Banner elk winery & villa.

Our first choice for winery accommodation is certainly Banner Elk Winery & Villa . This Tuscan-inspired property comes complete with 8 suites that have either king or queen-sized beds. 2 of the suites have fireplaces. The entire villa is also available to rent for larger groups, and the minimum stay requirement is 3 days if you choose to rent the entire home. While relaxing here, you’ll be just 200 yards from the winery and vineyards, set within a beautiful valley and mountain backdrop.

Banner Elk produces a variety of dry red, white and sweet sangria-style wines. Our readers frequently rave about the outdoor patio and live music on the property. The winery is also somewhat family-friendly, so kids can roam and play on the grounds while parents sit back and sip on the patio.

Elkin Creek Vineyard & Cabins

For a delightful respite away from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities, consider a visit to incredibly quaint Elkin Creek Vineyards . This boutique 4-cabin retreat crafts a number of delicious white and red wines. On Sundays, they serve some truly delicious brick oven pizza to guests. Cabins are available with porch swings and fireplaces tucked into the woods by the creek. Visitors can choose to spend a night or weekend on the property. The staff and the ambiance enhance the experience 10-fold at Elkin. If you choose to stay here, you’ll likely come back again and again. 

Hampton Inn & Suites Shelton Vineyards

This isn’t just any Hampton Inn & Suites , this is a very special property operated in conjunction with nearby Shelton Vineyards . Located within the town of Dobson and close to Mount Airy, it’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking to explore Yadkin Valley’s wine country. Both Shelton Vineyards and Round Peak Vineyards are within a 15-minute drive of the hotel, and a shuttle bus offers transport between Shelton Vineyards proper.

The rooms are spacious, clean and vibrant, and the hotel itself has its very own wine bar downstairs. There’s a large area both inside and outside to lounge and sip wine. When it’s time for lunch or dinner, hop on the shuttle to Shelton and be sure to dine at the incredibly delicious Harvest Grill .

Klondike Cabins

For an authentic log cabin vibe located on the Grassy Creek Winery property, Klondike is a perfect choice. It’s situated in the Yadkin Valley and very close to the aforementioned Elkin Creek Vineyards, so the location is great for those looking to see the region. If antiques and historic artwork are your thing, expect those flavors in each of the 3 cabins available at Klondike. The main cabin is large, with 4 bedrooms, a kitchen, entertainment and dining areas that can fit up to 50 people. There’s also a covered porch that overlooks the lake. There are two smaller cabins nearby as well. Each cabin can be rented individually or by a group. 

TreeHouse Vineyards

Who doesn’t want to stay in a treehouse? Here at Winetraveler, we jump at every opportunity, especially when that treehouse overlooks a vineyard. At TreeHouse Vineyards , you have 3 options to consider. Each offers the customer a different experience. For example, the rustic “Date Night” treehouse sits 30ft up in the air and offers views of the vineyard from the porch. “Papa’s Dream” offers similar views, a deck with a grill and queen-sized bed. Horsefeathers Hideaway is a much more spacious treehouse that’s tucked into the woods near a creek. It features a 400 square foot deck and a modern design that can fit up to 8 people.

Slightly Askew Winery

Slightly Askew Winery offers a cozy vacation home on their property in Elkin that’s within 5 miles of several top wineries and breweries. If you don’t feel like traveling, you can just head over to the winery on the property, relax on the patio and order by the flight, glass or bottle. Slightly Askew has a loyal fan base and many customers rave about their wines, especially their sweet wines. However, they do offer a range of dry wines suitable for almost every palate.

Olde Farmhouse at Carolina Heritage Vineyard

For a quaint, quiet, and boutique vineyard stay, definitely consider the top-rated Olde Farmhouse at Carolina Heritage Vineyard . Here, you have the opportunity to stay in a farmhouse that was first constructed in 1928. It was recently renovated in 2018 and features a 2-bedroom 1-bath setup right next to the winery. Relax on the porch around sunset with vineyard views and the Blue Ridge Mountains off in the distance.

All of their wines are organic, small-craft and top-notch. We personally highly recommend trying the Cabernet Franc ! The tasting room is warm and inviting as are the staff. We seriously have yet to see a bad review of Carolina Heritage.

Round Peak Vineyards

Round Peak is conveniently located off the main road I-77 and is within distance of other popular and beautiful wineries like Shelton Vineyards. Visitors frequent Round Peak to relax on the patio by the fire pit and digest epic vineyard and mountain views. The wine here is sure to accommodate most palates, with a range of reds, whites and dessert wines. They even make grape-infused beers branded under the Skull Cap label.

One of our favorite aspects of Round Peak has to be their disc golf course. It’s completely free to play and perfect for the whole family. 

There are two cabins available on the property, the Winery Cabin and the Vineyard Cabin . Both include free tastings if you rent them out. The cabins are both dog-friendly and have porches overlooking the nearby vineyard.

Stony Knoll Vineyards

For a cute and rustic cabin experience, consider staying at Stony Knoll Vineyards . The original cabin was built in the 1800s and was recently refurbished in 2007, but they were able to maintain much of the original classic nuances of the structure. The cabin features a king, double and single bed along with a full kitchen.

Regardless of whether you stay at Stony Knoll or not, you should definitely stop by to see the vineyard and taste the wine. Stony Knoll is known for its enthusiastic and warm staff, small bites and a great selection of wines. The vineyard itself is also beautiful to look at while relaxing on the patio.

Wineries With Beautiful Views

Raylen vineyards.

100+ acres of vineyards, friendly staff and wine slushies are waiting for you at RayLen . This is one of those wineries in North Carolina that just has it all. Conveniently located near Winston-Salem and accessible from cities like Charlotte and Greensboro, RayLen notes that you don’t need to travel deep into the mountains to find great wine. They craft a range of reds, whites and even a rosé of Cabernet Franc. When it comes to visiting, both tastings and tours are offered. Depending on the day of your visit, you may be greeted with live music on the patio accompanied by local food trucks. 

Jones von Drehle Vineyards & Winery

This winery was founded by Diana & Chuck Jones and Ronnie & Raymond von Drehle in 2007. An estate winery, every drop of wine in your glass was farmed from grapes grown on the property. It’s also non-mechanized for the most part, with harvest and sorting being done completely by hand.

Jones von Drehle is an upscale winery experience with a beautiful, high-ceiling tasting room and expansive outdoor deck. They’re also in the process of building a concert venue on the property, which everyone here at Winetraveler is looking forward to.

Haze Gray Vineyards

This recently established winery crafts a number of delicious wines, especially their Chardonnay , Merlot and even a Chambourcin ! Friendly husband and wife team Becky and Dean have constructed a lovely tasting room with an inviting and modern ambiance inside, and a lovely porch outside looking down over the sloping vineyard. In case you’re visiting on a hot day, this is another winery that offers some delicious wine slushies to customers.

A couple of little-known facts about Haze Gray Vineyards : the founders both come from military backgrounds, and there’s also a guest cottage on the property we highly recommend crashing at if available. Be sure to ask about it and tell them we sent you!

Grassy Creek Vineyards

Grassy Creek Vineyards is considered to be somewhat of a hidden gem in NC’s wine country. They produce top-quality wines, and one of our personal favorites is their unoaked Chardonnay . It’s also a convenient winery to stop at if you’re looking for small bites, including an assortment of cheeses, crackers and charcuterie. There is plenty of outdoor seating, periodic live music, and the winery is dog-friendly.

One little insider visitor strategy we recommend is to go hiking to nearby Carter Falls and the “enchanted pine forest” from the winery. Relax later with a bottle of wine and take in some vineyard views. As we mentioned earlier, this property also features lodging at their Klondike Cabins, making for an ideal full-day and night experience.

Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery

For a taste of Tuscany right here in North Carolina, definitely make a stop at Raffaldini Vineyards just outside of Elkin. The grounds here are beautiful, the tasting room and main building is gorgeously designed to mimic a Tuscan villa, and there’s a large outdoor (and covered) patio for you to enjoy a flight, glass or bottle of wine surrounded by the vines. There is also a walking path through the gardens that is impressively scenic, and you can walk the grounds with a glass of wine in hand.

Upscale Wineries With Restaurants

Childress Vineyards

For a trip to a stunning property and winemaking operation, consider a tasting experience at Childress Vineyards . Owned by Richard Childress who happens to be a former NASCAR driver, the winery is a destination in and of itself, offering a great selection of whites, reds and dessert-style wines crafted by winemaker Mark Friszolowski. There’s also a bistro on the property that serves lunch from 10AM-4PM, a beautiful patio setting overlooking the vines, shopping inside the winery and opportunities to book special events and tours.

Shelton Vineyards

This 1,000-acre estate is a hallmark for wine in the Yadkin Valley. Another elegant and up-scale property, this is the place to come for a luxury experience walking the grounds or dining at the legendary Harvest Grill. You’ll be greeted with sweeping vineyard views as you approach Shelton, set in front of a mountain backdrop. Both tours and a wide range of tastings are offered here, and as we mentioned before, a shuttle runs from the Hampton Inn & Suites so you can stay nearby and avoid driving. 

Shelton Vineyards produces a wide range of red, white, rosés and sweet wines that will accommodate almost any visitor. The Tannat , dry rosé and Cabernet Franc are some of our favorites.

JOLO Winery and Vineyards

For beautiful scenery and a fine dining experience, look no further than JOLO Winery and Vineyards . The venue itself is gorgeously constructed, and you’ll find yourself in awe just gazing across the property and up at Pilot Mountain. The restaurant here has been rated as one of the best 100 brunch restaurants by OpenTable and one of the top 7 wineries outside of California. We had the opportunity to dine and drink here, and we concur. Try the truffle fries and scallops over risotto and pair it with their Golden Hallows white wine blend.

The Biltmore Estate

Easily the most famous estate in North Carolina, this property offers an almost endless range of wine experiences, tours and dining opportunities. The Estate boasts 5 restaurants and 3 different lodging options, each tailored to different budgets, travel preferences and tastes. The Biltmore “experience,” as we like to call it, comes complete with dozens of variations of wine tastings, hiking trail opportunities, archery, a museum, gardens and grounds, kid-friendly activities, and even a spa. While it may be considered the most touristy thing to do in NC, we think it’s worth a visit.

Boutique & Unique Wineries

As Winetraveler Contributor Sarah Phillips notes , arriving at Stone Ashe evokes a sense of ambition based on the way they decided to structure their vineyard. If French grape varieties are your jam, you won’t be disappointed in visiting Stone Ashe. The vineyard setting is gorgeous, tucked away between the mountains near Hendersonville. The tasting room feels brand new and modern yet still somehow gives off a rustic vibe. Definitely try the flights offered here, and pay special attention to the reds. Choose your favorite, buy a glass (or a bottle) and relax in one of the Adirondack chairs or walk amongst the vines.

McRitchie Winery & Ciderworks

Another Yadkin Valley winery, McRitchie is certainly more on the boutique side and is family-owned and operated. Their main focuses are small lot wine production and hard ciders. The staff here are known for being friendly, and the views tucked away within Stone Mountain aren’t too shabby either. We also highly recommend trying their cheese plate which and pairing it with your favorite red.

Marked Tree

Closer to Asheville and in Hendersonville, a visit to Marked Tree is worth a stop to try some high-quality European varietals crafted right here in North Carolina. Definitely try the Gruner Veltliner on the white side and the Cabernet Franc for a red. This is also an ideal winery if you’re looking for small plates and cheese boards. Dishes range from Sunburst Smoked Trout plates, Roots Hummus plates, Delicious Mother Noble Pimento cheese with veggies plates and Ghost House Truffles.

Like most of the wineries we’ve mentioned on this list, Marked Tree is also known for its beautiful views. Gaze across acres of vineyards and distant mountain peaks at elevation from the tasting room.

If you’re staying in or near Asheville, you can visit their urban tasting room dubbed “The Grape” downtown.

Plēb Urban Winery

For an urban and hipster experience if you’re getting tired of NC’s remarkable countryside, be sure to stop by Plēb Urban Winery in Asheville. Natural, curious and adventurous wine lovers will appreciate Plēb, and they are constantly experimenting with over 26 grape varieties, including varieties with names like Maréchal Foch which we haven’t even heard of. You can also order cheese plates and delicious charcuterie boards when you stop here.

North Carolina is the home of America’s first grape , and there’s nothing quite like tasting wine where it was made. With about  250 wineries and vineyards across North Carolina, you can map your way through wine trails and savor every stop. Here are some of the many wine experiences you'll be enticed to plan a trip around.

1 Overjoyed and Overnight

The enjoyment doesn’t stop when the tasting room closes. An increasing number of wineries offer overnight accommodations to extend the great grape experience. Banner Elk Winery & Villa , in the mountains, offers some of the largest suites with incredible views and Jacuzzi tubs. And Treehouse Vineyards  in Monroe, near Charlotte, provides a unique wine getaway experience from a treetop.

2 ’Cue the Vino

Ask someone what to eat during your visit to North Carolina, and the response will likely be barbecue. Pitmasters have perfected different ways of cooking, flavoring and serving up the ’cue, but you won’t find a place where it’s taken more seriously than in Lexington . Located in the central region of our state, this city has its own style of barbecue, the aptly named Lexington-style. But a tasty trip here wouldn’t be complete without tasting wines along the Southern Gateway Wine Trail . Childress Vineyards , founded by NASCAR legend Richard Childress, features award-winning wines, a large tasting room, restaurant and gift shop.

3 Wine Peaks in the Valley

The Yadkin Valley area is one of the most prominent wine regions you’ll find on the East Coast. While the valley is home to more than 40 vineyards and wineries, you can plan your trip by focusing on the dozen or so that stretch across the charming, neighboring towns of Elkin, Pilot Mountain, Dobson and Mount Airy. Fun fact: Mount Airy was made famous as the inspiration for the town of Mayberry on "The Andy Griffith Show." If visiting in winter, pick up a Yadkin Valley Winter Wine & Beer Passport , which includes tastings at 12 wineries and four craft breweries, discounts at local restaurants and more.

4 Tastes of the World

If a weekend getaway – or even day trip – is on your horizon, set your sights on a smaller section of Yadkin Valley. The Swan Creek Wine Trail offers you five vineyards, all within close proximity of one another. These wineries specialize in varietal wines and blends – including a strawberry "shortcake" wine at Shadow Springs Vineyard – but each maintains its own atmosphere and winemaking approach.

5 Hanging with Furry Friends

The llamas at Divine Llama Vineyards , home to the largest llama farm in the Southeast, make excellent companions when it comes to enjoying an award-winning glass of wine at a one-of-kind, kid-friendly winery. Stop by the tasting room located in a rustic farmhouse about a half hour northeast of Winston-Salem , pick your favorite vintage and take a short stroll to the llamas, who are perfect for photo ops and inducing laughs. On weekends in the spring, fall and winter, you can even take a trek like none other when you make a llama friend and head out for a 2-mile walk over rolling hills along Miller Creek – just be sure to make your reservations ahead of time. And if you’d rather stay back and relax on the patio, the llamas will make their way over to you on the weekends.

6 Toast to the Coast

On the opposite end of our state, near the coast , is Duplin Winery in Rose Hill. Duplin has the largest wine production facility on the East Coast, so visitors from around the country are often familiar, having bought bottles of the popular Carolina Red, Hatteras Red, Magnolia and Scuppernong labels from their local wine stores. Spend an afternoon or evening here, enjoy tastings and a tour, food from the bistro and live music.

7 A Grand Tour

Head to the NC mountains and be prepared to encounter breathtaking views. Spend time in Asheville , where you’ll want to visit  Biltmore , the largest private home in America. The estate also features Biltmore Winery , the country’s most-visited winery, where a tour of the massive cellar takes you underground.

You don't have to fly five hours and spend thousands of dollars to experience fine wines and scenic vineyards. The Yadkin Valley lies in the Piedmont and Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Experts in the disciplines of Viticulture and Enology have compared this area to France’s Burgundy and Italy’s Piedmont.

Our goal is to provide a complete touring experience of the Wineries & Vineyards in the Yadkin Valley and beyond, which is both fun and educational. Our public tours are offered on Saturdays, year-round. (subject to changes when circumstances arise).

Yadkin Valley Wine Tours was created out of love and desire. The love of good wine, and the desire to share this love.

Yadkin Valley Wine Tours was formed in 2002.  John W. Byrd, a retired financial investment consultant located in Lewisville NC, took over as owner in September, 2005.  John is a long time corporate member of the American Wine Society who served on their Strategic Planning committee. He also helped charter the Lewisville Wine Society. John has served as the Past President of the Lewisville Historical Society, Past Chairman of the Lewisville Clemmons Chamber of Commerce and a Tourism Partner with Visit Charlotte, Visit Charlotte and Visit Surry.

John received his wine judge certification in 2008 and actively judged local wine contests from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina for five years.

Yadkin Valley Wine Tours has a primary goal to provide educational, fun wine tours to wine lovers from all over the world.

A day or weekend exploring the best North Carolina wine trails is a great way to spend time together. You can enjoy each other’s company while tasting delicious NC wines , admiring some of the most beautiful scenery our state offers. Here, we highlight the best North Carolina wine trails, featuring wineries in close proximity to each other which can be visited in a day or a weekend.

Each North Carolina winery offers something unique. Some wineries charge for wine tasting, while others do not. Some use plastic cups, and some glassware. The largest wine-growing region of the state lies in the Yadkin Valley, outside Winston-Salem, home to several wine trails. But they aren’t the only ones! Here are some of the best NC wine trails for you to explore:

Surry County Wine Trail

Located in the Yadkin Valley, the Surry County Wine Trail is the most densely populated of all the wine trails on this list with sixteen wineries in and around Dobson, Elkin, Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain, you will need multiple weekends to do the area justice.

Recommended Winery: The winery that pushed for Yadkin Valley to be North Carolina’s first American Viticultural Area in 2003, Shelton Vineyards . Started by two brothers, Shelton Vineyards is one of the largest vineyards on the East Coast and grows about ten kinds of grapes. Their property features a small lake and walking paths. The vineyard has its own restaurant, the Harvest Grill, winning USA Today Readers’ Choice award.

What to Try : Lots of award-winning wines to choose from here! Try the Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Port.

Where to Stay: The Hampton Inn & Suites at Shelton Vineyards , of course! It is the only hotel in the chain featuring a wine bar open nightly from 5 to 10 pm.

East Bend Wine Trail

The Yadkin Valley East Bend Wine Trail features wineries located along the Yadkin River, to the northwest of Winston-Salem. This trail includes five wineries that feature a llama farm, miniature horses, and an organic vegetable farm.

Recommended Winery: We couldn’t resist – Divine Llama Vineyards . A winery and the largest llama farm in the southeast combine for this unique experience. Book a weekend two-mile trek with your four-legged pal, stopping for photo ops along the way. Divine Llama offers eleven wines from four grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonel, and Traminette).

What to Try: With several award-winning wines in their collection, there are plenty of options to choose from. Sticking with the llama theme, try the Red Rita Rosé, a light, crisp wine with notes of strawberry and mandarin orange named after the matriarch of the llama herd.

Where to Stay: The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in Winston-Salem earns all the reviews. Recognized as one of the South’s best hotels by Southern Living , the building served as the architectural muse for the Empire State Building. Just make sure you’re back in time for the daily 5 pm wine hour. Or spend some time in the adult playground themed rec room featuring a slide, basketball, bowling alley, or ping pong. Plus you’ll be centrally located to enjoy all the city has to offer.

Swan Creek Wine Trail

Technically part of the Yadkin Valley, the Swan Creek Wine Trail loops about 31 miles about 35 minutes from Winston-Salem with six wineries, though four of them are within five miles of each other. Those on bicycles will want to try the Tour de Vino, a challenging ride along the rolling hills. Plus it’s only about an hour from Greensboro and Charlotte.

Recommended Winery: Find a piece of Italy in North Carolina at the Raffaldini Vineyards and Winery . Known for their Italian red wines, Raffaldini hosts a Festa Italiana every September. As you drive up to their main building, you’d think you were approaching a Tuscan villa. Their patio boasts beautiful views of beautiful mountains and vineyards.

What to Try: Pinot Grigio or Bella Misto (a red blend) – fans of Italian wines will feel transported to the Old Country.

Where to Stay: Frog Holler Cabins in Elkin. Return to one of five cabins with a hot tub or a fireplace after your wine trail exploration. Frog Holler even offers wine tours if you’d like to leave the driving to someone else, which can even accommodate groups of 12 in their van.

Shallow Ford Wine Trail

Twenty minutes west from Winston-Salem, four wineries can be found only minutes from each other. This historically important area during both the American and Civil War eras serves as the backdrop to the Shallow Ford Wine Trail.

Recommended Winery: Offering wine tours and tastings, Medaloni Cellars Winery & Vineyards also serves as a venue hosting events. Enjoy the sunset while watching the Blue Ridge mountains with a glass of your favorite Medaloni Cellars wine in your hand. Their fire pits and friendly atmosphere draw rave reviews.

What to Try: Chardonnay – all the whites are popular but the Chardonnay receives high praise.

Uwharrie Mountains Wine Trail

Located in Stanly County, on the way to Uwharrie National Forest, heading northeast from Charlotte, three wineries form the Uwharrie Mountains Wine Trail. The vineyards here grow a mix of grapes, from the local muscadine to the traditional European varieties.

Recommended Winery: Family owned Dennis Vineyards uses the muscadine, the traditional native southern grape, to create a variety of wines of varying sweetness levels. As one of the oldest vineyards in the state, their experience has broadened their flavors to include fruity and French varieties. This winery is best for lovers of sweet wines. Enjoy sitting on the large patio overlooking the rows of vines.

What to Try: Carlos Sweet, the grown-up version of eating sweet grapes fresh off the vine. Carlos is a smooth, light white muscadine.

Southern Gateway Wine Trail

Lexington, known for its Historic Barbecue Trail, claims the title of “Barbecue Capital of the World.” So the five wineries in Davidson County that form the Southern Gateway Wine Trail have shown that they too have earned international recognition.

Recommended Winery: NASCAR team owner Richard Childress’ signature vineyard and winery Childress Vineyards . Wine Enthusiast recognized Childress Vineyards as one of the top tasting rooms in America. The accolades continue with Open Table voting the onsite restaurant, Bistro, one of the Top 100 Scenic Restaurants in America. Their wines win awards, including twice having wines named to the 50 Best Wines of the World.

What to Try: Reserve Cabernet Franc or the Riesling. New for 2020, the vineyard offers both red and white Sangria!

Where to Stay: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Lexington NW – The Vineyard located directly next door to Childress Vineyards. Request a room overlooking the vineyards.

Tryon Foothills Wine Country Trail

The mountains of eastern Polk county protect the crops, offering the longest growing season in North Carolina. This isothermal belt at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountain range has been home to vineyards since 1890! There are five wineries welcoming visitors near Tryon and Columbus, close to the South Carolina border, forming the Tryon Foothills Wine Country Trail.

Recommended Winery: Overmountain Vineyards creating French-style wines in the North Carolina foothills. The owners’ Great Danes will welcome you to the vineyards. Sit on the front porch sipping on your glass of wine while enjoying views of the hills.

What to Try: Petit Manseng, a dry white, though the sangria is popular in the summer heat.

Where to Stay: 1906 Pine Crest Inn in Tryon is a magical find. The Inn is perfect for couples and not too far from Lake Lure and Greenville.

Catawba Valley Wine Trail

Near Lake James State Park, visitors can find three vineyards with wineries, located just a few miles off I-40 between Marion and Morganton in Burke County. The rich soil creates ideal growing conditions worth the stop to these wineries comprising the Catawba Valley Wine Trail .

Recommended Winery: Visit the Silver Fork Winery near Morganton, not far from I-40. Sit back on an Adirondack chair, enjoying live music, overlooking rolling hills. Fans of French wines will find their happy place here.

What to Try: Nonsense Red Blend, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Where to Stay: Voted the best inn in the NC mountains several years in a row, The Inn at Glen Alpine is a must-experience property. Use it as your base not only for the wine trail but also to explore the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. Hike the Linville Gorge and visit Linville Falls, perhaps the most photographed waterfall in North Carolina.

Haw River Valley Wine Trail

Perhaps the longest of the wine trails on the list at 50 miles, the Haw River Valley Wine Trail is the easternmost of the NC wine trails. Trailing the Haw River forming an arc around Burlington, the Haw River Valley grape-growing region offers four wineries open to the public. Due to its proximity to Raleigh and Durham, the Haw River Valley Wine Trail is popular with visitors in the Triangle and easily accessible from I-40 and I-85.

Recommended Winery: Tucked away in Mebane, not far from all the outlets, lies Iron Gate Vineyards & Winery . As the only winery in Alamance county, Iron Gate transformed an abandoned tobacco farm into a vineyard. They adopted sustainable farming practices early on, placing them at the cutting edge of the movement. A weekend visit includes a tour of the processing center and a tasting experience.

What to Try: Chambourcin, a dry red wine blending flavors of oak, vanilla, a cherry finish with a touch of spice.

Where to Stay: Stay about 30 minutes away at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill . With convenient shuttle service to many locations in Chapel Hill, you can also explore this cute college town. This home away from home features a pool, tennis and basketball courts, and includes snack bars on each floor so you can enjoy popcorn while watching a movie in bed or a late-night ice cream snack.

Ridgeline Craft Beverage Trail

Traversing Gaston and Cleveland Counties, a short drive from Charlotte is the Ridgeline Craft Beverage Trail . Technically not an NC wine trail, but featuring two fantastic vineyards and wineries, it is worth a visit.

Recommended Winery: Veronet Vineyards & Winery , sip on a variety of wines while overlooking a panoramic view of Crowder Mountain and the Pinnacle. Offering eight wines in an elegant environment, including flights. The fancy charcuterie plate features local products and food trucks offer more substantial meals.

What to Try: Rosé (light and refreshing) or the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Where to Stay: Spend the weekend in nearby Shelby with small-town charm and strong music roots. Stay at Morgan and Wells , a cozy bed and breakfast. Wine Trail Etiquette

Designate a driver :.

Choose someone ahead of time who will act as the designated driver or pay a service to drive you around. Pick out a bottle or two that you think the designated driver can enjoy once you get back home or to your hotel.

Clear your schedule:

North Carolina wine trails feature three to six wineries each. They are best enjoyed slowly, over a day or even a weekend. Plan on spending between 30 to 60 minutes at each winery between the tour and tasting. Add the time to get from one winery to another and you can see that you need at least a day to not feel rushed. Many tastings stop about an hour before closing time.

Have fun learning:

Tasting room personnel know their wines. This is your chance to ask questions about something they are passionate about — their wine! They can explain the different nuances of wine, how to pair it with food, why the same grape can taste different, etc. Think you don’t like red wines because you tried one you didn’t like five years ago? Plan to eat:

Not every winery offers food and nothing spoils a wine trail trip than getting tipsy due to an empty stomach. Make sure to eat some food before embarking on your adventure. Plan the order of your stops taking into account which wineries offer food or bring your own snacks.

Leave the kids at home:

Wine tastings require your attention and time. Children need both. Make this an enjoyable and safe outing for yourself and other guests by leaving your children at home.

Food can be a problem on some of the wine trails as the wineries are in rural areas and there are limited options. There are, however, some options! Most of the wineries in North Carolina are completely fine if you bring your own food and enjoy it while hanging out and enjoying their wine. Also, most of the wineries will have food trucks on the weekends. There are also a few wineries that have good restaurants onsite that reliably have good food. Four that come to mind with this are 1) Roaring River Vineyards (Yadkin Valley), 2) Shelton Vineyards (Yadkin Valley), 3) Childress Vineyards (Yadkin Valley), and 4) Parker-Binns Vineyard (Tryon Foothills). We take people all of the time to these spots and always receive good feedback.

We’ve mainly only gone to the Outer Banks area, but I’d love to spend some time exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains and checking out some of these trails!

Hmm, I typically wouldn’t think of wine trails when I imagine North Carolina! I’m a huge wine lover, and so this was such a fun read. I have family in the state, so this trip would be absolutely possible for me! I’ll definitely be taking you up on your trip to leave my son home. I wasn’t aware that some wineries don’t have food, that’s a really important tip because as you said, being tipsy with an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster!

Planning ahead makes for a more fun outing. Enjoy!

Two of the best things to do. A roadtrip and wine tasting! Ididn’t realize that North Carolina had so many wineries. I love the sound of the Shallow Ford wine trail, as I also love history. And what’s not to love about a glass of wine while sitting out around a fire? Perfection!

There is no doubt that North Carolina is a beautiful state stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Appalachian mountains in the west. It’s a state full of natural beauty and perfect for a road trip . 

It also has a climate suited for many different grape varieties making it perfect wine-making country. With over 100 wineries and vineyards, it’s actually really hard to choose the best. 

From the beautiful Biltmore in Ashville to the smaller North Carolina wineries in the Yadkin Valley we have covered them all . 

Before prohibition, North Carolina was actually the States largest wine-producing area.

There is nothing like sitting on a vineyard patio with a lovely glass of wine enjoying the incredible view. Surrounded by nature, listening to the birds, it’s one of the best feelings. 

And these vineyards of course come in all different shapes and sizes but they all have warm welcomes and good wine and incredible views.

If you like your North Carolina wine tours on a big and grand scale then Biltmore is the place for you. Let’s just say it’s a castle with a vineyard and you get the idea. 

Just outside the mountain town of Ashville Biltmore is actually the most visited winery in America. That alone shows you how good this place is. 

There is a fairy tale quality about this palace that is hard to ignore and the inside matches the outside perfectly. All barrel tables and stone walls. You’ll be forgiven for thinking you have stepped onto the film set of Versailles. 

The sprawling landscape and neat rows of grapevines in the valley are also a sight to behold. Let’s just say this place is epic and is an Asheville winery that should be top of your list.

Treehouse Vineyards

So the clue to what makes this vineyard unique is in the name. Yes, this winery is a treehouse, well in fact a series of treehouses to be exact. 

Located in Monroe you can actually rent the treehouse for the night if you fancy a getaway in a vineyard. 

Here everything is quiet and peaceful and much more intimate. They often do live events here so it’s worth checking to see if anything is on while you are visiting.   

The wine is award-winning and they pride themself on making sure they produce the healthiest wine possible.

Shelton Vineyards

Located in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley near Monroe, Shelton’s is one of the biggest vineyards on the east coast. 

It’s an estate-type vineyard with a manor house and beautiful grounds for you to explore. There are many paths to walk around on the property and picnic tables for you to sit and relax at. 

The vineyard also has the Harvest Grill too if you want to enjoy some food inside, or on the patio.

Shelton’s is committed to sustainable farming practices and uses a gravity flow system which means there are fewer contaminants in the wine.

This is also one of the wineries in North Carolina you can stay at and it’s especially beautiful in the fall . It’s located in Dobson, North Carolina.

Cypress Bend Vineyards

What is unique about this winery is the grapes they grow.  Muscadine grapes or Scuppernong as they’re known in North Carolina are very large sweet grapes and that’s what makes the wine her. 

This winery is cute and perfectly informal and while it doesn’t have the large grandeur of the others it has the warmest welcome. 

There is a lovely veranda area where you can sit and enjoy the surrounding area. They also often have events so check to see Jazzy Fridays are a real hit. 

The Cypress Bend Vineyards is close to Wagram and the owners alone are worth this trip here. 

Autumn Creek Vineyards

Located in the Piedmont region of the state this winery in Noth Carolina is more mountain cabin vibes and really is beautiful. It’s a very popular wedding destination. 

If you can going here in autumn it”;s a real treat as the fall colors are just incredible. There is a reason for its name after all. 

The rolling countryside of Rockingham country is just stunning and if you fancy staying the night they have cabins you can book. 

This winery in North Carolina s full of rustic charm and lets nature be the main player. It’s close to Mayodan and is best known for its dry white wines.

Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery

If you fancy a little bit of Italy in NC then this is the place to go. In the swan creek regio of the Yadkin Valley, the conditions are similar to that of the Lombardy province hence the Italian feel. 

The family originated from the Lombardy region and you can tell, the villa screams Italian. 

This place is picture-perfect, an Italian-style villa, hills covered in vines, and far-off mountains, honestly stunning. 

If you can visit Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery then we really suggest you do.  They have produced 11 award-winning wines and there are several options to choose from at the tasting room.

Banner Elk Winery

Surrounded entirely by the Appalachian Mountains the location of this winery is exquisite. 

An estate-type winery the Banner Elk Winery buildings are surrounded by sloping vineyards and evergreen trees creating a stunning backdrop. 

Banner Elk is truly one of the best Mountain Towns In North Carolina!

You can stay in the villa and weddings are often held here. Oh and sunsets and sunrises here are out of this world. 

In our opinion, this is one of the most stunning wineries in North Carolina so add it to your itinerary if you can.

Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Henderson Country this is the highest of the vineyards in NC. The higher the altitude the harder the vines have to work and the better the wine.

This is the wineries in North Carolina to come if you want your trip to be more about the wine than anything else. The tasting room has indoor and outdoor facilities. 

The wine is good including and is made from grapes normally grown in Germany, Austria, and France. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards is one of the wineries near Hendersonville that we recommend you visit.  

Hendersonville is also home to some of the best restaurants in the region!

They also offer something called tubular wine tasting. The wine comes in test tubes consisting of three whites, one rose, and two reds. Make sure to check out all of the Best Things To Do In Hendersonville while you are at it.

Silver Fork Vineyard & Winery

The tasting room here is a striking building all angular and wood but it somehow manages to blend perfectly into the incredible scenery of Western North Carolina. Just outside of Morganton Silver Fork is a 32-acre farm overlooking the mountains, 

It’s a very laid-back, comfortable winery with none of the airs and graces you can find on other wineries. 

It’s a great place to grab a glass of wine find a perch and enjoy the view. They also do some great events like Saturday music, Summer Movies Under the Stars, self-guided wine flights.

The dry rose made from Cabernet Franc is a real winner. For those that like European-style wines this is the palace for you. This is one of the wineries in Asheville that is well worth a visit.

Overmountain Vineyards

Right on the border with South Carolina, this is one of the wineries in North Carolina to visit if you like French wines. They grow a number of french varieties on their 16 acres and the wine is delicious. 

The view over the Appalachians and the hiking trails in this area are incredible. Hiking and wine sound like the perfect combination. 

It’s a reservation-only winery so keep this in mind but it is open all year round. In June and July, you can also pick blueberries on the farm if you wish. 

The Chablis-style Chardonnay they produce here is amazing. Overmountain is in the Tryon Foothills of Polk County. If you are looking for wine tasting in Charlotte then may we suggest Overmoutain.

Linville Falls Winery

This 40-acre farm is sprawling and reminiscent of an Italian countryside villa. North of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Linville Gorge with a 3,200 feet elevation. 

This is as much as a place to rest as it is to drink wine. They have managed to blend together, vines Christmas trees a Tuscan-looking tasting room, and an Appalachian Mountain-style barn, and it’s the perfect combination. 

You can do on-site yoga classes here and they often have live local music and food trucks at the weekend. 

Make sure you try the Riesling a specialty of this region. 

Burntshirt Vineyards

In the heart of Burntshirt on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are two vineyards on either side of the  Eastern Continental Divide. The one in Hendersonville is where the winery is offering daily tours and tasting and on-site accommodation if you are inclined. 

Firstly the location of this place is just breathtaking and the views indescribable. You might often feel like you are alone in nature here. 

There are 25 wines on offer here and in the tasting you get to choose five. It’s a go at your own pace kind of place and a very relaxing atmosphere. 

The elevation is a 3,400-foot elevation which means the grape conditions are different and therefore the wine tastes different. Some say high elevation wines are more drinkable. 

The Gruner Veltliner and the Altitude 3400, are our suggestions and the reds here are delightful. 

  Duplin Winery at Rose Hill

In Rose Hill, this is one of the Duplin wine empires’ locations. Known as the winery of the south the other location is in North Carolina. 

It’s a bit of a hidden gem here. Off the beaten track it’s filled with rustic charm and that southern hospitality this area is known for. 

The wine tasting allows you to sample at least ten preselected Duplin wines but what this vineyard is most famous for is award-winning Muscadine wines. 

This Duplin winery is well worth a visit if you are short of time. Also, we highly recommend you try the Dulpin Christmas wine it’s wonderful.

Honeygirl Meadery 

We wanted to make sure this in this wineries of North Carolina list wee included something a little bit different and this is it. 

This place describes itself as ‘ a place for all things bees, honey, herbs and flowers’ which is just delightful. Here they make wines and of course meads with honey and different kinds of fruit . 

This is a place that celebrates nature and works with it instead of trying to bend it to your will. Here they make traditional meads, fruit meads, and herd meads. 

Levander Mead and Honey Chai Mead are just two of the range currently available. If you are looking for wineries in Raleigh maybe this one will be right up your street.

The tasting room is open from 12 -7. While this place may not have some of the fancier things located at other wineries it has hearts and soul which counts for a lot.

It’s about 30 minutes outside Raleigh in Durham and in our opinion well worth a visit.  

As you can see when it comes to wineries in North Carolina, there are many to choose from. North Carolina vineyards are all great and we know whichever you visit the wine will be great.
