Why Schedule a Campus Visit?

You’re making an important decision. You’ve browsed our website, reviewed brochures and done your research. Still, getting a feel for campus can help you make your final choice. Take in the culture and our Moscow location, experience life in the dorms and dining halls and see where you’ll be learning. Begin to see yourself at U of I with a campus visit.

Confirm your initial impression. If research grabs your attention, a campus visit goes beyond. Determine if you feel at home as a Vandal and if a particular program of study is right for you. Use your visit or campus tour to meet professors and other students, narrow down your list of majors and make a definite decision once you receive your acceptance letter in the spring.

Make the Most of Your Campus Visit

You’ve heard this advice before — don’t just look at buildings. Instead, keep the following in mind whether you’re attending an event, campus tour or a virtual session:

  • When to schedule your visit: Check out our Moscow campus as students attend class, engage in research and go about their day-to-day lives as Vandals. Ideally, attend a tour before submitting your application, preferably in the spring of your junior year or early fall of your senior year.
  • Be ready to ask questions: Make a list ahead of time to ask your tour guide, admissions counselor and students you see around campus.
  • Consider multiple campus visits: Start virtually to get a feel for our campus. Then, to get a more personal perspective, consider attending an on-campus visit. Here, opt for a student-guided campus tour, and schedule in visits with schools or departments for programs you’re curious about.
  • Take notes: What makes U of I unique? How does being a Vandal resonate with you? Document your visit with notes and photos to reference later.
  • Prepare ahead of time: Avoid attending a campus visit on a whim. Instead, schedule your visit in advance, make plans for a college or program visit, explore our virtual resources, review a map to understand the layout of our campus and make travel arrangements. Additionally, continue your research to ask questions during your visit.

Ethan Mollick is associate professor of management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and author of “Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI” (WH Allen)

Most companies do not have an artificial intelligence strategy, yet they are already riddled with the technology. A survey published this month by LinkedIn and Microsoft suggested that three-quarters of white-collar workers have used AI for work, and four-fifths of them have done so from their own accounts and devices. They are not seeking the permission of their employers; in fact, they are hiding it from them, because they are afraid of the consequences.

What that means is managers need to stop asking if AI will matter in their organisations and start shaping how it will matter. That is going to introduce a wide range of new challenges that will alter what management means. Our organisational structures are built around the idea that human workers are the only form of intelligence at work. That is no longer true.

For many people in many organisations, their measurable output is words — in emails, reports and presentations. We use words as a proxy for effort, intelligence and care. When a middle manager writes a weekly status report, the report itself may not be the point. Rather, it serves as a signal that the manager has done their job of monitoring the project and making corrections, as needed.

Historically, this has worked well enough. A senior manager could tell at a glance if a report was substantive (showing effort) and well-written (showing quality). But, now, every employee with access to AI tools can produce work that checks all the formal boxes without necessarily representing underlying effort or thought.

Executive Education Rankings 2024

upenn self guided tours

Read the rankings of custom and open-enrolment programmes

This poses a significant challenge to traditional management practices. If AI can generate reports, emails and presentations that are indistinguishable from human-created content, how can managers assess the true contributions and value of their employees?

In organisations that have become bogged down by bureaucracy, AI can help by automating endless paperwork. However, it will also create underlying questions of why the paperwork exists at all. In addition, once meaningful processes, such as performance reviews, may suffer as managers succumb to the temptation of the “write-it-for-me” button. When faced with AI-written content that replicates their work, some employees may even face a crisis of meaning about the nature and value of their contributions.

Our research shows that people ‘fall asleep at the wheel’ when faced with ‘good-enough’ AI content

The quality of AI writing is already quite good, especially when given source data, so the urge to use it will be ubiquitous. Our research shows that people “fall asleep at the wheel” when faced with “good-enough” AI content. They become less critical, and less likely to fact-check or thoroughly edit the AI’s output.

This can lead to the propagation of errors, misinformation or superficial analysis. As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, organisations therefore risk a gradual erosion of the depth and quality of their collective work product. Very soon, AI-generated content will be everywhere, in every organisation.

To productively use AI at work, leaders and employees need to reflect on what their work means to others, and to themselves. Thoughtful organisations can find answers, but few seem to be grappling with these issues as AI adoption expands, often under the radar.

upenn self guided tours

On the other side of the crisis, though, lies the possibility of freedom. Surveys repeatedly find that workers like using AI, even while recognising risks to their jobs, because the AI does the work they do not want to do.

Tools such as Microsoft’s Copilot make it easy for anyone to delegate drudge work and to focus on what they enjoy — and what others value — about their contributions. Organisations that embrace this and are willing to cut processes that no longer make sense in an AI-enabled world may find themselves benefiting.

AI may also help managers directly. Its capabilities in empathy, summarisation, and customisation make it a powerful tool for coaching and mentoring. AI can provide personalised feedback, help employees navigate complex situations, and offer guidance tailored to individual needs and learning styles. It can also watch everything an employee does and offer comments.

By leveraging AI in this way, as a coach and mentor, organisations can scale employee development and support it to a degree that was previously impossible — creating freedom from boring tasks along the way. Done wrong, however, it risks creating a panopticon, where employees feel constantly monitored and judged by an all-seeing AI.

So, the new form of management must strike a balance: using AI to empower and support employees while respecting their autonomy and privacy.

A strategic response from managers is imperative. The option to wait is no longer realistic. Nor is deploying the standard approaches of consultants and committees. The challenges and opportunities are much deeper.

By reflecting on the meaning of work and embracing the opportunities while mitigating the risks, organisations can chart a course to a future in which human and machine intelligence combine in powerful new ways.

Organisations that fail to do this will still be AI-powered, but without the human guidance that will help them thrive.

Visit Kremlin tour

Everyone who is coming to Moscow should include a visit to the Moscow Kremlin in their travel plans . It is the oldest part of the city, its geographical, historical and spiritual center. A Kremlin guided tour will allow you to see one of the greatest architectural treasures in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, what is the Kremlin in Russia? A kremlin means “fortress” or “citadel”. Some other old regional centers of Russia have their own kremlins. The origins of the Moscow Kremlin are found in its central square deep within the walls, where six beautiful cathedrals rise up with gleaming domes and dazzling white facades. Their foundations were laid, and the word 'kremlin' first used in the early fourteenth century. For centuries the Kremlin was a residence of Russian tzars and all of them are buried inside the Kremlin. In the times of the USSR the fortress became a workplace for Communist leaders. Nowadays it is an office of the Russian president.

Why should I visit the Kremlin?

The Kremlin is the site of many stirring events. During its long history the fortress was more than once raided by nomads, it was the stage of numerous feudal wars and devastating fires, but each time it was burnt to the ground or taken it came back greater than ever before. A 1.5 hour (kremlin tour) will take you on a ride along the twisting path of Russian history. Your Kremlin guide will tell you about some of the greatest and most terrible figures in human history and their life in the Kremlin. During the Kremlin private tour you get to see seven gorgeous 500-year-old cathedrals and churches, the giant Tsar-Bell and Tsar-Cannon and take a walk in the Kremlin Gardens. All these sights are included in our Kremlin guided tour. Standing in middle of the incomparably beautiful Cathedral Square and looking around, you can learn from your Kremlin private guide about the significance of each building which encircles it.

What else can I see during a Kremlin visit?

For a more rounded experience, a Kremlin tour may be combined with a visit to the Armoury – an outstanding museum of jewelry, regalia of state, weapon and carriages. Your Kremlin guide can conduct a tour of this museum too, just book it in advance. Another famous museum, The Diamond Fund, has a stunning collection of raw diamonds, golden nuggets, other precious stones and priceless pieces of jewelry, including the Crown of the Russian Empire made for the empress Catherine the Great. The Diamond Fund is located inside the Armoury, but is a separate museum. You can buy tickets on the spot (500 RUB).

How can I organize a visit to the Kremlin by myself?

The first thing you should do to visit the Kremlin is to go to the ticket office located in the Alexander Garden, near the entrance to the Kremlin. During high season queuing can take a long time. You can buy the tickets online on the Kremlin website. Then you still need to exchange the e-tickets for paper tickets at the ticket office. However the guided tour will take your experience of this visiting the Kremlin to a whole new level. With the guide's help you will be able to learn about the background of everything you see and to get much closer to the life of the Russians of 15-17th centuries. The tour includes visiting two cathedrals inside the Kremlin. The guide will clarify the rich symbolism and ritual of the Russian Orthodox church. While wandering among the tombstones of Russian rulers, you will learn more about the varied past of the country from your Kremlin guide.

How is a Kremlin guided tour organized?

After you book one of our tours which include a Kremlin visit, we will send you a request via PayPal so that you can make a prepayment for the tickets. We will buy the tickets in advance, the name of your Kremlin guide will be printed on them. On the day of the tour your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby. A tour of the Kremlin and the Armoury or the Kremlin and Red Square takes three hours. The Kremlin guided tour should be booked in advance as we would need to make sure of the tickets. Please book at least three days before the date; during high season, especially if you want to include the Armoury, two-three weeks ahead can guarantee you a tour.

A wonderful self guided tour

This is a very low cost tour if you do it yourself. A ticket costs only 40 Roubles and you can see all the stations if you like. The best ones are on the circle line. Start at one of them and travel in a circle hopping off at each station to take photos. If you are in one of the front carriages, you will be able to preview each station as they come into view. Also get on the blue line (3) and look at some of the stations on this line.

The Moscow Metro runs trains every 90 seconds, 24/7, at every stop. They have crews standing by to fix any problems. It is extensive, with more than a dozen lines going all over the city. Each station has unique architecture and all are beautiful. The Metro is its own attraction - besides being THE best way to get around the city. Oh, and the fee is very cheap!

When first seeing the map, I thought it was complicated, but then realized the concept was genius. There are many lines but the interconnections are just by the red circle. The train came between 1.5-2 minutes, very efficient. The challenge is you need to read Cyrillic letters to make it easy to travel. One should just understand the final destination and the interconnecting red line stations to transit. If you can read Cyrillic, there is not even a need to know which lines to interconnect by knowing the last station like the logic in Singapore/Bangkok/Manila/Hongkong MRT. Just know the destinations for transit of red circle line and final destination, and look at the board hanging above the walk way. When you have not reached the destination, don't go out to the exit. If you walk towards exit before the final destination, it means you are walking the wrong way. For non-Cyrillic readers, just know the name of transit red line stations and final destinations. Plenty of non-English speaking police, so just ask them the name of next station you intend to go. Price for one way ticket is RUR 40, and 5 trips RUR 180. Can be bought at vending machines (English available) or ticket counter (may not speak English). There is also option for multiple transport (bus, metro, electric car) for RUR 50, but each type of transport can only be taken once in total not more than 90 minutes. Trains are combination of old and new ones. New ones even have free WIFI. If you don't read Cyrillic, you need to concentrate on the voice of station in each arrival or just count stations by the map. For people traveling with heavy baggage, need to understand that there may be numerous stairways to negotiate with and the escalators are steep as usually Metro stations are deep underground.

The stations are lovely, but you won't be in them long. The train are efficient and usually come in under 5 minutes, 2 minutes was normal. The train range from old to new. Some have English signs; others no. Stations do no have English. There is a small map posted in every station on a small standing post. You should learn the Cyrillic alphabet and know how many stops you will be going. This will help you immensely. Changes at stations can take some time. Often you go ALL the way up to street level to come back down. Stations are VERY deep underground.

If you do not carry any heavy luggage, definitively use the metro. Fastest possible way for moving around this megapolis. You'll never wait for more than 5mins for the train. If you do not like to be really close to the people either do not fo there or avoid rush hours.

We only popped down because we were told we should. I wasn't exactly excited frankly as I regularly frequent our own lovely underground. But. But. It was amazing! Like an underground palace (with trains) Possibly could have done without the random pole dancing from an excitable male pensioner but hey, no one else seemed to think it was odd. Take a trip down there, just travel one stop, it is well worth it.
