These creators, who build the experiences, avatars, and items available on Roblox, live across the U.S., including many in regions not typically associated with technology.

To enable the creation of anything, anywhere, by anyone, we have invested in a robust suite of tools, available via Roblox Studio , the most accessible 3D development tool in the world. With Studio, any creator can find an audience, publish globally in seconds, and iterate rapidly. Creators come to Roblox for many reasons: Some create on Roblox to learn how to code or make games , some are driven by the fun of creating , and some are interested in monetizing their creations and building a business on Roblox. Knowing this, we wanted to better understand how Roblox has influenced people’s businesses and impacted the economies in areas not traditionally associated with the technology industry.

Our Support of U.S. Creators Also Has an Economic Impact

People of all ages and backgrounds create on Roblox. While some create for the joy of playing with friends, others go on to pursue careers in technology or gaming by monetizing the experiences, 3D models, avatars, outfits, or accessories they create. Our research showed in the U.S., between 2017 and 2023, we generated an estimated GDP of $1.2 billion . In 2023 alone, we generated an estimated GDP of $345 million. While Roblox does not employ creators, the direct and indirect impact of our Developer Exchange program during that 7-year period was 17,840 full-time job equivalents* * and contributed $324 million in tax revenue ***** to the U.S. economy between 2017 and 2023. In the past year alone, more than 7,500 of the 5.5 million U.S. creators monetizing on Roblox made more than $650.

We support creators throughout their journey as they build their businesses with the tools and features available on Roblox. Recently, we launched even more features to help them, including the ability to publish immersive ads , the ability to sell on the Creator Store , in-experience purchases , and an easier way for more creators to create, sell, and resell avatar items .

Our Economic Impact Benefits Communities Across the U.S.

The report shows creators across the U.S., including outside the large, coastal cities typically associated with the technology industry, are taking advantage of the economic opportunities Roblox provides. According to the report, half of the creators bringing in the equivalent of full-time earnings on Roblox in the U.S. from 2017-2023 were in areas nowhere near cities with large, established technology industries.

For example, the developer MrWindy lives in Utah, where he works full-time running Flee the Facility , an adventure game that’s been played more than 4.5 billion times. He’d always loved playing video games, but after discovering Roblox, his passion turned to making games. About a year after he began developing on Roblox, he was able to fully support himself with the earnings from Flee the Facility. What’s more, he found a like-minded community in Roblox. “I enjoy connecting with others who get me and know what I am working towards,” he says.

We Provide a Way to Become a Developer With Little to No Upfront Cost

For millions of people, Roblox represents a low-barrier path to creating 3D experiences, games, and items. We seek to provide creators with everything they need to take their ideas from concept to reality. This goal is at the heart of everything we do, from the developer tools we build to the developer events we host. As a result, there are developers of all experience levels and teams of all sizes — from two-person teams to large developer studios — who are succeeding on Roblox. In fact, our survey found that 38% of the 384 respondents who monetize on our platform would not have made money from developing interactive content without Roblox.

This number is especially exciting to us, since fostering the creator community is core to what we do at Roblox. Based on conversations with many exceptional creators, we found they started out playing on Roblox, began building for fun, learned to code and build worlds on the platform, then built successful careers on Roblox and in the broader STEM field. That was made possible because of our foundation as an advanced development environment built on real-world physics. And with emerging technology like AI powering tools like Assistant , learning becomes accessible to a wider range of curious creators.

For example, Nevada’s alertcoderf had never been interested in math. But as he watched other Roblox creators in his early days on the platform, his eyes were opened to how integral math was to thinking like a programmer — a dream of his since his early days on Roblox. “Seeing what other people [were] making led me to want to figure out how I [could] learn from them,” he says. “You start asking questions and developing connections to participate in the cool things people are doing and making.” He then progressed quickly from building his first game to being the head of Twin Atlas , which runs popular experiences like Creatures of Sonaria and Dragon Adventures and has become one of the largest Roblox developer studios.

Many professional Roblox creators are solo entrepreneurs, while others, like alertcoderf, are using their earnings to hire employees and build teams. Other studios grow and scale to tens or hundreds of employees, such as alertcoderf and Twin Atlas. We’re proud that we’ve created a market where individuals, small studios, and large studios alike have the potential to operate profitably.

(Bloomberg) -- Roblox Corp. Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Dave Baszucki announced a new goal for 10% of the global video-game content revenue to flow through the company’s popular gaming platform.

At the Roblox developer conference Friday, Baszucki said the company will do this by working with tech giants such as Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. Right now, the gaming market supports $180 billion in content revenue yearly, he said.

Roblox announced a new partnership with Shopify Inc. that will let users sell physical products through digital Roblox experiences. The company also revealed plans for a new program to price paid-access experiences on desktop versions in real currency, not just in Robux, that will give creators a higher share of the resulting revenue.

Roblox, one of the most popular gaming apps ever especially with kids, is accessible across consoles, smartphones, tablets and PCs. Every day, 79 million people log on to play its mix of user-created games. Over the last year, Roblox paid out over $800 million to its community of game developers, Baszucki said.

Last year, the company generated $2.8 billion in sales.

On Friday, Baszucki said he expects that Roblox will succeed at capturing 10% of gaming content revenue when it reaches 300 million daily active users. Baszucki has a long-held ambition for Roblox to reach 1 billion daily active users.

Am guessing how many people join the game or how many people played the game am not really should or based off of how many people are in a server.

just like YouTube, it doesn’t save whoever played the game already, it just accumulate and is only based from the amount of time a client has entered your game.

Which is also the reason why some games easily reach 100M+ Visits, there are some game with abusive lifespans that requires atleast 150 hours to complete it.

I wasn’t very precise about that, but no, only count by entering the game, i’m not sure if errors are included though :

The 100M+ example was a slightly off-topic way of saying that total visits doesn’t really matter as they’re never accurate (most people that love the game has probably joined it over 5 times), if the OP want a more precise number of “unique users”, you can do it either with a “Welcome” badge reward or it’s listed in the Developer stats in the game.

Visits are calculated through the issuance of tickets per visitor with an imposed cooldown. Visitors are capable of sending multiple tickets to the game and new ones are also given when they teleport between places. The visits count is not for unique visitors, you can have players revisiting your place and adding to that count.

I am not sure about the validity of the ticket statement I made, however I am certain that the visit count is not unique visitors, so you can easily have 200 visits but not 200 unique visitors.

I sometimes see a game with 1k+ players. I refresh the page and it only has 200 visits. How is that possible?

Visits are done by every unique player that joins the game, when an player joins and roblox server gets an update and updates the visit count. Here Is an Image of what I am talking about:

Every time someone joins your game, including yourself, the visit counter goes up. There’s no required time for them to stay in the game or anything.

My understanding from years back was that every unique visit every day counts. So if you played every day of the year multiple times a day, you would have given 365 visits.

Roblox , the popular and controversial sandbox game for children, has released its 2022 financial report, posting net losses of close to $1 billion for the entire year. The company says it lost $934 million in 2022, which is a big increase compared to 2021’s $504 million loss.

These losses come in spite of an increase in revenue and bookings year-on-year. Roblox cites $2.2 billion in revenue, which is a plus of 16% compared to 2021, with bookings increasing by 5% to $2.9 billion in the same timeframe (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz ).

Roblox explained the stark increase in losses with higher expenses to fund the expansion of the operation, noting that it would likely continue to post similar results in coming years after a change in how the company calculates how much of its bookings could be recognized as earnings in each quarter: “Regardless, since our investment decisions are generally based on levels of bookings, we expect to continue to report net losses for the foreseeable future even as we anticipate generating net cash from operating activities.”

Roblox will also stop reporting monthly metrics after March 2023, it announced, only making quarterly reports due to monthly numbers being “often more volatile” and driving “more short-term market reactions.”

Investors were not fazed by the net losses Roblox reported, the company’s stock shooting up in value from $36,95 to $44,54 per share after the report’s publication. The value is even slightly higher than that at the time of writing.

Roblox has millions of active daily users on its platform (58.8 million daily active users in Q4 2022, according to the report), partnering with big names like the NFL for cooperation, but has repeatedly faced controversy.

It’s been accused of exploiting child labor to provide the many games available on the platform and has consistent problems with content moderation, letting children between the ages of five and nine years participate in games with sexual contents .

It has also never answered questions regarding copyright issues on its platform when it comes to user-created content ripping off other franchises.
