The Ultimate Boston Packing List.

The Ultimate Boston Packing List

As one of the oldest cities in the U.S., Boston has had a few centuries to develop into the showstopper it is today. If history is your thing, few towns can top it; after all, a little something called the Boston Tea Party took place here, and the Freedom Trail covers some of the "greatest hits" from that founding era. Of course, there’s more to this New England capital than just revolutionary sites. From chic boutique hotels  and seafood of every stripe to swan boat rides in the Common and super-champ sports teams—Boston knows how to bring it. The weather here can be unpredictable, but our month-by-month guide to packing and foolproof outfit ideas will prep you. Grab your suitcase, some Dunkin' Donuts (a mandatory pitstop), and hit the ground running.

THE LUGGAGE

When it comes to packing, it’s all about the right bag for the right job. If you’ve been making do with a beat up old duffle or an ancient carry-on with a sticky wheel, you’ll be amazed at how a new bag makes travel so effortless. Every smart traveler should have three key pieces of luggage: a weekender bag for quickie getaways, a carry-on suitcase for week-long trips, and a larger suitcase for longer stays or travelers that overdo it on souvenirs. (Guilty!) For a weekender, we’re fans of the  Away Everywhere  bag. This little dynamo has separate pockets for your laptop, pens, reading materials, and phone, plus a waterproof umbrella compartment—genius when you visit a rainy destination. For a one-week trip, it’s hard to beat  Away’s Carry-On —it changed the suitcase game with an ejectable battery for phone charging, smooth spinner wheels, and a lifetime warranty. And for any trips lasting two weeks or longer, go for the  Travelpro Platinum Elite . There’s a reason flight crews swear by this luggage brand. This checked bag has gliding spinner wheels, a telescoped handle, and two-inches of zippered expansion. Consider yourself packed.

THE PACKING GEAR

Every packing hurdle is made easier with this trio of travel gear. Got a hotel room or cruise ship cabin with little counter space? This hanging toiletry bag will give you elbow room at the sink plus provide dedicated pockets for all your creams, gels, and sprays. Hang it on the bathroom door or over the towel rack to keep everything upright, protected, and in place. If you have an issue with overpacking — who doesn’t? — then packing cubes are a game-changer. This four-piece set will keep all your things, from underpants to electronics, organized and condensed, saving you precious suitcase space. And rather than depend on the freebie toiletries at the hotel (that harsh hotel soap will zap all the moisture from your skin), bring your own tried-and-true toiletries in these TSA-approved squeeze bottles.

Hanging Toiletry Kit

THE IN-FLIGHT ESSENTIALS

Only travel amateurs get on a flight without bringing the essentials. A sleep mask not only blocks out cabin lights—it provides the privacy you need to get some Zs. The Trtl travel pillow is a travel editors’ favorite for keeping your neck and head comfortable as you nod off. And Comrad compression socks’ moisture-wicking technology keeps feet comfy and protects you from deep vein thrombosis. (Yikes!) Fly like a pro with these packing essentials.

BOSTON OUTFIT INSPIRATION

Like an “I Love New York” shirt in NYC, a Harvard sweatshirt is the telltale sign of a non-Bostonian. Listen, the city is chock-full of coeds, but that doesn’t mean flip-flops and hoodies are the status quo. You never know what the weather holds in New England—a sunny, 60-degree day can turn into a spring snowstorm in no time—so it’s smart to dress in layers. Follow the locals’ lead and pack an array of short- and long-sleeve tees, light sweaters, and a mid-weight jacket so you can keep up with the weather. Ride the T or take a walk downtown and you’ll find that Bostonians are fond of casual—but pulled-together—ensembles. Quality denim, comfortable footwear, and classic outwear will do the trick for women and men.

THE THREE PAIRS OF SHOES YOU’LL NEED FOR EXPLORING BOSTON

Boston is a highly walkable city, but bring the wrong pair of shoes and you’ll be racking up blisters left and right. No matter the season, a cushy, supportive pair of sneakers will suit you well. Since Boston’s seasons are so extreme, the rest of your footwear collection will depend on the dates of your trip. Touching down in spring or summer? Flat (or nearly flat) sandals and boat shoes are the way to go. Heading into fall, ladies would do well with a pair of low- to mid-heeled booties for nights out and men will find rugged boots with serious traction will have them fitting right in with local gents. If you’re one of the brave souls heading into the city in blizzard season, L.L. Bean’s iconic Bean Boots are the only option. They’ll keep your toes warm in negative-15-degree windchill and prevent slips and falls on New England’s treacherous black ice.

WHAT NOT TO PACK FOR BOSTON

Boston is a bustling city with CVS and Walgreens locations on practically every corner. For this reason, you can skip the excess toiletries, first-aid kits, and emergency snacks, and pick them up on the ground if you really need them. The city is also pretty casual in dress, so you can leave your going-out get-ups at home and opt for regular ol’ jeans and cobblestone-friendly footwear.

THE *ONE THING* WTP EDITORS ALWAYS PACK FOR BOSTON

Converse Chuck Taylor® All Star® Core Ox

Boston is a wonderfully pedestrian-friendly place—it’s actually known as “America’s Walking City,” and very much lives up to the moniker. Really, the most important thing you can bring on a trip to Boston is a pair of excellent walking shoes, like this Adidas sneakers for men and women we spotlighted above. And if you want to show some local pride, rock the unisex Chuck Taylors from Boston-based Converse. Whether you’re strolling the lovely green haven that is the Boston Public Garden , walking to key stops (like Federal Reserve and Russia Wharf) along HarborWalk , or going on a self-guided Italian bakery/salumeria/pizza tour of the charming North End neighborhood, these classic kicks are a reliable companion. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that their O.G. color scheme matches the Red Sox team colors. — WTP Editors

BOSTON’S WEATHER AND SEASONS

Boston street in winter, snow falling and a bus in the street.

Boston has four distinct seasons—a blessing or a curse depending on who you ask. Spring is temperate, with a cool sea breeze; summer is warm (if not hot) and balmy, with upwards of 80% humidity; fall is reasonably mild and sets the trees ablaze in fiery shades; and winter, ah winter, unleashes rain, snow, and ice storms that can shut the city down for days at a time. Because Boston’s weather is so erratic—even day to day—it’s key that you check (and recheck) the forecast just before your trip. Weather is often like a light switch here, so if you only pack for breezy spring days, you may be caught off guard when a last-second storm sneaks in. Heed our warning and pack layers or you may be scrambling to buy a new wardrobe when the seven-day forecast takes a sudden detour.

Note: This data comes from our friends at Weather.com. We recommend using this together with a traditional forecast as you get closer to your departure date.

  • Plan for day temps between 22 and 36
  • Expect 3.36 inches of precipitation

What to Wear in Boston in January: Snow is likely and icy temps are all but guaranteed. Don’t leave home without your gloves, warm hat, scarf, and other essentials.

  • Plan for day temps between 25 and 39
  • Expect 3.38 inches of precipitation

What to Wear in Boston in February: Snowstorms and sunny blue skies don’t seem like they’d go in hand, but unexpected weather patterns are February’s bread and butter. This month can be Boston’s snowiest, but it’s also not as bitter as December or January. Pack a mid- to heavy-weight winter parka and all your usual cold weather accoutrements.

  • Plan for day temps between 31 and 45

What to Wear in Boston in March: Layers are the way to go in March. From whipping winds and the last of the year’s snow flurries to balmy, spring-like days, you’ll see it all. Pack a beanie, scarf, and layer-able sweaters, but don’t go packing your Bean Boots until you’ve checked the forecast.

What to Wear in Boston in April: Weather varies greatly in April—especially from the beginning to end of the month—but pack layers and you’ll be fine. What to Wear in Boston in June: Temperatures rise well into the 70s come June, making it a lovely month to visit Boston. Pack typical early summer clothes—AKA breezy dresses, comfortable sandals, cropped jeans, and a light coat.

What to Wear in Boston in October: With temps in the 50s and 60s and splashes of fall foliage across the Common and Public Garden, autumn is a pleasant time to touch down in Boston. Pack a midweight coat, sweaters, leather boots, and other layers that can be added or subtracted.

What to Wear in Boston in November: Fiery foliage and temperate conditions characterize the beginning of November. But, once the second half of the month hits, freezing rain, flurries, and even full-blown Nor’easters are known to occur. Winter apparel is likely the way to go, but check the forecast before you pack your suitcase.

  • Plan for day temps between 28 and 41
  • Expect 3.78 inches of precipitation

What to Wear in Boston in December: New England winters are notorious for a reason. While midday weather may seem extreme, mornings are even more startling as temps can dip into the low teens. Pack all your heavy winter gear and make sure you have waterproof footwear as you’ll be tromping through slush puddles when it snows.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BOSTON

What is the best shopping in boston .

Faneuil Hall may be on everyone’s list, but you can do far better than an American Eagle and Newbury Comics filled with first-time visitors. Instead, opt for Back Bay’s Newbury Street or Beacon Hill’s Charles Street. The first, which runs eight blocks from the Public Garden to Massachusetts Avenue, offers big-name designers, high-end consignment shops, and trendy boutiques tucked into grand Victorian mansions. And the latter, which is right off of the Common, offers antique shops and chic boutiques lined up along gas-lamp-lit streets.

What are the cultural faux pas in Boston?

Without a doubt, the number-one thing you can do to tick off any Bostonian is spout off “ Pahk the car in Hahvahd Yahd ” in a “Good Will Hunting”-esque accent. To avoid further eye rolls, you should also leave the Yankees gear at home, walk single file— not three or four abreast—down crowded sidewalks, and let people get off the T before you try to shove on.

What time do bars/public transportation close in Boston?

Nightlife is a totally a thing in Boston, but the city’s bars and clubs come to a screeching halt much earlier than most would expect. Technically, state law says alcohol service has to end by 2 a.m., but many bars close up shop at 1 a.m. Likewise, the T stops running at 1 a.m. and doesn’t resume service until 5 a.m. If you’re going to be out late, be prepared to call an Uber.

Where can I get the best seafood in Boston? What about the best lobster roll?

Picking the best seafood and lobster roll spots in Boston is like picking the best pizza joint in Chicago—it’s an impossible (and highly scrutinized) job. There are quite a few options, depending on whether you want simple and straightforward or white tablecloth. Either way, it’s worth checking out Atlantic Fish Company , Saltie Girl , Barking Crab , James Hook & Company , The Daily Catch , and—though admittedly touristy— Union Oyster House , the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the U.S.

Should I rent a car in Boston?

Unless you’re planning on day-tripping to other New England cities, you won’t need a car in Boston. Most tourist-frequented spots—like the Boston Common , Faneuil Hall , and Fenway Park —are reachable by foot or the T. Trust us, parking is expensive (on the street and in garages) and traffic is an absolute nightmare, so you’ll save yourself money, time, and stress by forgoing a car.

1. WHAT TO WEAR TO WALK BOSTON’S FREEDOM TRAIL

The iconic 2.5-mile Freedom Trail encompasses some of Boston’s most historic sites, from the 18th-century Old South Meeting House to the 221-foot-tall Bunker Hill Monument . Ensure you don’t have to stop for Band-Aids along the way by opting for comfortable, sport-ready sneakers and a correspondingly casual outfit.

2. WHAT TO WEAR TO TOUR FANEUIL HALL

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is like the Times Square of Boston. Circus performances clog the marketplace’s two main drags, and throngs of people flood in and out of Quincy Market with cupcakes, clam chowder, and Regina’s pizza in hand. The last thing you want to worry about here is getting a heel stuck in the cobblestone lanes or catching your coat on a passing plate of pasta. Instead, women should opt for frayed skinny jeans, leather booties, and a denim jacket that can easily take you from Faneuil Hall to dinner. For men, a relaxed outfit consisting of a terry sweatshirt with a backpack (for new purchases and to-go desserts) should be just fine.

3. WHAT TO WEAR TO A GAME AT FENWAY PARK

Whether you’re sitting atop the Green Monster or just rows behind first base, a cap will do wonders to shade you from the sun. Aside from Yankees gear, there isn’t much we’d advise against wearing here. Jeans, a tee, sneakers, and a backpack (for stowing sunscreen and other essentials) is all you need.

4. WHAT TO WEAR FOR A BREWERY CRAWL AROUND BOSTON

From Baltic porter at Lamplighter and Kimchi Gose at Down the Road Beer Co. to Sam Adams and Harpoon, there are a lot of beers to be tasted in Boston. Prep for the day ahead with a casual jeans-and-tee outfit. Since you’ll be walking around fermenters, glycol chillers, and other brewery equipment, it’s smart to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a warm layer (which will also suit you well on late-night walks back from the bar).

5. WHAT TO WEAR TO STROLL AROUND BEACON HILL (IN SPRING OR SUMMER)

Just down the street from the Charles River Esplanade, Beacon Hill is one of Boston’s most charming neighborhoods. Federal and Victorian-style brick row houses sit shoulder to shoulder with boutique clothing and decor shops, and you’re never far from sweet treats like French pastries and homemade ice cream. If you’re ready to depart from your typical jeans and tee get-up, now is the time. Women, go for a flowy midi dress, a classic denim jacket, and sandals with thick enough soles to handle the bumpy cobblestones of Acorn Street, one of the most photographed streets in the country. Men, this is a good time to break out your button-down—especially if you’ll be grabbing brunch (try The Paramount for huevos rancheros and banana-caramel French toast).

No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . The Samsonite Bartlett Carry-on Softside Spinner earned perfect scores during our tests, impressing us as a solid softside suitcase for under $100. We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Best for Staying Organized

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Lifetime warranty

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment.

People / Jhett Thompson

Most Spacious

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years.

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need.

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. We also like the Compakt Small Garment Bag , which is perfect to transport of one or two formal pieces inside a carry-on suitcase. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair.

Best Budget

Amazon basics.

Amazon's luggage is not just budget-friendly but also lightweight and sturdy with unexpectedly large capacities.

Color options are limited, and the suitcases don't have USB ports or other smart features.

We can confidently tell you there's much more to love about Amazon Basics luggage than a budget-friendly price tag. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner also landed on our list of the best lightweight luggage after earning a perfect score in all categories. We especially love that even though it is a light suitcase, it's sturdy with wheels that easily maneuver over gravel and carpeting. More pockets would have been appreciated, but both the carry-on and checked models easily fit everything on our packing list without the expanders, which adds another 15 percent to the capacity.

The hardside suitcases have extra-thick thermoplastic shells that passed our durability tests with flying colors — no scratches or dents in sight. They were generally easy to maneuver, too, albeit a little more difficult on gravel. Color options are limited, and while most Amazon Basics carriers don't have TSA locks or smart features, the designs exceeded our expectations.

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized.

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models like the Sympatico Domestic Carry-on Expandable Spinner with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without gettings tuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze.

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test even more luggage.

How We Chose These Brands

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.

This Cult-Favorite Luggage Company Just Opened Its Second Boston Storefront In Back Bay

Grab some goodies to get, Away!

Ameera Hammouda

Away , the luggage brand conceived in 2016, just opened its second brick-and-mortar shop in Boston ! With the inaugural shop on Seaport Boulevard in Boston Seaport, the Away family grew to a lovely shop on Newbury Street in Back Bay !

If you’re unfamiliar with the “it” luggage brand, Away, here is the backstory. The founders spent much of their time traveling and were in search of the perfect Carry-On , with features such as a built-in charging bank and a hard-shell case. Unable to find it, they designed it themselves.

The signature suitcase that catapulted Away into the hands of millions was created “by travelers for travelers .” So, each Away product enables you to maximize usage of all the nooks and crannies of your luggage- no more sitting on suitcases.

Not only is Away luggage functional, being named the “#1 carry-on” since its inception in 2016, but the brand merges beauty with function. The ultra chic suitcases, and now expanded array of travel accessories, come in a variety of minimalist silhouettes and sophisticated colors. Boasting industry accolades like Fast Company’s “World’s Most Innovative Companies” and TIME’s “Best Inventions,” Away is the go-to authority for travelers today.

A flat rate starting at $4.5 per day and from $1 per hour allows you to pick an option that will best suit your needs. If you only plan to stay for a few hours in a city, why pay for an entire day, as you would with other luggage storage services? All luggage is covered against damage, loss, and theft.

Half price compared to station lockers and airport lockers

Luggage lockers, also called city lockers, are generally at least double as expensive daily compared to LuggageHero’s luggage storage service.

Until recently, travelers could only stow their bags in these luggage lockers, which offered very little flexibility in regard to pricing, where to go, and luggage deposit. Also, LuggageHero offers stores in countless places so that you always have the option of dropping off your luggage in a safe environment. Unlike luggage lockers in stations and airports, LuggageHero offers both hourly and daily rates. LuggageHero always strives to provide flexible and cheap luggage storage near you.

Immediately after paying $1000 for my items I asked to use the bathroom to wash my hands (they were sticky after touching their demo products) and they told me no, and suggested trying the hotel across the street. I pushed back slightly by questioning the response and they brought me a bleach wipe to clean my hands. Good quality products but this experience at the Seaport store was very off putting. Not like I walked in off the street to use their bathroom, I spent some money.

The workers were fairly nice and answered all of the questions we had. We also came about 10-15 minutes before closing, but they didn't make us feel bad for that. They didn't rush us at all and we were really thankful for that. We came in hopes of getting one of their large bags, but one of the workers tried to tell us we shouldn't do that due to that it will end up being more than 50 pounds when full. We ended up getting a medium and didn't love it. We are lucky they have a 100 day return policy so we returned it for the large we wanted originally.

I came into the store today to look at a carry-on suitcase & the every day bag. I had seen them online but one was out of stock online plus I wanted to see to check them out in person. The salesperson Mateo showed me both items & reviewed all of the features. They had what I wanted, he swiped my card and offered to carry them to my car. This was one of the most pleasant & easiest shopping trips I've had in a while. The store is cute, clean and laid out well. Mateo was nice, patient and helpful. The bags look nice & are a decent price point. I'm looking forward to using them on my next trip.

I needed a carry on but I didn't want to purchase one that would fall apart after a few uses. I went to Away and had a small window of time. The salesperson was not only helpful but efficient, ensuring I was able to get my questions answered and the product that was perfect for me just in time. The entire store's staff was so friendly. I look forward to going back and highly recommend this store and brand.

A great online luggage retailer's first physical location in Boston. If you are looking for a new suitcase, this is the place to go. You will get a stylish piece of luggage with all of the features (and more) common in the most high-end luxury brands - at half the luxury brand price. These suitcases still are not cheap, but if you love to travel, I think it's definitely worth the investment. I've taken mine on multiple trips, and I'm very satisfied with the quality of these suitcases. If I weren't, I wouldn't be going out of my way to write my first Yelp review ever to praise them. Go check this place out!

I've loved my Away suitcase for the last three years that I've had it. I went to this store because the frame of the clothes compression system broke (after traveling with it almost non stop for three years). The two lovely ladies at this store helped me find the replacement part and replaced it with no charge or questions asked. This kind of customer service is hard to find and absolutely made me an Away customer for life. Bravo to Away and to this store in particular.

Photo of Morgan F.

Thanks to Jonah for hooking up my life on my lunch break. Walked in for a bag, walked out with packing cubes and a monogram as well. He did a great job explaining their 100 day no nonsense return policy! Can't wait to use my new super cute bag.

Photo of Sonnet S.

I had a great experience here! Thanks to Cynthia for being super patient with me, including when I changed my mind at the last minute about suitcase colors. By the time I showed up here, I was done with having my luggage break during trips. The kicker was during a trip to Chicago when the luggage I left home with broke. I brought a replacement rollaboard during my trip made by a brand that will remain nameless (but used to show a gorilla jumping up and down on their suitcases in commercials). The damn bag did not withstand even an hour of use. The rubber on its wheels wore away while pulling the bag to the subway. By the time I got to O'Hare, I was nearly carrying my suitcase. I don't like paying premium prices for things but I was already paying over $300 a year for crap suitcases that kept breaking, so I took a chance on Away. I did my research online before going to the store, so I came prepared knowing what I wanted to see and with questions. The salespeople here were helpful in teaching me about the bags' features and answering my questions. Some things to know about Away bags. Their guarantee does not cover cosmetic issues with the bags. So, if one of their bags gets scratched up by luggage handlers, that's not covered. Also, you cannot just stop into one of their locations and get a new bag if one breaks. The bag has to be sent somewhere to be fixed. I can see this being a problem if the bag breaks during a trip. It would be nice if the Away guarantee allowed customers to swap out broken bags at any of Away's retail locations. That said, I will testify that these bags are well made. It has been about six months and my bag is still going strong! The wheels are in good shape. Recommend.

Photo of Sarah O.

I've always hear that away had AMAZING customer service however wasn't the case for us in the seaport location. I came in to exchange a new bag for a different color and had received a $20 discount code from a friend that I asked to be applied. I was rudely told that I couldn't do that because it was an exchange. Totally understandable! I was like ok we can just return and re- buy so we can use the code yes only $20 off but it's helpful to me! Then was told we could only use the referral discount codes online? Ok no big deal we went home and bought online. It really wasn't about the $20 it was more about how rude we were talked to just for asking about a discount code. If the associate nicely explained that she was sorry but it had to be applied online only then we would have honestly just bought it in store without the discount! It wasn't about the $$!! I would still recommend the products just not this location.

If you're looking to spend as little as you can on quality luggage that'll get you from point A to point B without bursting open, this is a great price. Technically not on sale, this set is so well priced, we couldn't help but pass it on.

What kind of luggage should you buy?

For plane travel, one large checked suitcase may be enough for a family of three or four depending on how long you'll be gone. You might even want to add a  carry-on  for each person if your airline lets you have a free carry-on bag per passenger. You could also do a combination of checked bags and carry-ons. Whatever you choose, don't forget to add an  AirTag  or other  smart tracker  to make finding your luggage easier when the plane lands. Opting for bags with  built-in locks  is a good idea too, just so you can keep prying eyes away from what you're taking with you.

Jetblue brings back perk for passengers who book cheapest tickets.

GET LOCAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

JetBlue announced Tuesday that it was bringing back a perk for passengers who purchase basic economy tickets for flights.

Beginning Friday, Sept. 6, customers who are traveling on JetBlue’s Blue Basic fare, will receive a free carry-on bag, in addition to their small personal item, regardless of when they purchased their ticket.

Blue Basic is how JetBlue refers to its basic economy fare.

Previously, customers who wished to bring a carry-on bag would need to purchase one of JetBlue’s other fare options.

The move aligns JetBlue with its Logan Airport rival Delta, who also offers a basic economy fare that allows passengers to bring a carry-on bag.

When JetBlue first introduced basic economy fares in 2019, the fare included a carry-on bag. That perk was eliminated in early 2021 .

"Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner," Marty St. George, JetBlue's president, said in a news release.

"This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry," St. George said.

The move comes as ultra-low-cost carriers adjust their product offerings for customers, shifting toward more upfront pricing.

Last month, Frontier Airlines introduced a new "economy" bundle, which includes a carry-on bag and seat assignment, which starts at $30 more than the base fare.

United Airlines still prohibits its basic economy travelers from bringing full-size carry-on luggage that fits in overhead bins.

American Airlines passenger tracks missing luggage to homeless encampment

HOLLYWOOD (WKRC) - An American Airlines passenger tracked her missing luggage to a homeless encampment in Hollywood.

According to KNBC, American Airlines passenger Aunny Grace is demanding answers from the airline company after her luggage ended up in a homeless encampment. Per the station, Grace's flight from Dallas Airport on May 29 was delayed.

"American Airlines left thousands of people stranded in the airport overnight for days, actually,” Grace told KNBC.

Grace told the station Tuesday that she spent the night at the airport and caught a flight home to Hollywood Burbank Airport the next day. Although Grace knew her luggage would be delayed, she was left perplexed by what happened next, according to KNBC.

“When the carrier called me, he said he was at my house. I looked and I saw my AirTag twinkling down Western Avenue very slowly, like no direction, really," Grace told the outlet. "I knew intuitively something was wrong. Something was way off."

According to the station, the wrong suitcase was delivered five days later. Tracking the Apple AirTag located inside her luggage, Grace was able to locate the bag at the homeless encampment.

"Sometime between midnight and 7 a.m., my bag wound up in Homeless Town Hollywood. I'm just crying, grabbing my stuff," Grace told KNBC. "I had jewelry, medicine, bags I bought from Bali in Peru. My toiletry bag was flipped upside down, completely empty. Makeup bag, empty. This homeless man just ransacked through my stuff."

Grace told the outlet that a homeless man informed her that he had brought the bag down the street. She told KNBC that she wanted to know how her luggage went from the Burbank Airport to a homeless encampment.

During her search, Grace told the station's reporters that she noticed other bags with American Airline tags on them at the encampment. She also filed a report with the airport police, claiming the section with delayed luggage is not in a secure area.

“Anyone could walk by and just grab bags, one pick-up one after the other. There were hundreds of bags out in the open, away from eye shot of the office,” Grace told the outlet.

American Airlines reached out to Grace and offered to reimburse up to $1,700 for her lost items. Grace claims the offer was well below the $6,300 value of her items, however, according to KNBC.

"We strive to ensure that our customers’ checked luggage and other items arrive at their destinations on schedule and in their original condition. We are investigating what occurred here and in the meantime, a member of our team is in contact with the customer to apologize and resolve the issue," American Airlines said in a statement obtained by KNBC.

Grace told the station that she wanted answers from American Airlines, saying she didn't want any other travelers to experience the headache she has.

“It's going to keep happening until someone takes responsibility. This has to be placed on the responsibility of the airline,” Grace told KNBC.

Due to her experience, Grace told the outlet that she chose to drive across the country to visit family in Boston.

The Burbank police told KNBC that they have Grace's report, but according to the station, it is the responsibility of the airline carrier to ensure passengers' items are delivered.

JetBlue To Grant A Free Carry-On With Basic Economy Fares Starting This September

  • JetBlue's Blue Basic fare now includes one carry-on bag, matching American and Delta's offerings with basic fares.
  • Passengers with the Basic Blue fare are last to board but may choose the Blue fare for earlier boarding and more benefits.
  • Recent changes at JetBlue include bringing back carry-on bags for Blue Basic fares, a CEO change, and fleet transitions to the Airbus A220.

Starting this fall, passengers flying on JetBlue's Blue Basic fare will be able to take one carry-on bag on flights.

Carryon bags are back

Twelve years ago, Delta Air Lines became the first American carrier to introduce a basic economy fare. Five years later, American Airlines and United Airlines followed suit. The goal was to create a fare offering more competition to low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

JetBlue has its own basic economy product called Blue Basic. Passengers flying on the airline's lowest fare are not eligible to take a carry-on bag on board, but only a personal item that fits under the seat. From September 6th, this will change. JetBlue announced earlier today that its Basic Blue passengers will be entitled to one carry-on bag in addition to their personal items.

By making this move, JetBlue can match American and Delta's offerings, which include carry-on bags with basic fares. Marty St. George, who recently returned to JetBlue as president, said the airline hopes to remain competitive.

Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlues award-winning service and another carriers basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner. We're always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences."

It is important to note that passengers with the Basic Blue fare are the last to board, and overhead bin space is subject to availability on any flight. If passengers want to board earlier and have free advanced seat selection, the airline's second-lowest fare, Blue, is the perfect option. The Blue fare also includes no cancelation or change fees and general boarding.

Three years ago, JetBlue removed carry-on bags from the Blue Basic fares. The airline had said in an internal memo that removing the carry-on allowance was a way to set the Blue Basic price apart. Now, it is evident that the airline has seen the value of carry-ons and has reverted its decision.

Recent changes

Since the court ruling that JetBlue would not be able to acquire Spirit Airlines, the airline has been on a marching path forward and making changes. In recent months, it has had a CEO change and brought Marty St. George back as President. JetBlue has also announced future fleet plans and has taken several steps toward expansion.

Earlier this year, JetBlue said it would begin phasing out its Embraer E190 and E195 aircraft and opt to move forward with the Airbus A220. Earlier this week, Simple Flying reported that from April 2025, JetBlue will no longer operate Embraer aircraft from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

JetBlue Planning To Shift All Embraer E190 Operations At New York-JFK To Boston Before Retirement

The Airbus A220 has been Embraer's main rival in the aircraft market. Following the success of its E-Jets, Embraer developed the E2 family, which includes the E190-E2 and E195-E2. However, neither of the latest-generation jets operates in the US. JetBlue's A220s have 140 seats, slightly more than the E195-E2s' capacity of 132 passengers. JetBlue has added more since its first order for A220s and will operate a fleet of 100.
