Tyne Zipwire announces August return with new thrills and bookings open now

A zipwire above the river Tyne is set to be a highlight of the summer as it prepares to reach fresh heights - with the help of a crane.

Local adventure company Jelly Legs will be back on quayside in August with another chance for daredevils to take a zipwire ride over the river. Over the past two years, its sell-out sessions set off from the Tyne Bridge towards the Newcastle bank but, with restoration work under way on the landmark, there's now to be a new starting point which is higher and seems guaranteed to send adrenaline levels rocketing.

Those who sign up to the Summer Sky Zip will be hoisted into the air from the quayside by a crane. From a height of 125ft - 38 metres, compared with previous years' 85ft - they then will zip around 240 metres over the river to the Gateshead side, reaching faster speeds of up to 30mph.

That lift in the crane basket is set to add to the fear factor but - if they can keep their eyes open - they will be able to take in unique views of the riverscape and Millennium Bridge on the ride down before they land in Gateshead 's Baltic Square. The Sky Zip, which is open to book now, will be running sessions between August 16 and September.

A spokesperson for Jelly Legs said of the attraction: "It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted but it is undoubtedly an experience of a lifetime!" Zip ride time slots are available between 9am and 7pm on Fridays to Sundays on the following dates: August 16-18; August 23-25 and August 30-September 1.

There's also to be an extra date on the Bank Holiday Monday, August 26. There are weight restrictions involved - those taking part must be between six and 16 stone - and people will be weighed upon arrival.

The zipwire is one of several attractions aimed at celebrating the summer season in Newcastle. Business improvement district company NE1 Ltd has announced a programme of upcoming events which will include a quayside motorbike race and free kayak lessons on the Tyne.
