In the Philippines, community is everything. The term bayanihan describes how people work together to uplift their fellow kabayans (countrymen). And this isn’t just in times of crisis: in the past, whole villages would help a family relocate their nipa hut (lifting them using bamboo poles).

Today, this manifests in neighbourly acts of kindness. Fixing your house? Thirsty after a long day of tuk tuk driving? Your kabayans have got your back.

As a traveller, it pays to heed how ‘bayanihan spirit’ will impact your trip. For example, if you’ve paid an entrance fee to an attraction, be aware that your guide’s tip is likely what makes up their salary; what you paid to get in is invested back into the community.

This of course doesn’t apply to bigger tour operators, which is why supporting smaller, independent businesses is a virtuous practice here.

The humble jeepney is a Philippine icon: WW2-era Japanese cargo trucks repurposed into colourful passenger vehicles. You’ll find these chugging along everywhere, ferrying locals as the country’s most common mode of public transportation.

It may seem daunting, but it’s a surefire way to save money (a single ride is around eight pesos or 12 pence), and get a feel for local life.

To pay for your trip, you’ve got to rely on a little bayanihan spirit: pass your cash down the line of passengers to the driver (it’s best to pay the exact amount so they don’t have to multitask).

Getting to your destination is a little trickier: you won’t find any official schedules or maps, so your best bet is to get talking. Jeepney terminals usually have ‘barkers’ who guide people onto vehicles, otherwise, just ask your fellow passengers – most Filipinos speak at least conversational English.

To stop, shout “para po!” (please stop), or pull the string along the roof to turn on the ‘stop light’. It may seem daunting at first, but trust the process!

Things in the Philippines run on a more relaxed schedule; otherwise known as ‘island time’, or ‘Filipino time’. So travellers should be flexible and agile in arranging trips – expect delays in transport schedules, especially in remote areas.

If you find yourself waiting anywhere for too long, look up, enjoy the view, and ask yourself a simple question for some perspective: when else are you going to be sat on a lush tropical island ?

The Philippines carries a deep respect for older generations: the longer you’ve lived, the more you’ve experienced – and that deserves recognition. This is honoured with a traditional gesture known as mano po.

When encountering an elderly person, Filipinos will bow their heads, gently take their elder’s hand and place it on their forehead.

If you find yourself visiting someone’s grandparents, make sure to do this and pay your respects (and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a big pinch on the cheek like my lola (grandmother) used to do).

More generally, people use the term po at the end of sentences when addressing those in more senior positions. This includes elderly folk, but also applies to bosses, parents, relatives; you’ll also notice service people will use it when talking to customers.

If you’re flexing your Tagalog skills, suffix your phrases with ‘po’ for extra street cred.

Like other Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines has clamped down on waste imports in recent years; famously sending over 1,500 tonnes of rubbish back to Canada in 2019.

The region has historically been a dumping ground for the Global North, resulting in mountains of rubbish that endanger wildlife and local communities.

If you’re going to more remote areas you’ll need to travel smart. Bring an extra bag for your trash, especially if visiting beaches that may not have waste bins.

Don’t take or buy seashells: they actually provide homes and food for marine life and help filter out pollution in seawater.

And when you’re done with your beer bottles, keep an eye out for local bottle collectors who get paid to deliver these to recycling centres.

If you plan on surviving the Philippines on a staple diet of chicken and rice, you’re sorely missing out. Uniquely sweet, salty and sour, Filipino food is as diverse as the 7,000 islands that make up the archipelago.

When in Cebu , make a beeline for the lechon kawali at Leslie’s Lechon: slow, spit roasted pork with golden crispy skin. If you find yourself in Angeles City, Pampanga, try the famous sisig at Aling Lucing Sisig (it’s where the dish was invented, and was made famous in Anthony Bourdain’s Explore Parts Unknown): pork cheek and liver seasoned with calamansi, served on a fiery, sizzling platter.

And while in Manila, take the opportunity to try sinigang at Corazon: a fresh, zesty stew of fish and vegetables, soured by tomatoes or tamarind.

A few notes on eating etiquette: Filipinos typically eat with a fork and spoon (all the better to scoop up that rice with), but will sometimes use their hands to really mix flavours together. Most restaurants provide hand wipes for just this reason, so don’t be afraid to get stuck in.

Shot na! Filipinos love a good drink, which is reflected in a vibrant drinking culture. Weekends see punters pack videoke halls, glitzy bars, and fiestas, revelling well into the night with their pulutan (drinking snacks).

The booze here packs a punch, with staple beer Red Horse standing at 8% ABV. If there’s one drink to keep an eye on it’s Tanduay Rum: an intoxicating blend that sears your throat but goes down a little too easily with coca-cola.

There really isn’t a word-for-word equivalent of ‘cheers’ in the Philippines. Most clink their glasses to a simple ‘chug’, or ‘shot’, or even the Japanese ‘kanpai’ (a taste of the national love for all things J and K-pop).

But when it comes to the drinking, things get uniquely Filipino. If you find yourself with a local group, someone acts as the tangerro: a person designated to pour drinks.

The Philippines has a reputation for its friendly local attitudes - the tourism tagline ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines’ isn’t for nothing! However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you ever find yourself in someone’s hospitable care.

If a local invites you out for a meal, they may feel obliged to pay for your share. So if you want to split the bill, make this explicit before you meet up.

Conversely, you may be expected to cover costs if you’ve extended the invitation (and if you’re out celebrating your birthday, people will assume you’re paying for everyone - which can get expensive real quick, take it from me).

If you’ve crossed someone, they may not make it obvious. ‘Saving face’ culture is big in the Philippines, where some people avoid blunt honesty if it means dodging confrontation or embarrassment. So if you can tell something’s off, take the initiative to apologise and remove that burden from them.

Cheap costs make the Philippines a great destination for budget travellers, but always make sure to carry extra cash in case you run into surprises. These include pesky Airport Terminal Fees that can set you back up to 750 pesos (£11) for international flights (and usually between 150-250 pesos for domestic travel).

Luckily in Manila and Boracay this is included in your plane ticket price. However, if you’re transferring from the likes of Cebu or Iloilo you’ll need to fork out cash (and we mean cash literally – there’s no option to pay by card).

Also watch out for ATM charges when taking money out. You’ll find the best rates when withdrawing from BDI, BPO or Metrobank cash points. It pays to take out a decent amount to avoid repeat ATM visits, with 10,000 pesos (£150) enough to last you a few comfortable days.

In the Philippines, karaoke is more than just a way to unwind: it’s a community ritual. Love ballads are a popular choice, and these are sung without a hint of irony - even in the rowdiest groups, a person’s turn to take the mic is treated with a keen respect. If you find yourself next to a karaoke machine, keep this in mind and don’t be shy to give it a go!

You’ll find karaoke in every barangay (neighbourhood) across the country, so take the opportunity to get involved in the nation’s favourite pastime.

Why Choose a Travel Agency in the Philippines?

Travel agencies play a crucial role in crafting memorable travel experiences. They possess the local know-how, connections, and resources to make your trip effortless and enjoyable. Let's delve into why you should consider a travel agency for your next Filipino adventure.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agency

Time and Effort Savings: The travel agencies take the hassle out of planning. From booking flights and accommodations to arranging transportation and sightseeing activities, they handle it all. This allows you to save time and avoid stress, letting you focus solely on enjoying the experience.

Customized Experiences: Travel agencies can tailor trips according to your preferences. Whether you prefer adventurous outdoor activities or tranquil beach holidays, they can create a personalized itinerary that fits your travel style perfectly.

Insider Knowledge: Travel agencies have in-depth knowledge of the local scene. They can recommend lesser-known attractions, off-the-beaten-track locations, and unique cultural experiences that you might otherwise miss.

Personal Anecdotes or Examples

Let me share a personal experience. On my trip to the Philippines, I enlisted the services of a local travel agency. What struck me was their attention to detail and personal touch. They suggested a visit to the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, an attraction I hadn't heard of before.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

The sight of over a thousand symmetrical, grass-covered limestone mounds, turning chocolate brown in the dry season, was surreal. Without the agency's local insight, I would have missed out on this mesmerizing spectacle.

Safety and Risk Management

Travel agencies can also provide peace of mind regarding safety. In unfamiliar territories, unforeseen situations can arise. Whether it's a sudden change of weather at a beach resort or an unexpected closure of an attraction due to maintenance, travel agencies can navigate these disruptions. They have contingency plans in place and can swiftly provide alternative arrangements to ensure your trip remains smooth. This is especially valuable in a diverse country like the Philippines, where each island offers a unique set of attractions, cultures, and climates.

Travel Safety

The content herein is based on my personal experiences and insights gained over the years. It's important to remember that each person's travel needs and preferences are unique, and what works for one might not work for another. That's where the versatility and flexibility of travel agencies shine, and why I consider them a valuable ally in my journeys.

Keys to Consider When Choosing Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Tour operators remain responsible for their services. Although their roles sometimes overlap with travel agents, they can market directly to customers. Similarly, travel agents can curate and promote their own packages to clients. Making the right choice of a travel agency can be the difference between a memorable trip and an unfortunate experience. Here are a few factors to consider when selecting a travel agency in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Travel Safety

Safety is paramount when traveling. A reliable travel agency should have a strong focus on traveler's safety, providing useful advice, and ensuring that all services, including transportation and accommodations, meet safety standards. They should also have a swift response mechanism for any emergencies that may arise during your trip.

Expertise with Local Knowledge

A travel agency's local expertise is another crucial factor to consider. This includes understanding the best times to visit various destinations, knowing the local customs and culture, and having access to local resources. An agency with strong local knowledge can provide an authentic and enriching travel experience that you might not get by planning the trip on your own.

Convenience

Convenience plays a big role in enhancing your overall travel experience. Look for an travel agent that provides a seamless experience, from inquiry and booking to trip execution. This might include things like an easy-to-navigate website, convenient payment methods, a responsive customer service team, and personalized services that cater to your specific needs and preferences.

Range of Services Offered

The range of services offered by the travel agent is another important factor. A full-service agency that can handle all aspects of your trip, including airfare, accommodation, tours, transport, and even visa assistance, can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Price and Value for Money

While price is an important factor, the cheapest option may not always provide the best value. Consider what's included in the package and assess if it offers good value for your money. A slightly pricier package that includes all services, offers great experiences, and ensures your safety might provide better value in the long run.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies

With the internet being a major source of information, it's important to evaluate a travel agency's online presence.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Hotel and Resorts Reservations Vacation Packages to Asia

Check out the agency's online platforms for their vacation packages. Look for details about hotel and resort reservations in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Read through descriptions, check the inclusions, compare prices, and review terms and conditions. User reviews can also provide helpful insights.

International Tour Packages

If you're a resident of the Philippines looking for outbound travel options, check the agency's offerings for international tour packages. An travel agent with a wide range of international tours indicates strong global connections and a broad service range.

International Air Transport Association (IATA)

The agency's affiliation with recognized international organizations like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a good sign of credibility. IATA accreditation ensures that the travel agent adheres to industry standards and best practices, providing an extra layer of assurance for travelers.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision while choosing a travel agent for your next adventure in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies and the Impact of COVID-19

The global pandemic has caused a seismic shift in the travel industry. The once-thriving sector faced unprecedented challenges as countries closed their borders and travel restrictions became the new norm. Yet, amidst these adversities, travel agencies in the Philippines have demonstrated resilience and adaptability.

COVID-19

Many agencies pivoted to offer virtual tours, allowing travel enthusiasts to explore new destinations from the safety of their homes. Others have focused on promoting local tourism, encouraging Filipinos to discover the beauty of their own country.

Moreover, travel agencies have elevated their safety measures to ensure the health and wellbeing of travelers. This includes organizing trips to destinations with high health and safety standards, coordinating with suppliers who uphold rigorous sanitation protocols, and providing up-to-date travel advisories to clients.

Pre-trip health screenings, smaller travel groups, private transfers, contactless check-ins, and provision of sanitation essentials have become common features in holiday packages and bespoke services. By adopting these measures, travel agencies are playing their part in restoring traveler confidence and shaping the new normal in travel.

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

  • My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
  • We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
  • Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. We've sailed on other cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , but Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids' and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. We'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships in the Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Some may see this as a negative, but I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I love Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-size Cinderella sculpture — but I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship, from the dining rooms to the pools, felt crowded

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.

Correction: June 7, 2024 — An earlier version of this story mislabeled a photo of Disney Wish as Disney Wonder.

Lufthansa Insights not only shows new perspectives on the world and travel, but also offers more. Collect – and redeem – digital artworks

In the app, they can exchange their digital works of art for rewards such as award miles or status points – and convert them into NFTs. The abbreviation NFT stands for "Non-Fungible Token", a digital token that is stored in a blockchain. NFTs can be traded on certain online marketplaces. The Uptrip app is available in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. In addition to the editions of Insights Art, the app contains around 20 collections with roughly 400 cards on destinations, aircraft types and specials that travelers can collect on their flights and use for rewards.

To mark the launch of Lufthansa Insights Art, works by the artist collective eBoy have been available to choose from in the Uptrip app since the beginning of May. The graphic artists Steffen Sauerteig, Svend Smital, and Kai Vermehr joined forces to form eBoy in 1997 and developed a special style of depicting people, objects, and entire cities – in the form of pixels. eBoy are famous for their pixoramas of international metropolises. In the art scene, the collective is considered the undisputed master of pixel art.

The eBoy special edition for Uptrip comprises 30 trading cards depicting figures in the collective’s unmistakable pixel art style. Each one represents a particular lifestyle or character. In addition, there are pixoramas, digital hidden object pictures, of the new Allegris destinations: currently Vancouver, Toronto, and Munich, with Chicago and Montreal to follow in July. The trading cards can be selected on all Allegris flights.

The European Championship special edition starts on June 14, and collectors’ cards can be selected on all flights to and from destinations in the participating countries throughout the European Championship.

MANILA: The Philippine coast guard on Friday (Jun 7) accused its Chinese counterpart of blocking efforts to evacuate a sick armed forces member in the South China Sea, calling it "barbaric and inhumane".

The incident, which the Philippines said took place last month, involved a member of a small contingent of marines posted to guard the BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine vessel grounded at the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, the site of repeated confrontations with China  over the past year.

Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela said coast guard and navy boats were harassed by Chinese vessels, despite having informed them the operation was of a medical nature.

"The barbaric and inhumane behaviour displayed by the China coast guard has no place in our society," Tarriela said in a statement.

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday it will allow the Philippines to deliver supplies and evacuate personnel if Manila notifies Beijing ahead of a mission.

"However, the Philippines may not use this as an excuse to transport materials of construction to its naval vessels in an attempt to permanently occupy Ren'ai Jiao," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said in a briefing.

China refers to the Second Thomas Shoal as Ren'ai Jiao.

Philippines president calls new China coast guard rules 'worrisome'

Tarriela said the Chinese coast guard "engaged in dangerous manoeuvres and even intentionally rammed" a navy boat while it was transporting the sick personnel.

"What should have been a simple medical evacuation operation was subjected to harassment," Tarriela said.

Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner said on Tuesday the first attempt to transport the sick soldier to the western province of Palawan failed after they were blocked by the Chinese.

Another attempt was made the next day with the help of the Philippine coast guard and the soldier was successfully evacuated, Brawner said.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, a conduit for more than US$3 trillion in annual ship commerce, and has deployed hundreds of coast guard vessels as far as 1,000km off its mainland to police what it says is its jurisdiction .

The Philippines and China have sparred repeatedly over the past year near disputed features that fall in Manila's exclusive economic zone. China routinely accuses the Philippines of encroachment while Manila and its allies have condemned what they call aggression by Beijing.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague said China's claims had no legal basis, a decision Beijing has rejected.

Scientists have discovered a cause of inflammatory bowel disease. They said it's a 'holy grail' discovery that could transform treatments.

  • Researchers used genetic editing to uncover a pathway behind diseases like inflammatory bowel disorders.
  • They say existing drugs could be used to interrupt the inflammation process and help treat patients.
  • Understanding the role of "gene deserts" may offer insight for treating other autoimmune conditions.

Insider Today

Scientists have reported a major breakthrough in our understanding of inflammatory bowel disorder. It could lead to more effective treatments for conditions like Crohn's disease, a new study found.

Researchers from University College London and the Francis Crick Institute used genetic editing to find how specific genes could be cranking up inflammation in the cells.

The underlying pathway for inflammatory bowel disease had previously been poorly understood, making it difficult to find treatments.

The researchers found answers by exploring a " gene desert ," which is an area empty of protein-coding genes. This region was once thought to be unimportant but makes up as much as 25% of the human genome.

Within the gene desert, the researchers said they discovered a section of DNA termed an "enhancer," so-called because it can turn up the volume of other genes' expression.

The enhancer was active in specific immune cells called macrophages, the study said, previously known to be important for inflammatory bowel disorders. It also appeared to influence a gene called ETS2, a risk factor in IBD.

"Using genetics as a starting point, we've uncovered a pathway that appears to play a major role in IBD and other inflammatory diseases," James Lee, a clinical scientist at University College London, a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Free Hospital, and a senior author of the paper, told The Guardian .

Related stories

Plus, Lee said, an existing class of drugs may be able to halt the process and treat the disease. The discovery is a "holy grail" that offers major hope for a treatment, he told The Guardian.

"Excitingly, we've shown that this can be targeted therapeutically, and we're now working on how to ensure this approach is safe and effective for treating people in the future," Lee said in a press release.

Using this discovery to improve treatments

It's one thing to identify the root of a mysterious disease. It's another to put that knowledge into practice.

With the help of genetic editing, Lee's team was able to test the connection between the enhancer and IBD. It dialed up the ETS2 in macrophages in the lab, and sure enough, they saw inflammation similar to that seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, the study said.

That's important because it means that drugs could help interrupt the cycle to reduce inflammation and treat disease.

Previously, only a small percentage of drugs tested to treat conditions like inflammatory bowel disease were approved, in part because the causes were poorly understood.

Even better, the drugs needed to target this pathway might already be available: The researchers found a class of medications prescribed for other conditions helped "switch off" the culprit gene in both macrophages and gut samples from patients.

The next step in the research is fine-tuning how the drugs are delivered into the body to target specific cells and reduce side effects.

Conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn's disease affect around 1% of the US population, per the CDC , and there's no cure.

Understanding the biological pathways that underlie these diseases could also help researchers fight inflammatory conditions like autoimmune disorders, too.

"IBD and other autoimmune conditions are really complex, with multiple genetic and environmental risk factors, so to find one of the central pathways, and show how this can be switched off with an existing drug, is a massive step forward," Christina Stankey, a Ph.D. student at the Francis Crick Institute and first author of the paper, said in a press release.

The findings were published Wednesday in Nature .
