 The tour (usually) has three stops: a typical Dominican Colmado (see explanation above), a cave where you can swim and the beach of Macao . You can try and buy local products at the first stop, but prices tend to be higher than in an original Colmado, as this shop is mostly receiving tours. However, it is still a lot cheaper than buying in a souvenir store or your all-inclusive resort, so it is worth having a look in case you are interested in buying something. If you do so, bring a water-repellent bag with you, as otherwise your newly shopped goods might get muddy as well. 😉

 The second stop of your Punta Cana buggy adventure is a lagoon in a cave (also called “Cenote”), where you can swim. It is not the most beautiful lagoon we have in the Dominican Republic, but it is a nice opportunity if you have never seen one. Sometimes it gets a bit crowded. If you want to visit other cenotes around Punta Cana, you can check Hoyo Azul at Scape Park Punta Cana or Hoyo Claro in Punta Cana .

 After getting wet and muddy again (did I mention this already? 😉 ), your last stop is Macao Beach , one of the most beautiful beaches in Punta Cana . Here you can take some photos or have a dip into the ocean, but please be very careful about the currents and the waves, as they can be particularly strong at this beach. Be prepared that there are a lot of vendors at Macao Beach .

 The tour starts in the foothills of the Anamuya Mountains, among lush tropical vegetation and marvelous mountain views (on a lower scale, don’t expect the Dominican Rocky Mountains to be here 😉 ). You’ll first head over some secondary roads to reach some farmer’s land, where you drive over old plantation trails through various (natural) rivers and mud puddles. The scenery here is super green and it is most likely the lushest vegetation you will see among all Punta Cana buggy tours.

 After getting completely soaked you continue the journey to the Anamuya River, where you’ll stop on a natural swimming pool. You can enjoy the refreshing water and rinse the mud off if you want. There are some smaller cascades and a large natural swimming pool.

 Before heading back you have another stop in the House of Coconut, where you can try local delicacies such as empanadas and coconut as well as local coffee, chocolate and Mamajuana. You can buy these Dominican products afterwards, along with natural coconut oil, cinnamon or other local products, all harvested respectively produced from the neighboring plantations, but there is no pressure or any hard sell tactics.

 This Punta Cana ATV Tour is a great option if you want to see the authentic countryside in combination with some of the most beautiful mountains we have close to Punta Cana. Considering the rather high price, the tour could be a tad longer, but the great reviews confirm how attractive this tour is.

As you most likely will get wet and dirty, it is very recommendable to wear old clothes which you don`t mind throwing away after the buggy tour, in case it’s not possible to wash out the mud. If you are sensitive to the sun, it might be recommendable to wear long sleeves, as most of the buggies or Polaris vehicles don’t have a closed roof.

Besides the old clothes mentioned, you should bring glasses to cover your eyes (if you have snorkeling goggles, perfect) and a face mask/covering to protect you from dirt and dust. Furthermore, don’t forget your sunblock, sunglasses, clothes to get changed after the tour and some money for tips and souvenirs.

As with all road vehicles, exercise and drive with caution. Don’t drink before going on a buggy excursion and drive only as fast as you feel comfortable. Do you know aything about the dune buggy tours that Renny tours offer?

Hi Debbie, I don’t know the tours from Renny personally, but as far as I can see from the website, they are just reselling the tours from other buggy tour operators with the same itineraries described above. Considering that the prices at Renny are more expensive than if booked directly as indicated above, I don’t see much advantage of booking with Renny. Cheers from Punta Cana Chris

We started out by being picked up at our hotel in an open safari truck and the driver was right on time and the weather was perfect! We experienced the “wild and crazy” driving of the Dominican population, they had us gasping at the narrow misses. When we arrived at the Macao Buggies site, we were given instructions on what to do and what not to do and asked if we wanted to upgrade to the bigger buggies and we were able to say no without being pressured. We recommend the smaller size. More mud, more fun! The tour guides took us through mud holes, pot holes and bumps. It is about the mud after all. They took us to the coffee/cocoa and cigar farm and were given a demonstration and samples of the local product…Mamajuana – Best rum anywhere! The vendors are there, but again we were able to say no without being pressured, we did purchase the rum and coffee beans, but remember this is their livelihood and depend on tourists, so they can be a little pushy. We ended the trip at the Macao beach where we got to dip in the ocean and clean some of the mud off. The trip was a ton of fun, we tried to splash as much mud as we could and as many other buggies as we could! We would recommend this to anyone, young or old. Just make it fun!

Our family of 4 (2 daughters 19 & 21) shared two VIP buggies through Punta Cana Tours. They offered 3 levels of riding (4×4 ATVs, beach buggies and gator styled 4×4) all leaving together and taking the same route and experience. The difference is the amount of muddy you want to get. The beach buggies are by far the muddiest and I do mean muddy. They will take pictures along the way and hound you to buy but not overly so. It was worth the money and my youngest daughters favorite part of our week long trip. You are actually driving or at a stop for 2 hours beginning to end the rest of the time is transpiration and set up.

What do you wear on a buggy tour?

Most buggy tours in Punta Cana run through unpaved country roads that are dusty when dry and muddy when wet! It's best to wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and a bandana to protect your mouth.

How old do you have to be to drive a buggy?

In Punta Cana you must be 18 years old to drive a buggy. There is no age restriction on being a passenger.

Can you wear flip flops on a dune buggy?

Yes you can! Since you'll be getting dirty and wet on most Punta Cana buggy tours, flip flops aren't a bad idea. With that said, a bit sturdier sandal or water shoe would probably be a better choice due to some some walking involved.

Are buggies automatic or manual?

All buggies used in excursions in Punta Cana are automatic. They are easy to operate and fun to drive!

Are pregnant women allowed on a buggy tour?

Pregnant women are not permitted on buggy excursions. The route is incredibly bumpy, making the tour very high risk for pregnant women.

Do you need a drivers license to drive a buggy?

No, a driver's license is not required but you need to be 18 years or older to drive a buggy in Punta Cana.

Exploring the Dominican Countryside

Departing from our Macao ranch, we traverse the unspoiled farmlands of northern Punta Cana, passing by swaying palm trees and verdant tobacco plantations, with the majestic Oriental Mountain Range serving as a captivating backdrop.

Visit the impressive “El Hoyo” cave, where you can swim in its underground river and continue your buggy ride to Macao beach, where you can continue swimming and relax under the shade of a palm tree. Our tour will end when you return to the base.

You will be picked up by our staff directly from the lobby of your hotel in Punta Cana and once arrived at the ranch will be greeted by our guides. After receiving brief safety instructions, your lifetime adventure starts! You will have a great time driving through the Dominican community among dirt roads, lush forests and typical houses , where mud and dust are the protagonist of this amazing excursion.

You’ll stop at a typical Dominican country house where you will learn about the manufacture and processing of local products such as cocoa, coffee, cinnamon, sugar cane among others and you will make your own cigar as a souvenir!

Passing by tobacco and banana plantations, you’ll reach one of the natural treasures of the area: the cenote “Hoyos del Salado” . You’ll swim in a really cool cave taking advantage of the gorgeous and refreshing crystalline waters. After a quick stop there you’ll move again and go to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Macao Beach , where you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and white sands that surrounds this corner of paradise.

– Driver must be 18 years old (minimum). There is no age restrictions on being a passenger. – Not advised for the old and very young, and people with back problems since the ride is rough and bumpy. – Pregnant women are not allowed to take part in this tour. – Zigzag or passing other buggies is not allowed for safety reasons. – Don’t go inside the water if you don’t know how to swim.
