Naval, Biliran Itinerary

Guess what? I am such a joiner for this trip. Did not look it up online again.

We came from cebu so our route will be – Cebu to Naval (obviously).

Day 0.5: En route to Naval, Biliran via Roble Shipping Lines

Day 1: biliran island tour (prepare to get wet).

ulan ulan falls

The trek to Recoletos falls is very hard. You need to risk your life in crossing the path. Please wear shoes with grip so that you won’t easily slide. Please be careful and don’t bring many things with you.

Day 2: Sambawan Island + Unexpected turn of events

Sambawan Island

As planned, we were supposed to go back to Cebu via Ormoc because a fastcraft is available but unexpectedly the tickets were sold out because an event happened that weekend. So, we hurriedly went to another city ( I am from Ormoc and I was supposed to show off my city to my friends but did not happen). We went to Baybay city to find boats that will depart that day and luckily, we did find one. It was one hell of a day and I thank God because we were still safe and got what we wanted. AMEN! Lesson learned again. Always buy ticket ahead of time.

Travel Guide: Biliran

travel agency in naval biliran philippines

I admit, I didn’t know what to expect before my trip to Biliran. This island province in Eastern Visayas wasn’t even on my radar of places to visit. Formerly a sub-province of Leyte, Biliran is one of the country’s newest provinces, having only become independent in 1992. Biliran is also apparently the fourth smallest province in the Philippines, after Batanes , Camiguin and Siquijor , and it has the same laid-back vibe. It’s compact enough to explore by motorcycle and you get coastal roads with amazing views.

sambawan-island-biliran-view-travelup

Biilran’s smaller islands have beautiful beaches and sandbars. Inland, there are natural attractions like waterfalls and mountains to hike. Locals are friendly and accommodations are generally affordable for backpackers. After canyoneering, island-hopping and motorcycling around Biliran for 3 days, I left really fulfilled with the raw beauty and general uncommercialized feel of the province. If you’re interested in visiting Biliran, here are some basics to help you plan your trip

Table of Contents

Were exactly is Biliran?

Biliran is an island province in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. It’s located less than a kilometer north of the island of Leyte. There’s a bridge that connects the province of Biliran to Leyte. Its capital is the town of Naval on the western coast of the island.

How to get to Biliran

There is no airport in Biliran province. For those coming from Manila, the nearest entry point is Tacloban in Leyte. From the Tacloban airport, ride a jeep to the downtown area, then ride a Grand Tours Van (P130) to Naval town proper. Travel time is about 2.5 hrs. Cebu Pacific flies from Manila and Cebu to Tacloban. Lowest year-round fares may be booked through www.cebupacificair.com or reservation hotlines (02)7020-888.

cebu pacific tacloban

Cebu is the nearest international airport. From Cebu City, fast crafts are available to Ormoc City in Leyte. Travel time is roughly 3 hours. From Ormoc, you can take a shuttle van directly to Naval. Travel time is about 1.5 hours.

Getting around

Public transportation is not that regular around Biliran. If you’re traveling alone, it’s best to hire a habal-habal (motorbike) driver to take you around. Most charge around P500 a day. Prices negotiable.

08-biliran-motorcycle-with-roof

It’s even better if you can drive a motorcycle so you can go around yourself. There aren’t a lot of commercial motorcycle rental shops, but you can talk to locals to rent their private units. In Naval, motorbikes and scooters for rent are available at Norkis, a motorcycle shop at the corner of Vicentillo St. and Sabenerio St.. Contact:  (053) 500 9487.  I was able to borrow a semi-automatic Honda Wave for P500/day from Talahid Beach Resort in Almeria, when I stayed there overnight and ended up having an awesome  Solo Ride in Biliran .  You can easily circle the whole island in a day. The circumferential road is fully paved and in very good condition, there’s zero traffic, and the scenery all around is really refreshing.

01-motorcycling-biliran-travelup

Biking in Biliran is also a good option. I didn’t see any bicycle rental shops around, but if you can borrow one or bring your own bike (even a folding bike), I imagine it would be very pleasant to spend the whole day just biking around the island.

Where to go / What to do in Biliran

1. go island-hopping to sambawan island*.

biliran-sambawan-island-travelup

One of the most iconic views of the whole province can be found in Sambawan Island, which you can visit on an island-hopping day tour or opt to camp out overnight. From Kawayan Municipality, you can charter a boat (maximum 10 people) to travel to Sambawan for day trips. Travel time is one hour. Once you get there, enjoy swimming, snorkeling and diving. Hike up to the top of a hill to get the best view of two sides of the island, including facing Maripipi Island.

sambawan-island-biilran-group-shot

2. Try Canyoning / canyoneering at Sampao River*

For an extreme canyoneering experience, Biliran offers pristine natural rivers and gorges in Sampao River in Barangay Sampao, Almeria. Canyoning in Biliran involves a two-hour hike to reach the jump-off point where you start rappelling, sliding and jumping downstream passing 15 waterfalls.

This ends when you rappel down the majestic Ulan-Ulan Falls, which is estimated to be over 100 feet high. This is the most extreme and exhilarating canyoneering experience I’ve tried in the country so far. I’ll be writing more about this awesome experience in detail soon.

canyoning-in-biliran-ulan-ulan-falls-travelup

2. Hike to Ulan-Ulan Falls

If you don’t have time to try canyoneering, you can also just hike to Ulan-Ulan Falls, as it’s one of the province’s tallest and most beautiful waterfalls.

ulan-ulan-falls-biliran-travelup

3. Visit other waterfalls

Tinago Falls is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the province, reachable by motorized vehicle on the cross country road that cuts across from Naval to Caibiran, on the eastern side of the island. It’s a nice place, but a bit developed for tourists and locals. There’s a rather large and unsightly grandstand-like structure on the side of the falls that caters to tourists.

21-biliran-tinago-falls

We got to canyon downstream more than 15 falls, but there are many others located in different parts of the island including Tomalistis Falls in Caibiran, Kasabangan Falls in Cabucgayan and Bagongbong Falls in Caucab.

waterfalls-biliran-travelup

4. Marvel at the Iyusan Rice Terraces

In some of the mountainous and hilly areas of Biliran, you can find scenic rice terraces, man-made agricultural areas. the Iyusan Rice Terraces is located in Sitio Barubohan, Barangay Iyusan, Almeria, Biliran, about 20 minutes by land transport from Naval.

rice-terraces-almeria-biliran

5. Visit Canaan Hill Farms

Canaan Hill Farms in Brgy. Uson, Caibiran is a farm resort ideal for sightseeing, photography, picnics, camping and the like. You can walk through sheep and chicken farms, fruit trees, herb gardens and buy natural farm products here, take tractor rides, and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables. They also serve snack packages and set meals.

12-canaan-hill-farms-biliran-restaurant

  6. Relax in a pool resort

There are several family-friendly resorts and pools around the island for those looking for a place for group bonding, videoke and swimming including Masagongsong Swimming Pool and Estrellers Sunset View Spring Pool, which has pools fed by mountain fresh spring water. Entrance fee for Estreller’s is P25/adult and P10/chidren, tables for rent: P50, Cottages: P150-200. Night swimming from 5-8pm for an additional P10/head.

estrellers-spring-resort-biliran-pool

7. Take a dip at Mainit Hot Springs

One of the more popular swimming areas for locals in Caibiran is Mainit Hot Spring in Barangay Villa Vicenta. The spring has a man made pool basin and the area is known for having mineral rich waters that are believed to treat a wide array of ailments. It can get crowded though.

18-biliran-mainit-spring

8. Enjoy the view at Bethany Hills

Located in a hilly portion of the province overlooking the Biliran Strait, Bethany Hills Weluisa Farm is an events venue for birthdays, weddings and parties. They usually do catering services for events, but also serve short orders and Filipino fare like pancit and sandwiches for walk-in visitors. We visited here at night, so I don’t have any decent photos, but I was told that place offers a very scenic view of islets and part of mainland Leyte. It’s best to visit early morning (6-7am) or late afternoon (3-6pm) so you can catch the sunset.

9. Relax at Agta Beach

Another great place to watch the sunset is Agta Beach, a small and quiet beachfront area in Almeria with several resorts along the shore.

28-biliran-sunset-boat-talahid-beach-resort

10. Other attractions

From Agta Beach, you can take a 15-minute boat ride to Dalutan Island, which is right across the shore. If you have more time (1 day each minimum), you can also visit the main Maripipi Island or Higatangan Island , which is known for its shifting sandbar and rock formations.

What / Where to Eat in Biliran

I didn’t really get to explore Naval , where most of the restaurants are. There didn’t seem to be a lot of places to eat the rest of the island when I was riding around. but there are a few small eateries scattered around serving Filipino food. The lechon manok , which we had for our picnic lunch during our canyoneering trip, is a local specialty.

biliran-lechon-manok-picnic-lunch-canyoning

Agta Beach Resort (right next to Talahid where I was staying) serves basic tapsilog meals, short orders and vegetarian specials costing P120-150 per meal.

agta-beach-resort-biliran-menu

One of the best places I ate in Biliran was Canaan Farm Hills, which serves healthy snack packages and set meals. I really liked the organic burger, cassava chips and halo-halo, which cost P185 for all three, entrance fee included. Set meals (good for 2-4 persons) include dishes like Bisaya-style manok tinola, pinakbet, tortang talong and local delicacies like puto and bibingka. They also have interesting drinks like turmeric-ginger tarragon juice, camote tops with lemon grass and calamansi juice.

Tour Operator: Biliran Outdoor Shop

My trip was made possible by Joni Bonifacio, who runs Trexplore the Adventure and manages Biliran Outdoor Shop and Samar Outdoor Shop. For canyoneering, island-hopping tours and other activities around the province, I recommend you get in touch with his group .

Hi Justin, looks like I missed it. Just watched a video featuring Saob Falls. Sayang nga, but ok lang, that means I have a reason to go back to Biliran! 🙂

Thanks! Sama ako when you guys go back! Let’s coordinate skeds 🙂 Hehe. Aside from Saob Falls, I want to visit Higatangan Island and Maripipi Island!

Thank you for this very informative travel guide of yours, Ms. Kara. My boyfriend and I will go there this October. Sana mapuntahan namin lahat ng pinuntahan mo.:)

You’re welcome. Glad you found it helpful. Enjoy your trip to Biliran! 🙂

Hi Miss Kara,

We will going there by November 17-18 were planning on a daytrip to the whole or part of Biliran and Almera beach area is where we’ll leave our stuff and get back to it by the afternoon to wash up and proceed back to Naval for a night trip to Tacloban? Are there transportations from Almera at around 5-6pm? Are there vans in Naval bound for Tacloban by 8pm or up? I hope you can suggest any contacts? Thank you in advance for your reply, we need help for out trip.

Hi Krystle, I suggest you rent a room at Talahid beach resort in Almeria so you can leave your stuff and wash up there. I took a habal-habal from Almeria to get back to Naval and ride a van going to Tacloban. There are jeepneys that sometimes pass along the highway. There are buses and vans that depart from Biliran to Tacloban regularly but I don’t know what time the last trip is. Sometimes you have to wait for the vans to get filled up before it leaves so there’s no fixed sked. My only contact there is Biliran Outdoor Shop along Vicentillo Street, Naval, Biliran, Philippines. Contact numbers: 0919-2943865 / 09276750062.

Hi Ms. Kara! How much a canyoneering with rappelling? Solo traveler po kasi ako. Going to Biliran from Cebu City on February 2, 2018. I am planning to spend 3days and 2 nights there then back to Cebu.

Hi Daphne. Extreme Canyoning in Biliran costs P3,500 per person. I wrote more about this adventure here .

Good day Ms. Cara, Can you suggest tourist spots to go for a day? starting point is Naval. We just planned to rent a motorcycle. Is it possible yo visit Ulan ulan falls and tinago falls in one day? and maybe some sidetrips along the way?

Hi Dodong, please check this map : Kaya naman in one day if you start early, but Ulan-Ulan Falls requires hiking to get to. If you want madali lang na reachable by motorcycle lahat, start by taking cross-country road to Tinago Falls, then go to Canaan Hill Farms after for lunch. There are other falls you can stop by din. Agta Beach Resort is nice for sunset. You can read my other post: Solo Ride in Biliran .

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Formerly a sub-province of Leyte , Biliran is one of the country’s newest provinces.  It is also the fourth smallest province in the Philippines.  Biliran is connected to Leyte Island by a 150-meter bridge over a short and narrow channel which is around 40 meters wide during low tide.  Much like Leyte and Samar, the island province of Biliran is blessed with several natural attractions particularly waterfalls, hot springs, mountains, and beaches.

Biliran Island Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Biliran Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Biliran Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while on Biliran Island.

1 | Explore the waterfalls

Do you know that there are at least 10 identified waterfalls in Biliran?  One of the most popular waterfalls on the island is Kasabangan Falls, found at Kasabangan Falls Leisure Park.  It has 13 cascades and one of them has a height of 20 meters.  Considering its popularity, the government constructed a covered concrete viewing deck in the area.  Another waterfall on the island is Tomalistis Falls.  It is fast-becoming a popular tourist attraction due to the exquisite taste of its water.  It is dubbed as the source of the sweetest water in the world.  Like Kasabangan Falls, it has been developed to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.  If you want a more challenging activity, consider Ulan-Ulan Falls in the town of Sampao.  It is hidden in a lush forest and requires about a 30-minute trek along a river and mountain.  Ulan is the local term for rain and it is the best term to describe the waterfall.  The force from the falling waters creates a mist that feels like rain.  Other equally interesting waterfalls to visit are Recoletos Falls, Saob Falls, Bagongbong Falls, and Casiawan Falls.

2 | Enjoy the hot springs

Biliran is a volcano island and its formation is caused by volcanoes.  There are around 15 volcanoes on the island and most of them are inactive.  As such, mud pools, thermal areas, and hot springs can be found on the island.  In Libtong thermal areas in Central Biliran, there are 12 hot springs and one bubbling pool.  Bathing is not possible so the only activity to do is sightseeing.  Mainit Hot Spring, on the other hand, is more tourist-friendly as it has an open cottage, a makeshift dressing room , and man-made basin where people may sit to enjoy the warm water believed to have therapeutic effects.

3 | Hike Mt. Tres Marias

One of the mountains you can hike in Biliran is Mt. Tres Marias, an unspoilt mountain with three peaks where it got its name from.  With the highest peak at 1,315 masl, Mt. Tres Marias is blessed with streams and mossy forest as well as interesting flora and fauna.  Before reaching the peak, you will also pass by numerous waterfalls including Ulan-Ulan Falls, Recoletos Falls, and Nomad Falls.  Mt. Tres Marias is a major climb and takes 6 to 7 hours to reach the summit.

4 | See the rice terraces

There are several rice terraces in Biliran and two of them are found near each other – the Sampao Rice Terraces and Iyusan Rice Terraces.  They may not be as grand as the rice terraces in Banaue but they are still worth seeing.

5 | Take a glimpse of Biliran’s past at Nasunugan Ruins

Located on a hilltop, Nasunugan Ruins is a reconstruction of the original watchtower that was burned to the ground by Moros in 1774.  The blocks of corals and stones left after the fire were used for the reconstruction in 2000.  Stairs and railings were also added to make it more accessible to tourists.

6 | Enjoy the beaches

Like most islands in the Philippines, Biliran is blessed with a long stretch of beaches great for swimming and beach-bumming.  Beaches in Almeria, particularly Talahid Beach, have coralline shoreline, clear water, and picturesque sunset.  There are a few resorts that provide water activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, scuba diving, and snorkeling.

7 | Nearby destinations

Several smaller yet stunning islands surround Biliran.  One is Maripipi Island which is dubbed as “The Isle of Gems” as it has become popular for its white biogenic sand and crystal clear water.  A few kilometers from Maripipi Island is Sambawan Island and a little further away is Dalutan Islands, both known for their rich marine life which attracts divers and non-divers alike.  Higatangan Island, on the other hand, attracts tourists with its white sandbar that shifts direction every few months depending on the waves.

NOTE: The Hudyaka Festival occurs annually in Biliran Island every 11th of May.

Klook

EAT & DRINK

The following is your guide to the flavorful food to enjoy and restaurants to try while on Biliran Island.

1 | Jelo’s Place

The most popular eatery on the island, Jelo’s Place serves various Filipino dishes such as sinigang and bulalo as well as other favorites like sandwiches, burgers, and pasta.  They also have a good selection of drinks and their desserts, particularly their signature mousse cake and green tea cake, are the best in the area.

2 | D’ Adaone Bar and Restaurant

Located at D’Mei Residence Naval, D’Adaone is a great place to dine, have drinks, and be entertained by a live band during weekends.  It offers Western and Asian dishes to accommodate the growing tourists of the island.

CoCos in Naval offers beautiful views of the sunset and Leyte Island on top of serving great foods and drinks.  It has a good ambience and friendly staff making your time there a satisfying one.

4 | El Pomar Bistro Cafe

El Pomar and Bistro Cafe is a nice restaurant serving tasty dishes at reasonable prices.  It is an ancestral house converted into a restaurant with a cozy ambience.  Try their cheese tofu, squid roll, and tempura.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

Typical Costs on Biliran Island in 2023 :

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Biliran Island.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Biliran Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Biliran Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Biliran Itinerary: Beach Bumming in Sambawan Island and Waterfall Chasing in Biliran

Biliran

Bring with you your love for the tropical island life and your undying sense of adventure and make your way to the island province of Biliran, one of the pride of Eastern Visayas.

With numerous islands and islets that make up the province, Biliran boasts of pristine white sand islands and beaches that lie on its vivid and bountiful water, as well as beautiful rice terraces and waterfalls that are tucked on its mountainous and volcanic terrains. It used to be under the jurisdiction of the Province of Leyte until it was separated in 1992 to form an independent local government composed of eight municipalities.

Sambawan Island

The province is composed of two major islands – Biliran and Maripipi – both are made up of potentially active volcanoes, smaller islands and islets surround the two including the famed Sambawan Island.

Biliran is among the smallest provinces in the country, fourth smallest to be exact, and yet it is overflowing with natural wonders. Explore and experience what the province has to offer, check out my three days and two nights itinerary, trip expenses and other tips to help you plan your trip.

Things to do and see in Biliran

Sambawan island adventure.

Sambawan Island Photos by Bong Fahigal via Facebook

Sambawan Island is one of the islets that makeup Biliran. It’s an uninhabited island at the western part of Marpipi. Its beauty is unique due to its appearance of small landmasses abundant with green grass, some rocky terrain, and white sand beach. The water is turquoise in color and the whole island is quiet.

There are outrigger boats in Brgy. Ol-og going to Sambawan and it will cost about Php600 for 6 persons for a round trip. It’s possible to go pitch a tent on the island. Read our Sambawan Island Travel Guide for complete details.

Visit Iyusan Rice Terraces in Almeria

Like the Ifugao Rice Terraces, Iyusan is also a man-made structure made by gifted hands in Almeria to boost the productivity of the local farmers. It’s an agricultural wonder and a sight where you can take lots of photos for its lush and green scenery.

Visit Candol Cove Beach

This beach is one of the white sand beaches of Marpipi, Biliran. It features azure waters and rich marine life in the surrounding areas so it’s best to snorkel in the vicinity. There are several cottages that tourists can rent and the area can provide much-needed chill time for visitors.

Discover Acaban Cave

Swim your way to this cave which opens to the sea and enjoy a few meters of loveliness. There’s a small spring inside said to be a source of healthy drink for locals. The cave is located in Brgy. Acaban. It’s a thirty-minute ride from Naval. The only accessible part of the cave is a 20ft opening. The caretaker narrated that there’s a treasure hunter once who bombed the cave to find treasures.

Trek to Bagongbong Falls

Bagongbong Falls features a narrow strip of waterfalls that has been sandwiched by towering rock formations in earthy red. It is reachable in 15 minutes via a forested area. Its water is crystal clear and cold and some say that it looks like a cathedral. The falls is located in Brgy. Caucab, Almeria town.

Visit Padre Gaspar Pilgrimage Site

Padre Gaspar Pilgrimage Site photo via Biliran.gov.ph

Legend has it that Father Gaspar leads the settlers to this place when their group is trying to run from Moro pirates. He was looking for a safe place where there is a water source. He then pushed his holy cane to the soil and whispered some Latin words that plead ‘be the origin of water’. After that, water surfaced. The place is now called Padre Gaspar Pilgrimage Site which many pilgrims go to every Monday. The spring of water is responsible for supplying Brgy. Hugpa.

Chill at Canaan Hill and Honey Farm

Marvel at Nasunugan Watch Tower Ruins

Nasunugan Watch Tower Ruins photo via Biliran.gov.ph

The Watch Tower was used between 1765-1774 but there was a time when the settlement was attacked so the only things remaining were a block of stones and corals. In the year 2000, the place was reconstructed using what remains of the old structure and this is what will greet tourists when they visit. It’s only 5-10 minutes away from Biliran town proper and it’s also the place that the locals say Fr. Gaspar had a fort built to serve as a sanctuary for the Biliranons.

Visit Biliran Mini Zoo

The mini-zoo is privately-owned but it’s open to visitors. You’ll find several animals inside like a lion, different species of birds and a ‘liger’ amongst others. It’s exciting to meet this kind of hybrid from a lion and tigress as its kind is rare.

Go to Higatangan Sandbar

Higatangan Island photo by Biliran.gov.ph

This island features stretches of white sand beaches. It also has several interesting-looking rock formations. The island is rich with stories about pirates and ships. There is a 200-meter white sandbar that resembles the shape of a tongue. Some old folks say that some of the accidents that happened which claimed the lives of some people are because of the supernatural beings or gods. Whatever the reason, it is such a beautiful place and just being careful when there is a sudden gush of wind or big wave should be done to prevent untoward incidents.

Tour Naravil MFA Boardwalk

Offering a much-needed respite from the chaos of the city, the Boardwalk is where you can walk through and see a mangrove forest. It’s located in Barangay Looc, Cabucgayan. The place is rich in land and sea resources and it’s possible to take a hike or a dip in the sea. Aside from walking through the boardwalk, there are many activities to do in the vicinity like kayaking, snorkeling, island hopping and bird watching. They also offer catering services.

Relax at San Bernardo Spring Pool

San Bernardo Spring Pool photo via Biliran.gov.ph

If a spring pool, shaded trees and the sounds of chirping birds is good enough for you then you must visit San Bernardo Spring Pool. There is much to see but the pool gets its water from a nearby spring and it’s a good place to relax with friends. There are many large trees that keep the area a bit cooler. You can also bring some foods with you as you spend a couple of hours enjoying the weather of Biliran.
