Are you planning a trip to Bangladesh and looking to visit Sylhet? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know when looking for the coolest places to visit and things to do in Sylhet.

I never completed an article so quickly as this one. I was still in Bangladesh and my trip to Sylhet was just a couple days old, but I was still full of excitement and wanted to share my adventures with you. Traveling to Bangladesh is already off the beaten path but when you decide to visit Sylhet you are surely an avid world traveler.

If you are visiting Bangladesh you must definitely try to make time in your itinerary to travel to Sylhet in the Northeast of Bangladesh and with this list of cool things to do I hope to convince you.

1. Visit the Lala Khal Tea Gardens

One of the main places to visit in Sylhet are the tea plantations. There are many tea plantations around but the Lala Khal Tea gardens are the most beautiful ones to visit. To get here you will need to take a little boat trip across the river and once you walked pass the gate you can make your own way around the tea plantations.

Like all tourist attractions in Bangladesh the experience is real! There are no museums here or places where they make you taste their tea and try to sell you something. The main source of income is tea leaves and not tourism. Wander your way up to the top of the tea gardens and find hidden local villages in the hills.

These people will be waiting for you with a big smile and are happy to interact and have your pictures taken. Western tourists are a rarity. Simply another fantastic experience in Bangladesh!

2. Boat trip on the Sharee River

Bangladesh is almost completely flat and with so many rivers flowing through the country there are plenty opportunities to hop on a boat. When you travel to Sylhet this is one of the most relaxing things to do and a great way to see the countryside and life on the riverbank from a different perspective.

In the Jaflong area you can witness the stone collecting business from the water, the main source of income in this region. On the Lala Khal side you will float on the river alongside tea plantations, river beaches and local life all the way up to the Indian border.

3. Camp on the riverbank

If you are up for an adventure when you travel to Sylhet then I have the perfect thing for you: stay overnight in a luxurious Tent Camp on the river bank. Due to the monsoon season this is only available from October to March in the area of Lala Khal. But sleeping on the beach under a million stars right on the river bank must be incredible! I have to plan a trip to Sylhet again to experience this myself.

4. Local cooking class

In Lala Khal I also enjoyed a local cooking class organized by our hotel. Not a standard cooking class but one in a local home preparing dishes on a wood fire. We picked our own vegetables in the garden behind the house and helped the family preparing our meals. If you want to get in touch with locals this is a great way when you travel to Sylhet.

5. Local market in Jaintiapur

For a real local experience make sure you don’t miss the local market in Jaintiapur, which is held every Wednesday and Saturday. This seriously is one of the best things to do in Sylhet as more authentic than this is it won’t get.

As a foreigner I was the main attraction here and literally people would stop and stare when I passed by. Simply out of curiosity as not many tourists make it here. See the live video for an impression of this tourist attraction in Sylhet only very few people know about.

Locals come here to buy vegetables, fruit, live animals, fish, get a haircut, drink tea and meet with friends all in one market. Incredible!

6. Visit the Khasi Tribe

The Christian Khasi population in Bangladesh resides on a tiny peninsula on the India border surrounded by the Goyain River. Visiting the local village is an incredible experience where you can get dressed up in the local attire and feel like a prince.

7. Visit a workers camp at the Quarry

Bangladesh has many faces in there is no need to hide that poverty is also a side of this country. You will most definitely stumble upon some places were people live in extremely basic condition and I understand that this is not a Sylhet tourist attraction.

But if you want to meet the most friendly people ever and are in need of an eye-opener of how blessed you are in life then go visit the quarry on the riverbank in Jaflong. The people here live in tent camps next to the quarry. Walking around here felt like a Hollywood film set, almost unreal!

8. Step into India

Sylhet is like a landlocked peninsula in Bangladesh surrounded by India and because of that there are a ton of border crossings all around. In and between the control posts there is 50 meters of nomandsland where you can have your picture taken with one foot in India and one foot in Bangladesh. A typical Western tourist attraction in Sylhet! Lol ;)

If you travel to Bangladesh as a foreigner it is cheaper to travel over land by the way. On Dhaka airport will you pay $51 dollar for your visa here at the border crossings in Sylhet only $8. :) I have some old blogs about India from the time I just started blogging, they are a funny read.

9. Visit Local villages

Along your way there are a ton of local villages to explore. Be brave make your driver stop and wander around. There is no need to be scared or anything like that.

Local people love to see you coming. They will all stop what they are doing and they will stare at you. Not staring in a way that it is intimidating, but in a way that they look up to you.

There will hardly be anyone who will say no when you ask for a picture, but expect to get a ton of selfies taken with you too. :)

10. Try a 7 layer tea in Sylhet

Apparently this is a typical thing to do in Sylhet so I could not resist either. Ask around in your hotel and someone will point you in the right direction where to find the famous local tea: 7 layer tea. It took about 15 minutes to make two cups of tea but it was waiting for. Ingredients: black tea, milk tea, ginger tea, lemongrass tea, sugar and two more, but I forgot about them.

11. Marvel at amazing sunsets

The flatlands and swamps all around Sylhet turn into a mystical landscape around sunset. The shadows of the trees become longer with each minute that passes and I am sure somewhere in the distance you will see a group of local kids playing football. A peaceful and serene setting and that is exatly what Sylhet in Bangladesh is.

12. Enjoy a jungle pool

On a hectic trip to Bangladesh I am sure you are going to be excited when you get a moment to relax. So therefore when visiting Sylhet I recommend you to find one of these jungle pools in some of the better hotels. They will allow admission for tourists even if you are not staying there.

These pools will give you that Bali vibe a little bit with endless jungle around you, sounds of the birds and lush green gardens. Especially in the summer months this is the best way to end your day sightseeing in Sylhet.

13. Ratargul Swamp Forest

Last but not least one of the best things to do in Sylhet is a trip to the Ratargul Swamp Forest. The road to get here is bumpy but once you are floating on a little boat peddled forward by a friendly local you forget everything.

This extremely peaceful ride through the swamps is the ultimate place to find peace in this bustling country.

The beautiful mangroves are a protected area where you can find endemic species of wildlife like the pygmy-goose.

There are also hiking trails and a watch tower to climb up to. A 1 hour private boat ride in Ratargul Swamp Forest should not cost more than 1,000 BDT = $9 USD.

14. Meet the queen

One of the best things to do in Sylhet is unfortunately not for everyone available. But if you are in the position and you have the right contacts you might be able to arrange a meeting with the queen of the Khasi tribe in Sylhet. I was among the lucky people to be invited at her house, sip tea and learn about the life of a royal. This experience made my trip to Sylhet extra special!

Where to stay in Sylhet

Nazimgarh wilderness.

I would recommend staying close to the action and therefore take a look at the Wilderness Resort. This beautiful hotel is literally located in the tea plantations and an extremely peaceful place to rejuvenate. The rooms are clustered around the refreshing pool and the onside restaurant serves delicious food. The staff is extremely helpful and they can arrange all the above things to do in Sylhet.

The big advantage about Wilderness is that the tea plantations are within walking distance and so is the boat trip on the river. The hotel is located in an off the beaten path location a stone throw away from the Indian border.

Garden Resort

Closer to the mangrove forest you can find another great option to stay in Sylhet: the Garden Resort. This resort with a hilltop swimming pool, multiple restaurants and suites with their own Jacuzzis is only 15 minutes away from Sylhet city and the airport, but located in a lush green garden away from the hustle and bustle of Bangladeshi countryside life.

Some extra tips for traveling to Sylhet

Best local sim card for sylhet.

Wi-Fi signal in Sylhet is weak and not the fastest. As a foreigner I would recommend you to get a Grameen sim card. This mobile provider has good service up here, were Banglalink fails most of the times.

I wish someone had given me this tip before my trip to Sylhet. You can easily buy a Grameen sim card in Dhaka.

No WiFi, no phone reception so time to enjoy the view from Wilderness Resort Sylhet.

Prepare for bad road conditions

When you travel to Sylhet expect though road conditions. If you get carsick easily opt for a seat in the front and prepare to thrown around the car avoiding one pothole after another. They say it is not about the destination, but it is the journey that counts. Not in this case trust me! ;)

Bring mosquito spray

Make sure to bring mosquito spray when you visit Sylhet. Probably everywhere you go in Bangladesh have mosquito spray on you. It is only bad around sunset and just after, but it can save you a lot of bites. Or just wear long pants and sleeves! ;)

Try Betel Nut

Not a recommend activity when traveling to Sylhet! But since there are so many betel nut trees around and so many people are chewing betel nut, I also had to try it. It was my first time trying Betel Nut and I regret as soon as I put it in my mouth. Damn this stuff is bitter.

Where is Sylhet Bangladesh?

Sylhet is about 250 kilometers northeast of the capital Dhaka and the most northeastern division in Bangladesh. It is almost completely surrounded by India with border crossings in the north, east and south.

How to get to Sylhet

There are several daily flights from Dhaka with US-Bangla and NovoAir. The domestic airport in Dhaka is not as crazy as the international airport although delays are common. The flight from Dhaka to Sylhet is only 30 minutes in a propeller plane, but traveling can take up to a couple hours because of the delays. There are also international routes serving Sylhet Bangladesh and you are able to find flights from London and Dubai.

Tourist busses with AC go on a regular basis from Dhaka to Sylhet and take about 6 hours. Price: between $8 - $13.

The most adventurous way to get to Sylhet is to take the train. Several trains a day go from Dhaka to Sylhet and back and are cheap. The train ride is beautiful!

This map shows you all the best places to visit in Sylhet and where to find them. When asking me how many days I would recommend to travel to Sylhet I would say about 3 to 4 days is enough. You can even do most of the things to do on this list in just 2 days, but it would be very rushed.

According to a lot of people Bangladesh is not safe, but the fact that this is a crazy country, does not make it a dangerous country.

A short path leading west from the church goes to the settlement of the indigenous Garo people. Takerghat and the Borochora Stones Quarry are located beyond the Garo settlement.

9. Tangoar Haor

The enormous swampland known as Tangoar Haor, which covers an area of almost 100 square kilometers, is located at the foot of the Meghalaya hills in the center of Tahirpur as well as Dharmapasha Upazilla under the Sunamgonj district in north-east Sylhet. About 30 waterfalls cascade into this vast body of water from the Meghalaya, giving it a genuinely unique beauty.

A wide variety of birds call Tangoar Haor, a vital center for biodiversity, home. In the winter, a large number of migrating birds join the local birds, creating a relaxing wealth of wildlife. There are 51 different species of birds in all. Along with uncommon varieties of migratory bird species like huge grey king storks and Palace eagles.

10. Madhabkunda Eco Park

The Sylhet neighborhood of Moulvibazar includes Madhabkunda, where the Madhabkunda Eco Park is situated. The Park has 267 acres of space. It was created in 2001 to save the nearby wildlife and Madhabkunda waterfalls. The major draw of this Eco Park is the Madhabkunda waterfall, which is around 200 feet (61 meters) high. Khasia’s indigenous groups live in the hamlet and operate agriculture-based businesses in the forest.

The waterfall, which is Bangladesh’s biggest natural waterfall, draws thousands of visitors each year. The tourists are attracted by the various-sized stones, the neighboring forest, and the ongoing waterfall. When you get to this Sylhet tourist spot, the 200-foot-high river flow and the enormous stone boulders will no sure enchant you.

Bisnakandi is a beautiful place, adorned with hills, stones, waterfall and river. You can go to this place especially on the month of June-July or August-September. especially during the rainy season, to have a nice view of current in water.

By walking over the stones in water and feeling the coldness,you will have a heavenly feeling! But as the stones are getting slippery day by day, so you must be careful while walking.

To have a secured tour there, either you should be a swimmer or you should have a swimmer beside you always. Since it’s beside the border of India-Bangladesh, you must be careful too while swimming or roaming in the area.

Moreover, you can visit the tribal people of Khashiya and overall, I assure you that Bisnakandi won’t fail to amaze you, not at all!

02. Jaflong

Jaflong is a hill station of Sylhet which is located in Gowainghat upazilla. It is situated in border between Bangladesh and the Indian state of Meghalaya and is one the oldest tourist spots in Sylhet.

In Jaglong, the hanging bridge of Dawki mainly attracts the tourists. Due to the complications of border crossing. you can only watch it from a certain distance while you’re there.

there’s also a Beautiful waterfall in Jaglong . i can ensure you the waterfall will blw your mind.

Like Bisnakandi, without any doubt, It’s also a nature blessed place which has hills and stones around it . The transparency of the river Dawki always pleases the eyes of the tourists.

03. Ratargul Swamp Forest

Ratargul, the only swamp forest of Bangladesh, is located in Gowainghat River, Sylhet. It’s known as not only ‘The Sunderban of Sylhet’, but also ‘The Amazon of Bangla’. It’s area is of almost 3, 325.61 acres.

The forest is under 20–30 feet water in the rainy season and on the other times of the year, the water level is about 10 feet deep. You can hire a local boat for one or two hours and have look at the forest thoroughly when you go there.

you can also ride on the Watch Tower. which was the favourite part of mine in whole Ratargul tour. it serves you with the full view of the forest. And by standing on the top, trust me, I felt like it’s really treat to my eyes! among this list of Top 10 Tourist Places in Sylhet this is my most favorite.

04. Shahjalal Dargah

Hazrat Shahjalal (R), whose name is associated with the spread of Islam into north-eastern Bengal through Sufism, came to Sylhet in 1303 CE and died there in 1346 CE and later he was buried there too. His shrine is very famous in Sylhet and everyday his divotees from all over the country, visit this place. That’s why this place is always crowded.

The largest mosque in Sylhet and also known as one of the largest mosques in Bangladesh is in the Dargah. There is a pond at the northern end of the Dargah area, which is filled with sacred Catfish.

Many people of Sylhet bury their near and dear ones at the Mazar area as It’s considered to be an honour to be buried near the Shrine of the Saint.

If you visit Sylhet, then you should visit the Dargah, no matter of which religion you’re, because there’s no rules that non Muslims can’t enter this place. Even non Muslims go there and make mannats. Moreover, women can enter there too.

05. Lalakhal

You can experience three beautiful things together in Lalakhal. 1. green water river 2. range of mountain and 3. tea garden.

‘Lalakhal’ is actually the name of a village and the main place you will visit in Lalakhal is River Sharee, which’s water is transparent Green all over the year and the color of the river is Green because of the minerals under the water and sandy river bed.

You can go to the main tourist point by renting a boat from Shareeghat.

You can also visit Nazimgarh Resort in Lalakhal as It’s just on the bank of the river Sharee. There is a restaurant in Nazimgarh resort. but I would suggest you to not waste your money by eating something there as the food price is unbelievably and illogically high.

06. Pang Thu Mai

It’s the name of a village of Gowainghat upazilla and It’s a bordering area which covers both Bangladesh and India.

The village looks Incredibly beautiful as it’s under the hills of Indian state of Meghalaya. Although the actual waterfall is geographica

lly in India. but tourists of Bangladesh can also see that from a certain distance.

Flowing from the Borhill Fall is a branch of the river Piyain and eventually that leads to Bisnakandi. it is considered as another major tourist spot. The best time to visit this place is the time of April to September.

07. Kean Bridge

The Keane Bridge is a renowned landmark of Sylhet city, which is called as ‘The gateway to Sylhet city’. It is on the river Surma.

The bridge was named after Sir Micheal Keane. he was the governor of Assam province of India. the Bridge was built in the year 1936. The bridge is 1150 feet tall and it’s width is 18 feet.

While you’re in Sylhet, you can go there by rickshaw or CNG auto rickshaw from the Sylhet town. I am pretty sure that by going there, you will not regret to see one of the oldest bridges of Bangladesh.

08. Malnichara Tea Garden

The reasons for which Sylhet division is very popular, tea garden is one of them and we know that Sylhet is called as ‘A Land of Tea Gardens’.

Malnichara Tea Estate is known as the most ancient densely planted tea garden, which was established in 1854.

It is located at Airport road of Sylhet, in the main town in fact. After reaching at Sylhet main town, you can take either rickshaw or any other local transport to reach this place.

09. Khadimnagar National Park

The place is situated about 15 km away from Sylhet city in Khadimnagar Union of Sylhet. It is surrounded by 6 tea gardens and the topography of the park is hilly. It was declared as a national park in October, 2009.

This place is not like many other forests in Bangladesh because the tree cover there has increased in recent years. You should go there to observe the diversity of commoner forest wildlife.

And while returning from the Khadimnagar, you can make a visit to the Mazar of Shah Paran (R) as It’ll be on your way back to Sylhet.

10. Bholaganj

Bholaganj is 33 km away to the north from Sylhet city. It is the largest stone quarry in Bangladesh which is filled with hills, rivers and waterfalls.

The main spots that draw the attention of the tourists to this place are – the Meghalayan clouds, waterfalls from hills, the sandy shores of the Dholai, ceaseless streams and transparent water of the river.

Although the place is very nice, but the way to go there is not. The road that leads to Bholaganj is in a very bad condition. So, you must prepare yourself first for the journey.

Ratargul Swamp Forest

You must already read my post on Ratargul Swamp Forest , right? Then you understood my love for this most beautiful and yes this is one of the top tourist attractions in Sylhet. Just imagine you’re entering into a beautiful natural freshwater swamp forest by boat. The total area is almost 504 acres and covered with various types of water plants. A boat ride is the best way to explore the extreme beauty of this forest.

The amazing greeneries and the tranquility around. And the whole forest is connected with the Gowain river and the Chengir Lake. During Rainy Season all trees go under 20 to 30 feet water. The water reflection looks so beautiful. How thrilling!! It does so and must-visit for all adventure seekers around the world.

A long journey by an engine boat on the beautiful Piyain river will take you to the beautiful destination Bisnakandi . Yes, a boat ride on the river Piyain can be your memorable experience. You’ll love the rural landscape and the mountain views around this destination. Bisnakandi is the popular tourist spot in Sylhet these days. The crystal clear water and rolling stones are the main attractions here.

A boat ride on the river Piyain can also lead you to Panthumai . The top attractions here are the Borhill waterfall. Though this fall is not the part of Bangladesh for the transboundary river Piyain, Panthumai became popular among tourists in Sylhet. The beauty of the entire destination is just outstanding. The administration of Sylhet district has reopened several tourist spots, such as Jaflong, Ratargul Swamp Forest, and Tanguar Haor, to visitors on Sunday following improvements in the flood situation.

Tourists, tour operators, and boatmen have been instructed to adhere to administrative directives to ensure safety and order.

The decision to reopen these tourist spots was made by the Upazila Tourism Committee, contingent on favourable weather conditions in the district.

A team led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Saidul Islam from the Gowainghat upazila administration inspected the Jaflong tourist spot on Friday and Saturday to assess readiness for reopening.

To ensure passenger safety, boat owners and operators in Gowainghat have been directed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Touhidul Islam to provide adequate life jackets for all passengers travelling by boat and other vessels.

Despite ongoing concerns with river levels, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) data indicates that the Surma and Kushiyara rivers remain above danger levels at various points. However, no rainfall was recorded in Sylhet on Sunday, according to the latest BWDB bulletin.

Tourist police have been deployed to all reopened tourist spots to enforce security and safety measures, demonstrating the administration's commitment to providing a secure environment for visitors.

Additionally, as a safety precaution, children under the age of 12 are prohibited from travelling by boat in Jaflong. Tourist police have been specifically tasked with ensuring the security of all visitors.

Initially closed on Tuesday due to deteriorating flood conditions, all tourist spots in Sylhet were reopened following the recent improvement, under the direction of Sylhet Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobarak Hossain.

Previously, on May 30, the Upazila Tourist Development Committee, led by its convener, decided to close all tourist spots during the first phase of flooding. These locations were subsequently reopened on June 7.

A little over a week ago, more than 16 lakh people in Bangladesh's Sylhet and Sunamganj districts found themselves marooned by escalating floodwaters. Despite the strikingly similar climates of Bangladesh and Miami in Florida, US, where I work as a landscape architect, the outcomes of heavy rainfall in these two regions are starkly different. Miami's approach harnesses nature's inherent mechanisms through creative and proactive solutions, turning challenges into opportunities. Meanwhile, the Sylhet region endured devastation due to flash floods, prompting the urgent question: why does Bangladesh still face such situations in 2024?

Bangladesh is a treasure trove of untapped landscape potential. It can transform its current challenges into opportunities by leveraging its natural assets. This requires a shift from reactive disaster management to proactive landscape design and management. Flood prevention is only one aspect; optimising the terrain and balancing human settlement with nature are equally crucial.

Flood in Sylhet is the price we’re paying for ignoring nature

For Bangladesh, establishing a dedicated ministry for landscape design and management is not just visionary, but necessary. This ministry would oversee the comprehensive planning, development, and maintenance of the country's diverse landscapes, addressing long-standing challenges. For one, the country's extensive network of rivers could be harnessed for transportation, irrigation, and flood management. Currently neglected and polluted, these rivers need strategic rejuvenation. Drawing inspiration from the Netherlands , where river systems are integral to national infrastructure, the Bangladesh government could revitalise the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta.

Properly managed natural resources could drive tourism, agriculture, and cultural activities, fuelling economic growth. The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, exemplifies this potential. As a biodiversity hotspot and potential ecotourism destination, its proper management and promotion could attract global tourists, generate revenue, and create jobs. Costa Rica's ecotourism success through sustainable practices serves as a model for Bangladesh.

Urbanisation and climate change threaten Bangladesh's rich biodiversity and natural habitats. Sustainable practices are essential to conserving and protecting these areas. For example, conserving the Chittagong Hill Tracts, known for their unique flora and fauna , could preserve biodiversity while supporting local communities through eco-friendly tourism and sustainable agriculture.

Effective water resource management is critical in a flood-prone country like Bangladesh. Designing and maintaining infrastructure for efficient water management could also promote water-based tourism and recreational activities. Italy's Venice showcases how waterways can become major tourist attractions while managing complex water infrastructure.

Promoting landscape innovation and modern agricultural practices can boost productivity and sustainability. Integrating vertical farming and aquaponics into urban areas can combat food insecurity and reduce pressure on rural lands. Singapore's advancements in urban farming illustrate how Bangladesh could innovate in agriculture.

Who will save the planet? Certainly not its killers.

Raising awareness about landscape management's importance and engaging citizens in conservation efforts is vital. Educational initiatives can foster a culture of stewardship, where every citizen feels responsible for the environment. Programmes modelled after Japan's Satoyama Initiative , which promotes sustainable rural-urban linkages through community participation, could be effective.

To realise this vision, Bangladesh must recognise the critical role of landscape architecture . Landscape architects can guide the nation's landscape policies and projects with their expertise. Singapore's green, sustainable urban environments highlight the benefits of skilled landscape architects. They can design resilient cities that harmonise with natural systems, ensuring urban development does not come at the expense of environmental degradation. They can lead projects that integrate green infrastructure, enhance biodiversity, and create public spaces that improve quality of life.

Establishing a ministry for landscape design and management symbolises a collective commitment to transforming Bangladesh's landscape. It heralds a new era where design and nature work in harmony, elevating the quality of life and dignity of every citizen. This vision transcends flood prevention and resource management—it's about creating a nation where every individual feels a sense of pride and responsibility towards their environment. A specialised ministry would help realise this vision, emphasising the optimal use and preservation of the country's natural resources. By adopting this perspective, design can significantly enhance the quality of life and sense of dignity for the people. It's time for Bangladesh to build a future where development and conservation of nature take place simultaneously.
