Discussion in ' Long Travel Suspension ' started by Mxpatriot , Oct 2, 2011 .
This thread is intended as a primer for those interested in long travel suspension. There is a stickied thread that lays out a lot of information on what is available; the focus of this thread is helping others determine if LT is for them or not. Long travel is the ultimate when it comes to high speed suspension for your Tacoma, but it comes at a price. Long travel is expensive, maintenance intensive, and will not ride well if it is not tuned well. The intention of this thread is to help folks decide if LT is for them and to have a better idea of what they're getting into. To start off, a lay out of what a basic long travel consists of, as I know this is a subject of confusion. Front: 1. Extended upper and lower control arms (trackwidth pushed out 2-6'' per side, depending on the kit). Long travel control arms generally use large heim joints, which allow more articulation and are stronger than ball joints. 2. Larger coil overs. Most LT kits utilize 8'' travel coil overs. Remember, travel is measured at the wheel, not at the coil over. That's why an 8'' travel coil over can yield 13-16'' of travel on a Tacoma. Most long travel trucks run remote reservoir coil overs to reduce shock fading. 3. Extended CV axles (Four Wheel Drive Only) 4. Extended tie rods. Some companies offer extensions (Total Chaos, Camburg ) while others offer complete heavy duty replacements (All Pro). 5. Extended brake lines. 6. Limit straps. Whether or not you will need limit straps depends on what kit and what shock you are running. Some shocks are internally bumped/limited. 7. Fiberglass fenders. Every LT kit is going to need fiberglass fenders to be used for it's intended purposes. Even the All Pro kit will require fiberglass if you plan on stuffing those tires. You can skimp on glass for a while, but it will require dropping your bumpstops lower (by stacking washers) in order to limit up travel. You'll look a bit goofy with your tires way out from your fenders too. This is a BASIC front kit. From here you can start gusseting your spindle, UCA bolt, your LCA mounts, and your coil bucket. In addition, with certain kits you can start adding air bumps, secondary shocks, etc. The sky (and your wallet) are the limits. Popular kits off the top of my head: 1. All Pro 2. Camburg 3. Engage 4. Total Chaos You can expect to spend $2,500-$4,000 for the long travel kit, $1,100-$1,500 on shocks, and $400-$500 on fiberglass fenders. Installation varies; just remember that four wheel drive trucks will require the extended CV axles which are a PITA to install. Rear: 1. Spring under axle leaf springs. SUA allows a significant increase in up travel and the larger springs allow more droops as well. Most kits require welding or bolting on new mounting locations, but there are kits that re-use the stock mounting positions (Defined). There are pros and cons to each method. 2. 14-16'' travel shocks. Most guys will purchase bypass shocks because they are easier to tune. 3. A bed cage, or shocks hoops, to mount those longer shocks to. In order for the axle to rear full up travel, the shocks will need to be mounted at a higher than stock location, thus the need for a bed cage/shock hoops. 4. Bumpstops and strike plates. Rubber, air, or hydraulic; you just need something to buffer that axle from slamming into the frame. Obviously air/hydro bumps will handle better. 5. Limit straps 6. Driveline work. Certain models will require a slip-yoke on the driveshaft, others will not. The doublecab shortbed does not require driveshaft work for most applications. 7. Extended brake lines. 8. Fiberglass fenders. Again, this is a BASIC kit. LT'ing the rear of the truck will involve welding and some fabrication no matter what kit you go with. Popular rear set ups/shops for rear LT: 1. Giant Engineering 2. Defined Engineering 3. DMZ 4. SDHQ 5. Engage 6. Total Chaos Pricing on rear LT kits varies a lot, but expect $2,500+ in leaf springs, hardware, and shocks. The fabrication work and bed cage will vary drastically depending on who is doing the work.
Now that you have a basic understanding of what long travel consists of, ask yourself these questions before you jump in: 1. Are you the type of person who will check torque on a monthly basis? Are you comfortable working on your own vehicle? Unless you are absolutely made of money, you will need to be able to spin a few wrenches in order to keep your LT truck safe and ready to wheel. With the amount of abuse that a long travel truck endures when it is used to its potential, you will need to be keeping a close eye on your vehicle. We have had more than a few trucks here have spindle bolts snap or come loose, which will cause your LCA and spindle to separate. At low speed this results in a tow truck ride and hopefully not too much damage. At high speed it could be fatal. 2. Can you tolerate the noise? LT kits squeak. LT trucks rattle. Exposed uniballs and bushings will make noise. Bypass shocks click. Noise travels through roll cages. It is a constant battle that not too many folks can stay ahead of, especially if the truck sees dirt on a routine basis. Fiberglass fenders grab a lot of air and let a lot of tire noise into the cab. This also affects gas mileage. 3. Are you ready to break things? Not even things related to the suspension. Motor mounts, plastic headlights/grill mounts breaking, etc. are all part of the game and most of us have dealt with these items breaking. I'd highly advise having a few extra thousand bucks and a back up plan of how to get to work the next day before you start hucking your brand new LT truck. 4. Are you ready to deal with shops and dealerships blaming your modifications for unrelated problems? Can't tell you how many times I have had shops or dealerships point the finger at the suspension when the problem was not related to the suspension. Alignments are always comical, as there is no page in their "Alignment Machines for Dummies" book for long travel trucks. Unless you find a shop with a tech who actually understands how suspension works and is not just reading numbers from a machine, you will be in an uphill battle. That's why most of us do all the wrenching on our trucks. 5. Do your wheels have the backspacing to allow spindle gussets? Is your cab mount chopped? You will need both of these done. 6. Do NOT expect the truck to handle like stock. Isn't that why you just dumped ten grand into it, anyways? It will become a special purpose machine and will not handle like it use to. Even in the dirt, LT trucks generally don't handle well at low speed. The stiff compression needed to absorb jumps and whoops does not handle washboard roads or small bumps smoothly at low speed. That said, LT can hit stuff way, way faster than a stock truck can dream of. 7. Do you love hauling ass? Because there is no greater feeling than hauling ass over rough terrain while floating on a cloud of suspension.
Nice Write-Up Chase Definitely sticky worthy
If you can tolerate the above things and have the money, then what are you waiting for? Just don't say we didn't warn you, because once you start you won't be able to stop!
highly informative, well written, and funny. well done. just learned a lot.
I can not tolorate any of the above. I'll stay a mall crawler
Great write up!
nice write-up! i can't wait to LT my DC!
this is a great write up, nice job
u just changed my mind and saved me alot of money was going to go ahead with LT but dont have the money and am not yet sure if i could deal with the constant tuning and other problems may be once i get a good job and some more knowledge under the hood

what do you think of the all pro kit and rear SOA set up if the wheeling you do is mainly trails and occasional high speed burst? thats my plan, i do plan on gussetting spindle, lca tab, and shock mount, and can wrench. but from my understanding it gets expensive when you turn to higher speed pre running over slower crawling?
If your mainly doing trails and light desert run your fine with the AP kit and SOA. I had that setup for a while and it works out fine.
How was the daily ride with that set up?
It's pretty good, squeaks sometimes (seems to depend on the temperature). I use it for both high speed (just have to know your limit & have enough weight in the rear) and you can decently fast. Corners are fun with lean from the LT too
great write up

The Toyota Tacoma has been synonymous with rugged midsize truck toughness that never quits for years. The Tacoma brings legendary quality, durability, and reliability to this class while offering truck owners nearly thirty configurations. This truck enters the 2024 model year and joins the Tundra as the next hybrid Toyota truck.
The hotly anticipated 2024 Toyota Tacoma enters a new generation by dipping its proverbial toe into hybrid waters. The i-Force MAX name is becoming a staple in the Toyota lineup, first arriving in the new Tundra for 2022 and then in the Sequoia full-size SUV in 2023 . Now, this name is applied to the new Toyota Tacoma Hybrid, giving the new generation midsize truck a hybrid powertrain that handles off-road duties in the highest trims.
Although rumors swirled around a Toyota Tacoma Electric with a full-time EV powertrain , Toyota has yet to develop or release such a product. We may see an EV Tacoma in the future. Still, for now, we can admire and enjoy the impressive performance, power, and capability brought to us by the new Toyota hybrid midsize pickup truck.
Updated September 1, 2023: The Toyota Tacoma Hybrid continues to excite drivers and will be joining the brand's family of hybrids. With a greener, cleaner vision for the brand across global markets, this article has been refreshed to represent that information.

Forget minor tweaks with nips and tucks along the edges; the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma was redesigned from the ground up on the TNGA-F global truck platform. This platform is shared with the Tundra and Sequoia but was adjusted to fit the midsize Tacoma. When the design team created this new generation of the Tacoma, they built it to be utilized in the U.S. market, making it a truck ideal for wide open spaces , long road trips, and cross-country travel.
The TNGA-F platform increases rigidity over the previous generation. This is accomplished using high-strength steel with blanking and laser welds utilized throughout the chassis. Toyota also utilized aluminum in the upper body to save weight and make this truck more agile on and off the roads.
This new Tacoma goes on sale later this year as part of the 2024 model year. Those looking for the Toyota Tacoma Hybrid with the i-Force MAX powertrain will have to wait until early 2024 for the hybrid version to be available.
Toyota introducing its newest i-Force MAX powertrain to this hybrid off-roader will certainly be a selling point for the brand. We'd expect this to be a draw for drivers and a point of jealousy among other competitors. Again, you'll need to wait until Q1 of 2024 to buy a Tacoma with this, so keep up with the company's press releases and website.
The biggest news surrounding the new Tacoma is the addition of the i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain . This system gives us a hybrid Toyota truck that’s powerful, capable, and should be relatively efficient. We’ll leave the efficiency numbers alone and focus on the fun stuff. This new Toyota hybrid pickup truck includes a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission.
The electric motor is powered by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, allowing the Tacoma to deliver 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.
With the i-Force MAX powertrain, the Toyota Tacoma Hybrid can tackle an 8-percent interstate grade without needing to downshift, making your long road trips easier and more pleasant. The Tacoma reaches max towing capacity in the SR5 trim TRD PreRunner XtraCab models with the hybrid powertrain. These models provide up to 6,500 pounds of towing, which is more than enough to take a boat or trailer to the lake for a weekend full of fun.
Generations of Tacoma owners turned to this midsize truck for its off-road prowess, durability, and capability. Toyota takes these qualities and turns them up several notches, not just in the new hybrid version of this Toyota truck, but across the lineup. Some of the off-road features you’ll find in this new midsize Toyota include:
The new front disconnecting stabilizer bar enables the Tacoma to increase wheel articulation by 10 percent compared to the outgoing model. This feature is compatible with Toyota-approved lift kits, ensuring owners always have their desired level of off-road capability. The TRD Pro trim offers the maximum off-road clearance and angles.
The TRD Pro comes standard with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain , making it one of the first off-road hybrid Toyota trucks. The Multi-Terrain Select system is now functional in 4WD-High and 4WD-Low, providing more capability when stuck in the mud or crossing terrain at higher speeds.

For the first time, overlanding enthusiasts will have a pickup truck suited to their needs right from the factory. The Tacoma Trailhunter trim features the i-Force MAX powertrain and brings a plethora of standard overlanding features with it. This truck comes with a five or six-foot bed in the Double Cab configuration. Those with serious overlanding goals will likely choose the heavy-duty version of the full ARB bed rack that supports additional gear, including rooftop tents, canopies, or a camp shower.
Toyota worked with Australian-based ARB to develop many of the overlanding features of the new Tacoma Trailhunter . Some of these items include:
The OME shocks and a set of 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires provide an additional two inches of lift to the Trailhunter, giving this Toyota Tacoma Hybrid a boost to ride over some of the toughest terrain and obstacles . The Trailhunter model also comes with a high-clearance trail exhaust and a low-profile high-mount Trailhunter Air Intake to ensure owners can fully use the ground clearance offered in this truck.
The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is more than just a hybrid Toyota truck. This new model elevates its position as a desert-running, off-road-oriented truck. Toyota provides this new off-roader with a set of rear disc brakes, which have been missing for a long time, but also gives it the off-road gear that makes most outdoor enthusiasts drool. Some of what you’ll find in the TRD Pro include:
The TRD Pro sits two inches higher in the front and 1.5 inches higher in the rear than the Tacoma SR5. This off-road champion is also three inches wider than the lower trims of the new Tacoma. The new Toyota Tacoma Hybrid TRD Pro is more than a better off-road truck; it’s also much more comfortable. The TRD Pro brings a segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seat to the mix, giving the driver and front passenger added comfort and a smoother ride on tough terrain. These seats include two stabilizing adjustable shock absorbers to reduce fatigue on rugged trails. Talk about a game-changer!
While we wait for the Toyota Tacoma Electric and the conversation about Tacoma charging time, we can admire this new Toyota hybrid pickup truck with the addition of the Trailhunter trim, improved TRD Pro features, and a wide range of added capabilities that make Tacoma an easy choice for adventure-oriented shoppers.
It's no shock that Toyota will continue to dominate the hybrid market, including with the long-anticipated Tacoma Hybrid drop next year. As the date comes closer, we're sure Toyota will come out with new hybrids, EVs, and even PHEVs, as this is the future of the brand. Notably, Toyota has made a promise to introduce an entirely electric lineup by 2026, with race cars, SUVs, trucks, and even work vans in the group.
This marks a dawn of new, green technology coming out of Toyota factories, with many speculating the company will make a full switch from gas to electric by 2030. Also deemed 'Beyond Zero,' Toyota's plans for increasing EV production will begin with hybrid models taking over what once would have been solely fuel-powered cars, trucks, SUVs, etc. Of course, with iconic hybrids to its name like Prius (and now Tacoma), Toyota is taking a unique approach to climate change, with hybrids being the middle-ground for consumers.
Toyota is going green, just slower than some other auto brands. We suspect this could be due to them wanting to perfect batteries and specs for hybrids and full EVs, which could work in their favor.
Even if Toyota isn't boasting as many EVs as other companies for now, we'd still like to commend them for moving in the right direction. Major change takes time, so it doesn't surprise us that Toyota would choose to perfect its hybrid and EV tech before releasing it to the masses.

10 used pickup trucks that are notoriously reliable but crazy cheap, used but reliable suvs that will last you a lifetime.
There is no denying the 4Runner’s success. It has served as a family vehicle, a tough off-roader, and even a world tourer. The versatility and durability of its platform have made it a legendary nameplate every 4x4 lover knows. Now, the current generation has been getting a bit old – actually, it is ancient. Toyota has kept the fifth-generation model alive for more than a decade and it is now starting to show its age for good.
That being said customers don’t seem to care. In fact, it looks like people love the old-school character of the 4Runner as sales during the past few years have been great. This means that Toyota needs to be careful with the upcoming model as it must retain its simplicity. By the looks of things, the upcoming Toyota 4Runner might be a bit more complicated than necessary.
RELATED: 10 Reasons Why People Still Love The Aging Toyota 4Runner
The current Toyota 4Runner is becoming somewhat of a legend and it is now so old that it would be a shame to see it go. Its most well-known fact is perhaps the trouble-free miles it can offer. The reliability the truck offers is mainly down to its incredibly simple underpinnings. Under the hood, you will find a 4.0 liter V-6 that pumps out 270 horsepower. This is a naturally aspirated unit that Toyota has been using for decades. Because of this, it has very few components that can go wrong. The same is true for the slow and lethargic five-speed automatic transmission that features technology mostly found in vehicles of the 1990s. Again, it's ancient but very reliable.
The drivetrain is much of the same story with an independent front end and solid rear axle. Just like the 4Runner and the vast majority of Toyota trucks have been for the past couple of decades. On the inside, the old-school vibes continue with a dated screen and huge buttons for the climate controls. The dashboard is upright and definitely feels like it was designed a long time ago. Again, this doesn’t seem to bother buyers given the demand for the current model.
Toyota hasn’t released any information about the upcoming 4Runner. So, how on earth are there many updates to talk about? Well, recently the Japanese automaker revealed the all-new Tacoma and more excitingly, the all-new Lexus GX. Why does this matter?
Well, the Lexus GX has long been a rebadged and more luxurious version of the Land Cruiser Prado which is a very close cousin to the 4Runner. Most of the underpinnings between these three vehicles are the same. Therefore, by taking a look at Toyota’s recent releases we can gather a lot of details about the upcoming 4Runner as well.
The TNGA-F platform that can be found underneath the 300 series Land Cruiser, Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia will also be featured underneath all other off-road-oriented Toyota models with the next 4Runner being included.
RELATED: Here's Why The Decade-Old Fifth-Generation Toyota 4Runner Is Still A Good Buy
There was no doubt that Toyota was going to keep the independent front and solid rear suspension setup of the 4Runner. It has worked well for the past years and has positioned the 4Runner as a more comfortable but less capable vehicle than the Wrangler. The suspension system on the TRD Pro 4Runner models should be nearly identical to that of the new Tacoma TRD PRO which now offers disconnectable sway bars and Fox QS3 shocks.
Some minor changes are expected as the Tacoma is made to tow and haul more weight. Tire size might be larger than the 33 inches available on the Tacoma as the 4Runner now has to compete against vehicles like the Bronco Sasquatch which can be had with 35-inch tires.
The new Tacoma TRD Pro offers crawl control, multi-terrain select, a steel rear bumper, skid plates, a rear locker, a disconnectable sway bar, and of course low range. The 4runner is expected to have the same exact features but there is hope that the SUV might take things a little further. Again, since this is a vehicle meant to compete against the Bronco and Wrangler, the addition of a front locker and larger tires would certainly be welcome. Manufacturers are now pushing the limits of what’s possible with factory off-roaders and Toyota can’t continue to sell the 4Runner as it is. .
RELATED: What You Need To Know About The 2025 Toyota 4Runner
Toyota has announced that the Trailhunter package will be available for the Tacoma . In case you aren’t aware, the Trailhunter package offers factory-installed accessories for those who would like to take their Toyota 4x4 on overland expeditions. These accessories are mostly designed for long-distance travel and not all-out hard-core off-roading.
The mid-size pickup equipped with this package gets different Old Man Emu suspension, a steel rear bumper, more extensive underbody protection, and rock sliders, and can be ordered with accessories like a bed rack and more. Worth mentioning is that most of these accessories come from ARB which is a renowned Australian 4x4 accessory manufacturer.
It is highly likely that the Trailhunter trim level might also be offered on the 4Runner as it is one of the most famous overland vehicles in the country. With this package, the SUV should feature similar Old Man Emu suspension, a steel rear bumper, a roof rack, underbody protection, and more overland-related factory accessories. This is a great idea as it provides customers with the ability to have a modified vehicle that is warranted and financed as one single unit.
Downsized engines are the name of the game with new vehicles. Strict emissions regulations and fuel economy wars lead to power plants that utilize a smaller displacement that uses turbos to achieve horsepower figures similar to those of larger engines. Also, in some cases, electric powertrains are added to further increase power and decrease fuel consumption. According to MotorTrend, the next-gen 2025 4Runner will have a hybrid powertrain. It is highly likely that the new 4Runner might receive the same 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that can be found in the Tacoma.
This is one of the biggest worries associated with the new 4Runner. The smaller hybrid and turbocharged 2.4-liter engine is more complicated and more stressed than the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter of the current model. This means that the new 4Runner might not be as reliable as the old one which will be a shame as reliability is the 4Runner’s identity. Of course, as of now reliability concerns are just speculations. Toyota is expected to put great effort into making the upcoming 4Runner as competitive as possible as the current market for rugged 4x4s is fiercer than ever.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals: atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.
Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final. While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut. Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so. But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.
This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime. Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30). Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date. Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles: Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30. In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans: Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.
For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship. The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize. The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it. Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.
The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth. There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat. Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.
I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games. They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL. They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
Heim joint pivot upgrade.
